WWE Main Event results: Peyton Royce vs. Nikki Cross

The Big Takeaway: EC3 lost again, this week to Cedric Alexander. The IIconics were on the show for the second week in a row, but only Peyton Royce was in action, defeating Nikki Cross on Cross’ show debut.

**********

A few changes this week. There was no third man in the announce booth and no third match on the show. Last week had seen the addition of David Otunga, but this week we returned to Byron Saxton and Renee Young on commentary in the usual two-match plus Raw recap format.

Cedric Alexander defeated EC3 (5:23)

Alexander has made a few appearances over the last couple of years on Main Event. He returned last week to beat Cesaro, which was Alexander’s first match on this show in a year.

Alexander and EC3 were good together here, if not a little sluggish towards the end. The match was essentially built around Alexander being the plucky babyface who had too much pace and speed for EC3 to deal with.

Other than Alexander slapping his thigh for literally every move he does, they finished well. After EC3 had gone close, Alexander got the heat and laid him out with a back handspring into an enzuigiri followed by the Lumbar Check.

Fans seem to have largely accepted that EC3 is where he is at the moment, but EC3 has been strangely quiet on Twitter for around a month now. You have to wonder what he makes of his position right now.

Payton Royce (w/ Billie Kay) defeated Nikki Cross (6:40)

Well, they certainly gave Cross plenty in her Main Event debut match here. She looked like she might have even won it until the last few moments.

It was interesting that they gave Cross an appearance here, but if they do the same and beat her in London on Monday, it won’t go down well.

Kay was the obnoxious cheerleader throughout all of this, but Cross did herself no harm at all here. Interestingly, Young noted on commentary that Cross was still “struggling to find where she fits in in the dressing room.” I think that’s WWE-speak for they have no idea what to do with her yet.

The finish was a lot of back and forth with both women frustrated at not being able to best the other. Cross dodged a knee strike and rolled up Royce for two and then Royce connected with a forearm, spin kick, and the fisherman suplex for the win.

WWE Main Event results: Rawley unveils new look, IIconics in action

The Big Takeaway: Mojo Rawley debuted his new look, squashing Heath Slater in under three minutes. The IIconics then made their Main Event debut, defeating Alicia Fox & Tamina in a non-title match.

**********

After Sam Roberts’ appearance on commentary two weeks ago had been criticized by many on social media, David Otunga joined Byron Saxton and Renee Young on announcing duties this week

Mojo Rawley defeated Heath Slater (2:41)

After multiple hype vignettes on Raw, Mojo Rawley finally debuted his new look, strangely doing so on this show. He had new gear and a long dark blue sleeveless hood that was a little reminiscent of the hoods that Demolition wore.

Saxton then spoke about Rawley’s months of self-reflection as Rawley stayed hunched in the corner with his hood covering his face. On the bell, he leaped up and charged at Slater. He pulled back the hood and revealed the face paint that he had in the promo videos.

After beating Slater down and screaming at him, Rawley finished him with a running forearm and a new finisher – an Alabama slam.

In all honesty, it was nothing really all that different to the usual Rawley stuff. It will be more about what they choose to do with him rather than what he does that will affect how this character moves forward. But with a debut on Main Event, the signs don’t look all that positive.

WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions The IIconics (Peyton Royce & Billie Kay) defeated Tamina & Alicia Fox in a non-title match (3:57)

Royce and Kay cut a pre-match promo running down the state of Kentucky and the crowd. They noted that no one else could do what they achieved at WrestleMania and then laughed and posed.

This was as you would expect and wasn’t much of a Main Event debut for The IIconics. It shouldn’t be a surprise anymore to see Tag Team Champions on Main Event, yet it still is – with Raw as a three-hour show, you have to wonder why they can’t make room for their title holders.

The match had broken down and Tamina had bulled Kay and made her scream for mercy. So Royce just marched in the ring and took out Fox. Royce and Kay then teamed up and hit the IIconic knee on Tamina for the win. It looked like a soft victory after lots of stops and starts in the last minute or so.

WWE Main Event results: Sam Roberts debuts on commentary

The Big Takeaway: Sam Roberts joined the announce team as a heel and then there were two wins for the babyfaces: Dana Brooke grabbed a rare victory by defeating Tamina and Heavy Machinery defeated The B-Team.

