Chavo Guerrero confirms re-signing with WWE, comments on role with AAA

Chavo Guerrero Jr. confirmed he has re-signed with WWE during a recent interview.

Chavo was reportedly spotted backstage at the June 7 AAA Worlds Collide show in Inglewood, California. Fightful later reported that Chavo was telling people at the event he is back with the company. Chavo told Bill Apter in a recent interview that his new role in WWE is to help with AAA.

“I just re-signed with WWE. I’m putting together, helping out with their AAA show,” he said.

Chavo continued to say about AAA:

“AAA is awesome, was always awesome. Lucha Libre, that’s where my family originated from. So I have a big love of Lucha Libre and just to see AAA under that WWE umbrella is pretty awesome.”

Chavo was also asked about AAA Mega Champion Dominik Mysterio and the Guerrero-style tactics he has been using in his matches as of late.

“He always wanted to be a Guerrero,” Chavo responded. “His dad’s Rey Mysterio, one of the best of all time, but he wanted to be like the Guerreros. So it’s pretty cool to see him actually trying to follow in those steps and kind of just using some lie, cheat, steal Guerrero-isms, it’s pretty cool to see.

In storyline, Eddie Guerrero was revealed as Dominik’s biological father as part of a 2005 SmackDown storyline, something Dominik referenced during his promo segment with Rey two weeks ago. Dominik told Rey to “keep his father’s name” out of his mouth after Rey had mentioned Eddie.

Guerrero’s full interview with Bill Apter is available below:

Jordynne Grace launches CTE fundraiser following controversial Benoit tweet

Impact Wrestling Knockouts Champion Jordynne Grace is doing her best to make something positive come from a negative situation.

After drawing criticism for a tweet she made about Chris Benoit last week, Grace issued a statement on Monday announcing that she’s launching a fundraiser to benefit the Concussion Legacy Foundation. The fundraiser “will serve to push forward the research and education of CTE.”

The fundraiser has a goal of $20,000, with Grace donating $5,000 of her own money to begin the campaign. Grace launched the fundraiser after speaking privately to friends and family of Benoit’s that she angered or hurt, including Benoit’s son David and Benoit’s friends Chris Jericho and Chavo Guerrero.

Grace wrote:

Last week I made an irresponsible and unnecessary tweet. Regardless of how my personal emotions influence my opinion, I should have recognized the impact my words would have on friends and family close to the situation. I was completely thoughtless in that regard.

Since reflecting this past week, I’ve reached out privately to friends and family that I angered or hurt.

Among those was David Benoit, Chavo Guererro, and Chris Jericho, who are supporting me in the decision to partner and fundraise with the Concussion Legacy Foundation (formerly Sports Legacy Institute). I have pledged $5,000, with the overall campaign goal being $20,000.

I’m acutely aware that the damage has been done. I would never intentionally add onto the suffering of those already dealing with such a traumatic event, and I am sorry for my insensitivity and aggravating this already delicate topic.

This is my way of attempting to squeeze something positive out of the negative situation I created. Thank you in advance to everyone who donates.

In response to a tweet about wrestlers who still praise Benoit in a professional context despite his heinous actions, Grace wrote on July 6: “This is gonna be the coldest take I ever tweet on this app. I already know y’all gonna be mad. I don’t think Benoit could 100% hang with most of the present day best wrestlers. He would not be able to remember matches. Also may he burn in hell, amen.”

Guerrero then responded to Grace: “I think @JordynneGrace just lost a lot of wrestling credibility from some of her comments.”

Last month marked 15 years since the Benoit double murder and suicide, where Benoit murdered his wife Nancy and seven-year-old son Daniel before killing himself.

Chavo Guerrero to manage Bandido at ROH Supercard of Honor

Chavo Guerrero will be in Bandido’s corner at ROH Supercard of Honor.

Ring of Honor owner Tony Khan made the announcement Thursday night on Twitter, posting a video promo that Guerrero cut stating that he would be managing Bandido at Friday’s event.

Guerrero said that you can’t have wrestling history without a Guerrero, that he will make his presence known, that he demands respect, and that he will have that respect on Friday.

Guerrero had a brief stint in Khan’s AEW promotion, debuting in July 2021 as a manager for Andrade El Idolo. Guerrero was written out of storylines in September 2021 when he took a job in Australia as a wrestling consultant on Season 2 of NBC’s Young Rock show.

