John Cena Sr. praises Gunther, Dominik Mysterio after son’s final WWE matches

John Cena Sr. has a “tremendous amount of respect” for Gunther and believes The Ring General did a great job in his son’s retirement match.

Ahead of the December 13 Saturday Night’s Main Event special, Cena Sr. made headlines by expressing that he did not want Gunther to be his son’s final opponent. He ideally would have liked to see someone like Kurt Angle, Adam Copeland, Chris Jericho, or JBL in that spot, but Cena Sr. ended up loving the match his son and Gunther had.

“That match was excellent,” the elder Cena told Undisputed. “I have a tremendous amount of respect for Gunther. He and John wrestled a great match together. They had people on the edge of their seats that entire match.”

The finish saw Cena submit while Gunther had him locked in a sleeper. With Cena flashing a smile across his face, the moment was supposed to feel like him going out peacefully as he ended his time in the ring. Cena Sr. reacted to the controversial finish and told Undisputed he would have liked to have seen a different ending. He does not necessarily think his son had to lose the match.

“I’m not one of those guys who thinks you have to go down when you go out,” Cena Sr. said. “When you look at the faces of people at the end of that match, with grown men and women in tears, I think we could have achieved the same result with a different finish.”

Before the Gunther match, Cena worked a series of bouts against Dominik Mysterio that saw them trade the Intercontinental Championship back and forth. Cena Sr. told Undisputed that he’s a big believer in Dominik’s potential.

“Dom is spectacular,” Cena Sr. said. “People like him hold a lot of promise for the future of pro wrestling.”

Cena Sr. noted that his son is a man of his word, so he knows this is truly it and Cena will never wrestle again. Cena will still remain part of WWE, though, with him signing a five-year ambassador contract with the company.

Je’Von Evans says he’s been texting with John Cena: ‘It means so much’

Je’Von Evans grew up a John Cena fan — and now he’s able to reach out to Cena whenever he needs advice.

The 21-year-old rising WWE star recently competed on the same show as Cena’s retirement match. Through that experience and Cena’s visits to the Performance Center, Evans has been able to develop a connection with him. He and Cena have been texting with Cena giving Evans advice on wrestling and life in general.

“I grew up watching Cena, which is probably a crazy thing to say or a crazy thing for y’all to hear,” Evans told the Battleground Podcast. “Like, I grew up watching Cena. It’s crazy to know now that like — and I say this almost every interview — the legends that I’ve had connections with, now I can hit them up whenever, you know? And now that i just made a connection with Cena, we’ve been texting. He gives me advice about wrestling, about life, all that. It means so much, it means so much. From being a fan to now being a colleague and learning under his tree — it’s insane.

Cena is said to be “very high” on Evans’ potential. Some of the advice he’s given Evans is to make sure he’s having a conversation with the audience through his in-ring work and allowing fans the time to react to what’s going on.

On Raw last night, it was noted that Evans will be a “free agent” soon with a call-up to either Raw or SmackDown on the horizon. He is still a member of the NXT roster at the moment.

Evans teamed with Leon Slater in a loss to AJ Styles & Dragon Lee at WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 13. Cena had his retirement match in the main event of the show, ending his career with a submission loss to Gunther.

When asked abour dream opponents he’s looking forward to facing, Evans told the Battleground Podcast that he’d love to have matches against CM Punk and Rey Mysterio.

Gunther: Goldberg was ‘way more limited’ than John Cena

Gunther says Goldberg was far more limited than John Cena.

During an interview with TMZ earlier this week, Gunther was asked to compare his match against Goldberg from the July 12 edition of Saturday Night’s Main Event with his match against Cena from the December 13 Saturday Night’s Main Event. Gunther said the two matches were difficult to compare.

“Well, very different situation, I think, because Goldberg was way more limited than John was and John was just a better wrestler overall his whole career. That’s not like a dig to Goldberg, he didn’t get famous by putting on in-ring master classes. That was never his thing. So, it was a very different situation,” Gunther said.

“But also the magnitude of it. Obviously, Goldberg is a big name but it’s not comparable to what John Cena represents, and the following he has, and what he carries with him, and the connection that people have to him. So, it was hard to compare.”

Later in the interview, Gunther said that WWE fans will probably be crying over his retirement match when the time comes.

