UFC 283 live results: Teixeira vs. Hill, Figueiredo vs. Moreno 4

Welcome to F4WOnline.com’s live coverage of UFC 283: Teixeira vs. Hill, emanating from the Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The Octagon is back in Brazil for the first time since March 2020, and the promotion returns with two titles on the line, and, hopefully, two undisputed champions by the time the night ends.

The vacant UFC Light Heavyweight Championship is on the line, once again, in the main event as former champion Glover Teixeira looks to regain the title when he takes on Jamahal Hill. The vacant championship was supposed to be decided at UFC 282 in December, but Jan Blachowicz and Magomed Ankalaev fought to a draw, and this fight was quickly booked afterwards in order to try and determine a new champion. Teixeira is fighting for the first time since losing the title to Jiri Prochazka in June, while Hill comes in riding a three-fight win streak.

In the co-main event, it is the first time two men battle for the fourth time inside the Octagon as UFC Flyweight Champion Deiveson Figueiredo and Interim UFC Flyweight Champion Brandon Moreno look to unify the titles. The three-fight series has seen an even split, with each man scoring a win and the third contest being a draw. The winner becomes the rightful top guy at 125 pounds as the division moves forward following this.

Also on the main card is a big welterweight bout pitting Gilbert Burns against Neil Magny, a women’s flyweight bout between former UFC Women’s Strawweight Champion Jessica Andrade and Lauren Murphy, and an exciting light heavyweight title kicks off the main card as Paul Craig takes on Johnny Walker. The show also has ten fights on the prelims, capped off by the retirement bout of all-time legend and former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua.

Follow along with our live coverage of the event beginning at 5:30 p.m. Eastern time with preliminary action all the way through the main card.

We are looking for your thoughts on tonight’s event, so send a thumbs up, a thumbs down or a thumbs in the middle along with a best fight and a worst fight to Dave at [email protected].

SUNDAY NEWS UPDATE

Our weekend show covering all the major shows from Friday and Saturday is up on the site now. We’re looking for your thoughts on TripleMania, New Japan’s Budokan Hall show, New Japan’s Super J Cup and UFC 256, so you can leave a thumbs up, thumbs down or thumbs in the middle along with a best and worst match to [email protected]

Thanks to everyone for the nice thoughts this past week.  Jim Valley is doing better.  My mother is not in pain and watching her favorite movies and that’s as good as can be expected at this point.

As far as the scoring of the Figueiredo vs. Moreno fight, Judge Derek Cleary gave 48-46 on rounds one, three and give for Figueiredo, a 9-9 third round and only round four for Moreno.  Judge Sal D’Amato’s 47-47 score was rounds one and five for Figuieredo, two and four for Moreno and a 9-9 third.  Judge Junichiro Kamijo had one and two for Fuguieredo, four and five for Moreno and a 9-9 third. I had one, two and five for Figuieredo and a 10-8 third and 10-9 fourth for Moreno.  In fan voting, the majority of fans had the same rounds the same way as I did.  In total, MMA decisions reported 41.3 percent had it a draw, 31.0 percent had it for Figuieredo and 24.4 percent had it for Moreno. Media scores were 52 percent a draw and 48 percent for Figuieredo and none for Moreno. Dana White said that due to the draw, he is looking to rematch the fight as soon as possible.

As of earlier today, last night’s TripleMania had 591,000 views on YouTube. The last two matches, Kenny Omega vs. Laredo Kid and Pagano vs. Chessman hair vs. hair are pretty much  must-see matches, particularly given the handicap of virtually no fans (there were about 20 people allowed in).  The injury situation wasn’t too bad.  Mr.  Iguana’s stuff was legit.  He was knocked silly on a dropkick in the corner.  Pagano and Chessman were beat up but that’s a given, but no serious injuries.  Kenny Omega seemed fine after his dive and Michael Nakazawa was fine as well. Murder Clown could have had a bad situation but L.A. Park saved him.

Omega in a backstage interview gave the indication his next title defense in Mexico will be against El Hijo del Vikingo, which has the chance to be an incredible match. Omega will be on Impact on Tuesday as well as wrestling Joey Janela in  a no DQ match on  Dynamite on Wednesday.

WWE

  • Currently announced for Wednesday’s NXT TV show is Pete Dunne vs. Kyle O’Reilly, the winner gets Finn Balor in an NXT title match on 1/6 plus Rhea Ripley vs. Toni Storm and Karrion Kross wrestles.  In theory this should be more competitive than the prior two weeks were.

