The 6 Year Anniversary of AEW Dynamite comes on the air with Excalibur welcoming us alongside Taz & Bryan Danielson before running down tonight’s card. The Mixed Tornado Tag match with Darby Allin & Kris Statlander vs. Wheeler Yuta & Marina Shafir will main event the show.

Earlier today, The Young Bucks were outside the Hard Rock Casino, Nick Jackson’s favorite place in the world, as Matt has an idea for a grand entrance tonight. He left, while Nick took Brandon Cutler and hit the casino with his bag of money to the High Limits Slots room. We then cut back outside where Matt found a dejected Nick to tell him about the pyro, confetti, live tigers and alligators possibly coming down the ramp during their entrance when he grabbed the bag and there was no money left. Nick couldn’t make eye contact with his brother, as we cut to Matt & Nick currently in the ring, with the graphic reading The Broke Bucks and Account Balance $0.00 above it.

Kenny Omega & AEW Tag Team Champions Brodido (Brody King & ROH Champion Bandido) vs. Josh Alexander (w/Don Callis) & The Young Bucks (Matt & Nick Jackson)

(Exactly the kind of party match you’d want from the talent involved, as this was action packed the moment the bell rang. A needed win for Omega’s return, as the post-match was the major story here, not only did Jurassic Express go after The Bucks again, but Omega showed he didn’t forget what Perry did while involved with The Elite. The more buzzworthy news out of this was the return of a familiar Idolo, who is yet another to join The Callis Family, which feels like a revolving door at this point.)

The returning Omega got a ton of pyro, leaving Taz to wonder if that was what The Bucks were hoping for (no alligators or tigers, though). Callis joined commentary, who called Alexander a real Canadian who’s tough, unlike Omega. Both Canadians start, as Alexander avoided an early You Can’t Escape, Matt tagged in, but was immediately face planted by Omega. Fast tags by Brodido, as King squashed The Bucks with a senton, while Bandido connected with a springboard. Bandido dodged superkicks, as we got a series of Macarena spots, with The Bucks mocking Bandido, who got Omega to help take them out and did the dance as well. Omega hit a slingshot plancha on The Bucks, as Bandido, with help with King, connected on an assisted springboard moonsault on the pile. Back inside, King bodyslammed everyone in his path onto Alexander until Bandido switched it up and slammed King on his opponent.

Omega tagged in, but was caught off guard by The Bucks, who followed with an assisted slingshot senton, as Bandido ate a Cazadora/Cutter combo. Omega fought back with a double Kotaro Krusher on The Bucks, as Alexander was tossed to the floor. Omega wanted a dive, but was superkicked by The Bucks before take-off. Alexander flew in with his running cross body, while Nick connected on a Tornillo. Trifecta corner attack on Omega, as Alexander hit a spinning Torture Rack slam, as Nick flew off the top onto Brodido outside to take control into break.

We return to Omega making a comeback, suplexing Matt into Nick, who was hung in the Tree of Woe. Hot tag to King, who was a house of fire with chops and corner splashes aplenty. The Bucks avoided one, but missed the Bandido blind tag. King mowed through Matt with a sliding lariat, while Alexander caught Bandido with a slam on the apron. The Bucks ramped up their offense with a running PK on the apron and tried the Tornillo again, only this time, Omega cut them off and took out the pile with a Terminator Dive. Omega went after Callis, who ran for his life, while back inside, Bandido wanted the 21-Plex, but Nick landed on his feet, backflipping Bandido into Alexander’s clutches. King & Omega returned to help Bandido and we got a Triple Tombstone. Alexander hit German Suplexes on everyone until Omega was ping-ponged with a Superkick Party. An assisted Neutralizer from Alexander & Matt, but King broke the count.

The Bucks wanted a TK Driver on Omega, but King popped Nick in mid-air with a hard forearm. Snap Dragons dished out by Omega to everyone in his path before cracking Alexander with a V-Trigger and Poison-Rana. High stack powerbomb led to a V-Trigger flush, as King took out The Bucks with a dive, as Omega hit a third V-Trigger, Bandido followed with a 21-Plex and Omega put Alexander away with a One-Winged Angel to win it.

Post-match, Brodido celebrated up the ramp with Omega staying in the ring, seemingly to talk to The Bucks, but was cut-off by an Alexander superkick. Alexander pounced on Omega, as The Bucks looked on, but didn’t help despite Alexander asking them to. Jurassic Express’ music hit, as Jack Perry & Luchasaurus slowly walked out and stared down The Bucks (all while Alexander continued to beat up Omega in the corner). Perry laid out The Bucks with a Double DDT, as Luchasaurus dropped them with a Double Chokeslam. Alexander went after Perry, who fired off a pump knee, as Omega was there with Snap Dragon. Omega starting shoving Perry, telling him he didn’t forget when The Elite did a stretcher job on him last year. Perry shoved Omega out of the way and took out The Bucks with a dive, while he & Luchasaurus fought with them to the back.

Omega was left alone in the ring and a microphone saying he’s been here for 6 years, since day 1, seeing the highest of highs and lowest of lows. Many fans have been there with him since the beginning, if it’s your first show, that’s fine too, as he appreciates and values them all. They’ve even lost some along the way, but Omega is a better person because of everything that’s happened and looks forward to the future. Omega hit his Goodbye & Goodnight line before the lights cut out. When they came back on, a masked man was standing behind Omega and revealed to be the returning Andrade. Omega was laid out with a spinning underhook DDT, as Don Callis jumped in the ring, shook Andrade’s hand, presumably adding yet another soldier into The Family ranks.

Match Result: Kenny Omega & Brodido defeated Josh Alexander & The Young Bucks when Omega pinned Alexander

-Highlight video was shown with big moments to celebrate the anniversary of Dynamite. I thought this was an excellent showcase of the major matches and moments that have defined the show over the last 6 years.

