WWE NXT live results: TakeOver build continues

The build to TakeOver XXX continues with another qualifying match on tonight’s NXT.

Kushida, Cameron Grimes, and an opponent who has yet to be announced will face off in a triple threat qualifying match. The winner will become the third wrestler confirmed for the ladder match for the vacant North American Championship at TakeOver, joining Bronson Reed and Damian Priest.

Reed and Priest are facing off in a singles match tonight.

Dexter Lumis previously qualified for the ladder match but has been removed due to injury. Next week, there will be two matches between the wrestlers who didn’t lose the falls in their triple threat qualifying matches. The winners will be the final two wrestlers to qualify for TakeOver.

Two weeks ago, William Regal told NXT Champion Keith Lee and Karrion Kross that he wouldn’t be bullied into making title matches. Kross then sent a message to Regal last week, causing destruction backstage that included laying out Danny Burch. Kross vs. Burch will kick off tonight’s show.

Plus, Cruiserweight Champion Santos Escobar faces Tyler Breeze in a non-title match. There will also be a segment where Johnny Gargano and Candice LeRae invite the NXT Universe into their home again.

**********

Karrion Kross (with Scarlett) defeated Danny Burch

Kross looked strong in submitting Burch.

Burch wasted no time in attacking Burch at the bell. He rocked Kross with a dropkick at the start, and continued with a flurry of offense. Burch clotheslined Kross out of the ring, but that proved to be a turning point. Kross grabbed Burch by the throat and slammed him on the floor. Kross tossed around Burch for a few moments.

Burch with a hope spot briefly fired up, but Kross looked to snuff it out. Burch was able to counter Kross, and he applied a crossface. Kross powered out to execute a Doomsday Saito. Kross applied his Kross Jacket sleeper, and Burch passed out.

NXT Champion Keith Lee marched to the ring after the match to confront Kross & Scarlett. He had a folder in his hand with a contract. Lee responded to Kross blaming Lee for them not yet being booked in a title match. Lee said he offered Kross an opportunity to earn a title shot. Lee called Kross a “bitch”. Lee went on to say he promised William Regal he would not touch Kross until TakeOver if they sign the contract. Kross signed the contract, Scarlett sealed it with a kiss of death, and she passed the contract back to Lee.

Lee picked up the contract, and opened the folder. The contract erupted in flames. A fireball went off as Lee opened it, burning him. Lee sold it big as officials and trainers poured into the ring to help him.

The match looks offical for TakeOver with Kross challenging Lee for the NXT Championship, but Lee also did an injury angle. The plot thickens.

The show went to a split screen showing Lee backstage being taken to a waiting ambulance. The split screen continued through the entrances of the next match.

Drake Maverick vs. Killian Dain ended in a no contest

Undisputed Era stormed the ring and attacked both, and the match was thrown out.

The show cut to full screen just as the match began — only to go back to a picture-in-picture for a commercial break. In the meantime, Maverick and Dain were telling a David vs. Goliath story. Meanwhile, Lee was leaving the building in an ambulance. As Lee was driven away, Undisputed Ere were seen arriving to the building in a SUV.

The match was still going on when Undisputed Era rushed into the ring to attack both Maverick and Dain. The referee called for the bell as Undisputed Era ganged up on Maverick and Dane. Cole laid Dain out with a Last Shot, and then Cole grabbed a microphone.

Cole cut a great promo on Pat McAfee. Cole dared McAfee to show up next week to confront him in the ring face to face.

A vignette hyped the return of Kushida later in the show for the triple threat qualifying match.

NXT Cruiserweight Champion Santos Escobar defeated Tyler Breeze in a non-title match

Escobar pinned Breeze thanks to a distraction by his henchmen.

Escobar dominated at the outset as he pummeled Breeze. An enzuigiri created some separation for Breeze, but Escobar countered Breeze to lay him out on the floor before a commercial break.

Breeze made a comeback after the commercial break. Breeze hit a superkick and went for a cover. As he did so, Raul Mendoza and Joaquin Wilde ran down to ringside looking to interfere. Breeze knocked them both off the apron, but the distraction allowed Escobar to catch Breeze for the Phantom Driver. Escobar then covered him for the pinfall.

Fandango came down to the ring after the match. One arm was in the swing and the other was holding a stick. El Legado del Fantasma jumped him, and they began a beatdown. Isaiah “Swerve” Scott ran in to make a save. He cleaned house on the heel faction, and Swerve cleared the ring. This looks to set up a trios match, possibly for TakeOver.

A vignette profiled Dakota Kai ahead of her challenging Io Shirai for the NXT Women’s Championship

Mia Yim defeated Indi Hartwell

Yim was interviewed on her way to the ring about the condition of Lee. She said Lee suffered no serious damage, but Yim also said she had to focus on her match. Yim was not her normal self as she looked concerned about Lee even as the match began.

