IWGP Women’s Title match added to NJPW New Beginning in Sapporo

A new match has been added to the lineup for NJPW New Beginning in Sapporo.

Mayu Iwatani will defend her IWGP Women’s Championship against Mina Shirakawa on the February 23 show, which will be night one of the two-night event. The news was announced at Stardom’s show in Osaka on Sunday.

Shirakawa and Iwatani have met twice previously in singles competition. Iwatani defeated Shirakawa in both the 2021 and 2022 5Star Grand Prix tournaments.

Iwatani defeated Mercedes Mone for the title at All-Star Grand Queendom last April. She has since defended it successfully against Hayashashita, Stephanie Vaquer, and Syuri.

In Sunday’s subscriber exclusive by our own Dave Meltzer, it was noted that Iwatani is the only wrestler under a long-term contract with Stardom due to the upcoming movie on her life that is coming out.

Iwatani teamed with AZM, Utami Hayashishita, and Nanae Takahashi on Sunday in a win over Giulia, MIRAI, Syrui, and Suzu Suzuki.

By Dave Meltzer

They opened the show announcing Hiroshi Tanahashi is off the show stemming from the injury angle at last night’s show although the injury is legit.

KATSUYA KITAMURA VS. JUICE ROBINSON

Slow basic match with Robinson winning with pulp friction.  Very hard hitting match with some sick chops and a few good near falls.  Kitamura was bleeding from the chest from the chops.

TAICHI & TAKA MICHINOKU & YOSHINOBU KANEMARU & DESPERADO VS. JUSHIN LIGER & TIGER MASK & RYUSUKE TAGUCHI & SHOTA UMINO

Miho Abe is with Taichi. This wasn’t as good as yesterday’s match.  Umino looked good down the stretch but ended up pinned by Taichi after a superkick.  Taka unmasked Tier Mask after and Miho put the mask on and stomped on Taguchi’s crotch her high heels.  Miaho was taunting Taguchi and Taguchi tripped her but she escaped.  The crowd so far isn’t nearly as hot as yesterday.  It’s tough with an afternoon show after a long evening show.  Taguchi after the match told Kevin Kelly that they broke his ass.

YUJIRO TAKAHASHI & HIKULEO (Leo Tonga) VS. TOMOHIRO ISHII & TORU YANO

Not much to this one.  Hikuleo is still green.  Yujiro isn’t much.  The highlight was watchiing Ishii build a suplex spot on Hikuleo.  The finish saw Yano give Hikuleo a low blow and Ishii clotheslined Hikuleo and Yano cradled him.  It was kept short.

TAMA TONGA & TANGA LOA & CHASE OWENS & BAD LUCK FALE VS. TOGI MAKABE & TOMOYUKI OKA & MANABU NAKANISHI & HIROYOSHI TENZAN

About what you’d expect.  This undercard hasn’t been good with the quiet crowd.  Owens was doinng the stuff where he thinks he’s a Tongan.  Oka looked good late working with Owens.  Owens pinned Oka after a package piledriver and told ref Massao Hattori to count to five like he was King Kong Bundy.  Bad Luck Fale told Kevin Kelly and Don Callis that he’s making them honorary Tongans.

MICHAEL ELGIN & TOA HENARE VS. MINORU SUZUKI & TAKASHI IIZUKA

Pretty basic match again.  It was okay, nothing more.  Taka Michinoku, Taichi, Desperado and Yoshinobu Kanemaru were interfering regularly.  Suzuki beat Henare with a choke, slaps and the kneebar submission.  After the match Elgin and Iizuka were brawling in the stands and all of Suzuki-gun were beating down Henare until Togi Makabe ran in with a chain and ran everyone off.  It’s clear that Suzuki ‘s first IC title defenes will be with Makabe.

CODY & MARTY SCURLL & HANGMAN PAGE VS.  KOTA  IBUSHI & KUSHIDA & DAVID FINLAY

This was the best thing so far.  Good match with Page pinning Kushida after Cody gave him crossroads and Page used the rites of passage.  This probably means something big for Page to get a win like this.  Tough crowd but they got into it and Ibushi is always great.  After the match Ibushi wanted to go after Cody but Finlay stopped him while Cody taunted him, so we’ve got more Cody vs. Ibushi coming up as well.  Cody said that the Young Bucks and Kenny Omega would defend the title successfully.  Cody started flexing and said he was drug free, while Marty said how Omega is the U.S. champion and he’s from Canad and he lives in the U.S. but he’s British.

