Title change takes place at NJPW Anniversary show

A title change took place on Friday as New Japan Pro Wrestling celebrated its 54th Anniversary.

The Anniversary event in Tokyo saw Taiji Ishimori & Robbie X defeat Ichiban Sweet Boys (Robbie Eagles & Kosei Fujita) to become the new IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Champions. At the conclusion of the 15-minute match, Robbie X pinned Fujita to win the belts.

Ishimori and Robbie X are members of the newly formed Unbound Company faction in NJPW. This is the first title Robbie X has held in the promotion, while Ishimori is a multi-time Junior Heavyweight champion as both a singles and tag team wrestler.

It didn’t take long for Ishimori & Robbie X’s first challengers to emerge. Immediately after their title win, they were attacked by Francesco Akira & Jakob Austin Young, furthering the feud between Unbound Company and United Empire.

A second title match headlined the Anniversary show card with DOUKI defeating Master Wato to remain IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion. Here are the quick results from the event:

NJPW 54th Anniversary show —

  • IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion DOUKI defeated Master Wato to retain

Two title matches official for NJPW Anniversary event

NJPW has booked a couple of title bouts for its upcoming Anniversary event.

On March 6, NJPW will celebrate its 54th birthday with an Anniversary show at Ota City Gymnasium in Tokyo. It’s been confirmed that the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship and Junior Heavyweight Tag Team titles will be on the line. DOUKI is defending his belt against Master Wato, while Taiji Ishimori & Robbie X are challenging Robbie Eagles & Kosei Fujita for their tag team gold.

This will be the second defense for both DOUKI and Eagles & Fujita during their respective reigns.

NJPW wrote:

  • The IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship will be on the line when Master Wato challenges DOUKI. Mere days after HOUSE OF TORTURE rallied around DOUKI to assist him to a first defence of the junior heavyweight title against El Desperado in Korakuen, Wato ensured the H.O.T victory lap was cut short, striking with the Tstenkaku German to pin Japones Del Mal and assert himself as the next number one contender. As the next chapter of HOUSE OF TORTURE with Ren Narita at its helm continues, will the self proclaimed ‘junior heavyweight god’ DOUKI retain by hook and crook again, or on the site of his Best of the Super Jr. tournament victory in 2023, can Wato finally complete his journey to Grand Master status?
  • Also official for Anniversary is a battle over the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championships, Robbie Eagles and Kosei Fujita defending against Robbie X and Taiji Ishimori. The last time NJPW was in Ota for New Year Dash, the Ichiban Sweet Boys Eagles and Fujita won the junior tag gold by defeating Robbie X in a four way bout. When Ishimori scored tag team victory for himself and Hiromu Takahashi at New Beginning in Osaka however, defeating United Empire’s Jakob Austin Young and Francesco Akira, the Unbound Co. name seemed to grow stonger in tag contention. Robbie would provide the assist to prevent a post match assault on Hiromu, and backstage, Ishimori would issue a challenge. These two teams tore the house down in a junior tag title clash in Korakuen last April as well as in the Super Junior Tag League in the autumn to bring them to a 1-1 record. This time, which team will not only bring down the house, but bring home the bacon?

The Anniversary show will air live on NJPW World with English commentary available. Along with these title bouts, the card includes two opening-round matches in New Japan Cup 2026.

NJPW 54th Anniversary Show (Friday, March 6) —

  • IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion DOUKI defends against Master Wato
  • IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Champions Robbie Eagles & Kosei Fujita defend against Taiji Ishimori & Robbie X
  • New Japan Cup first-round match: YOSHI-HASHI vs. Jake Lee
  • New Japan Cup first-round match: OSKAR vs. Callum Newman

NJPW 53rd Anniversary show live results: Goto vs. Tanahashi IWGP title match

NJPW celebrates its 53rd Anniversary tonight in Tokyo, headlined by two company stalwarts doing battle for the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship.

Hirooki Goto defends the IWGP World title against company president Hiroshi Tanahashi in the main event. It will be the seventeenth career singles meeting between the two, with Tanahashi holding a 13-3 edge. With Tana’s retirement date already set for January 4, 2026, this may be his last shot at NJPW’s top prize.

In the semi-main, IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion El Desperado defends against Francesco Akira.

