New champions crowned at UFC 283, Glover Teixeira & Shogun Rua retire

The light heavyweight title is vacant no more as Jamahal Hill defeated former champion Glover Teixeira in the main event of Saturday’s UFC 283 to win the title.

Hill won a unanimous decision in dominant fashion (50-44 x 3) for his first UFC title and fourth straight victory. With the win, he becomes the first-ever fighter off Dana White’s Contender Series to win a title.

Afterward, the 42-year-old Teixeira (33-9) retired in the cage, calling it good in a career that lasted more than two decades and began in Brazil — the same country in which last night’s pay-per-view took place.

He first won the title in October 2021 by defeating Jan Blachowicz and subsequently lost the following June to Jiri Prochazka in what many consider the best fight of 2022.

The title was vacated when Prochazka suffered a severe shoulder injury late last year. Blachowicz fought Magomed Ankalaev to a draw in December, resulting in White making a different fight for the title.

**********

In the co-main event, interim flyweight champion Brandon Moreno defeated reigning champion Deiveson Figueiredo by third round TKO to unify the titles.

The doctor stopped the fight between rounds as Figueiredo’s right eye was so swollen, he couldn’t see.

It was the fourth fight between the two dating back to December 2020 and likely will be their last as Figueiredo announced afterward that he is moving up to bantamweight.

After their first fight was a majority draw, they split the next two fights. It’s Moreno’s second reign with the undisputed title.

*********

Teixeira’s retirement wasn’t the only one for a former Brazilian UFC light heavyweight champion as Mauricio “Shogun” Rua officially retired after his loss to Ihor Potieria by first round knockout.

It was the third straight defeat for the 41-year-old, ending a career that also began more than two decades ago.

First rising to stardom in the rings of PRIDE, Rua debuted in the UFC with a September 2007 loss to Forrest Griffin. He rebounded with back-to-back TKO wins over Chuck Liddell and Mark Coleman.

He lost in his first bid to win the title in a controversial decision loss to then-champion Lyoto Machida in October 2009. He defeated Machida by first round knockout in their May 2010 rematch before losing the title to Jon Jones the following March. He would never fight for the title again.

*********

Former UFC and WEC featherweight champion Jose Aldo was officially announced as being inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame during the pay-per-view.

After a three-fight win streak at bantamweight, Aldo lost to Merab Dvalishvili last August and retired shortly afterward.

UFC 283 live results: Teixeira vs. Hill, Figueiredo vs. Moreno 4

Welcome to F4WOnline.com’s live coverage of UFC 283: Teixeira vs. Hill, emanating from the Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The Octagon is back in Brazil for the first time since March 2020, and the promotion returns with two titles on the line, and, hopefully, two undisputed champions by the time the night ends.

The vacant UFC Light Heavyweight Championship is on the line, once again, in the main event as former champion Glover Teixeira looks to regain the title when he takes on Jamahal Hill. The vacant championship was supposed to be decided at UFC 282 in December, but Jan Blachowicz and Magomed Ankalaev fought to a draw, and this fight was quickly booked afterwards in order to try and determine a new champion. Teixeira is fighting for the first time since losing the title to Jiri Prochazka in June, while Hill comes in riding a three-fight win streak.

In the co-main event, it is the first time two men battle for the fourth time inside the Octagon as UFC Flyweight Champion Deiveson Figueiredo and Interim UFC Flyweight Champion Brandon Moreno look to unify the titles. The three-fight series has seen an even split, with each man scoring a win and the third contest being a draw. The winner becomes the rightful top guy at 125 pounds as the division moves forward following this.

Also on the main card is a big welterweight bout pitting Gilbert Burns against Neil Magny, a women’s flyweight bout between former UFC Women’s Strawweight Champion Jessica Andrade and Lauren Murphy, and an exciting light heavyweight title kicks off the main card as Paul Craig takes on Johnny Walker. The show also has ten fights on the prelims, capped off by the retirement bout of all-time legend and former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua.

Follow along with our live coverage of the event beginning at 5:30 p.m. Eastern time with preliminary action all the way through the main card.

We are looking for your thoughts on tonight’s event, so send a thumbs up, a thumbs down or a thumbs in the middle along with a best fight and a worst fight to Dave at [email protected].

UFC 275 live results: Two title fights, Weili vs. Joanna 2

Welcome to F4WOnline.com’s live coverage of UFC 275: Teixeira vs. Prochazka, emanating from the Singapore Indoor Stadium in Kallang, Singapore.

The Octagon returns to Singapore for first time since 2019, bringing a marquee pay-per-view event there for the first time ever, highlighted by two title fights and a rematch of one of the greatest fights in UFC history.

UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Glover Teixeira makes his first title defense against the top contender, Jiri Prochazka, in the main event. Teixeira became an unlikely 42-year-old champion when he submitted Jan Blachowicz in the second round at UFC 267 in October. It culminated a long journey for Teixeira. Prochazka gets a title shot in just his third UFC fight, but is coming off one of the best knockouts of 2021 with his knockout of Dominick Reyes in May 2021.

In the co-main event, UFC Women’s Flyweight Champion Valentina Shevchenko looks to continue her reign of dominance as she welcomes her next challenger, Taila Santos. Shevchenko hasn’t fought since September, when she won seventh title fight over Lauren Murphy. Santos has put together an impressive four-fight win streak, which includes a win over Joanne Wood in her last fight in November.

