Iron Man match for Intercontinental title set for WWE Extreme Rules

Another match between Dolph Ziggler and Seth Rollins has been set, this time for Extreme Rules.

Kurt Angle made the announcement this afternoon on his Twitter account.

“@HEELZiggler and @WWERollins are two of the best competitors on #Raw…and they’ll have their opportunity to see who’s better at #ExtremeRules… in a 30-minute #IronMan Match for the #ICTitle” he tweeted.

Their feud started two weeks ago on Raw when Ziggler defeated Rollins to win the title. Drew McIntyre, Ziggler’s tag team partner got involved. Ziggler went for a roll up, which Rollins countered with one of his own. He went for another, but Ziggler grabbed the tights and won the title.

The rematch, which took place last week, ended when McIntyre dragged the referee to the floor and attacked Rollins, causing a DQ. Roman Reigns came in to even things up, forming a mini Shield reunion to close out the show.

Extreme Rules will take place July 15 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania at the PPG Paints Arena.

Ronda Rousey appearance confirmed for WWE Extreme Rules

Despite being suspended for 30 days in storyline, it looks like Ronda Rousey will be making an on-camera appearance at Extreme Rules after all.

WWE posted video of a brief sit-down interview with Rousey today where Rousey said she’d be in attendance for Alexa Bliss’ Raw Women’s Championship defense against Nia Jax at the pay-per-view. “Even though I’m suspended from Raw, I’m not suspended from Extreme Rules,” Rousey said. “So, I’m going to be buying a ticket. It’s going to be a front row ticket.”

Rousey’s storyline suspension began on the June 18 episode of Raw following an angle where she went on a rampage, attacking Bliss, Kurt Angle, and referees. The attack was revenge for Bliss cashing in her briefcase during Jax vs. Rousey at Money in the Bank and then mocking Rousey on Raw.

Rousey will also be in action at this weekend’s house shows in Philadelphia, New York City (Madison Square Garden), and Bridgeport.

Extreme Rules is taking place at the PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh on July 15.

Two more title matches added to WWE Extreme Rules card

The card for Extreme Rules continued to take shape on tonight’s SmackDown.

Two more title matches were announced for the July 15 pay-per-view. Daniel Bryan will team with the returning Kane to challenge for The Bludgeon Brothers’ SmackDown Tag Team titles, while Carmella will again defend her Women’s Championship against Asuka.

Kane returned to television tonight for the first time since becoming the Republican candidate for mayor of Knox County, Tennessee. He made the save and helped even the odds against The Bludgeon Brothers after Bryan defeated Harper by disqualification in this week’s main event. Bryan and Kane hugged, reuniting their Team Hell No duo. Paige then announced the title match for Extreme Rules.

Paige also made Carmella vs. Asuka for the PPV. In the lead-up to the event, Asuka will face James Ellsworth on next week’s episode of SmackDown.

Here’s the updated card for Extreme Rules:

  • WWE Champion AJ Styles defending against Rusev
  • Raw Women’s Champion Alexa Bliss defending against Nia Jax
  • SmackDown Women’s Champion Carmella defending against Asuka
  • SmackDown Tag Team Champions The Bludgeon Brothers (Harper & Rowan) defending against Daniel Bryan & Kane
  • Raw Tag Team Champions Matt Hardy & Bray Wyatt defending against The B-Team (Curtis Axel & Bo Dallas)

Raw Tag Team title match set for WWE Extreme Rules

After being set up as the next challengers prior to Money in the Bank, The B-Team (Curtis Axel & Bo Dallas) will finally get their Raw Tag Team title shot at next month’s pay-per-view.

Matt Hardy & Bray Wyatt defending their titles against Axel & Dallas was confirmed for Extreme Rules on tonight’s Raw. Axel & Dallas won a number one contender’s tag team battle royal on the June 4 episode of the show to earn the title shot.

Axel countered a superplex into a crossbody to defeat Hardy in a singles match this week. Hardy and Wyatt then applauded Axel, with the storyline being that The B-Team didn’t know what to make of them.

Extreme Rules is taking place at the PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on July 15. As of now, WWE Champion AJ Styles defending against Rusev and Nia Jax challenging for Alexa Bliss’ Raw Women’s Championship are the only other matches officially announced for the PPV.

Multi-man match ‘no longer on the table’ for WWE Extreme Rules

The multi-man number one contender’s match that had previously been announced for Extreme Rules apparently won’t be happening.

Tonight’s Raw opened with a segment where WWE had Kurt Angle announce that, due to a storyline where there was a snag in negotiations with Universal Champion Brock Lesnar, the match to decide Lesnar’s next challenger was — at least for now — no longer on the table. A singles match between Roman Reigns and Bobby Lashley, who were the only two wrestlers confirmed for the multi-man, was instead teased.

Reigns & Lashley lost a tag team match to The Revival, with tension between them leading to Dash Wilder rolling up Reigns. Reigns also appeared later in the show and helped Seth Rollins even the odds against Dolph Ziggler and Drew McIntyre.

