How Gunther vs. Seth Rollins WrestleMania 42 match came together

The current health status of Bron Breakker didn’t have a direct role in the making of Gunther vs. Seth Rollins for next month’s WWE WrestleMania 42, according to our Dave Meltzer.

The match between the former WWE World Heavyweight Champions came together on Monday’s Raw after Rollins took out Paul Heyman with a chair. The angle was discussed on Wrestling Observer Radio with Meltzer and Bryan Alvarez speculating the bout was made due to Breakker not being cleared.

On X Tuesday, Meltzer wrote the Gunther vs. Rollins match wasn’t made because Breakker wasn’t cleared in time and “that was the updated plan regardless.”

He later added, “There were multiple other ideas since that specific injury.”

Breakker and the also injured Bronson Reed took Rollins out in storyline last October to cover for Rollins’ shoulder surgery. Rollins made his return in February but without Breakker or even Reed to get revenge on.

The news comes after reports earlier this month that there was optimism for Breakker’s return before WrestleMania 42 as he recovers from hernia surgery.

Gunther was reportedly set to take on Rey Mysterio at WrestleMania before Mysterio got injured.

Tony D’Angelo reveals WWE NXT’s original scrapped plan for Bron Breakker

In a new interview, Tony D’Angelo shared what WWE NXT had originally planned for he and Bron Breakker together.

Speaking on the No Contest Wrestling podcast, D’Angelo said in their early days in NXT, WWE had originally planned to have D’Angelo and Breakker together as a tag team.

“When we first got in, me and Bron were in a tag together. So, we were doing that for a minute. Not on TV, but they were priming us, ‘This is what you’re gonna do,’ kinda like the new age Steiner Brothers type of deal. I was (wearing a singlet), but I was wearing a singlet before that anyway, so that wasn’t foreign.

“I just remember one day, Road Dogg came up and he was like, ‘Hey man, we’re not doing this,’ and this is right when 2.0 first kicked off. They kind of just…‘Clean slate, everybody, We kind of have a lane for you,’ and I had to figure out quick what I was gonna do,” D’Angelo continued.

“So in one of the in-house matches, I just turned it on and they were like, ‘Whoa, where did that come from?’ And then they were like, ‘Yep, we’re running with this, this is it.’”

Following the original scrapped plans, Breakker was presented as a singles star and soon pushed to the top of the branding, going on to become a two-time NXT Champion.

While Breakker and D’Angelo never tagged together, they both won the NXT Tag Team Championship with different partners: Breakker with Baron Corbin, and D’Angelo with Channing ‘Stacks’ Lorenzo.

Interestingly, Breakker and Corbin defeated D’Angelo and Lorenzo to win the NXT Tag titles in February 2024.

Breakker is currently a part of Paul Heyman’s Vision stable and is recovering from a hernia injury. Although out of action, he is rumored to return by WrestleMania 42.

Report: Injured WWE wrestler heading to Performance Center this week

After months of injury and a hiatus, Bron Breakker is reportedly on his way to the WWE Performance Center.

Last week, reports emerged that WWE was getting optimistic about Breakker’s in-ring return and potential feud with Seth Rollins at WrestleMania 42. Breakker and Rollins have been rumored to fight at WrestleMania, following their rivalry, which began last year, after Breakker and Bronson Reed turned their back on Rollins.

Mike Johnson of PWInsider recently reported on Sunday that Breakker is expected to report to the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, Florida, this week as part of his medical clearance process.

Breakker suffered a hernia when he flipped off the heavy commentator’s table on an episode of WWE RAW. Breakker has reportedly been rehabbing like crazy ever since he underwent surgery for the hernia.

Breakker’s return news appears promising, since Rollins came back earlier this year and took down the remaining members of The Vision.

Update on planned WWE WrestleMania 42 matches | Exclusive

Dave Meltzer has an update on the currently planned WWE WrestleMania 42 card.

In today’s edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Meltzer wrote that in addition to the announced matches, Drew McIntyre vs. Jacob Fatu and AJ Lee vs. Becky Lynch are expected to be added.