Also on the main card is a rematch of the 2020 Fight Of The Year as Zhang Weili and Joanna Jedrzejczyk square off in a strawweight fight. Joining them on the main card is a pair of welterweight bouts, one pitting Andre Fialho against Jake Matthews, and the other between Jack Della Maddalena and Ramazan Emeev.

Follow along with our live coverage of the event beginning at 7 p.m. Eastern time with preliminary action all the way through the main card.

Glover Teixeira second-oldest UFC champion ever after UFC 267 win

Image: Chris Unger/Zuffa LLC

More than eight years after he first challenged for the UFC light heavyweight title, Glover Teixeira broke through at Saturday’s UFC 267, submitting Jan Blachowicz to win the title.

The win for the 42-year-old makes him the second-oldest UFC champion of all time behind Randy Couture who was 43 years, eight months when he defeated Tim Sylvia for the heavyweight title in 2007. Teixeira (33-7) challenged then-champion Jon Jones in April 2014 and lost via unanimous decision.

The Danbury, Connecticut, native by way of Brazil dominated the first round, getting Blachowicz to the ground and making the him pay with timely strikes as Blachowicz kept him in his full guard.

Blachowicz (33-7) opened up in the second round as both men exchanges punches on the feet. But a left hook by Teixeira hurt Blachowicz and as the two grappled next to the cage, Teixeira got the champion down and took his back, quickly submitting him with a rear naked choke-esque submission that saw more pressure applied to his jaw than under his chin.

The win is the sixth straight for Teixeira dating back to January 2019 with him getting a finish in five of them. The win snaps a five-fight winning streak for Blachowicz who was looking for the second defense of his title. He won the then-vacant title in September 2020 by defeating Dominick Reyes by second round TKO.

The Abu Dhabi card that aired on ESPN+ in the U.S. also saw a new interim men’s bantamweight champion crowned as Petr Yan defeated Cory Sandhagen by unanimous decision in the co-main event.

Yan previously held the undisputed version, but lost it to Aljamain Sterling via DQ following an illegal knee strike in their March fight. Sterling is recovering from neck surgery, hence the interim title.

UFC 267 live results: Blachowicz vs. Teixeira, Yan vs. Sandhagen

Welcome to F4WOnline.com’s live coverage of UFC 267: Blachowicz vs. Teixeira, emanating from the Etihad Arena in Yas Island, Abu Dhabu.

It’s a special non-pay-per-view numbered event for ESPN+ subscribers, with a stacked card as the Octagon heads back to Fight Island in Abu Dhabi, bringing along two title fights and a card full of great match-ups.

In the main event, UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jan Blachowicz defends the title for a second time against challenger Glover Teixeira. Blachowicz’ last trip to Fight Island brought along the biggest moment of his career, as he finished Dominick Reyes to win the championship. He made a successful defense against Israel Adesanya in March. Teixeira gets a second chance to win the title as his career resurgence has seen him win five straight bouts coming into this one.

In the co-main event, an Interim UFC Bantamweight Championship is up for grabs as former UFC Bantamweight Champion Petr Yan takes on Cory Sandhagen. Yan was supposed to have a rematch with current champion Aljamain Sterling, but Sterling wasn’t cleared to compete due to neck issues. In steps Sandhagen on short notice, and the two will fight for the interim title and the next shot at Sterling.

The rest of the main card is full of intriguing fights as Islam Makhachev battles Dan Hooker in a lightweight bout, heavyweights Alexander Volkov and Marcin Tybura square off, Li Jingliang welcomes much-hyped Khamzat Chimaev back to action in a middleweight bout, and light heavyweight sluggers Magomed Ankalaev and Volkan Oezdemir kick off the main card.

UFC begins post-UFC 200 plans with some interesting July fights

Photos: Blackzilians.com

The UFC is working on a number of fights for July involving big names including Anthony “Rumble” Johnson, as well as former champions TJ Dillashaw and Holly Holm.

As reported on UFC Tonight and MMA Fighting Wednesday night, a number of fights are in the planning stages:

  • Former bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw vs. Raphael Assuncao, a rematch of their 2013 fight that Assuncao won via close decision, is being targeted as the “main event” for the Fox Sports One portion of UFC 200. They are also planning on adding one more big-name fight to that card which will round out the five-fight PPV show.
  • Rumble Johnson vs. Glover Teixeira is being worked on for the company’s July 23rd show in Chicago, a big FOX show. After Teixeira’s recent quick win over Rashad Evans, he called out Johnson who was game for the fight. The winner would determine the No. 1 contender for the winner of the light heavyweight title unification bout between Jon Jones vs. Daniel Cormier at UFC 200. That fight could be part of the first Madison Square Garden show this fall.
  • Also in the works for that FOX Chicago show and a possible main event is former bantamweight champion Holly Holm vs. Valentina Shevchenko. Shevchenko had a 58-2-1 record as a kickboxer before going into MMA, where she is now 12-2. However, she did lose her last UFC fight to Amanda Nunes.
  • As if that wasn’t enough for the FOX Chicago show, Globo reported Wednesday that former Strikeforce lightweight champion Gil Melendez will return after a year off due to testing positive for PEDs to face Edson Barboza, he of the recent big win over Anthony Pettis.
  • The company also announced that UFC 201 would take place on July 30th in Atlanta, GA, with an anticipated main event of welterweight champion Robbie Lawler vs. Tyron Woodley.

We’ll talk more about these fights and the rest of the news in wrestling and MMA on Wednesday’s Wrestling Observer Radio.