**********

-Mark Briscoe is backstage and talked about how his life the last 6 months has been consumed by 3 letters, MJF. Briscoe said he learned MJF is all talk and said not to say his brother’s name and how words have consequences, something Briscoe proved at All Out. MJF told him he couldn’t win the big one, but he must’ve won one big enough since he sent MJF on sabbatical. MJF cost Briscoe from getting a TNT Title match and it was supposed to be Hologram, but now it’s Cassidy, he can be happy for his friends and want to see them succeed. Once Cassidy wins the TNT Title tonight, he’ll be there celebrating with him, while MJF is at home, picking tacks out of his ass.

Kyle Fletcher (w/Don Callis) vs. Orange Cassidy for the TNT Title

(Until the finish, I thought this was an excellent TNT Title match, with Cassidy having the fans loudly behind him and biting at near falls. Fletcher continues to be on one hell of a run, though, looking better and better every time he’s out there. Now, to the finish, the first hour of this show has 2 more members of The Don Callis Family, who, if you count the injured members as well, are up to 14 people in their faction. Granted, they’re some of the best wrestlers in the world and Callis is the best heel manager in the game, how many will be enough?)

We’re reminded this was originally supposed to be Hologram, who is on the shelf for an extended period following the attack by Fletcher on Collision. Cassidy worked for early pin attempts, until Fletcher didn’t budge on a sunset flip attempt. Cassidy avoided the brainbuster, tried a backslide and put on the brakes from a Fletcher leap frog attempt, as he just casually rolled to the floor. Cassidy tried putting his hands in his pockets, but was booted right the face. Cassidy recovered, suckered Fletcher into a chase and connected on a dive, but as both came back to the ring, Cassidy went up top and was cut off by a springing Fletcher boot, taking things to commercial.

Back from break, Cassidy started firing up during Fletcher’s kicks, tried for the pockets again, only to eat another thrust kick to the chops. Fletcher granted Cassidy’s wish and trapped the hands in the pockets, so he could put more boots to Cassidy. Fletcher wanted a lawn dart to the corner, but Cassidy countered into an arm drag, sending Fletcher crashing. Little kicks from Cassidy start ramping up in intensity, but Fletcher dodged a PK. Cassidy floated over in the corner and sent Fletcher from buckle to buckle before connecting on a slingshot DDT. Quickly up top, Cassidy wanted a cross body, but Fletcher caught him into a Michinoku Driver for two. Fletcher wanted his Brainbuster, but Cassidy countered into the Stundog Millionaire. Cassidy wanted another, only Fletcher countered into a Snap Dragon. Liger Bomb countered into a Cassidy DDT, who followed with a second spinning DDT that spiked Fletcher for two of his own.

Cassidy wanted an Orange Punch, but Fletcher spun out. They trade Powerbomb/Beach Break attempts that’s changed to pin attempts, until Fletcher planted Cassidy with a spinning Tombstone for a close near fall. Running corner boot caught Cassidy, as Fletcher wanted a Brainbuster, but Cassidy got an inside cradle for two. Both trade thrust kicks, as they fight up the ropes. Fletcher crashed, as he took the ref, while Cassidy was distracted by Callis. Who we thought was “Hologram” ran out and seemed to chase off Callis, until he crotched Cassidy. Fletcher delivered his Top Rope Brainbuster and got the pin.

Post-match, Fletcher & “Hologram” put the boots to Cassidy, until Roderick Strong, Kyle Fletcher & Mark Briscoe ran out to make the save. Callis brought out the rest of the Family, as Kazuchika Okada, Konosuke Takeshita, Lance Archer, Rocky Romero, Hechicero, Josh Alexander & Andrade (I think that was everyone) all join Fletcher and “Hologram” who rips off his shirt as the lights start flickering and we’re told it’s El Clon, the evil Hologram, who they’ve been teasing the last month or so. It’s unfortunate that he debuts right after Hologram will be injured for an extended time.

Match Result: Kyle Fletcher defeated Orange Cassidy to retain the TNT Title

-Renee Paquette is backstage with Mercedes Mone saying in 16 days, she’ll be the longest TBS Champion of all time. Mone said Paquette isn’t stupid or dumb and how they should be celebrating her tonight, but also AEW Dynamite. Mone said Title Tuesday next week in Jacksonville, she wants to defend her TBS Title against someone she’s never wrestled. Paquette brings up the AEW Women’s Tag Titles announcement last week and Mone wonders who her tag partner will be? Mini-Mone comes into the shot, as Mone is disgusted that Harley Cameron walks in talking about the chemistry they have together. Mone said every time they team, Cameron loses and walks away. Mini-Mone said she’s clearly playing hard to get. We never learned who Mone would be defending her TBS Title against next week.

AEW World Champion Hangman Adam Page & AEW Trios Champions The Opps (Samoa Joe & Powerhouse Hobbs) vs. Death Riders (Jon Moxley, Claudio Castagnoli & Daniel Garcia)

(Another action-packed party match, as it really was the catalyst to seemingly get the Page & Joe bad blood going. While it seemed pretty tame for this to ramp up into a pull apart in the post-match, I’d certainly look forward to Joe vs. Page when that takes place, as Joe was right, Page has never beaten him.)

