Mercedes Martinez has won the Impact Knockouts Knockdown tournament.
The 20-year veteran earned a future Knockouts Championship match with her tournament victory on tonight’s Knockouts Knockdown special on Impact Plus.
Martinez defeated Brandi Lauren in the first round, Rachael Ellering in round two, then defeated former Knockouts Tag Team Champion Tasha Steelz in the finals of the eight-person tournament. Martinez pinned Steelz with a KO bomb.
Martinez debuted for the promotion on the October 7 edition of Impact TV in a trios match.
Prior to Impact, Martinez worked for both other major national promotions in the US. She was signed to WWE in January 2020, appearing both on NXT television and in the 2020 Women’s Royal Rumble match. Martinez had an abbreviated main roster stint as a member of the RETRIBUTION group, but ultimately returned to NXT before wrestling a single main roster match. She was released by WWE in August 2021.
Martinez also had an extremely short stint with AEW. She debuted in the company in August 2019, appearing as the joker in the Women’s Casino Battle Royale at the All Out pay-per-view. She would wrestle just once more for the promotion, teaming with the since-retired Sadie Gibs on the November 5, 2019 episode of Dark.
The first three entrants for Impact’s Knockouts Knockdown eight-woman tournament have been revealed.
Mercedes Martinez, 40, was announced as the first participant on Monday. Aside from an NWA-TNA appearance in 2003, Martinez has never appeared for Impact. She was recently released from WWE after nearly two years, mainly in NXT.
Two well known names on the indie scene — Lady Frost and Renee Michelle — were also announced.
Frost has done work for promotions like Beyond Wrestling and GCW in addition to the NWA while the 35-year-old Michelle has wrestled in AEW, Shine and Queens Of Combat.
Michelle also was a part of the inaugural Knockouts Tag Team Championship tournament where she teamed with Killer Kelly in a losing effort to Jordynne Grace and Jazz in the first round.
The tournament is part of the Knockouts Knockdown special: a one-night event set for Impact Plus on Saturday, October 9th. The winner will earn a future Knockouts title shot.
Impact has announced Knockouts Knockdown, an all-women event that will tape this coming weekend to air in October.
Gail Kim was joined by former Impact star Christy Hemme live on Impact’s Facebook page this afternoon. The show will air on October 9 on Impact Plus and will tape this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at Skyway Studios in Nashville, Tennessee. Kim announced that Deonna Purrazzo would be on the card, defending the Impact Knockouts title against a mystery opponent. Ticket information for the tapings can be found here.
Other names that Kim mentioned during the stream include Lady Frost, Renee Michelle, and Mercedes Martinez, all of whom will be appearing on the show. Additionally, a Monster’s Ball match will take place that will be dedicated to the memory of Daffney, who was the first woman to take part in a Monster’s Ball match against Taylor Wilde back in 2009.
NWA EmPower, which also had an all-women’s card, took place last month. Deonna Purrazzo successfully defended the Impact Knockouts title on the show, defeating Melina.
A match between Deonna Purrazzo and Mercedes Martinez has been announced for October.
WrestlePro has announced that Purrazzo will defend the Knockouts title against Martinez at their event in Rahway, New Jersey, on October 16. This would be the first post-WWE match announced for Martinez.
Martinez was released on August 6 along with 12 other members of the NXT roster. It has been reported that the cuts were a part of an effort to revamp NXT, focusing more on younger and bigger stars.
She was signed by WWE in 2020 and at one point was called up as a member of Retribution. However, she requested and later was granted a return to NXT. She had most recently been feuding with Xia Li, with her last match being a mixed tag match in June. She teamed with Jake Atlas (who was also released) to face Boa and Xia Li. Martinez suffered an injury during the match that she was recovering from prior to her release.

Riddle spoke to SportsKeeda regarding a recent interaction with Goldberg. “Bill Goldberg is extremely entertaining, I can’t take anything away from that but I’ll tell you this, I saw Bill the other day before he challenged Bobby Lashley and he was walking to the Gorilla Position and I was standing there and I was with Damian Priest at the time and he says hi to everybody and then Goldberg comes up to me gives me a look. He was making a face and then he goes, ‘Hey, congratulations kid….’ and I was like, ‘Oh man, Goldberg is kind of nice’, so I gave him a little handshake and he went out and challenged Bobby and then he was coming out, through Gorilla again and I was like, ‘Hey Goldberg, good stuff’ and as he gave me a fist bump he says, ‘I only need two moves’ so I was like, ‘Oh man, the guy’s still got it’”.