Hartwell was able to gain the advantage at one point, and she began to mock Lee. That angered Yim, and she fired up on her. Hartwell countered with a sidewalk slam for a two count. Yim escaped a sleeper with a jawbreaker. Yim would escape a second time, but Hartwell still got another near fall.

Hartwell taunted Yim, and Yim fired up again into a comeback. Yim was able to transition into a submission hold, Hartwell tapped out.

Finn Balor in a sit-down promo vowed to win the North American Championship in the ladder match at TakeOver.

Pat McAfee in a tweet confirmed he would be on the show next week to confront Adam Cole.

Bronson Reed defeated Damian Priest

This was a hoss fight and a slobberknocker. They fought through a commercial break. Priest sandwiched Reed into the ring steps. He was working over Reed as the show returned from commercial. Reed soon made a comeback and got a near fall.

The fought on, and Priest lifted Reed for a Broken Arrow (Falcon Arrow). Reed kicked out and gave Priest a suplex of his own. A double down led into the finish. Reed went for a splash off the top rope. He mostly missed, but had an ugly landing. Reed went for a cradle and covered Priest for a three count. That kind of came out of nowhere.

A vignette highlighted NXT Women’s Champion Io Shirai. She cut a good promo on Dakota Kai.

Another vignette had Cameron Grimes cutting a promo ahead of his upcoming match later on tonight. He is so great as a heel.

Mercedes Martinez & Aliyah (with Robert Stone) defeated Kacy Catanzaro & Kayden Carter

Martinez pinned Catanzaro to win the match.

Stone before the match tried to recruit Catanzaro. Instead of joing his stable, she kicked him in the shin. Catanzaro & Carter looked good as a tean with tandem offense and similar looking gear. The match went through a commercial break. The heels were working over Carter as the show returned from the break.

Aliyah & Martinez cut the ring in half for awhile. Catanzaro ran wild off a hot tag, and she got a near fall on Martinez. She was soon cut off, and Martinez delivered the Air Raid Crash to score the pinfall.

Rhea Ripley after the match came out to has a staredown with Martinez. Aliyah cleared out so Ripley and Martinez could go one-on-one. Ripley rushed into the ring to brawl with Martinez. Ripley was getting the better of Martinez when Aliyah jumped in to double team Ripley. Shotzi Blackheart ran in to make a save. The heels fled. This appears to set up a tag team match.

Next up was a return to the Gargano household for another promo from the heel couple. Candice LeRae was reading a fairytale to her dog. She turned it into a promo on Tegan Nox. Gargano was on a ladder changing a lightbulb. On the ladder he talked about winning the qualifying singles match next week against Ridge Holland. He fixed the lightbuld and then said his winning the ladder match at TakeOver would fix NXT. Gargano turned out the lights, but not before saying goodnight to a picture on the wall of Dok Hendrix (Michael Hayes).

Back to school for another clinic in Thatch-as-Thatch can wrestling with Timothy Thatcher. He of course stretched someone with a submission hold.

Cameron Grimes defeated Kushidav and Velveteen Dream in a triple threat qualifying match

Grimes pinned Kushida, and now Grimes advances to the North American Championship ladder match at TakeOver. Dream did not drop the fall so he goes on to face Finn Balor in a qualifying singles match next week.

The mystery opponent was Dream returning to NXT television. He turned heel after the match when he attacked Kushida.

The opening portion of the match was a melee involving all three. Grimes was dispatched after taking a crazy bump on an arm ringer from Kushida. That left Kushida to square off with Dream. A flying ax handle netted Dream a two count. An Oklahoma roll got him another two. He was sent outside as Kushida and Grimes squared off.

Kushida flew out of the ring to give Dream a tornado DDT on the floor. Grimes a moment later tripped him up on the turnnbuckles before a picture-in-picture commercial break. Grimes worked over Kushida during the break. Dream rushed in to roll-up Grimes for two. Dream was again sent out of the ring.

Kushida fired up on both opponents after the commercial break. Everybody was knocked off their feet for a triple down. Dream fired up with a flurry. He gave Kushdia the Dream Valley Driver, but Grimes threw him out of the ring before he could cover Kushida.

Kushida leapt off the top turnbuckle for a flip dive on to Dream. Kushida and Grimes did the Spanish Fly spot where Kushida transitioned into an armbar upon impact. Dream broke up the hold, and Kushida caught him in the Hoverboard Lock. Dream escaped to lift Kushida in a fireman’s carry. Kushida countered into an armbar.

While Kushida was still applying the submission hold, Grimes rushed in to give him a Cave In. Grimes then covered Kushida to score the pinfall.

Dream went heel after the match as he attacked Kushdia. He beat him down and then posed as the show was closing. Balor entered the ring to confront Dream as the show went off the air.

WWE has revealed two of the participants who will be taking part in next week’s TakeOver XXX qualifying match.