Joe was relentless after Castagnoli to start, going after the eyes, even having to be pulled back by Hobbs. Taz said Joe wants revenge for what Death Riders did to Katsuyori Shibata, as Joe was backed to the wrong corner, where Moxley tagged in, took the ref, allowing Garcia & Castagnoli to double team. Frequent tags from Death Riders, who keep pressure on Joe, isolating him in their corner. Joe hit a leg sweep on Moxley and running senton before tagging Page, who lit up Garcia with forearms, punches and slingshot dive. Back inside, Garcia avoided a pop-up powerbomb, traded big boots, which Page won that battle, until Hobbs tagged in, mowing everyone down in his path until Moxley went at the eyes, but didn’t matter, Hobbs steamrolled him with a lariat. Garcia tried to attack from behind, but Hobbs no sold and Garcia got “You F’d Up” chants from the crowd. They were right, as Hobbs ran through him, until Moxley tried a dive, but Hobbs caught and slammed Moxley repeatedly on the apron before rag dolling him to the floor.

Back from break, Hobbs & Castagnoli slugged it out, until Castagnoli powered Hobbs over with a gut-wrench suplex. Castagnoli broke the front face lock on Hobbs to pop Page with a right hand, but that delay allowed Hobbs to hit a snap powerslam and hot tag to Page, who seemed to steal the tag from Joe, not leaving him pleased. Garcia was planted with a Death Valley Driver, but Moxley tagged in and we get an intense face-off between the familiar rivals of Page & Moxley, who started trading shots. They exchange finisher attempts before Castagnoli got a blind tag and saved Moxley, who laid out Page with a piledriver. Castagnoli hit a charging uppercut, but Page kicked out. Hobbs ran in and laid out Castagnoli with a Spinebuster until Garcia pulled Hobbs to the floor with a front face lock. Joe sent Garcia crashing outside, until Moxley laid out Joe with a Paradigm Shift. Page ran in with a Dead Eye on Moxley, but turned into a pop-up uppercut by Castagnoli. Joe made the save, leading to Page to hit the Buckshot and pin on Castagnoli.

Post-match, Page was celebrating, handing the Trios Title to Hobbs and shoved the title to Joe’s chest, as it fell to the ground. Page held his AEW World Title high, as Joe spun him around and got in Page’s face. Jerry Lynn and a bunch of security rush the ring to separate the two, as Joe yelled that Page has never beaten him. Joe threw a shot, as security quickly stepped between the two. Hobbs had to try to keep the peace, walking Joe to the back, as Page told all the security to get out.

Match Result: Hangman Adam Page, Samoa Joe & Claudio Castagnoli defeated Death Riders when Page pinned Castagnoli

-Video package of JetSpeed & Willow Nightingale talking about their run-in with FTR & Stokely last week. Kevin Knight challenges either member of FTR to a match. Nightingale said she’ll be there ringside to have their back. Stokely said there’s no one he hates more than Nightingale and they have a surprise for her in due time. Since Knight wants to run his mouth, he can have his match, but won’t find out until Collision.

**********

-Renee Paquette is backstage with Hangman Adam Page, asking his thoughts on what just happened out there with Samoa Joe? Page said in 6 years, he’s never been so confused, as Joe had a bitch-fit for what, dropping his title while handing it to him? Page then realized it was about much more; it’s about Joe wanting a World Title match. While Page is grateful for The Opps helping counter the Death Riders at All In when he won the title, he’s fine giving him a Title match and suggests Wrestle Dream for that match to happen.

Timeless Toni Storm vs. Tay Melo

(Quick, competitive match, as Melo got in plenty of offense, but even looking quite dejected after losing her title, Storm was not to be denied here. The post-match set the stage for the one on one challenge rematch by Storm, it’s now up to Statlander to decide on when.)

Very serious demeanor for Storm, who isn’t in her usual wrestling gear, with Taz saying she’s looking almost lost without her AEW Women’s Title. Melo tried a quick start, but Storm planted her with a spinning back breaker. They go to the corner, where Melo locks in an arm breaker while in the ropes, as Storm went outside, blocked a PK and planted her face first on the apron as things went to commercial.

Back from break, Melo hit a running boot in the corner, but went to the well once too many, as Storm exploded out with a face-buster into the double down. Slugfest ensues, both counter finisher attempts until Storm connects with a DDT. Melo battled back with boots to the corner, which was unpopular with the crowd, as she tried Tay-KO, but Storm spun out into a German Suplex. Sweet Cheek Music led to Storm Zero and the victory for Storm.

Post-match, Storm took the mic and said at All Out, when the bell rang, she didn’t hear victory nor defeat, she heard nothing. Silence so deep, it completely gobbled her up. Storm stared at her that she was everything that she wasn’t, a glorious champion. When she left the ring, all the questions followed her into the dark, as she wondered who the bloody hell am I? Kris Statlander, she’s not finished with her and needs to know one on one. Name the time and the place, Storm will be…Storm didn’t finish her line, instead dropping the mic as they faded to black.

I should point out, the crowd did the What chants during this and was completely unnecessary. I don’t care what show you go to or for what company, it’s not 2002, enough already. Luckily, Storm is a pro and didn’t let any of that derail her in her promo.

Match Result: Timeless Toni Storm defeated Tay Melo

-We’re told Eddie Kingston faces Dralistico this week on Collision (which starts an hour early this week) and go to a video package of Sammy Guevara saying Eddie Kingston’s momentum will come crashing to a halt, as they have a lot of history together. Kingston is with HOOK and told Dralistico he’s going to get beat up thanks to Guevara running his mouth.

**********

-Renee Paquette is backstage with Samoa Joe & Powerhouse Hobbs, asking about what happened with Hangman Adam Page. Joe said it’s no surprise and questions if this wasn’t a misunderstanding at all with Page. Perhaps he’s been so preoccupied with Death Riders he forgot who he is and Page might’ve forgotten that, too. Page has never beaten Joe and no matter the day, he won’t be better than him. Joe accepts and said he’ll introduce Page not to Cowboy Sh*t, but to Deep Sh*t. We get an official match graphic and it’s on for Wrestle Dream.