Meltzer wrote:

“Matches that have been confirmed to us on the show or announced are the two main events, Stephanie Vaquer vs. Liv Morgan and Jade Cargill vs. Rhea Ripley for the two different women’s titles, AJ Lee vs. Becky Lynch for the IC title, Lesnar vs. Femi, and Drew McIntyre vs. Jacob Fatu. McIntyre vs. Fatu is scheduled for the 3/20 Smackdown show but it was described as something designed to heighten interest in their Mania match.”

Meltzer also speculated that Seth Rollins will either wrestle Logan Paul or Bron Breakker on the show, depending on if Breakker is healed from hernia surgery in time.

“In looking at other things, Seth Rollins vs. either Logan Paul or Bron Breakker seems like a likely direction. It has not been confirmed to us on whether Breakker will be ready after hernia surgery and we were [told] the Paul & Austin Theory vs. Usos direction does not necessarily mean Paul won’t be in that match and is unrelated.”

Theory & Paul vs. The Usos is scheduled for Monday’s edition of WWE Raw.

Earlier this month, there were reports that WWE is planning at least six women’s matches for the WrestleMania card this year. Meltzer added that a multi-team match for the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships could be added to the lineup.

Meltzer added:

“It certainly appears there will be a multiple team women’s tag title match with Nia Jax & Lash Legend, Charlotte Flair & Alexa Bliss, Bayley & Lyra Valkyria, Asuka & Kairi Sane and the Bella Twins all seeming to be in that mix. I could also see something similar for the Smackdown tag titles.”

Earlier this week, it was reported that Gunther vs. Rey Mysterio had been the plan for Mania before Mysterio suffered a rib injury.

“Gunther doesn’t seem to have any kind of a program. Some think Rey Mysterio, who has also been injured. A Grande Americano vs. Grande Americano mask vs. mask match would seem to be a direction, whether at this event or later,” Meltzer continued.

“Carmelo Hayes seems to be in the direction of Ilja Dragunov for the U.S. title, Trick Williams with Sami Zayn as well as Giulia vs. Tiffany Stratton for the US title.”

Meltzer further speculated about Jelly Roll’s possible involvement for WrestleMania 42 following his SmackDown appearance last week as a guest on The Miz TV.

“There seems the possibility of something involving Jelly Roll. But that looks to be most of the show right there given there are expected to be 14 to 16 total matches over the two nights.”

WWE WrestleMania 42 announced lineup:

  • Roman Reigns vs. CM Punk for the World Heavyweight Championship
  • Randy Orton vs. Cody Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Championship
  • Stephanie Vaquer vs. Liv Morgan for the Women’s World Championship
  • Jade Cargill vs. Rhea Ripley for the WWE Women’s Championship
  • Oba Femi vs. Brock Lesnar

Oba Femi isn’t the only good option for a Brock Lesnar WrestleMania 42 opponent | Opinion

Last month, Brock Lesnar issued an open challenge for WWE WrestleMania 42 with rumors running rampant afterward that Oba Femi will be the man to step up.

On tonight’s WWE Raw, it’s possible that we will finally learn who will answer the challenge as Lesnar is scheduled to appear.

Femi exploded onto the main roster scene at the Royal Rumble, not only marking his debut at the event but also entering at number one. He eliminated five men before his run came to an end at the hands of Lesnar who eliminated him.

But what if Femi isn’t the pick if WWE doesn’t want to defeat either he or Lesnar right now?

Given that, here’s a few other names to consider, some longer shots than others.

Gunther

As of late, the former WWE World Heavyweight Champion has built his reputation and in-ring performance on being the “career killer.” After adding Goldberg, John Cena and AJ Styles to that list, it would be natural for him to target Lesnar next — another bold statement feat on his wrestling resume and one that would continue to solidify him as a ruthless heel in 2026.

They have never battled each other in singles competition despite it being teased nearly three years ago. Coincidentally, it was at the 2023 Royal Rumble where the two briefly collided in an intense exchange. Both Gunther and Lesnar have openly expressed interest in the blockbuster clash which has yet to come to fruition, but could at WrestleMania or perhaps SummerSlam if Lesnar does indeed retire in his native state of Minnesota.

