Previewing NXT TakeOver XXX: The killer, the champs and the punter

Editor’s note: The following is a column and represents the views of the author.

The 30th and easily the most eXXXplicitly named TakeOver is upon us and for the first time in a long time, this sure doesn’t seem like much.

They’re trying, Jennifer, but the interest just isn’t there like it has been for previous TakeOvers. A match with a retired NFL punter, Dakota Kai getting ruined, plus Damian Priest and Bronson Reed definitively not stealing the show — what more could you want?

This is all just fine, I guess? There’s nothing on the show that is must see and nothing that makes me think about canceling all the plans I don’t have to watch this. Of course, I’m going to watch it, but that’s beside the point. The point is that for an ‘anniversary’ TakeOver like this, there isn’t a ton that really gets my excitement up to watch it.

Maybe it’s just hard to care about the show when our current world demands that we care about everything but. We should not be forced to have an opinion on the US Postal Service. That should not be a hill we need to take a stand on. But, dear reader, I am forced to ask ‘why are we doing this?’. If we are forced to care about everything, it leaves very little room to care about escapes like wrestling. Most people can’t even muster up the desire to start a new TV show, so they just re-watch Succession for the fourth time in a year (turns towards the camera).

Unless it is truly compelling and unless it is otherworldly exciting, it’s hard to get invested in anything right now and this card isn’t anywhere close to compelling. But, we endure, fight through and preview the 30th NXT TakeOver for all the beautiful people out there like you who are doing the best they can.

Vacant North American Championship Ladder Match: Bronson Reed vs. Damian Priest vs. Cameron Grimes vs. Johnny Gargano vs. Velveteen Dream

Remember when NXT signings used to be huge and landscape altering names like Prince Devitt, Shinsuke Nakamura, Samoa Joe, Kevin Owens, etc? Now, they sign everyone like Bronson Reed, which makes the new names so much less impactful. If everyone is new, is anyone actually new? Just like it’s hard to care about anything when we are forced to care about everything, it’s hard to care about new signings when everyone gets signed. Sometimes it’s nice to be surprised.

What, exactly, is the point of Reed? The only guy who got zero reaction when he was in the 2018 PWG Battle of Los Angeles probably wouldn’t be getting one now even if there were live crowds. I don’t know what is special about him and what he has shown that is so deserving of a push. It sure isn’t the “Thicc boi” nickname. That is so beyond bad that it makes me want to never watch wrestling again. Fret not because much like I will never log off, I will never stop watching.

The only person who makes sense winning here is Grimes, who is excellent. How many chances is Priest going to get before people realize he’s just whatever? Why is Gargano on TakeOver again? Why Velveteen Dream on our TVs at all considering…everything? Ladder matches are always mindless fun, and even though my fondness for the competitors isn’t all that high, it should still be enjoyable.

I really think it’s Grimes time, baby. His shouty cartoon villain style promos are so much fun, and he would be just insufferable with a belt around his waist. I really hope they give it to him.

Adam Cole vs. Pat McAfee

Is this really going to end with McAfee standing tall while the Undisputed Era crumbles? I have gazed upon the ruins of the future and this is all I see.

Yes, it’s clear they are positioning Cole as a babyface, but is McAfee the best we could do to get there? That’s nothing against him, and maybe I’m underestimating his reach (re: I am too old) but this is Adam Cole, the longest reigning NXT champion in history and a guy who has spent years at the top of the card. And now he’s having a match with a pseudo celebrity? I just don’t get it. There has to be a better way to get to the end of the Era than this. Surely, there is something better. Surely, there is something more.

I think this has to be the beginning of the end of this current version of the Undisputed Era. It’s not even a secret that Cole is playing the face here. He’s openly giving interviews where he is saying, “I don’t see how anyone can see me as the bad guy in this situation. He’s the guy that doesn’t belong.” McAfee really drove that home this week on NXT, showing up with an entourage of former NFL players and getting a hell of a promo. Full credit where it’s due, McAfee is really good on the mic. He even threw in the obligatory “you people” for good measure.

There is just nowhere else this can go, so what is the point of having a one off feud with a punter? All I can think about is my precious and perfect Kyle O’Reilly taking over the Era from Cole and helping McAfee somehow win here. 2020 has been going on for eight years, and not once in those eight years did I ever think I’d be writing “Pat McAfee beats Adam Cole on Saturday.”

Yet there it is, and here we are.

Finn Balor vs. Timothy Thatcher

Now this is good stuff, pal. This is something everyone should be able to sink their teeth into: a match featuring ttwo of wrestling Twitter’s thirstiest fandoms coming head-to-head. I love that these two had all of one interaction and Tim got so mad that he came out and brained Finn. Then, like, 18 hours later, there was a match announced. Sometimes it doesn’t take all that much to stick two guys in the ring together and see what happens.

Seeing Thatcher get a huge stage to perform on is a wonderful surprise. He’s been doing this for so long without fitting the WWE mold that it was an actual surprise when his signing was announced. That makes me think he came on his own terms and is going to wrestle his way which is great because Timmy is a wrestler, man. I wish there was a less corny way of saying that, but there really isn’t. He’s going to stretch you. He’s going to slap you. He’s going to beat the heck out of you. He’s going to tap you. He’s going to make you think that all of this is real.

