Matt Riddle gets name adjustment, now going by ‘Riddle’ in WWE

WWE has made an adjustment to Matt Riddle’s on-screen name.

Riddle is no longer using his first name on WWE television and will now be going by “Riddle” going forward. PWinsider reports that the decision was made by WWE earlier today. WWE.com has also been updated to reflect the change and no longer includes references to Riddle’s first name.

Riddle tweeted about the name change: “People it’s okay I’ve been called Riddle most my life, I actually prefer it and it’s my real last name #bro #stallion #RIDDLE”

After being called up to SmackDown earlier this year, Riddle switched brands in this month’s WWE Draft and is now a member of the Raw roster. He lost a Survivor Series qualifying match to Sheamus on this Monday’s episode of Raw. Riddle lost to AJ Styles on Raw the previous week, with Styles getting the win after repeated involvement from his new bodyguard Jordan Omogbehin.

Three Survivor Series qualifying matches announced for WWE Raw

Three Survivor Series qualifying matches are set for tonight’s post-Hell in a Cell edition of Raw.

WWE has announced that Jeff Hardy vs. AJ Styles, Sheamus vs. Matt Riddle, and Keith Lee vs. Elias will take place on Raw tonight. The winners will qualify for Team Raw in this year’s Survivor Series men’s elimination match.

The theme of last year’s Survivor Series pay-per-view was Raw vs. SmackDown vs. NXT. WWE has yet to announced the full details for this year’s elimination matches.

Survivor Series is taking place on Sunday, November 22. WWE has announced that they’ll be celebrating The Undertaker’s 30th anniversary at the PPV.

Appearances by new WWE Champion Randy Orton and former champion Drew McIntyre are also set for tonight’s Raw. Orton will appear on A Moment of Bliss with Alexa Bliss, while McIntyre will kick off tonight’s show. In the main event of last night’s Hell in a Cell PPV, Orton defeated McIntyre in a Hell in a Cell match to win the WWE Championship. This is Orton’s 14th reign as a WWE World Champion.

Three matches added to WWE Raw season premiere

Three matches have been added to the lineup for tonight’s season premiere edition of Raw.

Ahead of tonight’s Raw going on the air, WWE announced that The Hurt Business (MVP, United States Champion Bobby Lashley, Shelton Benjamin & Cedric Alexander) will face RETRIBUTION (Mustafa Ali, T-Bar, Mace & Slapjack) in an eight-man tag match tonight. AJ Styles vs. Matt Riddle and Kofi Kingston vs. Sheamus have also been added to the show.

Ali was revealed as the leader of RETRIBUTION on Raw two weeks ago. It had been announced that last week’s Raw would feature Ali speaking for the first time since that reveal, but the segment ended up not taking place.

Styles, Riddle, Kingston, and Sheamus all moved over to Raw in the WWE Draft after formerly being on SmackDown.

Kingston & Xavier Woods are now the Raw Tag Team Champions after swapping title belts with The Street Profits. With Kingston & Woods moving to Raw and Big E staying on SmackDown, The New Day had their farewell match on SmackDown last Friday and defeated Sheamus, Shinsuke Nakamura & Cesaro.

Tonight’s Raw is also the brand’s go-home show for Hell in a Cell and will feature the final build to WWE Champion Drew McIntyre and Randy Orton’s Hell in a Cell match.

Here’s the updated lineup for tonight’s show:

  • Keith Lee vs. Braun Strowman
  • Raw Women’s Champion Asuka defends against Lana
  • Elias concert
  • Bray Wyatt hosts a Firefly Fun House segment
  • The Hurt Business (MVP, Bobby Lashley, Shelton Benjamin & Cedric Alexander) vs. RETRIBUTION (Mustafa Ali, T-Bar, Mace & Slapjack)
  • AJ Styles vs. Matt Riddle
  • Kofi Kingston vs. Sheamus

FRIDAY NEWS UPDATE

We’ve got the second show we did with Mike Tenay up on the site today talking about the 2020 Hall of Fame voting.

