IWGP World title match official for NJPW 53rd Anniversary show main event

New IWGP World Heavyweight Champion Hirooki Goto officially has a date and an opponent for his first title defense.

The main event of NJPW’s 53rd Anniversary show on Thursday, March 6 will officially be Goto vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi for the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship. Now confirmed by NJPW, the matchup was proposed by Goto in a backstage promo after his title win at the New Beginning in Osaka. Goto said he wanted to give Tanahashi a shot at the IWGP World title before Tanahashi retires from the ring in January 2026.

More than 20 years into his NJPW career, Goto finally became World Champion by dethroning Zack Sabre Jr. at Tuesday’s New Beginning in Osaka event.

The winner of Goto vs. Tanahashi will defend the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship in the main event of NJPW Sakura Genesis on Saturday, April 5, facing the winner of New Japan Cup 2025.

NJPW’s 53rd Anniversary show is taking place from Ota City Gym in Tokyo and will air live on NJPW World. Here is the full lineup:

  • IWGP World Heavyweight Champion Hirooki Goto defends against Hiroshi Tanahashi
  • IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion El Desperado defends against Francesco Akira
  • Tetsuya Naito, Hiromu Takahashi, Shingo Takagi & Yota Tsuji vs. EVIL, Dick Togo, Yujiro Takahashi & SHO
  • Gabe Kidd & Drilla Moloney vs. Ren Narita & Yoshinobu Kanemaru
  • Taichi, Yuya Uemura & TAKA Michinoku vs. SANADA, Taichi Ishimori & Gedo
  • Ryohei Oiwa & Hartley Jackson vs. Bad Luck Fale & Chase Owens
  • NJPW World TV Championship open challenge: El Phantasmo defends against a mystery opponent

Title challenge issued for NJPW Anniversary show main event

Hirooki Goto is finally IWGP Champion — and he already has an opponent in mind for his first title defense.

More than 20 years since debuting for NJPW, Goto won his first World title by defeating Zack Sabre Jr. at the New Beginning in Osaka. Goto spoke backstage after the match and announced that he wants to defend the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship against Hiroshi Tanahashi at NJPW’s 53rd Anniversary show.

Yuji Nagata also confronted Goto backstage following Tuesday’s event, setting up another future title match if Goto retains against Tanahashi.

NJPW wrote:

There was more drama bnackstage though, as Goto vowed to ‘keep this revolution going.’ Goto said that he wanted to give Hiroshi Tanahashi one last title challenge before the Ace retires, suggesting March 6 and Anniversary as the spot. Yuji Nagata also wanted his first challenge in ten years, a challenge Goto granted if he retains; as Goto promised to ‘show the young generation how it’s done,’ what is to come?

The 48-year-old Tanahashi is retiring from the ring in January 2026. One of the biggest stars in NJPW history, he’s held the IWGP Heavyweight title eight times.

Tanahashi is also the president of NJPW, having been appointed to that key behind-the-scenes role in December 2023.

The Anniversary event is taking place from Ota City Gymnasium in Tokyo on Thursday, March 6. The only match that’s been confirmed so far is El Desperado vs. Francesco Akira for the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship.

United Japan Pro Wrestling incorporates, outlines future goals

United Japan Pro Wrestling is now an officially incorporated organization.

Formed in late 2023, the UJPW is an association of wrestling promotions in Japan that include NJPW, NOAH, Stardom, AJPW, Big Japan, DDT, Dragongate, and more. The organization’s goals are “to further the presence of pro-wrestling and its cultural merit in Japanese society at large, allow professional wrestling to contribute further to cultural and sporting sectors, and work toward continued health and prosperity of the industry.”

UJPW held a press conference on Monday to announce its new legal designation, stating that being an incorporated entity “strengthens governance and enhances public transparency” of the organization and widens the scope of what it can do.

