FIGURE FOUR WEEKLY: Figure Four Weekly 7/24/2017: Battleground brings Smackdown to lowest point since brand split

Only days after the one-year anniversary of WWE’s most recent attempt at a brand split, SmackDown hit its lowest point since last summer with Battleground. It wouldn’t be much of an issue if this were an outlier. Bad pay-per-views are bound to happen and there will always be excuses for them. Stipulations marred things at Battleground, dragging down both John Cena vs. Rusev and the main event.

WRESTLING OBSERVER NEWSLETTER: July 31, 2017 Wrestling Observer Newsletter: Status of rights fees, WWE Battleground review, more

What in many ways is the biggest business news story in sports, the changes in television and future of huge rights fees, in looking at UFC’s opening up negotiations for its 2019 TV deal, is the lead story in the current issue, because it also is the first in a new era of declining cable and perhaps money coming from other places, and will probably indicate how WWE’s negotiations go a year later.

The new issue is a double issue including a feature on the first MMA events ever held in the U.S. that have been forgotten over time, and what pro wrestling star was part of the catalyst for the organizers in coming up with the idea.

Look at what is being said publicly vs. privately regarding what UFC is hoping for out of its new deal, the aspect of timing, what it means to the overall value of UFC as well as WWE going forward, the value of UFC to FS 1 and FS 2, how Fight Pass fits in, the future of PPV for UFC, where ESPN stands and other networks and interest levels.

This issue updates the G-1 Climax tournament, including a look at how the style has changed over three years, the tournament quality, the good and the bad of the business and physical demands, who is killing it, standings, schedule and a look at all the key matches.

WON BACK ISSUE: July 10, 2000 Wrestling Observer Newsletter: WWF signs Brock Lesnar, future of ECW, more

With the WWF television situation being straightened out, now all eyes are on the future of ECW, both as far as national television and the company’s survival itself. ECW was officially canceled, as expected, by TNN effective with the show airing on 9/22. This date appears to preclude any chance of USA Network having ECW ready to go on the air the Monday after WWF leaves (which is believed to be the first week of September, although nobody has been able to confirm an official date), in an attempt to have a wrestling show ready to keep at least a small part of the huge audience that by habit tunes to USA in that time slot.

Pete Dunne to defend WWE UK title at PROGRESS NYC

With the status of WWE’s plans in the United Kingdom still undefined, Pete Dunne hasn’t had a ton of opportunities to defend his UK Championship since winning it at TakeOver: Chicago.

His first defenses came at NXT’s house shows at Download Festival in June, then he defeated Trent Seven, Wolfgang, and BT Gunn to retain the title in ICW last Saturday. Next, he’ll be putting it on the line when PROGRESS Wrestling comes to New York later this month.

PROGRESS announced yesterday that Jack Gallagher would return to the promotion to challenge Dunne for the WWE UK title at their show in New York on August 12th. It will be the second time that the championship has been defended in PROGRESS, with Tyler Bate having previously retained against Mark Andrews over WrestleMania 33 weekend in Orlando.

WWE also posted a story about the Dunne vs. Gallagher UK title match on their website.

Like with the UK plans, WWE has yet to officially reveal any updates about PROGRESS and ICW events being shown on the Network, but Dunne’s title defenses are proof that the relationship between the companies remains strong.

PROGRESS NYC will take place at Elmcor Youth and Adult Activities in Corona, New York, which will also host an EVOLVE show earlier in the day. PROGRESS will then be in the Boston area for a doubleheader with Beyond Wrestling on August 13th.

WWE Raw video highlights: Lesnar raises the stakes ahead of SummerSlam

WWE played into rumors of Brock Lesnar potentially returning to the UFC on Raw last night, with Paul Heyman raising the stakes of the SummerSlam main event by saying that Lesnar would leave WWE if he loses the Universal Championship at the pay-per-view.

Heyman said that he would leave if Lesnar loses as well, claiming that WWE is trying to get Kurt Angle to make Lesnar lose the title. But Heyman concluded his promo by promising that Lesnar would be announced as still being the champion at the end of SummerSlam.

Also on Raw, Lesnar’s next challengers faced off in a triple threat match, Big Show took on Big Cass in the main event, and Dean Ambrose still refused to trust Seth Rollins.

John Cena to star in Transformers spinoff ‘Bumblebee’

John Cena has booked his next movie role, and it appears to be his biggest yet.

The Hollywood Reporter revealed today that Cena would be playing a lead role in “Bumblebee.” The film is a spinoff of the Transformers franchise and will be directed by Travis Knight, with Cena starring alongside actress Hailee Steinfeld.

Cena wrote about the news on Twitter: “One of the most exciting projects I’ve been fortunate to be a part of. Thrilled to join the #Transformers franchise!” Details of his role haven’t been announced yet.

