UFC on ESPN+ 104 live results: Brandon Moreno vs. Amir Albazi

For the first time since July 2019, the Octagon heads back to Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, as UFC on ESPN+ 104 returns to Rogers Place.

This will be the first UFC event to take place under the newest set of the Unifed Rules of MMA which now sees 12-to-6 elbows as legal, as well as the elimination of the rule where one hand on the mat signifies a grounded fighter.

The main event is a five-round flyweight bout that could serve as a title eliminator as former UFC flyweight champion Brandon Moreno takes on Amir Albazi. Moreno is looking to end a two-fight losing skid and get back into a title fight while Albazi comes in riding a six-fight win streak. He has a perfect 5-0 mark during his UFC tenure and is looking to secure his first shot at UFC gold.

Derrick Lewis was poised to take on the undefeated Jhonata Diniz, but chose to withdraw on extremely short notice after missing Friday’s ceremonial weigh-ins due to an unspecified health issue.

In the co-main event, it’s another potential title eliminator bout as Erin Blanchfield battles former UFC women’s strawweight champion Rose Namajunas in a women’s flyweight bout. Also on the main card is a light heavyweight bout pitting Caio Machado vs. Brendson Ribeiro; a middleweight fight between Marc-Andre Barriault and Dustin Stoltzfus; and Mike Malott vs. Trevin Giles in welterweight action.

The fourth round was the key round, as it could’ve gone either way, and the other four rounds were split. I was surprised they all gave it to Blanchfield. She should be in a title fight next, but it’ll be a wait, so I suspect she’ll fight one more time in the meantime, and it wouldn’t surprise me if it’s Alexa Grasso, who Blanchfield brought up.

This week’s back issue: January 8, 2007 Observer Newsletter: Vince McMahon & Donald Trump, UFC 66

Sunday Update

[email protected]

– We have three weekend shows already up on the site. We did two shows on Friday, one with Jim Ross talking about his new book, his career, Bill Watts, Black Saturday, Sting, Tony Schiavone, and tons of other topics, and then Garrett and I went through a show talking about all the news of the week including things that needed to be said regarding the dichotomy of wrestling media.

Last night’s show with Bryan focused on New Japan Resurgence, Smackdown, and Collision as well as the rest of the news.

– We don’t have more of an update on Eddie Kingston.  The only thing we heard today is that they were crossing their fingers and hoping he’d be okay. There was no word whether he’d be able to do Anarchy in the Arena past they were hoping he could. In the last move of his last man standing match with Gabe Kidd, Kidd suplexed Kingston off the apron through a table and Kingston’s leg crashed hard on the guard rail.  He wasn’t able to get up for a long time. It was scary but it did make the angle when Jack Perry & The Young Bucks attacked him even more of a heel deal.

We did hear from people at the show who said the issue was the crowd micing in Ontario and not that the crowd was dead.

– I want to wish every mother out there a Happy Mother’s Day. For those of you who have mothers, cherish them and make it a special day for them. For those who don’t, please remember them because you wouldn’t be here without them.

– It was announced at Resurgence that the first Fantastica Mania show ever in the U.S. will be on 7/13 at the San Jose Civic Auditorium.

– We’re looking for reports on tonight’s WWE house show in Macon, GA which has a King of the Ring and Queen of the Ring tournament match with Kofi Kingston vs. Rey Mysterio and Shayna Baszler vs. Maxxine Dupri in tournament matches. The Kingston-Mysterio winner faces Gunther on Raw on Monday while the Baszler-Dupri winner faces Iyo Sky tomorrow.

– Also on tomorrow’s show is Jey Uso vs. Ilja Dragunov and Zoey Stark vs. Lyra Valkyria in tournament matches. We’re looking for results, finishes, and highlights to [email protected]. We’re also doing polls for New Japan Resurgence so you can leave a thumbs up, down or middle, best and worst match to [email protected]

– WWE from last night in Chattanooga:

  • Miz & R-Truth retained the Raw tag titles over JD McDonagh & Finn Balor
  • LA Knight b Santos Escobar to advance in the King of the Ring tournament. He faces Tama Tonga on Friday.
  • Austin Theory & Grayson Waller b Tommaso Ciampa & Johnny Gargano to retain the Smackdown tag titles
  • Liv Morgan b Nia Jax in a street fight
  • Damian Priest b Jey Uso to keep the world title
  • Tiffany Stratton b Michin to advance in the Queen of the Ring tournament. She faces Bianca Belair on Friday.