DDT Founder Sanshiro Takagi chaired the meeting and laid out the four core goals of the group moving forward:

  • Introduce more people to professional wrestling.
  • Elevating wrestling’s status in society
    • A core tenet of this will be charitable activities, such as the event last May to raise money for Noto earthquake survivors.
  • To introduce the world to the “unique culture of Japanese pro wrestling” and use this to drive tourism to Japan
  • “Expanding the marketplace” to double the size of the industry over the next 10 years

Takagi also announced today that relaxed rules regarding new members of UJPW will be announced shortly. Prior requirements regarding a minimum total annual revenue will be waived for new member organizations.

The seven requirements to join UJPW:

  • an organization to be a regularly running, active promotion in Japan.
  • to be a legally recognised company
  • to have at least one contracted wrestler working for them
  • to have annual revenue of at least 50 million Yen
  • to have been established for at least two years
  • to have a corporate compliance system in place for wrestlers and staff
  • to share in a vision of betterment for the pro-wrestling space at large even in competition with other members.

UJPW held two events in 2024: All Together Earthquake Benefit at the Nippon Budokan in May and All Together Sapporo at the Hokkaido Prefectural Sports Center in June.

Representatives from multiple member organizations spoke at the press conference regarding their hopes for United Japan Pro Wrestling.

Dragongate’s Ryo Saito:

“Wrestling has supported the best fans in Japan for 70 years, but there are still a lot of people who have a negative image of pro-wrestling. One of the missions of this association is to remove all the barriers to pro-wrestling and take away any negative or intimidating impression that wrestling has. Wrestlers and staff have an important responsibility to take to heart, including for a smaller organization like DRAGONGATE to grow the image of pro-wrestling among the populace, and to make it a stable and attractive industry in which to work.”

NJPW’s Shota Umino:

“We have had All Together events up to now, and I would love to further the pro-wrestling space in the future, as well as to do whatever I can through pro-wrestling to support the people of Japan. I hope we’re pro-active as a group and work together to bring people strength, especially in the wake of disasters or other challenges the country may face.”

NJPW’s Hiroshi Tanahashi:

“I fell in love with pro-wrestling at a young age, and have been driven and energised it for all that time. Wherever they may be, the knowledge of people fighting for them is something that inspires so many. I’m on my final countdown right now, but I hope that perhaps I can make appearances in the other members of this association before I retire.”

Cyberfight’s Narihiro Takeda quickly responded to Tanahashi’s comments, perhaps sensing an opportunity:

“Tanahashi said that he would like to wrestle in the other members of this association, so on behalf of Cyberfight i would like to facilitate that, as well as gladly discuss any ideas and contribute where we can.”

Bushiroad CEO Takaaki Kidani spoke about how Antonio Inoki inspired him to get into wrestling.

“This June I will turn 65. I first encountered pro-wrestling in junior high, so 50 years now. I didn’t enjoy my life in school back then, and didn’t have much to look forward to. But what drove me to go on to do what I did in life came in large part, maybe the most part from Antonio Inoki. Pro-Wrestling culture, inspiration, entertainment is something that I dearly hope can be brought to inspire more people, and that’s why I’m proud to be here today.”

Tanahashi vs. Takeshita official for NJPW Windy City Riot

Hiroshi Tanahashi will indeed meet Konosuke Takeshita in what is being billed as “The Ace’s” final match in the United States.

NJPW officially announced the first matches for its Friday, April 11 Windy City Riot event in Chicago, including Tanahashi vs. Takeshita. The match was first teased at last Saturday’s Battle in the Valley event, with Takeshita issuing a challenge to Tanahashi. NJPW confirmed the bout in a post on its website Wednesday night.

Tanahashi, who also serves as NJPW president, has announced his retirement, with his final bout currently slated for Wrestle Kingdom 20 in the Tokyo Dome next January.

Also official for Chicago, Gabe Kidd will defend the NJPW Strong Openweight Championship against Tomohiro Ishii in a 30-minute Ironman match.

Similarly, Kidd issued the challenge to Ishii at Battle in the Valley after the two opened the main card with a time limit draw, and the match was confirmed Wednesday.

The NJPW Windy City Riot card for Friday, April 11:

  • Hiroshi Tanahashi’s US farewell match: Hiroshi Tanahashi vs Konosuke Takeshita
  • NJPW Strong Openweight Champion Gabe Kidd defends against Tomohiro Ishii in a 30-minute Ironman match

Konosuke Takeshita, Gabe Kidd issues challenges for NJPW Windy City Riot

Takeshita wants Tanahashi and Kidd wants Ishii, again.

