Malakai Black to miss Northeast Wrestling show ‘due to health issues’

Malakai Black has been removed from the lineup for Friday’s Northeast Wrestling show.

NEW posted to social media on Wednesday that Black was off the event “due to health issues.” He had been scheduled to face Matt Taven. The promotion has booked Jay Lethal and nZo as replacements.

“Due to health issues @malakaiblxck will not be appearing for @northeastwrestling @mvscrappers this Friday night at Eastwood Field in #nilesohio
Replacing him are @aew star @thelethaljay & @real1 fka NZO!!” NEW wrote on Instagram

After his All Out match on Sunday, Black took a bow and blew a kiss to the fans. While this did not air on the pay-per-view, many have speculated it was Black saying goodbye to AEW and its fans. Tony Khan then offered no comment on Black’s status with the company during the post-event scrum.

“I’m not sure, I can’t comment on that, though. That was for the live fans and it definitely got some people talking, so it is a thing that happened but no I can’t comment on that,” Khan said.

It has since been reported that some in AEW believe Black has been granted a conditional release from the company.

Northeast Wrestling presents Wrestling Under the Stars on Friday, September 9 from Eastwood Field in Niles, Ohio. The lineup for the show is as follows:

  • Ricky Starks, Erick Redbeard, nZo, and Jay Lethal are scheduled to appear

NEW Brass City Brawl results: Jon Moxley vs. Darby Allin

Submitted by Patrick Tobin

Headlined by Jon Moxley vs. Darby Allin, Northeast Wrestling’s Brass City Brawl took place in Waterbury, Connecticut on Friday night.

– Hale Collins defeated Chris Battle

– Inzanely Rude (RJ Rude & Zane Bernardo) defeated The Amazing Graysons (Tommy & JP Grayson) and Private Party (Isiah Kassidy & Marq Quen) in a three-way tag match

This was like a scramble match from a 15-year-old ROH show: all big moves, bigger dives, and creative double teams. The finish came when Bernardo did a top rope superplex on a Grayson, then Quen did a top-rope frankensteiner to Rude. Rude landed on top of Grayson, and while the ref counted it as a pin, Bernardo speared Quen so that Quen couldn’t break the pin.

There were multiple “All these guys” chants during the match. Rude & Bernardo seem like they could go somewhere with a little more time.

– Renee Young was introduced (WWE announcers are allowed to make outside appearances). She came to the ring and introduced Flip Gordon, who was a surprise.

Gordon did a quick promo, he and Young threw some T-shirts into the crowd, and that was that.

– The Trustfund (Jimmy Preston & Ron Zombie) defeated The Perfect Gamble (Dexter Loux & Mike Gamble)

Preston pinned Loux.

– King Brian Anthony defeated Keith Youngblood

After the match, The Boogeyman came out and ran off King Brian and his cronies.

– Joey Janela defeated Brad Hollister in a no DQ match

Hollister looks kind of like if Taz had been a foot taller. This was not a crazy match at all by Janela’s standards, but the crowd was still totally on board for it.

Janela and Hollister sat chairs across from each other and had an elbow duel. Janela hit a splash from a ladder for two. Hollister powerbombed Janela through the ladder.

The finish came when Janela did a sunset flip powerbomb from the top rope and slammed Hollister into the two chairs that had been set up across from each other.

– Penelope Ford defeated Alisha Edwards

Ford won with a diamond cutter. Just a match.

– NEW Champion JT Dunn defeated Wrecking Ball Legursky to retain his title

Dunn used to be Chris Hero’s tag partner in Death by Elbow. Legursky is probably the top babyface out of NEW’s regular roster. He’s a big guy who works hard, but probably doesn’t have the body to make it in WWE.

This was big guy vs. little guy, and it wasn’t a half-bad match. Dunn escaped a superplex attempt by going between Legursky’s legs and powerbombing him. Dunn then hit a rolling elbow in desperation and collapsed on top of him to retain.

Dunn isn’t quite as good as Hero at timing the thigh slaps to make things sound devastating, but “not quite as good as Chris Hero” is still better than most people will ever be at it.

– Jon Moxley defeated Darby Allin

This went about 20 minutes. Moxley wasn’t announced as the IWGP United States Heavyweight Champion and didn’t have the belt with him. He got a gigantic reception.

Moxley worked as the heel in the match, but you couldn’t have paid the crowd to boo him. He used his size advantage over Allin to play the bully.

Early in the match, Moxley was chopping Allin around ringside and Allin ducked, making Moxley chop the post. Throughout the match, they would go back to working Moxley’s left hand whenever Allin was making a comeback, with Moxley selling it like he had a broken finger or something.

The pacing of the match was pretty relaxed, with Allin spending a lot of it selling like he’d been killed, and Moxley soaking up the crowd. Moxley threw Allin out of the ring at one point and Allin crashed right onto the timekeeper’s table at ringside. The timekeeper and ring announcer very clearly were not expecting it.

Moxley got a table from underneath the ring and set it up in the corner. Allin caught him in a sleeper hold with a body scissors, but Moxley reversed it by running backwards into the table. The table didn’t quite break on the first try, so Allin kept the choke on and they repeated the spot. The table broke the second time.

Moxley wedged a chair into one corner, but then Allin tricked him into running head-first into it.

Moxley retrieved tape from under the ring and used it to tie Allin’s wrists behind his back. Allin then worked the match for a few minutes with his hands literally tied behind his back, including doing a tope con hilo to the outside with his hands tied up, which got maybe the biggest reaction of any single move.

Finally, Moxley caught Allin with the high-angle Dirty Deeds and pinned him.

