IC title match, McIntyre vs. Zayn set for next week’s WWE SmackDown

Drew McIntyre will get another shot at Sami Zayn next week.

The two will meet following what went down tonight on SmackDown. Additionally, Ricochet will defend the Intercontinental title against Jinder Mahal.

Zayn, still upset over what happened this past weekend at WrestleMania, told official Adam Pearce that he was going to fight the next person that walked out of the men’s locker room. That person happened to be McIntyre. The two had a match, but as McIntyre went to finish with the Claymore kick, Zayn bolted and headed into the crowd, giving McIntyre the win by count out.

During tonight’s SmackDown, Mahal complained to Pearce that he wasn’t getting opportunities and wanted to face Ricochet for the Intercontinental title. Before he would answer, Ronda Rousey walked in, upset that Charlotte had rejected her challenge to a match at WrestleMania Backlash. Mahal said he wasn’t done, but soon backed away.

Additionally, Lacey Evans will continue her story. She returned on tonight’s SmackDown and told her story about growing up in a abusive household and how her mother had to take Evans and her siblings from their father. She said after her experiences growing up, being part of the Marines, and being a mother, no one is better than her.

SmackDown next week takes place at the DCU Center in Worcester, Massachusetts and will include the following:

  • Drew McIntyre vs. Sami Zayn
  • Ricochet vs. Jinder Mahal for the Intercontinental title
  • Lacey Evans’ story will continue

Sami Zayn earns Intercontinental title match on WWE SmackDown

Sami Zayn won a gauntlet match on tonight’s SmackDown to become the new number one contender for the Intercontinental title.

Tonight’s show had a 12 Days of Christmas gauntlet match, where Ricochet and Zayn were the final two participants. The finish came after Zayn got the knees up following a Ricochet shooting star press attempt and connected with the helluva kick for the win. As a result of his win, Zayn earned a future title shot against current Intercontinental champion Shinsuke Nakamura.

The start of the match had Angel defeat Mansoor and Erik of the Viking Raiders. Shanky then came out and defeated Angel. Ivar of the Viking Raiders hit a diving splash to defeat Shanky. Sheamus then came out and defeated Ivar.

After Sheamus took out Drew Gulak in seconds, Cesaro came out. Sheamus was able to get the win after interference from Ridge Holland. Cesaro got a measure of revenge revenge after laying out Holland during Sheamus’ next match against Ricochet, which allowed Ricochet to roll up Sheamus for the win. After Ricochet defeated Humberto and Jinder Mahal, Zayn arrived as the final entrant.

The Intercontinental title will be on the line on next week’s SmackDown.

On SmackDown next Friday, Intercontinental Champion Shinsuke Nakamura will defend his title against former champion Apollo Crews. The episode is SmackDown’s go-home show for Extreme Rules.

Nakamura won the Intercontinental title by defeating Crews on the August 13 episode of SmackDown. The following week, Nakamura & Rick Boogs defeated Crews & Commander Azeez in a tag team match.

Boogs defeated Robert Roode in a singles match on SmackDown tonight. As Boogs and Nakamura were celebrating on the announce table with Pat McAfee after the match, Crews and Azeez attacked Nakamura and Boogs and laid them out.

Crews got on the microphone after the attack and demanded that Nakamura give him an Intercontinental title rematch. Crews said Nakamura has made a mockery of the title.

Next Friday’s SmackDown is being held at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. Liv Morgan vs. Zelina Vega has also been announced for the episode. That match comes in advance of Morgan facing Carmella at Extreme Rules.

IC title match, obstacle course set for next week’s WWE SmackDown

An Intercontinental title match — as well as an obstacle course challenge — have been announced for next week’s SmackDown.

Big E will again defend his Intercontinental title against Apollo Crews on SmackDown next Friday. The episode will also feature Bayley and Bianca Belair competing in an obstacle course challenge.

Last week’s SmackDown saw Big E retain his Intercontinental title against Crews. The match had to be restarted after it initially ended in a double pin when Crews gave Big E a superplex. On last week’s Talking Smack, a frustrated Crews said he was demanding a rematch against Big E.

Big E was on commentary while Crews defeated Sami Zayn on SmackDown tonight. Crews got the win after grabbing Zayn’s tights during the pin, which Zayn had tried to do to Crews just seconds earlier. After the match, Crews grabbed Big E’s Intercontinental title. The two had a confrontation, with Crews eventually tossing the title back to Big E and the two exchanging words.

