Monday News Update

  • Bryan and I will be back talking Raw, Kota Ibushi, Women’s tag titles, and more wrestling and MMA news tonight with Wrestling Observer Radio. You can send questions to the show to [email protected]
  • Kota Ibushi tweeted today where he said that his mother had attempted suicide just after Mother’s Day and blamed it on the stress from the ordeal is he was going through. He also said that he was texted a dismissal notice without a meeting but said that he would be getting a meeting shortly. He again targeted NJPW President Takami Ohbari and assistant booker Yusuki Kikuchi as the source of his problems.
  • Regarding Friday’s Rampage, there is no set time for the show. On Friday they listed 5:30 p.m. Eastern and 2:30 p.m. Pacific, but the start time will depend on the NHL schedule. The plan right now is for Rampage to air before the game or games start, and for the Countdown to Double or Nothing show to air after the games are over on TNT. It’s possible there will be two games. It’s possible there will be one. And it’s possible there won’t be any depending on how the Avalanche vs. Blues and Panthers vs. Lightning series goes. Avalanche is up 2-1 and Lighting are up 3-0, so there is a very good chance that series will be over. Avalanche-Blues is Avalanche up 2-1. If the Avalanche wins tonight and Wednesday, there is no Friday game.
  • Raw is tonight in Evansville, IN. The only match announced as of earlier today was Cody Rhodes vs. The Miz. There is also Bobby Lashley’s Almighty Challenge to Omos, whatever that means.
  • Raw tonight goes against the Miami Heat vs. Boston Celtics game starting at 8:30 p.m. With nothing major announced, it could be tough. The Warriors can clinch a spot in the finals tomorrow against NXT, so that is also tough competition. If the Warriors lose, game five would be Thursday and game six would be Saturday. In Celtics-Heat, game five will be Wednesday opposite AEW. Game six would be Friday against Smackdown. Game seven would be against the AEW PPV show, which would take a bite out of that show.
  • There are also NHL playoffs tonight with Panthers vs. vs. Lightning in 7 p.m. and Avalanche vs. Blues at 9:30 p.m. There are also two NHL games opposite wrestling on both Tuesday and Wednesday.
  • AEW and Joe Hand Promotions are again working together for Double or Nothing in movie theaters around the country. To check if there is a theater in your area, it’s at JoeHandPromotions.com
  • Kevin Kelly tweeted that it may be soon that New Japan fans will be able to cheer and boo at shows, saying he was hopeful it would be by the 6/3 show at Budokan Hall. Ohbari had also hinted the same thing last week without giving any kind of a date.
  • New Japan has a ten-match Best of the Super Juniors show tomorrow morning at 5:30 a.m. Eastern from Korakuen Hall with all tournament matches.
  • Alex Zayne vs. Francesco Akira
  • Titan vs. TJP
  • Ryusuke Taguchi vs. Clark Connors
  • Bushi vs. Wheeler Yuta
  • Yoh vs. Ace Austin
  • Douki ve. El Phantasmo
  • Master Wato vs. Robbie Eagles
  • Hiromu Takahashi vs. Yoshinobu Kanemaru
  • Sho vs. Taiji Ishimori
  • Desperado vs. Lindaman
  • We’re looking for reports from these weekend shows:
  • WWE Saturday in Rockford, IL
  • WWE yesterday in Fort Wayne, IN
  • WWE yesterday in Cedar Rapids, IA
  • RevPro yesterday from York Hall in London
  • We’re looking for results, finishes and highlights to [email protected]
  • Regarding open scoring in MMA has gotten a lot of talk since the Rose Namajunas vs. Carla Esparza fight. That dreadful fight would have almost for sure had more action if Namajunas knew she was losing rounds. She’d know she would have to pick up the pace, Shannon Knapp, the CEO and promoter of Invicta, one of the three major MMA groups (Invicta, LFA and Combate Global) now using open scoring regularly, said to us, “Nothing but positive feedback from all at Invicta. I’m for anything that puts some of the control back into the athlete’s hands. It doesn’t solve all problems, but still a valuable tool for an athlete. Knowledge is king ad using it to make adjustments in real-time is priceless.”
  • Young Rock will be finishing its season with two episodes tomorrow at 8 and 8:30 p.m.
  • Besides losing Will Ospreay, Jeff Cobb also missed yesterday’s RevPro show at York Hall. Cobb was to face RKJ, but he was replaced by Aaron Henare. RKJ won that match as well. As noted yesterday, people have raved about the Aussie Open vs. Velocities match. Will Ospreay was replaced by Michael Oku in the main event, losing to Minoru Suzuki.