In evidence in the Samantha Tavel lawsuit against WWE, Matt Riddle, Gabe Sapolsky and Evolve, there was an email sent from Drake Wuertz, who is involved with booking extras on the show, which showed Wuertz telling Tavel she was off shows on 2/5 and 3/4 of this year saying in the email “Apparently there are some past issues I wasn’t aware of with you and one of our talent that would not make for a ideal work environment.” Tavel is claiming that is proof that WWE refused to book her after she claimed she broke up with Riddle claiming she was sexually assaulted in the past. Riddle claimed he broke up with her twice and she was harassing himself and his wife after the breakup. There is a very detailed story in the current Observer detailing the case.  No doubt there will be a lot more on the case in the days to come.

According to Ariel Helwani, the UFC has offered a 1/23 date for the Conor McGregor vs. Dustin Poirier fight, but McGregor is publicly insisting the fight takes place before the end of the year, saying he’s willing to fight on 11/21 or 12/12, which are both PPV shows. Hardy & Riddle to face Miz & Morrison on WWE SmackDown

A tag team match is set for tonight’s WWE Draft night one edition of SmackDown.

WWE announced today that Jeff Hardy & Matt Riddle will team against The Miz & John Morrison on SmackDown tonight. The match started to be set up when Riddle tweeted that — with the draft coming up and him not sure where he’ll end up — he’d love to team with Hardy before he finds out. Miz & Morrison then responded to Hardy & Riddle and said they’ll defeat Hardy & Riddle tonight.

Candy Cartwright (real name Samantha Tavel) announced yesterday that she’s suing Riddle, WWE, EVOLVE, and Gabe Sapolsky for $10 million per defendant. During the #SpeakingOut movement this June, Cartwright accused Riddle of sexually assaulting her in May 2018. Cartwright’s lawyer claimed that incident was one of “a multitude of sexual assaults committed by Matt Riddle against my client, Candi Cartwright” from 2017 through January 2020.

In a statement regarding the lawsuit yesterday, WWE said they “have not been served with a lawsuit by Ms. Tavel. However, if served, we will vigorously defend ourselves and contest it.” Riddle hasn’t commented on the lawsuit but denied Cartwright’s allegations when they were made.

Three other matches have also been announced for tonight’s SmackDown. Bayley will defend her SmackDown Women’s Championship against Sasha Banks, Kevin Owens will take on “The Fiend” Bray Wyatt, and Big E will face Sheamus in a falls count anywhere match. There will also be an angle where Otis “defends himself in court” as he tries to stop Miz from taking his Money in the Bank briefcase.

October 12, 2020 Observer Newsletter: Florida reopens, Cartwright lawsuit

A reopening of Florida by Gov. Ron DeSantis will allow all sports to run events without governmental regulation, which was noted in the local news would mean full stadiums for NFL games.

Right now there doesn’t appear to be plans for the state’s NFL teams to open up full stadiums, but the state will not get in the way if they can

While not announced officially, the plan is for WrestleMania to be on March 28, 2021 at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa and then go to Los Angeles in 2022.

WWE always wanted 2022 in Los Angeles but the city wanted 2021. Given that California is going to be more cautious about events like this than Florida (a drunk driver racing at Daytona is probably more cautious than the Governor of Florida in reality), it really all makes sense.

Plus Tampa does deserve it based on the work put in to house it last year.

Candy Cartwright files lawsuit against Matt Riddle, WWE, EVOLVE

This story was updated at 10:20 PM Eastern.

Image: Anthony Vasquez / Chicago Sun-Times

Candy Cartwright is suing Matt Riddle, WWE, EVOLVE, and Gabe Sapolsky for $10 million per defendant in a sexual assault lawsuit.

In a press conference in Chicago Thursday, Cartweight (real name Samantha Tavel) and attorney John Chwarzynski of Hale & Monico discussed her side of the story that first emerged in mid-June during the #SpeakingOut movement.

While working for EVOLVE in May 2018, Cartwright said she and Riddle were in a van with three other wrestlers. After the others had fallen asleep while traveling, Riddle overtly propositioned her for sex. She refused, but said Riddle grabbed her throat and threatened her with “What if I just made you?” She said she eventually gave him oral sex to get out of the situation.