Belair was the guest on the premiere edition of Bayley’s “Ding Dong, Hello!” talk show on SmackDown tonight. Bayley mocked her rival Belair’s “EST” catchphrase throughout the interview and said that she didn’t care about Belair’s past accomplishments. Bayley then issued the challenge for her and Belair to face off in an obstacle court competition on SmackDown next Friday, which Belair accepted.

Bayley and Belair have both declared for this year’s women’s Royal Rumble match. The Royal Rumble is taking place on Sunday, January 31.

A title change took place on tonight’s Christmas Day edition of SmackDown.

In the main event of the show, Big E defeated Sami Zayn in a lumberjack match to win the Intercontinental title. Big E pinned Zayn after hitting the Big Ending. The show then went off the air with Big E celebrating with some of the babyface lumberjacks.

After a brawl between the lumberjacks broke out, Zayn tried to walk out of the match. But The Street Profits, Otis, Chad Gable, and Apollo Crews stopped Zayn and threw him back into the ring. Big E then hit a belly-to-belly suplex, a splash, and the Big Ending to get the win.

The lumberjack stipulation was due to Zayn winning by countout multiple times in recent weeks, including against Big E in a non-title match on the December 11 episode of SmackDown.

Zayn and Big E’s title match was announced for tonight’s SmackDown after Big E pinned Zayn during an eight-man tag match on this past Sunday’s TLC pre-show. There was also a segment on SmackDown last week where Big E ruined Zayn’s “first annual Sami Awards.”

This is the second time Big E has held the Intercontinental title during his career. He was previously Intercontinental Champion from November 2013 to May 2014.

Due to today being Christmas, this week’s SmackDown was taped on Tuesday and then aired tonight.

AJ Styles to hold Intercontinental title celebration on WWE SmackDown

A championship celebration will be held this Friday on SmackDown.

AJ Styles announced tonight during Backlash that he will be holding a championship celebration in honor of himself winning the Intercontinental championship. He said that everyone was invited, including the person he beat for the championship Daniel Bryan, as he has the most to learn. Styles said Bryan was one the best ever, but wasn’t phenomenal.

Styles’ championship win was aired this past Friday on SmackDown, defeating Daniel Bryan in the finals of a tournament to crown a new champion. It was a back and forth match, with Styles picking up the win after cutting off Daniel Bryan with a phenomenal forearm off the top rope. This marks his first run with the championship.

The former champion, Sami Zayn, was stripped of the championship back on May 12 during an episode of WWE Backstage. Zayn has stayed at home, opting to not wrestle during the COVID-19 pandemic.

WWE reveals Intercontinental title tournament bracket

The bracket for WWE’s tournament to crown a new Intercontinental Champion has now been revealed.

It’s an eight-man, single-elimination tournament. The left side of the bracket has Daniel Bryan vs. Drew Gulak and Jeff Hardy vs. Sheamus as its first round matches, while Elias vs. Baron Corbin and AJ Styles vs. Shinsuke Nakamura are the first round matches on the right side of the bracket.

Styles is taking part in the tournament despite being a Raw wrestler. When the bracket was announced on SmackDown tonight, it was said that Styles was going after one of the only titles that he hasn’t won in WWE.

The brand-to-brand invitation was announced on Raw this week, allowing for a limited amount of crossover between the Raw and SmackDown brands.

It was first announced on WWE Backstage this week that the Intercontinental title has been declared vacant. Sami Zayn was the Intercontinental Champion prior to that announcement. Zayn hasn’t appeared on WWE television since he retained the Intercontinental title against Bryan at WrestleMania 36.

WWE Intercontinental title declared vacant, tournament to be held

The WWE Intercontinental title is officially vacant.

It was announced on WWE Backstage tonight that Sami Zayn, the current champion, is “unable to compete”. As a result, a tournament will be held on SmackDown, which was taped today but will air on Friday night.

On Monday. it was reported by Post Wrestling that the WWE would be addressing the championship situation later in the week. Zayn hasn’t appeared on WWE television since retaining the championship during the first night of WrestleMania 36.

Zayn had held the championship for 66 days, defeating Braun Strowman at the Elimination Chamber event on March 8. He was last seen retaining the championship against Daniel Bryan following interference from Shinsuke Nakamura and Cesaro.

Also announced for SmackDown is an appearance by NXT Women’s champion Charlotte Flair. There will also be Miz TV with special guest Otis, who won the Money in the Bank ladder match this past Sunday.

Sami Zayn wins Intercontinental title at WWE Elimination Chamber

Sami Zayn is the new Intercontinental champion.

Zayn pinned Braun Strowman tonight at Elimination Chamber in a 3 on 1 handicap match for the Intercontinental title that also included Shinsuke Nakamura and Cesaro. After being posted, Strowman was held up by Nakamura and Cesaro in the suplex position. Zayn then finished off Strowman with the helluva kick.