G.O.A. (Bishop Kaun & Toa Liona w/Ricochet) vs. Swirl (Blake Christian & Lee Johnson)

Ricochet is on commentary and talks about the conspiracy theory of getting screwed out of title matches recently, saying even referee Aubrey Edwards is in on it. Kaun & Liona take turns lighting up Johnson in the corner with chops, but Christian got a blind tag, as Kaun ate a series of kicks and handspring corkscrew kicks. Christian went for a third, but Kaun caught him with a fireman’s carry double knees taking things to picture-in-picture.

Back from break, Johnson made the hot tag and ran wild, sending Kaun crashing outside, laying him out with a somersault plancha. Liona tried to slow the momentum, but Christian flew in with a Tornillo. Kaun made the save, allowing Liona to steamroll and turn Christian inside out with a Pounce. Johnson was squashed with a corner cannonball by Kaun, as they put him away with Open the Gates for the win.

Post-match, Ricochet left commentary and delivered a Spirit Gun on Johnson until The Hurt Syndicate’s music hit. Bobby Lashley, Shelton Benjamin & MVP walk out, as MVP said at All Out, he embarrassed himself and owes an apology to every Hurt Syndicate fan, allowing a bald booty shaker and his backup dancers to beat MVP. Contemplating maybe he’s lost a step, but MVP knows he can still fight. He doesn’t want to wrestle or for three counts, he wants a No DQ Street Fight. Ricochet had to hold back Kaun and MVP said he’ll call Bandido out to throw his b*tch ass around again. MVP said he wants the fight next week, tossed the mic to Ricochet, who accepted the challenge.

Match Result: G.O.A. defeated Swirl

-Renee Paquette is backstage with Kris Statlander, who said 6 years of AEW and crossing paths with Toni Storm, but they’ve never wrestled one on one. If Storm wants the answers she’s looking for, she can have her match at Wrestle Dream. Harley Cameron bolts in, quickly hypes up Statlander and exits just as quickly.

-Alicia Atout is backstage with Don Callis, Kazuchika Okada & Konosuke Takeshita. Callis said just when you think The Family is down and out, he adds two new members in El Clon & Andrade. Callis issues a challenge for next Tuesday to Brodido in Jacksonville to face Takeshita & Okada. Takeshita cut Callis off and wasn’t thrilled about teaming with Okada, who told them they’re teaming, which delighted Callis. Takeshita was less than enthused.

AEW Women’s Champion Kris Statlander & Darby Allin vs. Marina Shafir & Wheeler Yuta

(Wild brawl of a main event, that saw a unique use of thumbtacks, which is impressive considering we’re just a few weeks removed from the All Out match with tacks aplenty. It also wouldn’t be a Darby Allin match if he didn’t take at least a few insane bumps.)

Statlander & Allin cut off Yuta & Shafir in the crowd during their entrance, as Statlander chucked Yuta into the wall, while Shafir briefly locked Allin in a rear naked choke. Statlander helped Allin, as the ladies brawled to one side of the arena, where Shafir locked Statlander with a head scissors choke, but was dropped face first onto the barricade. Allin held Shafir & Yuta, as Statlander jumped off the retaining wall onto the pile. Spilling to ringside, Allin sat Yuta down on a chair, tried a plancha, but crashed and burned through the chair. The ladies brawl to the commentary table, where Shafir set Statlander up and lit her up with chops and kicks. Death Riders stood tall as things went to commercial.

Chairs were thrown into the ring during break, as Statlander had to fight back, but Shafir split the legs and got just enough of a 619 into a head scissors spike on the apron. Allin returned and immediately was planted with a German Suplex into the pile of chairs by Yuta. Shafir & Statlander fought atop the barricade, where Statlander got an eye poke and suplexed Shafir through the time keepers table. Back in the ring, Yuta was crotched in the corner, as Allin delivered a brutal superplex onto the chair pile for two. Both fought back up in the corner, where this time, Yuta delivered a Hangman’s Neckbreaker onto the apron. Yuta grabbed a bag from under the ring and dumped out tacks. Statlander cut Yuta off, but ate an Angle Slam for her efforts. Yuta looked at the tacks and wanted a suplex onto them, but Statlander reversed with one onto the chairs. Shafir applied a rear naked choke, but Statlander spun her around and planted Shafir bare feet first on the tacks. Yuta grabbed some powder, but Allin ducked and Shafir was blinded instead. Allin threw Yuta into Shafir and she locked her own tag partner in a choke. Statlander flew in with a 450 Splash on them both, while Allin delivered a Coffin Drop on Yuta to get the win.

Post-match, Timeless Toni Storm walked to the stage with an emotionless stare, as Statlander walks to her for a face-off. They both then smile at each other before the punches start flying. Security separates the two and takes them to the back, as Allin is left lighting up Yuta with his belt until PAC blindsides Allin. Wrapping the belt around Allin’s neck, Jon Moxley & Claudio Castagnoli join, as Moxley said at Wrestle Dream, Allin has zero chance at doing what needs to be done to win. Never say die, relentless Darby Allin, Moxley doesn’t know how, but for the first time, Allin will say the words I Quit. PAC picked Allin up, got a running start and turned Allin inside out with a lariat for a parting shot.

Match Result: Kris Statlander & Darby Allin defeated Marina Shafir & Wheeler Yuta

Three matches booked for AEW Dynamite sixth anniversary

AEW has announced three matches for the sixth anniversary episode of Dynamite set for Wednesday, October 1.

In trios action, Jon Moxley, Claudio Castagnoli, and Daniel Garcia of The Death Riders will take on AEW World Champion Hangman Adam Page, Samoa Joe, and Powerhouse Hobbs on next week’s Dynamite. The match was made official during this week’s show.