An eight-man tag with LIJ’s Tetsuya Naito, Yota Tsuji, Shingo Takagi, and Hiromu Takahashi facing House of Torture’s EVIL, Yujiro Takahashi, SHO, and Dick Togo is set for the undercard.

The show will kick off with an open challenge for the NJPW World TV title, with El Phantasmo to defend against a mystery opponent.

Tonight’s show is also the final stop before the New Japan Cup single elimination tournament begins on tomorrow’s event.

**********

Walker Stewart greeted the English-speaking audiences tuning in, joined by the returning Chris Charlton, who hadn’t been seen on commentary since Wrestle Dynasty.

El Phantasmo defeated Master Wato for the NJPW World TV Championship

Wato and Phantasmo locked up, with the latter increasingly agitated. The pair traded high-flying and acrobatic maneuvers, mainly flying headscissor takedowns. Wato flipped over the top rope to Phantasmo on the outside. The Canadian clung as hard as he could to the match, but Wato spiked him on his head and cranked his neck. A well-placed dropkick swung the match in Phantasmo’s favor, capitalized by chops to the chest and a springboard crossbody. Phantasmo soared from the top rope, successfully landing a moonsault to the outside.

Wato mounted a comeback with an arm hold and a crucifix hold to ground Phantasmo, failing a rollup in the process. Seeking to disorient the champion, Wato rolled around while holding a pin to no avail. Phantasmo gained his momentum back, using a Burning Hammer for a nearfall. Wato’s Tsutenkaku resulted in the same outcome. Phantasmo landed a Thunderkiss ’86, beating the clock and gaining the win.

El Phantasmo’s first TV title defense post-Jeff Cobb went well. If he continues to take on members of the undercard, even better. Use a title like this to elevate some people as more talents age out.

BULLET CLUB (Bad Luck Fale & Chase Owens) defeated TMDK (Hartley Jackson & Ryohei Oiwa)

Oiwa easily manhandled Owens, using his overall strength and control to keep him at bay. Owens followed this up by kicking Jackson into the blue steel barricades. Jackson at last collided with Fale, withstanding the latter’s stiffness. His attempt to fireman’s carry Fale went about as expected, with Owens interfering to rub further salt into the wound. Oiwa returned, delivering a gut wrench suplex to Owens but suffered another collision to the barricades. Fale concluded the match with a lariat after a sneak kick by Owens for the win.

— Post-match: Owens and Oiwa had a verbal altercation, hinting at a future match between the two.

The last remnants of base Bullet Club just hanging out while a civil war is taking place between its faction’s subsets is amusing. Unexpected win, however. Nothing else to say about this short match.

BULLET CLUB War Dogs (Gedo, SANADA & Taiji Ishimori) defeated Just 4 Guys (Taichi, TAKA Michinoku & Yuya Uemura)

The War Dogs allowed no time before the bell to attack their opponents. SANADA quickly dispatched Uemura while Gedo patiently handled Michinoku. Ishimori and Gedo crushed Michinoku further as Taichi unwittingly distracted the referee in his attempt to help his partner. Michinoku continued to suffer further torment, with Gedo and Ishimori exposing the turnbuckle until he mounted a comeback and tagged Taichi in. Ishimori threw everything he had to Taichi, but he caught it and returned the offense in kind with an Axe Bomber.

Uemura made his hot tag, delivering justice to SANADA with the crowd in Ota City General Gymnasium fully in support. This babyface comeback was thwarted by Ishimori tripping Uemura. SANADA teased a guitar strike to Uemura, but instead tossed it to Uemura and feigned an injury. The referee played into his hand, ending the match in disqualification for Just 4 Guys and Uemura.

SANADA taking a page out of Eddie Guerrero’s book isn’t one I’ve seen much in NJPW as of late, so I couldn’t help but smile. Uemura and SANADA have unfinished business, and the match did a good job of promoting that.

House Of Torture (Ren Narita & Yoshinobu Kanemaru) vs. BULLET CLUB War Dogs (Drilla Moloney & Gabe Kidd) ended via count-out

Two masked assailants surprised the House of Torture members, revealing themselves to be Moloney & Kidd. The match then went to the outside, with both Kidd handling Narita and Moloney grappling Kanemaru in the stands. Kidd threatened to toss Narita over an exit balcony, but instead let him escape. Both teams ventured closer to the ring again. Kanemaru eventually found freedom from Moloney, but was sent into the chairs by Kidd. Moloney aided Kidd in flattening Narita. Narita stalled for time, battling Kidd on the outside, hoping to earn a count-out. The referee’s count reached 20; the match was over but the war continued.