I thought this was probably a ***1/2 match live, and I’d imagine it’d hold up the same on TV. They didn’t go for an in-ring classic — probably because they didn’t need to with how over Moxley was with the crowd.

Moxley got on the mic after the match and cut a quick promo thanking the crowd, saying that people who go to see independent wrestling in high school gyms are the luckiest fans in the world, because they get to see the wrestlers who really care. He also put over Allin and said that Allin was going to be a very big name, very soon. He posed for a little bit longer and left.

Jon Moxley vs. Pentagon Jr. set for Northeast Wrestling

Jon Moxley will be facing Pentagon Jr. for Northeast Wrestling this summer.

Northeast Wrestling has announced Moxley vs. Pentagon for their show at the Mid Hudson Civic Center in Poughkeepsie, New York on Friday, August 16. The event is being called “Prison Break.”

Moxley vs. Darby Allin is also set for Northeast Wrestling’s show in Waterbury, Connecticut on Friday, June 14, and Northeast Wrestling’s Twitter announcement lists Moxley for their events in Jackson, New Jersey on June 15, Norwich, Connecticut on August 17, and Scranton, Pennsylvania on August 18.

The former Dean Ambrose made his first appearance for AEW at the end of Double or Nothing on Saturday night. AEW has announced that Moxley has signed a full-time, multi-year deal with them, with his in-ring debut for the promotion set for Fyter Fest in Daytona Beach, Florida on June 29.

Moxley has also been revealed as the person NJPW was hyping in their “Time’s Up” video that targeted IWGP United States Heavyweight Champion Juice Robinson. Moxley will appear at the Best of the Super Juniors finals on June 5.

AEW president and CEO Tony Khan spoke about Moxley’s contract with them after Double or Nothing, noting that he’ll be able to work some international and indie dates.

Northeast Wrestling Redemption results: Kenny Omega vs. Fenix

by Nick Mahmood

Here are results from yesterday’s Northeast Wrestling Redemption show in Poughkeespie, New York.

– Hale Collins defeated Jake Manning, Keith Youngblood, Christian Casanova, Wrecking Ball Legursky and JT Dunn in a ladder match

Great opener to get the crowd going, everyone used multiple ladders & tables and there were also some pretty vicious bumps on the ladder. Good spot to showcase some of the NEW guys.

– Katie Forbes defeated Karen Q

Awful match. Q did fine, it’s not her fault. Thankfully was short.

– Jerry Lawler defeated Brian Anthony in a No DQ Match

Not much, Lawler threw punches and threw a beer and water bottle at Anthony. Anthony’s team of Daniel Evans and Anthony Battle came out and triple teamed Lawler until David Arquette ran out for a surprise appearance. He nailed a pretty good spear on Brian Anthony. Anthony Battle got hit with a fireball by Lawler. Battle got very close and the fireball really connected to his face, looked bad for him. Then Mick Foley came out and helped Lawler.

The three former world champions posed after. Arquette was super over.

– NEW Champion Brad Hollister defeated PCO

Nice match, a bit short but a nice showcase for Brad. PCO was very over, but the crowd liked Brad too. Brad kicked out off a top rope moonsault.

– Pentagon Jr. defeated Darby Allin

Pentagon Jr. won after the arm break and package piledriver. Allin was just plain nuts, did two trust falls. Penta landed a Canadian Destroyer on the ring apron. Allin was thrown into the corner and he slipped right through the top and middle and landed on the ring announcer. Reminded me a bit of the old Chris Hamrick spot. I’d recommend to go out of your way to watch this.

– RVD defeated Jack Swagger

RVD scored the win after a Five Star Frog Splash. Terrible match. A lot of stalling by Rob early on. He wasn’t playing heel, he just didn’t do anything. Swagger eventually went after him. Crowd was booing. Swagger got busted open after Rob dropkicked a chair into Swagger. They tried to win the fans back by brawling up the stage, but didn’t work.

Swagger was pissed after the match, tossing the bell table.

– Kenny Omega defeated Fenix

Omega pinned Fenix after a One Winged Angel. Obviously the best match of the night. Don’t know the exact time, but went a decent amount. Definitely worth watching. So many different sequences that just were fantastic. I didn’t think it was as good as Omega vs. Pentagon.

Kenny was on the microphone after the match and apologized for NJPW not coming to the northeast, and said he couldn’t turn down this opportunity. Mentioned there were certain people not happy with him wrestling the AAA champion. Omega just has the presence where you feel like you’re watching something special.

Kenny Omega vs. Fenix set for Northeast Wrestling show

After facing Pentagon Jr. at All In, Kenny Omega has a match booked against the other member of the Lucha Brothers.

Northeast Wrestling has announced that Omega will be facing Fenix at their show on Friday, November 9 at the Mid-Hudson Civic Center in Poughkeepsie, New York. The event is Northeast Wrestling’s 23rd anniversary show.

Prior to defeating Pentagon at All In, Omega teamed with The Young Bucks in a non-tournament six-man tag match against Pentagon, Fenix & Flamita during PWG’s Battle of Los Angeles in 2017. Fenix was in the main event of All In, teaming with Rey Mysterio & Bandido against The Young Bucks & Kota Ibushi.

This will be Omega’s debut for Northeast Wrestling. In addition to NJPW’s events, he’s wrestled in the United States at All In, ROH’s Supercard of Honor, and WrestleCon’s SuperShow this year.

Rob Van Dam, PCO, Darby Allin, JT Dunn, and Brad Hollister are also advertised for the November 9 Northeast Wrestling event. Tickets will go on sale tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. Eastern time, and meet and greets for Omega, Fenix, and RVD are on sale now.