Paul Heyman continued the angle with Lesnar over the weekend, writing a Facebook post where he said Lesnar was going to focus on “more pressing, ‘Ultimate’ opportunities” until someone proves that they’re worthy of challenging for the Universal title.

There will be two more episodes of Raw building to Extreme Rules before the pay-per-view takes place on July 15.

AJ Styles vs. Rusev title match set for WWE Extreme Rules

SmackDown has its main event for next month’s Extreme Rules pay-per-view.

Rusev won a number one contender’s gauntlet match on SmackDown tonight and will be challenging for AJ Styles’ WWE Championship at Extreme Rules. Rusev entered the gauntlet last before submitting The Miz to win.

Styles came into the ring after the match and shook hands with Rusev. Aiden English then extended his hand to Styles until pulling it back and mocking him. Styles laid out English to close the show.

The story for much of the gauntlet revolved around Daniel Bryan. He entered first, with his entrance interrupting The Bludgeon Brothers, who had just retained their SmackDown Tag Team titles against Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson. Bryan defeated Big E, beat Samoa Joe by countout, and then was attacked by Harper & Rowan before losing to Miz.

Extreme Rules is taking place at the PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on July 15. Here’s the updated card:

  • WWE Champion AJ Styles defending against Rusev
  • Number one contender’s match for a future shot at Universal Champion Brock Lesnar (Roman Reigns and Bobby Lashley already confirmed)
  • Raw Women’s Champion Alexa Bliss defending against Nia Jax

WWE announces Raw’s main event for Extreme Rules

Raw’s main event at Extreme Rules will be a multi-man match to decide Brock Lesnar’s next challenger.

WWE had Kurt Angle announce that news on Raw tonight, with the winner presumably facing Lesnar for the Universal Championship at SummerSlam. Roman Reigns interrupted Angle and called himself the uncrowned champion, Bobby Lashley came out to say Reigns doesn’t have what it takes to beat Lesnar, and Angle said they would both be in the multi-man match.

The Revival interrupted next before being defeated by Reigns & Lashley. Lashley blind-tagged himself in at the finish and won with a spear.

Finn Balor lobbied for one of the other spots in the multi-man in a backstage segment, which resulted in Balor & Braun Strowman vs. Kevin Owens & Baron Corbin being made for tonight. Elias also sang a song about wanting to face Lesnar.

WWE hasn’t confirmed how many other wrestlers will be joining Reigns and Lashley in the multi-man at Extreme Rules or how they’ll be decided on television. The pay-per-view is being held at the PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on July 15.

Alexa Bliss vs. Nia Jax set for WWE Extreme Rules

The first match has been confirmed for next month’s Extreme Rules pay-per-view.

After interrupting Nia Jax vs. Ronda Rousey on Sunday and cashing in her Money in the Bank briefcase to win the Raw Women’s Championship, Alexa Bliss will be defending the title against Jax at Extreme Rules. That was announced by Kurt Angle at the start of tonight’s Raw, with him saying Jax is getting her automatic rematch.

Rousey came out during the segment with Bliss and Angle and went on a rampage after Bliss told her to get to the back of the line and called her an overhyped rookie. Rousey attacked Bliss, then did the same to Angle when he tried to stop her. She laid out referees, put Bliss through a table, and was given a 30-day suspension in storyline.

This will be the third time Bliss and Jax have faced each other on PPV this year. There wasn’t a stipulation announced for the match.

Extreme Rules is taking place at the PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on July 15. It’s WWE’s final PPV before SummerSlam.

WWE Extreme Rules fan feedback

Thumbs in the middle

  • Best: Fatal Five Way
  • Worst: Neville vs. Aries

The good (main event, IC title) was great but the bad (CW title, woman’s title, escape the cage rules) was just awful. On the plus side I’m more excited for Lesnar vs. Joe than I’ve been for a WWE main event in ages.

Thumbs In The Middle

Barely. This was a easy thumbs down show before Neville vs. Aries & the main event.

  • Best Match – Samoa Joe vs. Finn Balor vs. Roman Reigns vs. Seth Rollins vs. Bray Wyatt (Extreme Rules Match)
  • Worst Match – Alexa Bliss vs. Bayley (Kendo Stick-on-a-Pole Match)

Alexa vs. Bayley should really place high in the Worst Match of the Year category during the year end awards. House of Horrors will be more remembered by then but this match was almost equally as stupid. It just had the benefit of being far shorter.

  • Best Match: Samoa Joe vs. Seth Rollins vs. Finn Balor vs. Roman Reigns vs. Bray Wyatt
  • Worst Match: Alexa Bliss vs. Bayley

I have cut way back on my WWE weekly television viewing with no regrets. If I do feel compelled to watch, it’s usually with Spanish commentary, especially in the post-Mauro era. And, mind you, I know almost no Spanish.