**********

Sam Roberts joined the announce team this week, replacing Corey Graves. From the way that he was introduced, it felt like the change could become permanent. He played the heel color commentator and the announce booth was Byron Saxton, Renee Young, and Sam Roberts, which I think speaks for itself.

Dana Brooke defeated Tamina (6:00)

Not only did this go on for far too long, but they did exactly what you would think they would do when you look at the result: Tamina beat up Brooke forever, including some rest holds, then Brooke got some brief hope and stole the win with a rana.

As much as both of these performers have a good look, some charisma, and have clocked up some hours in the ring now, neither have really gotten any better as wrestlers. Tamina has to rely on her opponent flying around for her and Brooke is fairly clumsy.

They essentially did the match that you would expect until the last minute or so. Tamina got frustrated at not being able to score the fall and started throwing Brooke around. She went for the Samoan drop, but Brooke wriggled out and snatched the win.

On Twitter, Brooke responded to Roberts’ heel commentator character: “Sam – always thought we were cool, but Damn, wondering why @WWE doesn’t have u on a lot, you burry people!! what have u accomplished.. prob gave up at it, unlike me I push through never giving up!Maybe @ReneeYoungWWE Will be right when I block you & 1 day make U eat your words!”

Heavy Machinery defeated The B-Team (6:02)

The B-Team got quite a good reaction as they came out. They basically did a babyface vs. babyface tag match here until a minute in when Curtis Axel went to shake Otis’ hand and just kicked him in the stomach and beat him up.

It’s pretty evident when you watch Axel and Dallas that they clearly have a lot of fun traveling and tagging together. They’re quite infectious and crowds enjoy them in this kind of pre-Raw context.

It occurred to me when watching this that Heavy Machinery are actually a pretty solid opening act. They have a kind of Dudley Boyz-esque finishing routine that is still over (and likely still will be when they reunite in WWE in 10 years’ time after a stint in the indies) and subsequently leaves everyone happy when they win.

This was timed out pretty well. B-Team cut the ring in half and beat up Otis until Tucker eventually tagged in and cleared house. Heavy Machinery did their normal routine and got the win with The Compactor on Axel.

This was fine. It was quite fun, completely harmless, and thus was your standard Main Event stuff. You have to wonder why WWE doesn’t try to have a little more ambition for this show.

WWE Main Event results: EC3 wins, Heavy Machinery in action

The Big Takeaway: An average show this week. EC3 notched up a win against Tyler Breeze, then Heavy Machinery took their time but managed to defeat The Ascension in the main event.

**********

EC3 defeated Tyler Breeze (4:48)

EC3’s underwhelming main roster run has certainly had people talking. Earlier this month, he didn’t hold back either. When WWE wished him a happy birthday on Twitter he replied with, “Thanks. Catering was delicious.”

He and Breeze are both being underused at present. Breeze has changed up his look. He has had his long hair cut now and has some new tights, but he is still using the same “Prince Pretty” gimmick that he has been using since he, too, was called up from NXT.

EC3 took the lion’s share in this one, with Breeze getting very close to winning at the end. He looked like he would win with a rana like he had done two weeks ago on this show, but EC3 kicked out and beat him with the One Percenter.

Heavy Machinery defeated The Ascension (7:46)

Otis, Tucker, Konnor, and Viktor were all added to the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal this week, as WWE announced 26 wrestlers for the match. They joined the likes of Jeff & Matt Hardy, as well as Saturday Night Live’s Micheal Che and Colin Jost.

It’s about as good as anyone would have expected for The Ascension, but for Heavy Machinery it represents another solid graduate act from NXT that has not been used well.

This one was much longer than it needed to be and was largely dull as they built it around Tucker getting the hot tag. The Ascension cut the ring in half and beat down Otis forever.

Tucker eventually tagged in and cleared house after Otis and Viktor double clotheslined each other. Heavy Machinery did their normal routine and got the win with The Compactor on Viktor to set the crowd up for Raw, happy.

WWE Main Event results: The Revival in eight-man tag action

The Big Takeaway: Curt Hawkins went 0-265 in losing to Rezar, who remains undefeated as a singles wrestler on the main roster. In the main event, Raw Tag Team Champions The Revival lost in an eight-man tag match that saw Viktor take the fall from Titus O’Neil.