This is a great matchup for Balor who is obviously continuing to do the very best work of his WWE career. He has wrestled a super indie worker (Gargano), a tall guy (Priest), a certifiable maniac (Dragunov), and now the best wrestler of the bunch. Thatcher is completely different from anyone Balor has been in the ring with recently to the point that this should feel more in line with some of his heavyweight matches in New Japan.

Balor has nothing really to gain here with a win and it’s clear there are some plans for young Timothy. Thatcher goes over in the best match of the night.

NXT Women’s Champion Io Shirai vs. Dakota Kai

Why is this happening to Dakota Kai and what has she done to deserve this? This is the most relevant she has felt since she came to NXT and also has a zero percent chance to win Saturday.

Up until now, she has kind of been booked like a chump. She came out of her feud with Tegan Nox looking very chump-like. Her mini feud with Mia Yim also resulted in pseudo-chump status. The only people she has regularly beat recently are Kacy Catanzaro and Kayden Carter. Bull Nakano, they are not. Even her victory over Rhea Ripley was through no doing of her own. She got handled easily throughout that match, never once looking like a real threat. How can anyone reasonably expect her to beat the fully leveled up version of Shirai?

The crazy part about all of this is that Kai is actually really, really good. The switch to heel gave her character and depth, but even with all that, they still waited such a long time to pull the trigger on a full push that it almost feels like all of this is months too late. Before she had nothing, she just did a bunch of kicks. Now she actually has substance to her, but still feels a full level below the top of the women’s division in NXT which is squarely Shirai and Ripley. The return of Raquel Gonzalez certainly gives her a little extra something but that little something isn’t nearly enough.

Of course, Shirai is going to win this. She’s the best wrestler in every match she’s in. She should win every match. She should hold every title. She can do everything at such a high level. We truly do not deserve her.

NXT Champion Keith Lee vs. Karrion Kross (w/Scarlett)

Earlier I wrote that since NXT signs everyone, it is hard for anyone to feel special. Kross is the exception to that rule.

I have really enjoyed everything they have done with he and Scarlett. The allusions to the occult/supernatural, the outrageous theater kid entrance music and ring walk, and the minimal screen time have all worked tremendously. There is so much unique interest in Kross the character. He is at the top of the card and there is still so much we don’t know and so much story to tell. It has been a while since they had a character like this, one that isn’t just saying “Hello, I am from the indies, but it was my dream to be in WWE.” He just showed up, suplexed Tommaso Ciampa right out of NXT, and started his spooky journey to the top. You love to see it.

The only bummer about this match is that someone has to get cooled off. Lee has been the best thing going for a year now. Not even him dropping the North American title, which I thought was dumb, stopped his momentum. It’s almost unbelievable that him winning the title was just back in July, but that’s what happens when we live in a year of only Sundays.

I’m still trying to figure out why this only got the ol’ video treatment in advance of Saturday. Surely, an NXT title match deserves more than this. However, the video package was good as hell though. The overall aesthetic of everything Kross is involved in is the perfect mix of film school and hourglasses.

How does this end though? Two months isn’t enough of a top title run for someone of Lee’s caliber. Then again, Kross as champion feels like an inevitability. He has been shot to the top of the card with no signs of stopping. Will they really do some kind of non finish? Maybe big Dom Dijak gets involved in some way? Since this is Lee’s first defense of just the NXT title, let’s say he keeps it but the finish won’t be clean.

Mike DellaCamera is probably scrolling through Uber Eats and not ordering anything. Find him intermittently here.

WWE adds Finn Balor vs. Timothy Thatcher to NXT TakeOver XXX

Coming out of last night’s go-home episode of NXT, a new match has been added to the card for TakeOver XXX.

Finn Balor vs. Timothy Thatcher is now official for this Saturday’s TakeOver show. Thatcher interfered in last night’s main event, costing Balor his second chance qualifying match against Velveteen Dream. Bronson Reed, Damian Priest, Cameron Grimes, Johnny Gargano, and Dream will be the five wrestlers in the ladder match for the vacant North American Championship at TakeOver.

Balor and Thatcher were part of the same original triple threat qualifying match last month. As Thatcher had Balor in a leg lock, Dexter Lumis applied his Silence choke on Thatcher and Thatcher passed out.

Lumis has been removed from the TakeOver ladder match due to injury.

This will be Thatcher’s first TakeOver match.

The TakeOver XXX pre-show will begin at 6:30 p.m. Eastern time this Saturday. The main card will then start at 7 p.m. Eastern. Here’s the updated lineup for the show:

  • NXT Champion Keith Lee defending against Karrion Kross
  • Adam Cole vs. Pat McAfee
  • NXT Women’s Champion Io Shirai defending against Dakota Kai
  • Ladder match for the vacant NXT North American Championship (Bronson Reed, Damian Priest, Cameron Grimes, Johnny Gargano, and Velveteen Dream)
  • Finn Balor vs. Timothy Thatcher
  • Triple threat number one contender’s tag match: Legado del Fantasma (Raul Mendoza & Joaquin Wilde) vs. Breezango vs. Oney Lorcan & Danny Burch (pre-show)

Full lineup set for NXT TakeOver XXX ladder match

Johnny Gargano and Velveteen Dream are the final two wrestlers to qualify for the ladder match for the vacant North American Championship at TakeOver XXX.