After successfully defending the NEVER Openweight title against KUSHIDA at Saturday’s NJPW Battle in the Valley, Konosuke Takeshita issued the challenge to Hiroshi Tanahashi for Windy City Riot on April 11 in Chicago.

The event will be Tanahashi’s final match in the United States prior to his retirement next January at Wrestle Kingdom 20. Takeshita told Tanahashi that it would be the end of “Ace” as he will show him the “Alpha.”

At Wrestle Kingdom 19, the AEW International Champion defeated Shingo Takagi to win the NEVER Openweight title, becoming a double champion. After that match, it was announced that he was now affiliated with NJPW, representing them as well as AEW and DDT.

Another challenge was issued earlier in the show as NJPW Strong Openweight Champion Gabe Kidd and Tomohiro Ishii went to a 30-minute time limit draw.

After the match, Kidd challenged Ishii to a 30 minute Iron Man match for Windy City Riot. Ishii responded by getting into a slap exchange with Kidd that eventually had to be broken up by officials.

NJPW announces international schedule for 2025, date for Hiroshi Tanahashi’s final US match

Hiroshi Tanahashi’s last match in the United States has a date.

NJPW announced via video that following Battle in the Valley on January 11, Windy City Riot will take place on April 11 in Chicago at the Wintrust Arena. It was announced that Hiroshi Tanahashi’s final match in the United States will take place at this event.

Two new events were also announced. A Stardom show will take place mid April in Las Vegas, which will also be the location of WrestleMania 41 that same month. New Japan Resurgence was also announced, taking place on May 9 at the Toyota Arena in Ontario, California. The already announced AEW/NJPW Forbidden Door event was also mentioned, taking place in London on August 25.

Battle in the Valley will have Gabe Kidd defending the NJPW Strong Openweight title against Tomohiro Isihi, The West Coast Wrecking Crew defending the NJPW Strong Tag Team titles against Roppongi ReVice, and Sumie Sakai’s retirement match, which will see her team with EVIL and SHO against Hiromu Takahashi, Mayu Iwatani, and Yuka Sakazaki.

AEW wrestler challenges Hiroshi Tanahashi for Wrestle Dynasty

Katsuyori Shibata is wrestling at Wrestle Dynasty.

In a surprise appearance on Saturday, Shibata ran in for the save after EVIL and the rest of House of Torture attacked Hiroshi Tanahashi following their match. Shibata ran them off and helped Tanahashi to his feet. He asked for a match tomorrow at Wrestle Dynasty. Tanahashi accepted, setting up the bout.

Shibata has not wrestled for NJPW in exactly three years. His last match for the company was at Wrestle Kingdom 16, when he defeated Ren Narita in a singles match. The following year, he signed with AEW where he has been a regular since, previously holding the ROH Pure Championship.

Tanahashi wrestled EVIL in a lumberjack match on Saturday. Despite interference from the rest of House of Torture, Tanahashi managed to pick up the win by cradling EVIL as he was looking for a pin after hitting Tanahashi with his finishing move twice.

Here is the updated lineup for Wrestle Dynasty:

  • Kenny Omega vs. Gabe Kidd
  • Zack Sabre Jr. vs. Ricochet
  • Shota Umino vs. Claudio Castagnoli
  • David Finlay vs. Brody King
  • Yota Tsuji vs. Jack Perry
  • NEVER Championship: Either Shingo Takagi or Konosuke Takeshita defends against Tomohiro Ishii. Will be a double title match if Takeshita remains AEW International Champion on January 4
  • Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Katsuyori Shibata
  • IWGP Tag Team titles: Great-O-Khan & a mystery partner vs. The Young Bucks
  • NJPW Strong Women’s & RPW Undisputed Women’s British double title match: Mercedes Mone vs. Mina Shirakawa
  • Lucha gauntlet match featuring CMLL and NJPW talent
  • Kickoff match for ROH Tag Team titles: Dustin Rhodes & Sammy Guevara defend against Yoshinobu Kanemaru & SHO
  • Kickoff match for the Women’s International Cup: Persephone (CMLL) Vs. Momo Watanabe (Stardom) vs. Willow Nightingale (NJPW) vs. Athena (ROH)

Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. EVIL official for NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 19

The first match is official for NJPW’s biggest show of the year in the Tokyo Dome on January 4, 2025.