The reality is that watching in a language I don’t understand is proving to be a much less vexing way to take in the WWE product of 2017, with the added bonus of the comedy of the Spanish guys trying to translate using voices matching the various characters.

Typically I don’t like the WWE “hardcore” gimmick shows (Extreme Rules and TLC) as much as most, but this one in particular almost completely failed to resonate with me. And while the main event had some crazy spots and hard work, I felt almost no emotional investment in the participants or the product.

It didn’t help that the crowd was dead for the one match I actually cared about in Aries vs. Neville. Plus they did some strange things during that match, like having a DQ count, that took me out of it to a degree.

The best part of the night IMO was Miz on Raw Talk, via Renee Young, reheating the feud with Dean Ambrose that got shelved on SD Live before WM33 when plans changed. And that might be the first positive thing I’ve ever written about Raw Talk.

Hi Dave,

Just wanted to provide some feedback on Extreme Rules. Wow! What an awesome show! Big thumbs up with the best match being the main event Fatal 5 way for a title match and the worst match being Bliss and Bayley for the women’s title.

I was really impressed with this show. This was a great show and a big improvement of the main roster shows as of late, this was really good compared to the previous shows with Payback and Backlash. It was a little shorter than recent shows which is a good thing, less is more in my opinion.
With the network running shows long as of late, it was nice to see a good paced show end at just under 3 hrs. Anything over 3 hrs starts to burn out the crowd and the viewer at home as well. But in regards to timing, it was just about perfect. Now if they could only do this with Raw every week instead of a 3 hr snooze fest, lol! (But seriously, Raw needs to go back to 2 hrs!) But I digress…

Dean vs. Miz – Very good match, good to see Miz win the I/C title. Nothing wrong with Ambrose as champ. But the title seems to be more well served when elevated, and the Miz does an excellent job of that. Keep the title strong and constantly promote it just like the Miz does. With Dean as champ it just seemed like the title was more of a prop and Dean didn’t really emphasize the need to be champion.

Swan / Banks vs. Dar & Fox – This match was ok, nothing great but not bad either. Felt like a weekly Raw match. Good win for Swan and Banks as a team. Good for Swan in getting him over, not sure it really makes a difference for Banks. Was hilarious on the post show segment with Renee Young that Banks actually mentioned that finally someone was allowed to win in their hometown with Swan being from Baltimore, lol.

Bliss vs. Bayley – Um. Less said about this match the better. Not even sure it was a match or what they were trying to do? Seemed like a rushed mess of a match to me. I like both competitors and Alexa Bliss most definitely has the “it” factor, but this match just did not click. Just made Bayley look weak for no reason. I get the point that Bayley is “too nice” but still bad booking.

Hardys vs. Sheamus & Cesaro – Great tag title match in the cage, would have been match of the night if not for the main event. Was really good and just amazing how good the Hardy’s continue to be with both their storytelling in the ring and their match skills. Jeff Hardy is insane. Crazy dive off the cage. A good win and good direction for this feud. Very clever way to get the titles off the Hardy’s and still have them look strong. They shouldn’t lose any momentum from this loss. A good feud will grow with them chasing Cesaro & Sheamus for the tag titles.

C&S have really improved as a team and click really well now, it took awhile. Really hoping the broken Hardy gimmick will be resolved soon and they can utilize it just because it was so different and entertaining. But the direction of the Hardy’s now is just fine.

Fatal 5 way main event – Roman, Bray, Balor, Rollins, Joe – Awesome match! Thought it would be too cluttered with 5 participants in this match since sometimes a fatal 3 way match is difficult to follow. But this was really well paced.

All 5 guys looked strong, they really could have gone with any of the 5 men as a choice to win the match and face Brock for the title and it still would have a good program with Brock. It was an even flow of action, told a good story, some really good shots and crazy bumps. And going with Samoa Joe was an excellent choice for the win since Joe needed a win badly to keep him looking strong in the hunt with some recent defeats making him look a little weak.

I think a match with Brock and Joe would be great, both men are monsters and can have a very physical match. I like the idea of these two facing each other.

Well for once this was a great paced show with great booking except for the women’s title match just not clicking. I enjoyed it and hope that timing on future shows is considered and having shows that run 2 1/2 to 3 hrs for a PPV is just fine. Anything longer then that is really overkill and not needed unless it’s something big like WrestleMania. But a solid outing for this show.

Thumbs Down

  • Best Match: Hardys vs Sheamus and Cesaro
  • Worst Match: Swann and Banks vs. Dar and Fox (but just about everything else was bad too.)

I thought this was quite poor. Watched with 6 other people, and someone fell asleep during the main event, and I had to force myself to pay attention. The Five way was good, I guess, but didn’t seem special or important, and it’s the typical WWE match that felt like it belonged on Raw and not a PPV event.

Hardys match was the best, I thought, because there was intrigue there, but even that was a little inane because with the rules, I don’t understand half of the match, like why Matt didn’t let Sheamus go out and then follow right behind him, or the other multitude of spots.

