Updates on future of WWE Tribute to the Troops & NXT Level Up

A WWE tradition that goes back more than two decades has officially been put into mothballs for the time being.

The company’s annual Tribute to the Troops specials are no longer, according to Dave Meltzer from the latest Wrestling Observer Radio. There was no formal announcement from the company, but a WWE source confirmed the news to Meltzer.

As noted by Meltzer, the show was a Vince McMahon and John Bradshaw Layfield-created tradition and one that started in December 2003 as the company brought a WWE show to Baghdad, Iraq, and aired it on Christmas as an episode of SmackDown.

It remained an overseas tradition through 2009 and then became a stateside occurrence at various military bases. It eventually was filmed at arenas and became standalone specials that aired on both NBC and Fox at various junctures.

There were 21 editions through 2023 with just one — 2019 — not airing on TV.

That follows the news that initially broke last week by Fightful and Bodyslam.net that NXT Level Up is also not moving forward. Its final episodes were filmed during last Thursday’s NXT TV tapings and will be replaced by the impending LFG reality-esque show that will debut on A&E in early-2025.

The successor to the shuttered 205 Live, Level Up debuted in February 2022 on Friday nights, designed to focus on mainly inexperienced NXT wrestlers who hadn’t yet made it to the main TV show. It aired on both Peacock and WWE Network with this Friday’s finale completing a 150-episode run.

Kelani Jordan to make WWE NXT debut on Level Up

Former Michigan State gymnast Lea Mitchell will make her WWE NXT debut as Kelani Jordan this week.

While Jordan took part in a Halloween-themed battle royal at an NXT live event last October, her first match on WWE programming was filmed on Tuesday from the Performance Center. She wrestled Wendy Choo in a match that will air Friday on NXT Level Up.

Jordan also previously appeared on NXT programming as one of Grayson Waller’s “Waller Girls” at NXT Vengeance Day in February.

Jordan was signed to WWE after taking part in the company’s tryouts over SummerSlam weekend in Nashville last year. She was one of the 14 out of 50 who attended the tryouts to be signed.

She has a long list of athletic and scholarly accolades from MSU. These include:

  • 23 career event victories
  • Named CoSIDA Academic All-American in 2022.
  • Recipient of the 2021 Big Ten Conference Wayne Duke Postgraduate Award – the first female MSU student-athlete to receive the honor.
  • Five-time WCGA Scholastic All-America honoree

Karl Fredericks gets new WWE name, will debut on NXT Level Up

Former NJPW wrestler Karl Fredericks is set to make his WWE television debut on NXT Level Up.

Now going by the name “Eddy Thorpe,” Fredericks will take on Dante Chen on the NXT Level Up episode that airs this Friday. The show airs on Peacock/WWE Network at 10 p.m. Eastern time.

“Thorpe is an intriguing newcomer who has competed all over the world and has a chance to turn heads if he can defeat his fellow veteran, Chen,” WWE.com wrote. “Chen is 6-3 in his last nine matches on NXT Level Up, having most recently picked up a hard-earned win against Kale Dixon.”

Fredericks departed NJPW in August 2022. After being spotted at the WWE Performance Center last September, he officially started with WWE last month.

Fredericks made his first WWE appearance at an NXT house show on January 20.

Fredericks using “Thorpe” as his last name in NXT appears to be a tribute to legendary Native American athlete Jim Thorpe. Fredericks is also Native American.

The full card for this week’s Level Up is listed below:

  • Ivy Nile vs. Valentina Feroz
  • Eddy Thorpe vs. Dante Chen
  • Oba Femi vs. Xyon Quinn

WWE NXT Level Up results: Axiom vs. Scrypts

This week’s WWE NXT Level Up was taped before Tuesday’s NXT. Byron Saxton introduced newcomer Blake Howard as his new broadcast partner to kick things off.

Tank Ledger defeated Kale Dixon

Ledger took control of Dixon’s arm to start, lifting him in the air in a show of strength. Dixon escaped with an overhand chop, but Ledger caught him on the run and dropped him with a World’s Strongest Slam for a near fall. The two got tied up in the corner and Dixon took control by running Ledger into the buckle, latter dropping Ledger with a neckbreaker for a near fall.