It was announced on this morning’s episode of WWE’s The Bump that Kushida, Cameron Grimes, and an opponent who has yet to be named will face off in a triple threat match on NXT next Wednesday (August 12). Cruiserweight tiebreaker match announced for NXT next week

With a three-way tie in Group A, a triple threat match on next week’s NXT will decide who advances to the interim Cruiserweight Championship tournament finals.

WWE has announced that Kushida, Drake Maverick, and Jake Atlas will face off in a triple threat match on NXT next Wednesday. The winner will advance to face El Hijo del Fantasma in the finals of the tournament.

Maverick defeated Kushida in their Group A match on tonight’s NXT. Kushida focused on Maverick’s arm throughout, but the finish was him going for an armbar and Maverick reversing it into a pin. Atlas watched the match from ringside and rooted for Maverick.

If Kushida won, he would have advanced to the finals. With Maverick winning, Kushida, Maverick, and Atlas all have 2-1 records. Kushida’s wins were against Atlas and Tony Nese, Maverick’s wins were against Kushida and Nese, and Atlas’ wins were against Maverick and Nese.

Maverick’s story for the tournament has focused on him trying to save his job after being released from WWE.

El Hijo del Fantasma defeated Akira Tozawa on NXT tonight to advance to the tournament finals from Group B. WWE hasn’t announced when the finals will be taking place.

Jordan Devlin is the NXT Cruiserweight Champion but is currently unable to travel and defend his title due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Matt Riddle and Timothy Thatcher will also face off in a cage fight on next week’s NXT.

Three interim Cruiserweight title tournament matches set for NXT

Three interim Cruiserweight Championship tournament matches are taking place on NXT next Wednesday.

WWE has announced that Kushida vs. Tony Nese, Drake Maverick vs. Jake Atlas, and El Hijo del Fantasma vs. Jack Gallagher are set for next week’s episode of NXT. Kushida vs. Nese and Maverick vs. Atlas are Group A tournament matches, while Fantasma vs. Gallagher is a Group B match.

In an emotional video he posted earlier, Maverick said he’ll still be in the interim title tournament despite being released by WWE today.

This will be the first time Fantasma has wrestled on NXT television. A video hyping his debut aired tonight.

The tournament kicked off with Akira Tozawa defeating Isaiah “Swerve” Scott in a Group B match on tonight’s NXT.

Everyone in the tournament will face the other wrestlers in their group one time. The wrestler with the best record in Group A will then face the wrestler with the best record in Group B in the finals.

Any ties will be broken by head-to-head record.

Jordan Devlin is the NXT Cruiserweight Champion but is currently unable to travel and defend his title due to the coronavirus pandemic.

WWE 205 Live results: Kushida vs. Danny Burch

By Chick Fritts

Kushida defeated Danny Burch

The opening moments of 205 Live’s opening matchup in an empty WWE Performance Center began with chain grappling. Kushida and Danny Burch traded control of individual limbs. Burch would have a hold of a leg and Kushida would get an arm. Burch gained the arm and Kushida tried the leg. This back and forth went on for some time and saw a variety of holds used by each man.

The opening limb targeting came to an end after Burch changed the pace with a flapjack. Burch failed to follow up due to Kushida kicking him after being provided with a brief breather. Burch rolled to the outside and Kushida looked for a dive. Seeing Kushida in a running motion Burch hopped to the apron and was swiftly met with the heels of his inverted opponent.

Kushida failed significant advances after this point as a top rope forearm attempt was caught with a right hand from Burch, who then proceeded to grind down his already grounded adversary. He did this with effective striking and grounded holds.

An Irish whip from Burch allowed Kushida to launch a counter-attack that started with a handspring back elbow. Burch attempted to gain his bearings on the outside of the ring, but Kushida gave him no such break. Kushida instead jumped from the apron onto Burch before sending him back to the ring. Kushida continued his attack with a kick to the head.

Burch stuffed what looked to be a DDT attempt from Kushida and connected with a loud forearm smash. Burch went for a pin but Kushida kicked out only to be seamlessly transitioned into a crossface in the center of the ring. Kushida managed to fight through and land a light strike to Burch which initiated a brief exchange of blows that saw Kushida regain match advantage. Kushida wasted no time as he positioned himself for and succeeded in applying the hoverboard lock. Burch immediately tapped out.

In their first time meeting, Burch and Kushida put on a fairly typical WWE cruiserweight match. The lack of audience definitely did not help it was not a great hindrance either. While the match was nothing to write home about it was far from bad, it worked fine as an opening contest.

Jack Gallagher defeated Tyler Breeze

In his first singles appearance following his return to 205 Live, Jack Gallagher dawned a cloak that covered his new tattoos. He let it fall to the mat in a theatrical display. This definitely seemed best fitted for a live audience, the all at once re-reveal to remind the world of his new appearance and maybe score a gasp or two at the same time, but still came across well enough without a crowd.