Guerrero said that he took the opportunity on Young Rock with Khan’s blessing, and was assured that his AEW job would be there for him when he returned. Guerrero was removed from the AEW roster page sometime in 2022.

Guerrero stated that after returning to the United States in February, Khan had not been answering his calls or text messages. Khan addressed the situation at the post-Revolution press conference, stating that while Guerrero had not been under contract but only on a pay-per-appearance deal, he owed Chavo a phone call.

The issue appears to have been smoothed over, as Guerrero will be working for Khan on Friday.

Supercard of Honor airs on FITE TV Friday, April 1 at 8 p.m. Eastern time. A one-hour pre-show will air for free on YouTube beginning at 7 p.m. Eastern.

Here’s the Supercard of Honor lineup:

  • Winner-take-all match to determine undisputed ROH World Champion: Jonathan Gresham vs. Bandido (w/Chavo Guerrero)
  • ROH Tag Team Champions The Briscoes defend against FTR
  • Interim ROH Women’s World Championship match: Mercedes Martinez vs. Willow Nightingale
  • ROH TV Champion Rhett Titus defends against Minoru Suzuki
  • ROH Pure Champion Josh Woods defends against Wheeler Yuta
  • Jay Lethal vs. Lee Moriarty
  • Swerve The Realest (Shane Strickland) vs. Alex Zayne
  • Ninja Mack vs. Tully Blanchard’s new client

Chavo Guerrero Jr. expected to return to AEW

Image: AEW

Even though Chavo Guerrero Jr. was written off in storyline, Dave Meltzer reported in this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter that Guerrero is expected to return to AEW in the future.

Two weeks ago on Rampage, Andrade El Idolo picked up a win over PAC thanks to help from Guerrero while the referee’s back was turned. However, El Idolo didn’t want the help and laid out Guerrero after the match. Guerrero was then given a double superkick from Penta El Zero Miedo and Rey Fenix before PAC finished him off with the brutalizer.

Meltzer said the reason for the angle was Guerrero is the wrestling coordinator for the NBC show Young Rock, based on Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s life. They are filming the second season now so Guerrero needed to be written off which was the plan from the onset. Meltzer said Guerrero is expected to return when filming is done.

The 50-year-old made his AEW debut in July as the executive consultant for El Idolo, taking over for Vickie Guerrero.

Chavo Guerrero makes AEW debut as Andrade El Idolo’s consultant

Chavo Guerrero made his AEW debut as Andrade El Idolo’s executive consultant on tonight’s Fyter Fest episode of Dynamite.

During an in-ring interview with Tony Schiavone, Andrade stated that he had a surprise for the crowd tonight. Schiavone then introduced Guerrero.

Guerrero said that he heard AEW is the place to be and that he was blown away by all the talent he saw backstage. Guerrero then said with all due respect to the talented men and women in AEW, none are as talented as Andrade.

The Death Triangle trio of PAC, Penta El Zero Miedo and Rey Fenix came to the stage with Alex Abrahantes. Guerrero, Andrade, PAC and Abrahantes had a verbal exchange where Andrade said that Penta and Fenix should come work for him rather than working for PAC, a request that Death Triangle rejected. The segment ended with Death Triangle hitting the ring and a pull-apart by referees.

Guerrero, 50, is a veteran with international experience. He has wrestled for WCW, NJPW, TNA, Lucha Underground, AAA and a variety of independent promotions over a career spanning more than two decades. He had a lengthy run with WWE beginning in 2001 after his contract was purchased in the sale of WCW to WWE. He was granted his WWE release in June 2011.

Guerrero has wrestled sporadically in 2020 and 2021, with his only high-profile matches being on two Good Brothers’ Talk ‘N Shop A Mania PPV events in 2020 and a Josh Barnett’s Bloodsport PPV in April 2021.

Lucha Underground results: King Cuerno vs. Chavo Guerrero Jr.

The Takeaway —

Antonio Cueto is looking to make sacrifices to the gods. Mr. Pectacular was the first of what looks to be many deaths at the hands of Matanza this season, as Matanza destroyed him in a few seconds in the first-ever Sacrifice to the Gods match.

