Show Report —

MJF joined commentary for this match.

Chris Jericho defeated Shawn Spears (w/ Tully Blanchard)

The rule was that Spears, whose nickname is the “Chairman,” can use a chair, but Jericho can’t. This was the first “labor of Jericho.”

Jericho knocked the chair out of Spears’ hands and took him down with a running forearm. Spears got some offense in, but Jericho tossed him over the top and then sent him to the floor, where Jericho whipped him into the barricade. Jericho grabbed the camera from the ringside cameraman and celebrated.

Spears grabbed a chair from under the ring and cut off a Jericho springboard. He targeted Jericho’s injured left arm. Jericho came back with an enziguiri and went to the top rope, but Spears popped up and took Jericho down to the mat. Spears continued to attack Jericho’s arm.

Jericho avoided a corner splash and took down Spears with a shoulder tackle. He landed a double sledge off the top rope. Jericho propped Spears up in the corner and landed ten punches before hitting a top-rope Frankensteiner. He ran into a Spears thrust kick for two.

Spears countered running offense into a spinebuster for two. He went outside for another chair and smacked it over Jericho’s back. He set up to smash it over Jericho’s head, but Jericho took him down and locked on the Walls of Jericho. Spears fought to reach the ropes, but Jericho brought it back into the center of the ring.

Tully distracted the official as Spears frantically tapped. Sammy Guevara ran out and sent Tully packing, but Spears grabbed a chair and whacked Jericho with it. He then hit the C4, but Jericho kicked out — the first time the C4 was kicked out of in AEW. Spears set up to hit a chair-assisted C4, but Jericho escaped and hit the Judas Effect for the win.

– MJF immediately grabbed a mic and said that Jericho’s not allowed to have anyone come out and help him anymore.

Next week, Jericho will have a No Disqualification match against indie stalwart Nick Gage for Labor #2. Gage showed up and got a major reaction.

A brief Miro video played. The most notable part is that he was wearing a Bloodsport jacket.

Doc Gallows (w/ Karl Anderson) defeated Frankie Kazarian

Kazarian went right at Gallows in the corner and followed it up with a missile dropkick. Gallows came back with a big boot as he established the advantage in the match. He whipped Kazarian to the floor, where the latter fell victim to a cheap shot from Anderson leading into the commercial break.

Once back, Kazarian avoided some shots and took Gallows down with a clothesline and a back suplex. A springboard leg drop followed for two. Anderson got involved again but was taken out with a leg bulldog. The distraction was enough for Gallows to hit a right hand and a sit-out tree slam for the win.

– After the match, Anderson attacked and the Good Brothers hit Kazarian with the Magic Killer.

Omega’s music played, and he walked out with Don Callis. He said that attacking Kazarian was a message: “This is what happens when you mess with The Elite.” Omega said that Kazarian had been a thorn in their side for months. “The Elite Hunter has become, uh, the Elite Hunted.”

Hangman Page’s music played and he came out with a beer in hand. Callis pointed out that the Elite have the four-on-one numbers advantage and asked if Page was stupid or drunk. Page struck but was immediately taken out by the Good Brothers. The Dark Order ran out to even the odds. Page hit a Buckshot Lariat on Anderson.

**********

A Team Taz video played where Taz said he was proud of Ricky Starks for winning the FTW Championship. Starks said that they’d have a championship celebration the following week.

Brian Cage was interviewed about it. He said the celebration works out, because he loves celebrations.

**********

Darby Allin (w/ Sting) defeated Wheeler YUTA (w/ Orange Cassidy)

Allin had heavily taped ribs after last week’s Coffin Match with Ethan Page. They performed some chain wrestling to start. NJPW’s Hikuleo, the son of Haku, was shown in the crowd.

YUTA targeted Allin’s midsection, striking it with a thrust kick and dropping him over the ropes. Allin came back briefly, but YUTA pulled him off the ropes and locked on an octopus hold. After Allin escaped, YUTA hit a German suplex bridge for two.

Allin pulled YUTA off the ropes and hit a superplex. Sting and Orange faced off outside the ring and did some Orange schtick. YUTA tried to take advantage with a cradle, but Allin hit a stunner and the Coffin Drop for the quick win.

– The Blade attacked Orange after the match with brass knuckles. They’re supposed to wrestle one on one later tonight.