Ledger fought out of a chinlock before getting the better of a strike exchange. Ledger ran wild with two-handed chops before hitting a big bodyslam. Ledger hit the cartwheel splash for a near fall and followed that up with the Oklahoma Stampede for the three count.

– Kelly Kincaid interviewed Axiom, who was wearing a snazzy tan turtleneck. Luchadores in street clothes are always a great look. He called out Damon Kemp for jumping him on NXT last week and says that he will beat Scrypts tonight despite Scrypts’ advantage as a masked man — funny because Axiom also wears a mask.

Lash Legend defeated Dani Palmer

Legend drove Palmer into the corner to start. Palmer almost turned a biel into a sunset flip, but Legend stuffed it. Palmer got thrown off of a headlock but was able to bait Legend into the corner for a headscissors. Legend reversed an Irish whip attempt, sending Palmer into the corner and dropping her with a wheelbarrow back suplex.

Legend picked Palmer up by the hair and slammed her to the mat for a near fall. Legend pummeled Palmer in the corner with a series of clotheslines before dropping Palmer face-first on the apron. Legend followed that up with a leg drop to the back of the head. Palmer ducked a corner charge and peppered Legend with offense, taking her to a knee with an enzuigiri. Palmer hit a Destino-type move for a near fall, but Legend caught Palmer with an interesting facebuster move for the win.

Axiom defeated Scrypts

I don’t mean to pick on Scrypts, but putting him across the ring from Axiom just showed how low rent his gear looks. After a stalemate to start, Axiom scored the first big shot with a single-leg dropkick. Scrypts went to the apron, but got his springboard attempt cut off with another big kick.

Axiom went for a big dive, but no one moved Scrypts’ entrance trampoline, so Scrypts used it to jump over the ropes and kick Axiom down. That doesn’t seem fair, but I’m not a referee.

Scrypts hit a corkscrew crossbody for two before slapping on a headlock. Axiom fought back, chopping Scrypts’ vest open before hitting a running dropkick. Axiom landed a top-rope crossbody for a near fall. Axiom brought Scrypts to the top rope, but Scrypts knocked him down before hitting an impressive high-arching moonsault press for a nearfall. Axiom came back with a northern lights suplex and a penalty kick for a nearfall.

Scrypts went for the corkscrew crossbody again, but Axiom just punched him in the face. Scrypts stuffed an O’Connor roll attempt and superkicked Axiom on the rebound. Scrypts went for the big moonsault again, but was met by a superkick from Axiom before the Golden Ratio scored Axiom the win.

WWE hires new commentator for NXT Level Up

WWE has hired a new commentator.

As first reported by Fightful, Blake Chadwick has been signed to the promotion. He has changed his name to Blake Howard on social media, indicating this will likely be the name he goes by in WWE.

Howard has done commentary for numerous independent promotions including Coastal Championship Wrestling, Combat Fights Unlimited, and Only Stars Pro Wrestling.

He made his WWE debut on Tuesday at the NXT Level Up tapings from the Performance Center. Howard is expected to join Byron Saxton on the show’s commentary team moving forward. Prior to Howard’s arrival, NXT commentator Vic Joseph worked with Saxton on the show.

WWE NXT Level Up airs Fridays at 10 p.m. Eastern time on Peacock and the WWE Network. The show debuted on February 8, 2022, replacing 205 Live. The lineup for this week’s episode is below:

  • Tank Ledger vs. Kale Dixon
  • Lash Legend vs. Dani Palmer
  • Axiom vs. Scrypts

WWE NXT Level Up results: Josh Briggs & Brooks Jensen vs. Bronco Nima & Xyon Quinn

This week’s NXT Level Up was filmed prior to Tuesday’s live NXT. I’m going to guess the action in Saturday’s Vengeance Day will be much better than this.

Sol Ruca defeated Lash Legend

Ruca had quite the week, taking to social media to explain her inclusion in a Black History Month image NXT released. The match was competitive early with both unable to get the upper hand even after Ruca outsmarted Legend on a criss-cross spot.

Ruca locked on an STP that had Legend scrambling for the ropes. The submission hold followed incredibly slow rope running by Legend. Another rope run led to a big boot to Ruca’s midsection that shifted things in her favor.

