October 15, 2018 Observer Newsletter: Highs and lows of UFC 229, plus tons of news

The craziest week in UFC history saw the most lucrative show they’ve ever done, one of the best cards, the complete lack of discipline come to roost, a number of new and changed matches that only made it clear once again that titles are a joke.

From a mainstream standpoint, UFC 229, which took place 10/6 at the T Mobil Arena in Las Vegas, was the most talked about show in company history with the exception of when Ronda Rousey lost to Holly Holm.

This was twice as big on PPV, and nearly as big to the public. With 10.5 million google searches regarding the show, the second biggest in history (to the Rouse vs. Holm match which did 11.7 million), it blew past Hurricane Michael, was five times that of the Boston Red Sox, ten times that of the WWE’s Australia show, and landed big numbers for McGregor (7 million), Khabib Nurmagomedov, Derrick Lewis, Michelle Waterson, Ovince Saint Preux and Anthony Pettis.

Going into Super Show-Down in Melbourne, Australia on Saturday, it wasn’t entirely clear whether it would be more of a major stadium show or a glorified live event.

There were elements of both on display at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Without even factoring in entrances or the post-match angle, Triple H vs. The Undertaker was nearly 30 minutes long. It was obvious that they were attempting to deliver on the epic “last-time ever” main event that had been promised. It was a bit of a mess at times. Undertaker isn’t capable of having that kind of match at this point in his career. And if Triple H is at all capable of it, The Undertaker isn’t the type of opponent he can show that against.

Despite that, the match was what the crowd came to see. A no disqualification stipulation was added right before the main event started, with the storyline being that Triple H was able to use his position of authority to gain an advantage.

HBK, Kane to corner HHH and Undertaker at WWE Super Show-Down

WWE has revealed Shawn Michaels’ role for Super Show-Down in Melbourne, Australia.

As was advertised in advance, The Undertaker made an appearance on Raw tonight to continue promoting his match against Triple H at Super Show-Down. During his promo, it was announced that Michaels will be in Triple H’s corner for the match and that Kane will be in Undertaker’s corner.

Michaels was on Raw two weeks ago as part of the build to Triple H vs. Undertaker, and WWE teased Michaels potentially coming out of retirement for his first match in over eight years. Dave Meltzer then reported that Michaels wrestling was “targeted, if not scheduled” for WWE’s return to Saudi Arabia on November 2. Meltzer wrote that it wasn’t planned to be a singles match.

Kane (real name Glenn Jacobs) hasn’t appeared on WWE television since winning his election to become mayor of Knox County, Tennessee last month. He’s noted that he wouldn’t rule out still making special appearances for WWE after becoming mayor.

Undertaker vs. Triple H at Super Show-Down is being billed as the final time they’ll ever face each other. The event will take place at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on October 6 and will air live on the WWE Network.

Two more matches added to WWE Super Show-Down card

Two more matches have been added to the card for WWE Super Show-Down.

WWE has announced Asuka & Naomi vs. Peyton Royce & Billie Kay for Super Show-Down, along with The New Day defending their Tag Team titles against Cesaro & Sheamus. The event is taking place in Melbourne, Australia on October 6 and will air live on the WWE Network.

Asuka made the save for Naomi in an angle on this week’s SmackDown, helping her even the odds against Royce & Kay. Naomi had defeated Royce before being attacked by them.

Super Show-Down will be a homecoming for Royce & Kay as they wrestle in their home country. Buddy Murphy will also be challenging for the Cruiserweight Championship in his hometown of Melbourne.

New Day vs. Cesaro & Sheamus could also be the SmackDown Tag Team Championship match at Hell in a Cell on September 16, with Cesaro & Sheamus facing Rusev & Aiden English in a number one contender’s match next Tuesday.

The updated lineup for Super Show-Down is listed below:

  • The Undertaker vs. Triple H (billed as the final time they’ll ever face each other)

WWE announced tonight that Cruiserweight Champion Cedric Alexander will defend his title against Murphy at Super Show-Down in Melbourne, Australia on October 6. Alexander last defended the title against Drew Gulak on the SummerSlam pre-show, and their program has continued on 205 Live since.

Murphy wrestled in the main event of this week’s 205 Live, defeating Kalisto.

This is the seventh match to be announced for Super Show-Down. The show is taking place at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and will air live on the WWE Network.

Bryan vs. Miz for title shot, tag match announced for Super Show-Down

After the build to the pay-per-view began on television this week, WWE has made a few more announcements for Super Show-Down.

Daniel Bryan and The Miz will be facing each other at the October 6 PPV in Melbourne, Australia, with the winner getting a future shot at the WWE Championship. WWE also announced tonight that Bryan & Brie Bella vs. Miz & Maryse in a mixed tag match is set for Hell in a Cell on September 16.

Miz defeated Bryan at SummerSlam after Maryse gave him brass knuckles to use as a weapon.

John Cena vs. Kevin Owens was originally scheduled for Super Show-Down, but that’s been changed. Cena will instead team with Bobby Lashley against Owens & Elias.

WWE is also hyping that The Shield will be in action at Super Show-Down in some form after reuniting on Raw this week. Whether they’ll be in a six-man tag or separate matches wasn’t confirmed.

Triple H appeared on Monday’s Raw to hype up Super Show-Down, which will take place at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and air live on the WWE Network. Triple H is facing The Undertaker at the show in what’s being billed as the final time they’ll ever wrestle each other.

WWE confirms Australia PPV, Triple H vs. Undertaker set

WWE’s planned Network special in Australia, which was even briefly mentioned on television earlier this year, has now been announced.

It was confirmed this morning that “WWE Super Show-Down” would officially be taking place at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Melbourne, Australia on Saturday, October 6th. Following WrestleMania 34 and the Greatest Royal Rumble, this will be WWE’s third stadium show of the year.

The first match for the show has also been announced, with Triple H set to face The Undertaker for the first time since WrestleMania 28. It’s being promoted as the final time they’ll wrestle each other.

John Cena, Ronda Rousey, Shane McMahon, Big Show, Kurt Angle, and Shawn Michaels are among those listed for the show. Though Michaels has discussed potentially being open to one more match under the right circumstances, it wasn’t specified whether he would just be making an appearance or not.

Seth Rollins, Roman Reigns, Randy Orton, Nia Jax, AJ Styles, Charlotte Flair, Daniel Bryan (whose contract expires on September 1st), The Miz, Sasha Banks, Alexa Bliss, Bray Wyatt, and Peyton Royce & Billie Kay are also advertised, along with more wrestlers from Raw and SmackDown.

Super Show-Down will stream live on the WWE Network at 4 a.m. Eastern time that Saturday and will be available on pay-per-view globally. It’s taking place three weeks after Hell in a Cell and two weeks before TLC.