I think the Bayley Bliss stuff has been awful because they seem intent on just making Bayley a dork, and I guess the feud is going to continue because the stip was that you’re only supposed to use the stick if you got to it first (?) which doesn’t make any sense, but if they want to keep the feud going and not beat Bayley clean (even though they just did) then I guess this is a thing you can do. Same rules question applied to Sasha and Swann vs. Dar and Fox, because I legit asked the room why Banks wasn’t DQed for attacking Dar. Just seemed like a weird, poor show overall with nothing memorable or exciting.

For instance: the Cruiserweight match was well wrestled, but outside of Aries diving onto nothing, I will not be able to tell you anything that happened tomorrow. I legitimately haven’t watched Raw since the super star shakeup, and honestly, I have no desire to watch tomorrow now either.

I hope Brock vs. Joe will be a good program, and maybe they’ll do something interesting, but at this point, with their current track record and the shows they’ve been putting out, I doubt it. They’ve turned people like Nakamura, Bayley and Finn (who’s lost, what, 4 matches since coming back?) from guaranteed money makers into people that are there and given terrible ways to “connect” with the audience.

It’s just sad how uninteresting the product is right now, and how little effort it seems like they’ve put into making anyone feel special, to where the only the best guys like AJ, Owens and Joe even have a prayer of remaining engaging. They don’t seem to want to make anyone over, and the product is just there right now. This wasn’t as bad as Fastlane was, but it wasn’t worth the three hours of my time I spent on it.

Stepping back, Extreme Rules looked destined to fail. Since this PG Era came about, ‘extreme’ has been SEVERELY watered down. The match card even featured a match where the title changes hand by DQ, the very opposite of an ‘extreme’ match.

The highlight, to me, was the Steel Cage match. Seeing Matt & Jeff flying all around the cage and the Whisper In The Wind brought me back to Hardy of 2007. The main event was fine, too. The problem I had was maybe it under delivered overall. I just didn’t feel too excited or felt they did much. Just rehearsed spots.

The ending came as a shock and disappointment. I believed Seth was going to win because people can afford a “One and Done” match between him & Brock. If not him, then definitely Wyatt. NOT Joe. Joe VS Brock is a dream match and should’ve been treated as such by having it drawn out for a long period of time. Instead, it’s going to be a usual squash match for Lesnar.

Overall, it gets harder & harder to watch WWE nowadays. RAW is short one champion, the star is who most people despise (but I think that’s changing), and those two are destined to fight for the title at Mania. What happens between now & April won’t even matter because of that.

So, I’ll just stick with NXT & other promotions. At least they make me smile more than WWE.

– Centrell Hawkins

Thumbs up overall, best match being the main event, a lot of fun. Worst match the women’s purely for how off-putting it was, I literally wanted to just stop watching and go to bed at 3 a.m. after that.

Big fan of Bayley and it was just weird to see her as such an afterthought. This sort of stuff would’ve worked better before she won the title, now it just makes her look bad, I just don’t get it. I don’t want to go and see a movie where the bad guy gets the better of the good guy for 2 hours and then credits. Not even about her losing either, just how throwaway it all was, I dunno. Pointless, but always willing to see if it’ll pan out to something more interesting, but who knows.

I thought Extreme Rules was the drizzling shits. Every match but the main event was below 3 stars while the main event was just barely over 3. They didn’t tell a great story, just a bunch of WWE approved extreme spots. I’m happy that the Miz became Champ but the match itself was horrid, Dean had no heat and seems to be dead in the water creatively. Joe was the worst pick to win the main event. Seth and Roman could have lost to Brock and been fine. Finn and Bray could have lost and possibly turned, or shot an angle and been fine but Joe? He can’t turn babyface or change gimmicks after, he just got here. Joe HAS to win against Brock or he’ll be sharing beers with Ambrose on the totem pole. But it’s the WWE so no confidence.

– Tony Whitaker

**********

Preshow: Kalisto vs Apollo Crews was pretty good.

Miz vs Ambrose was okay, I found the gimmick to be amusing. Ambrose needs to be protected from here on, he’s being wasted in the midcard position.

Banks/Swann vs. Fox/Dar was a match, as Vinny would say. At least the right team won.

Alexa Bliss vs Bayley – HERE WE GO. This was terrible, and I’m seriously wondering, Dave, does Bayley have heat with someone important backstage? My goodness, the stipulation just ended up making Bayley look like such a dork. She was getting boos earlier in the night, too, it was not a good night for her.

Sheamus and Cesaro vs Hardys was a good match. I guess it was about time SheaSaro got one over on the Hardys, but where could the feud go from here? I feel like the Hardys might be going downhill from here on, like the Dudleys in their last return.

Neville beating Aries was disappointing. I’m glad Neville is still doing well, but this loss hurt Aries badly. I guess they’re building towards TJP vs Neville? Anyways, I feel like the crowd wanted to see more high flying out of this match.