A video package aired recapping Jon Moxley and Lance Archer’s previous matches. Archer said he’d knock Moxley’s ass out. Moxley said “one way or another, it’s over.”

A video recapped the Baker vs. Rose feud.

AEW Women’s Championship: Dr. Britt Baker, D.M.D. (c) (w/ Rebel) defeated Nyla Rose (w/ Vickie Guerrero)

This was Baker’s first defense of her championship. The crowd adores her but the action and layout here were not good.

She took Rose to the mat early on with a targeted attack on Rose’s left arm. Rose powered out but was rolled up for two. She caught a running attack from Baker and hit a press slam followed by a running senton. Rose perched Baker over the top rope, but Rebel pulled her off as Baker flatlined Rose into the turnbuckle.

Baker dominated throughout the break, meaning Rose essentially worked babyface in this match. Once back, Rose overpowered Baker and hit a backbreaker fallaway slam combination. Baker avoided a corner cannonball and hit a sling blade. She backslid Rose for a near fall, but Rose’s shoulder was up. The crowd thought it was three.

Rebel handed Baker the glove. Rose went for a chokeslam, but Baker rolled out of it for a two-count cradle. Baker tried for the Lockjaw, but Rose powered out and hit a Death Valley driver. She followed it up with her diving draping leg drop for a good near fall. Baker came back with two thrust kicks for two. Rose came back with a chokeslam for two.

Baker kind of hit a crucifix bomb for two. She then sloppily rolled Rose up for two more, following it up with two curb stomps for yet another near fall. Rose leveled Baker with a forearm strike, leading two a double down. Rebel distracted the official and tossed Baker the belt, who summarily did the Eddie Guerrero feint. Rose tossed the belt back to Baker before hitting the Beast Bomb for a close near fall.

Rose went for another Beast Bomb, but Baker countered out and floated over into the Lockjaw, forcing Rose to submit.

Tony Schiavone moderated a press conference between FTR and Santana & Ortiz. Harwood was insistent that they were the same. Ortiz said that FTR’s just a pit stop on the way to tag team gold. Santana produced photos from his childhood and upbringing, talking about his mother. Harwood said the only thing left to do was show up and beat their ass. They will wrestle next week.

Andrade El Idolo / Death Triangle segment

Andrade El Idolo was brought out by Tony Schiavone. He has a surprise for everyone. Schiavone introduced Andrade’s new “executive consultant,” Chavo Guerrero. Chavo said this is the place to be. With all due respect, he doesn’t see anybody with as much talent as Andrade.

Death Triangle’s music hit as all three came out with Alex Abrahantes. PAC said they heard Andrade bring them up last week. The Death Triangle hides from nobody. Andrade thanked them for coming. Loud “Cero miedo!” chants.

Andrade said some words in Spanish. Chavo translated for PAC. The Death Triangle is all talented, and they should be holding championships. If they want to change that, listen to Andrade.

“One question,” from Andrade. “Why do you work for PAC? Why not work for Andrade El Idolo?” PAC said that Penta and Fénix don’t work for him. The Death Triangle are family. Fénix said they were the real faces of Latinos. Penta said something, and Alex translated: “Penta says, ‘Why would we want to join a group with you when you’re not even on our level?'”

Death Triangle rushed the ring. Andrade told them to relax and the referee core came out to separate them.

Earlier tonight, the Hardy Family Office had a fight with the Jurassic Express, and Christian Cage had their back.

They cut to Christian and Jurassic Express backstage. Christian suggested he team with Jurassic Express against Angélico and Private Party next week.

**********

QT Marshall, with Alex Marvez, said next week he’d apologize for dumping a protein shake over Tony Schiavone’s head.

**********

Orange Cassidy vs. The Blade (w/ The Bunny)

Orange surprised Blade after the attack earlier tonight. Blade fled to the floor and caught Orange upon re-entry to the ring. Orange took Blade down and laid in strikes. Blade acted like he was injured in the corner as Bunny checked on him. Blade surprised Orange and took him down, but Orange countered a suplex into a stunner.

They fought on the top rope, where Blade hit an insane gutwrench powerbomb on the top turnbuckle, leading to a break. Once back, a diving crossbody and satellite DDT from Orange got two. Bunny tried to get involved, but Kris Statlander stopped her. Orange went to hit Blade with a tope, but Blade pulled Statlander in the way. Orange then pushed Blade into Bunny.