The opening moments of the match saw Gallagher and Tyler Breeze enter a collar and elbow tie-up which saw Breeze gaining the advantage in the first leg of the match. Breeze seemed to have an answer for Gallagher’s questions.

Gallagher turned the match in his favor when Breeze slipped and gave control of his head to his opponent. Gallagher took this head control and turned it into a fireman’s carry drop onto the top rope. Powerful strikes from Gallagher followed. A struggling Breeze tried for an opening, but Gallagher did not give an inch, instead continuing the barrage of strikes.

Gallagher completely controlled the pace of the match for a long while. Breeze tried again to regain a semblance of a chance with some strikes to the gut. Gallagher was sent back into the corner and Breeze connected with a match altering kick. Breeze then landed two flying forearms to a cornered Gallagher and seemed to be in the driver’s seat. When Breeze was going for a third flying forearm, Gallagher entered a sprint and missed a dropkick.

Breeze rolled him up and Gallagher kicked out and before he had a chance to breathe Gallagher was laid out with a supermodel kick. Breeze went for a pin only for Gallagher to answer the referee’s count.

A now desperate Breeze looked for a way to close the match. He climbed to the top rope but was brought down by Gallagher who had quickly recovered from Breeze’s attempted finish. Gallagher turned his attention to the arm of Breeze with an armbar in the center of the ring. Breeze dug down deep and crawled to the bottom rope.

Gallagher. in a position similar to Breeze from moments earlier, was growing frustrated. He stuck and struck only for Breeze to not only answer his strikes but also regain control of the match. The two found themselves on the outside of the ring wherein Breeze drove Gallagher into the barricade before returning him to the squared circle. Breeze struggled to reenter the ring as his arm was damaged from Gallagher’s armbar. This momentary pause gave Gallagher enough time to connect with a discus lariat and secure the pinfall victory.

Both men looked strong in a very fun and logical match. Not a moment was a lull or without reason. In the end, Gallagher came across looking beastly and as a legitimate threat to Jordan Devlin’s cruiserweight title reign.

205 Live this week was solid. The opening match wasn’t fantastic but the main event was a great display of cruiserweight wrestling. Breeze and Gallagher managed to pull off a very good match.

Kushida set for action on WWE 205 Live this week

Kushida will be in action on this week’s episode of 205 Live.

WWE has announced that Kushida vs. Danny Burch will air on 205 Live tomorrow night. Jack Gallagher vs. Tyler Breeze is also set for the episode.

Three weeks ago, Kushida was part of the Team NXT vs. 205 Live originals 10-man elimination tag match on 205 Live. He was revealed as the final member of Team NXT on that show, replacing Lio Rush. Team NXT won the match after dissension between Gallagher and his teammates. Kushida and Isaiah “Swerve” Scott were the two members of Team NXT left standing at the end.

Kushida defeated Joaquin Wilde on the episode of NXT that aired last night.

Tomorrow’s 205 Live will be the third time Kushida has wrestled on the show. He teamed with Gallagher to defeat Akira Tozawa & Brian Kendrick when 205 Live took place at Madison Square Garden in September.

WWE NXT live results: TakeOver Portland go-home show

NXT’s final stop on the road to TakeOver: Portland takes place tonight.

Before defending his title against Tommaso Ciampa on Sunday, NXT Champion Adam Cole will face off with Kushida in a non-title match tonight. Kushida was attacked by the Undisputed Era last week while they were looking for Ciampa.

Dakota Kai will also be in action ahead of her street fight against Tegan Nox at TakeOver. Kai will face Candice LeRae on NXT tonight.

The first challenger for Jordan Devlin’s NXT Cruiserweight Championship will be determined when Lio Rush takes on Angel Garza in a number one contender’s match tonight. WWE hasn’t confirmed when the winner will be getting their title shot.

WWE will follow up on Velveteen Dream making his return and saving Ciampa from Undisputed Era last week. Plus, Johnny Gargano vs. Cameron Grimes is also set after an angle where they got into a confrontation at a house show over the weekend.

**********

A promo package for Takeover this weekend aired at the top of the show, including clips from last week’s episode featuring the Charlotte Flair’s appearance and the return of Velveteen Dream.

Roderick Strong came to the ring and cut an angry promo geared at Velveteen Dream. He demanded an apology from Dream for putting airbrushed pictures of Strong’s wife and child on his tights last week. As Strong was in the middle of calling Dream out, Bronson Reed’s music played. He came out and challenged Strong to a match and the two went at it as soon as Reed hit the ring.

Roderick Strong defeated Bronson Reed

Reed pulled Strong’s Undisputed Era t-shirt over his head and laid in hard forearms. He controlled much of the early part of this match, deliberate with his power offense so that it came off like he was really manhandling Strong.

