Former AEW champion returning as part of Forbidden Door card change

The return of Adam Copeland and Christian Cage as a team at this Sunday’s AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door got another interesting twist during Wednesday’s Dynamite: the former Luchasaurus.

Cage and Copeland were doing an in-ring interview with Tony Schiavone when Kip Sabian and Mother Wayne came out to interrupt. Nick Wayne was then shown on the videoboard on crutches, saying he broke his foot avoiding Cage swinging Copeland’s spiked 4×4 at him. He said Cage took Forbidden Door away from him, but he was always a step ahead.

A video of Killswitch/Luchasaurus played and he then emerged, heading to the ring with Sabian and Wayne following. Cage took out Sabian while Copeland was chokeslammed by Killswitch. The former Patriarchy member and Cage had a staredown and then Cage got chokeslammed by his former stablemate. It was then revealed Killswitch will team with Sabian in Wayne’s place.

The former AEW Tag Team Champion, TNT Champion and Trios Champion was hospitalized in September 2024 with complications from pneumonia in both of his lungs and there was speculation his in-ring career was on the line. The 40-year-old hasn’t wrestled since August 2024’s All In.

Luchasaurus ‘doing much better’ in recovery from double pneumonia

AEW’s Luchasaurus is on the mend and doing much better as he recovers from a bout with double pneumonia that threatened his life.

Real name Austin Matelson, the 39-year-old AEW star was hospitalized in late September with pneumonia in both lungs after his fiancé found him collapsed.

In an update posted to social media for his subscribers, our Bryan Alvarez notes that Matelson is “doing much better” and credits AEW’s medical staff and Tony Khan with saving his life.

Alvarez writes:

“He is doing much better. I am told he is working hard towards a comeback and credits Tony Khan and AEW medical staff for not only being patient with this, but but also telling him to stay home the week before he collapsed, which may have saved his life. It was very serious.”

Now going by Killswitch in AEW storylines, Matelson last wrestled for the company in August at All In as part of the Casino Battle Royale.

Killswitch hospitalized with pneumonia in both lungs

Killswitch is currently in the hospital.

Bryan Alvarez has confirmed a Fightful Select report posted on Monday that the AEW star is currently hospitalized with pneumonia in both lungs and is on oxygen. According to the report, Killswitch’s fiance found him collapsed on Friday, where he was rushed to the hospital. There, they found his oxygen below 80 percent. It was also mentioned that he was days away from suffering permanent damage to his lungs.

According to the report, he was told to expect a recovery time of over a month. It remains unclear when he will be able to return to in-ring action.

Luchasaurus is a prominent part of the AEW roster, associated with Christian Cage and Nick Wayne as part of The Patriarchy. His last match took place at All In back in August, where he helped Christian Cage win the Casino Gauntlet Battle Royal. Earlier in the show, he was unsuccessful as the Patriarchy lost the AEW Trios titles to Claudio Castagnoli, Wheeler Yuta, and PAC.

AEW injury updates: Skye Blue, Dalton Castle, Jay White, Killswitch

Several members of the AEW roster are dealing with recently suffered injuries.

– Bryan Alvarez has confirmed that Skye Blue suffered a broken ankle while facing Hikaru Shida on AEW Collision this past Saturday. Just minutes into the match, Blue hurt her right ankle while catching Shida on a crossbody to the outside. The match was stopped, Blue received medical treatment, and she was helped to the back.

Blue’s significant other Kyle Fletcher shared a photo to social media on Sunday where Blue’s leg was in a cast.

– Dalton Castle is set to miss the remainder of 2024 after being injured while facing Roderick Strong in a match for Collision that was taped on July 10. During the bout, Castle was knocked out with a flying knee. It caused the match to end earlier than expected when Castle was unable to kick out of Strong’s pin attempt.

Alvarez notes that Castle did not suffer a concussion. It’s a different injury, and Castle will need to undergo surgery

– Jay White’s injury that caused The Bang Bang Gang (White, Austin Gunn & Colten Gunn) to vacate the AEW Trios titles is a legitimate foot injury, but White is not expected to miss a significant amount of time.