— Post match: Moloney ran interference on any Young Lion attempting to save the beatdown Narita faced by Kidd, involving several tosses into the crowd chairs.

While not overly exciting, this pairing works oddly well together. Narita and Kanemaru are the strongest parts of House of Torture, but that’s not saying much. Kidd and Moloney were the highlight as usual. The crowd is as hot for Kidd as ever since January.

Los Ingobernables de Japon (Hiromu Takahashi, Shingo Takagi, Tetsuya Naito & Yota Tsuji) defeated House Of Torture (Dick Togo, EVIL, SHO & Yujiro Takahashi)

Bedlam begat this 8-man tag, with Tsuji and EVIL colliding, the former emptying the ring of House of Torture interference. After Tsuji’s one-man wrecking crew performance, Naito and Takahashi unleashed their tag team fury. This momentum was temporary, as House of Torture carefully and strategically picked apart the LIJ members. Naito endured the brunt of the odds, long enough to send SHO’s head into Takahashi’s boots.

Takagi made his grand tag, unleashing a torrent of forearms to SHO. Singlehandedly clobbering several House of Torture members, Takagi struck SHO hard. Takahashi couldn’t follow up on this and inevitably suffered a Dick-to-Dick Contact. Takahashi submitted Togo with a leg hold for the win.

The tease for EVIL versus Tsuji in the New Japan Cup was a fine advertisement for their match. Takagi and Tsuji are the ones to watch for this match. Speaking of Takagi, congratulations on the publishing of your new book!

El Desperado (c) defeated Francesco Akira for the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship

Akira made an epic yet understated entrance, determined and confident. He and Desperado traded loud chops, but the challenger met the barricade and took a shot to the head by a smartphone. The young Italian overcame the champion’s offense, wrenching the neck in a hold ended by a rope break. Desperado targeted Akira’s knee, the hope visibly draining from his body. Following a moonsault to the outside, Akira took advantage of his prone opponent by following up with a nasty Tope Con Hilo. Using his core, Akira clung onto Desperado’s hold on him, transitioning into a Destroyer.

With the crowd clapping for him, Akira unleashed a Speedfire to no avail, yet remained in control. Desperado wrought a symphony of slams onto Akira, and it was unable to put him away. Desperado capitalized with the Numero Dos multiple times, but Akira powered out. Attempting a Fireball, Akira was seconds away from victory but Desperado kicked out. Akira followed with another Fireball, thwarted by a rope break. Following a Fireplex, Akira reached for another Fireball, leading to Desperado’s Numero Dos, narrowly escaped. Hoping once more for a Fireball, Akira’s knees gave out at the last second. The champion inched closer to victory with a Pinche Loco, but Akira kicked out of his pin. He held on as long as he could, but he ultimately tapped to a final Numero Dos by Desperado.

Standout performance by Akira. Incredible selling, and it was impossible for me to not root for him. Quite possibly the most worthy match to watch from this night. Man, this was so heartbreaking.

Main Event

Hirooki Goto (c) defeated Hiroshi Tanahashi for the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship

Goto struggled initially in his earlier lock-ups with Tanahashi after the bell, but eventually trapped The Ace’s head between his legs, squeezing and holding. Tanahashi regained control via a flying crossbody and targeting Goto’s left leg. Goto chased Tanahashi’s level, evading and enduring each strike, dropping him with a lariat. Tanahashi stole Goto’s Ushigoroshi and soon exploited this with a Slingblade. Goto briefly recovered, but aggravated his left knee after a well-executed Ushigoroshi.

A series of Dragon Screw Legwhips worsened Goto’s left leg, which Tanahashi capitalized with a Texas Cloverleaf. Failing to execute a straightjacket hold, Tanahashi opted for a Slingblade. When that didn’t work, he soared with a High-Fly Flow, but missed a second attempt when Goto rolled out of the way. Goto clutched the control of the match back in his favor, but couldn’t secure a pin via inside cradle. Wincing away a swat by the challenger, Goto crushed The Ace with a GTR. A Shouten Kai to Tanahashi at last switched the crowd’s applause from him to the champion. Goto at last, defeated Tanahashi with a Shouten to close the main event.

