AEW’s Andrade sent home following backstage fight with Sammy Guevara

A situation that got heated on social media this week became physical Wednesday as AEW’s Sammy Guevara and Andrade El Idolo got into a backstage fight at Dynamite in Washington, DC.

TMZ first reported the news. From their report:

“Sources tell us words were exchanged, and then things turned physical. Sammy allegedly pushed Andrade, and punches were thrown, according to our sources. It’s unclear if anyone was hit.”

There are conflicting stories as to who started the fight. The TMZ side aligns with Andrade’s side while sources within AEW dispute that Guevara started it.

Andrade was set to face Ten on Friday’s live Rampage in an AEW career vs. mask match, but Tony Khan announced shortly before Dynamite that the match was off.

As of now, Guevara is still set to team with Chris Jericho against Daniel Garcia and Bryan Danielson tonight.

This is the second such incident Guevara has got in recently as he and Eddie Kingston had a confrontation following language used in an unseen promo regarding Kingston’s weight. Kingston was suspended for two weeks following their altercation.

Andrade did an interview Monday where he said Guevara is the only wrestler he has ever had a problem with, stemming from an alleged confrontation the two had after a match where Guevara accused him of being too stiff.

The two then engaged in a war of words on Twitter with Andrade tweeting he would see Guevara Wednesday and would “tell it to your face again.”

AEW has yet to publicly comment.

Andrade El Idolo vs. 10 off AEW Rampage

The planned match between Andrade El Idolo and 10 of the Dark Order for this Friday’s live episode of Rampage is off.

Tony Khan announced Wednesday afternoon that a new Trios title match will be taking its place instead.

“Friday’s bout @Pres10Vance vs @AndradeElIdolo is off,” Khan wrote. We’ll still celebrate the anniversary of @ThisBrodieLee’s final match at #AEWRampage as 10 will get the shot he missed at All Out: World Trios Championship, Death Triangle vs Dark Order. See you tonight for #AEWDynamite on TBS.”

The match between the two had been made last week. The stipulations were that if Andrade won, he would get 10’s mask. However, if 10 won, Andrade would have to leave AEW.

Andrade recently got into an argument over social media with Sammy Guevara following a Spanish-language interview where he said the only person he ever had problems with in AEW was Guevara over comments Guevara made about Andrade hitting him too hard.

The new Trios Championship match between Death Triangle and The Dark Order is the only match announced for Rampage, which will air live Friday night. An episode of Battle of The Belts will air immediately following Rampage.

AEW’s Sammy Guevara, Andrade El Idolo engage in social media war of words

In what is either an elaborate work toward a future storyline or another real-life backstage issue that has come to light, AEW’s Sammy Guevara and Andrade El Idolo took to Twitter Tuesday to engage in a social media war of words.

The issues appear to have started with a Spanish language interview Andrade did Monday where he mentioned that the only wrestler he has ever had a problem is Guevara. Andrade claimed that Guevara complained he hit him both too hard and too frequently in an unspecified match. Andrade said he told Guevara that it was just wrestling and if he hit Guevara too hard, he should do the same to him. He said he talked to Guevara without any physical altercation and asked if there was a problem to which Guevara said there wasn’t.

The two have shared a ring three times in AEW this year: a February singles match, a March three-way with Darby Allin, and a six-man tornado match at March’s Revolution. It’s unknown which specific match Guevara is alleged to have complained about.

On Monday night, Guevara tweeted the following which is assumed to be toward Andrade:

On Tuesday morning, Andrade tweeted this toward Guevara in response:

Guevara then retorted, denying an altercation took place and taking shots at Andrade for supposedly wanting to return to WWE:

Andrade then said he will see Guevara Wednesday and teased another confrontation:

Further adding to this confusion as to the legitimacy of all this is Andrade’s on-screen companion (Jose The Assistant) confirming Andrade’s account of things:

However, Andrade and Guevara are not currently in any storyline together, nor has there been the tease of one recently.

Andrade will put his AEW career on the line on Friday’s live Rampage against the mask of Dark Order’s 10 while Guevara will team with ROH Champion Chris Jericho against Bryan Danielson and ROH Pure Champion Daniel Garcia on Wednesday’s Dynamite.

Andrade vs. 10 AEW career vs. mask match set for next Rampage

As social media speculates on his potential unhappiness with AEW, Andrade El Idolo will put his AEW career on the line against 10’s mask next Friday on a live edition of Rampage.