I stayed dedicated, hustled, grinded, and sacrificed more than I could ever imagined to reach that goal. It took 20yrs…..but I wouldn’t change anything bc the universe has a way of making things work out. I never fit the mold ANYWHERE but I stayed TRUE to myself, ALWAYS. “The diamond in the rough” so to say….I truly want to thank @tripleh @wwe and @WWENXT for giving me the opportunity of a lifetime. I understand this business is never a guarantee for anything, and that sometimes the risk is higher than the reward. I’m grateful, blessed and humbled. Thank you to all that have text, messaged, emailed, called, and to those that put me on blast on social media..lol. The overwhelming love does not go unnoticed. But…….DONT COUNT ME OUT! The BEST of me is still yet to be unseen. I’m rebuilding myself and I know my worth, always have. My drive, dedication, perseverance and my hard knocks stubbornness says I have more to prove. Following a Xia Li roundhouse kick on Tuesday’s NXT, Mercedes Martinez was taken to the hospital for evaluation after the kick appeared to knock her out.
Mercedes and Jake Atlas were taking on Li and Boa in a tag team match. After taking a Li suplex, Martinez stood up and took the kick that connected flush with her jaw and ear. Martinez immediately dropped face-first and when Li went for the cover, Martinez’s shoulders were up off the mat and her right arm came up slowly and awkwardly to avoid the pin — reminiscent of when MMA fighters take similar damage.
Li then stood up and backed away as the referee checked Martinez off camera, calling the match off seconds later. Martinez’s mouth was also bloodied.
Fightful first reported that the 40-year-old was checked out backstage and that both talent and staff were told she was going to be evaluated at a hospital. As of Wednesday morning, there is no update as to her condition.
Eva Marie is set to make her return to WWE Raw next week.
A new vignette aired during tonight’s Monday Night Raw featuring Eva Marie. At the end of the vignette, it was revealed that she would make her return next week.
Dave Meltzer has confirmed a WrestleVotes report from earlier today reporting that when Eva Marie returns, she will be accompanied by someone in a bodyguard-type ‘muscle’ role. Names mentioned include Piper Niven of NXT UK and Mercedes Martinez, who appears regularly on NXT television and is currently feuding with Tian Sha. However, Meltzer notes it is unclear who will eventually be in the role.
After leaving the WWE for three years, Eva Marie re-signed with the company last October. Vignettes started to air last month showing Eva Marie as someone who wants to help other people, promoting the “Eva-Loution”. Marie previously was a part of WWE from 2013 through 2017, when she began persuing other interests outside of WWE.
The card for NXT’s next TakeOver event now has four confirmed matches.
WWE has announced that Mercedes Martinez will face Xia Li at NXT TakeOver: In Your House. The show is taking place on Sunday, June 13.
After Martinez defeated Zayda Ramier on last week’s NXT, there was an angle where the lights went out and smoke began to fill the ring. A black mark from Li’s Tian Sha faction then appeared on the video screen. The lights went out again — and the mark was on Martinez’s hand when they came back on.
In a promo that aired on NXT tonight, Li said she’ll never forget how Martinez tried to embarrass her when they faced off in the 2017 Mae Young Classic. Martinez defeated Li in the first round of that tournament. The bout was Li’s first-ever pro wrestling match.
Li said during her promo tonight that she feels sick whenever she rewatches that Mae Young Classic match. Li claimed that Martinez tried to bring shame to Li’s name and disgrace to her family. Li said she’s a true warrior now and has been waiting for this moment for four years. Li said Martinez is standing in the way of her destiny. Li vowed that she’s going to purge Martinez at TakeOver: In Your House.
Martinez responded to Li later on tonight’s show. Martinez said Li may be more badass and dangerous now than she was in 2017 — but so is Martinez. Martinez said Li is standing in the way of Martinez’s way back to the NXT Women’s Championship. Martinez said she’ll run through Li at TakeOver.
Martinez unsuccessfully challenged for Raquel Gonzalez’s NXT Women’s Championship on an episode of NXT last month.

Wade Barrett on commentary noted Ruff was not medically cleared, but Vic Jospeh claimed Regal could not stop Ruff from answering an open challenge. What? So, Ruff is not cleared to wrestle, but he can wrestle in an open challenge. Whatever.

O’Reilly pinned Lorcan in a fun match while it lasted. This match was set up after an angle earlier in the day involving a fight in the parking lot. Bobby Fish made a surprise return to make a save after the match.
Great grappling in the early moments. The grappling soon gave way to strikes. Dunne at ringside distracted O’Reilly, which allowed Lorcan to hit O’Reilly with a sneak attack. The show went to a commercial break with O’Reilly down selling the sneak attack.
O’Reilly after the break soon made a comeback, and dropped Lorcan with a brainbuster. O’Reilly finished the match with a Bobby Eaton flying knee drop, and O’Reilly covered Lorcan for a pinfall.