Back in the ring, Blade caught a satellite DDT and dropped Orange over the top rope. A running lariat and spinning tombstone piledriver followed for two. Blade went for the Doctor Bomb, but Orange fought out and hit the Beach Break for two. Bunny distracted the official and tossed the brass knuckles to Blade, but Orange avoided a strike and hit the Orange Punch for the win.

– After the match, Orange grabbed the brass knuckles and hit another Orange Punch on Blade.

Chris Jericho was asked about next week’s no disqualification match against Nick Gage. Jericho said he’d bring the most violent and demented version of himself next week: the Painmaker. He turned around and revealed the Painmaker face paint.

IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship Texas Deathmatch: Lance Archer defeated Jon Moxley (c)

Awesome hardcore main event with a hometown winner. This was no disqualification Last Man Standing rules.

Moxley went right after Archer before the bell and immediately grabbed a kendo stick. He repeatedly whacked Archer with it, but Archer shrugged off the shots. They traded forearms in the center of the ring before Archer cut Moxley off with a pounce followed by a running cannonball senton to the floor. Moxley sent Archer through a barricade with a running shoulder tackle.

They fought up into the stands and crowd. Moxley leapt off a structure and struck Archer, but Archer shrugged it off and used a planted fan as a weapon on Moxley. Back in the ring, Archer cut off a tope suicida with a forearm before exposing the concrete floor. Moxley fought out of a hold and planted Archer on the floor with a Paradigm Shift.

Archer was busted open. Moxley produced a fork and repeatedly stabbed at Archer’s face. During the break, Moxley set up tables on the outside. Once back, Moxley wrapped a chair around Archer’s leg and landed a diving stomp. Moxley tried to follow it up with a trash can lid shot but Archer punched it into Moxley’s face.

They traded right hands. Moxley bit at Archer’s face, but Archer fired up and went for a ripcord lariat. Moxley hit a release German, but Archer hit a big boot and a ripcord Black Hole slam. Archer set up chairs and went to hit a Blackout through them. Moxley fought out and hit a low blow, but Archer popped up and chokeslammed Moxley through the chairs.

Moxley made it up at an eight count and countered a running attack with a big lariat followed by a Paradigm Shift. Archer popped up at four and flipped off Moxley, but Moxley stabbed at Archer’s head with the fork once again. He produced barbed wire boards and propped them up on the tables outside. Moxley went for the Paradigm Shift through the boards and tables, which is how he originally won the title. Archer fought out using the fork and chokeslammed Moxley through the tables. Moxley couldn’t make it up for the 10 count and Archer won the championship for the second time.

– After the match, Archer and HIkuleo faced off. Hikuleo dwarfed Archer, which was an awesome visual.

AEW Dynamite live results: New Year’s Smash night two

Darby Allin will defend his TNT Championship for the first time tonight on AEW Dynamite New Year’s Smash night two. Allin defends against Team Taz’s Brian Cage.

Allin’s feud with Team Taz stretches back months, as he took on Ricky Starks on Dynamite in September. Since claiming the TNT title from Cody Rhodes at Full Gear on November 7, Allin, Rhodes, and later Sting, have been feuding with Team Taz. Allin and Rhodes defeated Powerhouse Hobbs and Ricky Starks at Winter is Coming on December 2, Allin’s most recent match.

Serena Deeb will defend the NWA World Women’s Championship against Tay Conti tonight. Conti will have The Dark Order in her corner.

PAC will take on Eddie Kingston this evening. Since returning to AEW in November, PAC has been feuding with members of Eddie Kingston’s stable. He has defeated The Butcher and The Blade in singles matches, while he and Rey Fenix lost to Butcher and Blade in tag action.

The Elite have been advertised as being in six-man tag action against unnamed opponents. It is expected that the Elite trio will be comprised of Kenny Omega and The Good Brothers.

Chuck Taylor will face Miro. If Taylor loses, he will be forced to become Miro’s “Young Boy” until Kip Sabian and Penelope Ford’s wedding.

Our live coverage begins at 8 p.m. Eastern time.

Show Report —

Earlier today, Eddie Kingston said he would bust PAC up and send him back home.

PAC (w/ Lucha Bros) defeated Eddie Kingston (w/ Butcher, Blade, & Bunny)

This was a good, hard-hitting match. Kingston’s selling was the best part.