In the Hollywood Reporter article, it’s noted that Paramount Studios hopes that “Bumblebee” will be the first in more prequels and offshoots of the Transformers series. The film will be set in 1987 and the plot is described as: “Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small California beach town. Charlie (Steinfeld), on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary yellow VW bug.”

Production started today and the film is scheduled to be released on December 21st, 2018.

How this will affect Cena’s WWE schedule isn’t known, though he’s advertised for both SummerSlam in August and No Mercy in September. He’ll face Shinsuke Nakamura in a number one contender’s match on SmackDown tomorrow to decide who will challenge for Jinder Mahal’s WWE Championship at SummerSlam.

UPDATE: Kenny Omega scheduled for ROH Global Wars: Chicago

UPDATE: While Omega will be wrestling at the event, ROH issued a correction on Tuesday morning saying that the title defense isn’t confirmed: “It was announced in error that Kenny Omega would be defending the IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship. However, at this time, there is no confirmation on the US title being defended on October 15th.”

**********

Kenny Omega’s first announced defense of the IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship is officially set.

Ring of Honor revealed today that they’ve added a stop in the Chicago area to their Global Wars tour, which is in collaboration with New Japan Pro Wrestling, on October 15th. Along with that, they noted that Omega would be defending his title on the show. His opponent will be revealed in the coming weeks.

The Global Wars: Chicago show will take place at the Odeum Expo Center in Villa Park, Illinois. It will be ROH’s debut at the venue.

Omega became the inaugural IWGP US Champion at NJPW’s shows in Long Beach, California earlier this month. He defeated Michael Elgin, Jay Lethal, and Tomohiro Ishii in tournament matches to win the title.

NJPW chairman Naoki Sugabayashi said before the weekend in Long Beach that they would want the title to be defended on future NJPW events in the US and in ROH.

The Global Wars tour also includes stops in Buffalo, New York on October 12th, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on the 13th, and Columbus, Ohio on the 14th. ROH hasn’t clarified whether Omega will only be working the Chicago show or not.

Jon Jones calls out Brock Lesnar after UFC 214 win

The hype for a potential Jon Jones vs. Brock Lesnar superfight isn’t stopping any time soon.

After defeating Daniel Cormier at UFC 214 on Saturday night, Jones took some of his post-fight interview time to challenge the WWE Universal Champion. “Brock Lesnar,” Jones said. “If you want to know what it feels like to get your ass kicked by a guy who weighs 40 pounds less than you, meet me in the Octagon.”

Lesnar then responded to Jones calling him out. “Be careful what you wish for, young man,” he said in an interview with the Associated Press.

Speculation about Jones vs. Lesnar began as soon as rumors started to surface about Lesnar making a UFC return, with both fighters then confirming that they were interested in the matchup. Lesnar told Jones to focus on Cormier then, but Jones’ win would seem to inch the dream fight closer to reality.

One of the hurdles that remains is that Lesnar is currently under a one-year suspension for drug test failures surrounding his UFC 200 fight against Mark Hunt. That suspension was frozen when Lesnar “retired” from MMA in February, and the clock would only start counting down again if Lesnar enters himself back into the USADA drug testing pool.

The UFC’s Jeff Novitzky denied that Lesnar had officially entered back into the pool on July 19th. It’s not clear whether he would be eligible to return by the UFC’s last show of 2017 on December 30th or if a return would have to wait until 2018 if he decides to come back.

Another possible hurdle is Lesnar’s WWE contract. WWE would have to approve Lesnar fighting again while under a deal with them, but the three-year contract that he signed in 2015 is up after next year’s WrestleMania.

Jones reclaimed the light heavyweight title by knocking out Cormier in the third round on Saturday night. A fight against Lesnar would require Jones to at least temporarily move up to heavyweight.

While those are only some of the barriers that could prevent Lesnar vs. Jones from happening, a fight that once seemed to be an impossibility will be one of the things that everyone is talking about coming out of UFC 214.

Daily Update: Triple H’s birthday, G1 continues, Cormier vs. Jones

WON BACK ISSUE: July 3, 2000 Wrestling Observer Newsletter: WWF wins lawsuit to go to Viacom, King of the Ring review, more

Delaware Chancery Court Judge William Chandler ruled in favor of the World Wrestling Federation and Viacom on 6/27 in the lawsuit filed by the USA Network, which will result, officially, in September, for all WWF cable programming moving to Viacom stations TNN and MTV. Chandler ruled against USA Network’s claim that their right of first refusal in the contract, which expires in September, only pertains to the four wrestling shows on the network and not to an overall marketing deal between Viacom and the WWFE as a company.

ESPN’s Ric Flair 30 for 30 gets its premiere date

The edition of 30 for 30 that ESPN has been producing on Ric Flair finally has its air date.

ESPN announced today that “Nature Boy,” a documentary on Flair’s life and career in pro wrestling, will premiere on Tuesday, November 7th at 10 p.m. ET. The project is directed by Rory Karpf and has been in the works since 2015.