– There were only two Google search items that made the top 20 this week related to boxing, wrestling, and MMA, both from yesterday. The Vasiliy Lomachenko vs. George Kambosis fight was No. 3 with 100,000 searches. Derrick Lewis from yesterday’s UFC show was No. 12 with 50,000.

– If you watched the New Japan show last night and noted Ian Riccaboni talking about the Young Bucks being in Vancouver and then being at the show, it was just an honest mistake. Before the show, he was watching a feed of the show and a taped segment with the Young Bucks aired and he wasn’t aware it was taped, so when they did arrive, he assumed they must have flown in from Vancouver.

– There will be another three-hour AEW block this coming Saturday night but back on TNT with Collision at 8 p.m. and Rampage at 10 p.m.

– Kento Miyahara beat Jun Saito today in Yokohama to win the AJPW Champion Carnival tournament. They also announced EC 3 would be defending his NWA world title on 5/29 at Korakuen Hall. The hope is that will start an All Japan/NWA relationship.

I haven’t heard anything on the Miyahara-Saito match although Miyahara singles matches are usually great. As far as big matches people have noted to us, Shuji Ishikawa vs. Kazusada Higuchi in the King of DDT tournament was recommended. AJ Styles vs. Randy Orton on Smackdown and most of Collision was very strong in the ring. The two best bouts were Kingston vs. Gabe Kidd and Jon Moxley vs. Shota Umino for the IWGP title. The latter was great and I’ve had people say it was Moxley’s best singles match ever, which covers ridiculous ground. The crowd micing hurt it but it was an exceptional match.

– Another big match this weekend was the Joey Janela vs. Nick Wayne Iron Man Match from Defy on Friday night in Seattle. That can be found in full here.

– Sami Zayn did a comedy show in Los Angeles last night at the Vermont Hollywood.  Here is a report on it from Chris Campol:

It was a great time. He opened with a twenty-minute stand-up set. Told some really funny wrestling stories. Then he brought out a few comics who are wrestling fans one at a time for a chat. They had a couch and chairs on stage. At one point someone started heckling Sami, and after some back and forth he was invited on stage. After some more insults, the guy took off his wig, glasses, and fake mustache, and it was Johnny Knoxville. They acted like they were gonna fight, and then Becky Lynch came out to be the peacemaker. She was absolutely hysterical. Becky stuck around for the rest of the show.

They brought up a few volunteers from the crowd to see who could cut the best promo. Cathy Kelley was there to give them prompts, which she totally improvised on the spot. She was great. Eventually, Knoxville came back out with flowers trying to make up with Sami. They hugged but then Wee Man came out and low-blowed Sami, then gave him a frickin bodyslam. Holy s*** chants. He sold it like he was dead and that was the end of the show.

For someone who, by his own admission, had no idea what he was doing, Sami was awesome here. As seen in WWE, his comic timing is really spot on. Hopefully, he does more of this kind of thing. He really has a knack for it.”

– A&E tonight has WWE Rivals with Ric Flair vs. Dusty Rhodes at 8 pm. and Most Wanted Treasures on Ultimate Warrior at 9 p.m. I don’t know if they’ve done a WWE Rivals using an NWA feud before, as Flair vs. Rhodes wasn’t even WCW, it was NWA and Jim Crockett Promotions.

– The death of entertainment news host Sam Rubin of KTLA in Los Angeles does have a pro wrestling connection. When he was a kid, Mike Lano, Mark & Gary Dawson (sons of Richard Dawson of Family Feud fame), and Rubin would go every Saturday to the newsstands together to read the wrestling magazines from the 70s. They’d also at times go to used magazine stores to try and buy old wrestling magazines. He also did backyard wrestling matches at Emerson Junior High and University High in Santa Monica.