Chwarzynski said Thursday that incident was one of “a multitude of sexual assaults committed by Matt Riddle against my client, Candi Cartwright” from 2017 through January 2020. In April 2017, it alleges Riddle raped Cartwright after an EVOLVE show in Brooklyn, New York, while in a parked vehicle and that he bragged about it to Sapolsky and others. The suit says the EVOLVE co-founder “tacitly approved of this conduct” and allowed it to happen, even encouraging it.

The suit said Cartwright had bookings with both WWE and EVOLVE on January 31st, 2020, but that she refused to perform sexual acts on Riddle and had her bookings cancelled due to “issues with the talent.” That was because Riddle allegedly told WWE and EVOLVE that because Cartwright wouldn’t perform sexual acts on him, he didn’t want her working for either group and that both complied.

At the press conference, Chwarzynski said he is going to send copies of the lawsuit to both the state attorney’s office and the Summit (IL) Police Department where the incident allegedly took place as he wants them to open an investigation.

Riddle, who was called up to the WWE main roster days after the allegations went public, denied them on two occasions, the second in a video in which he admitted having an affair with Tavel but never sexually assaulted or abused her. When he first denied it, he said he and his lawyer were going to seek an injunction for cyberstalking but it’s unclear whether that happened.

As of this writing, neither Riddle or his attorney have made a public statement.

The suit was filed in the Circuit Court of Cook County, Illinois, but in a statement to WrestlingObserver.com, a representative from WWE said they “have not been served with a lawsuit by Ms. Tavel. However, if served, we will vigorously defend ourselves and contest it.” Fightful got a quote from Sapolsky that said, “News to me.”

At the press conference, Chwarzynski said, “WWE has painted a picture over the course of the years that female performers are to comply with certain rules. The WWE, since its inception, has hyper-sexualized female performers and they’ve profited from male aggression against these female performers.”

In reading through the lawsuit, there are errors, specifically that Riddle worked for WWE on/prior to May 2018 when he didn’t sign a deal until that summer. There are also some questions regarding how WWE and EVOLVE’s relationship is portrayed in the suit.

Reigns segment set for SmackDown, WWE to decide first challenger

A segment with new Universal Champion Roman Reigns is set for this Friday’s episode of SmackDown.

WWE has announced that Reigns “will address the WWE Universe this Friday on SmackDown with Paul Heyman in tow.” WWE hyped that Reigns will talk about his Universal title win and his alliance with Heyman.

The alliance between Reigns and Heyman was revealed at the end of last week’s episode of SmackDown. There was a show-long storyline where Adam Pearce had to get Bray Wyatt, Braun Strowman, and Reigns to sign the contracts for their no holds barred triple threat match at Payback. Reigns told Pearce to fix the changes they need and he’d be at Payback on Sunday. Reigns said him winning the Universal Championship wasn’t a prediction — it’s a spoiler. It was then revealed that Heyman was sitting with Reigns. Heyman told Pearce to “Believe that.”

At Payback, the story was that Reigns didn’t sign the contract for the match until after it started. After The Fiend giving Strowman a superplex collapsed the ring, Reigns’ music hit and he came to the ring with Heyman. Reigns ended up pinning Strowman to win the Universal Championship.

The Fiend was Universal Champion going into Payback. He defeated Strowman to win the title at SummerSlam, but Reigns returned after the match and attacked both of them.

This week’s SmackDown will also feature a four-way match to decide Reigns’ challenger for Clash of Champions. Big E, Matt Riddle, Baron Corbin, and Sheamus will face off to determine Reigns’ challenger for the pay-per-view. Big E defeated Sheamus and Riddle defeated Corbin in singles matches at Payback.

Clash of Champions is taking place on Sunday, September 27.

Matt Riddle vs. Baron Corbin added to WWE Payback

The card for Sunday’s Payback pay-per-view is now up to six confirmed matches.

It was announced on SmackDown tonight that Matt Riddle vs. Baron Corbin will take place at Payback this Sunday. It will be Riddle’s first PPV match since joining the SmackDown roster.