Strowman only held the championship for 37 days, defeating Nakamura on the January 31 edition of SmackDown. This is Zayn’s first championship win on the main roster.

Originally scheduled to be a rematch between Nakamura and Strowman, it was changed to a handicap match during a contract signing on SmackDown last week. After saying he might as well face all three men in the same match, Zayn challenged him to a handicap match. Strowman ended up agreeing.

Zayn has only wrestled sporadically in recent months, positioning himself more as a manager for Cesaro and Nakamura. He last wrestled on television back in December, teaming with Cesaro and Nakamura in a losing effort to The New Day and Strowman.

Braun Strowman wins WWE Intercontinental title

Braun Strowman’s first singles title reign began on tonight’s episode of SmackDown.

Strowman defeated Shinsuke Nakamura on the show to win the Intercontinental Championship. Sami Zayn and Cesaro got involved in the match, with Zayn exposing one of the top turnbuckles. But Strowman sent Nakamura into the turnbuckle instead and pinned him after hitting a powerslam.

Nakamura and Strowman have been feuding with each other since before the Royal Rumble. Strowman issued a challenge to Nakamura after defeating him in a non-title match earlier this month, but Zayn said Nakamura was focused on the Rumble.

After Nakamura lost the Intercontinental title tonight, there was a segment where Elias playing his guitar in the ring kept interrupting Zayn, Nakamura, and Cesaro’s backstage interview. It led to Elias getting the better of a brawl with Cesaro after Cesaro came down to the ring.

Nakamura had been Intercontinental Champion since winning the title from Finn Balor on the Extreme Rules pre-show in July 2019.

Strowman has previously been a Raw Tag Team Champion twice, briefly holding the titles with Nicholas and Seth Rollins.

Roman Reigns to challenge for IC title on WWE SmackDown

Roman Reigns is getting an Intercontinental title shot on SmackDown this week.

WWE has announced that Intercontinental Champion Shinsuke Nakamura (w/ Sami Zayn) will defend his title against Reigns on tomorrow’s SmackDown. The episode is taking place at the Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana.

The match was set up via tweets from Zayn and Reigns. Zayn wrote: “Nakamura-san & I were eligible to be drafted together & got picked in the 3rd round by #Smackdown. Imagine being able to get a generation-defining performer AND the Intercontinental Champion together in one pick & still deciding to pick The Big D Roman Reigns first. Unreal. – SZ”

Reigns then responded: “Don’t concern yourself with the Big D Sami [laughing emoji] but if you and Shin want to go from 3rd round to face #1…you know where to find me. And bring the #ICTitle with you. #BigDog #BigDeal #SmackDown”

Nakamura became Intercontinental Champion by defeating Finn Balor for the title on the Extreme Rules pre-show this July.

Reigns has held the Intercontinental title once in his career. He won it in November 2017 and lost it in January 2018.

Intercontinental title changes hands on WWE Raw

A title change took place on this week’s episode of Raw.

Bobby Lashley defeated Finn Balor to win the Intercontinental Championship. This is Lashley’s second reign with the title. He won it from Dean Ambrose on the January 14 episode of Raw and then dropped it to Balor at Elimination Chamber, though Balor pinned Lio Rush in a handicap match to win the championship.

The finish of tonight’s match was Rush distracting Balor as Balor was going for the Coup de Grace. Balor kicked Rush and went for a springboard move on Lashley, but Lashley gave him a spear and mid-air and pinned him to become Intercontinental Champion. Lashley and Rush celebrated together after the match.

Lashley teamed with Baron Corbin & Drew McIntyre in the main event of Fastlane on Sunday night, with them losing to The Shield (Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins & Dean Ambrose). Finn Balor didn’t wrestle at the pay-per-view.

Intercontinental title match set for WWE Money in the Bank

A Intercontinental title match has been set for Money in the Bank.

Seth Rollins’ next challenger is Elias, which was confirmed today on WWE’s social media. The feud between the two started this past Monday when Elias came out to perform and wouldn’t leave. Rollins, who had a title match against Jinder Mahal, forced him out by throwing his stool to the outside.

Rollins was disqualified in the match after hitting Mahal with a steel chair. As he posed on top of the announcer’s table, Elias came in and smashed Rollins in the back with a guitar. Rollins took a bump to the floor and a stretcher came out. Despite being put in a neck brace, Rollins refused to be stretchered out. He got up under his own power from the stretcher and left.

Money in the Bank will take place on June 17 at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois.