Rubin was 64. He was on TV Thursday morning but called in sick Friday and had a heart attack.  He was a lifelong fan and would interview wrestlers on his newcast. All the major stations in Los Angeles covered his death, showing him interviewing everyone from Hulk Hogan to Prince Harry to Presidents Clinton, Obama, and Bush. (thanks to Mike Lano)

– Best of the Super Juniors at 5:30 a.m. Eastern from Korakuen Hall tomorrow morning

  • A block-Kevin Knight vs. Blake Christian
  • B block-Francesco Akira vs. Ninja Mack
  • A block-Hayata vs Clark Connors
  • B block-Robbie Eagles vs. Drilla Moloney
  • A block-TJP vs. Yoshinobu Kanemaru

  • A block-Titan vs. Bushi
  • B block-Sho vs.Kushida
  • A block-Desperado vs. Kosei Fujita
  • B block-Hiromu Takahashi vs. Douki

– Derrick Lewis, who knocked out Rodrigo Nascimento in UFC’s main event last night, took off his shorts and fanned Nascimento as he was trying to revive him. He then took off his cup and threw it to the media table and then pulled down his underwear to moon the crowd. He then said he appreciated the crowd in St. Louis for letting him show them his naked ass.

– Dani Mo will wrestle Bhagawati Khadka on Mount Everest on 5/23. They are attempting to say it’ll be a world record for a match held at the highest elevation. I don’t know what the record is but Mexico City is 7,349 feet.

– When Mercedes Mone threw out the first pitch at the Boston Red Sox game yesterday, the PA announcer first called her Sasha Banks and claimed she was the first woman to main event WrestleMania. I thought that was Ronda Rousey, Charlotte Flair, and Becky Lynch.  But then he called her Mercedes Mone from Boston (thanks to Ron Lemieux)

– Jerry Lawler was inducted into the Indiana Sports Hall of Fame on Friday night.

– TV Guide lists “Iron Claw” as one of the best things to stream this month. It debuted on MAX on Friday night. They wrote that people who thought this was a pro wrestling movie and skipped it missed out on a tear-jerker family drama. (thanks to Matt Schreiner)

– Kurt Angle will make an appearance for Absolute Intense Wrestling on 5/24 in Cleveland at Temple Live.  He will have a meet and greet at the show.

– Jay Lethal posted about his late mother on Instagram.

– Defy from Friday night in Seattle: Nick Wayne b Joey Janels 5 falls to 4 in a 60:00 Iron Man match, Marina Shafir b Vert Vixen to win the Defy women’s title, Big Damo & Axel Tischer (Sanity) b Ricky Gibson & Eddie Parl to keep the Progress world tag titles, Danhausen b Randy Myers, KENTA b Bryan Keith to retain the Defy title.

UFC 277 live results: Julianna Pena vs. Amanda Nunes 2

Welcome to F4WOnline.com’s live coverage of UFC 277: Pena vs. Nunes 2, emanating from the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas.

The Octagon is back in Dallas for the first time in nearly four years with two title fights including one of the biggest rematches in women’s MMA history as the greatest female fighter of all-time looks to avenge a historic loss.

UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion Julianna Pena makes her first title defense against the woman she defeated for the title, former champion Amanda Nunes, in the main event. Pena scored the massive upset at UFC 269 in December, submitting Nunes in the second round. The two coached the most recent edition of The Ultimate Fighter to lead to the rematch as Nunes looks to regain the title and once again become a two-division champion.

In the co-main event, an Interim UFC Flyweight Championship will be on the line as former UFC Flyweight Champion Brandon Moreno takes on Kai Kara-France. This is also a rematch as Moreno scored a decision win over Kara-France at UFC 245 in December 2019. The interim title came about after Deiveson Figueiredo claimed he was injured and unable to fight on this card while also saying he didn’t want to defend against Moreno, who is the top contender.

The rest of the main card sees a heavyweight bout between Derrick Lewis and Sergei Pavlovich, a flyweight bout pitting Alexandre Pantoja against Alex Perez, and the main card kicks off with a light heavyweight opener as Magomed Ankalaev takes on Anthony Smith. The featured prelims return to ABC with four fights, capped off with a welterweight bout pitting Alex Morono against Matthew Semelsberger.

Follow along with our live coverage of the event beginning at 6 p.m. Eastern time with preliminary action all the way through the main card.

We are looking for your thoughts on tonight’s event, so send a thumbs up, a thumbs down or a thumbs in the middle along with a best fight and a worst fight to Dave at [email protected].

WON NEWSLETTER: October 4, 2021 Observer Newsletter: WWE Extreme Rules review, G1 Climax updates

WWE’s Extreme Rules show on 9/26 at the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, OH was decent. Most of the matches were good, but there was nothing blow away.