Andrade has been trying to recruit 10 to his group for several weeks, but the Dark Order member has relented. In a backstage promo on Friday’s show, he issued the challenge to 10 who accepted before adding the stipulation for Andrade.

Speculation began as Andrade has been using the hashtag #FreeElIdolo on Twitter the past few days. He retweeted a fan who shared a tweet about him not wrestling Wednesday despite some wrestlers needing to miss the show due to Hurricane Ian.

He also retweeted a fan who took a shot at AEW about a since-deleted picture AEW shared celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month that he and Thunder Rosa weren’t in.

This will be Andrade’s first singles match since a late-June win over Rey Fenix on Rampage while this is 10’s first singles bout since March. It’s expected a match he had during the July AEW Dark tapings will air next week.

It’s the only match announced for next Friday’s live show from Washington, DC.

Ric Flair wins last match against Jay Lethal & Jeff Jarrett

Ric Flair emerged victorious in what was billed as his final wrestling match Sunday evening in Nashville, Tennessee.

Flair, 73, teamed with son-in-law Andrade El Idolo to defeat Jeff Jarrett and Jay Lethal. The finish had Conrad Thompson, Flair’s other son-in-law, throw brass knuckles to Andrade, who gave them to Flair. Flair then used them to strike Jarrett and put Jarrett in the figure four leglock as referee David Miller ran in and counted to three, giving Flair and Andrade the win.

After the match, confetti fell as Flair celebrated with Andrade and his family at ringside. He met with several people sitting in the front row including The Undertaker, Mick Foley, and Bret Hart. He thanked the fans and Nashville for being one of the greatest wrestling cities in the world. He then said that “everything you heard about him is true” and was going to celebrate with Kid Rock tonight. The show ended with Flair holding the NWA World Heavyweight title belt that he held during the mid-to-late 1980s in Jim Crockett Promotions.

Flair’s previous retirement took place in 2008, when he lost to Shawn Micheals at WrestleMania 24. Despite retiring, Flair returned to wrestling the following year and wrestled through 2011, with his most recent match being a loss to Sting on an episode of Impact Wrestling.

Ric Flair to team with Andrade against Jeff Jarrett & Jay Lethal in ‘Last Match’

Ric Flair’s “last match” has finally been revealed.

Flair will team with his son-in-law Andrade El Idolo for the first time ever as the two take on Jeff Jarrett & Jay Lethal in a tag team match at Jim Crockett Promotions Presents: Ric Flair’s Last Match. The pay-per-view is being held at the Nashville Municipal Auditorium on Sunday, July 31 and will air live on Fite TV.

The announcement of the match was made on episode two of the Ric Flair’s Last Match docuseries.

The Last Match event will be the first time the 73-year-old Flair has wrestled since 2011. Flair has been training in the ring with Lethal leading into the show.

There was an angle on Flair’s podcast last month where it was claimed that Lethal no-showed appearing on the podcast. Flair said Lethal was upset with him because Flair wouldn’t let him be part of the Last Match event.

That angle continued on the Last Match docuseries when Lethal attacked Flair following the press conference for Jim Crockett Promotions Presents: Ric Flair’s Last Match. After Flair was rude to him when he tried to help, Jarrett joined in on the attack and helped bloody Flair.

Jarrett will also have a role at WWE SummerSlam in Nashville on Saturday, July 30, serving as the special guest referee for The Usos vs. The Street Profits for the Undisputed WWE Tag Team titles.

Jim Crockett Promotions Presents: Ric Flair’s Last Match is taking place as part of Starrcast V. Here’s the updated card for the show:

  • Ric Flair & Andrade El Idolo vs. Jeff Jarrett & Jay Lethal (w/ Karen Jarrett)
  • Impact World Champion Josh Alexander defends against Jacob Fatu
  • Impact Knockouts Champion Jordynne Grace defends against Deonna Purrazzo and Rachael Ellering in a three-way match
  • Ricky & Kerry Morton (w/ Robert Gibson) vs. Brian Pillman Jr. & Brock Anderson (w/ Arn Anderson).
  • Rey Fenix vs. Laredo Kid vs. Taurus vs. Bandido
  • The Wolves (Davey Richards & Eddie Edwards) vs. Motor City Machine Guns (Alex Shelley & Chris Sabin)
  • Killer Kross (w/ Scarlett Bordeaux) vs. Davey Boy Smith Jr.
  • Clark Connors vs. Ren Narita
  • The Von Erichs (Marshall & Ross Von Erich) vs. The Briscoes (Jay & Mark Briscoe)

AEW’s Andrade El Idolo out with ankle inflammation

AEW’s Andrade El Idolo is currently out of action due to ankle inflammation.

