AEW WrestleDream review: Adam Copeland is All Elite

So in the end, was it the beginning of a new era in AEW?

It seemed that in fact, it was for at least someone as Adam Copeland, known for years in WWE as Edge, made his AEW debut at Sunday’s WrestleDream. Copeland’s arrival ended the great show from top to bottom on a strong, buzzworthy note.

After Christian Cage retained the TNT Championship over Darby Allin thanks to a betrayal by Nick Wayne who blasted Allin with the title, Sting came out for the save but Luchasaurus came out for the three-on-two beatdown. Copeland, complete with his theme song by Alter Bridge, came out to a thunderous ovation. Teasing that he’d help Christian, Copeland instead took out the heels and shook hands with the faces, indicating that it may be Christian vs. Edge once again down the line.

It’s a big move for Copeland, who has been associated with WWE in some form or fashion since 1997. It’s a new promotion with a new roster and fresh faces to wrestle, and it’s always a good thing for a wrestler to test the waters in a new promotion.

The main event had hometown hero Allin lose to Cage in a two out of three falls match that I thought was really great and super well-built. The slam into the stairs that caused Allin to be counted out was one of the sickest I’ve seen in some time. Seriously, it was a brutal bump and you have to question just how long Allin has left. How much can one person take?

The Wayne turn works real well, by the way. He’s needed something for a while in AEW and I think this is a good way for him to get some heat. He sure got a lot of it by doing the turn in his hometown of Seattle.

Let’s have a look at the rest of the show. With a 90-minute pre-show and a four-hour main card runtime, this felt real long by the end. At the same time, I also can’t say there was one single bad match. AEW’s problems with their big shows are never about content, just pacing.

  • The co-main event had FTR retain the AEW Tag Team titles by defeating Aussie Open. This was all very good stuff, but I thought there were better matches on this show and it paled in comparison to their match from last year in London. I think the biggest problem was that it took place at a point in the card where people were tired. Still, this was very good work by both teams. I hope Aussie Open finds their niche here because both guys are good. Kyle Fletcher, in particular, comes off as a future star, but the team has yet to find their place in the company.
  • The latest in the Don Callis saga continued with Sammy Guevara, Will Ospreay, and Konosuke Takeshita scoring the win over Kenny Omega, Chris Jericho and Kota Ibushi after Guevara pinned Jericho thanks to Callis’ interference. It was a good match although did you see the cupping on Ospreay’s back? Holy toledo. Still, it’s clear that the Callis family saga isn’t over and it’s very likely we’ll get another Jericho/Guevara match down the line Maybe Full Gear?
  • Bryan Danielson defeated Zack Sabre Jr. in what, shock of shocks, was an excellent technical match with some of the best back-and-forth grappling and submissions you’ll see. It was a clinic and lived up to expectations. It was such an easy match to watch and pay attention to, if that makes any sense.
  • Ricky Starks defeating Wheeler Yuta was mostly designed for two things: one, to get a win for Starks following last week’s Texas Death Match on Collision and two, to tease a future match between Starks and Jon Moxley, who was doing commentary. This was good while it lasted, but definitely was a buffer match following Swerve Strickland and Hangman Page.
  • Speaking of, Strickland bested Page in an excellent match with the crowd firmly behind Strickland throughout the entire match. Strickland has been gaining steam for most of the last year, but this should be the match that elevates him as a major star as he was just awesome here. I’m not so sure about Page, who looked great here but definitely is at a crossroads in terms of momentum.
  • The Young Bucks look to be facing FTR again soon after winning a four-way match over The Gunns, Lucha Brothers, and Orange Cassidy & Hook. It was a four-way party match where there were a million moves a minute and all of it was good, insane action. I could see the Bucks winning the titles at Full Gear in Los Angeles if AEW wants to wait that long.
  • Kris Statlander retained the TBS title by defeating Julia Hart in what ended up being a pretty good match. The work here was good, though a bit sloppy at times, and the crowd was super into it, especially toward the end. Still, I kind of wish there was a long-term direction for either of the women’s titles nbecause right now, it just feels like everything is running in place. I’m waiting for a real good title program as opposed to just title defenses and championship qualifiers.
  • ROH World & NJPW Strong Openweight Champion Eddie Kingston vs. Katsuyori Shibata was also very good and exactly what you would want between these two. This was just a good back-and-forth match with nice submissions and crisp striking. This was definitely a tribute to Antonio Inoki just like Claudio Castagnoli vs. Josh Barnett was.
  • MJF did it by himself, defeating The Righteous in a handicap match to retain the ROH World Tag Team titles. MJF told The Righteous that he was going to bodyslam Dutch and shove Vincent’s head into Dutch’s rear end. Like a top level babyface, he fulfilled his promises. This ended up being a pretty controversial match. In my opinion, if it got over with the crowd, then it worked. Plus, it was a fun opener where the babyface looked strong so you can’t really complain about that.