The show was built around two bouts, Roman Reigns vs. Demon Finn Balor for the Universal title and Becky Lynch vs. Bianca Belair for the women’s title. Both had gimmicked finishes.

The Demon match ended with Demon ont the top rope when the top rope suddenly collapsed and he fell into the ring injured, and got pinned by a spear. The bout had been the most exciting on the show, but at one point the idea was that Demon had died. Then his music played and he acted as though he was resurrected, and in fact, that was the verbiage used, and he made a comeback until the rope broke.

In the Smackdown women’s title match, Belair powered out of the disarmer and set up the KOD when Sasha Banks ran into attack Belair for the DQ. Banks also laid out Lynch after the match to set up a three-way program.

Ciryl Gane wins interim heavyweight title at UFC 265

Image: Josh Hedges/Zuffa LLC

Ciryl Gane defeated Derrick Lewis by third round TKO at UFC 265 Saturday night to take home the interim heavyweight title, spoiling Lewis’ return to his hometown of Houston, Texas.

The undefeated Gane (10-0) was in control from start to finish, using speed and smarts to dodge Lewis’ dangerous attacks that flattened previous opponents. He now likely moves on to fight heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou if he and the UFC can rebuild a bridge that was burned in failed negotiations with Jon Jones and then this fight being made.

The beginning of the end came in the third round when Gane landed a kick flush to Lewis’ lead leg. Lewis was clearly which allowed the confident Gane to come inside with a jab that opened up a two-punch combo that opened up the door. He landed hard uppercuts to a covered up Lewis who still tried to fight back with power uppercuts and pull off another incredible upset.

It was not to be as Gane evaded those shots and landed a head kick to a waning Lewis who eventually slumped after a punch to his left eye that he was complaining earlier was poked. After some heavy hammer punches from Gane to a covered up Lewis, the fight was stopped.

This was Gane’s sixth UFC fight since debuting in August 2019. The loss snapped a four-fight win streak for Lewis who was getting his second UFC heavyweight title opportunity.

UFC 265 live results: Derrick Lewis vs. Ciryl Gane

Welcome to F4WOnline.com’s live coverage of UFC 265: Lewis vs. Gane, emanating from the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.

The Octagon makes a quick return to Houston after hosting UFC 262 in May, with this event headlined by a hometown hero looking to strap some UFC gold around his waist, albiet not an official undisputed title.

Houston’s own Derrick Lewis will take on Ciryl Gane in a bout for the Interim UFC Heavyweight Championship in the main event. This fight came together after UFC Heavyweight Champion Francis Ngannou was unavailable to fight on this show, and the promotion was heavily criticized for putting this together. Lewis comes into this fight riding a four-fight win streak, while Gane is undefeated in his career. Gane, though, is coming in on a short camp, as he just fought six weeks ago.

In the co-main event, former UFC and WEC Featherweight Champion and future Hall Of Famer Jose Aldo takes on Pedro Munhoz in a bantamweight bout that will keep the winner in the title picture. Also on the main card is a pivotal welterweight bout between Michael Chiesa and Vicente Luque, a strawweight rematch between Tecia Torres and Angela Hill, and a battle of bantamweight prospects as Song Yadong battles Casey Kenney.

Lewis vs. Gane interim heavyweight title fight set for UFC 265

With Francis Ngannou unavailable to fight in the UFC’s desired timeframe, the promotion is moving forward with a Derrick Lewis vs. Ciryl Gane interim heavyweight title fight that will headline UFC 265 on August 7th.

ESPN’s Brett Okamoto first reported the news that Ngannou was unable to defend his title in June or August due to traveling and Dana White thought both Lewis and Gane were worthy of title shots.

Okamoto got a quote from Ngannou’s agent that said they were in complete shock about the news considering the history of the division. Ngannou tweeted, “I remember my interim title fight against Jairzinho …. oh wait: — a nod to his desire to have his May 2020 fight against Jair Rozenstruik for the interim title due to then-champion Stipe Miocic not wanting to fight due to COVID-19.

The last interim heavyweight title awarded was to Fabricio Werdum for his defeat of Mark Hunt at UFC 180 in November 2014.

Lewis (seen above) is riding a four-fight win streak and last knocked out Curtis Blaydes in February. Gane defeated Alexander Volkov on Saturday via unanimous decision to get his record to a perfect 9-0.