The Five-Way probably saved the show (it did for me, at least). Everyone looked like a star, and we’re suddenly getting Samoa Joe vs Brock Lesnar. That could be a hell of a match, but I fear it’s just going to be a bunch of suplexes and F5s.

But seriously, who did Bayley piss off to get treated like this? Tell us, Dave, the world must know!

– Rene Ochoa

Thumbs Up

  • Best Match: Neville vs Austin Aries
  • Worst Match: Noam Dar/Alicia Fox vs Rich Swann/Sasha Banks

It pays to be in the Shield if you’re Seth Rollins. Although the late money came in on Rollins, in the end Vince decided to go with Samoa Joe as the sacrificial lamb to Brock Lesnar at next month’s PPV. Which indicates that Rollins probably has a better shot for SummerSlam and then they move to rebuilding Finn Balor and giving him the shot at Royal Rumble, leading to Reigns and the big fourth attempt at the coronation. They should just do Reigns vs Cena if they want to do a straight passing of the torch. See who actually gets cheered in that match.

– Jeff Cohen

Miz and Ambrose had a decent finish and good match in my thoughts. The steel Cage match didn’t do much for me. Rules did not make much sense for me and it didn’t catch my attention. Bayley and Alexa Bliss match was just bad. I love Alexa Bliss and Bayley but the booking is just abysmal. Bayley looks like an idiot and completely I likable and it just shows as before, she can not win without help from Sasha.

The Submission match to me was the best wrestling on the card. I enjoyed it but now that Aries lost I don’t see nobody really to go and face Neville. The cruiserweight have been handled so dreadfully I cannot see anyone besides Neville holding the title.

The fatal 5 way was good but not great. It picked up at the end. I did not understand the finish. Didn’t know you could end a fatal 5 way by knocking 1 of the guys out. Balor to me came out really weak on this. He has lost on already Raw and took the lost here. He still goes on about never losing the title but has not been built strong to back up the claim that he should have a title match. It seems too early for Samoa Joe vs Lesnar. That is something that should be built into a long term story.

– Kenneith Nieves

What a match…I was on my feet in my living room..that spot on the apron was insane…his rematch at Dominion will be insane

Extreme was better than expected, as usual…was hoping A Double would take it, but Neville is just amazing…Kendo is not even worth a mention, as expected…Caesar deserves everything he gets…Joe vs Brock is fresh, a rare dream match…Finn still looked strong, really everyone did But Finn getting crazy was one of the big highlights for me

Even when WWE let’s me down, Progress, ROH and especially New Japan never disappoint

How can I forget Max Holloway and Claudia..just WOW…THAT’S HOW YOU BEAT A KING IN HIS VILLAGE…masterful performance

  • Worst Match: Bliss-Bayley by a long shot
  • Best Match: Main event was entertaining but I say Neville-Aries was the best overall match of the night even though the crowd did not care all that much.

This show actually surpassed my expectations. I can’t go thumbs up with how they for some reason through the Drifter out there, the mixed tag match and how horrible the Bayley-Bliss match was. Rest was all good to very good. Thumbs in the Middle

Crews-Kalisto: I thought that was actually entertaining and it was nice to see crowd into it. Crews would do well in Cruiserweight division, although I would imagine he’s about 30 pounds too heavy for the 205 requirement if that’s still a thing.

Ambrose-Miz: Thought this was really good. crowd was into it. Was happy with the finish with the teases of a DQ but actually having a finish.

Mixed Tag: It was fine. A raw match to fill time.

Bliss-Bayley: Ugh. That’s what they came up with? That was “This is your life” in a match form. Both Women deserve much better.

Cage Match: Found this to be on the safe side as far as the 4 guys in there, which I was fine with. Hardy’s are coming across as more than just a nostalgic act which is nice to see. Thought the match and drama at end was done well.

Neville-Aries: Really sad they have pre-conditioned the crowd to not care about the Cruiserweights cause I thought these two told a great story and had a terrific match. Love the way that Neville has been booked since the Rumble.

Fatal 5 Way: Pretty good match. Entertaining. The whole 5 people thing kind of makes it odd at times. Really picked up well at the end. Finn came across as a superstar that the crowd really wants to see. Time isn’t right quite yet for him. Loved seeing Joe get the Win. I’ve stayed away from reading the smart money coming in on the shows so was a nice surprise.

For the Raw tag titles, champions The Hardys will defend against Cesaro & Sheamus in a steel cage match. In cruiserweight action, champion Neville is pitted against longtime rival Austin Aries in a submission match.

Our live coverage begins with the pre-show match before the main card kicks off at 8 p.m. ET.