Moxley is feuding with Darby Allin, who challenged Mox to an I Quit match at WrestleDream in the closing segment on this week’s Dynamite.

Another bout for next week’s Dynamite anniversary came out of this week’s show-closing angle, as Kris Statlander and Allin will face Wheeler Yuta and Marina Shafir in a mixed tag. Yuta has been trying to recruit Statlander to The Death Riders, but Statlander convincingly turned him down on Dynamite by hitting him with a lariat before escaping through the crowd.

TNT Champion Kyle Fletcher is also set to defend his title against Hologram in a title vs. streak matchup on next week’s show. Hologram is undefeated in AEW since debuting with the gimmick in July 2024.

The reunited Jurassic Express duo of Jungle Boy and Luchasaurus will also appear on next week’s anniversary episode.

AEW Dynamite sixth anniversary, Wednesday, October 1 —

  • Jon Moxley, Claudio Castagnoli, and Daniel Garcia vs. Hangman Page, Samoa Joe, and Powerhouse Hobbs
  • Mixed tag: Kris Statlander and Darby Allin vs. Marina Shafir and Wheeler Yuta
  • TNT Champion Kyle Fletcher defends against Hologram
  • Jurassic Express return

Powerhouse Hobbs joins The Don Callis Family at AEW Dynamite Anniversary

Powerhouse Hobbs is the newest member of The Don Callis Family.

Hobbs was introduced as the most recent addition to the Callis stable at Wednesday’s Dynamite Anniversary show as he decimated Kenny Omega and Chris Jericho in a post-match attack.

After Omega and Jericho defeated Kyle Fletcher (subbing for Sammy Guevara) and Konosuke Takeshita in tag team action on Dynamite, Hobbs hit the ring and attacked Omega and Jericho at the direction of Callis.

Hobbs sent Omega over the ringside barricade and into the crowd, then continued his attack on Omega in the ring as Callis and Takeshita used duct tape to restrain Omega. Hobbs used a chair to attack Jericho, then allowed Callis to hit Omega with an unprotected chair shot to the head as the angle culminated.

Following the angle, Jericho vs. Hobbs was one of four new matches announced for next week’s AEW Dynamite Title Tuesday.

Hobbs had been a featured player on Collision since that show’s debut in June, feuding with Miro. Their issue came to a close at All Out last month where Miro came away with a victory and branched off into an angle with his wife CJ Perry. Since losing at the pay-per-view, Hobbs has wrestled twice in dark matches at Collision tapings.

Wardlow returns to AEW at Dynamite Anniversary

Wardlow is back in AEW.

The former TNT Champion made his surprise return to the promotion after nearly four months off TV in an unannounced squash match on Wednesday’s Dynamite Anniversary show.

Wardlow defeated Griff Garrison by referee stoppage at Dynamite Anniversary after hitting a series of powerbombs. It was the first match for Wardlow since dropping the TNT Championship to Luchasaurus on the debut episode of AEW Collision back in June.

At a convention appearance in August, Wardlow spoke about how the time off television had impacted him, noting that he had suffered from depression during the break.

It has never been reported whether Wardlow’s absence was injury related or a planned sabbatical.

Wardlow is a three-time former TNT Champion, tying Sammy Guevara for the most reigns with that title in company history. His most recent reign with the TNT title began in April with a win over Powerhouse Hobbs on Dynamite, and ended with the loss to Luchasaurus on the debut Collision in June.

Wednesday’s match was the first of 2023 for Garrison on AEW television, although he has been active on the ROH brand.

AEW Dynamite Anniversary live results: Adam Copeland debut promo

The “Rated R Superstar” Adam Copeland will deliver his first promo in his new home on tonight’s AEW Dynamite Anniversary show as they celebrate four years as a company.

After making his surprise debut at WrestleDream, Copeland said that tonight, he will be “delivering the mission statement” for what his time in AEW will be. His first AEW match is scheduled for next Tuesday’s Dynamite.

Rey Fenix is scheduled to defend the International Championship against Nick Jackson of The Young Bucks in a rematch of one of the most critically acclaimed bouts in the history of Dynamite back in November 2019.

After never teaming before prior to last week’s Collision, Chris Jericho & Kenny Omega will pair up for the third time in five days as they face Sammy Guevara & Konosuke Takeshita.

Bullet Club Gold’s Jay White & Juice Robinson will also share some thoughts as part of tonight’s show.

**********

The 4 Year Anniversary of AEW Dynamite comes on the air with Excalibur welcoming us alongside Tony Schiavone and Taz as we go backstage to Renee Paquette standing by with Chris Jericho & Kenny Omega. Paquette mentions 4 years ago they were on opposite sides of the ring and Jericho said it’s hard to believe now they are partners. Adam Copeland walks into the shot and said maple syrup should be flowing with how much Canadiana is here. Copeland said it’s always good to see Jericho, while Omega said Copeland’s debut had him “on the edge of his seat” and shook hands with Copeland saying if he needed anything, just ask.

Rey Fenix (w/Penta El Zero Miedo & Alex Abrahantes) defeated Nick Jackson (w/Matt Jackson) for the AEW International Title

(A rematch from the 8th episode of Dynamite where these two had an absolute classic. The second half of this match was excellent, but more was told this time around with Fenix selling of his back earlier on in the match. Jackson had his close near falls, but Fenix got the victory and really had to be checked on post match by Penta & Abrahantes. Excalibur did mention before the match started the theory of how the holder of the International title might just be snake bitten with injuries.)