Riddle and Corbin’s feud has included Corbin offering a “King’s Ransom” to anyone who can prove that Riddle doesn’t belong on SmackDown. Riddle called out Corbin on SmackDown tonight, but Shorty G attacked Riddle from behind as Corbin was coming out to the ring. Corbin said he accepts Riddle’s challenge for a match — on behalf of Shorty G.

Riddle defeated Shorty G in their match tonight. When Corbin tried to attack him after, Riddle ducked out of the way. They fought and Riddle went for a kick, but Corbin avoided it and bailed.

Corbin later cut a promo vowing that he’ll prove at Payback that Riddle doesn’t belong in his kingdom.

Here’s the updated card for Payback:

    • Universal Champion “The Fiend” Bray Wyatt defending against Braun Strowman and Roman Reigns in a no holds barred triple threat match
    • Keith Lee vs. Randy Orton
    • Women’s Tag Team Champions Sasha Banks & Bayley defending against Shayna Baszler & Nia Jax

    • Matt Riddle vs. Baron Corbin

WWE SmackDown live results: Firefly Fun House, Riddle-Sheamus

The build to SummerSlam continues on tonight’s SmackDown.

Tonight’s show will feature Bray Wyatt hosting a new edition of the Firefly Funhouse. Last week, The Fiend attacked Alexa Bliss — who is friends with Braun Strowman — after Nikki Cross shoved her to the ground and left. Strowman’s been missing since losing the Swamp Fight to Wyatt at Extreme Rules. WWE.com is teasing Wyatt will reveal his motivations for attacking Bliss tonight.

Sonya Deville will be The Miz & John Morrison’s special correspondent on The Dirt Sheet. Deville viciously beat down Mandy Rose and cut chunks of her hair off last week. Rose was in the process of getting ready for a date with Otis when Deville attacked. Later, The Miz & Morrison mocked Rose until Heavy Machinery confronted them.

Matt Riddle takes on Sheamus tonight. Baron Corbin has placed a King’s Ransom bounty on Riddle for anyone to collect.

Plus, Corbin goes one-on-one with Jeff Hardy. Corbin interrupted Hardy last week as Hardy addressed his personal problems and winning the Bar Fight against Sheamus. Drew Gulak attempted to stand up for Hardy, but Corbin defeated him.

Our coverage begins at 8 p.m. Eastern time.

    **********

Wyatt stressed that The Fiend wants Strowman’s Universal Championship.

They recapped Cross losing to Bayley and pushing Bliss to the mat. After the match, The Fiend appeared and applied the Mandible Claw on Bliss.

    The Firefly Funhouse

Wyatt blamed Strowman for Fiend attacking Bliss. Wyat promised that “He” will be here later and with a surprise. Wyatt promised Strowman that if “He” doesn’t get want he wants, she’ll suffer.

    Matt Riddle defeated Sheamus

Riddle and Sheamus had a good hard-hitting match until the finish.

They recapped Shorty G attacking Riddle last week in an attempt to collect the King’s Ransom bounty.

Sheamus took over with a side headlock, but Riddle broke free. Sheamus regained control with a knee to the gut and slowed the pace down. Riddle reversed into an armbar then transitioned into a pin attempt.

Sheamus recovered and rocked Riddle with a sick looking powerbomb. Riddle dropped Sheamus over the top rope, but he landed on the apron. Sheamus hit a series of shots to the chest. Sheamus climbed to the top. Riddle got back to his feet and knocked Sheamus off the top to the floor with a forearm.

Shorty G was briefly in control, but Riddle took over and beat him around ringside. He rocked Shorty G with a kick against the steps.

Riddle won the match by DQ, but it didn’t seem to bother him. He was happy that he won.

Sheamus was furious at Shorty G for interfering and trying to collect the King’s Ransom. Sheamus then gave Shorty G a Brogue kick.

They treated Shorty G like a complete joke getting beat up by both the face and heel.

Michael Cole noted The Fiend will be here tonight and teased a possible confrontation with Braun Strowman.

