Finals set for NJPW Super Junior Tag League

The finals are set for the 2023 Super Junior Tag League. 

The round-robin portion of the tournament concluded with a three-way tie atop the group after Thursday’s show in Osaka. Catch 2/2, El Desperado & Master Wato, and SHO & Yoshinobu Kanemaru all finished with 12 points. 

Catch 2/2 advance to Saturday’s finals on tie-breakers as they defeated both SHO & Kanemaru and Wato & Desperado in the round-robin.

Kanemaru & SHO also advanced as they defeated Wato & Desperado in the main event of Thursday’s show. 

Despite going into Thursday as the only team that controlled their own destiny, Master Wato & El Desperado are eliminated on tie-breakers despite a 6-3 record.

NJPW World Tag League & Super Junior Tag League winners crowned

NJPW crowned the winners of the 2022 World Tag & Super Junior Tag League tournaments on Wednesday in Sendai. 

Lio Rush & YOH defeated Bullet Club’s Ace Austin & Chris Bey in the finals to win the 2022 Super Junior Tag League. This was YOH’s third Super Junior Tag League victory. His Roppongi 3K team with Sho won the tournament in 2018 and 2019 as well. Roppongi 3K also won the Super Junior Tag Tournament (single-elimination) in 2016. 

Bishamon (Hirooki Goto & YOSHI-HASHI) defeated Aussie Open (Kyle Fletcher & Mark Davis) in the finals to win the World Tag League for a second year in a row. Goto has now won the tournament four times (two-times w/ YOSHI-HASHI, one-time with Katsuyori Shibata, and one-time with Karl Anderson). He currently sits one back of both Keiji Mutoh and Antonio Inoki, who have each won the tournament five times with different partners. 

Lio Rush & YOH will now face TJP & Francesco Akira for the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championships at Wrestle Kingdom 17. Bishamon advance to challenge FTR for the IWGP Tag Team Championships on the show as well. 

NJPW World & Super Junior Tag League night six results

Both the World Tag and Super Junior Tag League tournaments were featured on NJPW’s show from Aichi on Sunday. 

The November 27 event was the sixth show on the tour. It was the fourth night to feature the Super Junior Tag League and the third to feature the World Tag League.

NJPW announces teams for World & Super Junior Tag league

New Japan Pro Wrestling has revealed the teams for both the World Tag league and the Super Junior Tag league. 

The tournaments will run concurrently beginning on Monday, November 21, and concluding with the finals on Wednesday, December 14.

The winners of each tournament will challenge the champions of their respective divisions in the Tokyo Dome at Wrestle Kingdom 17 on January 4, 2023. 

NJPW to hold World Tag League & Super Junior Tag League at same time

NJPW is set to hold its World Tag League and Super Junior Tag League tournaments at the same time this year.

NJPW has announced that a combined World Tag League and Super Junior Tag League tour will begin at Korakuen Hall in Tokyo on Monday, November 21. The tour will conclude at Sendai Sun Plaza Hall in Miyagi on Wednesday, December 14.

The tour will consist of 17 shows in total.

World Tag League will feature heavyweight tag teams, while Super Junior Tag League will feature junior heavyweight teams. NJPW has yet to confirm the participants for either tournament.

Both tournaments will likely determine title challengers for Wrestle Kingdom 17, which will be a one-night event taking place on January 4, 2023. FTR (Dax Harwood & Cash Wheeler) are the current IWGP Tag Team Champions. United Empire’s TJP & Francesco Akira currently hold the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team titles.

Last year’s World Tag League tournament was held in conjunction with the Best of the Super Juniors. Super Junior Tag League 2021 took place in the summer.