After all-time great and company president Hiroshi Tanahashi was challenged to a Wrestle Kingdom bout by EVIL earlier this week, NJPW has officially announced the bout in a website post and news release.

At King of Pro-Wrestling earlier this month, Tanahashi made the surprise announcement that he will be stepping away from the ring effective January 4, 2026 with his retirement match planned for Wrestle Kingdom 20. EVIL then stated his intention to retire “The Ace” ahead of time and threw down the gauntlet for the Tokyo Dome.

The Wrestle Kingdom 19 lineup remains in flux after the 2024 G1 Climax winner Zack Sabre Jr. cashed in his IWGP World Heavyweight title shot at KOPW instead of waiting for the Tokyo Dome and Wrestle Kingdom as has been tradition.

The Wrestle Dynasty event on January 5 also set for the Tokyo Dome further clouds the forecast for the Wrestle Kingdom card, as all of NJPW’s partner promotions being included in that event opens the possibility of a lot of interpromotional dream matches.

The card so far for NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 19 set for Saturday, January 4, 2025:

  • Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. EVIL

EVIL challenges Hiroshi Tanahashi for NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 19

EVIL and Hiroshi Tanahashi will do battle at Wrestle Kingdom 19.

At the end of Tanahashi’s press conference on Tuesday regarding his upcoming retirement, EVIL made a surprise appearance and confronted Tanahashi. The House of Torture leader told Tanahashi that NJPW is his company, and he will tell Tanahashi when he retires, and it will be on January 4, 2025. Tanahashi responded by saying that beating EVIL at the Tokyo Dome would not only be the best start to 2025 but also the best start to his retirement road.

Tanahashi announced his retirement at Power Struggle last weekend, saying his last match will take place at Wrestle Kingdom 20 on January 4, 2026. After his announcement, EVIL and the rest of House of Torture ambushed Tanahashi, with EVIL declaring that he would be the one to say when Tanahashi’s career ends.

During the press conference, Tanahashi cited his physical condition as to why he’s retiring, noting issues with his knees and abs, as well as his new position of NJPW’s president, saying he would transition into a full-time office role following his retirement.

He also expressed wrestling singles matches with everyone on NJPW’s roster, from established stars to the young lions. He also has an interest in wrestling Katsuyori Shibata and Shinsuke Nakamura.

“They’re rivals I came up with,” he said. “There are a lot of hurdles to overcome with those people, but we’ll see.”

Tanahashi also hoped for a happy retirement when the time comes in 2026.

“I’ve seen a lot of retirements, been there for a lot of them,” he said. “I always cry at retirements, but I really want to leave the ring behind with a smile on my face.”

Hiroshi Tanahashi to retire in 2026, reveals date of final NJPW match

Hiroshi Tanahashi has revealed when his wrestling career will come to an end.

During today’s NJPW King of Pro Wrestling, Tanahashi marked his 25th anniversary in wrestling by teaming with Shota Umino and El Phantasmo to defeat House of Torture’s EVIL, Yoshinobu Kanemaru, and Yujiro Takahashi. After the match, he announced that his final bout will take place on January 4, 2026, at The Tokyo Dome.

Tanahashi promised to give everything he has until then. He was then ambushed by House of Torture, with EVIL standing over him and declaring that he will be the one to decide when Tanahashi’s career ends.

The 47-year-old made his debut in October 1999. He was one of “The New Three Musketeers” along with Shinsuke Nakamura and Katsuyori Shibata.

Tanahashi was voted into the Wrestling Observer Newsletter Hall of Fame Class of 2013. He won the Wrestler of the Decade for the 2010s, was Wrestler of the Year each year from 2011-2013, Most Outstanding Wrestling from 2012-13, his feud vs. Kazuchika Okada was the Feud of the Year from 2012-13, and he won Match of the Year awards in 2012 (vs. Minoru Suzuki), 2013 (vs. Kazuchika Okada), and 2016 (vs. Okada).