Sheamus confronted King Corbin in the back. He was furious that Corbin sent out Shorty G to interfere in his match. Corbin didn’t back down and noted he’s busy with Jeff Hardy tonight.

    The Dirt Sheet

They recapped Sonya Deville attacking Mandy Rose last week.

Their mics stopped working, and they had other issues. They blamed Retribution, but Miz assumed they’re only on Raw.

They introduced their guest, Mandy Rose’s hair. Rose’s hair appeared on the big screen with googly eyes. They both did a weird voice pretending to be her hair. They mocked Rose and Heavey Machinery.

Miz then said it was time to speak with the real victim from last week and introduced Sonya Deville.

Deville talked about how great it felt to attack Rose and cut her hair off. She mocked Rose and has no respect left for her. Deville got upset with the fans and noted Rose’s music isn’t going to play. She’s not coming out to get her revenge.

Deville pointed out that Rose only made it to the WWE because she won some bikini contests. She was disgusted that Rose won an award for making out with Otis.

They continued to mock Rose until Heavy Machinery ran out, and a brawl broke out. The faces cleared the ring, and the heels took off.

Deville was good in this segment, but Miz and Morrison’s Rose’s hair bit went long and dragged towards the end.

They recapped Cesaro and Shinsuke Nakamura winning the SmackDown Tag Team titles when they defeated New Day in a tables match.

Cesaro (w/Shinsuke Nakamura) defeated Lince Dorado (w/Gran Metalik)

Cesaro and Dorado worked well together and had a good, fast-paced match while it lasted.

Michael Cole claimed that Cesaro and Nakamura have been acting like teenagers since winning the titles.

The lights flickered during the match. Corey Graves was concerned that Retribution came to SmackDown.

Cesaro was firmly in control, but Dorado sent Cesaro to the floor with a tilt-a-whirl head scissors. Dorado attempted a dive, but Cesaro caught him. Dorado fought back and pulled himself onto the barricade. He then hit a hurricanrana sending Cesaro into the apron.

Dorado attempted a crossbody, but Cesaro caught him and hit a backbreaker. Cesaro slowed the pace down, but Dorado fought back, and the pace picked up.

Cesaro lifted Dorado, and he stood on Cesaro’s shoulder and did a backflip onto his feet. Dorado then hit a springboard stunner for near fall. He then used a hurricanrana for another near fall.

Cesaro recovered and hit the Gotch Neutralizer for the win.

In the back, Kayla Braxton interviewed Heavy Machinery. Otis noted that Miz and Morrison could say whatever they want about him but not his girlfriend, Mandy Rose.

The Fiend made his way to the ring.

    The Fiend/Braun Strowman Promo

Back from the break, The Fiend was standing in the ring with his music playing and the red lights. He walked around the ring.

Suddenly, Alexa Bliss appeared in the ring sitting on the mat like last week. Fiend walked around the ring and crawled towards Bliss.

Fiend teased applying the Mandible Claw on Bliss again. Bliss stopped him and touched his face.

Suddenly, Universal Champion Braun Strowman appeared on the screen. He claimed he didn’t care about Bliss. He’s an evil monster, and he’ll give The Fiend whatever he wants. Strowman agreed to face The Fiend at SummerSlam.

This was a weird segment. It felt like a weak follow up to last week’s angle. Strowman not caring about Bliss seemed strange unless they’re planning some kind of trap for The Fiend. There was no explanation of how Bliss ended up in the ring during the commercial.

    Jeff Hardy defeated King Corbin

They worked a slow pace in a short match, although the finish worked into the story of the opening match.

Hardy had the early advantage, but Corbin avoided the twist of fate and hit a vicious clothesline for a near fall. Corbin beat down Hardy at ringside on the announce table.

Back from the break and the match was in progress. Corbin rocked Sheamus with a clothesline at ringside. He slammed Sheamus headfirst into the announce table.

Sheamus recovered and gave Corbin a clothesline to the floor.

Corbin slowed the pace down with a chin lock. Sheamus powered up and attempted White Noise, but Corbin slipped out and hit a clothesline.

Suddenly, Matt Riddle caused a distraction, and Sheamus hit the Brogue Kick for the win.

