Former UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis signs with PFL

A day after he declared he was a free agent, former UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis has signed a multi-fight deal with the PFL.

He will be part of their upcoming “season” format in the lightweight division while saying he wants to compete at welterweight the next season.

“I’m looking to make a run at another world championship, and the PFL format will allow me to do that in 12 months and do it again the following year at 170 pounds. The offer the PFL gave me was extremely fair and they presented it as a partnership. Ready for a new chapter and a fresh start. Gonna be a fun ride,” he said to ESPN’s Ariel Helwani.

A partner of ESPN, the PFL will kick off on April 23rd with five events to follow through the end of June. The group didn’t run any events in 2020 due to the pandemic.

Pettis (24-10) defeated Alex Morono by decision in his final UFC fight on Saturday and has won his last two overall, the first winning streak he’s had in four years. He had been with the UFC for nearly a decade.

Raw tonight should do a much larger than usual rating with the Randy Orton vs. Drew McIntyre WWE title match. The show tonight goes against a Chicago Bears vs. Minnesota Vikings Monday Night Football game.

Former UFC heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum has signed with the PFL and will begin there during the company’s 2021 season.  In the PFL press release they called Werdum “arguably the greatest heavyweight fighter in the history of MMA.” PFL CEO Peter Murray called him the Tom Brandy of MMA. I wouldn’t go near that far, but he did have one of the biggest wins in MMA history in 2010 over Fedor Emelianenko, breaking Fedor’s ten year unbeaten streak.

I don’t know every single storyline or [what’s] going on each week. So, it wasn’t until I actually said the words ‘Role Model’ on TV and then I got the Bayley army coming at me. ‘You’re stealing her gimmick’ [like] I even knew she was calling herself that too. PFL reschedules 2020 season, fighters to receive monthly stipends

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Professional Fighters League (PFL) has rescheduled its next season.

“In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Professional Fighters League has rescheduled our upcoming 2020 season for Spring 2021,” PFL CEO Pete Murray announced today. “PFL is a global MMA league with athletes from over 25 countries, and our decision is guided by the health and safety of our fighters, fans, partners, and event personnel.”

This was set to be the PFL’s third season. The promotion was formerly known as World Series of Fighting.

“The PFL mission is to evolve and grow the sport of MMA, and we look forward to staging our unique sport-season format with Regular Season, Playoff and Championship events on ESPN platforms next year. PFL has always been focused on delivering the best made-for-TV MMA product and we will continue to deliver the most innovative fight experience going forward. Fans can also look forward to PFL elevating our roster with new championship caliber fighter signings such as Rory MacDonald,” Murray said.

“For the remainder of 2020, the PFL will support our fighters with a monthly cash stipend to help provide some relief during these challenging times. In addition, for sports fans who we know are looking for compelling content, the PFL will deliver new original programming across ESPN and PFL platforms.”

This year’s season was supposed to begin in May and conclude in December. The PFL had previously announced in March that they were delaying the start of the season and would begin when it was feasible to do so.

ESPN wrote that Murray said the PFL is “absolutely” open to holding events without fans but isn’t commenting on the possibility of holding a live, non-season event this year.

Bellator MMA postpones May events, PFL delays start of season

The uncertainty surrounding the coronavirus pandemic continues to wreak havoc with the MMA calendar as two promotions made further dramatic shifts to their schedule Monday.

Several weeks after canceling their Mohegan Sun (Connecticut) event hours before the first punch was scheduled to be thrown, Bellator MMA announced the postponement of their three May shows, first reported by ESPN’s Ariel Helwani and announced by the promotion Monday night.

Those shows were scheduled for May 9th in San Jose, CA, May 16th in London, England, and May 29th in Temecula, CA. The San Jose show featured a Ryan Bader light heavyweight title fight, and a vacant middleweight title fight between Gegard Mousasi and Douglas Lima. Bellator said they are hoping to reschedule them as soon as possible.

Their next show is scheduled for June 6th at Chicago, IL’s Wintrust Arena, their only event on their calendar until October.

Also happening on Monday, the Professional Fighters League (PFL) announced their 2020 season is on indefinite hiatus due to the coronavirus. They had yet to announce a formal schedule, but their season was expected to kick off in the late spring. PFL didn’t announce a full cancellation of this year, but said in a statement they were “adjusting their plan for the rest of the year and look forward to starting our next season as soon as it is feasible.”

