Andrade congratulates former WWE rival on title win

Andrade was happy to see his former WWE rival Carmelo Hayes win gold on SmackDown last Friday.

The December 26 SmackDown episode saw Hayes capture his first WWE main roster gold by defeating Ilja Dragunov to win the United States Championship. Andrade took notice of the result, sending out a tweet this morning congratulating Hayes and thanking him for the matches they had together when Andrade was with WWE.

“Congratulations brother!! @Carmelo_WWE,” Andrade wrote. “You deserve it! Thank you for those great matches!”

In 2024, Andrade and Hayes faced off in a best-of-seven series on SmackDown. Their feud was never fully settled, as the seventh match ended with LA Knight interfering and causing a no contest. That led to a triple threat match for the United States title at Crown Jewel 2024 where Knight defeated Andrade and Hayes.

Hayes responded to Andrade’s tweet this morning and thanked him for how he helped Hayes improve in the ring through their matches.

“Amigo! Glad I got to wrestle you all over the world! Got better every time I shared the ring with you! Thank you bro”

Andrade, who was released from his WWE contract in September, is now free to sign elsewhere following a holdup with his non-compete clause. He’s set to compete at NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 20 and could return to AEW now that he’s cleared to sign there.

WOL: How will 2025 trends affect wrestling in 2026?

It’s the last WOL Saturday of the year with Jim Valley.

Today’s show looks ahead at what could happen in 2026, back at 2025, and some trends that aren’t going to go away simply because the ball dropped in Times Square.

We’ll preview AEW’s Worlds End with a tease of at least one prediction: people will complain that it’s too long – AGAIN.

Carmelo Hayes had a great match as he pinned Ilja Dragunov for the U.S. Title on an otherwise very standard episode of WWE SmackDown.

For better or worse, a lot of this year’s trends could also affect 2026.

We’ll take a look into our crystal ball and see what could lie ahead for wrestling companies all over the world in 2026.

Andrade to appear at upcoming House of Glory event

Andrade has a new indie date announced.

House of Glory revealed on Monday that the former WWE star will compete at their No Turning Back event that will take place on February 20 in New York City.

“On Friday, February 20, 2026, Andrade El Idolo steps into a HOG ring in New York City!!!,” they wrote.

Andrade made a surprise appearance over the weekend during a HOG event, confronting HOG World Champion Charles Mason. That ended with Andrade laying out Mason and posing with the championship, indicating a future title match was coming.

The last few months have been tumultuous for Andrade, who was fired from WWE for cause in September. He attempted to make his return to AEW soon after, but it quickly became known that WWE had invoked a one year no-compete clause upon his firing, preventing him from wrestling anywhere. It was reported by Fightful on Monday that Andrade had secured a waiver from WWE through a new lawyer, allowing him to sign wherever he pleases.

In addition to his surprise appearance at HOG, Andrade also appeared via video at NJPW Road to Tokyo Dome, revealing himself as the new “business backer” for United Empire and will team with them at Wrestle Kingdom 20.

Report: Andrade free to sign elsewhere after WWE no-compete waived

Andrade is a free agent once more.

Fightful reported on Monday that Andrade’s deal with WWE came to an end around December 12, officially becoming a free agent and free to sign wherever he pleases. He showcased that over the weekend, not only appearing at House of Glory, but also revealed himself as the new benefactor of the United Empire at NJPW’s Road to Tokyo Dome event on Monday morning.

According to Fightful, Rush introduced Andrade to an attorney and representative that has worked closely with WWE “for years” and as a result was able to get his one year no-complete caused waived, allowing Andrade to sign elsewhere.

Andrade’s visa was also terminated when he was fired, but Fightful reports that he is back in the United States for now and the situation is being handled.

When Andrade was fired for cause in September, he quickly made his return to AEW, attacking Kenny Omega and joining the Don Callis Family. Once that angle took place, however, it was revealed that WWE had enacted the one year non-compete due to being fired for cause, preventing him from working elsewhere.

After being asked about Andrade during a media call on Monday, Tony Khan told fans to “stay tuned to AEW” for what is next.

Tony Khan addresses potential Andrade return, free agents, AEW holiday schedule

Tony Khan’s message to AEW fans curious about the return of Andrade is a simple one: stay tuned.

The AEW head spoke to the media for an hour Monday (available below) ahead of a week that features two holiday-themed TV shows, the end of Continental Classic pool play, and Saturday’s Worlds End.

When asked about Andrade given the news of him working with AEW partner NJPW, Khan he has a lot of respect for Andrade and that fans should “stay tuned to AEW” for what’s next. The former WWE star made his surprise return to AEW earlier this year, but soon disappeared due to a non-compete with WWE being enforced.