SEIYA SANADA & EVIL & BUSHI & HIROMU TAKAHASHI & TETSUYA NAITO VS. YOSHI-HASHI &HIROOKI GOTO & WILL OSPREAY & KAZUCHIKA OKADA & GEDO

Good match.  Everyone squared up with their current foe, Goto with Evil, Okada with Sanada, Yoshi-Hashi with Naito and Ospreay with Takahashi.  Yoshi-Hashi was trying to be aggressive with Naito but people aren’t seeing him at that level.  Sanada beat Gedo with the skull end by submission.  Sanada cut a promo, bascially saying he’s going to say everything he needs to say in Osaka on 2/10.  Really just a normal match you’d see with these guys any night just at a bigger arena.

YOUNG BUCKS VS. SHO & YOH FOR IWGP JR. TAG TITLES

Excellent match. The story of the match is that Matt did a windsprint down the ramp and a flip dive wiping Sho & Yoh out, but Matt sold it like his back was out.  The rest of the match was Matt selling his back,  They had the doctor out at one point.  He took a backdrop over the top and his back landed on the apron.  He had a nasty bruise on his side.  Nick was on fire doing all kinds of great flying moves, knees and kicks.  The finish of the match saw Matt have the sharpshooter on Yoh.  But his back was out.  Yoh couldn’t make the ropes, Sho was taken out by Nick but Matt couldn’t hold the sharpshooter and Yoh pinned Matt with an inside cradle to regain the titles.

KENNY OMEGA VS. JAY WHITE FOR THE U.S. TITLE

Jay White won the title when he countered the One Winged Angel into the blade runner.  This was a 30:00 match and was very good, but really I can’t say White came through.  The people didn’t buy him at this level and when he won, it wasn’t like Juice Robinson’s win.  Adam Page came out to challenge White for the title.  Omega wanted a rematch.  Cody came out and told Omega you can’t take Page’s moment.  Marty Scrull came out as well.  Omega and Cody were arguing and Omega shoved. him.  Omega threw down Matt Jackson and acted like that was an accident.  Nick asked what was that all about.  Omega went to apologize but the Young Bucks walked out on Omega.  Marty Scurll walked out and told Cody and Omega to work it out.  Omga slapped hands with Page and Page left leaving Omga and Cody in the ring.  Cody said he was sorry he lost to Omega.  Cody and Omega slapped  hand.  Cody then opened the ropes for Omega, but when Omega went through the ropes, Cody laid out Omega with crossroads.  Cody started laughing.  Scurll was back in the ring and Scurll stared yellling at  Cody.  Cody took a chair from Kevin Kelly.  Ibushi made the save for Omega before Cody could hit him with the chair.  The crowd didn’t know what to make of all this until Ibushi saved Omega.  Ibushi offered his hand.  The crowd was chanting for Omega at this point.  Ibushi offered his hand but Omega turned it down.  Omega was in tears about the Bullet Club breaking up.  Then Omega and Ibushi embraced and the show ended.  The angle was a pretty major bit and it looks from here like Omega is being moved into the Funk Brothers role.

NJPW New Beginning in Sapporo night one results: Tanahashi-Suzuki

Though the shows are usually in February, New Japan Pro Wrestling’s New Beginning tour kicked off in Sapporo this morning. And though the tour is usually two shows, this year it’s three — with two consecutive nights in Sapporo and a February date in Osaka.

Night one was headlined by a match that was set up at New Year’s Dash, with Hiroshi Tanahashi defending his IWGP Intercontinental Championship against Minoru Suzuki, whose hair is growing back. On the undercard, Kenny Omega, The Young Bucks, Los Ingobernables de Japon, and Chaos were all in action in tag matches.

– Michael Elgin defeated Katsuya Kitamura

The show opened with the continuation of Kitamura’s challenge series. Elgin hit a powerbomb to beat him, and Kitamura is now 0-2 in the seven-match series after losing to Jay White in the first bout.

– KUSHIDA, Hiroyoshi Tenzan, Jushin Thunder Liger, Manabu Nakanishi & Tiger Mask IV defeated El Desperado, Taichi, Taka Michinoku, Takashi Iizuka & Yoshinobu Kanemaru

This ended when KUSHIDA used the Hoverboard Lock to tap out Michinoku.

– Tomohiro Ishii & Toru Yano defeated Chase Owens & Yujiro Takahashi

The Bullet Club Job Squad fell to Chaos when Ishii hit Owens with a vertical brainbuster.