Later, Reed put Strong down with a delayed brainbuster. Strong rolled to the floor for a breather, but Reed laid Strong out again with a jumping shoulder block from the apron to the floor. The show cut to a commercial break here, and the two brawled on the floor for two or three advertisements. Strong made a comeback, threw Reed back into the ring and slowed things down in the ring with a crossface lock until the show was back from break.

Reed was powering out of the submission when they returned. He turned Strong inside-out with a short lariat. When Reed went to the top for a frog splash, Strong countered and returned with a second-rope superplex that got a “holy sh*t” chant from the Full Sail Audience.

Strong’s comeback was in full swing when the lights dimmed and the purple lava-lamp lighting from Velveteen’s Dream entranced filled the venue. Strong went to the floor to confront Dream, who never showed up. Reed took Strong out with a tope suicida here. Back in the ring, Reed flew off the top but Strong caught him with a huge jumping knee for the win.

After the match, Velveteen Dream appeared on the screen above the entrance ramp. The first shot we saw was of his rear end, which had the phrase CALL ME UP, MARINA airbrushed onto his white tights. Dream essentially explained he wanted revenge for Strong putting him on the shelf, and to get into his head he’d keep digging in with family angle, insinuating he’d be moving in on Strong’s wife, Marina Shaffir, and their son, Troy. The segment wrapped when the camera shooting Dream revealed the front of his tights, which had Strong’s family’s face airbrushed onto them, Dream’s face next to theirs in place of Strong’s. Strong darted to the back in a rage. Strong segment.

Next up was an amusing promo with Pete Dunne and Matt Riddle. They acted like they didn’t know how they were going to get to Portland with their Dusty Cup trophy, so Riddle planned a road trip. They bantered in the car next and did a few jokes about riding on right and left sides of the road, then got pulled over by police. Odd Couple-type stuff. These will probably be a hit if they keep making them.

Back from another break and we got a promo from Angel Garza backstage. Lio Rush joined him and the two talked some trash to build their match later on in the night.

Dakota Kai defeated Candace LeRae

Kai power bombed LeRae at the bell, but LeRae responded immediately with a tope to the floor. This felt like an intense brawl as soon as it started; after only a couple minutes into the match, LeRae’s nose was already gushing blood. From here, they cut to another commercial break.

We returned with LeRae planting Kai with an avalanche swinging neckbreaker. After a pump-handle suplex, LeRae locked Kai in the Gargano Escape shoulder lock until Kai broke the hold when she got to the ropes for the break. Kai then rolled LeRae up with a cradle and won the match. LeRae went after Kai afterwards, but Kai fought back and tried using the ring bell on LeRae until Tegan Nox appeared from out of the crowd and went after her former tag partner, Kai. The crowd chanted “LET THEM FIGHT!” until officials shuffled everyone to the back. Good stuff all around but too short, like these segments have been. I expect Kai and Nox to have one of the dark horse matches of the night this coming Sunday, and this segment was good proof of what’s to come.

Johnny Gargano defeated Cameron Grimes via submission

Really mat wrestling throughout early, really good stuff, as you’d expect if you’re already familiar with these two. Gargano’s lats look insane these days, straight-up action figure dimensions. Minutes into the match they brought the match to the floor and Gargano landed a somersault senton off the apron. Gargano took much of the match early on, but Grimes rallied back and blasted “Johnny Wrestling” with a lariat before cutting to the next commercial.

Back from break, Grimes scored a close nearfall with a beautiful bridging German suplex. Gargano later responded with a tornado flatliner, then knocked Grimes to the floor with a hard running lariat. Grimes caught Gargano in a Spanish Fly as both were running the ropes. They traded high spots for the next minute or so until Gargano caught Grimes in a headscissors and transitioned into the Gargano Escape; Grimes tapped almost immediately. This was an outstanding match.

Adam Cole spoke with Cathy Kelley backstage and said he’d do whatever it takes to keep the NXT championship from Tomasso Ciampa this weekend.

Another Dunne & Riddle vignette aired next. Riddle told Dunne to stop worrying about how they’d be getting to Portland this weekend and insisted he not be such a “silly goose.” The camera then pulled back and we saw that both were sitting in a giant swan-shaped paddle boats in a port or river near a city. It was the same kind of banter from them we saw early, lots of Riddle saying “bro” a lot and Dunne playing the straight man. I think it’s working, but we’ll really see how it works this Sunday in front of a live audience.

Robert Stone (TNA’s Robbie E) was on screen next when they returned from break. He explained how NXT would know about his “brand” soon enough. Chelsea Green appeared, too, and reiterated the same idea. Stone feels like he’s being shoehorned into this manager/valet role and it comes off as overkill at the moment.

Lio Rush defeated Angel Garza

Garza whipped his entrance pants off before the bell and we heard tons off “woooos” from females in the crowd. I guess he is a babyface again. He and Rush got right into it after the bell sounded, but Garza began slowing the pace moments later, throwing Rush to the floor and slamming him back-first into the steel staircase as they cut to the next break.