In the back, Bayley and Sasha Banks discussed Bayley’s match with Asuka on Raw. Bayley wished that Banks asked her first before volunteering her for the match.

An office worker approached and informed them they need to go to the ring for a conference call with Stephanie McMahon.

Kayla Braxton interviewed Big E in the back and wondered what’s next for him. He went over his history with The New Day. He’s ready to see what he can do in singles competition.

Bayley and Sasha Banks Conference Call with Stephanie McMahon

Stephanie McMahon praised Bayley and Sasha Banks for winning all the titles. Banks mentioned McMahon’s daughters and said they’re just finishing what she started. McMahon noted they found loopholes in her rulings.

Banks and Bayley tried to apologize, but she wasn’t mad. McMahon then announced a triple brand battle royal next week with the winner getting a title shot against Bayley at SummerSlam.

In the back, Kayla Braxton interviewed The Miz, John Morrison, and Sonya Deville. They mocked Otis and Heavy Machinery.

Heavy Machinery vs. The Miz & John Morrison (w/Sonya Deville)

Tucker used some mat wrestling to keep Morrison grounded. Morrison got to his feet, but Tucker avoided a kick and hit a clothesline. Otis and Tucker sandwiched Miz with a splash. Tucker then hit a senton off the apron onto the heels.

Back from the break, the heels were firmly in control as they isolated Tucker. Morrison hit a double foot stomp and running knee. Miz followed up with a DDT for a near fall.

Tucker fought back, and Otis got the hot tag. Otis ran wild on the heels and threw them around the ring. He hit the splash in the corner and followed up with the Catapiller, but Miz broke up the three count.

Tucker charged at the heels, but they moved, and he ran into the barricade. Miz then sent Otis into the steps.

Suddenly, Mandy Rose ran out with short hair and attacked Deville. Rose and Deville brawled around ringside and in the ring.

Heavy Machinery and Miz & Morrison tried to break up the brawl.

This was a fine tag team match, but there wasn’t much to it. However, Rose and Deville had a good post-match brawl.

In the back, Rose and Deville continued to argue when the lights went out.

Suddenly, Michael Cole and Corey Graves freaked out at ringside as a bunch of men and women in black masks and hoodies ran out with crowbars and baseball bats. Cole assumed they must be Retribution.

They chased off Cole, Graves, and the cameramen. They attacked a few of the fans in the audience and then flipped over the announce table.

They spray painted the ring mats, steps, and ring apron skirt.

One of the guys brought in a chainsaw and cut the ring ropes. Retribution then celebrated.

The closing angle was chaotic and similar to the Nexus attack in 2010. However, none of the SmackDown roster came out or were involved in the beat down. The angle was done well, but it felt like something was missing to make it a big deal. It depends on where the story goes from here.

Next Week: Triple Brand Battle Royal for a title shot against SmackDown Women’s Champion Bayley at SummerSlam.

WWE announces lineup for this week’s SmackDown

WWE has revealed much of the lineup for this week’s episode of SmackDown.

Two matches and two other segments have been announced for this Friday’s show. Matt Riddle will take on Sheamus, Jeff Hardy will face Baron Corbin, Bray Wyatt will host a new edition of the Firefly Fun House, and Sonya Deville will be The Miz and John Morrison’s guest on The Dirt Sheet.

Corbin has offered a King’s Ransom bounty to anyone who can take out Riddle. After losing to Hardy in their bar fight the previous week, Sheamus cut a promo last Friday where he sent a warning to the SmackDown roster. Sheamus said Hardy will self-destruct on his own and declared that he’s moving on from his feud with Hardy.

Corbin interrupted Hardy on SmackDown last week and then defeated Drew Gulak.

Last week’s SmackDown ended with an angle where The Fiend put Alexa Bliss (who is friends with Braun Strowman) in the Mandible Claw. WWE is teasing that Wyatt may reveal the motivations for that attack during tomorrow’s Firefly Fun House segment.

Deville attacked Mandy Rose backstage last week, cut some of Rose’s hair, and then attempted to shave her head until being stopped.