– After the titles were vacated, The Patriarchy (Christian Cage, Killswitch & Nick Wayne) defeated Juice Robinson & The Gunns to become the new AEW Trios Champions. Killswitch (the former Luchasaurus) hurt his arm in that match, but it’s expected that he’ll work through it. The injury appears to be a partially torn biceps.

Swerve Strickland vs. Killswitch announced for AEW Dynamite

The AEW World Champion will be in action on Wednesday.

Swerve Strickland vs. Killswitch in a non-title match has been announced for the show. Strickland is coming off having defeated Killswitch’s mentor and leader of the Patriarchy, Christian Cage, at Double or Nothing on Sunday.

Tony Khan announced the news on Tuesday. The match graphic he posted includes a promotion for HBO’s House of the Dragon season two, which debuts on Max next month.

AEW also promoted the debut of House of the Dragon season one in 2022 as well. On the August 17 edition of Dynamite that year, Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat served as guest timekeeper for the show. The main event was also billed as “The American Dragon” Bryan Danielson vs. “The Dragon Slayer” Daniel Garcia.

Also announced for Wednesday’s show is Chris Jericho debuting a new interview segment titled, “TV Time with The Learning Tree Chris Jericho.”

Only one other match is confirmed for Wednesday thus far, a Casino Gauntlet match to determine who challenges for the AEW World Championship at Forbidden Door on June 30.

AEW on TNT also posted to social media that we will “get answers” from Kris Statlander and Stokely Hathaway on the show after they turned on Willow Nightingale at Double or Nothing. ROH Women’s World Champion Athena also seems to be upset with Nightingale.

Killswitch earns future TNT title shot in AEW Worlds End battle royale

Killswitch has earned a TNT Championship match.

The former Luchasaurus won a 20-man battle royale at Saturday’s Worlds End Zero Hour show to earn a shot at the TNT title “anytime, anywhere.”

Killswitch last eliminated Trent Beretta to win the battle royale, a match that also involved Danhausen, Lance Archer, Rocky Romero, The Butcher, The Blade, Action Andretti, Darius Martin, Christopher Daniels, Matt Menard, Bryan Keith, Kip Sabian, John Silver, Alex Reynolds, Angelo Parker, Lee Johnson, Johnny TV, Dalton Castle & Serpentico.

Killswitch is aligned with current TNT Champion Christian Cage along with Nick Wayne & Shayna Wayne in Cage’s The Patriarchy group. Prior to the battle royale at Worlds End, Killswitch had been out of action since defeating The Boys in a two-on-one match on a November edition of Collision.

Cage is set to defend the TNT title against Adam Copeland in a no-DQ match later in the Worlds End pay-per-view.

Luchasaurus given new name by Christian Cage on AEW Dynamite

Luchasaurus has been given a new name.

On Wednesday’s Dynamite, Cage blamed Luchasaurus for losing the six-man tag team match at Full Gear last Saturday and told him to take a knee. He said he thought about it and rechristened Luchasaurus under the name Killswitch. Nick Wayne got on his knee as well, but Cage told him to stand up, saying he should never take a knee to another man. He told Wayne that he would be given the nickname The Prodigy.

Luchasaurus didn’t seem sure about the situation and got up. Cage argued with Luchasaurus as Nick Wayne’s mother, Shayna, came to the ring. Cage insulted Shayna and Nick Wayne’s late father, Buddy Wayne. Luchasaurus got in front of the two as Cage shoved Luchasaurus, accidentally colliding into Shayna as she fell to the floor.

Cage instructed Nick Wayne to grab a chair for a conchairto. Cage ordered Luchasaurus to do it, but Luchasaurus paused until Adam Copeland made the save. Luchasaurus took Cage out of the ring before Copeland could get to him. Copeland responded by spearing Wayne twice then gave him a conchairto in front of his mother, who was still recovering in the ring.

Cage, Wayne, and Luchasaurus lost to Copeland, Sting, and Darby Allin at last week’s Full Gear, with Luchasaurus taking the pin.