And now for some pre-show thoughts:

  • The Acclaimed & Daddy Ass defeated TMDK to retain the AEW Trios titles. There wasn’t much to this, but the action was good while it lasted. The crowd was into this more than the other matches on the pre-show.
  • Luchasaurus squashed Nick Wayne. Initially, I had no idea why they did this total squash of a match. Obviously, it made more sense by the end of the night.
  • Claudio Castagnoli defeated Josh Barnett in what ended up being a very good technical match with a lot of good-looking strikes. This was very Inoki. Moxley was on commentary and was pretty entertaining, adding to the match. He also did commentary for Yuta vs. Starks which was fun too. This was probably the best match on the pre-show in terms of in-ring action although the fans were not into it that much.
  • The opening match of the night was a mixed tag that had Athena, Billie Starkz, Satoshi Kojima and Keith Lee defeating Shane Taylor, Lee Moriarty, Diamante, and Mercedes Martinez. This was a fun opener and what you would expect from an opening eight-person tag. Lee seems to have lost a lot of weight in recent weeks.

That ends another AEW pay-per-view, which now seems to be venturing into monthly territory with the annual Full Gear event taking place next month. AEW’s momentum is hit or miss lately with some of their TV and ticket sales, but there has never been a bad pay-per-view event yet and this was no different.

Adam Copeland: ‘WWE and I have just outgrown each other’

“WWE and I have just outgrown each other,” said Adam Copeland in a social media post in addressing leaving WWE and joining AEW.

Copeland, whose WWE contract reportedly expired sometime last month, made a surprise debut for AEW at WrestleDream on Sunday. After the show, Copeland issued a statement on social media where he attempted to diffuse tribalism between WWE & AEW fans in addressing his move.

Copeland wrote on X:

From The Desk of… As some of you may now know, I’m no longer with WWE. My new home is AEW. I’m excited. Whole new roster. Some familiar faces that I wanted to work with again and a whole set of first ever matches. New challenges, and if you’ve followed my career, you know that’s what I’ve always been driven by. 1/4

But first and foremost I want to address my 25 years with WWE. I love WWE and appreciate everything the company did for me. Always have, always will. They put me on the map, gave me amazing opportunities and through hard work on both ends, I’ve been supplied with a wonderful life. Hell, WWE helped me meet the woman I’d start my family with. Sometimes relationships just grow apart and I feel the WWE and I have just outgrown each other. I wanted to do more. They didn’t have much more for me to do. Simple as that. And that’s ok. I’ll still be watching and still be supporting all of my friends there. 2/4

I don’t buy into this odd mentality of one company or the other. It’s weird. If you took offense to that, take a walk, get some fresh air and soak up some sunshine. It’s wrestling. An amazing gig. But still, it’s wrestling. Relax. It’s supposed to be fun. And it’s just a segment of the fans, not most fans, and definitely not the performers. Within the industry we all know that more choices is better for everyone and pushes us all to be better. As a wrestling fan, which I still am, it’s exciting that there’s viable companies providing wrestling on national and worldwide platforms. If you’re actually a fan of wrestling, and not acronyms, that should make you happy too. 3/4

I guess what I’m trying to say is this, if you’ve appreciated my work, you still can, no matter what the initials are. Because I’ll still be bustin my ass everytime I’m out there. This ride isn’t over just yet. Just try to have fun, like it should be. Because trust me I’ll be having fun everytime I’m out there in an AEW ring. Let’s go! 4/4

Copeland’s final WWE match aired on the Friday, August 18 edition of SmackDown where he defeated Sheamus in Toronto, Ontario, Canada in the main event of the show.