Legend continued to use her power to keep control including the dreaded rest hold standing armor. Ruca eventually rallied after landing an electric chair, countering a Legend big boot with a super kick and the incredibly impressive Sol Snatcher for the pin and her fourth straight win on TV. Legend now has 11 straight TV losses dating back to late-May 2022.

This was a struggle to get through.

– Kelly Kincaid was backstage with Josh Briggs, Brooks Jensen, Kiana James and Fallon Henley. Jensen was distracted looking at a phone with James and Briggs was concerned about his level of focus, asking the ladies to stay backstage and come up with a tag team name (“Business Casual which they seemed to like”).

Javier Bernal defeated Oba Femi

The commentary team pointed out that Femi has the true big body as opposed to “Big Body Javy.” They then talked about Christmas albums. Femi press slammed Bernal during the match to really drive home the point — about the body, not the music.

This was nothing to write home about. Bernal got the advantage, Femi regained it and then Bernal raked his eyes as the referee was blocked, getting a roll-up with a handful of trunks to get the win, snapping a streak of five losses.

Josh Briggs & Brooks Jensen defeated Bronco Nima & Xyon Quinn

The former WWE NXT UK Tag Team Champions were rolling early until Jensen got distracted by Nima and was taken out by Quinn.

The heels grew more confident as the match rolled on, using their strength to keep Jensen on the defensive. Briggs got the hot tag and ran wild, laying out Nima and Quinn. Shortly after, Jensen recovered and hit their double team version of the Hart Attack (a big boot as opposed to a clothesline) for the win to snap a two-match losing skid.

WWE NXT Level Up results: Scrypts vs. Oro Mensah, Lola Vice debuts

Last week’s WWE NXT Level Up was taped before Tuesday’s NXT with Vic Joseph and Byron Saxton on the call.

Dante Chen defeated Kale Dixon

Dixon got greeted with a “We want broccoli” chant. After some grappling to open, Dixon took control by bringing Chen down over his knee by the hair. Dixon sent Chen into the buckle before dropping him with a side suplex for two. Dixon went for another one but Chen reversed it into a cover for a near fall.

Dixon locked Chen in a bodyscissors as the announcers bantered about Raw 30. Chen stood up and dropped Dixon to the mat, followed by an offensive flurry before dropping Dixon with a back suplex. Chen hit the big double chop for the win.

– Kelly Kincaid interviewed Lola Vice backstage. She cut a paint by numbers NXT introduction promo. My name is X. My gimmick is Y. Bad dialogue. Catchphrase. She takes on Palmer next.

Dani Palmer defeated Lola Vice

I give this debut for Vice a thumbs up. She was going to get chances because of her look and her social media following, but she has presence and some impressive strikes. She needs more reps, but there’s a solid base there.

Vice took control with some big kicks, landing a suplex for a near fall. Palmer transitioned out of a hold into a dropkick, followed by a splash in the corner and a handspring splash. Palmer brought Vice down with a bodyslam before hitting a standing moonsault for two.

Palmer went to the top for a corkscrew maneuver, but Vice moved out of the way and hit a hurricane kick for two. Vice went for a powerbomb, but Palmer reversed it into a jackknife cover for the win.

Scrypts defeated Oro Mensah

Scrypts ain’t it. It’s a bush league gimmick on a wrestler that isn’t good enough to do half the things he’s trying. He needs to work on his fundamentals like his timing and footwork for his work to come together. And even if it did, he’d still be fighting an uphill battle with this goofy character.

Scrypts made sure the trampoline budget set aside for Sin Cara didn’t go to waste. Both men quickly evaded each other’s holds before Mensah tagged Scrypts with a kick. (I’m already annoyed because I have to undo my computer autocorrecting Scrypts to Scripts each time I write it.) Scrypts got sent flying from a Mensah headscissors before taking a Pele kick. Mensah sent Scrypts over the top rope before hitting a plancha.

Scrypts landed on his feet out of a suplex and pulled Mensah down by the hair. He hit a standing 450 whoopee cushion for a near fall. A twisting crossbody also got a two count. Mensah fought back, but Scrypts shoved him over the top rope when he tried a springboard move. Mensah came back, firing off forearms before scoring with a big lariat. He hit an inverted Pele kick and followed it with a springboard dropkick.