Though his in-ring career is approaching its end, Tanahashi should remain a pivotal figure behind the scenes in NJPW. He’s been the president of NJPW since December 2023.

Live coverage of today’s NJPW King of Pro Wrestling event in Tokyo is available here.

Kenny Omega would ‘absolutely love’ to compete at Wrestle Dynasty

AEW star Kenny Omega would love to be able to compete at Wrestle Dynasty in January 2025.

For nearly a year now, Omega has been out of action following a life-threatening bout with diverticulitis. He underwent surgery this May and has been working toward a return, including recently training in the ring with Kota Ibushi in Japan, but is not cleared yet.

Omega also met up with a former NJPW rival — Hiroshi Tanahashi — while in Japan. NJPW produced a video with them reuniting and discussing their Wrestle Kingdom match from 2019. During the conversation, Omega discussed a potential return to action.

“If they cleared me tomorrow, I would be back in the ring,” Omega said. “There’s a lot I don’t know right now, but I’d absolutely love to be on a stage like Wrestle Dynasty.”

Wrestle Dynasty is being held at the Tokyo Dome on Sunday, January 5, 2025 and will feature talent from NJPW, AEW, Stardom, ROH, and CMLL. It’s taking place the night after NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 19.

When Omega is able to wrestle again, he’ll be feuding with The Elite. Omega and Tanahashi teased potentially joining forces for a tag team match against The Young Bucks. While speaking in character, Omega said he doesn’t want young fans to remember him as the heel he used to be.

“First priority is making my return,” Omega said, “But if I can come back, I do want to face the Bucks. I want revenge, but more importantly, I want to do it the right way. The first time Tanahashi and I wrestled, it was for the belt, and then in 2019 it was a lot on the line for the both of us. Now, with the two of us aligned, next time we wrestle, I’d want to do it together. I’ve been a bad guy for a lot of my time, especially in AEW. I cheated to win the AEW title. I don’t want that to be the memory of myself that stays with young fans. If Tanahashi and I meet in that ring again, I’d want to do it as his partner.”

Tanahashi — who is the president of NJPW — mentioned that he would love for Omega to face some of the younger NJPW wrestlers and see how good they are.

NJPW releases teaser for Kenny Omega-Hiroshi Tanahashi meeting

NJPW has released a teaser for a new video featuring a meeting between NJPW president Hiroshi Tanahashi and Kenny Omega.

In a social media post late Wednesday, NJPW unveiled a trailer for a video titled “Hiroshi Tanahashi X Kenny Omega Reunion,” with a “coming soon” tag:

The video plays off the real-life history between the two, noting that Tanahashi and Omega squared off in the Wrestle Kingdom main event in 2019 in what would be Omega’s final match as a full-time member of the NJPW roster. Tanahashi defeated Omega to win the IWGP Heavyweight Championship in the match as Omega was on his way to AEW.

The social media post used a Wrestle Dynasty hashtag, perhaps hinting at Omega’s involvement in that event set for January 5, 2025 in the Tokyo Dome. NJPW, CMLL, AEW, ROH, and Stardom will all have a presence on the Wrestle Dynasty show.

Omega is currently out of action after undergoing surgery to treat a life-threatening bout with diverticulitis.

Strong Tag Team title match set for NJPW Royal Quest IV

The next challengers for the New Japan Strong Tag Team titles have been set.

Hiroshi Tanahashi & Tomohiro Ishii won a three-way tag team match to open Friday’s NJPW Capital Collision event in Washington DC. They defeated TMDK’s Bad Dude Tito & Robbie Eagles and The Grizzled Young Veterans after the duo isolated Tito, allowing Tanahashi to hit the high fly flow for the win.

Later in the show, champions Shane Haste & Mikey Nicholls retained the titles, defeating CMLL’s Hechicero and Virus. After the match, the new number one contenders came to the ring. Tanahashi announced that they wanted their tag team title match at Royal Quest on October 20 in London, and as the president of NJPW, he can make it official. TMDK ended up accepting their challenge.