**********

Rezar (w/ Drake Maverick) defeated Curt Hawkins (w/ Zack Ryder) (4:47)

Rezar is now 5-0 as a singles competitor on the main roster, while Hawkins’ perennial losing streak has now hit the dizzy heights of 0-265. But Hawkins has his tag team with Ryder and seems to be fairly content with his lot right now.

People forget that Hawkins is actually pretty perfect in this spot. He works really hard to make others look good and, up against big men like Rezar, will fly all over for them.

Unfortunately, when power moves should be his go-to, Rezar resorts to rest holds, but they had a perfectly fine match here that got better the more Hawkins got the hope.

Hawkins tried everything he could to get Rezar off his feet and eventually did so with a second rope shoulder barge. He then nailed Rezar with two DDTs and a top rope elbow drop, but could only get a two count. The crowd really thought Hawkins had him.

Rezar then popped up, unfazed, and caught Hawkins in his tracks in a choke hold and threw him up for a chokeslam in the middle of the ring for the win.

The Lucha House Party (Kalisto, Lince Dorado & Gran Metalik) & Titus O’Neil defeated The Ascension & Raw Tag Team Champions The Revival (3:16)

As has been proven of late, WWE has no issue in beating their champions. And although they didn’t take the pinfall, I guess we shouldn’t be surprised to see The Revival lose. However, there will likely be a few eyebrows raised that the Raw Tag Team Champions were back on this show to begin with.

The Lucha House Party and Titus O’Neil made for fairly strange bedfellows, but O’Neil was the man to give their team the victory here in a match that ran at just over three minutes and yet still went through a commercial break.

There was literally no point in having all eight of these men out there. After the initial lock-up between Kalisto and Scott Dawson, we went to a break. When we came back, it was Kalisto and Konnor.

Konnor tried to cut the ring in half and sold as woodenly as The Warlord circa 1991. Kalisto squirmed out and gave the hot tag to O’Neil. Everyone sort of disappeared and O’Neil clumsily ran wild, then gave the Clash of the Titus to Viktor to pick up the win.

This felt like your typical WrestleMania season fodder: stick everyone out there so that they at least get on the card and so that they can get some airtime, but the entrances lasted longer than the match and no one really got over.

WWE Main Event results: Tyler Breeze defeats EC3

The Big Takeaway: Tyler Breeze snatched a win from the jaws of defeat against EC3, who was not only just on Main Event rather than Raw again this week, but also lost yet again.

Gran Metalik returned to give the Lucha House Party their full complement this week — and they dismissed Jinder Mahal & The Singh Brothers in under four minutes.

**********

Tyler Breeze defeated EC3 (4:08)

So, EC3 lost again on this show. Even-stevens booking was not exactly what fans had in mind for him when he was called up to the main roster, but we are where we are.

It was a match that was really all EC3. He pulled out all of his big moves and Breeze played the plucky babyface who tried to capitalize whenever he could. Breeze has been excellent on this show over the last few months.

Breeze was bullied and beaten down and EC3 played a total heel from bell to bell. He had offered a handshake at the start, but it was all a ruse to just slap Breeze’s hand out of the way so that he could punch him in the face.

In fairness, the finish was played up as Breeze stealing one. He was being beaten down and managed to put EC3 into a rana and then made out of there like a bandit. Breeze even looked shocked himself and EC3 was understandably irate.

Tune in next week for more former NXT star burial.

The Lucha House Party (Kalisto, Lince Dorado & Gran Metalik) defeated Jinder Mahal & The Singh Brothers (3:42)

The pattern every week now seems to be that Mahal and The Singhs go up against a babyface six-man tag team and lose pretty convincingly. Mahal tends to feature as little as possible and the match runs at around three minutes.

This was no different in that Mahal took one small bump and produced one big boot, but he did go on to visibly berate the Singhs after the match as they backed their way up the ramp.

The match was all action given the time that they had, but this week involved Gran Metalik (who had been replaced in this match last week by Tyler Breeze). He dazzled here with his impressive style and was then involved in the finish.

Metalik was the legal man and hit his rope-walk diving elbow drop on to Sunil Singh. Lince Dorado had blind tagged in and followed this up with his Shooting Star Press for the win. Short match. Nice finish, but nothing to it.

WWE Main Event results: EC3 gets his win back

The Big Takeaway: EC3 defeated Apollo Crews in a rematch of last week’s main event. Kalisto, Lince Dorado & Tyler Breeze then saw off Jinder Mahal & The Singh Brothers in a pointlessly short bout.