Rush was mid-air when we were back from commercials. He landed a tope, then an Asai corckscrew moonsault onto Garza onto the floor. NXT production time seem to have been timing the breaks to always begin with a spectacular spot, never at a random spot in the match.

Both traded wild high spots, a sequence that really culminated when Rush landed a frog splash from the top rope to the floor. He then tried landing it in the ring but Garza got his knees up. When Garza went for the Wing Clipper, Rush reversed it into an inside cradle and scored the win. Lio Rush is now the number one contender for the NXT Cruiserweight title. Current champion, Jordan Devlin, congratulated Rush on the entrance ramp after the match. He told him he didn’t fancy Rush’s chances against himself and that you shouldn’t ever bet against him.

Keith Lee was announced as a guest for next Tuesday’s episode of WWE Backstage.

A video package aired with Mark Henry aired next. It was basically a promo putting over Keith Lee and Dominik Dijakovic. I speculate they’re using Mark Henry to “legitmately” get both guys over; since Henry already has tenure and clout with WWE, fans will be more likely to take his word for it. Though Keith Lee came off as the main focus of this.

Bianca Belair defeated Santana Garrett

Total squash. Belair went after Garrett before the bell, stomped a mudhole in her, did a standing moonsault, a nip-up, then finished Garrett off with her sitout Burning Hammer for the win in under a minute. She got on the mic right after. She thought Ripley was acting like Belair was invisible since all that happened on last week’s episode. Ripley’s music hit and she came to the ring to join Belair.

Next was another short Riddle & Dunne skit. Riddle found an airplane they could use to get to Portland. When Dunne asked whose it was, Riddle said he knew a guy. As they took off, we saw Triple H on his cell phone, presumably walking to his private plane that the Broserweights just took off in.

Tomasso Ciampa was shown sitting in a lecture hall next. He was watching video of himself last year speaking with HHH last year and wearing a neckbrace, where Ciampa claims he “gave his life away” when he had to give up his NXT championship. Ciamapa got really intense towards the end when he was introducing these “What if Cole wins/What if I win?” hypotheticals. Very good.

Adam Cole vs. Kushida

The crowd sounded pumped for this match. The two got right to it–they didn’t start wrestling until about 9:52 PM EST–and after a bit of grappling inside the ring, Cole escaped to the floor to collect himself, but Kushida went right after him. Cole attacked Kushida on last week’s episode, so this was booked as a revenge match. Cole caught Kushida with a big boot on the floor before they cut to the last commercial break. NXT aired the match in an inset screen during this, which mostly consisted of Cole controlling Kushida with a headlock. They then took each other out with a double clothesline as the show returned from the break.

Kushida landed a diving DDT into an armlock, but Cole broke the hold by getting his foot on the bottom rope. Cole and Kushida traded an ecclectic mix of strikes, and later Cole gained another nearfall with a superkick. Kushida responded with a Pele kick, then a few short Kawada kicks that Mauro Ranallo referenced on commentary. Cole answered with an aprubt Last Shot moments after and scored the pin. Tomasso Ciampa’s music hit next and Ciampa walked out to the ring, slowly, and confronted Cole ahead of their match this weekend at NXT Takeover in Portland. Ciampa got into the ring and the two had a staredown. Ciampa pointed to the belt and said he was going to take his life back, while Cole said he’d only let that happen over his dead body.

Final thoughts:

Nothing flashy here, just a solid go-home show for Takeover this weekend. It was everything it had to be. Johnny Gargano and Cameron Grimes stole tonight’s show, though Candace LeRae and Dakota Kai may have if they were given a longer segment. Cole vs. Kushida in the main event was also very good, but it did feel rushed, but that’s negligble here because the end goal is Takeover on Sunday, not tonight.

Cole vs. Kushida, Gargano vs. Grimes confirmed for NXT

Update —

WWE has also confirmed that Johnny Gargano vs. Cameron Grimes is set for tonight’s NXT. The match had been teased after video of an angle where they got into a confrontation at an NXT house show in Riverside, California was posted over the weekend.

The match comes in advance of Gargano facing Finn Balor at NXT TakeOver: Portland on Sunday.

**********

Another match has been confirmed for tonight’s NXT.

NXT Champion Adam Cole will face Kushida in a non-title match tonight. Cole sent out a tweet today to set the match up: “In a really bad mood…and I hear Kushida has a problem with what happened last week. Ok tough guy, how about tonight you try and do something about it? I bet you won’t. @WWENXT #nxtonusa”

While Undisputed Era were looking for Tommaso Ciampa last week, they attacked Kushida and Cole gave him a Death Valley Driver into a trash can.

Cole will defend his NXT Championship against Ciampa at TakeOver: Portland on Sunday.

Tonight’s NXT is the go-home show for TakeOver. Candice LeRae vs. Dakota Kai has been confirmed for tonight, along with a Cruiserweight title number one contender’s match between Lio Rush and Angel Garza.