On Friday afternoon, AEW head Tony Khan answered a fan’s question on Twitter about why Andrade hasn’t been appearing in the ring more often.

Khan said Andrade was hurt in his singles match against Rey Fenix on the Friday, June 24th Rampage.

Andrade took to Twitter Friday night to put fans at ease, saying he would be out a week or two and that the injury was nothing serious.

He later replied to another news outlet’s story about the injury, adding the detail about the inflammation.

Andrade missed some time in April and May due to his recent marriage to Charlotte Flair of WWE. He competed in the early-June Casino Battle Royale, followed by a Dark: Elevation match against Kazarian and the aforementioned Fenix match.

On past editions of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer has noted that AEW wants to do Andrade & Rush vs. Lucha Brothers but have been unable to due to injuries on both sides.

Andrade was present on Friday’s Rampage, backing up Private Party as they took on Rey Fenix & Penta Oscuro. Rush got involved in the match, interfering and accidentally leading to Private Party’s loss.

Andrade El Idolo vs. Rey Fenix set for AEW Rampage

Andrade El Idolo vs. Rey Fenix, plus three additional bouts have been announced for Friday’s AEW Rampage episode.

The match against Fenix will be Andrade’s first singles bout on Dynamite or Rampage since losing a coffin match to Darby Allin in April. He did appear in the Casino Battle Royale on the June 8 Dynamite, then defeated Frankie Kazarian on Dark: Elevation in a match that aired this week.

Also announced for Rampage, United Empire’s Jeff Cobb will face FTR’s Cash Wheeler. Both will take part in a triple threat match for both the ROH and IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team titles as Forbidden Door, with United Empire facing FTR and Roppongi Vice.

Hook vs. The DKC from NJPW’s LA Dojo, plus Serena Deeb and Mercedes Martinez tagging against unnamed opponents are the other matches set for Friday’s show, which is being taped tonight.

The Rampage lineup:

AEW Rampge, Friday, June 24 —

  • Andrade El Idolo vs. Rey Fenix
  • Jeff Cobb vs. Cash Wheeler
  • Hook vs. The DKC
  • Serena Deeb & Mercedes Martinez vs. TBA

AEW’s Andrade El Idolo says he was set to face Will Ospreay at Forbidden Door

AEW’s Andrade El Idolo says he was supposed to face Will Ospreay at Forbidden Door, but the match was changed for political reasons.

Appearing on Hugo Savinovich’s Lucha Libre Online interview show, Andrade said that he was set to fly to Japan to shoot the angle for the match with Ospreay, but that plans changed. Credit to LuchaBlog for the translation:

The change is a result of  the complicated political situation involving NJPW’s alliance with CMLL, as AEW has a working relationship with Mexico’s AAA promotion. Andrade worked one match for AAA in 2021, and one match so far this year, last appearing at Triplemania in Monterrey on April 30.

In the interview with Savinovich, Andrade also expressed frustration with AAA, as he says that they have not booked him as they said they would, leading to a situation where he cannot work for NJPW due to the NJPW-CMLL relationship. Andrade says that he was scheduled for this weekend’s AAA Triplemania show, then that booking was canceled.

Andrade’s full interview with Savinovich can be seen below.

Andrade, Lucha Bros not appearing at AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door

Due to the partnership between NJPW and CMLL, AAA contracted wrestlers Andrade El Idolo, Penta Oscuro and Rey Fenix will not appear at this month’s AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door pay-per-view.

LuchaBlog first reported the news Monday, saying Andrade was booked at one point and then removed from the show. Bryan Alvarez noted that with Penta and Fenix, it’s been known they wouldn’t be able to work the show “for a long time.”

AAA and CMLL are rival promotions in Mexico. Luchablog insinuated on Twitter that it was CMLL who forced NJPW’s hand:

Earlier Monday, Andrade tweeted the following:

https://twitter.com/AndradeElIdolo/status/1536220228291645443

As of this writing, neither Fenix nor Penta have tweeted anything about the situation

LuchaBlog also noted that there are apparently issues between Andrade and AAA over a canceled booking that wasn’t communicated properly that cost him an opportunity (and money) to work somewhere else. Andrade deleted a tweet replying to Konnan who tweeted the following:

At this point, the issue won’t affect FTR who are the current AAA Tag Team Champions. The creative direction appears to be a three-way with Roppongi Vice and new IWGP Tag Team Champions Great-O-Khan and Jeff Cobb at the Sunday, June 26th PPV. The AAA titles haven’t been mentioned in the buildup.