– NEVER Openweight Six-Man Tag Team Champions Bad Luck Fale, Tama Tonga & Tanga Loa defeated Ryusuke Taguchi, Togi Makabe & Toa Henare to retain their titles

In the first title match on the card, the champions retained when Tonga made Henare tap with the Dream Catcher.

– Cody, Marty Scurll & Hangman Page defeated Kota Ibushi, David Finlay & Juice Robinson

Page hit the Rite of Passage (kneeling back-to-belly piledriver) on Finlay to win it. The story between Cody and Ibushi doesn’t seem to be over. Following the match, they exchanged words and Cody taunted Ibushi.

Cody told Kevin Kelly to be ready for plan D, D for Don. Kelly then asked Cody if there was trouble in paradise and if Cody and Kenny Omega are on the same page. Cody replied, “Kenny Omega is the leader of the Bullet Club. God bless America and god bless Kenny Omega. I love him.” So, there’s that — for now.

– Tetsuya Naito & Hiromu Takahashi defeated YOSHI-HASHI & Will Ospreay

Naito used a jackknife pin to get the fall on Ospreay. That came after Naito kicked Ospreay low and Takahashi connected with a superkick.

In a chaotic scene after the match which saw the guardrails falling down and young lions getting involved, YOSHI-HASHI attacked Naito, specifically going after his eyes. YOSHI-HASHI walked away, but Naito came back for more. Eventually, YOSHI-HASHI made his way to the back and Naito and Takahashi posed in the ring.

– Kazuchika Okada, Hirooki Goto & Gedo defeated SANADA, EVIL & BUSHI

BUSHI tapped out to Okada’s Cobra Clutch for the finish. After the match, Okada (still wearing those really ugly pants from Wrestle Kingdom) called out SANADA (who updated his already amazing mohawk to make it even more amazing) to get back into the ring, which SANADA did.

SANADA grabbed the mic and just threw it down and left. A now angry Okada went after him, put him into the ring post, hit a tombstone piledriver, stuffed Rainmaker bucks in his mouth, and slapped on the Cobra Clutch.

– Kenny Omega & The Young Bucks defeated Jay White, Sho & Yoh

The Bucks hit the Indytaker on Yoh to win it. The story here was what happened after the match, with White hitting the Blade Runner on Omega to send a message to him ahead of their IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship match at night two in Sapporo.

– Minoru Suzuki defeated Hiroshi Tanahashi to win the IWGP Intercontinental Championship

In a match that has gotten strong reviews, Suzuki won the title when the referee called for the stoppage with Tanahashi in a kneebar. The story with Tanahashi has been the fact that he’s been working with all sorts of injuries. Suzuki took advantage of that and captured the title for the first time, but Tanahashi never gave up and never tapped out.

Before the finish, Suzuki hit the Gotch piledriver but insisted on going for the submission.

NJPW reveals lineups for New Beginning in Sapporo & Osaka

With Wrestle Kingdom 12 and New Year’s Dash in the rearview mirror, New Japan Pro Wrestling has revealed the lineups for their next three major shows.

NJPW New Beginning in Sapporo fan feedback

Thumbs Up

  • Best Match: Okada vs. Suzuki
  • Worst Match: Yoshi Hashi vs. IIzuka

New Japan shows are always good, but this one felt kinda missable honestly until the LIJ match before intermission and the main event, but the main event was spectacular. Didn’t like how Suzuki gun lost a lot, but I trust New Japan to do something with it at this point.

Originally I was disappointed that they didn’t put all this on one show or the main event on the show that’s coming Saturday that should be amazing, but with the length of the main, I guess that makes sense. Okada was incredible as usual this match, and it’s funny because I compared how I rooted for Okada in this match to my sense of dread over Roman winning at the Rumble.

Okada gets the audience on his side the way that he sells, creates drama and suspense so that they want him to win, and everything matters and leads to something else. Reigns has been turned into a superhuman kick out machine to where it takes a tank to do anything to him. I just thought it was such an interesting thing the way NJPW built Okada and Suzuki in this match by having it done this way by these guys, making both of them into something important.

Thumbs down

Best Match: Goto/Juice
Worst:Yoshi-Hasi match

I spent my 60th birthday watching this show and thought it was a booking disaster. It brought back memories of that the WWE Nexus angle where they had great build up and then Wade Barrett lost and they were dead. I thought the main event was overlong and made me never want to see them wrestle again.