Khan was asked about the Continental Classic scheduling and potentially moving it due to the holidays. He said it’s great to have wrestling programming around this time of year and there’s a tradition of wrestling and other sports like the NFL around the holidays. He said associates the holidays with pro wrestling and likes how the Classic adds some must-see value to the shows.

Asked about his approach to free agents and how to attract other big names, Khan said he is happy with who he did sign this year like Thekla, Mike Bailey and Kevin Knight and that he wanted to add more complimentary pieces and didn’t attempt to take “big swings” like he had done in the past.

Khan also addressed his Madison Square Garden comments made this past weekend, noting someone who used to work at the venue was interested in hosting the first-ever Dynamite in 2019. Khan was interested and after having some calls, he was then told it wasn’t going to be viable for MSG. The person now works in another arena/building AEW frequents a lot.

Khan also talked about the return of MJF, the WBD/Paramount/Netflix battle and more.

Former AEW & WWE wrestler set for NJPW return at Wrestle Kingdom 20

Andrade El Idolo is returning to New Japan Pro Wrestling.

He appeared via video on Monday’s Road to Tokyo Dome show at Korakuen Hall, revealing himself as the “business backer” of the United Empire. Andrade will also be one of the mystery members on the United Empire side of a 10-man tag at Wrestle Kingdom 20 against David Finlay, Gabe Kidd, Drilla Moloney, Hiromu Takahashi, and Shingo Takagi.

“My name is Andrade El Idolo. La Sombra is back in Japan,” Andrade said in the video. “I have business all over the world, but in Japan I have a very good business with my friends.”

Andrade has not wrestled for NJPW since the promotion’s Fantasticamania tour with CMLL in January 2015. He previously held the IWGP Intercontinental Championship in the company, defeating Shinsuke Nakamura for the title at Arena Mexico in 2013 before losing it back to him at NJPW Kizuna Road 2013 less than two months later.

Andrade is believed to be under a 12-month no-compete clause with WWE stemming from his release from the company in September. He announced recently that WWE granted him permission to appear on a WWC show in Puerto Rico, and he also recently appeared at a House of Glory event earlier this month.

The updated Wrestle Kingdom 20 lineup is below:

NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 20 (Sunday, January 4, 2026 on NJPW World) —

  • Winner-take-all match: IWGP World Heavyweight Champion Konosuke Takeshita vs. IWGP Global Heavyweight Champion Yota Tsuji

Andrade makes surprise appearance at House of Glory event

Andrade made a surprise appearance in the United States on Friday.

At a House of Glory event, the former WWE and AEW star surprised the crowd by appearing in the ring, confronting Charles Mason, the HOG World Champion. Mason went for the attack but Andrade ended up laying him out with the hammerlock DDT. He then took Mason’s championship and held it high, indicating he wanted a future championship match.

Andrade’s immediate future remains in the air as WWE has chosen to uphold a one-year no compete clause, something they implemented after firing Andrade for cause earlier this year. Andrade initially believed that he had no non-compete and returned to AEW at their sixth anniversary show. However, that was when information about the non-compete came out, preventing Andrade from continuing his assocation with AEW at least through the next year.

Despite this, Andrade was allowed to work in Puerto Rico recently, becoming the new WWC Universal Champion. He claimed that WWE sent him a letter just hours prior to the event granting him approval only to work the one specific show.

Andrade wins WWC Universal Championship in return to Puerto Rico

Andrade is the new WWC Universal Champion.

He defeated Xavant at WWC Lockout on Saturday night at the Cancha Pepín Cestero in Bayamón, Puerto Rico. Andrade revealed just hours before the show that his lawyer had received a letter from WWE granting him approval to perform on the event despite the 12-month no-compete clause he is currently under. He clarified that the letter only cleared him to work this specific show.

WWC wrote about Andrade’s title win:

“ANDRADE IS A CHAMPION IN HIS RETURN TO THE RING

Andrade El Idolo has returned to the rings tonight in the event of the Puerto Rican company, WWC, Lockout, beating Xavant to become the NEW WWC Universal Champion.”

This is the second world title Andrade has won since leaving WWE. He also won The Crash Heavyweight Championship in October.

The WWC Universal Championship dates back to 1982 and has changed hands 165 times. Andrade is now the 50th wrestler to hold the title. Company founder Carlos Colón holds the record with 26 reigns and nearly 4,000 days as champion. He is followed by Ray González with 24 reigns and over 2,000 days, while Colón’s son Carlito ranks third with 17 reigns and more than 1,300 days as champion.

Andrade says WWE is allowing him to wrestle in Puerto Rico

Andrade says he is set to return to the ring tonight.

During a recent interview with Sportskeeda, Andrade said WWE sent a signed letter to his lawyer allowing him to participate in World Wrestling Council’s show in Puerto Rico on Saturday December 13, where he will challenge Xavant for the WWC Universal Championship.