“In 10 years or so, they’re going to stand there and cry over me losing my last match. It’s what they do.”

Gunther’s comments comparing John Cena and Goldberg appear around the 5:10 mark of the video below (cued).

John Cena reveals ‘epiphany’ he had before WWE retirement

Right up until the end of his career, John Cena was still learning new things about professional wrestling.

Cena revealed during his “What Do You Wanna Talk About?” appearance that, just one day before his retirement, he had an epiphany about wrestling. Matches are like a conversation where the performers and audience each get to say their piece. When you’re having a conversation with someone, they’re going to tune you out if you just talk at them and don’t allow them to contribute as well. It’s important that wrestlers understand that and give the audience time to contribute to the match.

Understanding this has helped Cena give advice to young talent. Instead of being another old-timer telling them to slow down, he can articulate how crucial it is for them to let the fans play a part in their performance.

“The epiphany was crazy, right? And it’s just an example of like, let’s never stop learning,” Cena said. “This is Friday, I get this, like, ‘Holy sh*t, I found a way to say what I’m actually feeling.’ I was just reading through a book and it was about the ability to have fierce conversations. And you want to, you want to let everybody contribute. You want to have a conversation. And they were talking about the power of the pause and the silence, essentially slowing down. It’s those moments where you do action — it’s your piece of the conversation. And then you slow down to allow the arena to have their piece of the conversation. I’m like, ‘Holy sh*t. I think I can finally articulate what’s up here to a Je’Von Evans at 21 years old.’

“Be like, ‘Je’Von, if I talk to you for 45 minutes, you’re not going to care. But if we can talk, if you can tell me what’s on your mind and I can talk to you, and then maybe we both walk away having grown a little bit. Just make sure you do that in your matches.’ You know what I’m saying? Where I don’t have to say, ‘Slow down, kid. You’re going too fast.’ That immediately puts you on the defensive. ‘Slow down? You can’t keep up, old man.’ It’s not about that. You’re going to feel it when you feel it. But now you got a chip on your shoulder to prove me wrong and prove working fast is going to work. I’m not saying it doesn’t. I’m just saying — just make sure you always have a conversation with them out there. And that happened the day before I retired. So what I love about it is, you’re learning all the time.”

For Cena, the ending of his retirement match against Gunther at Saturday Night’s Main Event was also a conversation he was having with the audience. Cena struggled in a sleeper and ultimately tapped out with a smile on his face. Cena said the decision to smile while giving up was him going out peacefully after giving everything he had.

Cena made a couple of visits to the WWE Performance Center ahead of his retirement match — and it was his idea to include NXT talent on the undercard of the SNME special. Evans teamed up with Leon Slater in a loss to AJ Styles & Dragon Lee that night. Oba Femi and Sol Ruca were also featured in matches.

Gunther never saw himself in WWE, says Japan was his ‘jam’

Days after retiring John Cena at Saturday Night’s Main Event, Gunther opened up about his own career and reflected on signing with WWE.

Speaking on The Ringer Wrestling Show, Gunther shared in detail about signing with WWE NXT, and how he never saw himself as a part of the Stamford-based promotion, and always envisioned ‘Japan as his jam’.

When asked if Gunther ever had any doubts about being himself in WWE when signing with the company, he said, “Oh, yes, I did. And that’s why I didn’t, yeah, sign with them for a bit before I actually went. It was definitely a fault.”

“I never saw myself in WWE. I always thought I would, yeah, if things go well, I work in Japan, and that’s my jam, and that’s where I fit. That never happened, really,” Gunther claimed. “Yeah, now we’re here. So it’s like, hard to predict. You should never like cancel anything out in your life when it comes to like possibilities and stuff like that.”

“I never expected it to fit that well as it does. But here we are. And I think as long as I can be here and be a good contrast to everybody else and provide something different, I think that’s why it fits. And as long as I can do it, I think I’m going to have a good position here.”

In the same podcast, the former champion also opened up about how he enjoyed getting ‘booed’ by the crowd after making Cena tap out.

John Cena addresses The Rock and Travis Scott’s WWE disappearance

Cody Rhodes and John Cena have finally opened up about their thoughts on The Rock and Travis Scott’s disappearance following WWE Elimination Chamber and WrestleMania 41.