**********

EC3 defeated Apollo Crews (5:24)

After the outcry last week at him being on this show, losing, and losing to someone who currently means as little as Apollo Crews, EC3 got his win back. In the spirit of 50/50 booking, this rematch looked to be heading the same way until the last 30 seconds.

They did some mat work early on and a lot of rest holds. Crews worked over EC3’s left arm that he continued to sell throughout. EC3 bullied him for a little and taunted him until Crews got the heat.

At the finish, Crews nailed EC3 through the ropes to the outside with an enzuigiri. Crews then rolled him back in and went up top. EC3 got to his feet and pulled the ropes so that Crews tumbled off. This allowed EC3 to hit the One Percenter in the middle of the ring for the win.

A pro to the last, EC3 still sold his left arm after the bell, berating the referee for trying to raise it. He rolled his eyes and made the ref switch sides to raise his right instead.

Kalisto, Lince Dorado & Tyler Breeze defeated Jinder Mahal & The Singh Brothers (3:10)

This was fun while it lasted, but was inexplicably short for a six-man tag that had so much talent on the babyface team. Mahal, who only took two bumps in the match and didn’t tag in, had his right shoulder heavily strapped with kinesio tape.

In the three minutes that they were given, they essentially put on a tag match for The Singhs to get as much ring time as they could. Kalisto and Dorado moved around at 100 mph and Breeze, who was sporting a new goatee, cleared house, looking impressive yet again this week.

After neutralizing Mahal with a superkick, he rolled out of the ring and stayed there. Breeze took out Sunil and Kalisto and Dorado teamed up to finish off Samir. Kalisto used the Salida del Sol and Dorado came off the top with a Shooting Star Press to take the win.

WWE Main Event results: EC3 loses on his show debut

The Big Takeaway: In a match that was virtually identical to their bout last week, Rezar defeated No Way Jose for the second week running. Apollo Crews then defeated EC3 in a mediocre offering.

**********

Rezar (w/ Drake Maverick) defeated No Way Jose (5:30)

They could have run a replay of last week’s match from Main Event and I genuinely wouldn’t have noticed. This was almost move for move the same match as the one before, running at about a minute longer.

So, just like last week, instead of giving Rezar the chance to look like a real heavyweight threat, he beat up Jose and then spent more than half the match using rest holds.

Rezar had pinned Jose after a big boot and a chokeslam a week ago. This week, it was a clothesline and a chokeslam. Subtle difference, same outcome. I’m not sure what this achieved or why they did a rematch that displayed such little ambition or creativity.

Apollo Crews defeated EC3 (6:47)

I could almost hear the inevitable collective groan when people read the headline of this show recap.

I hear you. We’re all asking the same things: Why is EC3 on this show? Why did he lose? Why did he lose to someone with such little currency? How can they be handling NXT talent like EC3 so misguidedly on the main roster? The list goes on.

Well, anyway, he lost. And the match was okay, but it was nothing spectacular. EC3 used a swinging neckbreaker for a near fall and then they collided in the middle. Crews got up first, got the heat, and came off the top rope with a crossbody for a two count.

EC3 then got some hope, but Crews kicked out of the One Percenter. He then stopped EC3 in his tracks with an enzuigiri before finishing him with the standing moonsault.

WWE Main Event results: Six-man tag, Rezar vs. No Way Jose

The Big Takeaway: Two fairly bland matches this week with Rezar beating No Way Jose in the opener and The B-Team & Tyler Breeze notching up another win over Jinder Mahal & The Singhs in a rematch of last week’s main event.

**********

Rezar (w/ Drake Maverick) defeated No Way Jose (4:26)

On the surface, this match didn’t feel all that different from something that would have appeared on the old WWF Superstars: you had the heavyset villain complete with a milquetoast manager and the babyface trying to pull off a short-sighted gimmick in whacky colored tights.

What was different, though, was the length. This ought to have been a squash match that showed off Rezar’s strength and potential for dominance. Instead, he beat up Jose, who only got some brief hope and spent more than half the match using rest holds.

After making much more of this than they needed to, Rezar ended this with a big boot and a chokeslam in the middle of the ring. The win leaves Rezar undefeated as a main roster singles competitor.