The Intercontinental title will be on the line on SmackDown’s go-home show for Extreme Rules.

Alexa Bliss will also host A Moment of Bliss with a mystery guest. Bliss and her tag team partner Nikki Cross lost a non-title match to Women’s Tag Team Champions Sasha Banks & Bayley last week. Cross is challenging for Bayley’s SmackDown Women’s Championship at Extreme Rules.

Our coverage begins at 8 p.m. Eastern time.

    **********

AJ Styles promised to retain his title against Matt Riddle and avenge his loss from a few weeks ago. He noted Riddle had the element of surprise but not this time.

Riddle then talked about the match as well and vowed to win the title. Daniel Bryan on Zoom noted Riddle and Styles are going to have a classic match.

Alexa Bliss promised a major surprise later on a Moment of Bliss.

The Miz and John Morrison discussed Morrison’s match with Braun Strowman later. Miz kept asking Morrison if he was scared. Miz and Morrison did some comedy that didn’t fit with the tone the previous interviews set.

Cesaro and Shinsuke Nakamura revealed they have a title match against The New Day at Extreme Rules. Cesaro takes on Big E tonight, and the winner picks the stipulation.

The New Day promised to defeat Cesaro and Nakamura. Big E guaranteed victory. The New Day than did their introduction and headed to the ring.

This was a different way to start the show and did build some anticipation for the card tonight. It was similar to the beginning of the old Saturday Night’s Main Events in the 80s, but it went a bit long. There weren’t any long in-ring promos tonight, which was a nice change.

Cesaro (w/Shinsuke Nakamura) defeated Big E (w/Kofi Kingston)

The winner’s team gets to pick the stipulation for Extreme Rules, which is either a tables match or a cage match.

Bliss made a few predictions including the Lakers will win the championship, Matt Riddle will defeat AJ Styles for the I.C. title tonight, and her friend Braun Strowman will defeat Bray Wyatt in the swamp fight.

Bliss was about to introduce her guest when Cross interrupted. Cross assumed she was the special mystery guest and went on a rant. She promised to defeat Bayley for the SmackDown Women’s title at Extreme Rules.

Bliss revealed that Cross isn’t her guest. Cross was dejected but tried to understand. Bayley and Sasha Banks interrupted and made their way to the ring.

Bayley and Banks noted they’re the architects of the women’s evolution. Bayley then predicted that she would defeat Cross, and Banks will defeat Raw Women’s Champion Asuka at Extreme Rules.

Banks mocked Bliss and Cross. Bliss said that was great but noted they didn’t let her introduce her guest.

Raw Women’s Champion Asuka’s music hit and she walked onto the ramp. Bayley and Banks freaked out and jumped Bliss and Cross in the ring. Asuka ran down for the save. Bliss grabbed the mic and demanded a referee. This was a good segment; in particular, Bayley and Banks were great.

In the back, Matt Riddle and Drew Gulak were sparring in preparation for Riddle’s match later.

Daniel Bryan discussed AJ Styles and Riddle’s match later tonight. Bryan knows what Riddle can do and thinks he has a chance to defeat Styles.

The heels isolated Cross in their corner to gain control of the match. Cross fought back and used an inside cradle for a near fall. Bayley regained control and used a chin lock to slow the pace down.

Asuka got the hot tag and ran wild on Bayley. The heels tried to double team Asuka, but she took them both down. Asuka used the hip attack to knock Bayley off the apron. The Firefly Funhouse

The opening theme began but cut out, and a cartoon swamp briefly appeared before The Eater of Worlds Bray Wyatt appeared in a real swamp. Wyatt talked about his past association with Braun Strowman. He said he created Strowman, but then he left.

After Extreme Rules, a part of Strowman will live at the swamp forever. Wyatt knows that the Strowman that he knows is still inside of him. Wyatt noted Strowman didn’t embrace the monster he wanted him to be. Instead, Wyatt has to destroy the monster he has become. This was a good Wyatt promo.

Non-title match: Universal Champion Braun Strowman defeated John Morrison (w/The Miz)

Before the match, Strowman noted he has to go home to the swamp to face his fears. He has to destroy Wyatt before he destroys him. Strowman noted he isn’t going to let Wyatt turn into The Fiend.