Royce Keys

Keys was a dominant force in AEW for nearly six years as Powerhouse Hobbs before moving to WWE. He also made his WWE debut at the Royal Rumble this year. However, he has not made any appearances since then and has yet to make an impact. If Lesnar walks into WrestleMania 42 without knowing his opponent is, Keys could be an interesting one to answer the challenge.

Such a high-profile match could help sustain Keys’ momentum and establish him among the fanbase. Despite a potential loss in this once in a lifetime match against Lesnar, it could possibly be remembered as a career-defining moment and reveal his potential as a top star going forward.

Talla Tonga

The nearly seven foot giant has proven to be a formidable weapon for The MFTs on SmackDown. Towering over the other WWE stars, Tonga uses his size and agility with brutal strikes in the ring.

A potential match between he and Lesnar at WrestleMania 42 would be the ultimate battle of strength and supremacy. Both men possess overwhelming athleticism and power aligning with their physique which could set the stage for a first time ever encounter.

Tonga made his WWE debut at Night of Champions later year to assist Solo Sikoa in his United States Title match against Jacob Fatu. It not only established Tonga’s powerful presence but also an immense challenge for future heavyweights and anyone who dared oppose The MFTs.

Omos

While it would not be a full-fledged match, WWE could use the opportunity and capitalize on Omos’ return for WrestleMania.

Omos and Lesnar already share a history with their WrestleMania 39 showdown. The wrestling giant’s last televised match in WWE was in 2024 but since then, he has been somewhat active in dark matches in NXT and appearances in both Pro Wrestling NOAH and AAA.

His potential return at WrestleMania 42 to challenge a former rival could bode well in his re-establishment as a dominant force on the roster, even if it lasts for a few minutes.

Bron Breakker

Breakker’s meteoric rise to stardom on the main roster within a couple of years in addition to being dubbed ‘the next big thing’ would have made him the perfect rival for Lesnar. However, the uncertainty surrounding his hernia surgery recovery puts him at a disadvantage for being out of in-ring action for most of the first half of 2026.

In spite of reports on Lesnar’s WWE retirement some time this year, a bout between the two at some point is a must. It’s unlikely for WrestleMania, but would be a surprise if it happened.

Final Thoughts

Gunther would be an ideal fit to face Lesnar at WrestleMania 42. If he destroys Lesnar at WrestleMania, he could be further positioned as the prime heel in 2026, possibly joining the ranks of Roman Reigns as one of the defining villains of the decade.

As of this writing, Gunther has no feuds on his radar. And to avoid a failed boost that built momentum over the past few years, the opportunity should be seized by WWE to check off a blockbuster feud against Lesnar. Regardless of whoever would walk away with the win, the bout would leave a lasting impact and could leach to a rematch.

While Femi’s rising popularity is not to be forgotten, a push too soon for a WrestleMania clash combined with a premature loss on a stage of such grand magnitude could impact his ever-growing momentum.

Perhaps we’ll see what happens tonight.

Update on Bron Breakker injury, potential WWE return timeline

On Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer provided some more information regarding the injury Bron Breakker is dealing with.

The road to WrestleMania took an unexpected turn with it being revealed over the weekend that Breakker has undergone hernia surgery. It is not yet known if Breakker will be back in time for WrestleMania 42. Meltzer noted that Breakker’s hernia has been an issue for a while, but it did not cause Breakker’s early elimination from the Royal Rumble. The situation only very recently reached a point where Breakker needed to have surgery done.

“That had nothing to do with the Royal Rumble,” Meltzer said. “People are going like, ‘Oh, that’s why they did the thing at the Rumble.’ It’s like, it had nothing to do with the Rumble, even though, yeah, he probably had it long before that. It had nothing to do with any bookings, anything that they were doing. And then it was just like he got checked out and had to have emergency surgery. That’s the basic story on that.”