There will be a battle royal to determine who will challenge Rhea Ripley for the NXT Women’s Championship at TakeOver: Portland. Bianca Belair, Candice LeRae, Chelsea Green, Dakota Kai, Vanessa Borne, Kayden Carter, Mia Yim, Santana Garrett, Io Shirai, Shotzi Blackheart, Xia Li, and Mercedes Martinez are advertised for the battle royal.

Angel Garza will defend his NXT Cruiserweight Championship in a fatal four-way match at Worlds Collide. Two of his challengers will be from NXT UK, while the other one will be decided by a triple threat match between Lio Rush, Isaiah “Swerve” Scott, and Tyler Breeze on tonight’s show.

Our live coverage begins at 8 p.m. Eastern time.

**********

The show from Full Sail opened with Keith Lee coming to the ring for a promo. Lee next week challenges Roderick Strong for the NXT North American Championship. A vocal majority of the live crowd chanted for Lee as he talked about his upcomimg title shot, and he addressed Undisputed Era. They might hold all the titles, but they have peaked — whereas Lee said he was “limitless”. This was really good promo.

When Lee vowed to win the title next week, Undisputed Era interrupted the promo. Adam Cole snarled at Lee on the microphone while flanked by Strong, Kyle O’Reilly and Bobby Fish. The heel faction jumped Lee. He fought back and cleaned house at first, but he was greatly outnumbered as the heels closed in like wolves on their prey.

Strong hit him with a chair and Pillmanized Lee’s ankle in the chair. Tommaso Ciampa ran down to make a save. He fought off Unidsputed Era, and they soon fled the scene like frightened coyotes.

Finn Balor vs. Johnny Gargano was announced as official for NXT TakeOver: Portland.

Tegan Nox was being interviewed outside the building when Candice LeRae ran up to her for a hug. Meanwhile, Io Shirai and Mia Yim were psyching themselves up ahead of the women’s battle royal later on.

Matt Riddle & Pete Dunne defeated Flash Morgan Webster & Mark Andrews to advance in the Dusty Classic

Riddle pinned Andrews in the conclusion of an exciting match.

The match was just beginning when the show cut to commercial. Dunne & Riddle worked over Webster during much of the break. Webster was taking a beating when the show returned from commercial. Webster still managed to escape their clutches, and he tagged out.

Andrews ran wild off a hot tag. Dunne & Riddle bumped and fed. Webster & Andrews did stereo flip dives over the ropes to the floor. More tandem offense got them a near fall.

Webster went for a springboard, and Dunne decked him in mid-air with a punch. Dunne witha flurry on Andrews before tagging Riddle.

Setting uo tandem moves of their own, Dunne with a release suplex on Andrews. Riddle then caught Andrews in the air for a powerbomb. Riddle then hit a knee strike while Dunne also hit Andrew with a kick at the same time. Webster jumped in to break up a pinning attempt.

Riddle & Dunne maintained their aggression until Andrews executed a Northern Lights out of nowhere. He followed with a double stomp on Dunne as the show cut to commercial. No in-set this time.

The show returned from break with a hot tag to Webster. He leapt into a moonsault, hit a shotgum dropkick, springboarded into another dropkick, and then he jumped off the top turnbuckle with a somersault senton to the floor.

Riddle cut off Andrews and had him in an electric chair when Webster hit Riddle with a kick — and Andrews executed a poison rana. After a near fall on Riddle, the fans clapped along to a “tag team wrestling” chant.

Andrews delivered a tornado DDT to Dunne on the floor. Webster went for a splash, but ate a spear from Riddle instead. Andrews ate another spear, but he was able to small package Riddle for a two count.

Dunne tagged in to help deliver a double-team strike on Webster for a close near fall. Webster also caught Riddle in a cradle, but Dunne was able to bump Andrews into the referee to break the count.

Andrews countered an X-plex into stunner. Things were looking good for his team until Riddle caught Webster on a tope. Riddle then delivered a Gotch Driver on the floor. Andrews went for a shooting star press in the ring, but Dunne clocked him with a right hand.

Dunne with a pump handle suplex that set up a knee strike by Riddle. After that combo, Riddle covered Andrews for the pinfall.

Highlights from TakeOver: Blackpool II showed Undisputed Era attacking WALTER. Cole and his faction meet Imperium in a eight-man tag match at Worlds Collide.

Tommaso Ciampa sauntered to the ring for a promo. Ciampa said it was clear that Undisputed Era has a hit list. So does Ciampa, and Cole is at the top of that list. Ciampa wants Goldie back. He wants his life back!

Undisputed Era hit the ring for a gang attack on Ciampa. They were beating him down when Johnny Gargano ran down to make a save. Gargano cleared the ring and cleaned house. Ciampa also struck with a Widows Bell to help clean up. The crowd chanted “DIY” as the former tag team partners seemingly had reunited — at least for a fleeting moment.