The B-Team & Tyler Breeze defeated Jinder Mahal & The Singh Brothers (4:34)

This was a rematch of last week’s Main Event match and was almost move for move the same with exactly the same outcome. Breeze, who was the standout again here, is so undervalued at this point that it would do him no harm to hit the reboot button.

Mahal was once again notable by his lack of in-ring presence. He was in and out quickly — and the babyfaces made short work of him in order to clear their path to beat down the Singh Brothers. It’s clear that Sunil and Samir are improving, slowly but surely.

At the finish, the ring was empty with Sunil looking like he was going to finish off a prone Breeze. But Breeze was playing possum and, just as he did last week, sprung up as Sunil was running the ropes and nailed him with The Beauty Shot for the win.

WWE Main Event results: Heavy Machinery make their show debut

The Big Takeaway: Heavy Machinery made their Main Event debut and picked up a win against The Ascension. The B-Team & Tyler Breeze saw off Jinder Mahal & The Singh Brothers at the end of the show with relative ease.

**********

Heavy Machinery defeated The Ascension (5:10)

Since they moved up to the main roster, Otis and Tucker have had four matches to date. Their debut in January saw them defeat The Ascension on Raw, but since then have been victims of defeats in fatal four-way and four corners tag matches.

If you’re not an NXT viewer, then what you need to know about these two men is that they are impressive, agile, and very strong. Their finisher, which they used here, is The Compactor, a kind of piggyback World’s Strongest Slam.

The match wasn’t much until the end. They built a basic story around Tucker playing babyface in peril while Otis waited desperately for the hot tag. Otis trash talked Konnor, goading him to get tagged in.

When he finally got it, Otis absolutely ran wild, culminating in both his caterpillar elbow drop and The Compactor on Viktor for their show debut win.

The B-Team & Tyler Breeze defeated Jinder Mahal & The Singh Brothers (4:34)

A little under two years ago, Jinder Mahal was WWE Champion. In the old days, his title reign being over would have probably seen him leave the territory and move on. But now, WWE mostly demotes the likes of Mahal to shows like this, dark matches, and house shows. It’s a difficult premise for anyone to particularly relish.

As in previous weeks, Mahal did very little and the Singh Brothers spent the match stalling for time, engaging in dance-offs and comedy spots, and doing their best to flip around for their opponents.

Curtis Axel booted Mahal off the apron and into the dasher boards at the finish. This left Breeze to lock in a half Boston crab on Sunil Singh — before the ring filled again. With Mahal and Samir Singh taken out by the B-Team, it allowed Breeze to hit the Beauty Shot on Sunil for the win.

WWE Main Event results: Natalya vs. Lacey Evans

The Big Takeaway: Lacey Evans remains winless since joining the main roster, this week submitting to Natalya. No Way Jose picked up his first singles win of 2019, defeating Tyler Breeze in the main event of the show.

**********

Natalya defeated Lacey Evans (6:06)

Evans made her main roster debut against Natalya on what seemed to be a Main Event taping last month, but for some reason it didn’t air. Instead, they ran an in-studio Raw-rehash show that was hosted by Scott Stanford. At that taping, she tapped out to Natalya, just as she did here.

They were looking to revive their Royal Rumble rivalry, where Evans and Natalya started the women’s Royal Rumble match off together. Evans managed just under 30 minutes that night, but was ultimately dumped out by Charlotte Flair.

Here, though, Evans was pretty fantastic. And working with such an excellent wrestler like Natalya, she was made even more impressive. Evans sold really well, had believable histrionics, and looked really tough when she got fired up for the heat. Her Merosault is also quite the finisher.

After teasing the Sharpshooter early on, Natalya eventually locked it on in the center of the ring — and Evans didn’t take long to tap. This was very good; Main Event could do a lot worse than to have more of this each week.

No Way Jose defeated Tyler Breeze (3:37)

This one went surprisingly quickly and was played as babyface vs. babyface, with Breeze applauding Jose’s entrance into the ring and both men shaking hands and helping each other up during the match.

To give both their due, they did well in the time that they had: they did several close finishes, with Breeze just kicking out of a flapjack and Jose getting his shoulder up after a superkick. They teased a ref bump, went through a commercial, and did a spot where Jose was able to reverse the Unprettier.

Whether this is a compliment or a good thing, I don’t know, but there’s something strangely reminiscent of Koko B Ware in some of Jose’s moves. Ultimately, he won when he slingshotted Breeze into the turnbuckle and then whipped him into the rope to nail him with the pop-up punch.