Gargano and Dream won their respective second chance qualifying matches on tonight’s NXT, defeating Ridge Holland and Finn Balor. The five wrestlers in Saturday’s ladder match for the vacant North American title will be Bronson Reed, Damian Priest, Cameron Grimes, Gargano, and Dream.

All of the other ladder match participants got involved in tonight’s Dream vs. Balor main event. Timothy Thatcher also interfered and attacked Balor, leading to Dream getting the win.

Dexter Lumis previously qualified for the ladder match but was removed due to injury.

After Keith Lee defeated Adam Cole for the NXT Championship in their winner-take-all title vs. title match at Great American Bash night two last month, it was announced that Lee had vacated the North American Championship. It was said that Lee didn’t want to limit the roster’s opportunities and wanted as many people to get a chance to win the North American title as possible.

TakeOver XXX is taking place this Saturday. Here’s the updated card for the show:

  • NXT Champion Keith Lee defending against Karrion Kross
  • Adam Cole vs. Pat McAfee
  • NXT Women’s Champion Io Shirai defending against Dakota Kai
  • Ladder match for the vacant NXT North American Championship (Bronson Reed, Damian Priest, Cameron Grimes, Johnny Gargano, and Velveteen Dream)
  • Triple threat number one contender’s tag match: Legado del Fantasma (Raul Mendoza & Joaquin Wilde) vs. Breezango vs. Oney Lorcan & Danny Burch (pre-show)

Pre-show match set for NXT TakeOver XXX

A pre-show match has been added to the card for NXT TakeOver XXX.

Legado del Fantasma (Raul Mendoza & Joaquin Wilde), Breezango, and Oney Lorcan & Danny Burch will face off in a triple threat match on the TakeOver XXX pre-show this Saturday. The winning team will become the number one contenders to Imperium’s NXT Tag Team titles.

Legado del Fantasma (NXT Cruiserweight Champion Santos Escobar, Mendoza & Wilde) defeated Isaiah “Swerve” Scott & Breezango in a six-man tag match on NXT tonight. Scott had Escobar beat at one point but wasn’t the legal man after accidentally tagging in Tyler Breeze.

Imperium’s Marcel Barthel & Fabian Aichner have been NXT Tag Team Champions since defeating Matt Riddle & Timothy Thatcher for the titles this May. Imperium don’t have a title defense set for TakeOver XXX.

The TakeOver pre-show will begin at 6:30 p.m. Eastern time on Saturday. Here’s the updated card for the event:

  • NXT Champion Keith Lee defending against Karrion Kross
  • Adam Cole vs. Pat McAfee
  • NXT Women’s Champion Io Shirai defending against Dakota Kai
  • Ladder match for the vacant NXT North American Championship (Bronson Reed, Damian Priest, Cameron Grimes, Johnny Gargano, and Velveteen Dream)
  • Triple threat number one contender’s tag match: Legado del Fantasma (Raul Mendoza & Joaquin Wilde) vs. Breezango vs. Oney Lorcan & Danny Burch (pre-show)

Cameron Grimes qualifies for NXT TakeOver XXX ladder match

Cameron Grimes is the third participant to qualify for the ladder match for the vacant NXT North American Championship at TakeOver XXX.

Grimes defeated Kushida and the returning Velveteen Dream in the main event of tonight’s NXT to qualify for TakeOver. He joins Bronson Reed and Damian Priest as wrestlers who have qualified for the ladder match. Dexter Lumis had also initially qualified, but he’s been removed from the match due to injury.

During the finish of tonight’s qualifier, Cameron Grimes hit his Cave In double stomp on Kushida as Kushida had Dream locked in the Hoverboard Lock. Grimes then pinned Kushida to get the win.

The final two participants for the ladder match will be determined by second chance qualifying matches on next week’s episode of NXT. Johnny Gargano vs. Ridge Holland and Finn Balor vs. Dream are the final two qualifying matches. Those four wrestlers didn’t win their original qualifiers but weren’t involved in the fall either.

The North American Championship was declared vacant after Keith Lee won the NXT Championship from Adam Cole in their winner-take-all title vs. title match at Great American Bash night two last month. It was said that Lee didn’t want to limit the roster’s opportunities.

TakeOver XXX is taking place on Saturday, August 22.

NXT Championship match official for TakeOver XXX

The NXT Championship match is now official for TakeOver XXX.

NXT Champion Keith Lee will defend his title against Karrion Kross at the Saturday, August 22 TakeOver special. That was made official on tonight’s NXT, which also featured an angle where Lee was hit in the face with a fireball.

Kross warned Lee last month that everyone would suffer unless Lee gave him a title shot. Lee accepted the challenge, telling Kross to pick the time and place. But NXT general manager William Regal said he wouldn’t be bullied into making championship matches and told Kross that title shots had to be earned. Kross then sent a message to Lee and Regal last week by causing destruction backstage.