Scrypts rolled to the apron and hooked Mensah on the ropes. The finish here was wacky. Scrypts went for his Molly-Go-Round finish, but Mensah sat up and caught him in a roll-up. Scrypts rolled through that roll-up into his own pin and got the three which the announcers didn’t even realize was a three — a messy finish to a messy match.

Valerie Loureda making WWE NXT Level Up debut this Friday

Former Bellator MMA fighter Valerie Loureda’s first televised pro wrestling match will air this Friday night.

Loureda, who is going by the name Lola Vice in WWE/NXT, will make her NXT Level Up debut on this week’s episode. She’s facing Dani Palmer in a singles match on the show.

“Vice, an accomplished MMA fighter and NXT’s first Cuban-American Superstar, is set for a tough test in her first match when she battles Palmer,” WWE.com wrote. “A relative newcomer herself, Palmer is searching for her first career victory, despite impressive showings against the likes of Sol Ruca and Thea Hail.”

The 24-year-old Loureda is from Miami and had a 4-1 record during her Bellator career. She revealed last June that she’s signed a multi-year contract with WWE. In November, Loureda announced that Lola Vice would be her in-ring name.

Loureda made her in-ring debut at an NXT house show this past October.

NXT Level Up airs on Peacock/WWE Network at 10 p.m. Eastern time on Fridays. This week’s episode will also feature the debut of Kale Dixon (real name Caleb Balgaard), a former college baseball player for South Alabama who joined the WWE Performance Center last August.

Here’s the full lineup for this week’s Level Up:

  • Oro Mensah vs. Scrypts
  • Dante Chen vs. Kale Dixon
  • Lola Vice vs. Dani Palmer

WWE NXT Level Up results: Joe Gacy vs. Odyssey Jones

Last week’s edition of WWE NXT Level Up was taped before Tuesday’s NXT with Byron Saxton and Matt Camp on the call.

Nikkita Lyons defeated Jakara Jackson

Lyons came out with a snazzy new fur coat. The announcers talked about how these two were friends outside of the ring both getting signed out of the same tryout class. After an opening period that Lyons controlled, Jackson ducked a kick in the corner and brought Lyons down by the hair. Jackson tied Lyons up in the ropes and proceeded to hammer her with knees to the chest.

Jackson worked on Lyons’ arm for a while until Lyons pulled her up into a sidewalk slam. Lyons ran wild with some strikes before hitting her big kick and the split splash for the win.

– Backstage, Kelly Kincaid interviewed Damon Kemp. He talked with his hands a lot and said that Tank Ledger’s college athletic career didn’t scare him because he was also a high-level college athlete.

Damon Kemp defeated Tank Ledger

Kemp needs some more work, but his amateur background gives him a leg up in his development. He’s got some potential.

Kemp quickly took Ledger down to the mat, keeping control of the big man. Ledger took Kemp down with a shoulderblock and a sidewalk slam, but Kemp cut him off with a Goldust-style chop to the throat and a neckbreaker. Ledger tried to get his feet up on a corner attack, but Kemp caught his feet and spun him into another neckbreaker in the ropes.

Kemp hit an overhead belly-to-belly for a near fall. Ledger fought out of a seated abdominal stretch and ran wild for a moment, hitting a fallaway slam in the process. Kemp cut off the big cartwheel splash with his knees and then hit a backbreaker over the knee for the win.

I assume he did that to honor his trainer Roderick Strong. Then again, Kemp was the one who took him out all those months ago, so maybe it’s a Mega Man situation where he absorbed the ability to break backs effectively.

Joe Gacy (w/ Ava Raine, Jagger Reid & Rip Fowler) defeated Odyssey Jones

Well, my luck of not having to watch my least favorite act in NXT has run out. Saxton claimed that Gacy has a “seductive charisma” about him. Because when I look at Gacy, I think of the art of seduction. At least he’s not dressed like a hotel receptionist anymore. Jones, on the other hand, came out dressed like a funky chessboard.