There is always lots of energy to their matches and Breeze is a very competent technical wrestler, so they probably deserve better than this.

WWE Main Event results: Lucha House Party vs. Mahal & The Singhs

The Big Takeaway: The babyfaces won both matches this week. The Lucha House Party combined to defeat Jinder Mahal & The Singh Brothers, and The B-Team then took out The Ascension in under two minutes.

**********

Byron Saxton and Renee Young led the announce team again this week alongside Percy Watson. This seems to be the permanent setup now.

Lucha House Party (Kalisto, Lince Dorado & Gran Metalik) defeated Jinder Mahal & The Singh Brothers (5:35)

It’s not been much of a start to 2019 for Mahal. The loss here left him without a win since the end of December, and his Royal Rumble performance saw him with one of the five shortest survival times.

This was a rematch of their Raw bout from the Royal Rumble go-home show. In that one, Metalik won with a backbreaker — and the finish might’ve been a botch when Sunil didn’t break up the pin in time and the announcers seemed caught off guard.

Here, Lucha House Party took out Mahal and used a combination of their finishing moves to see off the Singh Brothers.

Samir broke up a cover by Kalisto on Sunil. Dorado hit him with the Golden Rewind, then Kalisto sprung up and nailed Sunil with the Salida Del Sol. Dorado came off the top rope with a Shooting Star Press on Sunil for the win.

This was okay, but the Singh Brothers were a little sloppy and struggled to take some of the moves towards the end.

The B-Team defeated The Ascension (1:50)

Curtis Axel took to Twitter this week commenting on a fairly glaring issue with WWE’s booking. With Nia Jax taking out R-Truth so that he didn’t enter the Royal Rumble, Truth was gifted a United States Championship title match. Axel never got the same treatment and has a point, but his stock is pretty low these days.

There was nothing to this match and they went quickly with it, despite it even going through a WrestleMania commercial. These two teams have been facing off against each other over the last few months on Main Event and Raw. The B-Team have generally been taking the spoils, but this was their first win of the year.

They went to the finish after Konnor broke up a pin attempt by Axel on Viktor. Konnor ran towards Bo Dallas, but Dallas pulled the top rope down and sent him to the matting outside.

Dallas tagged in and they teamed up to hit their as yet unnamed belly-to-back suplex/neckbreaker combo on Viktor for the win.

WWE Main Event results: Rezar in singles action

The Big Takeaway: With Akam recovering from a knee injury, Rezar performed solo this week, defeating Tyler Breeze in impressive fashion. Mojo Rawley and No Way Jose also went toe-to-toe, with Rawley grabbing a rare win.

**********

Byron Saxton and Renee Young led the announce team this week alongside Percy Watson with no word as to the whereabouts of Vic Joseph or Nigel McGuinness.

Rezar (w/ Drake Maverick) defeated Tyler Breeze (5:29)

This wasn’t like one of those 1992 WWF Superstars squash matches that I’ve been watching on the WWE Network this week. Breeze played the plucky babyface and got quite a few chances to take the match, but Rezar came through by using a chokeslam for the win.

Back in May, AOP made their main roster debut on this show, and other than a match against Titus O’Neil on Raw a few months back, this was Rezar’s only other singles bout on the main roster to date. Rezar looked impressive here, but Breeze a played a part in making him appear so strong.

After it looked like Rezar had it all sewn up, Breeze managed to reverse a powerbomb attempt into a sleeper. They looked like they lost their way slightly at the end when Rezar couldn’t get Breeze in position for the finish — and when he did the chokeslam was a little messy. That said, if used right, they have a big guy in Rezar who could really get over.

Mojo Rawley defeated No Way Jose (6:41)

This was a little more muted than the normal Jose matches with the conga line providing a soundtrack to the match. It ended in defeat for Jose, but gave Rawley his first win in 2019, making it his only one in the last four months.

Jose had tagged up with Zack Ryder last week — and they actually looked like a team that could work. They were slick together and the conga line joined in with Ryder’s “woo” fist pumps. Ryder was nowhere to be seen this week, though, and Jose garnered less reaction when he came out.

It was a fairly tepid 50-50 match until the finish. Jose hit a crossbody from the second rope on Rawley and then got him up in a fireman’s carry position, but when Rawley fought out, he hit his shoulder block on Jose.

