First women’s Owen Hart tournament semi-finalist crowned at AEW Double or Nothing

Athena has qualified for the semi-final of the 2026 AEW Owen Hart tournament.

AEW Double or Nothing 2026 officially kicked off the Women’s Owen Hart tournament. The women’s opening round began with ROH Women’s World Champion Athena taking on Mina Shirakawa.

In the third match of the night, Athena defeated Shirakawa in a closely fought match and crowned herself the winner.

Throughout the match, Shirakawa tried to inflict damage on Athena’s legs, but unfortunately for Shirakawa, the champion stood through it all. Toward the closing moments of the match, Athena executed the O-Face on Shirakawa and secured the pinfall.

With her win tonight, Athena has booked her spot in the semi-final of the tournament. The date for Athena’s semi-final match has yet to be announced.

The other matches for the tournament will see Alex Windsor against a wild-card opponent, Sareee against Skye Blue, and Hazuki against Persephone. Although the dates for these matches have not been confirmed yet.

On Wednesday’s AEW Dynamite, the full bracket for the women’s Owen Hart Foundation tournament was revealed with several surprises including debuting Japanese stars Sareee and Hazuki in addition to reigning CMLL Women’s Champion Persephone.

However, with Sareee saying Thursday that she was taking a month off for “neck maintenance” and Persephone out of action to the point she had to be pulled from Friday’s ROH Supercard of Honor, it raised questions as to both woman’s health for the tournament that begins next weekend.

AEW head Tony Khan was asked about their status during the Supercard of Honor media call Thursday and said that both are expected to wrestle in the tournament as planned. However, he said their quarterfinal matches will likely take place in June as opposed to right away, noting that the finals of the eight-woman tournament aren’t until late-June at Forbidden Door.

Our Bryan Alvarez reported Thursday after the call that as of Wednesday night, all women in the tournament were expected to compete.

Sareee is scheduled to face Skye Blue while Persephone is slated to go one-on-one with the aforementioned Hazuki of Stardom on the left side. Both matches are on opposite sides of the bracket. Persephone last wrestled on the April 22 Collision in a tag team match after which she was sidelined indefinitely. She was tabbed for the first-ever women’s Survival of the Fittest match at Supercard of Honor before being pulled.

Men’s Owen Hart tournament bracket revealed, two high profile bouts set for AEW Double or Nothing

The eight man bracket for the men’s Owen Hart Foundation tournament were revealed on AEW Dynamite Wednesday with two very high profile matches set for next weekend’s Double or Nothing.

One of those is the first time ever match of Will Ospreay vs. Samoa Joe. Ospreay has had a bumpy road returning from neck surgery, but picked up a win over Ace Austin Wednesday in his first match since aligning with the Death Riders. Joe recently returned from a concussion with a late-April win.

The winner of that match will advance to face the winner of Jack Perry vs. Mark Davis which doesn’t have a date attached yet. Davis defeated Perry for the National title last Saturday at Fairway to Hell to ignite their feud.

The opposite side of the bracket will see Swerve Strickland vs. Bandido in a match that has been teased for several weeks. It’s Strickland’s first match since losing to Kenny Omega in mid-April and his first match against Bandido in AEW.

The winner of that match faces the winner of Brody King vs. Claudio Castagnoli in their third-ever singles match. King picked up a win in the 2023 Continental Classic while Castagnoli got revenge in the 2024 Classic.

The finals will take place at Forbidden Door on Sunday, June 28 in San Jose, California, with the winner presumably earning a future AEW World title shot at August’s All In.
