North Carolina town honoring former resident Andre the Giant

Ellerbe, a tiny town in North Carolina, is honoring a pro wrestling giant.

On Thursday (April 23), Ellerbe is unveiling a roadside marker celebrating the fact that Andre once called the town home. He owned a ranch just outside of Ellerbe town limits, and Andre’s ashes were spread there after passing away on a trip to France in 1993.

The marker will be located at the intersection of NC Highway 73 and Old NC Highway 220. It reads: “Andre The Giant. 1946-1993. Actor and professional wrestler. Was born Andre Roussimoff. Known for role in The Princess Bride in 1987. Lived nearby.”

Ellerber has a population of fewer than 1000 people, listed at 864 as of the 2020 census.

North Carolina’s Department of Natural & Cultural Resources wrote:

  • On Aug. 22, 1978, Roussimoff made a decision that surprised many fans but delighted local residents. He purchased nine acres of land near Ellerbe in Richmond County. Over the next decade he continued to expand his property until he owned a 194-acre ranch along Big Mountain Creek. This land became his refuge. Although he was one of the most famous athletes in the world, in Ellerbe he could enjoy a slower pace of life, participate in the community, and even take part in local civic efforts. One of these efforts involved opposing a proposed radioactive waste site in Richmond County, where his voice carried significant influence.
  • The people of Ellerbe came to know Roussimoff as a gentle, thoughtful man who valued privacy and friendship.

WWE also celebrated Andre last week by inducting his match against Hulk Hogan from WrestleMania III into the Hall of Fame as the 2026 Immortal Moment Award winner. Andre’s daughter Robin and Hogan’s son Nick were there to receive the award.

Andre was the WWE Hall of Fame’s first-ever inductee, having been posthumously honored in 1993.

WWE inducting Hulk Hogan vs. Andre the Giant match into Hall of Fame

Hulk Hogan vs. Andre the Giant from WrestleMania III is the second match to ever earn a WWE Hall of Fame induction.

It was announced today that the WrestleMania III main event — where Hogan defeated Andre to retain the WWF Championship — will receive the WWE Immortal Moment Award at the April 17 Hall of Fame ceremony in Las Vegas. The award, established in 2025, exists to recognize the most important matches in WWE history. Steve Austin vs. Bret Hart from WrestleMania 13 was the first match to be inducted.

WrestleMania III took place at Michigan’s Pontiac Silverdome in 1987 and still stands as one of the biggest shows in WWE history, with the company forever replaying the moment where Hogan slammed Andre.

Inducting this match gives WWE the opportunity to honor Hogan after his death in July 2025. He first joined the WWE Hall of Fame in 2005 and later was inducted again as a member of the nWo.

Following Andre’s passing in 1993, he was recognized as the first-ever inductee into the WWE Hall of Fame.

Dolby Live at Park MGM in Vegas is hosting the Hall of Fame ceremony on the Friday of WrestleMania 42 week. Here is the updated list of honorees:

2026 WWE Hall of Fame class —

  • Stephanie McMahon
  • AJ Styles
  • Demolition (Ax & Smash)
  • Dennis Rodman
  • Sid Vicious (posthumously being inducted as a Legacy Award winner)
  • Bad News Brown (posthumously being inducted as a Legacy Award winner)

DragonKingKarl: October 2025 Q&A show

On a new DragonKingKarl Show, it’s time for Karl Stern’s monthly question and answer podcast.

He explores an interesting quirk that happened the night Hulk Hogan lost the WWF Championship to Andre the Giant on The Main Event in 1988.

Also, where does the old Global Wrestling Federation (GWF) rank historically?

He also looks at three different eras of pro wrestling — 1980s, 1990s and today — to see what second and third tier wrestling promotions did and how they are viewed in a historical context including the AWA and ECW.

John Cena names all-time WWE WrestleMania dream opponent

John Cena wishes an alternate universe existed where he and Andre the Giant could have faced each other.