Kross laid out Danny Burch during that destruction, setting up a match between them on NXT tonight. Lee came down to the ring with a contract in his hand after Kross got the win. Kross and Scarlett left the ring when Lee came out. Lee got on the microphone and said he wasn’t surprised. Lee said he offered for Kross to earn his title shot, but Kross didn’t want to do that. Lee said he instead pleaded with Regal and promised that he wouldn’t put his hands on Kross until TakeOver if Regal made the match.

Scarlett took the contract, Kross signed it, and she then slid it back into the ring. When Lee opened the contract, a fireball came out of it and hit him in the face.

Lee was taken to the hospital as part of the fireball angle. Later in the show, it was said that Lee vowed that Kross would be a dead man at TakeOver.

Lee has been NXT Champion since defeating Adam Cole for the title at Great American Bash night two last month. This will be the second time that Kross has wrestled at a TakeOver special. He made his TakeOver debut by defeating Tommaso Ciampa at TakeOver: In Your House in June.

Here’s the updated card for TakeOver XXX:

  • NXT Champion Keith Lee defending against Karrion Kross
  • Adam Cole vs. Pat McAfee
  • NXT Women’s Champion Io Shirai defending against Dakota Kai
  • Ladder match for the vacant NXT North American Championship (Bronson Reed, Damian Priest, Cameron Grimes, and two more wrestlers will take part in the match)

Adam Cole vs. Pat McAfee official for NXT TakeOver XXX

Update

Adam Cole vs. Pat McAfee is now official for NXT TakeOver XXX after McAfee posted a video accepting the challenge that was issued to him. The show is taking place on Saturday, August 22.

**********

A match between Adam Cole and Pat McAfee looks to be set for NXT TakeOver XXX.

Triple H made an appearance on ESPN’s Get Up this morning to discuss Cole and McAfee’s confrontation from last night’s NXT. During the appearance, Triple H challenged McAfee to face Cole at TakeOver XXX.

WWE.com wrote about Triple H’s challenge to McAfee:

You want to be famous Pat McAfee? Triple H is here to do that for you.

After a wild finish to NXT, Triple H joined ESPN’s ‘Get Up’ this morning to deliver a major challenge for NXT TakeOver XXX. The 14-time World Champion extended an invitation for Pat McAfee to face Adam Cole in the ring during the August 22 event.

The NFL Pro Bowler and the longest reigning NXT Champion had been locked in a heated war of words, but the pair had appeared to reach a truce before last night’s edition of the black and gold brand. The peace wouldn’t last long as an incensed Cole confronted McAfee on commentary, and the two had to be separated by officials. McAfee got in the final brutal message however, as the man who made his career with his right foot delivered an earth-shattering punt to Cole before being escorted out the door.

Will McAfee be willing to accept and step into Cole’s world at NXT TakeOver XXX? Stay tuned to WWE Digital for updates.

Don’t miss an epic NXT TakeOver XXX on August 22 at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT on the award-winning WWE Network. And catch NXT on Wednesday nights at 8/7 C on the USA Network.

“A lot just happened,” McAfee tweeted after Triple H’s appearance on ESPN.

“Let me make this crystal clear for everyone, especially you @PatMcAfeeShow…Hunter is the one who can make this match happen, but I will be the one kicking your ass at #TakeOverXXX…if you’re as bad as you think you are, accept. I dare you,” Cole wrote.

Cole and McAfee’s confrontation from last night’s NXT was the follow up to an angle that was shot on McAfee’s radio show last month. McAfee is a sports media personality and former All-Pro punter for the Indianapolis Colts who also works as a contributor for WWE.

Two matches have been officially confirmed for TakeOver XXX thus far. Io Shirai will defend her NXT Women’s Championship against Dakota Kai at the event. There will also be a five-man ladder match for the vacant NXT North American Championship. Bronson Reed and Damian Priest have already qualified for the ladder match.

Women’s title match official for NXT TakeOver XXX

NXT Women’s Champion Io Shirai has her challenger for TakeOver XXX.

Dakota Kai defeated Rhea Ripley in a number one contender’s match on tonight’s NXT and was confirmed as Shirai’s challenger for TakeOver. After interference by Mercedes Martinez, Kai hit the GTK on Ripley to get the win.

Martinez, who is the newest member of the Robert Stone Brand, continued to attack Ripley after the match and gave her an Air Raid Crash. Ripley has feuded with the Robert Stone Brand and defeated Stone & Aliyah in a handicap match at Great American Bash night one last month. The stipulation of that match was that Ripley would have to join the Robert Stone Brand if she lost.

June’s TakeOver: In Your House event was headlined by Shirai defeating Charlotte Flair and Ripley in a triple threat match to win the NXT Women’s Championship. She’s defended the title once since then, retaining against Tegan Nox on NXT three weeks ago. There was an angle after that match where Kai laid out Shirai with a kick to the face.

Shirai & Nox defeated Kai & Candice LeRae in a tag match on NXT last week after Kai forced LeRae to tag back in.

TakeOver XXX is taking place on Saturday, August 22. A five-man ladder match for the vacant NXT North American Championship has also been announced for the show. Bronson Reed and Dexter Lumis are the first two wrestlers who have qualified for that match.