The event will be held in Houston, Texas — the hometown of Lewis. The co-main event features two-division champion Amanda Nunes defending the bantamweight title against Julianna Pena.

Ngannou defeated Stipe Miocic for the title by second round knockout in March. Discussions of a title fight vs. former light heavyweight champion Jon Jones stalled due to Jones asking for more money for the superfight and the UFC having no interest in meeting his demands.

SUNDAY NEWS UPDATE

Our weekend show, covering UFC, Smackdown, WrestleMania and other subjects is up on the site right now.

Dana White indicated they are looking at 7/10 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas for the Conor McGregor vs. Dustin Poirier rematch. That would require Nevada to open up and allow them to run at full capacity.  If not, and they were to move the show to a city they can full full capacity, I’m thinking they’d run a different main event.

Tyron Woodley’s contract expired with last night’s fight. Dana White gave the indication that they weren’t looking at signing him. Last night’s loss to Vicente Luque was his fourth straight loss and he’s about to turn 39 years old in two weeks.

UFC 260 was the most searched for topic on the Internet yesterday in the U.S. with 1.2 million searches. The key names were Stipe Miocic, Francis Ngannou, Tyron Woodley and Sean O’Malley. Based on this number, it was not a monster PPV. Besides searches related to UFC 260, the only thing this past week regarding combat sports that made the list was that Ben Askren was No. 8 on Saturday with 200,000 searches.

We pretty much explained the reality behind the weirdness last night where Dana White said he was looking at Derrick Lewis and not Jon Jones for the first title defense by Francis Ngannou. Another aspect of this story is that UFC is trying to pick up profits as much as it can for the likely IPO, and since ESPN gets the PPV money, UFC makes the same either way, whether it’s Jones vs. Ngannou or Lewis vs. Ngannou, but Lewis would take the fight for less money.

Regarding judging last night, almost nobody except the judges thought Michal Oleksiejczuk beat Modestas Bukauskas. I was pretty surprised when Oleksiejczuk won. Based on media scores, they were 95 percent for Bukauskas.  Regarding the Miranda Maverick vs. Gillian Robertson fight where only one judge gave Robertson the second round, 96 percent of media scores gave Robertson round two, but that didn’t change the outcome as virtually everyone had it for Maverick either way.

Speaking of Ben Askren, whose interaction with Jake Paul at the Triller press conference is what put him on the list, this is his half comedic training video.

And speaking of comedy, this is the Dan Rodimer stuffwe talked about on last night’s show

At the Global NAACP TV Awards held last night, they listed prominent sports deaths of black athletes from the past year and included James (Kamala) Harris, Rocky Johnson and Shad Gaspard.

This article explains why such a high percentage of the deaths in wrestling from COVID came from Mexico but why the U.S. numbers are purported to be worse.  As one would figure, Mexico’s numbers aren’t quite accurate. I’m sure they aren’t in the U.S. either. The listed death total was 201,429 but the government acknowledged yesterday that the real number is more than 321,000, which per capita, is far worse than the U.S.  The government quietly published a report listing the deaths as of 2/14 being 294,287.  Mexico’s population is barely one-third that of the U.S. (thanks to Eric Krol)

WWE

  • We don’t have details on what role Logan Paul will have in WrestleMania past he is on the show and it will be in the Sami Zayn vs. Kevin Owens match. This was first reported by Ringside News.
  • Odds from www.BetOnline.ag for WrestleMania:
Bobby Lashley -115 vs. Drew McIntyre -115
Bianca Belair -300 vs, Sasha Banks +200
Rhea Ripley -200 vs, Asuka +150
    A.J. Styles & Omos -160 vs, New Day +120
The Fiend -500 vs. Randy Orton +300
Bad Bunny -850 vs. The Miz +450
  • Raw tomorrow has Matt Riddle vs Sheamus in a non-title match. If Sheamus wins, one would think he would get a U.S. title match at WrestleMania. There will also be an Asuka contract signing with Rhea Ripley.

UFC

  • SportsBetting.ag lists Francis Ngannou as a strong -185 favorite if he was to defend against Jon Jones. The original opening odds were -200, but that led to almost all bets coming in for Jones.  Last year when the fight was teased, Ngannou was listed at -145.
  • Joanne Calderwood vs. Lauren Murphy has been added to the 6/12 show.

OTHER NOTES
