MLW crowns inaugural Women’s Featherweight Champion

The first Women’s Champion in MLW history was crowned at a set of television tapings on Friday night.

Taya Valkyrie defeated Holidead at Kings of Colosseum on Friday to become the inaugural MLW Women’s Featherweight Champion. The match will air on a future episode of MLW Fusion.

Kings of Colosseum was the first time Valkyrie has appeared for MLW since 2018. In addition to winning the Women’s Featherweight Championship, Valkyrie also took part in a trios match. Valkyrie, Lince Dorado & Microman defeated Holidead, Arez & Mini Abismo Negro.

Valkyrie is also the current AAA Reina de Reinas Champion. She won that title from Deonna Purrazzo at Impact Wrestling’s Rebellion pay-per-view last month.

Valkyrie was formerly known as Franky Monet in NXT. She was released by WWE last November.

The MLW women’s featherweight division first launched in September 2021. MLW has stated that it plans to have multiple women’s weight classes in the future.

“MLW plans on having multiple women’s [divisions],” the promotion wrote. “Like the men with the heavyweight and middleweight divisions, the women’s featherweight division promises to showcase the best and promote fair fights in stature between fighters of similar attributes.”

Chik Tormenta to make MLW debut at Azteca Underground tapings

A debut is set for MLW’s Azteca Underground tapings in Dallas.

It was announced on Wednesday that Chik Tormenta will make her MLW debut against Holidead in a women’s featherweight division match at the Azteca Underground tapings. The show is being held at Gilley’s Dallas on April 1, which is the Friday of WrestleMania week.

Tormenta currently holds the Lucha Libre AAA World Mixed Tag Team titles with Arez.

MLW wrote about the match:

Cesar Duran has signed a women’s featherweight division clash: Chik Tormenta vs. Holidead for Friday, April 1 at Cesar Duran’s MLW AZTECA UNDERGROUND hosted by Gilley’s in Downtown Dallas with a special 2pm matinee, featuring an MLW Fusion TV taping and interactive experience.

The current AAA Mixed Tag Team Champion, the masked Chik Tormenta is considered the preeminent luchadora in Mexico. With a breathtaking arsenal of air attacks, including a double knee from the top rope onto her adversary’s chest but look out for her array of suplexes: all devastating.

A member of the notorious Los Nuevos Vipers in Mexico, Chik now looks to make her mark in Cesar’s cathedral of violence on April 1 at MLW AZTECA Underground. The question: is she ready for Holidead?

An unpredictable force since debuting last year, Holidead has stretchered opponents and defeated all in her path. Aligned with Arez and rumored to be a member of the Strange Sangre movement, Holidead sees this match as her proving ground to show Cesar Duran she should be in the mix for the featherweight championship.

Will Chik Tormenta walk all over Holidead en route to a perfect debut? Will Holidead remain undefeated? Find out April 1st in Dallas Cesar Duran presents MLW AZTECA UNDERGROUND!

Three entrants added to ROH Women’s title tournament

All but one of the entrants for ROH’s Women’s World Championship tournament have now been revealed.

ROH has announced that Sumie Sakai, Holidead, and Marti Belle will be participants in this summer’s Women’s World Championship tournament. Sakai was presented with a Ticket to Gold by Maria Kanellis-Bennett on this week’s Women’s Division Wednesday episode, granting her a spot in the tournament. Kanellis-Bennett then presented Holidead and Belle with Tickets to Gold in a video that ROH uploaded on Thursday night.

Allie Recks was also going to be given a Ticket to Gold by Kanellis-Bennett on this week’s Women’s Division Wednesday, but Recks is unable to compete in the tournament due to undergoing knee surgery. Recks said she’ll be out of action for 8-9 months.

Sakai competed in ROH’s first-ever women’s match in 2002 and became the first Women of Honor World Champion in 2018.

Holidead has regularly teamed with Thunder Rosa as The Twisted Sisterz during her career. She made her AEW Dark debut on last week’s episode and has wrestled for ROH several times previously.

Belle has formerly wrestled for the NWA and TNA/Impact Wrestling. She was also an entrant in WWE’s inaugural Mae Young Classic in 2017. Belle appeared for ROH in 2019 when she unsuccessfully challenged Allysin Kay for the NWA Women’s World Championship.

The ROH Women’s World Championship bracket will be revealed at this Sunday’s Best in the World pay-per-view. The tournament will kick off on ROH TV the weekend of Saturday, July 31.

But before the tournament starts, Quinn McKay will face Mandy Leon on the ROH TV episode that begins airing on Saturday, July 17. If McKay wins, she’ll get the final spot in the tournament.

McKay, who is part of ROH’s broadcast team, lost her first shot to be in the tournament when she was defeated by Angelina Love this May. Leon interfered to help Love win that match. As a stipulation of her win, Love is getting a first-round bye in the tournament.

The ROH Women’s World Championship is a new title that’s replacing the former Women of Honor World Championship. Here’s the updated list of entrants for the title tournament:

  • Rok-C

  • Mazzerati
  • Willow Nightingale
  • Nicole Savoy