Bobby Fish returned to NXT while making a save after the match. Lorcan and Dunne attacked O’Reilly after the bell. Fish ran down to even the odds. The former tag partners reunited to clean house one more time.

WWE
In an interview with The Big Issue, Drew McIntyre continued to push the idea of a match between him and Tyson Fury. “When I’m able to win back my WWE title we’ll fly back home, get an open top bus at the top of Scotland. I’m going to make my way down Scotland, [and have a] big celebration all the way down into England. Get to Fury’s house, set ourselves up a little match. It’s going to happen. The thing is he has a genuine love for wrestling and he’s such an entertainer, he gets it.I know we could do some fun business together. Probably some kind of Battle of Britain would be the theme.”
Mercedes Martinez spoke to Daily DDT about her choice not remaining with the RETRIBUTION stable. “Do I regret the decision [to leave RETRIBUTION]? No, I do not,” she said. “I always have to put forth what’s great for me in my career now. I can’t look in the future, I don’t know what can happen in the future, but I have to take the opportunity and what’s best for Mercedes Martinez’s career at this moment. With RETRIBUTION, I took the opportunity, but it wasn’t the right opportunity. It didn’t feel right in my heart to be there. With the crew there and with the RETRIBUTION members, I want nothing but the best for them and they’re young enough to do what they got to do and take the opportunity and kill it.”
Jeff Jarrett on Sportskeeda talked about the Mickie James shipping incident from last week, saying “Obviously I’ve known Mickie her entire career. Incredible talent. You know, that story broke and without knowing all the details, it took in my opinion… how the bag got there. I completely understand it,But without… look, there’s a lot of things that aren’t always what they truly appear to be,” Jarrett added. I don’t know who shipped it, how it was shipped, what was in that bag, what was in the contents of that bag. There’s so many questions, what if? But I know one thing it made great headlines last week and a lot of discussion. But at the end of the day I don’t think either side… Mickie’s a future Hall of Famer without question. But it was a unique situation, difficult for both sides but I think it’s water under the bridge at this point.”

TUESDAY NEWS UPDATE
WWE
A match between Mercedes Martinez and Jessi Kamea has been added to tonight’s episode of NXT.
It was announced Monday afternoon that a new podcast featuring Jeff Jarrett called “My World with Jeff Jarrett” will launch on May 4. Conrad Thompson will host the show and will be available on adfreeshows.com.
WWE.com posted an article on Matt and Jeff Hardy’s father, Gilbert, passing away on April 6.
The website also posted an article on Kelly Kelly (Barbara Blank) marrying Joe Coba this past weekend.
Belair also spoke to TMZ Sports on winning the title. “It’s so important,” she told them. “I always say representation is not a request. Representation is a requirement and WWE is a perfect example of how people should follow by propelling women and representing women and treating women in sports and in the world. It’s an amazing moment to stand in the ring with Sasha Banks — it was the first time two African-American women have had a title match at ‘WrestleMania’ and [it was the] main event.”
The Advertiser has an article on Rhea Ripley winning the Raw Women’s Championship at WrestleMania.
Rhea commented on her title win in an interview with TVInsider, bringing up one congratulatory message after winning the title: “One of the big ones was talking to Vince McMahon afterward, hearing him say “well done” and that I did great. It was so surreal. It’s a dream, and I’m living it. To have the big bossman say well done was pretty insane to me.”
SVG has an article on WWE welcoming fans back at WrestleMania. “The fans’ being there had a huge impact on everyone — from the talent to everybody in the truck,” SVP of event technical operations Duncan Leslie told SVG. “It was so gratifying to see how excited our fans were, because we do everything we can to give them the best show on earth.”
In an interview with TMZ Sports, The Miz praised Bad Bunny’s performance at WrestleMania. “Not only did he earn my respect, I think he earned the WWE Universe’s respect,” he said. “I think he earned backstage’s respect. I think he earned everybody’s respect in what some are calling ‘The Best Celebrity Match at WrestleMania in History!'”
The company has trademarked the term “Then Now Forever Together”, a new phrase seen in their new signature opening.
Other Wrestling
CM Punk didn’t dismiss the idea of returning to wrestling in an interview with Uproxx, but also said that it wasn’t his world anymore. “I think the right combination could maybe be figured out, but it’s also not for me to figure out,” he said. “It’s not my world anymore. I’m certainly not Hulk Hogan, where I’m going to show up somewhere and like, ‘no, this is how it’s going to be.’ The wrestling world doesn’t necessarily need CM Punk and that’s absolutely fine. Everyone seems to be doing great. I don’t know, it’s like flavors of ice cream. I walk into an ice cream shop one time and I’m like, ‘Oh, that seems like a good flavor. Give me two scoops of that.’ It’s just gotta be the right time, right place, right situation.”