If Okada can beat him with a couple of rather mediocre looking Rainmakers after being destroyed for 35 minutes, what’s the point of a rematch? If that match had been the rematch after Suzuki hadn’t beaten him clean in a quick match, it might have been fine, but I think it killed the entire angle in one night. The junior tag match was also terrible.

Thumbs up

  • Best match: Okada vs Suzuki

The main event was outstanding. I would go 4.75. The little things in the match really made it special. The last 7-8 mins were fantastic and Okada always had the best finishing sequences. The more I think about it Okada is probably the best wrestler in the world rite now. He adapts to any style and his selling and facial expressions are top notch.

It’s good that Bryan brought up about kicking out of finishers on WOR. The way Okada was hitting the Rainmaker but was too hurt to get the pin was phenomenal. Its so much better than in WWE where they kick out of everything and make the finishers a joke. I love this match so much!  They took so little risk, they didn’t hit a bunch of high spots or do anything super dangerous and it was still awesome. So credit to both guys.

The crowd was pretty bad for most of the show, but they got them into it in the main event.

I thought Don Callis did a very good job overall. He had a few Matt Strikerisms where he put stuff over a little too much, but I wouldn’t say it was to the point he was hurting his credibility or insulting our intelligence.

Thumbs up

  • Best match: Okada vs. Suzuki (Consolation prize to the IWGP Heavyweight tag title match — most fun match of the night)
  • Worst match: Shibata, Liger & Tiger Mask vs. Gedo, Jado & Ospreay — just a nothing match to push a Shibata and Ospreay angle

Yoshi-Hashi vs. Iizuka played better with the Japanese commentary. I switched from English to Japanese halfway through when Kevin Kelly sounded like he was snoozing.

Fun and easy to watch card. A few throwaway matches that never over stayed their welcome. Main was fantastic, gripping and dirty. Suzuki didn’t lose, Okada survived. The junior tag just seemed off, while the heavyweight tag had great chemistry, and was fun (which made the pace and style of the main event more grueling and intense — just love the build and rhythm of these NJPW shows).

Thumbs in the Middle

  • Best Match: Kazuchika Okada vs. Minoru Suzuki
  • Worst Match: Yoshi-Hashi vs. Takashi Iizuka

That main event match was tremendous, with outstanding drama and great facial expressions by both guys. Suzuki is a one-of-a-kind, and while the dead weight in his faction is bad for New Japan, he and Okada had an epic battle.

But the rest of the show was just okay. I had a hard time getting into Juice vs. Goto, the junior tag title picture has been downgraded by Suzuki-gun’s return. And, despite that main event, I just can’t give this show a thumbs up.

Here’s hoping NJPW brings Suzuki over for the Long Beach shows. Would be a chance to bill them as his first-ever matches in the United States, presuming that is in fact true. It still bugs me that Ring of Honor p*ssed away a similar opportunity with Ishii last year — money left on the table, IMO.

I watched the first half in English, and Callis made me laugh when he suggested Kevin Kelly used to wear something similar to what Iizuka was wearing. I switched to Japanese at intermission and I’m glad I did, as Shinpei was on fire on the call in the main event.

It bugs me more than it should that Kevin Kelly calls an insufficient volume of moves for my liking. I realize he’s not Mauro, but for neither Kelly nor Callis to call the name of the move used for the win in that El Desperado undercard match was pathetic. Moments like that are where Steve Corino will be missed in color, or where Josh Barnett would have been really helpful to have.

I read your write-up on the main event. Agreed on the selling, that was so good, and I legit bought the possibility that Okada would tap, especially when he got pulled away from the ropes a
second time. That is part of the subtle genius of Gedo’s booking, having Suzuki-gun struggle on the undercard, making you think Suzuki might win to even it out.

  • Best match: Suzuki vs. Okada
  • Worst match: Iizuka vs. YOSHI-HASHI

SuzukiGun losing every title match was surprising but I was happy about it. I think the negative reactions show how many new people have started watching NJPW. SuzukiGun has done the “taking over” act many times in NJPW and they just got done doing it to death in NOAH. I don’t think many long time fans wanted them to do it again since we have seen plenty of bad Taichi matches, or Iizuka matches, or matches with ridiculous amounts of interference from them.

The newer fans haven’t been exposed to them at all if they came in during the last two years of major growth. Don’t think it buries them by any means either since the core, Japanese fanbase, as well as long term western fans, know the group’s history and SuzukiGun was established a long time ago. Thinking Killer Elite Squad takes the heavyweight titles in Osaka but I’m on the fence if Kanemaru/Desperado will in March. If they do, I could see KUSHIDA teaming with someone and going after the titles since KUSHIDA/SuzukiGun have beef from the 2016 Super J Cup.