Jake Strong continues to dominate, breaking ankles and causing severe injuries. The feud between the Worldwide Underground and Kobra Moon’s men continued to build. I wonder if one of these groups will be getting a shot at the Six-Man Tag titles before the end of the season.

Antonio is looking for the Power Gauntlet, but Cuerno insisted it was stolen. Brian Cage wanted a title shot against Pentagon Dark, but Antonio booked him against Mil Muertes instead. Cuerno got a measure of revenge against Chavo Guerrero Jr. and won an Aztec Medallion in the process. Meanwhile, one has to wonder what the newly-revived Catrina will be bringing to the table.

The Recap —

Fenix was killed last week by Mil Muertes, and Catrina was able to give him the kiss of death this week. She sucked 1,000 souls out from him, returning her to the land of the living. Catrina went to Melissa Santos and told her that Fenix gave his life for the only woman who truly loved him — Catrina.

She then gave Santos her half of an Aztec Medallion. This is going to be important later, I think.

Jake Strong defeated Big Bad Steve via ankle lock

Strong started the match fast by beating on Steve around ringside. It wasn’t long after that Strong locked on an ankle lock and Steve tapped out. Strong then broke Steve’s ankle. Matt Striker commented that Famous B, who suffered a broken ankle due to Strong, might have to have a limb amputated. Well then. Strong gave Steve a brutal powerbomb on the floor.

Antonio Cueto had King Cuerno in his office, and Antonio was looking for the gauntlet. Cuerno insisted that someone stole it from him. Antonio offered him an Aztec Medallion from his tribe, and a chance to get revenge on Chavo Guerrero Jr.

Brian Cage walked in and wanted a shot at Pentagon Dark. Cuerno said that he was the man, but Cage is a machine. Antonio told Cage that if he wanted a shot at the title, he’d have to win a medallion and compete for the Gift of the Gods. Cage was booked against Mil Muertes.

Worldwide Underground (Taya & Johnny Mundo) defeated Daga & Kobra Moon via Curb Stomp after Interference by PJ Black

Taya and Daga started the match and there was a quick exchange of holds before Daga tried a pinfall attempt. Taya hit a big boot that nailed Daga and followed with a kick to the stomach. Daga hit a big dropkick that led to Taya tagging out. Mundo tried to slide between Daga’s legs, but Daga did a double stomp to his back. Mundo turned it around and hit a standing Shooting Star Press.

Kobra Moon hit a flying hurricanrana on Mundo, but he kicked out. Mundo went for a superkick and accidently hit Taya, and Matt Striker said they may be romantically involved with each other. I’m quite sure that’s common knowledge, Matt. Kobra Moon hit a Russian leg sweep on Taya, but while the referee was distracted, PJ Black hit Moon, and Taya hit a Curb Stomp before the pinfall.

Vibora ran out and took out all three members of the Worldwide Underground. Kobra Moon said that Mundo would soon call her his queen.

Antonio unlocked Matanza’s room, where we saw him beating a man without mercy. Antonio said that it was time for Matanza’s first sacrifice.

Mr. Pectacular was in the ring, and Antonio came out and said this would likely be his last match, as he booked the first-ever Sacrifice to the Gods match — and Mr. Pectacular was the sacrifice. Striker accidentally called Antonio “Dario” here, and I wonder if Antonio will have Striker eaten by Matanza next.

Matanza Cueto defeated Mr. Pectacular via Death

Matanza killed him within a few seconds with a Wrath of the Gods. Soon thereafter, Matanza looked to the skies and Mr. Pectacular disappeared, apparently appeasing the gods.

King Cuerno defeated Chavo Guerrero Jr. for an Aztec Medallion via Thrill of the Kill

Guerrero hit a dive right away and sent Cuerno crashing into a few rows of chairs. He took it to Cuerno early on, beating him all around ringside. Cuerno hit a dropkick after an attempted top rope dive by Guerrero. Cuerno struck Guerrero with a chop. Both men brawled, and Guerrero went for a chair shot as Cuerno went for a dive, but Cuerno saw it coming and slid under the bottom rope before kicking the chair into Guerrero’s face.

Cuerno hit a plancha off a railing with assistance from a member of the audience. Striker said that Cuerno must have watched a ton of footage of Guerrero to prepare for the match. However, Antonio booked it earlier in the night. Striker was pretty bad tonight. Guerrero hit a superplex, but Cuerno kicked out.