A very evenly fast paced back and forth led to a series of strikes and near falls. Fenix tried a fireman’s carry, but crumbled, as his back gave out, with Penta & Abrahantes checking on him. Jackson zoned in and tried for a sunset bomb on the floor, Fenix countered into an arm drag. Jackson was dumped over the barricade, but Fenix missed a barricade walk kick and Jackson hit a hurricanrana off the railing. Jackson connected on a backstabber in the corner, but missed the follow up running boot on the apron, smacking the post instead. Fenix swept the leg and spiked Jackson on the apron leading to a commercial.

The match picked up speed once returning from picture in picture, as Jackson connected with two superkicks, but Fenix kipped up and both collided on high kicks into the double down. Fenix hit a rolling hurricanrana into a pin attempt, but Jackson tried to answer with his moonsault off the apron outside, tweaking his ankle in the process. Fenix tried a rolling cutter, but Jackson countered with a cutter of his own as they teased a double countout. Back inside, Jackson spiked Fenix with his slingshot face buster, as he signaled for a BTE Trigger, but Fenix put on the brakes. Both men showed off unreal agility as they pulled one another up to the top rope, as Jackson hit an avalanche cutter for two.

Jackson connected on a Poison Rana and bounce back Canadian Destroyer for another close near fall. Running knee strikes landed flush, as did the BTE Trigger to the back of the head, but Fenix again kicked out. Fenix blocked a superkick, hung it up in the ropes, hit a double stomp and Frog Splash for two. The spinning sole butt in the corner hit, but Jackson countered the Fire Thunder Driver into a roll up, which Fenix in turn countered for the flash pin.

-Footage of Adam Cole putting off his surgery to visit Roderick Strong at his home is shown. The audio for this was really bad, as Strong was still in his hospital gown and wheelchair with Matt Taven & Mike Bennett as they presented Cole with a scooter to play around with. Strong & Cole chased each other around Strong’s house as Taven pet a giraffe stuffed animal. Cole asked what the emergency was and it was moving furniture, which Cole did on his one leg. Strong said he loved what Cole did with the place, it’s unique just like Cole. Strong said Cole couldn’t leave just yet and still needs Cole’s help, ending the video. Again, this was funny, but the audio was awful.

Wardlow defeated Griff Garrison via TKO

A surprise return here, as a very serious Wardlow mowed down Garrison immediately with shoulders to the midsection and boots in the corner. Five powerbombs led to Paul Turner calling the match, as Wardlow left through the crowd. It should be noted, Wardlow didn’t play to the crowd at all while doing his powerbomb symphony.

-Renee Paquette is backstage with Konosuke Takeshita & Don Callis, who said the AEW foundation has been shook to its core since Sammy Guevara pinned Chris Jericho at WrestleDream that the quack doctors wouldn’t clear Guevara tonight. Thanks to the recommendation of Will Ospreay, Callis has named Kyle Fletcher as Guevara’s replacement. Callis said no one remembers who wins the battles; they remember who wins the war, a war that Callis will win.

-Excalibur told us about the audio issues TBS had during the Adam Cole & Kingdom segment, so they re-aired it with corrected audio this time.

The Acclaimed & Daddy Ass defeated The Butcher, The Blade & Kip Sabian (w/Penelope Ford)

(I have no idea if this was actually for the Trios Titles, as this match was pretty much there for Excalibur to plug the matches upcoming for Title Tuesday next week. That included the addition of Swerve Strickland vs. Bryan Danielson and Rey Fenix vs. Jon Moxley 3 for the International Title.)

Butcher, Blade & Sabian tried to attack at the bell, but the brawl spilled outside, which allowed The Acclaimed & Daddy Ass to scissor in the ring as the match officially started. Butcher & Blade took the fight to Caster, as Sabian followed with a springboard moonsault to the floor on both Caster & Bowens heading to commercial.

Caster was isolated the entire break before Bowens made the hot tag immediately when they returned. The match broke down soon after, allowing Bowens to hit Scissor Me Timbers on Blade and a springboard Sabian with a superkick. Bowens & Caster hit their over the top slam on Sabian to get the win.

-The final installment of Toni Storm: Portrait of a Star is shown with Storm telling RJ City he doesn’t know what it’s like to live in the spotlight, something everyone tries to take away from you. Storm sits awake at night wonder if she still has it, as City breaks the news to Storm that she isn’t even old, as Storm realizes she’s timeless. This was absurd and I loved every second of it. We’re informed Timeless Toni Storm premieres tonight.

Juice Robinson & The Gunns make their way to the ring after footage was shown of Switchblade Jay White being laid out last week, as speculation of who was responsible and who was wearing the familiar MJF devil mask. Austin Gunn said it was Story Time with the Bang Bang Gang and ran down MJF’s promo last week against White, saying the reason MJF jumped Switchblade last week was because he was scared. Robinson demanded MJF come to the ring if he’s a man.

MJF came to the stage, started an Ass Boys chant and called Robinson “Talentless Taint”, which Robinson replied he had a rock hard taint, something I can’t believe I just typed. MJF conducted a duel chant of the nicknames and rattled off a list of the horrible things he’s done in his AEW career, involving throwing Chris Jericho off a cage, whipped Cody Rhodes, injured kids during dodge ball and called Tony Khan a f’n mark. MJF didn’t attack tofu Jay White and challenged Bullet Club Gold to a Stockton Street Fight. MJF hit the ring and the heels bailed long enough for Switchblade Jay White to appear behind MJF and lay him out with a Blade Runner. The Bang Bang Gang stood over MJF as White left with the AEW World Title.

White took the microphone on stage and said the AEW Title on his shoulder felt nice. MJF’s cheap tricks won’t work with him and said he’s not fooling anyone when saying he wasn’t responsible for White’s attack. They know the real MJF, a dirty, pathetic, liar and a slimy, gutless, coward. AEW needs an Elite champion, something MJF is not and issued a challenge for November 18th at Full Gear for the AEW World Title. MJF accepted the challenge and the main event for Full Gear is set.