Bronson Reed qualifies for NXT North American title ladder match

Bronson Reed is the first wrestler to qualify for the NXT North American Championship ladder match at TakeOver XXX.

Reed qualified for TakeOver by defeating Roderick Strong and Johnny Gargano in a triple threat match on NXT tonight. This will be the first time Reed has wrestled on a TakeOver show. His win tonight was put over on commentary as the biggest of his career.

Gargano hit the One Final Beat DDT on Strong in the triple threat match and put his arm over Strong to pin him, but Reed hit a splash from the top rope. Reed then pinned Strong to get the win.

Tonight’s NXT opened with the announcement that Keith Lee has vacated the North American Championship. He defeated Adam Cole in their winner-take-all title vs. title match two weeks ago to win the NXT Championship and retain the North American Championship.

Lee said he wanted as many people as possible to get a chance to win the North American title. NXT general manager William Regal then announced that there will be a series of triple threat matches starting tonight to determine the participants for a ladder match to crown a new North American Champion at TakeOver XXX.

The ladder match will feature five wrestlers in total.

TakeOver XXX is taking place on Saturday, August 22. The event was originally supposed to be TakeOver: Boston.

New Women’s Champion crowned at NXT TakeOver: In Your House

The NXT women’s division has a new champion.

In the main event of TakeOver: In Your House tonight, Io Shirai defeated Charlotte Flair and Rhea Ripley in a triple threat match to win the NXT Women’s Championship. Charlotte had Ripley locked in the Figure Eight at the end of the match, but Shirai hit a moonsault from the top rope on Ripley and pinned Ripley to win the title.

Charlotte had been NXT Women’s Champion since winning the title from Ripley at WrestleMania 36.

This is the first title that Shirai has held in WWE.

Shirai previously challenged Charlotte for the title on an episode of NXT last month. Charlotte got disqualified in that match for using a kendo stick. Ripley then made her return to NXT television, starting the three-way feud that led to tonight’s title match.

Ripley hit an avalanche Riptide on Charlotte during the match tonight, but Shirai broke up the pin. Ripley put Shirai in the Prism Trap, but Charlotte then used a kendo stick.

At one point in tonight’s match, Shirai hit a crossbody on Charlotte and Ripley from the doorway that was part of the set for the show.

This was the second time that a women’s match has main evented an NXT TakeOver event. The only other women’s match to headline a TakeOver was Bayley and Sasha Banks’ 30-minute iron man match at TakeOver: Respect in 2015.

NXT TakeOver In Your House live results: Three title matches

For the first time in more than 20 years, In Your House makes its return tonight in the form of an NXT TakeOver special.

Three title matches are set for the show. The NXT Championship will be up for grabs as Adam Cole puts his title on the line against Velveteen Dream in a Backlot Brawl. If Dream loses, he can’t challenge for the NXT title again as long as Cole is champion.

The NXT Women’s Championship will be on the line in a triple threat match between Charlotte Flair, Rhea Ripley, and Io Shirai. Charlotte has been champion since winning the title from Ripley at WrestleMania 36.

NXT North American Champion Keith Lee is also defending his title against Johnny Gargano. On NXT last week, Candice LeRae & Gargano defeated Mia Yim & Lee after Gargano stabbed Lee in the eye with his car keys.

Karrion Kross (w/ Scarlett) will make his TakeOver debut against Tommaso Ciampa, Finn Balor is taking on Damian Priest, and Yim, Tegan Nox & Shotzi Blackheart will face LeRae, Dakota Kai & Raquel Gonzalez in a six-woman tag match.

The event starts at 7 p.m. Eastern time. There will also be a 30-minute pre-show prior to that.

NXT TakeOver: In Your House pre-show:

Former WWE announcer Todd Pettengil appeared the pre-show. He hosted many of the original In Your House pay-per-views in the mid-’90s.

Scott Stanford, Sam Roberts and Pat McAffee hyped up the show early on. McAffee was off-set, sitting at his own desk.

Before they started, Sam Roberts explained that right now is the “golden era” for NXT and then compared the current scene to the idea of social darwinism. Yikes. Not the best term to use on television around these days.

The announce team continued running down tonight’s card. They showed a short clip of Tomasso Ciampa walking outside the venue.

Pat McAffee talked about the Keith Lee vs. Johnny Gargano match later on. He Gargano a scumbag and made fun of his clothes and his recent heel-ish behavior of late.

A promo montage aired for Adam Cole vs. Velveteen Dream. They aired clips from the angle lead-up and included the segment where commissioner William Regal explained the stipulations to Cole over Skype. Dream vowed to capture the belt in tonight’s Backlot Brawl.

Sam Roberts said that Bret Hart vs. Hakushi from the first In Your House was his all-time favorite match of the series.

A package of Johnny Gargano and Candace LeRae aired next, followed up with more clips from NXT TV forwarding the current angle between Gargano and Keith Lee, or Gargano/LeRae vs. Lee/Mia Yim.

Stanford explained how Lee was still angry over Gargano using his car keys on Lee’s eyes. Roberts explained that this would be the first time we’ve seen Garagno “like this,” as a heel, and that his recent mean-streak would help him beat Lee tonight. Announcers then went over the women’s trios match of LeRae’s team vs. Mia Yim’s team.