PAC exploded out before the bell with a shotgun dropkick before landing a Fosbury flop on the outside. Back in the ring, PAC continued to put the boots to Kingston before hitting a missile dropkick. Kingston countered a corner attack with a second-rope knee drop.

Kingston sent PAC out of the ring, and Bunny dug her nails into PAC’s face while Kingston distracted the official. While Fénix complained to the official, Kingston hit an exploder suplex on the floor. While the two teams exchanged words on the floor, Kingston hit a neckbreaker, beginning a targeted attack on PAC’s neck.

A series of chops from Kingston allowed him to maintain control. They had a striking battle in the center of the ring as PAC fought back with forearms before making his comeback with a sequence of strikes and a German suplex. PAC laid in mid kicks, but Kingston fired up with strikes and a backdrop suplex for two.

PAC stunned Kingston on the top rope with an enziguiri before following it up with a superplex. He continued the offense until Kingston popped up with a big lariat for two. PAC countered a DDT and hit a running dropkick before landing the Black Arrow for the win.

After the match, PAC locked on the Brutalizer until Butcher and Blade ran in to break it up. As they all squared off, Lance Archer’s music hit, and he and Jake Roberts made their way to the ring. Archer chased off Kingston and co. before exchanging words with PAC.

**********

Miro (w/ Kip Sabian & Penelope Ford) defeated Chuck Taylor (w/ Orange Cassidy)

If Miro wins, Taylor has to be his butler until Sabian and Ford’s wedding.

Miro posed at the bell, so Taylor attacked with strikes before sending Miro to the floor. Taylor sent Miro into the staging area multiple times before landing a tope con hilo. He continued the attack on the floor, sending Miro into the ring post and landing a diving knee drop. Taylor went to the top rope, but was distracted when Sabian attacked Cassidy. Miro took advantage with a Samoan drop.

It was elementary from there as Miro hit a thrust kick and locked on Game Over, forcing Taylor to tap out in under four minutes.

Matt Hardy and Private Party were interviewed after the tag team signed Hardy as their manager. Hardy had to speak first, but Private Party was still excited about Hardy’s management… that is, until Quen complained about Hardy taking a large chunk of their earnings. They called Hardy a “money-grabbing carny.” Hardy said that Private Party was nothing before him, and demanded that they listen to him from now on.

Inner Circle’s New Year’s Resolutions

Jericho said “who wants to start?” Hager simply yelled “championships, yeah!” MJF wanted to strengthen bonds with everyone else in the group, and also get rid of fat people. Ortiz wanted to master a sofrito recipe.

The resolution for Jericho was winning the AEW tag team championships with MJF. Santana took offense to this, as he and Ortiz are the Inner Circle’s designated tag team. Guevara said that he understands what’s going on here: Jericho is a “tag team slut.”

MJF stood up for Jericho as the rest of the group calmed each other down. Jericho said that any one of them could team with another and win the championships. So next week, there will be a three-way match to determine the official tag team of the Inner Circle. The teams will be MJF & Jericho, Santana & Ortiz, and Sammy & Hager (ha, ha). MJF wrapped it up with the group’s signature middle fingers.

**********

The Dark Order were interviewed about what’s next for the group. Evil Uno said that they will perform in Brodie Lee’s name, and they have to be better people. It all starts next week when Hangman Page will team with the Dark Order again. Silver was extremely excited. Reynolds asked when they’d know for sure about Page joining the Dark Order, and Page said he’d make a decision next week.

An excellent video played recapping the background behind Brian Cage challenging Darby Allin.

Kenny Omega, Don Callis, and the Young Bucks arrived for their upcoming match. They agreed to have separate entrances.

After Omega’s entrance, Callis took the mic and said “the band is back together” before introducing Omega’s “two best friends in the world,” the Good Brothers. The Bucks were shown backstage, offended because it appeared that Callis was talking about the Bucks.

Kenny Omega & The Good Brothers (Doc Gallows & Karl Anderson) (w/ Don Callis) defeated Varsity Blondes (Griff Garrison & Brian Pillman Jr.) & Danny Limelight

Omega and co. attacked before the bell, taking control on the floor. Limelight got a hope spot in the ring, but Gallows downed him with a clothesline. Varsity Blondes sent the Good Brothers packing, allowing the match to reset.

The Blondes maintained control on Omega with frequent tags until Limelight tagged in and a Gallows kick allowed Omega to hit the Kotaro Crusher. Omega, Gallows, and Anderson kept up the attack through a commercial break.