Jones overpowered Gacy early on and took control of his arm. I caught sight of the formerly named Grizzled Young Vets on the outside and remembered when they were tearing up Europe and NXT with their simple and effective tag team work. Now, they’re weirdo heaters for a weirdo cult leader.

Jones dropped Gacy with some body slams followed by a pair of forward rolls over Gacy’s body. He went for a third, but Raine cut him off, allowing Gacy to hit a chop block and take over. Gacy hammered Jones in the back of the head with strikes for a near fall, and later clubbered Jones while talking trash.

Jones fought his way out of a headlock and dropped Gacy with a shoulder breaker and a world’s strongest slam for a near fall. Gacy countered some corner attacks before catching Jones with his handspring lariat for the win.

WWE NXT Level Up results: Duke Hudson vs. Damon Kemp

This past week’s edition of WWE NXT Level Up was taped before last Tuesday’s NXT. Sudu Shah and Byron Saxton were on the call. For anyone keeping score, Saxton proclaimed that Kevin Owens would beat Roman Reigns for the WWE undisputed Universal Championship.

Von Wagner (w/ Mr. Stone) defeated Oba Femi

Wagner powered Femi into the corner before dropping him with a shoulderblock. Femi reversed an Irish whip and threw a shoulderblock of his own, but Wagner cut him off with a short-arm lariat. He then dropped Femi with a belly-to-back suplex for a near fall.

After a few minutes of Wagner working him over, Femi ducked a charge in the corner and fired up with a flurry of offense. Wagner moved out of the way of a corner attack and hit a big boot to take Femi down. Wagner then hit an Attitude Adjustment for the win.

– Kelly Kincaid interviewed Jakara Jackson. Jackson called herself a “goal digger” and that she’s about her business. She plans on beating Isla Dawn to make her way up to NXT.

Isla Dawn defeated Jakara Jackson

Her entrance is ooky. Her movements are so kooky. Mysterious and spooky. Her name is Isla Dawn. Unfortunately for Dawn, her entrance music isn’t as snappy as the Addams Family theme.

Jackson out-wrestled Dawn to start, knocking her down with a dropkick. Dawn took control after taking out Jackson’s knee. On commentary, Shah asked Saxton when the darkness took over Dawn. How would he know?

Dawn hit a standing meteora for two. She menaced the referee, threatening to make him erupt in black goo like she did at Deadline, but Jackson rolled her up for a near fall. Jackson fought out of a hold and fired up, hitting a suplex for two. However, Dawn cut her off and hit the Final Cut for the win.

Duke Hudson (w/ Andre Chase & Thea Hail) defeated Damon Kemp

Kemp ducked a lockup to mock the Chase U student section. Hudson hit a pair of shoulderblocks before Kemp cut him off with a kitchen sink knee for two. Kemp kept control of an armlock with a fireman’s carry, but Hudson fought out and hit a bodyslam to fire the crowd up. Kemp dumped Hudson on the ropes and dropped him with a neckbreaker for another nearfall.

Kemp worked on Hudson in the corner, driving him into the turnbuckle and maneuvering his way into a German suplex for two. Hudson fought out of a chinlock with a back suplex. Hudson hulked up, peppering Kemp with shots before dropping him with a clothesline. Hudson punched Kemp, spelling out Chase U before hitting The Big Elbowski for the win.

WWE NXT Level Up results: Thea Hail vs. Sol Ruca, Tavion Heights debuts

Last week’s WWE NXT Level Up was taped before NXT on Tuesday with Sudu Shah and Byron Saxton on commentary.

Oro Mensah defeated Myles Borne

Borne used his mat skills to control Mensah early on, but Mensah picked up the pace after flipping out of a German suplex attempt. He strung some offense together, getting the crowd into it after a pop-up rana. Mensah went for a high kick in the corner, but Borne ducked it and dropkicked him off the apron.

Borne laid on Mensah with a headlock until Mensah tried to fight out. Borne dropped him with a T-bone suplex for a near fall. Borne hit another pair of suplexes for a nearfall, but Mensah fought out of a third and hit one of his own. Mensah fired up and hit a springboard moonsault before finishing Borne off with the rolling capo kick in the corner. Post-match, the two shook hands and raised each other’s arms.