Conversely, the UFC is still planning to put on UFC 249 on April 18th in an undisclosed location with a main event that might be in jeopardy.

‘Filthy’ Tom Lawlor returning to MMA, signs deal with PFL

Image: MLW

More than a year after he competed in Oscar De La Hoya’s one-and-done MMA promotional outing, former UFC light heavyweight “Filthy” Tom Lawlor will return to mixed martial arts in 2020, signing a deal with the Professional Fighters League where he’ll compete to win $1 million.

Announcing the news in an interview with Ariel Helwani Wednesday, the 36-year-old said he views the opportunity as a golden lottery ticket. Lawlor is currently signed to a deal with MLW and also works indies around the country which is expected to continue.

The former World Series of Fighting relaunched as the PFL and held their inaugural season under their new format in 2018. Fighters in six different weight classes compete in two fights earlier in the year to make their version of the playoffs in the fall. That consists of eight person, single elimination tournaments where fighters compete twice in a night in order to advance to the finals. If they win the finals scheduled for New Year’s Eve, they take home $1 million.

Lawlor, the co-host of the weekly Filthy Four Daily podcast on this website, doesn’t have a date or opponent for his first yet, but the PFL season runs from May through August. They have not announced their schedule as of yet.

Lawlor was suspended by USADA in November 2016 for two years for testing positive for ostarine. While he claimed his innocence throughout, his requests to be released were denied until the UFC randomly released him two months before that suspension was up. As more fighters tested positive for ostarine that earned significantly shorter sentences, USADA released a statement to MMA Fighting in April 2019 saying that Lawlor could have challenged the claim with an independent arbitrator and been eligible for a shorter suspension had the case happened in 2019.

Lawlor (10-7-0-1) last fought in the UFC in March 2016, losing a close decision to Corey Anderson. In the aforementioned De La Hoya event, he lost to current UFC middleweight Deron Winn.

MMA notes: UFC PPV price increase, Rory MacDonald signs with PFL

On Wednesday, it was revealed that ESPN is raising prices for UFC pay-per-views on their ESPN+ streaming service starting with January’s UFC 246 show headlined by the return of Conor McGregor.

The new price will be $64.99, a return to the pre-ESPN era. When ESPN took over as the sole U.S. provider for the UFC’s PPV distribution last March, they reduced the price to $59.99 to help account for the $5 monthly ESPN+ fee.

As part of their PPV deal, the sports network giant pays UFC a monthly flat amount for the exclusivity and the two sides do a revenue split after a certain amount is reached.

**********

Former Bellator welterweight champion Rory MacDonald has signed with the PFL, first reported by ESPN’s Ariel Helwani.

The move came as a surprise as the 30-year-old had a successful three-year run with Bellator after leaving the UFC. During his time in Bellator, he went 3-2-1 and won their welterweight title, successfully defending it twice. He lost it to Douglas Lima in October in the finals of the company’s welterweight Grand Prix.

After the Lima fight, he became a free agent as the champion’s clause no longer applied to him.

PFL runs on a season-style format where the winner of each weight division takes home up to $1 million. Helwani reported the Canadian will be part of their 2020 season and will compete for their welterweight title.

F4W NEWSLETTER: Looking at SmackDown’s move to FOX Joseph Currier looks ahead to SmackDown’s FOX premiere and what the move will mean. Plus, Bryan Rose’s Japan notes and Vinny V’s TV reviews.

While much of the focus has been on the AEW vs. NXT Wednesday Night War, WWE main roster television materially changes this week with SmackDown’s FOX premiere.

The magnitude of WWE airing live on network television every week has been apparent since news of the FOX move broke, but it didn’t fully set in until FOX started promoting the show. WWE personalities have been featured on FOX’s most valuable sports properties, with them appearing on NFL, college football, and MLB coverage. The promotion WWE would get on FOX was said to be one of the selling points of the deal, and FOX has already been as great of a partner as WWE could have hoped for. The promotional opportunities that FOX affords have the potential to make a real difference for WWE. Not every appearance will go perfectly (FOX’s Mark Schlereth saying Rey Mysterio was “like Nacho Libre” was pretty lame), but wrestlers being positioned as on the same level as other professional sports stars in FOX’s portfolio is gigantic for WWE.