NWA PowerrrSurge, a new show that will air on FiteTV starting tonight, will feature Mike Parrow and a spotlight match with Jerimiah Plunkett vs. Mims. This will be part of the NWA subscription package on Fite TV.
WWE has announced a change to tonight’s NXT Women’s Tag Team title match.
NXT Women’s Tag Team Champions Shotzi Blackheart & Ember Moon will now defend their titles against Aliyah & Mercedes Martinez on tonight’s show. It was originally announced that Blackheart & Moon would be facing The Robert Stone Brand’s Aliyah & Jessi Kamea.
In a video that WWE uploaded this afternoon, Robert Stone said Kamea was injured while training for tonight’s match. Stone and Aliyah approached Martinez and offered her the “life-changing opportunity” to challenge for the NXT Women’s Tag Team titles with Aliyah tonight. When Martinez saw how much money Stone was offering her, she told Stone that would only be half of her pay. Martinez said she expects to be paid the other half after tonight’s match. When Martinez left, Stone said he doesn’t have any more money.
Martinez was formerly part of The Robert Stone Brand prior to her call-up to the main roster last year. She was written out of the group by being served with a restraining order from Stone after losing a steel cage match to Rhea Ripley last September. After briefly being part of RETRIBUTION on the main roster, Martinez returned to NXT in December.
This will be Blackheart & Moon’s first NXT Women’s Tag Team title defense. The titles were introduced two weeks ago and awarded to women’s Dusty Classic winners Raquel Gonzalez & Dakota Kai, but Gonzalez & Kai lost the titles to Blackheart & Moon that same night.
The Robert Stone Brand had interrupted an interview with Blackheart & Moon on last week’s NXT and challenged them to a Women’s Tag Team title match.
Here’s the updated lineup for tonight’s NXT:
NXT Women’s Tag Team Champions Shotzi Blackheart & Ember Moon defend against Aliyah & Jessi Kamea
NXT Women’s Champion Io Shirai & Zoey Stark vs. Raquel Gonzalez & Dakota Kai
Karrion Kross vs. Oney Lorcan
NXT Cruiserweight Champion Jordan Devlin vs. Kushida in a non-title match
NXT United Kingdom Champion WALTER vs. Drake Maverick in a non-title match
Bronson Reed vs. LA Knight
NXT general manager William Regal will address Adam Cole and Kyle O’Reilly
Regal will also give an update on the situation with the vacant NXT Tag Team titles
The NXT Women’s Championship will officially be on the line in a triple threat match at February’s TakeOver event.
WWE has announced that NXT Women’s Champion Io Shirai will defend her title against Toni Storm and Mercedes Martinez in a triple threat match at NXT TakeOver on Sunday, February 14.
Shirai, Storm, and Martinez took part in a three-way brawl on this week’s episode of NXT. It ended with Storm standing tall and holding up Shirai’s NXT Women’s Championship belt.
Martinez made her return to NXT last month by attacking Shirai. Shirai had been challenged by Storm and went to the ring to call her out, but Martinez blindsided Shirai and ended up throwing her into the announce table.
Storm & Martinez teamed together in the women’s Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic but were eliminated by Kacy Catanzaro & Kayden Carter in the first round after Shirai attacked Martinez during the match. It was said on NXT this week that the finals of the women’s Dusty Classic will take place at TakeOver.
Shirai has been NXT Women’s Champion since defeating Charlotte Flair and Rhea Ripley in a triple threat match for the title at NXT TakeOver: In Your House in June of last year.
For the first time since departing RETRIBUTION, Mercedes Martinez returned to WWE television tonight.
Martinez made her return to NXT by attacking NXT Women’s Champion Io Shirai tonight. After being challenged by Toni Storm on tonight’s NXT, Shirai went to the ring and called Storm out. Shirai sat in a steel chair waiting for Storm to come down to the ring. But Martinez then attacked Shirai from behind.
Martinez threw Shirai around ringside. Shirai tried to fight back, but Martinez tackled Shirai into the apron and threw her against the announce table.
Along with T-Bar (Dominik Dijakovic), Mace (Dio Maddin), Reckoning (Mia YIm), and Slapjack (Shane Thorne), Martinez was originally one of the core members of RETRIBUTION on the main roster. Her RETRIBUTION name was Retaliation. It was confirmed this October that Martinez was no longer part of the group and would be returning to NXT.
Martinez had been written off NXT TV in September. After losing a steel cage match to Rhea Ripley, WWE uploaded video of a post-show angle where Martinez was presented with a restraining order from Robert Stone. Martinez had been part of the Robert Stone Brand with Stone and Aliyah.