-Renee Paquette is backstage with HOOK & Orange Cassidy, who said they were close to winning their match at WrestleDream, but HOOK is still a great champion. HOOK said it was Cassidy who should be getting the title shot against Fenix next week instead of Moxley. Cassidy said yeah, but Moxley was champion for about 3 weeks, while Cassidy was champion for…11 months. Everyone stood there awkwardly eating chips, except Paquette, who Excalibur told us prefers ketchup chips.

Kenny Omega & Chris Jericho defeated Konosuke Takeshita & Kyle Fletcher (w/Don Callis)

(I was worried this would be a quick TV match, but luckily it went two commercial breaks, so we ended up in a very solid match. Similar to his showing at WrestleDream, I thought Kyle Fletcher was a standout in this and hope, if Mark Davis is out a lengthy time, continues to get shown on TV. The post match was the bigger story here, as Don Callis appears to have a new Family member and it will only benefit that man as a result.)

Callis joined commentary, as we’re informed Kyle Davis suffered an injury at the PPV and wishes him a quick recovery. Jericho & Omega made fast tags early to isolate Takeshita, who was dropped with a double suplex. Takeshita did a series of ducks of clothesline attempts and hit a Takeshita-line to gain control heading into commercial.

Right when they returned from break, Jericho hit the Lionsault on Fletcher and make the hot tag to Omega, who ran wild with Polish hammers. Fletcher in fact escaped You Can’t Escape, but Takeshita couldn’t say the same, as Omega hit the rolling fireman’s carry followed by a corner backstabber on Fletcher. Omega & Takeshtia traded shots until Fletcher blindsided Omega with a Snap Dragon. Takeshita & Fletcher traded Helluva Kicks and Blue Thunder Michinoku Drivers for a double two count. Omega fought off a Tombstone into a Snap Dragon, as a groggy Jericho made the tag, unloaded ten corner punches and corner hurricanrana on Fletcher. Takeshita flew in with a clothesline, Omega hit a pump knee and Fletcher hit multiple thrust kicks and brainbuster for a complete reset. Fletcher & Jericho had a striking battle until both colliding on a double clothesline, which led us to our second commercial break of the match.

Jericho had the Walls of Jericho locked on Fletcher and it took multiple Takeshita boots to break it up. Omega made the tag and had a slugfest with Fletcher, who held his own initially, but a knee lift, powerbomb and charging knee got two. Takeshita put a stop to a V-Trigger, but suffered a knee to the back and Snap Dragon. Fletcher tried a Michinoku Driver, but Omega shoved him into a Judas Effect, as he fell back into One Winged Angel for the win. Callis is screaming how Fletcher screwed him and his family.

As Callis was trash talking from the stage, Jericho & Omega were blindsided by Powerhouse Hobbs, as he laid out Jericho with spinebuster. Omega was tossed to the floor, viciously beaten down before being launched into the third row. Hobbs trapped Omega head first between a railing before heading back to the ring where Callis & Takeshita taped Omega to the ropes. Jericho tried saving Omega, but Hobbs cracked him in the ribs with a chair. Omega’s hand actually came free from the tape, so Hobbs & Takeshita held him while Callis gave a chair shot to the head. Excalibur informed us after the opening match, Nick Jackson had to be taken to the hospital, as Matt Jackson & Hangman Page left with him, so Omega didn’t have his Elite partners to save him.

-Renee Paquette is backstage with MJF in the trainer’s office and asks how he’s feeling when The Acclaimed & Daddy Ass walked in from behind. Caster started massaging MJF, who snapped and said he’s had enough of Caster tweeting and stalking him. Caster wanted a scissor, but MJF told him to get lost. MJF then called Adam Cole, but his message went to voicemail, as MJF looked dejected.

**********

-A vignette of Samoa Joe is shown saying he knows what it takes to be a champion and he’s very satisfied, as he’s been a champion every place he’s been. That lies the problem, saying he’s focused, hungry and while MJF earned his respect, everyone needs to realize when Joe is hungry, he’s going to eat.

“Timeless” Toni Storm defeated Skye Blue

(This was deemed the debut of “Timeless” Toni Storm, who continues to be one of my favorite characters in all of wrestling. She’s fully committed to this new character and I hope this ends up with her regaining the Women’s Title or even the TBS Title down the line. I think the evolution of this character is just getting going, I can’t wait for what’s next.)

The black and white screen is shown, as Storm got her Hollywood starlet entrance, as Taz said she’s timeless and going to live forever. Storm is so timeless she has no time to worry about how her makeup is smeared and wanted to shake hands with Blue, but instead hit a short arm lariat. After a few hair mares, Storm posed for the crowd before Blue shoved her down and Storm was insulted. Blue went up top, but was cut off and Storm hit a hip attack to the floor and literally threw it to commercial saying “we’ll be right back after these very, very important sponsors.”

Blue spun out of Storm Zero into a roll up for two and lit up Storm with forearms. Blue followed with a rising up knee and enzugiri before going to the top for a high cross body for another near fall. Storm slipped through Skye Fall and hit a sitout chokeslam bomb for two. Storm was insulted by the two count and ate a Blue thrust kick as a result. Storm answered with a snap German, posed in the corner saying she’s ready for her close-up, complete with a zoom in, before hitting Sweet Cheek Music and Storm Zero for the victory.

-Stokely Hathaway is backstage with Renee Paquette and informed Eddie Kingston, since he’s the commissioner of Ring of Honor, there will be a 4 Way on Rampage to determine who gets the next shot at the ROH World Title. Hathaway informed Kingston he will have to be on commentary for that match, as Ring of Honor needs a World Champion who smells like Tom Ford, not Burger King & Newports.