OTHER NEWS

  • ROH will be announcing its new PPV card on Friday during the one-hour pre-show. The plan is to create new storyline reasons for all the changes. The card needed changes due to the losses of Kenny King, Flamita, Bandido and EC3 due to the company’s COVID restrictions.
  • Nothing from pro wrestling this week trended on Google. UFC 256 last night was No. 3 with 550,000 searches, which indicates a very low PPV number, but we knew that going in. That said, the Deiveson Figueiredo vs. Brandon Moreno was one of the two best fights in UFC of 2020, and many people are calling the show from start-to-finish the show of the year.
  • Other Google trending numbers for combat sports over the past week were Anthony Joshua No. 8 yesterday with 200,000. Kevin Holland showed he had star power as he was No. 20 yesterday with 50,000. On Thursday, the death of Tom “Tiny” Lister, who played Zeus in WWE, was No. 2 with 2 million. Last Sunday, Logan Paul was no. 2 with 1 million searches.
  • There is a major sports story from the past few days regarding University of Florida forward Keyontae Johnson, who at last word was in critical but stable condition at a hospital, the team reported Sunday, one day after he collapsed on the court during a game at Florida State. The Southeastern Conference’s preseason player of the year was moved to a stretcher and carried off the court as teammates, coaches, staff, fans and others watched in disbelief. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, he was standing and suddenly fell forward and landed on his face. His eyes were open and he had blood on his face and neck, according to photos obtained by The Gainesville Sun. Johnson had tested positive for COVID-19 over the summer and his collapse was thought to be due to Myocarditis, a heart inflammation, and it brings up the possibility that the two are linked and possible longer-range complications of COVID and the ramifications of that in sports.
  • A documentary on Kurt Angle’s departure from WWE which includes me in it.

UFC 255 live results: Two flyweight title fights

20Welcome to F4WOnline.com’s live coverage of UFC 255: Figueiredo vs. Perez, emanating from the UFC APEX in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Two title fights headline the UFC’s November pay-per-view event as the Octagon remains in its home base in Las Vegas as the flyweights take center stage.

UFC Flyweight Champion Deiveson Figueiredo makes his first title defense of the 125-pound title when he welcomes the challenge of Alex Perez in the main event. Figueiredo defeated Joseph Benavidez to become the champion in July, and he was scheduled to defend against Cody Garbrandt, but he had to pull out due to injury. In steps Perez, winner of three straight fights and the first alumnus of the Contender Series to get a UFC title shot.

In the co-main event, UFC Women’s Flyweight Champion Valentina Shevchenko looks to continue her reign of dominance when she defends against Jennifer Maia. Shevchenko is coming off a successful title defense over Katlyn Chookagian in February, while Maia gets a title shot on the heels of a submission win over Joanne Calderwood in August.

Also on the main card is a welterweight bout with potential fireworks as Mike Perry battles Tim Means, a women’s flyweight bout between Katlyn Chookagian and Cynthia Calvillo, and the opener sees Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua and Paul Craig square off in a rematch after they fought to a draw in their first fight one year ago.

Among the fights on the preliminary card is a potential flyweight title eliminator bout between Brandon Moreno and Brandon Royval, and viral knockout sensation Joaquin Buckley looks to go viral again when he takes on Jordan Wright in a middleweight bout.

Follow along with our live coverage of the event beginning at 6:30 p.m. Eastern time with preliminary action all the way through the main card.

We are looking for your thoughts on tonight’s event, so send a thumbs up, a thumbs down or a thumbs in the middle along with a best fight and a worst fight to Dave at [email protected].

New UFC flyweight champion crowned at Fight Island

Image: Zuffa/Getty Images

The second time was a charm for Deiveson Figueiredo as he dominated Joseph Benavidez Saturday to win the vacant UFC flyweight title in the main event of the third Fight Island show.

Figueiredo physically dominated Benavidez early in the first round, ensnaring him three times in rear naked choke attempts and knocking him down another three times off punches. The third – off a right hand – dropped Benavidez at which time Figueiredo attacked, landing hard right elbows that bloodied him badly.

A fourth rear naked choke attempt was enough as Benavidez passed out at 4:48 of the first round, giving Figueiredo the technical submission victory.

This is the first UFC belt for the 32-year-old Brazilian which had been vacant since December 2019 when double champion Henry Cejudo relinquished it so he could focus on the bantamweight title instead. He has now won four straight and is 8-1 in the Octagon with six finishes.

Benavidez and Figueiredo were originally matched up in February, but Figueiredo (19-1) missed weight and was ineligible to win the title. He still defeated Benavidez by second round TKO that night and without any other real challengers, the UFC rematched the two instead. There was some question as to whether he would be able to compete Saturday

The 35-year-old Benavidez (28-7) is now 0-5 in UFC/WEC title fights.

UFC on ESPN+ 30 live results: Figueiredo vs. Benavidez 2

Welcome to F4WOnline.com’s live coverage of UFC On ESPN+ 30: Figueiredo vs. Benavidez 2, emanating from the Flash Forum on UFC Fight Island in Yas Island, Abu Dhabi.

The third event in the span of eight days to be held on UFC Fight Island in Abu Dhabi sees a vacant championship up for grabs in a continuance of a February fight.