Huge thumbs up

  • Best Match: Okada (c) vs. Suzuki
  • Worst Match: Tomohiro Ishii & Toru Yano (c) vs. KES vs. GBH

But sort of a weird night overall. Suzuki Gun feels like they’re being sent back to NOAH after getting shut down in every match against CHAOS when it looked like, at the start of the night, they were going to run wild all over the New Japan roster. The only push they have at all is from beating a Young Lion tagging with KUSHIDA.

NJPW New Beginning in Sapporo live results: Okada vs. Suzuki

Preview by Joseph Currier

New Japan Pro Wrestling returns tonight and into tomorrow morning with its biggest show since Wrestle Kingdom 11 as the New Beginning in Sapporo takes place at the Hokkaido Prefectural Sports Center.

The show will be headlined by Kazuchika Okada’s first IWGP Heavyweight Championship defense since retaining his title against Kenny Omega at the Tokyo Dome. Okada will face Minoru Suzuki, who returned along with Suzuki-gun on NJPW’s New Year’s Dash show to set up his match for the title.

Suzuki-gun will challenge for two other championships as well. Davey Boy Smith Jr. & Lance Archer will challenge IWGP Tag Team Champions Tomohiro Ishii & Toru Yano in a three-way match that also includes Togi Makabe & Tomoaki Honma. And Roppongi Vice will put their IWGP junior tag titles on the line against Suzuki-gun members Taka Michinoku & Taichi.

The rest of the card will feature mostly tag matches to build to the New Beginning in Osaka later this month, as well as a NEVER Openweight Championship match with Hirooki Goto defending against Juice Robinson.

Our coverage begins at 1 a.m. ET.

YOSHINOBU KANEMARU & DESPERADO VS. HIRAI KAWATO & KUSHIDA

About what you’d expect. Despeardo pinned Kawato with a spinning power bomb.  Kawato, who is 19, got on the show with the David Finlay injury.  Kushdia looked ral godo in one spot with an O’Connor role on Kanemaru and German suplex on Desperado at the same time.  Kawato’s timing was good.

Minoru Suzuki attacked Kazchika Okada at the press conference and put a kneebar on him.  They pushed that he’s coming into the match with an injured knee.

HIROYOSHI TENZAN & SATOSHI KOJIMA & YUJI NAGATA VS. HENARE & YOSHITATSU & TOMOYUKI OKA

The finish here was Nagata beaitng Oka with the crossface submission.  Nice finish as Oka broke the crossface on one side, but Nagata moved it to the other side.  Really good action with Nagata and Yoshitatsu with the stiff elbows and kicks was the highlight.  Solid match, about what you’d expect.

KATSUYORI SHIBATA & JUSHIN LIGER & TIGER MASK VS. GEDO & JADO & WILL OSPREAY

Not much to this match.  The focal point was just to get Ospreay over.  Ospreay used the spinning kick and Oscutter on Tiger Mask for the pin.  After the match Shibata went after Ospreay, but Ospreay came back and laid out  Shibata with the Oscutter to help build this coming Saturday’s match for the British title.  Ospreay didn’t do his spectacular stuff, and while the exchanges with Shibata and Ospreay were good, it was nothing like at Korakuen Hall.

YOSHI-HASHI VS. TAKASHI IIZUKA

At least it’s over.  Yoshi-Hashi pinned him after a twisting power bobm.  Iizuka did his act running through the crowd.  He had the advantage most of the way using chair shots, choking him with a rope and he finally used the Iron Fingers from hell but Yoshi-Hashi ducked and went to the finish.  I’m surprised they beat Iizuka on his first big show and didn’t built more of a mid-card program between the two.

HIROSHI TANAHASHI & MICHAEL ELGIN & MANABU NAKANISHI & RYUSUKE TAGUCHI & DRAGON LEE VS. TETSUYA NAITO & SEIYA SANADA & EVIL & BUSHI & HIROMU TAKAHASHI

No reaction to the new Tanahashi theme.  The crowd was quiet here which hurt the match a little.  It turned into a good match with the highlight being Lee vs. Takahashi.  Big win for the face team as Elgin power bombed Naito over the top rope onto Evil & Sanada.  Tanahashi then used the high fly flow to the floor on Evil & Sanada.  Lee pinned Bushi with a power bomb.  Lee and Takahashi put each aman’s title belt in the others’ face.  Taguchi put on a mask and he, Tanahashi & Elgin & Lee all posed with their various title belts.