**********

APOLLO CREWS VS. KALISTO

Good match, a lot better than most of these pre-show matches.  Crowd got into it decently well at the end.  Both did all kinds of flying moves including Kalisto doing a springboard 450 bodyblock to Crews on the floor.  Titus O’Neil was at riingside as the coach and yelling at Crews most of the way.  They traded near falls until Crews hit a standing shooting star press.  Kalisto kicked out and O’Neil was yelling at Crews.  Kalisto then did the Salida del Sol kicking off O’Neil and pinned Crews.

DEAN AMBROSE VS. THE MIZ FOR IC  TITLE, TITLE CAN CHANGE VIA DQ

Miz won the title.  They had a good long match.  Both damaged the others’ knee with figure fours.  The finish saw Miz tell Maryse to slap him.  Miz then told the ref to DQ Ambrose for outside interference.  John Cone was mad about that and wouldn’t call for the DQ.  Instead, he threw Maryse out.  As the ref was yelling at Maryse to leave, Miz kicked Ambrose low and threw him into Cone, whose back was turned.  Cone thought Ambrose knocked him down and was yelling at him while Ambrose pleaded not to DQ him.  While Ambrose and Cone were arguing, Miz came from behind him and hit the skull crushing finale and got the pin.  Good match overall, actually got quite good late before they went to the story finish..

Bayley did an interview.  Bayley made fun of the “This Is Your Life” segment.  She said she’s been studying Tommy Dreamer, Sandman and  Steve Blackman and talked about seeing Wonder Woman and how it insprired her and she wants to inspire peoople herself and regain the title.

RICH SWANN & SASHA BANKS VS. NOAM DAR & ALICIA FOX

Basic fast match.  Banks did double knees off the top rope to the floor onto Dar and then Dar got in the ring where Swann pinned him with a Phoenix splash.  Swann & Banks danced together after the match.  It felt more like a quick Raw match.

ALEXA BLISS VS. BAYLEY FOR WOMEN’S TITLE IN A KENDO STICK ON A POLE MATCH

This was really bad.  The story is that Bayley was too nice and wouldn’t pull the trigger with the stick when she got it.  Short match.  Bayley got the stick first but when she hesitated, Bliss got it and hit Bayley with it a few times.  Bayley came back with a belly-to-belly.  She tried to get the stick but Bliss knocked her head first into the kendo stick set up in the corner.  After a few more kendo stick shots, Bliss pinned her with a DDT.  No drama a all.

Adam Jones of the Baltimore Orioles was at ringside dressed as Virgil with two friends, one dressed like IRS and the other like the Million Dollar Man.

HARDYS VS. SHEAMUS & CESARO IN A CAGE MATCH FOR THE TAG TITLES

Sheamus & Cesaro won the titles.  The rules of the match were escape the cage and both had to escape to win.  It kind of made no sense at certain times because when Jeff escaped, Matt was left with boht.  A few times Matt tried to climb over but was pulled back.  Sheamus & Cesaro did a double team white noise on Matt.  This led to Jeff climbing back in and doing the whisper in the wind off the top of the cage onto Sheamus & Cesaro.  Jeff was selling the move.  Matt tried to drag Jeff through the door but Sheamus & Cesaro both climbed the cage.  They did the photo finish where Sheamus & Cesaro hit the floor faster than Matt could pull Jeff to the floor.

NEVILLE VS. AUSTIN ARIES FOR THE CRUISERWEIGHT TITLE IN A SUBMISSION MATCH

Neville retained the title after Aries missed the low tope, and then in the ring Neville used the red arrow to the back and got the submission with the Rings of Saturn.  When it was over, Aries was briefly smiling on the floor.  Very good match but hampered like so many cruiserweight matches by the lack of heat.  There were a couple of key spots, including Aries getting Neville to tap with the Last Chancery but they were on the floor so the ref ruled it didn’t count.  At another point Aries had the move on but Neville was about to throw the ref to get DQ’d like last time so Aries broke the hold to avoid Neville getting DQ’d.  Some very good wrestling and knee work by both.

BRAY WYATT VS. ROMAN REIGNS VS. FINN BALOR VS. SETH ROLLINS VS. SAMOA JOE FOR THE NO. 1 CONTENDER SPOT

Samoa Joe will be facing Brock Lesnar on 7/9.  These guys tore down the house.  The finish of the match saw Finn Balor uise the sloing blade and cuop de gras on Roman Reigns.  But Joe got the choke on Balor from behind and choked him all the way out.  Excellent match with the usual stuff with eveyrone doing their finishes and someone breaking it up.  Reigns was bleeding from the mouth and the cheek.  Rollins was probably the star of the match and did a plancha splash off the top rope putting Wyatt rhrough the Spanish table.  Reigns speeared Joe and Balor on the floor through the barricade.  Rollins used a frog splash on Reigns for a near fall.  Rollins used a power bomb into the buckles but Reigns came right back with a Superman punch.

WWE adds Kalisto vs. Apollo Crews to Extreme Rules pre-show

Rounding out the card for tonight’s pay-per-view, WWE added Kalisto vs. Apollo Crews to the Extreme Rules pre-show this afternoon.