Deiveson Figueiredo and Joseph Benavidez will pick up where they left off when they meet for the second time for the vacant UFC Flyweight Championship. They met in February, a fight that ended in controversy as Figueiredo scored a second-round TKO finish that was preceded by a clash of heads that did a lot of damage to Benavidez. However, Figueiredo missed weight for that fight and the flyweight title remained vacant. A rematch was set up, and both men made weight, so someone will leave Fight Island with the title wrapped around their waist.

In the co-main event, it is a key middleweight fight with two men vying to get back into the win column as Jack Hermansson takes on Kelvin Gastelum. Also on the main card is a lightweight fight between Marc Diakiese, a women’s flyweight fight between Ariane Lipski and Luana Carolina, and another flyweight bout as Alexandre Pantoja battles Askar Askarov.

Follow along with our live coverage of the event beginning at 5 p.m. Eastern time with preliminary action all the way through the main card.

Deiveson Figueiredo has been cleared to travel to Abu Dhabi. If he passes the rest of his tests, his flyweight title fight for the vacant title with Joseph Benavidez will take place on 7/18.  Figueiredo had suffered from COVID-19 in May. He tested positive in an antibodies test this past week but he and his management claimed it was due to already having the disease in the past.  He passed another test where he got the results today and has been cleared to travel.

UFC star Santiago Ponzinibbio noted that he tested positive for COVID-19 in late June.

Regarding last night’s UFC judging in the Max Holloway vs. Alexander Volkanovski title fight, it’s another example of the ten point must weakness.  Holloway won the fight overall.  Few argue that.  However, media scores were 68% for Holloway, meaning there were enough people the other way to where you have to say it’s reasonable under ten point must to go either way.  I had Holloway and could go 49-46 but I think any score from 49-46 Holloway to 48-47 Volkanovski is a reasonable score.  However, it is not reasonable to say Holloway didn’t win the overall fight.  It’s the issue we’ve talked about for 20 years and ten point must on occasion creates these situations.  Using either half points or a different usage of ten point must (10-9, only close round, 10-8 normal round, 10-7 decisive, 10-6 dominant) will wield better scoring but there are a lot of ways to improve scoring that won’t be done due to the nature of the commission overseeing process that doesn’t want change.  Last night Dana White blamed the judges.

In scoring, Mark Collett gave Volkanovski rounds three, four and five. Judge David Lethaby gave him three and four, but not five, which is weird since five was the only decisive round Volkanovski won. Clemens Werner also gave Volkanovski three through five.  Holloway clearly won one and two. Volkanovski clearly won five. Three and four were close.

Dana White said the show was trending ahead of any show except McGregor vs. Khabib.  Google trends indicate differently. The show did 2.7 million searches, the biggest thing on the Internet yesterday by a wide margin.  But that’s nowhere near record levels.  UFC 251, which would include searches for Jorge Masvidal and Kamaru Usman, did 2 million plus.  Other major searches were Paige VanZant, Max Holloway, Jose Aldo and Rose Namajunas, all top ten. The only other top 20 for the past week among boxing, wrestling and UFC was Mike Perry at No. 8 on Wednesday.

Even though Namajunas vs. Jessica Andrade was a  split decision, MMA Decisions website listed 100 percent scores for Namajunas.

UFC still without flyweight champion after Figueiredo KO win

Image: Zuffa/Josh Hedges/Getty

The MMA scales of justice were not on Joseph Benavidez’s side Saturday in Norfolk, VA, as he failed in his third attempt to wear UFC flyweight gold in a second round knockout loss to Deiveson Figueiredo.

The problem: Figueiredo didn’t walk out with the title either as he was ineligible to win the vacant strap because he missed weight by 2.5 pounds Friday. Therefore, the UFC is without a flyweight champion for the foreseeable future.

Figueiredo had Benavidez in trouble in the first, forcing him to fight off two armbar attempts. He looked unfazed by Benavidez’s strikes, pursuing his challenger around the cage and landing punches of his own.

The end came in the second round when Benavidez led in with his head (something the announce team noted earlier in the fight) and clashed heads with Figueiredo, opening up a bad cut over his left eye. As he tried to recover, Figueiredo hit a straight right to the mouth that floored Benavidez, followed by some equally hard hammer fists for the TKO finish with 1:54 left in the round.

Figueiredo told ESPN’s Brett Okamoto in a post-fight interview that he considers himself the champion because he won the fight. In his in-cage interview with Michael Bisping, neither Figueiredo or his team were subdued in their celebration despite the lack of winning the title.

The UFC stripped Henry Cejudo, also the company’s bantamweight champion, of the flyweight championship in order to move both divisions forward. Cejudo is scheduled to defend his title against Jose Aldo later this year. Unfortunately, UFC doesn’t have a lot of options for one of its most beleaguered divisions.

Should they give Figueiredo another opportunity, which seems likely even with the weight cut blunder, they could go with Jussier Formiga as a challenger even though he is coming off a loss to Benavidez. He did beat Figueiredo prior to that, however. Other options are coming off a single win, so there is no clear cut pecking order or star name.