Much more on Copeland’s debut and his future with AEW can be found here in notes from his appearance at the WrestleDream media scrum.

Adam Copeland ‘felt free’ during AEW debut, joining full-time roster

Adam Copeland said he “felt free” making his AEW debut at WrestleDream, adding that he plans to be a full-time wrestler for the company.

Copeland, formerly known as Edge in WWE, made his debut in the main event segment at Sunday’s WrestleDream pay-per-view, and was also the first talent to speak to the media at the post-show media scrum where he noted that he is joining the AEW roster as a full-time performer and will be with the company weekly.

“I felt free. That’s just the word that kept popping… I felt free, and it felt fun,” said Copeland. “I felt almost like the same feeling I would have when I would come out for my indie shows.”

Copeland and AEW’s Tony Khan both stated that he is joining the company’s active roster as a full-time wrestler, with Khan noting that Copeland “will be wrestling a lot.”

In speaking of potential future opponents, Copeland said that with just a cursory glance of the AEW roster he had given Khan a list of 14 names of people that he would like to work with, repeatedly mentioning Samoa Joe as someone who he has never wrestled that he would like to.

Copeland’s debut AEW match has been announced for Dynamite Title Tuesday on October 10, where he will face Luchasaurus.

Other items covered in Copeland’s media availability included his debut vignette which aired at WrestleDream just prior to his entrance, which he says was filmed alongside Darby Allin on Friday night in Seattle.

Copeland also stated that he had semi-sequestered himself in his hotel in Seattle prior to his debut, only exiting occasionally to get food as he hoped to avoid being spotted ahead of WrestleDream.

The full scrum can be seen below.

Adam Copeland’s first promo announced for AEW Dynamite Anniversary

Adam Copeland, formerly known as Edge, will deliver his debut AEW promo on this week’s Dynamite Anniversary.

Copeland’s segment was officially announced for the Wednesday, October 4 Dynamite show during the post-WrestleDream media scrum.

After making his surprise debut in the closing segment of Sunday’s WrestleDream pay-per-view, Copeland was the first talent to speak at the scrum, where both the promo segment and the date and opponent for Copeland’s first AEW match were revealed.

Copeland will make his in-ring debut for the company on the Tuesday, October 10 Title Tuesday edition of Dynamite against Luchasaurus.

Additionally, Copeland was announced as appearing on the Saturday, October 7 AEW Collision episode, with both Copeland and Tony Khan noting at the scrum that Copeland is expected to be a weekly presence in AEW.

Copeland debuted at WrestleDream in saving Sting & Darby Allin from an attack by Luchasaurus, Nick Wayne, and Copeland’s former tag team partner Christian Cage after Cage defeated Allin in the pay-per-view main event to retain the TNT Championship.

The updated lineup for Dynamite Anniversary:

  • Adam Copeland’s debut promo
  • Chris Jericho & Kenny Omega vs. Konosuke Takeshita & Sammy Guevara
  • AEW International Championship: Rey Fenix defends against Nick Jackson

Edge/Adam Copeland’s in-ring debut set for AEW Dynamite Title Tuesday

The date and opponent for Edge/Adam Copeland’s AEW in-ring debut have been revealed.

Copeland, a WWE Hall of Famer, made a surprise debut for AEW during Sunday’s WrestleDream pay-per-view, and his first match will take place against Luchasaurus at Dynamite Title Tuesday on October 10.

AEW’s Tony Khan made the match announcement during the post-WrestleDream media scrum.

Copeland’s surprise debut on Sunday came in saving Sting and Darby Allin from a three-on-two beatdown at the hands of TNT Champion Christian Cage, Luchasaurus, and the newly-turned Nick Wayne. Luchasaurus and Wayne make for natural opponents given the angle, as does Cage. In addition, Cage and Copeland as Edge & Christian were seven-time WWF Tag Team Champions making a Christian segment the natural spot for Copeland’s debut.