Rush on per-appearance deal with AEW

Rush has not signed a full-time contract with AEW.

The 33-year-old debuted for the promotion at Double or Nothing in a segment with Andrade El Idolo, reuniting the Los Ingobernables stablemates. They had both been original members of the faction when it formed in 2014.

During a recent interview with Lucha Libre Online, Rush revealed that he is currently on a per appearance deal with AEW. The two sides are still in negotiations, however.

“I am grateful to Tony Khan for giving me the opportunity,” Rush said. “We are still under talks and negotiations. For now, there are just dates (not a full-time contract). I already did the first jump (step), which is being in the PPV, and not just a segment, but they gave it the value that both Rush and Andrade have. They left that promo for the end. Nobody expected it, not even my own family.”

Rush continued to talk about who in AEW he’s most interested in wrestling.

“For now, my objective is AEW,” he continued. “I am now in AEW and I want to face the biggest names. I want everything! I am not going for the minimum. You name it! CM Punk, Bryan Danielson, (Jon) Moxley, Samoa Joe, the best they have (to offer).”

“Imagine Rush vs Samoa Joe. There’s a lot of material. Bryan Danielson vs Toro Blanco Rush, two ex ROH World Champions against each other. There’s Moxley, which they state is the most extreme one. They need to see a real Mexican badass. A lot of people have requested this match… Rush vs. Kenny Omega. We can finally have that match.”

WWE’s Charlotte Flair, AEW’s Andrade El Idolo get married

WWE’s Charlotte Flair and AEW’s Andrade El Idolo were married Friday in a ceremony in Mexico.

Photos and videos from the ceremony and reception began appearing on social media on Friday evening, including the above photo of the couple with Rey Mysterio and his wife Angie.

Charlotte’s father, WWE Hall of Famer Ric Flair, was also in attendance for the ceremony.

Flair was written out of WWE storylines earlier this month, dropping the SmackDown Women’s Championship to Ronda Rousey at the WrestleMania Backlash event. In storyline, Flair suffered a broken arm after being put in an armbar through a chair by Rousey.

Flair, 36, and Andrade, 32, got together in 2019 when both worked for WWE. They announced their engagement in a social media post on January 1, 2020.

Andrade was released by WWE in March 2021, and debuted for AEW in June 2021. His most recent AEW appearance came on the April 20 Dynamite, losing a coffin match to Darby Allin. He then appeared in a trios match at AAA Triplemania XXX: Monterrey on April 30.

Charlotte Flair & Andrade El Idolo getting married this summer

SmackDown Women’s Champion Charlotte Flair and AEW star Andrade El Idolo are set to tie the knot later this year.

In an interview with Ariel Helwani ahead of WrestleMania 38, Charlotte (real name Ashley Fliehr) revealed that she and Andrade (Manuel Alfonso Andrade Oropeza) are getting married this summer. Their wedding will be taking place in Mexico.

“We have a date,” Charlotte said. “It’s this summer, in Mexico. I have my dress.”

When asked if she’s going to be taking time off from WWE for the wedding, Charlotte said coyly: “Who knows?”

Charlotte and Andrade got engaged on New Year’s at the start of 2020.

At WrestleMania 38 night one this Saturday, Charlotte will be in one of the top matches on the card as she defends her SmackDown Women’s Championship against Ronda Rousey.

After being granted his release from WWE in March 2021, Andrade debuted for AEW last June. He defeated Darby Allin in the main event of this week’s episode of Dynamite.

Charlotte’s full interview with Helwani is available to watch below:

Darby Allin vs. Andrade El Idolo announced for AEW Dynamite

Two matches have been announced for next week’s Dynamite.

Darby Allin will face Andrade el Idolo in a singles match. Meanwhile, FTR will face The Gunn Club in tag team action.

Idolo has been trying to recruit Darby Allin in recent months to be part of his Andrade Family Office, but Allin has shown zero interest. On tonight’s Dynamite, Allin teamed up with The Hardys and Sting to defeat AFO’s The Butcher, The Blade, and Private Party in a Texas tornado match where all eight men fought around the HEB Center in Cedar Park, Texas.

The Gunn Club were in the front row during tonight’s opening match that saw CM Punk defeat Dax Harwood. In a backstage promo, Cash said that the Gunn Club needed to earn respect. Dax said he couldn’t stand spoiled brats like them and would see them on next week’s show.

Next week’s AEW Dynamite will take place at the Colonial Life Arena in Columbia, South Carolina.