Both men brawled before Guerrero went for a slingshot, but Cuerno countered, hit a sunset flip, and followed up with a knee. Cuerno hit a suicide dive to the outside, but it didn’t do too much good as Guerrero cradled him when they went back in the ring. Cuerno countered the Three Amigos and hit a Thrill of the Kill for the pinfall finish. Solid match to close the show.

February 20, 2017 Wrestling Observer Newsletter: WWE financials, death of Chavo Guerrero, more

More than ever before, the pro wrestling business has become about getting the most money out of a smaller fan base.

There are fewer people watching the product than at any point in at least 22 years, perhaps longer. But there are more hardcore fans, willing to spend far more money than ever before.

It’s both good and bad. The nature of the business is that this will stay this way. It’s become too difficult and time consuming to the old casual fan, who would watch an hour of television every now and then, perhaps attend one or two big blow-off shows per year, to keep up, and perhaps too silly or unimportant to them as well. But for the people who love wrestling, the amount of product is endless, and it’s going to stay that way.

“It’s about super serving our most passionate fans, and one of the things we have learned is they will consume just about everything we throw at them,” said Chief Strategy and Financial Officer George Barrios.

Chavo Guerrero Sr. passes away at 68 years old

Salvador “Chavo” Guerrero III, also known as Chavo Sr. and Chavo Classic, passed away today after an illness at the age of 68.

Guerrero was believed to have been suffering from liver cancer and had entered hospice care more than a week ago.

Chavo Guerrero was the son of Mexican wrestling legend Gori Guerrero, and nephew of Enrique Llanes, another 1950s legend. He started his career in 1970 as Gori Guerrero Jr., working for his father in El Paso and Ciudad Juarez. He also worked as a wrestling coach. His first full-time territory was Florida in 1974, and although talented, was buried under the incredible talent in the promotion.

He came to California in 1975 as an unknown, but was pushed quickly as a top babyface and immediately became one of the biggest stars in wrestling due to hie exposure on the Spanish International Network (now Univision). Soon, brothers Mando and Hector and father Gori were working regularly in the promotion and were the dominant bnbyfaces. Youngest brother Eddy started wrestling in the late 80s. No matter how much Eddy was praised, he would always insist that Chavo was the best wrestler in the family.

In the mid-to-late 1970s, Chavo Guerrero was best known for a lengthy feud with Roddy Piper that put both men on the map as major wrestling stars. He was also the booker at times, and the Guerreros were the stars of the promotion,

He held the Americas title roughly 15 times and in his prime was one of the best in-ring performers in the world. While he remained a star wrestler, particularly in Japan for his matches with the likes of Tatsumi Fujinami and Atsushi Onita, he never achieved the stardom after leaving Los Angeles. At the 1980 Shea Stadium show headlined by Bruno Sammartino vs. Larry Zbyszko, a match with Fujinami vs. Guerrero was the best match on the card.

A former college wrestler at the University of Texas at El Paso, he was small and acrobatic based on his time period, and developed the moonsault block as one of his trademark moves, perhaps the first wrestler who worked on top in the U.S. to use it.

He had a run as Chavo Classic in the WWE in 2004, which ended due to him having several issues.

Guerrero was on the Hall of Fame ballot for several years before dropping off. The musical group The Mountain Goats, who grew up as wrestling fans, idolized him and he was the subject of the 2015 song “The Legend of Chavo Guerrero.”

He was wrestling as late as the end of November in Japan, including appearing on the November 27th All Japan show at Sumo Hall in Tokyo.

Only a few people were aware of his illness and he did not want sympathy from anyone at the end and asked that it be kept quiet.

Lucha Underground results: Rey Mysterio vs. Chavo Guerrero

This week’s show begins with a recap of the cop drama so far before an El Rey ad interrupts everything and then splits the picture while muting the audio. Well, that was weird. At least it quieted Matt Striker for a bit. Speaking of which, Dario Cueto tells Striker to shut up so he can talk about the Dial of Doom.

Dario talks about how there’s one guy who always comes in after breaking his arm and just wants his shot — so it’s Cortez Castro’s time to shine! Castro comes out with his right arm in a cast.

