Mercedes Mone wants to see Shane McMahon join AEW

Mercedes Mone would like to see Shane McMahon join AEW.

Rumors that Shane could be AEW-bound have persisted for months, even before he met with Tony Khan in July. Shane also had a chance meeting with Mone at the airport this summer and was on the same flight as The Young Bucks last week.

After seeing Shane in Netflix’s “Mr. McMahon” docuseries, Mone believes Shane has unfinished business in the pro wrestling industry. She would be in favor of him coming to AEW.

“The portion where I think many of us were trying to figure out was Vince’s relationship with Shane. It seemed like a generational cycle, watching Vince’s relationship with his own father. I could see a young man in Shane who just wanted to make his Dad proud, as Vince seemed to be with his own father. To see Shane’s passion for that, as well as his passion for wrestling, moved me,” the TBS Champion wrote in this week’s Mone Mag.

“Seeing Shane’s incredible heart and passion for wrestling makes me think he has a lot of unfinished business. It also makes me think is Shane coming to AEW? I’m here for it, and I’m sure our roster is too. Regardless, it just seems like Shane belongs in the wrestling business. I admit if he doesn’t come back to wrestling, it will make me sad for him. I know what it’s like to be removed from what you love and how sad it made me. I imagine he feels the same way.”

Mone noted that she was excited to watch the Netflix series but ended up being a little disappointed by it.

“On to the big white elephant in the room, as in the big Vince McMahon Netflix documentary, as I said last week, I couldn’t wait to watch. Watching all six episodes, honestly, I was a little disappointed and didn’t feel like there was too much new for me,” Mone wrote.

“I’ll say this, as I watched, I couldn’t believe that I got to work for Vince, what a crazy genius he is, and how he really elevated wrestling to a whole stratosphere. He created a universe fans have enjoyed for decades and still do. He made wrestling larger than life. He did it all, and he tried it all. And he failed so many times, too. Where the business is at today is all because of him and his ideas. And that’s what I really liked it.”

The “Mr. McMahon” series debuted on September 25. It covers Vince McMahon’s tenure leading WWE through his resignation from the company this January in the wake of Janel Grant’s lawsuit.

The Young Bucks post Shane McMahon airport photo: ‘Interesting flight today’

On their way home from AEW Grand Slam in New York City, The Young Bucks ran into an interesting name from the pro wrestling industry.

Matt & Nick Jackson posted a photo of themselves with Shane McMahon at the airport on Thursday morning, captioning it with “Interesting flight today.” The photo comes amid persisting rumors that McMahon could end up joining AEW. He met with Tony Khan this July to discuss possibilities for the future.

After that meeting with Khan, McMahon issued a statement saying they discussed “many things,” but mostly their shared love of the pro wrestling business and the rewards and challenges of working with family. McMahon called it a “great meeting.”

Khan said he “really enjoyed” talking with McMahon.

A chance meeting between McMahon and AEW star Mercedes Mone also happened at LaGuardia Airport in New York City in July.

At Dynamite Grand Slam last night, The Young Bucks retained their AEW Tag Team titles with a victory over Will Ospreay & Kyle Fletcher. The annual Grand Slam event is held at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Queens.

Tony Khan ‘really enjoyed’ Shane McMahon meeting: He is a ‘very smart person about wrestling’

Tony Khan commented on his meeting with Shane McMahon during a recent interview with ESPN Radio.

A photo of McMahon and Khan in a meeting room leaked online last week with Fightful and Wrestletalk reporting the two had met to discuss “possibilities moving forward.”

The AEW president was asked about McMahon while appearing on Sedano & Kap on Tuesday.

“Well, as I understand, he’s not doing anything with WWE, and I had a really nice visit with him,” Khan said on the show. “I had heard from a lot of people that he was interested in talking and it had become, frankly, a big media story to the point where I was getting asked on the record questions about it and I answered them, and just like I’ll answer you now.”

“I had never met him in advance of my first conversation with him. There was a lot of buzz about this so I thought it would certainly be worth talking and I have a lot of respect for him. I had never met him but he seemed like a really nice guy. I sat down with him, he was fantastic. I really enjoyed talking to him and he is a very smart person about wrestling and I thought he was a great guy and we have a lot of mutual friends and we both happened to be in Dallas.”

Khan also noted that it was a mutual friend who put them in contact.