A package for Finn Balor vs. Damian Priest was next. “Attack the guy, get the push,” Balor explained. Roberts said that this might the “low-key most important match tonight.”

The final montage on the pre-show focused on Charlotte Flair vs. Io Shirai vs. Rhea Ripley for the NXT Women’s title tonight. In the voiceover narration, it was explained to the audience that this was a “battle for valor.”

NXT TakeOver: In Your House

Todd Pettengil reappeared. He did the voiceovers for tonight’s show and sounds exactly the same. I feel like I’m watching an episode of WWF Mania.

Code Orange performed next.

NXT TakeOver: In Your House

*****

Six-woman tag team match: Mia Yim, Shotzi Blackheart & Tegan Nox defeated Candace LeRae, Dakota Kai, & Raquel Gonzalez

The venue was designed to look like an In Your House event in the ‘90s. It worked in a setting like this.

There was a “this is awesome’ chant before the match by staff behind the plexiglas in the crowd. Forcing chants here isn’t necessary.

Yim and LeRae were the first in, though LeRae tagged out before the two even touched. Reina Gonzalez was in next.

Nox and Kai were really good together in this. Kai clearly relishes the heel role she’s in these days.

Shotzi Blackheart did a dive to the floor but Gonzalez caught and ragdoll’d her. Yim followed up with a dive, then LeRae did a springboard plancha. Nox did a somersault senton from the top onto all wrestlers.

Employees in the crowd chanted “N-X-T!” once this part of the match wrapped.

Kai, and later Gonzalez, worked over Blackheart back in the ring.

Blackheart finally tagged out to Yim after taking a beating for a few minutes. Yim pinned LeRae with a bridging dragon suplex for two. LeRae responded with a release German suplex and the two were out for a few moments.

After Gonzalez used a falling power bomb on Nox, LeRae and Yim ended up brawling on the floor and into the backstage area. This allowed Blackheart and Nox to take out Gonzalez; Nox then pinned Kai clean with the Shiniest Wizard running knee-strike.

Finn Balor defeated Damian Priest

Balor jumped Priest before the bell and landed a shotgun dropkick that sent Priest to the floor. The bell rang soon after, and Priest was able to shift the momentum early. Early on, he started throwing the steel steps around ringside, as though he had a plan for them. He sidewalk-slammed Balor onto the apron from one of those steps next. Balor going above and beyond for Priest in this match.

Priest taunted Balor while he used a half-nelson facelock on him. Balor countered out of it with a jawbreaker. He landed a perfect flying forearm next, then brought the match back out to the floor. Balor went nuts with stomps on Priest, who was prone against the crowd barricade.

Priest used a gigantic Broken Arrow (aka Falcon Arrow) on Balor. Balor rallied back with a standing double stomp and the two were both out.

Priest did a box jump onto the apron towards the end of this. He then grabbed Balor and did a Razor’s Edge onto the edge of the apron.

Balor made another comeback late and took Priest out with a Slingblade. Priest countered with a few high roundhouse kicks. Balor came back at Priest with another shotgun dropkick, but when he went for the Coup de Grace off the top, Priest grabbed him by the throat, climbed to the ropes, then did a huge flying sit-out chokeslam … for two.

The employees chanted a lot while both sold for a minute after the nearfall. The final spot saw Priest try using another Razor’s Edge on Balor, this time to the floor on the aforementioned steel steps, but Balor escaped and kicked him, which knocked Priest to the floor. I think the idea here was for Priest to land flat onto the steel step, but because it was in a horizontal position, Priest landed on the middle and lower part of his back. It made a loud thud when he hit the steel and it looked rough, more like something you’d see on MTV Jackass.

Balor took care of Priest back in the ring, and finally put him away with the Coup de Grace diving double-stomp for the win. Balor stared Priest down after the match.

NXT U.S. Championship match: Keith Lee (c) vs. Johnny Garganno

Before Gargano got to the ring, we saw him inside the In Your House set, designed like the interior of an actual house. There was a framed picture of Dok Hendrix hanging inside the place, which Gargano shot a thumbs-up gesture to before heading to the ring.

The backside of Keith Lee’s tights read “BLACK LIVES MATTER” in pink and black letters.

Keith Lee threw some high roundhouse kicks early on in the match but missed. Since Gargano couldn’t get an early advantage on Lee, he rolled to the floor. Lee went after him, which is where Gargano got a few sneaky licks in. When he tried kicking Lee’s head off but missed, he kicked the steel steps. Him and Lee then had a funny staredown, Gargano in the role of chickensh*t heel.

Gargano ran away and tried going back into the house, which was apparently locked. Lee krept up on him and we saw the scene from the “security cam” point of view, in black and white, as if we were also inside the house. Cool idea here.

Garganno did a great job making Lee feel invincible. He chipped away at Lee back in the ring by climbing on top of him in the corner and laying in punches, then tried wearing Lee down to the mat with a cobra clutch.

When Gargano went for a slingshot spear, Lee stepped to the side and dropped a knee on Gargano in response.