Triple H, Hulk Hogan, Ricky Steamboat, Baby Doll, Tully Blanchard, The Undertaker, Arn Anderson, Shawn Michaels, Sting, and Road Warrior Animal are listed as being interviewed for the 30 for 30, along with Flair’s first wife, his children, and others close to him.

“I grew up a huge wrestling fan in the 1980s and I was captivated by Ric Flair,” Karpf said. “It’s been a personally rewarding experience to tell the story of arguably the greatest wrestler of all time. Ric’s story transcends the wrestling business, and my hope is that it will appeal to wrestling and non-wrestling fans alike.”

Karpf has previously directed editions of 30 for 30 that were focused on basketball player Christian Laettner (and the dislike that some fans had for him) and race car driver Tim Richmond. John Dahl, an executive producer for 30 for 30, noted that Karpf’s interview with Flair for the Laettner documentary convinced them that he would be a fascinating subject to feature.

The 30 for 30 on Flair won’t be the first to focus on a subject related to pro wrestling, with “This Was the XFL” having been released earlier this year. A 30 for 30 short about the Von Erich family also came out in 2015.

The trailer for “Nature Boy” is available to watch below:

WOOOOOO!!! It’s official… Our #30for30, #NatureBoy, on @RicFlairNatrBoy will debut November 7th on ESPN.

WWE SmackDown video highlights: Owens vs. Styles vs. Jericho

As SmackDown moved on from Battleground and began building to SummerSlam, the United States Championship was again on the line on last night’s episode of SmackDown.

Kevin Owens opened the show before being interrupted by AJ Styles, but he wasn’t the only one who wanted another shot at Owens’ title. The returning Chris Jericho then entered and set his sights on Owens as well, which led to Shane McMahon announcing a triple threat match for the main event.

Elsewhere on SmackDown, Shinsuke Nakamura took on Baron Corbin, John Cena answered Jinder Mahal’s request for a new challenger before Daniel Bryan made a big number one contender’s match for next week, and The Usos continued their feud with The New Day by attacking the new champions.

WWE announces John Cena vs. Shinsuke Nakamura for next week

WWE has announced a big number one contender’s match for next week.

John Cena will face Shinsuke Nakamura on next Tuesday’s episode of SmackDown, with the winner going on to challenge Jinder Mahal for the WWE Championship at SummerSlam. Daniel Bryan made the match on tonight’s show after Nakamura defeated Baron Corbin and Cena interrupted Mahal while he was demanding a new opponent.

This will be the first time that Cena and Nakamura have ever wrestled each other. They previously teamed together in a dark match against Corbin & Rusev earlier this month.

If Nakamura wins, it will be the first time that he’s challenged for the WWE title since being called up to the main roster in April. Cena would be going for his 17th World title reign, which would break what WWE recognizes Ric Flair’s record to be.

Cena vs. Nakamura is the second big match already announced for WWE TV next week. Roman Reigns vs. Samoa Joe vs. Braun Strowman in a triple threat match is also advertised for Raw on Monday.

They made stops in Los Angeles, Toronto, Brooklyn, and London in an attempt to get the hype for their boxing match seen in as many relevant media markets as possible.

Alexa Bliss vs. Bayley added to WWE SummerSlam card

After the fatal four-way for the Universal Championship was announced for SummerSlam earlier in the show, another match was later confirmed for the pay-per-view on tonight’s episode of Raw.

Bayley defeated Sasha Banks in a number one contender’s match to earn a shot at Alexa Bliss’ Raw Women’s Championship at SummerSlam. The finish came when Banks hit a frog splash and was going for the pin, but Bayley reversed it to get the three count.

There are now three matches officially set for SummerSlam on August 20th. Naomi will defend her SmackDown Women’s Championship against Natalya, and Brock Lesnar will put his Universal title up for grabs in a fatal four-way match against Braun Strowman, Samoa Joe, and Roman Reigns.

Universal title fatal four-way set for WWE SummerSlam

Brock Lesnar will officially be defending his Universal Championship in a fatal four-way match at SummerSlam.

After Braun Strowman interfered and left last week’s number one contender’s main event without a winner, Kurt Angle announced on tonight’s episode of Raw that Strowman, Samoa Joe, and Roman Reigns would all be challenging for Lesnar’s title at the pay-per-view.

Angle opened the show and went to reveal Lesnar’s SummerSlam opponent before being interrupted by Strowman. All three made their case to Angle, with him making the fatal four-way match official. The segment then broke down into a brawl as the locker room came out to stop it, but Strowman ended up laying out Reigns to stand tall.

Lesnar vs. Strowman vs. Joe vs. Reigns is the second match officially confirmed for SummerSlam. Naomi will also be defending her SmackDown Women’s Championship against Natalya at the show, which takes place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York on August 20th.