Lucha Underground Champion Matanza Cueto defeated Cortez Castro to retain his title

Striker references Mike Sharpe and Bob Orton Jr. with the cast. Castro’s arm gets stomped and he breaks it again, getting a “holy sh*t” chant right away. The cast is shattered, and he charges at Matanza with it, but eats a dropkick to the knees.

Matanza eats some casts shots, but lands a flying European uppercut and wins with the Wrath of the Gods. Dario cuts a pissed off promo on Castro. “Get plenty of sleep under covers, rat!” The slow build towards his demise is great so far.

Dario and Joey Ryan, dressed like Sonny Crockett, celebrate in Dario’s office. The picture gets split in half again, but the top half is an El Rey ad and it blocks out most of the picture for the show. Son of Havoc wants to fight for Mascarita Sagrada, and Dario gives him a match with Dr. Wagner Jr. where the winner gets to pick the stipulation in the Famous B vs. Sagrada match.

Prince Puma says that Mil Muertes put Konnan in a casket, so he’ll challenge him to Grave Consequences. Catrina accepts and then Muertes beats up Puma while wearing a slick black suit. Muertes goes for the flatliner, but gets hit and Puma sends him packing with a series of kicks.

Famous B sends Melissa Santos out of the ring so he can do Dr. Wagner Jr.’s intro. Wagner poses while Famous B puts him over. Havoc and Sagrada come down for their match.

Son of Havoc defeated Dr. Wagner Jr.

Havoc dives onto Wagner on the floor twice to start things off hot. Havoc posts him and hits a moonsault while Vampiro says he’s 300 pounds now and breaking chairs by jumping on them with excitement. Wagner hits a flying lariat and gets two. An RKO off the second rope then gets a nearfall for Wagner.

Vampiro talks about how Havoc looks like he plays Dungeons & Dragons and buries Striker’s D&D knowledge. Brenda starts a “Doc-tor Wag-ner!” chant. Vampiro talks about how Sagrada and Wagner are the only ones holding onto tradition by having a full face mask instead of a more open mask.

Havoc prevents a superplex and hits the SSP to win. Sagrada will face Famous B in a believer’s backlash match — so fans get to bring weapons and hit Famous B a ton.

The White Rabbit Clan video airs amid a split screen. We finally see Paul London and two unannounced allies.

Puma vs. Muertes in Grave Consequences is next week. Santos introduces the main event. Chavo is out first and he fist bumps his dad. Vampiro says that Chavo was in the opener in 1993 when he was in the main event and now it could be the end of him. Striker says this could be the end of Mysterio’s career as well.

Rey Mysterio Jr. defeated Chavo Guerrero in a loser leaves lucha match

Chavo takes Mysterio down but he bridges up to get a cradle for two. Chavo is sent to the apron and gets dropkicked down. Chavo gets taken out and sent into his dad at ringside. A moonsault from Mysterio gets two.

Mysterio lands a baseball slide dropkick to Chavo in the corner. He goes for a running rana, but Chavo alley-oops him. Vampiro talks about Chavo Sr. training him and showing him the ropes for five years. He remembers Mysterio and Chavo debuting, and he just can’t go into it because it’s too much for him.

Chavo uppercuts Mysterio and kicks his leg out from him and posts his knee. Chavo goes for a reverse superplex but gets beaten down. Mysterio gets two off a springboard crossbody and gets another nearfall off of a seated senton.

Chavo goes for three amigos but Mysterio fights out. Chavo Sr. comes in and hits his son with a chair to give Chavo the DQ win. I think this is the first DQ finish in LU history. Dario yells at the ref for calling for a DQ — has he forgotten how much Dario loves violence?!

Dario says it’s not over and it’s now an anything goes match. Dario has to win best non-wrestling performer of the year. Mysterio hits a 619 on Chavo Sr. and he goes for a rana on Chavo, but Chavo gets a half crab. Mysterio gets the ropes before Chavo pulls him back. Chavo hits the Gory bomb, but it only gets two. Chavo turns a super sunset flip into a basement dropkick.

Mysterio hits a 619 and a splash to send Chavo out of Lucha Underground. Mysterio holds the ropes open for Chavo, but they opt to meet mid-ring as the show ends.

This was a good way for Chavo’s run to end — at least for now. He seems to have a nice future in wrestling-themed work doing training, which fits in nicely with Hector doing stunt work in Hollywood for many years.