The two lots traded forearms next. Lee went for a pop-up power bomb, but Gargano held on and turned the hold into an armbar. Lee used a Rampage Bomb to break the hold. He took Gargano’s head off with a standing lariat for a close two.

Lee went for Bg Bang Catasrophe but Gargano countered it into a sunset flip pin. Lee landed what Tom Phillips called a “one-armed spinebuster” which is also known as a chokeslam.

Gargano finally spiked Lee headfirst on the floor with a flying tornado DDT, but he had trouble getting Lee back into the ring because he was too big, so Gargano rolled back into the ring and broke the count, which the ref scolded him for.

Gargano went back to the floor to get Lee back into the ring, but Lee was back up. He used a pounce that sent Gargano flying through the plexiglass near the audience area.

Candace LeRae came out to distract Lee, but Mia Yim followed her out. When those two started fighting, Gargano gouged Lee’s eyes again with keys. Two-count. Before Lee could get up, Gargano superkicked Lee in the head. Two-count.

After landing a Spirit Bomb, then a power bomb into Big Bang Catasrophe for the emphatic win.

Backlot Brawl for the NXT championship: Adam Cole (c) defeated Velveteen Dream

Adam Cole came to the match in a giant truck with a slick Undisputed Era design painted on the sides. He cut a short promo on top of the truck until Velveteen Dream rolled up in a yellow Lamborghini. He dressed like Negan from The Walking Dead and carried with him a baseball bat not unlike Negan’s “Lucille.” Dream also had a picture of Hulk Hogan airbrushed on his jacket.

This was a part wrestling, cinematch. HD cameras were in use. It looked kind of cool, honestly.

The black NXT ring was in the center of a circle of parked cars. Each of the car’s lights were turned on, lighting up the ring. There were also spotlights shining down from the “neighborhood” set they filmed on. It’s an interesting arrangement, much better seen than read about.

Cole went to smash Dream with his belt before the match, but Dream rolled him up for two.

Cole then shouted “I’m leaving!” and rolled out of the ring with his belt and into a car. Dream started hitting the car with his bat until Cole got out.

The two were brawling in the lot when an SUV rolled into the scene.

“Did anyone order an Uber?” A female voice came from inside the vehicle. Dream tried throwing Cole into the Uber, but they ended up on the ground soon. Uber was gone after this.

The two walked and brawled around the set until Cole escaped from the lot. Dream shouted “Come out, come out, wherever you are!” like he was in Cape Fear

Cole doused Dream with a fire extinguisher when he jumped out from behind a door. He was hiding. Cole yelled at Dream and called him stupid.

Dream rallied back and landed a double ax-handle off the apron to the ground. We could see a lot of extra production staff around ringside trying to keep things lit.

Dream brought out a ladder planned on jumping off it until the rest of Undisputed Era showed up in a sedan. They honked their horn then went after Dream, who was still on the ladder. Then, Cole’s three teammates started tossing him folding chairs to use on Dream.

“Tortured Artist” Dexter Loomis then appeared from nowhere and took care UE, scaring them to the back after pounding on them for a bit.

Cole’s arm was scarred, bleeding and filled with glass by the end of this. When he went for the Panama Sunrise back in the ring, Dream countered it into the Dream Driver.

Next, Dream landed the Purple Rainmaker flying elbowdrop onto Cole, who was sitting on a chair. Two-count.

Cole landed a low blow on Dream while Dream trash-talked him, then used the Panama Sunrise onto a pile of steel chairs for the win. Cars honked their horns, then Cole celebrated on top of his Undisputed Era truck. “Nobody can beat me for this! Nobody!” It wasn’t perfect, but it felt fresh, if anything.

Todd Pettengil spoofed his old 1-900-WWE-SHOP segments from back in the day; it was actually an ad for WWE Shop online. DX then appeared and pretended like they didn’t know how to use a computer, joking around that they’re old. It was hokey but so were the original events. It was clever.

Karrion Kross (w/ Scarlett Bordeaux) defeated Tomasso Ciampa

Ciampa landed elbows early on, but Kross no-sold them, then landed a hard standing front kick into Ciampa’s face in the corner. Kross then launched him from the corner with a uranage-stype suplex.

On the floor, Kross picked Ciampa up with two hands and slammed him back-first against the apron. Kross tossed Ciampa twice more with his overheard arm-clutch suplex, then washed Ciampa’s face with his knee in the corner. Mauro Ranallo made a UWFi in reference to Kross’ style.

Ciampa tried chopping his way out of harm’s way, and after a bit of effort, he was able to plant a running knee into Kross’ face, then tried pinning him after a draping DDT for two.

Kross returned Ciampa’s attack, first spinning him into the air with an inverted F-5, then forced Ciampa to pass out in the Kross Jacket, a modified neck crank submission. The referee called for the bell once Ciampa was out.

“Karrion Kross just routed Tomasso Ciampa!” Great call from Tom Phillips after the match.

This was probably the best match on of the night, or at least the most effective, and Kross truly came across like a monster. IMPACT really should have let him use more of his shoot-style offense, because in 2020, that’s the kind of stuff that will help guys get over inside the ring, not just the size.