“A mutual friend linked us up, who is one of the bigger names in pro wrestling, and that friend put us on a group chat. We were both in the same town at the same time.”

Khan then stated the picture that leaked online was taken by someone who just “busted it in and took a photo.”

“Somebody, in the middle of talking at an airport conference room, somebody just busted in, I guess, and took a photo but I think that’s fine.”

“There is nothing wrong with a couple of people getting together and talking about wrestling. I think that’s part of what makes wrestling so great is there is a lot to talk about and we’re all fans at heart.”

Khan’s full appearance on the show is available below:

Bryan Danielson ‘100 percent’ open to working with Shane McMahon in AEW

Bryan Danielson would be open to working with Shane McMahon again if Shane ends up coming to AEW.

When WWE brought back its brand split in 2016, Danielson and Shane were paired together as authority figures on SmackDown. They even teamed up at WrestleMania 34 in a victory over Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn. With Shane recently meeting with AEW boss Tony Khan, the possibility now exists that Danielson and Shane will work together again.

Gorilla Position asked Danielson about that possibility in an interview that was published on Tuesday.

“I mean, I’m open to working with anybody,” Danielson responded. “I don’t have beef with anybody. So, yeah, 100 percent.”

Danielson said he doesn’t have any inside information about what’s going on between AEW and Shane. If he did, Danielson wouldn’t disclose it publicly anyway.

“It was interesting because Tony [Khan] mentioned to me after the photo had come out, he said, ‘Oh yeah, I didn’t want to tell you this before but I met with Shane McMahon.’ I didn’t say this but I was like, ‘Yeah, I know. The picture was everywhere.’ [laughs],” Danielson said. “Although, to be fair, I’m not aware of a lot of things because I don’t go on Twitter and I don’t go on social media and all that kind of stuff.”

The meeting between Shane and Khan took place in Arlington, Texas last week. Shane issued a statement calling it a “great” meeting. Shane said he and Khan “talked about many things, but mostly about [their] shared love for the business and the rewards and challenges of working with family.”

Danielson is challenging Swerve Strickland for the AEW World Championship at All In on Sunday, August 25. If Danielson doesn’t win, he will retire from in-ring competition. Danielson also contributes to AEW behind the scenes.

Jim Ross reacts to Tony Khan-Shane McMahon meeting

Jim Ross thinks Shane McMahon would be a positive addition to AEW.

Earlier this week, news broke that Tony Khan and Shane had met together in Arlington, Texas. It was reported that the meeting was to discuss possibilities moving forward. Shane later issued a statement confirming the “great” meeting. In his statement, Shane said he and Khan spoke about many things, but mostly about their “shared love for the [pro wrestling] business and the rewards and challenges of working with family.”

A photo of the meeting was published by WrestleTalk. On his Grilling JR podcast, Ross reacted to seeing the picture for the first time and discussed what he thinks Shane could bring to AEW if he were to join the promotion.

“That’s pretty cool, actually,” Ross said. “Shane, he could add a lot. He could do some physical things, within reason. He has great name identity. People know who he is. You don’t have to stop and explain, ‘Well now, this is Vince McMahon’s son. This is Stephanie McMahon’s brother. This is Linda McMahon’s son.’ All that stuff goes without saying. But if Tony [Khan’s] an entrepreneur, and if he thought that Shane could help us in AEW, and if Shane thought he could have some fun, make a couple of paydays — I’m sure Shane is not in need of a significant cash influx — but [if] he wants to have fun and contribute. Look, the wrestling business is in Shane’s blood. Where else does he go if he wants to stay in that vocation? Where else does he go?”

The 72-year-old Ross said he’s a fan of Shane’s. They’ve known each other since Shane was in high school. Ross doesn’t have any inside info that Shane is AEW-bound, but he believes Shane would be an entertaining television character.

“I think he could help us in a lot of ways, strategically,” Ross noted. “As a TV character, obviously the main thing. So we’ll just have to wait and see how that works out. I don’t have any outstanding hope or any inside info that he’s the guy, but he might be a new addition at some point in time. And if so, between both their creative abilities, it would be entertaining.”

Shane potentially joining AEW has been a talking point online since Ross and Conrad Thompson first discussed the hypothetical idea on Grilling JR several weeks ago.

Ross, the “Hall of Fame Voice of Wrestling,” has been with AEW since 2019. This March, Ross announced that he had signed a new one-year contract with AEW. His role is contributing on commentary at AEW pay-per-view events.