WWE is also officially being given its own studio show on FS1. Renee Young and Booker T will host WWE Backstage, which premieres at 11 p.m. Eastern time/8 p.m. Pacific on Tuesday, November 5. There will also be a preview show after game three of Major League Baseball’s American League Championship Series on October 15. Young and Booker T will “weigh in on the biggest stories in WWE, and are joined by a rotating cast of guests and personalities, including current and former WWE Superstars.” The show is a FOX production, and it was reported last week that CM Punk has tried out for it.

WWE and FOX have worked in unison to make SmackDown’s FOX premiere as big as it could possibly be. Brock Lesnar will have his first match on either Raw or SmackDown since 2004 as he challenges for Kofi Kingston’s WWE Championship. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson will also make his first televised WWE appearance in over three years.

MONDAY NEWS UPDATE

Bryan and I will be back tonight talking Raw, Wednesday night wars as well as taking questions that you can send to [email protected]. We’re looking for your thoughts on both UFC 243 and WWE Hell in a Cell, you can leave a thumbs up, thumbs down or thumbs in the middle along with a best and worst match to [email protected]. We’re also looking for reports from Raw tonight in Bakersfield with dark matches, Main Event matches and anything else not on the show to [email protected]

As far as injuries last night, Daniel Bryan was fine, but Sasha Banks and Bray Wyatt were not medically cleared for tonight. Banks took stitches in her lip. Luke Harper was also fine.

Hell in a Cell was the ninth most searched term yesterday on Google with 200,000 searches, putting it behind Friday’s Smackdown overall and only one-fifth of what the UFC show from Melbourne did the night before.  In actuality, I figured the horrible ending of the show would lead to more searches, but it was actually in the usual range of what a B show does.

Mike Tyson has inked a deal with the PFL. He will host a new PFL television show called “Mike Tyson’s New Fight Game:  The PFL” which will air on the PFL YouTube channel and other digital platforms before their playoffs on Friday.  ESPN 2 was heavily advertising the PFL playoffs, which take place Friday night in Las Vegas (head-to-head with Smackdown which also takes place Friday night in Las Vegas), during the UFC show on Saturday.  The PFL playoffs will have some fights on ESPN 2 and some on ESPN+. Sarah Kaufman and Kayla Harrison are the headliners with women’s 155 and men’s 170 tournament fights.

For those not familiar with Tyson Fury, and it may not translate if they script him, but Fury is a better promo than just about anyone in boxing, all but a few in pro wrestling and MMA as well.  He’s probably at the level of Chael Sonnen. So he may surprise people and will if left to his own devices.

Also regarding Raw, tough competition tonight with the undefeated San Francisco 49ers vs. Cleveland Browns game plus a Yankees vs. Twins baseball playoff game. If they weren’t coming off a PPV, it would be a tough night for ratings.

Lilian Garcia joins PFL as ring announcer

Lilian Garcia has joined the Professional Fighters League as an in-cage announcer.

Garcia signing with the mixed martial arts promotion was announced during her appearance on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show today. Garcia noted that she’ll still be able to make special appearances for WWE as long as they don’t conflict with the 10 shows that the PFL has this season.

The PFL announced a two-year broadcast deal with ESPN this February, with content airing on ESPN2, ESPN+, and ESPN Deportes. The promotion uses a season model and has a regular season, playoffs, and championship.

“It’s no secret that I LOVE combat sports so now getting to be a part of the MMA world by introducing these amazing fighters in the ring who are fighting hard for an opportunity of a TITLE and ONE MILLION DOLLARS in EACH Division, is going to be unbelievably exciting,” Garcia wrote on Instagram.

This PFL season will begin on Thursday, May 9. The championship event will take place on New Year’s Eve (December 31).

Garcia hosts a podcast called “Chasing Glory” and regularly interviews WWE wrestlers and personalities on the show. She departed her full-time role with WWE in 2016 to care for her father before he passed away.

Garcia appeared at WrestleMania 35 earlier this month as the guest ring announcer for the WrestleMania Women’s Battle Royal.