Kalisto defeated Crews on Raw two weeks ago in a match that was part of a storyline where Kalisto was disappointed in Crews for being involved with the Titus Brand. Titus O’Neil then got a win over Kalisto on last week’s Raw by holding onto Kalisto’s tights while pinning him.

Both Kalisto and Crews arrived on Raw as part of the roster shakeup in April.

There are now seven matches set for tonight’s PPV. The lineup is:

  • Roman Reigns vs. Seth Rollins vs. Finn Balor vs. Samoa Joe vs. Bray Wyatt in an Extreme Rules fatal five-way number one contender’s match
  • Raw Women’s Champion Alexa Bliss defending against Bayley in a kendo stick on a pole match
  • Intercontinental Champion Dean Ambrose defending against The Miz (Ambrose will lose his title if he gets disqualified)
  • Raw Tag Team Champions The Hardys defending against Cesaro & Sheamus in a steel cage match
  • WWE Cruiserweight Champion Neville defending against Austin Aries in a submission match
  • Sasha Banks & Rich Swann vs. Alicia Fox & Noam Dar in a mixed tag team match
  • Kalisto vs. Apollo Crews (kickoff show)

Mixed tag match set for WWE Extreme Rules

Another match was added to the card for Extreme Rules prior to tonight’s go-home episode of Raw.

Sasha Banks will be teaming with Rich Swann to take on Alicia Fox & Noam Dar in a mixed tag match at the pay-per-view. The match was announced in a video that WWE posted this afternoon, with Banks and Swann cutting a promo on their opponents.

Banks has feuded with Fox and Dar on Raw over the last few weeks. Swann has also had a long-running program with the couple.

Extreme Rules will take place this Sunday at the Royal Farms Arena in Swann’s hometown of Baltimore, Maryland. The updated lineup for the show is:

  • Roman Reigns vs. Seth Rollins vs. Finn Balor vs. Samoa Joe vs. Bray Wyatt in a fatal five-way extreme rules match (the winner will get a future shot at Brock Lesnar’s Universal Championship)
  • Raw Women’s Champion Alexa Bliss defending against Bayley in a kendo stick on a pole match
  • Intercontinental Champion Dean Ambrose defending against The Miz (Ambrose can lose his title by disqualification)
  • Raw Tag Team Champions The Hardys defending against Cesaro & Sheamus in a steel cage match
  • WWE Cruiserweight Champion Neville defending against Austin Aries in a submission match
  • Sasha Banks & Rich Swann vs. Alicia Fox & Noam Dar in a mixed tag match

Stipulations added to two WWE Extreme Rules title matches

Stipulations for two of the title matches at Extreme Rules were added on Monday night.

It was revealed that Neville would be defending his Cruiserweight Championship against Austin Aries in a submission match at the pay-per-view. Aries submitted Tony Nese with the Last Chancery on Raw before Neville put Nese in the Rings of Saturn to build up the stipulation.

Matt Hardy and Sheamus also faced off with the winner getting to decide the stipulation for their tag title match at Extreme Rules. After Hardy won, he declared that The Hardys would be defending their titles against Cesaro & Sheamus in a steel cage match.

A double main event was announced for next week’s go-home episode of Raw as well. It will be Finn Balor vs. Bray Wyatt vs. Samoa Joe in a triple threat and Roman Reigns vs. Seth Rollins before all five collide in the main event of the PPV on June 4th.

WWE Extreme Rules 2016 live results: Roman Reigns vs. AJ Styles rematch

Just three weeks after Payback, we’re right back into the big event mix for WWE with Extreme Rules, their annual WWE Network show where nearly every match has a stipulation or twist added onto it. This year’s show emanates from the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey — the second time the event has been hosted in the Garden State.

This is the eighth Extreme Rules show in company history as they began back in 2009, headlined by Edge vs. Jeff Hardy in a ladder match. Last year’s show featured then-WWE Champion Seth Rollins vs. Randy Orton in a steel cage match.

We’re looking for your thoughts on tonight’s show so you can leave a thumbs up, thumbs down or thumbs in the middle along with a best and worst match to [email protected].

There was an angle where Big Cass laid out both Dudleys in the ring. He gave Devon the East River Crossing.

DOLPH ZIGGLER VS. BARON CORBIN — NO DQ

A basic match with Ziggler getting a series of near falls until Corbin did a blatant low blow (legal in a no DQ match) and got the pin with the End of Days. Not as good as their match last month.

DOC GALLOWS & KARL ANDERSON VS. USOS IN A TORNADO MATCH

Fast paced match, fairly short.  It was all four in the ring at the same time and no DQ. The crowd was totally behind Gallows & Anderson and booed the Usos.  Gallows & Anderson got the clean win.  Gallows brought in the ring bell, but Jimmy superkicked him.  Jimmy went to the top rope and Gallows moved, so Jimmy landed on the ring bell.  Gallows & Anderson then used the Magic Killer on Jimmy for the pin and win.