It was also announced during the media scrum that Copeland will appear on both this week’s Dynamite and Collision shows, with Copeland officially announced for an in-ring promo segment on Dynamite.

Khan noted at the media scrum that Copeland had signed with the company on a “full-time” deal, with Copeland noting that he plans to be with the company on a weekly basis after spending the majority of his most recent WWE run as a part-time player.

Edge/Adam Copeland debuts at AEW WrestleDream

Adam Copeland, the former Edge in WWE, is now part of AEW.

Copeland debuted at Sunday’s WrestleDream in Seattle, Washington, in the aftermath of Christian Cage’s successful TNT title defense over Darby Allin in a two-of-three falls match.

Cage and Nick Wayne, who had turned on Allin earlier, were laying the boots to Allin when Sting emerged to even the odds. After fighting both Cage and Allin, Luchasaurus came out to give the heels the advantage again.

As Cage was set to give a conchairto to Sting, the arena went black and a video played of a man driving a classic black sports car driving away from a major city as fireworks went off from a stadium. The words “Rated R Superstar” could be seen on the road at one point.

Then, Copeland came out to his longtime WWE entrance song “Metalingus” by Alter Bridge, complete with nearly the same pyro.

Cage welcomed his longtime friend into the ring and offered him the chance to lay the final blow on Sting. Copeland took the chair, paused and then hit Wayne with hit, Cage escaped as Copeland then hit Luchasaurus with a spear.

Copeland then stood tall with Allin and Sting, shaking the hand of Sting to a large ovation to close the show.

Copeland’s WWE contract expired at the end of September and he had turned down an offer from them to return. AEW head Tony Khan was quick to tweet minutes after he debuted that the “Rated R Superstar” Copeland was #AllElite and part of the team.

Soon to be 50, Copeland has been with WWE since 1996, staying affiliated with the company during his retirement from 2011 to 2019. He returned to in-ring action at the 2020 Royal Rumble and wrestled what would be his final match for WWE in Toronto against Sheamus last month.

Edge removed from WWE SmackDown intro

Edge is no longer in the intro of WWE SmackDown.

It was noticeable during Friday’s show that Edge had been removed from the introductory video opening the program. When WWE uploaded a video of their new intro back on September 8, Edge coming out to his pyro could be seen.

Edge has said that his contract with the WWE is set to expire later this month. However, he’s also said that a contract is currently sitting in his inbox.

After PWInsider reported that Edge was removed from WWE’s internal roster, he was added back on, though he is no longer listed as an active television performer. According to the Pro Wrestling Torch, Edge is believed to be AEW-bound after not signing a new deal with WWE. Edge has been associated with WWE for most of his career, first appearing on TV back in 1998.

Edge returned to active wrestling in 2020 after having retired in 2011 due to neck injuries. He last appeared on the August 18 edition of SmackDown in his hometown of Toronto, defeating Sheamus in a match he requested.

Update on Edge reportedly being removed from internal WWE roster

Update —

PWInsider posted an update stating that Edge (Adam Copeland) has been added back to the internal WWE roster but isn’t listed as an active TV performer:

While Copeland was removed from the WWE internal roster, PWInsider.com is told that he has since been added back, but not as an active TV performer.

Copeland is no longer listed internally on either the Raw or Smackdown roster.

Instead, we are told is now listed in what was described as a ‘miscellaneous’ talent list for personalities signed but not working actively on either TV series. Others included on that list currently would be Steve Austin, Big E, Undertaker, Titus O’Neill and Braun Strowman, among others, all talents who are connected to the company, but not actively performing or are injured.

Amid rumors that he could be headed to AEW, Edge has reportedly been removed from the internal WWE roster.

PWInsider reported on Wednesday that Edge has been removed from WWE’s internal roster. Though he’s still on the current roster page of WWE’s website, Edge “internally is no longer listed as an active performer for the company.”

Edge has said that his WWE contract is up at the end of September. The last match on his contract took place on August 18. In his hometown of Toronto, Edge defeated Sheamus on SmackDown. The match was in celebration of the 25th anniversary of Edge’s WWE debut. WWE and Edge indicated that it could be the final match of his career.