Along with his WWE retirement tour, Cena has been appearing at Fan Expo conventions this year and taking part in Q&A sessions with fans. One of those events took place in Chicago this summer with the video being uploaded to YouTube this week. A fan asked Cena who he would choose to face in the main event of WrestleMania if he could go back in time and pick anyone from wrestling history.

“Just selfishly, Andre, because he was like the measuring stick,” Cena responded. “The folklore behind Andre the Giant is mythical, in both physical as his presence but also in like the folklore of the fraternity of the brotherhood of wrestling, especially the WWF territory. I’m sure it’s across the world, because Andre was a global phenomenon. But, selfishly, yes, that would be the one: Andre the Giant.”

Cena competed in his last-ever WrestleMania earlier this year, defeating Cody Rhodes for the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 41. Cena later dropped the title back to Rhodes at SummerSlam.

There are only five WWE appearances remaining before Cena retires. Next up is a trip to Australia for Crown Jewel: Perth this Saturday, where Cena will face off against an old rival in AJ Styles.

Cena’s last match will be held in Washington, D.C. on December 13 on WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event. It’s expected that Gunther will be his final opponent.

Andre the Giant battle royal slated for next WWE SmackDown

The annual Andre the Giant memorial battle royal will take place on the April 18 WWE SmackDown, the promotion has revealed.

Introduced in 2014 as an annual WrestleMania tradition, the Andre battle royal will be held on the SmackDown before Mania for the fifth consecutive year next Friday, April 18. The battle royal has been held annually since its inception with the exception of 2020 when the match was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

A John Cena appearance, plus two more matches are also set for next Friday’s show, branded WrestleMania SmackDown.

Before he challenges Cody Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Championship on night two of WrestleMania 41, Cena will appear on the April 18 SmackDown.

The WWE Tag Team Championship will also be on the line on WrestleMania SmackDown, with The Street Profits (Montez Ford and Angelo Dawkins) defending against top contenders Motor City Machine Guns (Alex Shelley and Chris Sabin).

A women’s division trios bout is also set for next week’s episode, with Chelsea Green, Piper Niven, and Alba Fyre facing Zelina Vega, Katana Chance, and Kayden Carter.