Rhodes and Cena have addressed the sudden disappearance of The Rock and Travis Scott from WWE storylines following Elimination Chamber and WrestleMania 41, with the veteran revealing that neither he nor Rhodes dwelled on what could have been once the alliance was dropped. During Cena’s recent appearance on Rhodes’ What Do You Wanna Talk About? podcast, the duo reacted to it.

Speaking about the abandoned storyline, the 17-time World Champion explained that once the promotion lost access to The Rock and Scott, their focus immediately shifted to moving forward rather than speculating on missed possibilities.

“Hey, you have The Rock and Travis Scott.’ Awesome, we can plan all this stuff. ‘Hey, you don’t have those two guys anymore,’” Cena added. “Not once did you and I, the whole world has had the conversation of, ‘What would it have been like if?’ The two guys in it, with their d**k in the dirt, not once had a conversation about, ‘Man, what would it have been like if we had those guys?’ No. It was, ‘What do we do now?”

At Elimination Chamber, Cena joined forces with The Rock and Travis Scott to turn heel on Rhodes. The shocking moment led to one of the most talked-about storylines of the year, with Cena taking help from Scott at WrestleMania 41 to win his 17th World Championship. However, soon after that, the alliance storyline was dropped with both The Rock and Scott disappearing from the promotion.

Despite Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and Scott missing from the promotion, Cena continued his run as a heel and participated in several highly-anticipated matches.

John Cena responds to fans criticizing his retirement run due to The Rock and Travis Scott’s absence

In the same interview, Cena also responded to the fans criticizing his retirement run due to The Rock and Scott’s absence.

“Lets walk down hypothetical street. Let’s say everyone who showed up at the Chamber is active until August. That robs us of John Cena, Randy Orton, that robs us of John Cena, CM Punk, John Cena, Ron Cena, John Cena, AJ Styles, John Cena, Logan Paul, me, and you for the last one.”

He further claimed, “So yes, the story that might have been might have had star power, and gravity, and who knows what, but what we got by just being like ‘these are the pieces left’. What we got, for me personally, was beautiful.”

Following a year of several iconic matches, Cena finally retired against Gunther on the December 13th edition of Saturday Night’s Main Event.

Gunther ‘enjoyed’ being booed after making John Cena tap out

Gunther has claimed that he “enjoyed” getting booed by fans following his victory over John Cena, stating that the reaction marked a shift away from any respect he previously felt from crowds.

On the December 13th edition of Saturday Night’s Main Event, Gunther retired Cena after a dominating victory. Cena tapped out and finally gave up after getting trapped in a rear-naked choke. However, the crowd immediately showcased their displeasure over the booking and heavily drowned Gunther in boos. A similar reaction followed on the next Monday-night Raw. Gunther recently appeared on The Ringer Wrestling Show and expressed his reaction to the heavy booing.

The former World Champion explained that he welcomed the change in crowd reaction, claiming that he no longer sensed any “subconscious” respect for his in-ring work and viewed that as a positive development for his character.

“I feel like I got booed before, and I got those reactions. But I always felt like a little bit of a subconscious respect for the work I do in the ring. And yeah, I feel like that’s gone,” Gunther added. “And I think that’s good. I enjoyed it because I’m not out here to, I don’t care what people have to say or judge or whatever. I know what I do, and I know what I can do and what I can’t.”

“I really don’t care about anybody else’s judgment about it. So it’s good, I feel like we’ve reached a really good point there.”

He further opened up about his thought process before going out on Raw and his plans on addressing the crowd.

“And also like Monday before going out, because I compared it to like, okay, today, I’m going to walk out first,” he continued. “What do I say to them? Like, what do I tell them? And I compared it a little bit. That was like the, what was the first promo with Brock [Lesnar] after he beat Taker[The Undertaker]? I compared it to a little bit like Roman’s [Reigns], like the promo where he said, like, ‘it’s my yard now and all that stuff.’ But I had something prepared, but I knew the whole time where it was like, I don’t have to talk to them. They are dumb. Like, there’s nothing.”

“I’m just gonna rub it in. And as soon as I walked out, I was like, I’m just gonna rub this in now. I’m gonna enjoy that.”

Walking out in front of the crowd, Gunther claimed that “Cena tapped out like a b***h” before getting drowned in another wave of heavy boos.