Up next is another reunion as THE TIME SPLITTERS ARE BACK!

Grizzled Young Veterans (Zack Gibson & James Drake) defeated Kushida & Alex Shelley to advance in the Dusty Classic

Drake pinned Shelley after the Ticket to Mayhem. Great win for the Grizzled Young Veterans. The announcers never referrred to Kushida & Shelley as “Time Splitters”, but they did talk about their history as a team.

Shelley got to shine at the outset of the match, and then him and Kushida did stereo dives to the outside. The Grizzled Young Veterans fired up on their opponents with a RVD/Saby spot as the show cut to commercial.

The show returned with heat on Shelley, and then Kushida launched into the ring after a hot tag. He connected with a handspring back elbow and a windup punch. He briefly caught Drake in an armbar. Double team tactics cut off Kushida. He kicked out for a two count, and then he fought off Grizzled Young Veterans. Shelley tagged in to begin a display of Time Splitter greatness.

Kushida & Shelley with combos, inlcuding a few signature ones. Kushida was perched on the top turnbuckle when Gibson shoved him to the floor. Shelley was then outnumbered as he fell victim to Gibson & Drake. Shelley went for sliced bread #2, but was countered. He took the Ticket to Mayhem, and Drake covered him for the pinfall.

Kushida & Shelley offered handshakes after the match, but Gibson & Drake heeled on them. Gibson then cut a promo saying they are the future, and he vowed they will win the Dusty Classic.

In a pre-tape skit, Robert Stone said he pulled Chelsea Green from the battle royal tonight. She is the hottest star, and apparently too big of a star for the battle royal. Stone and Green got in a car and drove away.

Isaiah “Swerve” Scott defeated Tyler Breeze and Lio Rush in a triple threat match

Swerve pinned Breeze to earn a spot in the fatal four way match for the NXT Cruiserweight Championship at Worlds Collide. The Cruiserweight Champion — Angel Garza — was doing guest commentary.

This was as wild and hectic as you would expect with a triple threat these days with these guys. The match was good, but it was hard to keep track of with the parade of highspots.

In the closing moments, Rush fired up on Swerve and Breeze. Rush with the Final Hour (frogsplash) on Breeze, and then the Come Up (springboard cutter) on Swerve.

Breeze tried to steal a pin, but Swerve cut him off to deliver a package dirver for the pinfall.

Cathy Kelley was oustide the building interviewing Gargano when Ciampa approached him. They talked about teaming for “old time sake”. Undisputed Era entered the scene to confront DIY as sceurity held back the faction.

Keith Lee ran in out of nowhere to spear a security guard through some bushes. Lee then hurled another security guard onto the hood of a car. He was screaming about Strong as security tried to restrain him. He threw another guy over a table. Lee screamed threats at Strong ahead of their title match next week.

Bianca Belair won a number one contender’s battle royal

Notable returns in the this match included Kacy Catanzaro and Tegan Nox both back in action. Mercedes Martinez also returned to NXT in this match — but this time she is officially part of the NXT roster after signing with WWE. Martinez more than deserves the opportunity.

The former NXT Women’s champion — Shayna Baszler –was the final surprise entrant as she returned to Full Sail for the first time since dropping the title.

Other entrants included Bianca Belair, Mia Yim, Io Shirai, Santana Garrett, Xia Li, Vanessa Borne, Kayden Carter, Shotzi Blackheart, Catalina, Jessi Kamae and MJ Jenkins.

The match itself was like almost every battle royal you have seen before. They did some good highspots before the show cut to commercial. After the break the field had dwindled down somewhat. The eliminations started to come more quickly from this point forward.

Martinez did some spots with Baszler in the final minutes. Baszler eliminated Martinez from the match. Hopefully that leads to a match bewteen the two soon. Fingers crossed that happens.

The final four were Baszler, Belair, Nox and Shirai…or at least that was what we were supposed to think.

Nox fired up in the closing moments as she ran wild. Nox was climbing the turnbuckles when her nemesis Dakota Kai ran in to trip her up. Nox fell the floor and was eliminated.

Shirai found herself trapped on the apron in a Kirifuda Clutch applied by Baszler. Blackheart suddenly rolled back into the ring to throw out Baszler. Blackheart had apparently never been eliminated. She was gloating and was then eliminated by Belair.

Shirai and Belair were left as the final two. Shirau struck with a Tiger Feint Kick, but Belair countered a moment later with a fallaway slam.

They were fighting on the top turnbuckle while they teased falling out of the ring. They also fought on the apron, and fought back in the ring.

After several exchanges, Belair had Shirai in a torture rack when she threw Shirai over the top rope to win the match. Shirai took a helluva bump on the floor, and Belair was declared the winner.

Belair is now the number one contender in the NXT women’s division. She challenges for the title at Worlds Collide.