— Post-match: Goto joked that if Tanahashi wrestled this type of match earlier in this career, he’d have been champion sooner. He then followed up by expressing deep gratitude for Tanahashi. The Ace beckoned the roster’s babyfaces as he responded that he leaves the fate of New Japan Pro-Wrestling in Goto’s hands, requesting he leads the promotion to new heights. Goto then addressed Yuji Nagata from commentary, challenging Blue Justice. Nagata accepted. Goto ended the night by stating that the Goto Revolution has just begun.

Tanahashi played mean, yet respectfully. Goto sold his left knee well. Tanahashi’s putting in the best final year he can. The way Goto eventually won over the initially pro-Tanahashi crowd adds much more to his reign, taking the love of the crowd from one of the company’s biggest stars.

A primarily House of Torture-centric show, the 53rd Anniversary Show had some standout performances, but the Junior Heavyweight and World Heavyweight matches are the ones to watch.

IWGP World title match official for NJPW 53rd Anniversary show main event

New IWGP World Heavyweight Champion Hirooki Goto officially has a date and an opponent for his first title defense.

The main event of NJPW’s 53rd Anniversary show on Thursday, March 6 will officially be Goto vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi for the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship. Now confirmed by NJPW, the matchup was proposed by Goto in a backstage promo after his title win at the New Beginning in Osaka. Goto said he wanted to give Tanahashi a shot at the IWGP World title before Tanahashi retires from the ring in January 2026.

More than 20 years into his NJPW career, Goto finally became World Champion by dethroning Zack Sabre Jr. at Tuesday’s New Beginning in Osaka event.

The winner of Goto vs. Tanahashi will defend the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship in the main event of NJPW Sakura Genesis on Saturday, April 5, facing the winner of New Japan Cup 2025.

NJPW’s 53rd Anniversary show is taking place from Ota City Gym in Tokyo and will air live on NJPW World. Here is the full lineup:

  • IWGP World Heavyweight Champion Hirooki Goto defends against Hiroshi Tanahashi
  • IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion El Desperado defends against Francesco Akira

Title challenge issued for NJPW Anniversary show main event

Hirooki Goto is finally IWGP Champion — and he already has an opponent in mind for his first title defense.

More than 20 years since debuting for NJPW, Goto won his first World title by defeating Zack Sabre Jr. at the New Beginning in Osaka. Goto spoke backstage after the match and announced that he wants to defend the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship against Hiroshi Tanahashi at NJPW’s 53rd Anniversary show.

Yuji Nagata also confronted Goto backstage following Tuesday’s event, setting up another future title match if Goto retains against Tanahashi.

NJPW wrote:

There was more drama bnackstage though, as Goto vowed to ‘keep this revolution going.’ Goto said that he wanted to give Hiroshi Tanahashi one last title challenge before the Ace retires, suggesting March 6 and Anniversary as the spot. Yuji Nagata also wanted his first challenge in ten years, a challenge Goto granted if he retains; as Goto promised to ‘show the young generation how it’s done,’ what is to come?

The 48-year-old Tanahashi is retiring from the ring in January 2026. One of the biggest stars in NJPW history, he’s held the IWGP Heavyweight title eight times.

Tanahashi is also the president of NJPW, having been appointed to that key behind-the-scenes role in December 2023.

The Anniversary event is taking place from Ota City Gymnasium in Tokyo on Thursday, March 6. The only match that’s been confirmed so far is El Desperado vs. Francesco Akira for the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship.

IWGP Junior title match set for NJPW 53rd Anniversary show

The first match is set for NJPW’s 53rd Anniversary event scheduled for Thursday, March 6.

IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion El Desperado will defend the title against Francesco Akira in a bout announced on Tuesday night.

Akira laid out the challenge to Desperado following Desperado’s successful title defense against Kosei Fujita on Tuesday’s Road to The New Beginning event at Korakuen Hall.

Desperado is currently in his fifth reign as IWGP Junior Champion, and has managed two successful defenses since capturing the title from DOUKI at Wrestle Kingdom 19 on January 4. That match was stopped early due to injury when DOUKI suffered an arm injury on a senton to the floor.

The annual Anniversary event kicks off a huge month for NJPW with the single elimination New Japan Cup tournament kicking off the following day on March 7. New Japan Cup matches may also be added to the Anniversary show.

NJPW’s 53rd Anniversary event will stream on NJPW World on Thursday, March 6.