Back from break, Limelight landed a springboard hurricanrana and avoided a German before hitting a kick, allowing him to reach Pillman for the hot tag. Pillman ran wild on all three opponents before teaming with Garrison to hit a doomsday blockbuster for two on Anderson.

Omega ran into the ring and his team regained control, hitting a triple neckbreaker, but their opponents broke it up. A big boot from Anderson got another two. The Good Brothers went for the Gun Stun, but Limelight tagged in. Anderson stopped Limelight’s attack with a spinebuster, and the Good Brothers hit the Magic Killer for three.

As Omega and the Good Brothers celebrated, Jon Moxley’s music played, and he ran in for a fight, but he was outnumbered. The Lucha Bros ran out to even the odds, and some AEW Dark talent ran out to break up the fight. Moxley landed a tope on a big pile before the Young Bucks entered the fray to try and talk Moxley down. The Lucha Bros downed the Young Bucks with superkicks, and a wild free-for-all brawl ensued as Omega and Callis escaped.

**********

The Waiting Room with Dr. Britt Baker

Rebel introduced Baker to start the segment, and then Baker introduced Cody Rhodes as her guest. Baker went through a campy comedy schtick, which was intentionally bad, as Rebel laughed along obnoxiously, before Cody came out.

Baker congratulated Cody on his and Brandi’s pregnancy. Cody was about to talk about the year to come, but Baker interrupted him and introduced Jade Cargill as her surprise guest.

Cargill grabbed the mic and said that nobody cares about Brandi’s pregnancy. She demanded an opponent and said that if Brandi ever returns, she was going to beat her ass. Red Velvet entered and she and Cargill slapped each other before getting into a pull-apart brawl.

It cut to a video of Baker’s attack on Thunder Rosa from a couple weeks ago. It was followed by a video promo from Rosa, who said that Baker and Rosa would wrestle each other at Beach Break on February 3. Baker complained and said that it wasn’t happening, but a graphic for it came up on the screen. Baker closed the segment.

That was one of the worst segments in Dynamite history. Everything was disjointed, they tried to fit way too much into one segment, and the one advertised thing about the segment –– an interview with Cody Rhodes –– didn’t even happen, making two straight segments where that occurred.

**********

FTR (Dax Harwood & Cash Wheeler) (w/ Tully Blanchard) defeated Jurassic Express (Jungle Boy & Marko Stunt)

This was a strong tag match, with Stunt holding his own in there against one of the best tag teams in the world.

They wrestled around for a bit at the start before the two teams faced off against each other in the ring. Harwood shoved Stunt into the corner, but Stunt fired back with a slap, which just made Harwood mad. FTR began an extended beatdown of Stunt with frequent tags and power moves.

A tijeras and dropkick allowed Stunt to escape to Jungle Boy for a hot tag. Jurassic Express hit double up kicks before Stunt used assists from Jungle Boy to dispatch both of FTR. Stunt landed a tope through Jungle Boy’s legs before Jungle Boy landed a quebrada.

During the break, FTR took control of the match once again with a double team attack on Stunt. Stunt escaped a Gory Special with a roll-up before avoiding a powerbomb to reach Jungle Boy for his second hot tag. Jungle Boy landed a series of strikes, concluding with a backstabber on Harwood for two.

Jungle Boy and Harwood fought on the top rope before Jungle Boy landed a top-rope hurricanrana, but Wheeler broke up the pin. Harwood rolled up Jungle Boy with a handful of trunks, but he kicked out at two. Stunt tagged in and went for Sliced Bread, but Harwood countered it and leveled Stunt with a lariat.

Harwood beat Stunt down in the corner, but Stunt fought his way out and hit Sliced Bread for two. Stunt rolled to the outside, where Tully rammed him into the ring post. Jungle Boy confronted Tully, but ran into a lariat from Wheeler, who proceeded to send him into the barricade. Back in the ring, FTR hit the Big Rig on Stunt for the win.

NWA Women’s World Championship: Serena Deeb (c) defeated Tay Conti (w/ Anna Jay)

Having watched Conti’s entire NXT career, I am absolutely floored by how good she’s looked in her last two AEW appearances.

They performed chain wrestling at the start as the commentators discussed both women’s martial arts chops. Deeb applied a quick cradle for two, but Conti fought back through applying a heel hook. Deeb countered it into a chinlock, but Conti hit a judo throw as the match reset.