TMDK have held the titles since June 9, when they defeated Kenta & Chase Owens and Bishamon (Hirooki Goto & YOSHI-HASHI) at Dominion to win both the NJPW Strong and IWGP Tag Team titles.

The current card for NJPW Royal Quest:

  • NJPW Strong Tag Team titles: TMDK defend against Hiroshi Tanahashi & Tomohiro Ishii

NJPW reveals IWGP Committee members

NJPW has named five members to its IWGP Committee, a group that oversees championship matches and tournaments in the promotion.

The restructured group was announced by NJPW President Hiroshi Tanahashi at the company’s pre-G1 Climax press conference. Tanahashi said that, while the committee has always been a vague concept to fans, he wants the audience to understand more about it. The committee will consist of the following five people:

  • Former IWGP Champion Yuji Nagata
  • NJPW legend Jushin Thunder Liger
  • Former referee Tiger Hattori
  • NJPW Chairman Naoki Sugabayashi
  • NJPW board member Hitoshi Matsumoto

Tanahashi said the committee members will work closely with NJPW’s wrestlers and referees. There is no committee president, but group members “will attend various events and be on hand whenever required for decisions in [the] future.”

In December of last year, Tanahashi was named the new president of NJPW. He still competes in the ring but isn’t part of NJPW’s G1 Climax this year, marking the first time he hasn’t been in the tournament since 2001. Tanahashi lost to Oleg Boltin in NJPW’s G1 qualifier tournament.

The Elite vs. The Acclaimed & Hiroshi Tanahashi added to AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door

Two new matches have been added to Forbidden Door.

Hiroshi Tanahashi will team with The Acclaimed to take on The Elite (The Young Bucks & Kazuchika Okada). After The Elite challenged The Acclaimed to a trios match, Billy Gunn said while he’d like to team up with The Acclaimed, he happened to know a president. That is when Tanahashi appeared on the video screen and announced he’d team with Max Caster & Anthony Bowens this Sunday.

This would be the first time Okada and Tanahashi have faced off since Okada’s departure from NJPW earlier this year.

Willow Nightingale and Tam Nakano will team up on Sunday, taking on Kris Statlander and Momo Watanabe. In a video, Statlander challenged Nightingale to a warm up match ahead of their Owen Hart Foundation tournament bout on next Wednesday’s Dynamite. The match was later confirmed for Forbidden Door’s Zero Hour pre-show.

It was also announced on Dynamite that Bryan Keith will not be wrestling at Forbidden Door after suffering an injury. Jericho attempted to recruit Minoru Suzuki into being part of his trios team, but Suzuki rejected the offer and instead challenged Jericho to an FTW title match. It was explained on social media that the trios match between The Learning Tree and Hook, Katsuyori Shibata, and Samoa Joe at Forbidden Door is still on, but Jericho needs to find a new partner.

Here is the updated lineup for Forbidden Door:

  • AEW World Champion Swerve Strickland defends against Will Ospreay
  • Ladder match for the vacant TNT Championship: Konosuke Takeshita vs. Mark Briscoe vs. Jack Perry vs. Lio Rush vs. Dante Martin vs. TBA
  • Title for title: TBS Champion Mercedes Mone vs. NJPW Strong Women’s Champion Stephanie Vaquer
  • AEW Women’s Championship: Toni Storm defends against Mina Shirakawa
  • IWGP World Heavyweight title: Jon Moxley defends against Tetsuya Naito
  • Owen Hart Foundation men’s quarterfinal match: Bryan Danielson vs. Shingo Takagi
  • MJF vs. Hechicero
  • Zack Sabre Jr. vs. Orange Cassidy
  • The Elite (Kazuchika Okada & The Young Bucks) vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi & The Acclaimed
  • The Learning Tree (Chris Jericho, Big Bill, and TBA) vs. Samoa Joe, Hook, and Katsuyori Shibata
  • Zero Hour: Kris Statlander & Momo Watanabe vs. Willow Nightingale & Tam Nakano