Io Shirai defeated Charlotte Flair (c) and Rhea Ripley in a Triple Threat match to become NXT Women’s champion

Flair rolled to the floor and insisted that Shirai and Ripley start the match off. Ripley went after Flair on the floor, so Shirai went after Ripley. From here, the match was underway.

Flair took over early on, chopping both her opponents and talking trash at them until they both fought out. No alliance here, though, as Shirai and Ripley went right back after each other.

Ripley went for a somersault senton off the apron but missed when Flair side-stepped out of the way. Flair then smashed Ripley into the barricades ringside.

Shirai shot back with a frankensteiner off the apron to the floor on Flair.

Flair had a Boston crab on Shirai for a while. Ripley finally returned to the match and took out Flair. Shirai landed a 619 to Flair next; Ripley had been knocked to the floor again.

Flair took Ripley and Shirai out with a double spear for two separate two-counts. She then went for a double moonsault but took too long: Ripey moved and Shirai got her knees up while Flair was on her way down.

The three then exchanged high spots and submissions. Shirai landed a big springboard dropkick on Ripley, then landed the Bullet Train knees attack. As Shirai celebrated, Flair caught her with Natural Selection, then locked Shirai into the figure eight until Ripley dragged Flair to the floor.

Shirai then landed an absolutely perfect plancha onto Ripley.

Flair took Shirai and threw her into the event monitors on set. Ripley smashed a plant on Flair.

Shirai then did a goregeous-looking cross body block from the top of the In Your House doorway. She got great hangtime.

Shirai tried a top-rope Frankensteiner but Ripley blocked it; Flair then ran over and booted Ripley in the face. Ripley fought back and landed the Riptide to Flair from off the ropes. Shirai broke up the close two-count.

Ripley caught Shirai in the Prism Lock, but Flair broke it up when she brought a kendo stick into the ring and whacked both Ripley and Shirai with it. She then put Ripley into the Figure Eight leglock, but before Ripley could tap, Shirai landed a moonsault off the top onto Ripley and pinned her. Since Flair was still entangled inside the Figure Eight, she couldn’t break the pinfall attempt. Shirai “didn’t quite get all of it” with regard to that final moonsault, but it’s negligible, as much of this match was really good.

Final thoughts:

No show today will come close to perfect due to world’s condition right now; real fans aren’t even allowed to attend yet.

But if you’ve been jonesing for a solid night of modern wrestling, this was a pretty much a success.

It wasn’t the greatest night of pro wrestling ever, but it did the trick. And there weren’t any bad matches, which is still par for the course for TakeOver shows.

I imagine the most-talked about match might be the Backlot Brawl. As mentioned earlier, it wasn’t a perfect match, but it felt and looked fresh, which is what every company needs right now the plan is to continue running empty venues. The match itself wasn’t great, but was creative enough to keep me distracted from Dream’s wrestling.

The main event triple threat was really good, but of course would have been that much better with a crowd. Flair was outstanding in this. Shirai was perfect aside from the weird landing on the moonsault finish. Ripley felt like a natural in this, which is impressive since three-way matches never feel smooth. It was well put-together.

Overall, it was a solid supercard from the NXT crew, with Io Shirai’s title win as the only real surprise of the night.

Six-woman tag match added to NXT TakeOver: In Your House

A sixth match has been added to the card for NXT TakeOver: In Your House.

It was announced on NXT tonight that Mia Yim, Tegan Nox & Shotzi Blackheart will face Candice LeRae, Dakota Kai & Raquel Gonzalez in a six-woman tag match at the TakeOver special. It’s taking place on Sunday (June 7).

The match was announced after those six wrestlers were involved in a brawl on tonight’s NXT. Yim vs. LeRae on tonight’s show ended in a double countout when they fought outside of the ring. They fought to the top of the stage, with LeRae reversing a powerbomb and giving Yim a hurricanrana into the video screen. Nox came out to stop LeRae from attacking Yim further, then Kai, Gonzalez, and Blackheart all got involved.

A mixed tag match between Yim & Keith Lee and LeRae & Johnny Gargano then took place on NXT tonight. LeRae rolled up Yim to get the win after Yim was distracted by Gargano stabbing Lee in the eye with his car keys.

Lee is defending his NXT North American Championship against Gargano at TakeOver: In Your House. Here’s the updated card for the show:

NXT Championship match official for TakeOver: In Your House

Velveteen Dream is getting one more shot at Adam Cole’s NXT Championship.

It was announced tonight that Cole will defend his NXT Championship against Dream at TakeOver: In Your House. The match has a stipulation where, if Cole wins, Dream can’t challenge for the title again as long as Cole is champion.

That announcement was made during a negotiation between Cole and general manager William Regal on tonight’s NXT. After making the match official for TakeOver, Regal added that he’s going to find a location for Cole vs. Dream that will shine a spotlight on their talents in a setting that’s worthy of the NXT Championship.

Cole retained his title against Dream on NXT three weeks ago. Roderick Strong, Bobby Fish, and Dexter Lumis all got involved in that match, and Dream got a visual pinfall on Cole following a ref bump. Strong then defeated Lumis on NXT last week. After the match, Lumis put Strong in a choke. Cole and Fish were about to attack Lumis, but Dream made the save and took them out.