NJPW 52nd Anniversary show live results: New Japan Cup begins

NJPW celebrates their 52nd Anniversary today in Tokyo on a show where the 2024 New Japan Cup begins.

The New Japan Cup kicks off with three tournament matches on today’s show, including the in-ring NJPW debut of Jack Perry against Shota Umino.

YOSHI-HASHI faces KENTA in another New Japan Cup contest.

Toru Yano will take on Yujiro Takahashi of Bullet Club’s House of Torture in the other New Japan Cup match on the show.

The event will be headlined by IWGP Word Heavyweight Champion Tetsuya Naito facing IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion SHO in a non-title match.

SANADA, Taichi, Yuya Uemura & DOUKI of Just Five Guys face House of Torture’s EVIL, Ren Narita, Yoshinobu Kanemaru & Dick Togo in an eight-man tag.

United Empire’s TJP, Francesco Akira & Callum Newman take on Bullet Club War Dogs David Finlay, Gabe Kidd & Gedo in a trios match.

Hirooki Goto, Tomohiro Ishii, El Desperado & Boltin Oleg face LIJ’s Shingo Takagi, Yota Tsuji, Hiromu Takahashi & BUSHI in another eight-man.

GoD’s Hikuleo & E Phantasmo take on TMDK’s Zack Sabre Jr. & Mikey Nicholls in another undercard tag.

Great-O-Khan & Jeff Cobb vs. Tanga Loa & Tomoaki Honma is the opener.

Great-O-Khan & Jeff Cobb (United Empire) defeated Tanga Loa & Tomoaki Honma

This was a nothing match.

After a couple of minutes of silly offense, Cobb hit Honma with Tour of the Islands to win the match. After the match, O-Khan attacked Loa ahead of their NJ Cup match.

Mikey Nicholls & Zack Sabre Jr. (TMDK) defeated El Phantasmo & Hikuleo (Guerrillas of Destiny)

ZSJ and ELP opened the match with a flashy sequence. Hikuleo and Nicholls entered next, testing each other’s strength. Once Hikuleo won out, GoD established control.

TMDK worked together to challenge Hikuleo, targeting his leg. The tandem offense continued after ELP attempted to make the save. They held on to this lead long enough for Nicholls to hit ELP with the Mikey Bomb, winning the match.

Hirooki Goto, Tomohiro Ishii, El Desperado & Oleg Boltin defeated Los Ingobernables de Japon (BUSHI, Hiromu Takahashi, Shingo Takagi & Yota Tsuji)

Ishii and Tsuji opened the match with an extended chopping battle. Ishii won out early before passing the match to Oleg. Against Oleg, Tsuji gained control took control of the match with help from the rest of LIJ.

Once Goto tagged in, he turned the match around for his team with a passionate rally. Shingo and the rest of LIJ fired back, leading to a back-and-forth between teams. In the end, Desperado won the match with a quick pin on BUSHI.

After the match, Desperado and Ishii shared an awkward handshake, perhaps teasing the future of CHAOS.

As Ishii worked his way to the back, Chase Owens ran out and hit Ishii with a package piledriver.

United Empire (Callum Newman, Francesco Akira & TJP) defeated BULLET CLUB War Dogs (David Finlay, Gabe Kidd & Gedo)

This was very good. That said, it feels a little strange to continue this immediately after the cage match.

This match opened with an electric brawl. TJP carried this excitement into his first offensive sequence. It took Finlay tagging in to slow the match down, but the intensity remained.

The War Dogs worked to isolate Newman, eventually setting up the hot tag to Akira. Akira hit the ring hot, and Kidd tried his best to match his energy. This allowed the War Dogs to maintain their momentum until TJP hit the ring. TJP then cleared the ring and dropped Gedo to win the match.

Just 5 Guys (DOUKI, SANADA, Taichi & Yuya Uemura) defeated House Of Torture (Dick Togo, EVIL, Ren Narita & Yoshinobu Kanemaru)

Yuya debuted his shaved head in this match, complete with red dye. That was the only interesting thing that happened.

The match opened with HoT shinanigans, which continued for a while. Taichi launched a rally against HoT before tagging out to Uemura, who continued the advance.

To stop Uemura from gaining any more of a lead, all of HoT attacked him. It took a full J5G rally to shift the momentum back. Uemura then hit the deadbolt suplex to win the match.