US CHAMPION KALISTO VS. RUSEV

Good match. Rusev won the title after slamming him off the top rope onto the apron. They sold it like Kalisto reinjured his back from Raw on Monday and they were checking on him. Rusev then jumped in and put the Accolade on for the submission. Kalisto had gone to the top rope after delivering a moonsault to the floor.  They were pushing like Kalisto was injured at the end, and was coming into the match injured. The EMTs came out after the match.

WWE TAG CHAMPIONS THE NEW DAY (Big E & Xavier Woods) VS. VAUDEVILLAINS

Another short match: 6:00.  Match was okay for the time it had. The Vaudevillains used the Whirling Dervish on Woods but he kicked out. For the finish, Big E tackled English to the floor. Kofi Kingston hit Gotch with an enzuigiri which led to Woods pinning Gotch with the shining wizard.

I-C CHAMPION THE MIZ VS. CESARO VS. SAMI ZAYN VS. KEVIN OWENS

This was a super match with tons of near falls and saves. Cesaro and Zayn, in particular, were great. Michael Cole called it a match of the year candidate, a previously banned Vince McMahon term. The finish saw Zayn hit Cesaro with the Helleva Kick, but Owens pulled Zayn out of the ring when he went for the pin. Zayn threw Miz into the barricade, and then Miz crawled into the ring and pinned Cesaro. They did everything in their arsenals including Cesaro doing a 16-rep swing on Miz. Cesaro had Miz in the Sharpshooter and he tapped but ref Dan Engler was distracted by Maryse. Owens did cannonballs on everyone. Cesaro did running uppercuts on everyone three times on each guy alternating.

DEAN AMBROSE VS. CHRIS JERICHO — ASYLUM CAGE MATCH

The short matches earlier led to this match running more than 26:00 in the cage. It was a weird match that didn’t have much heat for a long time as they traded climbing up and getting the different weapons. They were also hurt following a great match. It was just too long with too many weapons although they did pick it up at the end with Ambrose pulled down a bucket that had thumbtacks. They wrestled for along time after with Jericho using a codebreaker for a near fall. Ambrose came off the top of the cage with an elbow for a near fall.

Jericho used the Walls of Jericho but Ambrose used a kendo stick to break it. They also used a leather strap, fire extinguisher, and then saved a barbed wire board until late with Jericho using it. The match ended Jericho going for a Codebeaker, Ambrose blocking it and slamming Jericho into the thumbtacks, then giving him the Dirty Deeds into the tacks.  Jericho’s body had thumb tacks sticking to him everywhere and he was selling it tremendously, bleeding from his triceps.

WWE WOMEN’S CHAMPION CHARLOTTE VS. NATALYA — SUBMISSIONS MATCH

Dana Brooke came out dressed as Ric Flair (wig, robe) and distracted Natalya when she had Charlotte in the sharpshooter. This allowed Charlotte to get Natalya from behind and put her in the figure eight for the submission. During the match, they traded submissions but were just getting the crowd just as the match was ending.  Match wasn’t as good as last month. The crowd has never recovered since the four-way which tore down the house.  Ric Flair, Brooke and Charlotte celebrated together at the end. So, the story of this match was to elevate Brooke into the top mix. It’s clear they are putting Charlotte and Brooke into a duo to eventually set them up as rivals.

WWE CHAMPION ROMAN REIGNS VS. A.J. STYLES IN AN EXTREME RULES MATCH

The big spot at the end was after Reigns won, Seth Rollins jumped in and hit the Pedigree. The crowd went totally nuts for him as a babyface and chanted “Thank you Seth.”  He posed with the belt so Reigns vs. Rollins is the probable Money in the Bank main event.

The match ended with Styles going for the phenomenal forearm but Reigns nailed him with the spear for the pin. Styles had a death wish, taking some crazy (and I mean crazy) bumps including a high backdrop through a table where he landed on his tailbone. Anderson & Gallows interfered first and laid out Reigns but he still kicked out of the pin.  The Usos came out and laid out Styles with superkicks and a splash off the top but he kicked out.

Reigns hit Anderson and Gallows with Superman punches. Reigns kicked out of a Styles clash, and Styles used a Styles Clash on a chair but Jey Uso pulled Styles off him. Styles got a chair and destroyed Reigns and the Usos with more than a dozen chair shots before going for the spingboard forearm. Another super match.

May 23, 2016 Wrestling Observer Newsletter: WWE Extreme Rules preview, Vince McMahon sells portion of WWE stock, tons more

In theory, WWE interest should start picking up over the next few weeks with the Money in the Bank PPV on 6/19 from the new T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, SummerSlam on 8/21 from the Barclays Center, and returns of injured stars John Cena, Seth Rollins, Randy Orton, Bray Wyatt and Neville as well as Brock Lesnar and theoretically Paul Heyman for some Raw shows.