Edge spoke to the Toronto crowd following the match and said he didn’t know what the future held for him. Edge said he likely would not wrestle in the city of Toronto again.

PWTorch reported on August 23 that there’s a belief within WWE that Edge is probably heading to AEW. The report said that Edge “presented to WWE what it would take to retain his services, but WWE declined to meet his request.”

In response to the report, Edge said that he still had a WWE contract offer sitting in his inbox.

“I didn’t come at them with some crazy contract or anything,” Edge said. “They didn’t deny me, I have a contract extension sitting in my inbox. I just don’t know what to do. The first time I had to retire it was forced, and this time, the choice is in my lap and it’s a lot harder.”

Edge was forced to retire due to neck issues in 2011 but made his return to the ring in 2020. He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2012.

Edge: WWE didn’t deny me, I have contract extension ‘sitting in my inbox’

Edge has addressed recent reports regarding his future.

According to a report from PW Torch and later confirmed by our own Dave Meltzer, WWE believes Edge is AEW-bound after his contract expires at the end of next month. WWE is said to have “declined to meet Edge’s request” for what it would take for him to re-sign with the company.

Edge posted a video to social media on Thursday refuting some of these claims. He stated that he “didn’t come at them with some crazy contract” and that he has a contract extension offer from WWE “sitting in his inbox.”

“I woke up to a bunch of voicemails, texts, and everything from actual friends and family wondering what’s going on and concerned and blah, blah, blah so I just figured I’d better address it,” Edge says in the video. “There’s nothing going on. There are no hard feelings between me and WWE. I love WWE. It’s my dream gig. It’s all I ever wanted to do.”

“I didn’t come at them with some crazy contract or anything. They didn’t deny me, I have a contract extension sitting in my inbox. I just don’t know what to do. The first time I had to retire it was forced, and this time, the choice is in my lap and it’s a lot harder.”

“WWE gave me that night Friday night in Toronto and it was the best night of my career. A lot of people will say you should retire at WrestleMania or this or that but it’s not their career,” Edge continued. “Friday night was really special for me and I don’t know if that can be topped, to be perfectly honest. If we think we can then great but I need to sit with it.”

Edge defeated Sheamus on Friday’s SmackDown from his hometown of Toronto. He stated beforehand that it was the last match on his WWE contract.

WWE believes Edge is AEW-bound after they decline what it would take to re-sign him

According to a report from PW Torch’s Wade Keller, there is belief in WWE that after Edge’s contract expires in late-September, he will be heading to AEW.

The impetus for the move, according to Keller, is that WWE “declined to meet Edge’s request” for what it would take to have him sign a potential new deal. It’s unclear what the specifics of his requests were.

Dave Meltzer has confirmed the accuracy of the report as well.

“PWTorch has learned that Copeland presented to WWE what it would take to retain his services, but WWE declined to meet his request. This has sparked a belief within WWE that he is probably headed to AEW and knew at that time what AEW could offer him (based, perhaps, on conversations with other wrestlers of his star power about AEW pay).”

Edge (Adam Copeland) wrestled what he said was his last match in Toronto, Canada, on last Friday’s SmackDown as he was celebrating the 25th anniversary of his WWE debut. He then told a Toronto radio show that his bout with Sheamus was the last one on his contract and added that his contract expires at the end of September.

When asked about the idea of retirement, the 49-year-old said he’s thought about it but hasn’t come to any conclusions as he is “torn” about what to do.

“Because I don’t want to do this to the point where I don’t feel like I’m able to have the output that I want. Because only I know how I feel when I’m deep into a match and go, ‘Oof, man, okay, didn’t do enough cardio’ or ‘Man, I did all that cardio and I’m still feeling this way.’ That’s why I really want to collect myself after this thing. Take just a big ol’ deep breath and just decide what that is. My contract is up at the end of September. This is my last contracted match. So I have a lot of decisions to make. But I can’t do it now. I think I almost got to see how Friday goes in a weird way. I know that’s not a clear answer, but I don’t have it yet.”