Conti went for a triangle sleeper, but Deeb escaped and landed a sliding lariat for two. They exchanged cradles until Conti downed Deeb with a pump kick. Conti maintained control with judo throws during the break.

A full nelson into a stunner got two for Conti. Deeb countered another hold into a stretch muffler, but Conti reached the ropes. Conti countered the Serenity Lock into a cradle, but Deeb, hit a gutbuster for two.

Deeb perched Conti up top and used the ropes as leverage to apply a Gory Special. Conti evaded the follow-up and hit a pump kick. She went for the Tay-KO, but Deeb countered into the Deeb-tox for the win.

TNT Championship: Darby Allin (c) defeated Brian Cage (w/ Ricky Starks & HOOK)

This match was awesome. These guys worked the David vs. Goliath formula to perfection.

Taz joined commentary before the match, where it was revealed that only two members of Team Taz were allowed at ringside, explaining Powerhouse Hobbs’ absence.

Allin immediately kicked out Cage’s legs and landed a low tope suicida before driving Cage into the barricade. He went for another tope, but Cage caught him out of midair and suplexed him on the floor.

Back in the ring, Allin landed a defiant slap, but Allin clotheslined him down. Cage then pressed Allin above his head and tossed him through a ringside table onto concrete. That was insane, and Allin was busted open. Cage tossed Allin back in the ring and continued the beatdown.

Cage hit a running uppercut and a gamenguiri followed by a release German suplex. He repeatedly threw Allin into the corner and laid in ground and pound, keeping up the beatdown through a commercial break.

Allin went for a dive, so Cage caught him and hit an F5, but Allin kicked out at one. Cage hit a series of three powerbombs, releasing on the third. A defiant Allin flipped Cage off, so Cage powerbombed Allin onto the ramp. Cage brought Allin back into the ring with a suplex over the ropes, but Allin once again kicked out at one, infuriating Cage.

Cage pulled out the ring steps and set up to F5 Allin onto them, but Allin fought out and bit Cage’s hand, sending him onto the steps. Allin then landed a Coffin Drop onto Cage on the steps. Cage barely made it back into the ring at the count of nine.

Allin laid in slaps, but Cage caught a Coffin Drop attempt. He tried to apply a bear hug, but Allin bit his way out and hit a stunner. Allin then tied a belt around Cage’s ankles, but Cage fought back anyway. Cage removed the belt, but Allin hit Code Red for a close near fall. Allin dropkicked Cage into the corner and hit a double stomp.

Starks tried to get involved, but lights went out and Sting appeared with a bat, dispatching Starks. Cage went for an avalanche F5, but Allin countered it into crucifix bomb to retain the championship.

Snow fell and Allin and Sting stood tall in the ring to end the show.

NJPW Best of the Super Juniors night 8 results: Taguchi vs. Takahashi

Best of the Super Juniors 25 continued Sunday in Aichi with four B Block matches, all of which delivered. Here are the results from the show:

Prelim results:

  • Chase Owens and Taiji Ishimori defeated Tiger Mask and Tomoyuki Oka when Owens defeated Oka with the package piledriver.
  • YOSHI-HASHI and YOH defeated Flip Gordon and Shota Umino when YOSHI-HASHI submitted Umino with the butterfly lock.
  • Minoru Suzuki and Yoshinobu Kanemaru defeated Will Ospreay and Gedo when Kanemaru pinned Gedo with the deep impact DDT.
  • Tetsuya Naito and BUSHI defeated ACH and Toa Henare when Naito pinned Henare with the Destino.

B Block matches:

Marty Scurll defeated Desperado

This was very good. I think Desperado has been really good in this tournament so far and for the first time in his career is really standing out as a potential top talent. Scurll is always consistently great and I think is actually a bit underrated in how good he actually is, he’s one of the best around honestly.

Scurll immediately attacked Desperado, looking to break his fingers early. Scurll tries for a monkey flip, but Desperado dumps him to the outside and throws him into the audience, who clears out as they brawl all around the arena. Beverages are thrown, trash cans are used as weapons and we get a nice view of the arena as the two eventually make it back to the ring before the 20 count.

Desperado focuses on the knee as he starts to take over the match. Scurll comes back and tries for the chickenwing but Desperado takes him down and applies the stretch muffler. He eventually goes to the outside to get a chair. Scurll tries to block him, but Desperado takes him down and beats him up with some chairs.