Breakker entered the 2026 men’s Royal Rumble match at number two but was quickly eliminated as part of an angle where he attacked by a hooded figure. The angle appeared to be setting up a Breakker vs. Seth Rollins match for WrestleMania 42 this April if Rollins is able to return from his own shoulder injury in time.

Meltzer has not heard a timeline for when Breakker will be back, though the surgery that Breakker underwent was a major operation and not a minimally invasive one. Even an optimistic recovery timeline could put Breakker’s WrestleMania status in question.

“He’ll be out for a while. As far as how long, though, nobody’s really given me a timetable,” Meltzer said. “I looked up some stuff. You know, it could be 12 weeks, it could be six months at worst, probably not that long. But, again, I don’t know all the details. People have had the other surgery, and that’s usually about a two-month recovery, but his situation was worse than the regular surgery — Paul Heyman even talked about, this wasn’t the laparoscopy, this was a major operation.”

WWE confirms Bron Breakker injury

WWE has confirmed Bron Breakker’s injury.

At the opening of Monday’s Raw, Michael Cole said that Breakker was injured during training, and while they do not know exactly what his injury is, he would be out of action indefinitely.

Dave Meltzer broke on Sunday that Breakker had recently undergone hernia surgery, something that could have been serious if left untreated. Fightful reported that despite the injury, sources within WWE were optimistic that he would be able to return by WrestleMania.

PWInsider reported that Breakker’s hernia was an ongoing issue, not one that developed recently. It was determined that he would need surgery for the injury following his angle on last week’s Raw that saw him destory the announcer’s table, upset over his elimiantion from the Royal Rumble. The segment ended with general manager Adam Pearce escorting Breakker out of the building.

Breakker entered the Royal Rumble at number two, but was jumped by a hooded figure who gave him a stomp, heavily implying it was Seth Rollins. Breakker made it to the ring but was quickly eliminated.

Update on Bron Breakker following WWE injury

Bron Breakker is sidelined with an injury right now, but it sounds like he could be back in time for WrestleMania 42.

Our Dave Meltzer reported yesterday that Breakker has undergone hernia surgery. Though WrestleMania is only a couple of months away, Fightful reports that sources within WWE are optimistic that Breakker will be able to make it back in time. His plans for the event have not been announced yet.

PWInsider adds that the word going around is that Breakker’s hernia was an ongoing issue, but it was only determined that he would need surgery following his appearance on WWE Raw last week. On that episode, Breakker took part in an angle where he tore apart the announce table due to frustration over how he was eliminated at the Royal Rumble.

Breakker entered the 2026 men’s Royal Rumble match at number two but was quickly taken out in an angle where he was attacked by a mysterious figure. The unidentified hooded person laid out Breakker with a stomp, with WWE teasing that it could be Seth Rollins. Rollins is currently out of action with his own injury but is also hoping to be back in time for Mania.

When Rollins suffered his shoulder injury in October 2025, WWE wrote him off television in a storyline where Breakker betrayed Rollins and kicked him out of The Vision.

WrestleMania 42 is set to be held in Las Vegas on Saturday, April 18 and Sunday, April 19. So far, only CM Punk vs. Roman Reigns for the World Heavyweight Championship has been officially confirmed.

Bron Breakker undergoes hernia surgery

Bron Breakker is out of action.

Dave Meltzer reported in today’s Daily Update that Breakker recently underwent hernia surgery, and his timeframe for a return isn’t currently known.

“Bron Brekker had surgery for a serious hernia. No word on how long he’ll be out,” he wrote.

Breakker was last physical during the men’s Royal Rumble match. He entered at number 2 but before entering the ring was taken out by a masked man, heavily implied to be Seth Rollins. The masked man gave Breakker a stomp before exiting through the crowd. Breakker did make it to the ring, but was eliminated by the number one entrant Oba Femi.

Following his dubious Rumble appearance, an irate Breakker showed up to Monday’s Raw in a rage, upset that he had been embarassed. He destroyed the ringside area and got in the announcer’s faces, forcing general manager Adam Pearce to throw him out of the building.