New Japan Cup: Toru Yano defeated Yujiro Takahashi

Yujiro attacked Yano before the opening bell sounded. He then removed the corner pad, which he used to strike Yano. Yujiro followed up by whipping Yano into the exposed corner and the barricade.

Yujiro handcuffed Yano onto the barricade, but Yano managed to break the railing to escape. Yano then threw Yujiro into a barricade and handcuffed him around a man on the outside. Yujiro couldn’t get loose, leaving Yano with a count-out win.

Yano advances to round two.

New Japan Cup: YOSHI-HASHI defeated KENTA

This was painfully boring.

KENTA jumped YH before the match could begin. YH answered KENTA by throwing him to the floor but missed his follow-up. This left the door open for KENTA to retake control.

Back in the ring, KENTA utilized holds and sparse kicks to maintain his lead. YH landed a pair of dropkicks to answer KENTA. A powerbomb from YH scored him a nearfall.

KENTA landed a rope-assisted DDT to reset the match. A dropkick and double foot stomp scored KENTA a nearfall. He then attempted a GTS, but YH reversed into a pin attempt, nearly eeking out a win.

KENTA dropped YH with a strike and a running knee for another nearfall. He then hoisted YH onto his shoulders, but YH reversed again, this time hitting a crucifix bomb into a pin to win the match.

Following the match, KENTA shook YH’s hand, but attacked him immediately after.

SANADA vs. YOSHI-HASHI is set for night five.

New Japan Cup: Jack Perry defeated Shota Umino

Jack Perry came to the ring in all black and a funny-looking goat head, completing his NJPW repackage.

The match opened with a back-and-forth strike exchange before Perry established control. Perry utilized strikes and holds to maintain his lead for some time.

Umino fired back with more strikes, knocking Perry to the floor. Another back-and-forth followed, ending with a big DDT from Umino onto the apron. Once Perry recovered, more back-and-forth striking followed.

A forearm to the back of Perry’s head left Shota in a strong position. He followed up with a variety of big moves before calling for the finish. Before Umino could close, House of Torture then hit the ring and beat down Umino. Perry followed up with a running knee and pinned Umino to advance to the next round.

After the match, HoT offered Perry a shirt. He put it on, signifying he is a part of the faction.

Tetsuya Naito defeated SHO

Before the match could begin, SHO attacked Naito. Once the opening bell sounded, Naito fired back, taking control and whipping SHO into the barricade.

After Naito beat on SHO for a while, SHO whipped Naito’s leg into the apron to slow the match down even more. SHO then launched a deliberate attack on Naito’s leg. Once Naito turned things around, SHO bumped the referee and attacked Naito with a chair.

After minutes on the back foot, Naito landed an enziguri and Destino from out of nowhere. To follow up, Naito hammered on SHO’s neck with strikes and a rana from the top rope.

With his back against the wall, SHO bumped the ref again. HoT rushed the ring and beat down Naito. LIJ followed them, evening the score. SHO tried hitting Naito with his wrench but ate a low blow instead. Naito then hit a Valencia and another Destino to win the match.

This was a show filled with nonsense, cheating, and House of Torture. If you were hoping New Japan was planning a post-Okada course-correct, it didn’t happen tonight.

New Bullet Club member revealed at NJPW Anniversary show

David Finlay made a statement at the NJPW 51st Anniversary Show on Monday.

After attacking former Bullet Club leader Jay White at NJPW Battle in the Valley last month, it appears the 29-year-old has joined the faction himself.

Finlay wrestled Tomohiro Ishii in the first round of the New Japan Cup in Monday’s semi-main event. He was accompanied by White’s former manager, Gedo, during his ring entrance as a Bullet Club style logo and the words “Rebel Club” flashed on the screen.

Finlay defeated Ishii cleanly after hitting Trash Panda. Gedo cut a promo after the match saying “Bullet Club needs a rebel” and it doesn’t matter that White is no longer there.

Finlay will now move on to face The Great-O-Khan in the second round on March 15.

Shota Umino also advanced in the New Japan Cup on Monday. He defeated Yujiro Takahashi and will now face Zack Sabre Jr. in the second round on March 15.

The night’s main event saw Bishamon successfully defend the IWGP Tag Team Championships against Kazuchika Okada and Hiroshi Tanahashi.

Okada vs. Ospreay headlines NJPW anniversary show lineup