This got Jose dazed enough for Rawley to lock in and hit a sit-out Alabama slam for the win.

WWE Main Event results: James & Fox vs. Moon & Brooke

The Big Takeaway: After WWE put out a pure Raw-rehash episode last week fronted by Scot Stanford, Main Event returned to its usual format this week with two pretty good tag matches.

Zack Ryder & No Way Jose worked well in tandem to score a victory in the opener, and Mickie James & Alicia Fox picked up a rare win at the end of the show.

**********

Tom Phillips and Percy Watson were on commentary this week as Vic Joseph and Nigel McGuinness were in England covering NXT UK.

Zack Ryder & No Way Jose defeated Curt Hawkins & Tyler Breeze (5:03)

A couple of notes before this one: Ryder has had a new mix done on his entrance music so that it feels a little fresher, Breeze is now sporting a beard that arguably rivals Ryder’s for shape and style, and Hawkins is now 0-256 coming out of this one.

Jose’s conga line made up for the lack of interest from the crowd as the early going saw Jose take on Hawkins and Breeze. A failed split-leg moonsault by Hawkins allowed Jose to get the hot tag to Ryder, who all but finished off Hawkins with the Broski Boot — only for the cover to be interrupted by Breeze.

Hawkins went pretty close to finally getting his win as he rolled up Ryder for 2.75. But the finish was all action as the ring filled and Jose hit Hawkins with the pop-up punch and then launched Ryder up in the air on to Breeze to hit the Rough Ryder for the win.

This was fun while it lasted. The conga line always gives Jose’s matches a little something else in terms of atmosphere and heat.

Mickie James & Alicia Fox defeated Dana Brooke & Ember Moon (7:13)

Despite being on the main roster for over 10 years now, Fox doesn’t pick up many wins. The surprise win for her & James here over Brooke & Moon, in a somewhat slow and muted match, is their first for 2019.

Fox and James cut the ring in half, dominating Moon with quick tags. Eventually, James missed a big boot looking like she’d tweaked her right knee and Brooke got the hot tag. Brooke barged into the ring, awkwardly taking out both James and Fox, before hitting a flapjack on Fox.

The high spot was Moon assisting Brooke off her shoulders to hit a senton onto Fox, but it wasn’t enough as Fox was able to come back to hit a big boot on Brooke. James then finished Brooke off with the Mickie-DT for the win.

WWE Main Event results: Revival win, Hawkins’ streak continues

The Big Takeaway: Not much of a show to kick off 2019. Titus O’Neil picked up a win against perennial loser Curt Hawkins. The Revival headlined the episode for the first time since November to see off Tyler Breeze & Zack Ryder.

**********

Happy New Year, everyone.

The episode opened up with a graphic paying tribute to the late, great “Mean” Gene Okerlund.

Titus O’Neil defeated Curt Hawkins (4:52)

A new year, but the same old Curt Hawkins. Now at 0-252, the losing streak storyline appears to still be going nowhere, but a light “let’s go Hawkins” chant started up as these two locked up.

O’Neil got the crowd back on his side when he nailed Hawkins with a big open-handed chop that caused an audible “ooh,” followed by calls for “one more chop.” O’Neil smiled at the reaction, but Hawkins quickly took over the momentum.

There was really nothing much to this one in the end. The finish saw O’Neil connect with a big boot, followed by a hip toss and a running splash to Hawkins in the corner. O’Neil then hit the Clash of the Titus for the win.

The Revival defeated Tyler Breeze & Zack Ryder (7:44)

The Revival arguably spent far too much of 2018 on Main Event, despite calls from keen followers for them to be used more creatively on the main roster, and they find themselves back here again at the start of 2019. That said, Scott Dawson and Dash Wilder were easily the best thing about this match, that by the end was 100 mph.

It might have been poor editing, but a lot of Breeze’s moves were quite obviously whiffing at thin air in the opening minutes and made Dawson and Wilder look a lot more legitimate in their move set. The rather expectant pre-Raw crowd seemed to get into it later on as they traded near falls.

The end of the match saw Ryder incapacitated outside. Breeze got a two count on Dawson and rolled to the apron and then drove his shoulder into Dawson’s midriff. When he then flipped into the ring over Dawson’s back, Wilder tagged in. As Breeze ran the ropes, Wilder and Dawson hit the Shatter Machine for the win.