Edge’s longtime tag team partner in WWE, Christian Cage, signed with AEW in March 2021.

Edge praises Sheamus after WWE SmackDown match: ‘It was pure joy in there’

Edge is thankful to have shared the ring with Sheamus on last Friday’s episode of SmackDown.

In what may have been Edge’s final match, he defeated Sheamus on SmackDown in Toronto. The match was part of WWE’s celebration of the 25th anniversary of Edge’s debut.

Edge wanted Sheamus to be his opponent because they had never faced each other one-on-one before. While challenging Sheamus to the match, Edge brought up that it was an appearance on Sheamus’ Celtic Warrior Workouts that inspired him to return to the ring in 2020. Edge said Sheamus became part of his extended family while they trained together for the return.

Following their SmackDown match, Edge reflected on the moment in an Instagram post on Sunday. Edge wrote that he knew Sheamus was great, but he didn’t know how great until facing him. Edge called Sheamus “the epitome of work ethic” and said wrestling him was pure joy.

Full circle pints of Guiness. From Dublin to Toronto and 19 years in between. Back now after an amazing trip home to Toronto. What can I say? I’ll take that experience with me to the grave. Toronto you brought it. Speaking of bringing it, @wwesheamus is a beast. As strange as this sounds it was pure joy in there. Just two buds beating the hell out of each other. I knew he was great. But I didn’t know how great. That dude is so insanely talented, spectacular at what he does, and just a damn hard worker. He is the epitome of work ethic. Can’t teach that. Thanks fella. It was an honor.

Edge and Sheamus had a pint of Guinness together backstage after the show.

This was the final match on Edge’s current WWE contract. Edge has said that his contract is scheduled to expire at the end of September.

While giving a speech to the crowd after SmackDown, Edge said he doesn’t know what the future holds for him. He said he’s going to talk to his family this week and see what they want him to do. Edge indicated that this was the final time he would ever wrestle in the city of Toronto.

Edge says his WWE contract expires at end of September

Edge has given an update on when his WWE contract is slated to expire.

Last night’s SmackDown was the final match on Edge’s current contract with WWE. While appearing on Sportsnet’s The FAN Morning Show in advance of the match, Edge stated that his contract is up at the end of September.

Edge responded when asked if he’s thought about his future and potentially retiring:

I mean, I can’t say I haven’t thought about it. I have, for sure. But I realize that I haven’t come to any conclusions. And I’m kind of torn, honestly. Because I don’t want to do this to the point where I don’t feel like I’m able to have the output that I want. I know that’s not a clear answer, but I don’t have it yet.

Edge celebrated the 25th anniversary of his WWE debut on SmackDown last night. The main event saw Edge defeat Sheamus in their first-ever one-on-one match against each other.

After SmackDown went off the air, Edge gave a speech to the crowd. Edge said he doesn’t know what the future holds for him. He’s going to talk to his family this week and see what they want him to do. Edge did indicate that last night was the final time he’ll ever wrestle in the city of Toronto.

Edge’s wife Beth Phoenix, their two daughters, and Edge’s trainer Ron Hutchison were in the crowd for last night’s SmackDown.

Edge and Sheamus hugged following their match and then had a pint of Guinness together backstage after the show.

A video package celebrating Edge’s 25th anniversary also aired on SmackDown.

WWE SmackDown video highlights: Edge’s final match?

Though his future may be uncertain, Edge had a successful night as he celebrated the 25th anniversary of his WWE debut.

Edge celebrated the milestone on last night’s SmackDown from his hometown of Toronto. He was in action in the main event, defeating Sheamus. Edge’s wife Beth Phoenix and their two daughters were in the front row for what could have potentially been his final match.

It took two spears for Edge to put away Sheamus. The two hugged after the match and even had a pint of Guinness together backstage.

This was the last match on Edge’s current WWE contract. After SmackDown went off the air, Edge spoke to the crowd and said he doesn’t know what the future holds. Edge said he would be talking to his family this week and would see what they want him to do. Edge thanked the crowd and told them that this was the last time he would ever wrestle in Toronto.

A video package celebrating Edge’s 25 years in WWE was also shown earlier in the episode.