Andrade said:

“I want to say thank you to my lawyer because my lawyer now has a letter from WWE. Because we had some little problems because I have the no-compete for 12 months.”

“Today my lawyer texted me and told me that Andrade, I have a letter signed that you can participate tonight in Puerto Rico in the company WWC.”

Andrade clarified that the letter only clears him to work this specific show.

“I hope back soon to AEW. I don’t know when I’m back. For now, the letter is for just this show for Puerto Rico.”

Andrade had previously been scheduled to wrestle for WWC in October, but was later pulled from the event due to his contractual situation with WWE.

WWC Lockout: The Closing of the Season 2025 is scheduled for the Cancha Pepín Cestero in Bayamón, Puerto Rico, and is the promotion’s final event of the year.

Andrade addresses whether divorce from Charlotte Flair led to WWE exit

Andrade addressed his divorce from Charlotte Flair and speculation surrounding his departure from WWE during a recent interview.

Flair and Andrade married in May 2022, with their divorce finalized a little over two years later. Speaking on The Ring, Andrade said he was responsible for the marriage ending and emphasized that it had nothing to do with his WWE exit.

“When I returned to WWE, they treated me well. I have nothing bad to say. Triple H always treated me well. Everyone received me well,” Andrade said (translated).

He continued to say that the couple’s problems began when Flair was out injured.

“And then she got injured. After that we started having some problems, and then the divorce came.”

“A lot of people ask whether she had anything to do with me leaving WWE. It had nothing to do with that, nothing at all. Not that she talked to the company or said ‘fire him’ or anything like that.”

“I respect her. She was an incredible woman. She was a great wife. I wish her the best.”

“I admit it, as a person and as a man, I was the one who failed in the relationship. I can’t speak badly about her. She’s an incredible woman and I wish her the best.”

Earlier this month, Andrade said in another interview that original plans following WWE’s purchase of AAA would have seen him compete in a four-way match against El Hijo del Vikingo, Rey Fenix, and Oba Femi on the first Worlds Collide show in Los Angeles this summer. However, in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer reported that the match Andrade referenced was not something the company was seriously considering.

Meltzer wrote:

“When we asked, we were told that the match Andrade talked about was never considered or talked about. I mean, you can’t necessarily take Andrade at his word, of course, but he was actually specific and perhaps it was broached to him by one person without the key people knowing. But, we can confirm it was never a serious thought.”

Andrade’s comments about his divorce from Flair and WWE departure begin around the 48:30 mark of the video below (cued):

Andrade reveals original AAA Worlds Collide plans before WWE release

Andrade addressed what the original plans were for him at the first Worlds Collide during a recent interview.

Dave Meltzer noted around the time of Andrade’s WWE release that there had been talk that WWE wanted him involved with AAA. Andrade has now clarified that he was originally slated for a four-way match against El Hijo del Vikingo, Rey Fenix, and Oba Femi, but plans changed when he was placed in the men’s Money in the Bank ladder match at WWE’s PLE later that same day.

Andrade said during an interview with Eduardo Bates (translated):

“The thing is that I was going to be on a AAA show. They told me that the match was going to be Vikingo, Fenix, Oba Femi and me. It was going to be a four way at the first event.”

He continued:

“Later everything changed because that same night was Money in the Bank. I went into Money in the Bank and that event no longer included me, so I never went back to AAA. After that, Dominik went in. They had talked about the idea that Dominik would be the face on the rudo side in AAA or something like that, and they had ideas about the Mega Championship and everything.”

In the days following Andrade’s release on September 13, reports suggested he had “ghosted” the company leading up to his departure. However, during the interview with Bates, Andrade said he never stopped answering WWE’s calls.

Andrade said in the interview (translated):

“I do not feel bad about my departure from WWE. I am very thankful for everything I did, whether it was a lot or a little, during that year and a half. I never missed any dates and I never stopped answering my phone, despite what some gossiping people who spread that news said.

Andrade added that there was one occasion where he was on a day trip and temporarily unreachable, but that he returned the company’s call shortly afterward.

Andrade continued:

I was traveling when they called me. What happened was that I had a day trip because I was not scheduled, and they contacted me. I returned the call an hour or two later, but it had nothing to do with me refusing to answer or disappearing. It was one, two, maybe three hours where I did not pick up, and all that happened was the company messaging me asking, ‘Where are you?’ and things like that.

He said his delayed response was due to being out of the country, limited signal, and other factors.

Andrade’s full interview with Eduardo Bates is available below. The section where he discusses original plans for the first Worlds Collide begins at approximately 1:28:07. His comments on not having “ghosted” WWE begin at approximately 6:30.