Adam Copeland addresses All Elite Wrestling

Tony Schiavone welcomed Copeland to the ring to a massive ovation from the Stockton crowd. Copeland said Schiavone’s voice was the soundtrack to his childhood, but politely asked him to hit the bricks. Copeland said it was fun hearing chants of Adam, something he’s never heard before. Years ago he was told he’d never wrestle again, but it’s 2023 and he’s standing in an AEW ring. Copeland said the AEW World Title would sure look good around his waist and lists many first time matches he could have, including Jon Moxley, Kenny Omega, Miro, Powerhouse Hobbs, Jay White & Juice Robinson. The main reason he’s in AEW is that he sat down with his family, asking if he should retire, which his daughter, Lyric, said he should go and have fun with Uncle Jay. Copeland calls Christian Cage to the ring and the TNT Champion obliges.

Copeland said for 40 years, they have been best friends, it’s why they got into professional wrestling. Copeland said he knows Cage wonders why he did what he did at WrestleDream and said he saw Cage standing over Sting, someone Cage idolized as a kid. Cage was Sting, while Copeland was Lex Luger growing up and he couldn’t stand by watching Cage Con-Chair-To Sting. Copeland said Nick Wayne & Luchasaurus will drop Cage like a bad habbit once they soak up all his wrestling knowledge. For the first time in over 20 years, it’s time for Copeland & Cage to team together again and face teams like FTR & The Young Bucks, showing people why they’re one of the greatest tag teams of all time. Copeland wants to end their careers as a tag team and show what they’re capable of.

Cage took the microphone, hugged Copeland and said “Go F Yourself” before walking off. Cage soaked in the boos from the crowd on the ramp and reminded Copeland of what he’ll be up against next week on Dynamite. Luchasaurus & Nick Wayne walked to the stage and had a stare down to end the show.

International title defense set for AEW Dynamite Anniversary episode

A rematch of one of the most critically-acclaimed matches in AEW history is set for Dynamite’s 4th Anniversary episode.

Nick Jackson won a three-way bout on this week’s Dynamite to earn a shot at Rey Fenix & the AEW International Championship at Dynamite Anniversary set for Wednesday, October 4. Jackson defeated Brian Cage & Claudio Castagnoli to earn the title shot.

Fenix vs. Jackson on the November 20, 2019 AEW Dynamite earned a ****3/4 star rating from Dave Meltzer and remains one of the most highly-praised bouts in the four-year history of the promotion. The bout took place on just the eighth episode in Dynamite’s history, and has yet to be rematched in a singles bout.

Dynamite Anniversary will be held at the Stockton Arena in Stockton, California, the promotion’s debut show in that city. Next week’s Rampage show will also be taped that night.

The first Dynamite was held October 2, 2019 in Washington, DC at the Capital One Arena.

The International Championship match is the only item currently announced for the 4th Anniversary show. The current lineup:

  • AEW International Championship: Rey Fenix defends against Nick Jackson

Tony Khan to make ‘huge announcement’ on AEW Dynamite

In an interview released Wednesday by PWInsider, AEW president and head of creative Tony Khan said he will make “a huge announcement” on tonight’s anniversary edition of AEW Dynamite.

Khan also promised great wrestling along with some additional “fun announcements” as well.

Khan was asked for a hint about who the “joker” participant is for tonight’s Casino Ladder Match.

“I will not give you any insight into who the joker is going to be. I will not tell you that, but I will go back to the announcement instead and tell you that it’s been something a long time coming. I’m very excited about it and proud of it and it’ll really add a lot to the company, I think.”

Khan also addressed recent reports of the executive vice presidents losing power, calling it “pretty disingenuous stuff” and noting that the structure of the company changed in late-2019 when he realized that “there were probably too many different people with input on segments” and that the show “wasn’t as organized as it could be.”

Khan also spoke about the emergence of the Owen Hart Foundation and how it came together with Owen’s widow, Martha.

“He’s a favorite of so many of ours and it meant a lot to be able to connect with Martha and offer this olive branch and say that we would love to have you and Owen be a part of AEW. We would love to work with the Owen Hart Foundation and reestablish the legacy of Owen Hart in professional wrestling where we haven’t seen him in terms of being in video games and action figures and on TV, on wrestling each week and celebrating his great career. It’s just we don’t hear that name enough: Owen Hart.

(Martha) was very principled and she wanted to make sure this was something that would benefit the Owen Hart Foundation, which it will, that it was something that will be respectful of Owen’s name and legacy and of Martha herself. Absolutely, that’s what we’re here to do and so I’m very, very excited about it,” he explained.

AEW Dynamite video highlights: One-year anniversary show

Jon Moxley retained the AEW World Championship in the main event of last night’s first anniversary episode of Dynamite.

Moxley defeated Lance Archer with a crucifix after eating Archer’s Blackout finishing move. After the match, Archer attacked Moxley. Eddie Kingston, who was at the commentary desk with The Lucha Bros, sent Penta El Zero M and Rey Fenix to the ring to chase Archer away.

Kingston then came to the ring and cut a promo, praising Moxley for carrying AEW for its first year.

After raising Moxley’s arm in victory, Kingston hit the champ with a spinning backfist. Kingston then applied a rear naked choke. Dynamite went off the air with Kingston vowing to “get” Moxley.

Three other title matches took place on the anniversary show.

Cody retained the TNT Championship by the skin of his teeth in a time limit draw. Orange Cassidy had Cody in a mousetrap cradle as the time limit neared. Before the referee could complete his three count, the 20-minute time limit expired.

Hikaru Shida retained her AEW Women’s World Championship with a win over Big Swole.

FTR retained their AEW World Tag Team titles with a win against Best Friends in the show opener. Miro and Kip Sabian attacked Best Friends after the match.