Back in the ring, Scurll catches Desperado with a roll-up, then stomps on Desperado’s hand. Scurll looks to use the umbrella, but the referee won’t let him. Desperado runs straight into the turnbuckle and into the chickenwing.

The referee is taken down as Scurll looks to use the chair Desperado introduced. The referee comes to and takes it away as Desperado looks for a low blow. Scurll blocks him, breaks his finger and applies the chickenwing. With nowhere to go, Scurll submits.

Chris Sabin defeated Dragon Lee

A very good match. I was wondering if there would be a styles clash here, but there wasn’t. Like most of Sabin’s matches, they’re a touch slower than other matches in the tournament but they still kept the pace pretty hot.

Back and forth early. Sabin takes Dragon Lee to the top rope and hits a giant superplex. Dragon Lee fires back by sending Sabin to the outside and lands a giant tope con hilo to the floor.

They fight back and forth until Sabin hits a dropkick that sends Lee to the corner. Lee grabs him and suplexes him into the post. They meet on the apron where Sabin superkicks Lee to the floor. Sabin hits for a hurricanrana, then wipes out Lee again with another dive to the floor.

Lee regains his momentum back in the ring as they start to trade offense, both being taken down after lariats. Sabin connects with a boot to the corner and looks to do something off the top rope, but Lee trips him and stomps him off the top rope for a near fall. Lee looks for his finish, but Sabin escapes and hits a springboard tornado DDT.

Lee fires back with a running knee strike and lifts up Sabin again but Sabin counters with a DDT. Lee counters a cradle shock attempt, but Sabin strikes him with a super kick and hits the cradle shock for the win.

KUSHIDA defeated SHO

I wish this match was a bit more…dynamic? This was a very well wrestled match and the last half of the match was very good, but I was hoping for something a bit more flashier. They wanted to a tell a story, though, and they did a good job here.

Early in the match they do some chain wrestling, with neither getting the advantage. KUSHIDA hooks in an arm and rolls around, looking to wrench it in. SHO catches him in an a headlock, but KUSHIDA takes him back down. They traded ankle lock takedowns.

KUSHIDA took down SHO, focused on one of his arms and dropkicked it. SHO deadlifted him, slamming him back on the floor. He grinds down KUSHIDA with an ankle lock but KUSHIDA fights out of it, then sweeps down SHO and works on his leg. They fight for control until KUSHIDA gets the better of SHO.

KUSHIDA fights back, looking for the kimura. SHO counters with a tilt-a-whirl powerslam, then repeatedly slams KUSHIDA with a triple powerbomb. KUSHIDA lands on his feet after a German attempt and starts connecting with some offense.

KUSHIDA locks in the hoverboard lock but SHO fights back until KUSHIDA hits the Back of the Future and scores the win with the first pinfall attempt of the match.

Hiromu Takahashi defeated Ryusuke Taguchi

This was a really good match. Nice heat, great moves, good finish. It was very much the textbook New Japan main event matches, and that isn’t a knock since most of the time they do it so well. It helps that Hiromu Takahashi is an excellent athlete and Taguchi knows when to turn it on.

Taguchi gets the ankle lock in early, but Takahashi bails and goes to the outside to recover. They exchange offense until Taguchi takes him into the crowd. He runs from one side of the building to the other looking for a lariat, but Takahashi ducks and Taguchi ends up colliding into a wall.

Takahashi gets Taguchi back into the ring and starts working him over, stomping on his head and even using a tarantula like maneuver on the ropes.

Taguchi tries to make a comeback with his butt. The first two times it fails, but third time’s a charm. He follows with a springboard crossbody to the floor, then a tope con hilo that wipes out Takahashi. Back in the ring, they brawl until Takahashi takes out Taguchi with a belly to belly that sends him into the turnbuckle.

Taguchi takes down Takahashi and hits the dodon but Takahashi kicks out. He immediately follows with the ankle lock then goes for a second dodon but Takahashi counters with a roll-up. Taguchi tries it again, but this time can only dump Takahashi on the back of his neck. He sinks in the ankle lock, but Takahashi escapes.

Takahashi takes down Taguchi with a hurricanrana and applies a triangle choke. Taguchi tries to fight out of it, but can’t and winds up submitting.