This was basically a squash match. Strowman completely dominated Morrison and beat him around the ring. At one point. Strowman picked up Morrison from the mat and slammed him back down. Strowman hit the running power slam for the quick win.

After the match, Strowman grabbed the mic and promised to go home. Strowman laughed and then walked off.

Hardy noted Sheamus framed him so he couldn’t compete in the I.C. title tournament. Suddenly, Sheamus hit Hardy with The Brogue Kick. Sheamus promised to defeat Hardy in the Bar Room Brawl.

Back from the break, Braxton interviewed Bayley and Sasha Banks. Braxton wondered if their momentum will continue at Extreme Rules. Bayley promised Banks would win the Raw Women’s title. They mocked Cross and laughed at her.

Cross and Bliss were watching the interview. Cross noted she lost two weeks in a row, and she lost her confidence. Bliss tried to cheer her up, but it didn’t work. Cross heard Bayley and Banks laughing nearby. Cross snapped and jumped the heels.

Michael Cole and Corey Graves discussed the fifth anniversary of the women’s evolution.

Matt Riddle to challenge for IC title on WWE SmackDown next week

After defeating him in a non-title match, Matt Riddle is getting a shot at AJ Styles’ Intercontinental Championship.

WWE announced tonight that Styles will defend his Intercontinental title against Riddle on next Friday’s episode of SmackDown. In his SmackDown debut after being called up from NXT, Riddle confronted Styles and defeated him in a non-title match three weeks ago.

A backstage interview with Styles aired on SmackDown tonight. Styles said he embarrassed Drew Gulak in their title match last week and no one is worthy of stepping into the ring with him. Interviewer Sarah Schreiber then said she’s been informed that Styles will defend the Intercontinental title against Riddle next Friday. Styles said Riddle’s win against him was a fluke and vowed to beat him next week.

Riddle did an in-ring interview on SmackDown last week before being interrupted by Baron Corbin. Riddle wanted to face Corbin then, but Corbin said Riddle doesn’t just get to walk in here and be handed an opportunity against him. Riddle instead defeated John Morrison.

Styles won the Intercontinental title by defeating Daniel Bryan in a tournament final on the June 12 episode of SmackDown. Styles’ match against Gulak last week was his first defense of the championship.

Riddle posted a video earlier this week denying the sexual assault allegation made against him by Candy Cartwright. Riddle did admit to having an affair with Cartwright.

Riddle also released a statement from his lawyer last month denying the accusation made by Cartwright

Next Friday’s SmackDown is the go-home show for Extreme Rules.

Matt Riddle releases video denying sexual assault and abuse allegations

WWE SmackDown roster member Matt Riddle released a video Wednesday strongly denying any sexual abuse and assault on Candy Cartwright, saying the female wrestler is using the #SpeakingOut movement to get back at him for ending their affair.

In the video seen below, Riddle admitted to cheating on his wife and having an affair with Cartwright (who he called her real name of Samantha Tavel), but that the allegations are “a complete lie, fabricated story.”

He said he was getting sad and depressed during the affair because he was lying to both his wife and his friends and that he eventually told his wife about it. He then blocked Cartwright on social media and changed his phone only for her to allegedly keep finding ways to contact him through other social media accounts and finding his new number.

He also claimed she would show up to hotels and harass his friends as to his whereabouts and that when she didn’t get her way when he wanted to end their relationship, she used the #SpeakingOut movement to ruin his career.

“I never sexually abused or assaulted anyone,” he said.

Nearly a month ago, Cartwright accused Riddle of propositioning her for sex on a van ride with other wrestlers, saying he grabbed her throat and questioned why he shouldn’t make her do it. She admitted to eventually giving him oral sex to alleviate the situation. Riddle denied the claims in a statement through his lawyer on the same day, claiming that in 2019, they were drafting “a pleading against this performer to seek an injunction for cyberstalking in the Circuit Court for Orange County, Florida.”

As of this writing, Cartwright hasn’t responded to the video.