It was reported this week that Breakker was originally slated to win the Royal Rumble match. However, changes to the WrestleMania card led to Reigns winning instead and choosing CM Punk for his WrestleMania 42 opponent.

Scrapped plans for Bron Breakker to win WWE Royal Rumble detailed

At one time, Bron Breakker was scheduled to win the WWE Royal Rumble.

In the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, available now for subscribers, Dave Meltzer addressed how the injury to Seth Rollins at Crown Jewel caused WWE to change its original WrestleMania plans, which would have seen Seth Rollins vs. Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes vs. CM Punk as the top matches.

After the injury to Rollins, the plan was that Breakker would lose to Punk on the Raw Netflix anniversary show on January 5, win the Royal Rumble, and then defeat Punk for the title at WrestleMania.

Meltzer wrote:

“The injury to Rollins caused changes, as they went with Punk as champion with the idea of a three step program with Bron Breakker getting a title match on the Raw Netflix anniversary show and losing, coming back and winning the Rumble and then facing and beating Punk for the title at Mania.”

However, plans changed when it was decided that Drew McIntyre would defeat Rhodes for the title.

“Enter McIntyre, who pushed the idea that since he had lost multiple times to Rhodes, that it would be better for him to win the title in the already announced Three Stages of Hell match,” Meltzer continued. “Rhodes was on board with that idea.”

Punk vs. Reigns is now confirmed for WrestleMania, with McIntyre vs. Rhodes likely headlining night one, although Meltzer notes that Jacob Fatu could still be added to that match.

“Reigns, Rhodes and Punk are viewed right now as the three biggest stars, so essentially McIntyre was getting Breakker’s spot in the title picture.

When the decision was made, they had to scrap Breakker winning the Rumble and the choices were either Rhodes or Reigns.”

Meltzer also addressed who is currently planned to win the upcoming Men’s Elimination Chamber match in Chicago, along with a timeline for when WWE changed course with its Royal Rumble plans. The full edition of The Wrestling Observer Newsletter is available here.

Bron Breakker to enter at number two in WWE Royal Rumble

Bron Breakker will have to go through the entire field to win the Royal Rumble.

Paul Heyman confronted Raw General Manager Adam Pearce on today’s WWE Royal Rumble pre-show, blaming Pearce for Breakker drawing the number two spot.

“The one thing we did learn is that Bron Breakker is going to enter the Royal Rumble at number two,” Cole said after the confrontation.

Breakker’s spot in the Rumble was possibly spoiled on the live edition of WWE SmackDown on Netflix last night. As Axiom was making his way to the ring a graphic displaying Breakker as entering in at the number one position flashed on the screen. The graphic was quickly taken off the screen after appearing. It did not appear during the 8 p.m. Eastern airing of the show on the USA Network in the United States.

This will be Breakker’s third entry into a Royal Rumble match, having participated in 2024 and 2025.

Possible Royal Rumble spoiler inadvertently airs during WWE SmackDown

An error may have spoiled who the first entrant is in one of tomorrow’s Royal Rumble matches.

On the live edition Friday’s SmackDown in Saudi Arabia that streamed on Netflix internationally, Fraxiom were making their way to the ring when suddenly a graphic was shown at the bottom of the screen indicating Bron Breakker drew number 1 in the men’s Royal Rumble match. The graphic was taken down just as quickly as it was put up.

During the USA Network airing, the error was removed.

A somewhat similar situation took place last year when WWE decided to reshoot an angle between Logan Paul and John Cena that closed out SmackDown, with two different versions of Paul’s sucker punch airing on Netflix and the USA Network respectively.

Breakker was put into the Royal Rumble match on Raw after Adam Pearce chose to lift his indefinite suspension, saying it was himself that got physical first by grabbing Breakker during their altercation. He also put all the members of The Vision into the Royal Rumble match. After Austin Theory beat Rey Mysterio in a match, the rest of the Vision took out Penta and Dragon Lee. Announcers pushed that a phone call Pearce got last week may be leading the group into getting preferential treatment moving forward.