ROCKY ROMERO & BARETTA VS. TAKA MICHINOKU & TAICHI FOR THE IWGP JR. TAG TEAM TITLES

This match was a mess.  Baretta pinned Taka with Strong Zero.  Afer the match, Kanemaru & Desperado challenged for the titles.  Most of the match was then beating on Baretta and it was like a five-on-two with Desperado & Kanemaru interfering as well as Taichi’s nymph girl who was constnatly distracting the referee.  The match didn’t have mudch heat even with all the heel tactics used.  It told a stroy but the crowd wasn’t much into it.  Romero was very good here and on paper, what Baretta did should have worked but crowd wasn’t buying Taichi’s stuff..

HIROOKI GOTO VS. JUICE ROBINSON FOR NEVER OPEN WEIGHT TITLE

Stiff physical match which Goto won using the GTR after kicking out of a draping GTR.  It turned into a good match because it was hurt early on because nobody bought that Robinson could win in the early part of the match.  Robinson ended up with a bloody nose.  He made a good showing in losing.

TOMOHIRO ISHII & TORU YANO VS. TOGI MAKABE & TOMOAKI HONMA VS. DAVEY BOY SMITH JR. & LANCE ARCHER FOR THE IWGP TAG TITLES

Yano & Ishii retained when Yano used a low blow and cradle on Makabe.  .  Archer and Smith then went crazy after the match beating everyon in sight.  The story is that Suzuki-gun continues to not win.  These teams are all rematched next week. Fast moving match.  Good match.

KAZUCHIKA OKADA VS. MINORU SUZUKI FOR IWGP HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE

This was an unreal match.  It was probably the best prolonged selling of any match in a decade or longer.  The first 30 minutes were Suzuki just destroying Okada’s knee.  He put him in all kinds of heel hooks and kneebars and even the figure four.  The story was that Okada would never submit.  The crowd was actually almost quiet becauase of how one-sided the match was.  The entire story was that it was clear Suzuki was winning but Okada kept never quitting.  They did a ref bump spot and then Taichi, Archer and Smith interfered.  Then Ishii and Yano ran them off.  They teased the Royce Gracie-Sakuraba finish as Gedo, in the role of Helio, was about to throw in the towel, but Okada told him not to.  Later, Okada was back getting his knee destroyed and they brought up how nobody was going to throw in the towel.  What is amazing was how this played off the Blaydes-Milstead fight earlier tonight.  The ref was about to stop the match but Okada made the ropes.  Okada and Suzuki then started trading slaps and twice Suzuki got Okada in the choke.  Okada actually teased a Gotch piledriver.  Suzuki did as well but Okada got out of it.  Finally after almost 40 minutes, Okada twice hit the rainmaker but coiuldn’t follow up on it because of knee damage but won with tjhe third rainmaker.  This was totally unlike any great match you’ll ever see.

No challenge because the New Japan Cup winner gets the next title shot.

They also announced there would be English commentary on the Korakuen Hall show on Tuesday.

Okada vs. Suzuki headlines NJPW’s New Beginning lineup

As expected after the match was set up in an angle on New Japan Pro Wrestling’s New Year’s Dash show last week, Minoru Suzuki will challenge Kazuchika Okada for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship at one of NJPW’s New Beginning pay-per-views next month.

Suzuki-gun returned to the promotion after two years away at New Year’s Dash, where Suzuki himself laid out Okada to close the show. The New Beginning cards are full of prominent matches for the stable, with Taichi & Taka Michinoku challenging for the junior tag titles and Davey Boy Smith Jr. & Lance Archer involved in two three-way matches for the IWGP tag titles.

Okada vs. Suzuki will headline the February 5th show in Sapporo before Tetsuya Naito defends his IWGP Intercontinental Championship against Michael Elgin in the main event of the New Beginning in Osaka on February 11th.

That show will also see Katsuyori Shibata defend his Revolution Pro Wrestling British Heavyweight Championship (as long as he’s still champion) against Will Ospreay, Hiromu Takahashi put his junior heavyweight title on the line against familiar rival Dragon Lee, and Los Ingobernables de Japon get a rematch for the NEVER six-man tag titles.

Both cards will be streamed live on NJPW World and feature an expected but notable absence, with Kenny Omega and the entire Bullet Club missing the New Beginning tour.