This Week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter Back Issue

Monday Update

  • Bryan and I will be back tonight talking Raw, the news coming out of Raw and other notes with Wrestling Observer Radio.
  • There has been a lot all over the web including from WWE with today as the 32nd anniversary of the death of Andre the Giant. We had all been led to believe Andre passed away on January 27, 1993, having to do with the time difference and it was still that day in the U.S. when we first got the word. However, he passed away in France in his sleep. He was staying at a hotel after attending his father’s funeral and came back to the hotel at 1 a.m. on the morning of January 28. He went to his room and the belief is that he died in his sleep. Patric Laprade, who did the great biography of Andre, went to France and saw the death certificate listing January 28 and also spoke to the doorman at the hotel who confirmed Andre as being alive after midnight. But that January 27 date was used for decades and it’s one of those things that even though evidence showed it to be inaccurate, it’s still used as the day of his death in many circles.
  • The Royal Rumble has topped 60,000 as far as tickets out goes. If it tops 64,200, it would be the largest non-WrestleMania show ever in North America. The record is for a 1986 match in Toronto with Hulk Hogan vs. Paul Orndorff.
  • As noted on our show last night, Janel Grant’s attorney, Ann Callis, has until Friday to both make her arguments why the NDA agianst Grant should be terminated which would allow the lawsuit to move forward.  She also said she will be preparing a new lawsuit. It will be very interesting what if anything is added or subtracted from the prior suit.
  • Fightful was the first to report the actual signing of Jordynne Grace by WWE. It’s been known for months that she was going there when her TNA contract ended and we also confirmed today that she has put pen to paper. It’s been expected she would debut in the Rumble, but that is not confirmed, but she is scheduled to be in Indianapolis this weekend.
  • Raw is tonight at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta.  Sami Zayn vs. Drew McIntyre, Bianca Belair & Naomi vs. Liv Morgan & Raquel Rodriguez in a non-title match, War Raiders vs. JD McDonagh & Dominik Mysterio for the tag titles, and Logan Paul and Cody Rhodes have also been announced. The continuing of late buys for Raw, a phenomenon that started this month with the move to Netflix, continued here as they are at 11,500 which is 4,000 up from ten days before the show. They’ve been pushing the Sami never beats Drew storyline and at  some point one would think they have to pay it off.
  • NXT is sold out  tomorrow at Center Stage although that only holds 745 fans. Bianca Belair & Naomi defend the tag titles against Jakara Jackson & Lash Legend, Fallon Henley defends the North American title against Shotzi, Giulia & Bayley vs. Roxanne Perez & Corad Jade, Trick Williams vs. Wes Lee, Ethan Page vs. Cedric Alexander and the Grayson Waller Effect with Oba Femi. I expect another big number given the women’s tag titles, and the Bayley match.
  • Eddie Alvarez said he suffered a broken jaw in his fight with Jeremy Stephens on the  Bare Knuckle show at the Wells Fargo Center.
  • Ilia Topuria may be defending the featherweight title against Alexander Volkanovski, the former champion, on 4/12.  Bo Nickal on his podcast said the fight hasn’t been announced but he’s said he’s breaking the story and it’s official. He has the same management team as Topuria. Topuria knocked out Volkanovski, the only person ever to do so, to win the title on February 17,  2024 and said that he believes Volkanovski should get a rematch.
  • Mistico & Mascara Dorada vs. Esfinge & Templario has been added to the 2/8 MLW show in Atlanta at Center Stage.
  • Legendario is getting a real test tomorrow night at Arena Mexico in having a singles match for the CMLL light heavyweight title with Averno.
  • Rob Van Dam and Bobby Fulton have been going at it on social media.  Van Dam wrote today, “Until bad business Bobby taps out–which means admitting his lying and I’m telling 100 percent the truth, I will not let up. 34 years of a reputation of being honest and genuine and then this asshole thinks he can make money off calling me a liar? F*** that. F*** you Bobby.”
  • Wrestling Revolver is doing a show on Friday night at the Square Game in Indianapolis head-to-head with Smackdown in the market with Myron Reed vs. Trey Miguel for the Revolver world title, AJ Francis & Rich Swann & KC Navarro vs.  BDE & Brent Oakley & KC Jacobs and Paul Walter Hauser vs. Steve Maclin.
  • Pro Wrestling Revolucion is Wednesday night at Mount Pleasant High School in San Jose with Super Crazy Komander, El HIjio del Vikingo, La Estrelola and El HIjo del Vikingo on the show.
  • Bianca Belair and Montez Ford will be appearing at WWE Night Wednesday night at the Indiana Pacers game with the Detroit Pistons promoting Royal Rumble.
  • The appliance company Bosch will have a Super Bowl commercial with a bodybuilder actor portraying Randy Savage.
  • Pretty Deadly are featured in the current Muscle & Fitness magazine.
  • Impact on Thursday has Josh Alexander & Eric Young vs. Icarus & Travis Williams, Wes Lee vs. Ace Austin, Mustafa Ali and Cora Jade wrestling and Nic Nemeth doing an interview.

Portland Wrestlecast: A talk with Nick Wayne’s grandfather ‘Moondog’ Ed Moretti

There’s a new book out — The Encyclopedia of Portland Wrestling from the House of Action — and on this episode of the Portland Wrestlecast, I talk to both author Mike Rodgers and “Moondog” Ed Moretti, former wrestler and the grandfather of current AEW star Nick Wayne.

We talk about Ed’s family, seeing them on AEW TV, his career, ribs like the time Andre the Giant farted on Buddy Rose, fun road stories, and, of course, the book.

From wrestlers you knew came through Portland like Roddy Piper to wrestlers you didn’t know came through the territory like Jake Roberts, the book is over 500 pages of information and history.

This show has a lot of fun and wrestling history. Check it out.