WWE

  • NXT tomorrow has a ton of matches announced:
  • Bron Breakker vs. Duke Hudson non-title
  • Mandy Rose vs. Indi Hartwell non-title
  • Pretty Deadly vs. Roderick Strong & Damon Kemp non-title
  • Elektra Lopez vs Alba Fyre
  • Wes Lee vs, Sanga
  • Stacks & Two Times vs. Malik Blade & Edris Enofe
  • Ikemen Jiro vs Von Wagner
  • With no singles “world” champions touring, it will be interesting to see what they do for house show main events. Right now on the Raw brand, they are having Bianca Belair title defenses as the main event every night. Smackdown still headlines with Roman Reigns but his days of doing house shows touring are dwindling to a close.
  • The Chicago Cubs will be doing a WWE themed night on 5/30.
  • The WWE Network/Peacock will be adding summer 1995 episodes of WWE Superstars.

Sunday News Update

  • Bryan and I will be back talking the weekend shows and latest news. You can also send questions to the show regarding the main stories of the past week and the current issue to [email protected]
  • As far as an update on Kota Ibushi, he has not been fired at this point so they are not giving up on the relationship but obviously New Japan and Bushiroad is very unhappy with the publicity. He has toned down on Twitter in the last 36 hours. Ibushi’s only tweet of note in the last three days translated into “I will fight until the end. I will not surrender to them.” The only wrestlers who have really commented are Toru Yano on his podcast, saying he wasn’t happy that Ibushi confused the fans but said he was still a New Japan wrestler and as still his friend. Kenny Omega tweeted in Japanese, “Fire of resurrection will burn bright again someday. Let’s hang on until then everybody.”
  • Kevin Von Erich turned 65 today.
  • We’re looking for your thoughts on last night’s New Japan Capital Collision show, so you can leave a thumbs up, thumbs down or thumbs in the middle along with a best and worst match to [email protected]

  • There was a fight between a wrestler and fan at an indie show over the weekend that has gotten a lot of talk. This is the incident.
  • Regarding searches for the combat sports this week, no pro wrestling broke into the top 20 all week. Only two things did all week, both yesterday. UFC was No. 12 at 100,000 and the Jermell Charlo vs. Brian Castano boxing match was No. 15, also at 100,000.
  • Mike “Virgil” Jones announced he had stage two colon cancer. Best wishes to him.

  • Regarding last night’s show in the Katlyn Chookagian vs. Amanda Ribas judging, Derek Cleary gave only round two to Chookagian. Sal D’Amato gave Chookagian rounds two and three as did Junichiro Kamijo so she won a spit decision. Media scores were 83 percent for Chookagian so it seems the consensus whe won the fight winning rounds two and three. While kept secret, after the fight Marcelo Ribas, father of Amanda, noted that Amanda had done the fight with a totally ruptured biceps 25 days before the fight.

WWE

  • On Smackdown Friday night, the dark match results were Los Lotharios over Viking Raiders (Lotharios worked as babyfaces in the match as a surprise) and Bobby Lashley over Happy Corbin in the main event with a spear, (thanks to Bradley Augenstein).
  • On today’s USFL broadcast on NBC, they did a promotion spot for Raw. He hasn’t fought in one year and said UFC has been offering him fights and he’s been agreeing to them but the opponents keep turning him down. He mentioned Tony Ferguson, Michael Chandler and Rafael dos Anjos as people who turned down fights with him.

Other Notes

  • Stand Alone Wrestling on 5/21 in Norwich CT at Pistol Pete’s features Davey Richards, Serpentico, Marko Stunt and Lince Dorado. There is also a Fan Fest before the show with Bob Backlund, Sabu, Nuncio, Gangrel, Kalisto and Manny Fernandez along with the wrestlers on the show.

May 16, 2022 Observer Newsletter: Roman Reigns cutting back on WWE appearances, Kota Ibushi-NJPW issues

WWE’s biggest and most-pushed wrestler, the combined WWE and Universal champion Roman Reigns has reached a new agreement with the company that includes cutting way back on appearances.

Reigns, real name Leati Joseph Anoa’i, whose father Leati Sika Anoa’i was a 70s and 80s star as Sika of the Wild Samoans tag team, turns 37 later this month. On the 5/7 house show in Trenton, NJ, he said that this might be the last time he wrestles in Trenton and is going through a new phase in life. After the WrestleMania Backlash PPV, he teased that it might be the last time he teams with his cousins, the Usos, in a six-man tag.

Reigns’ exact schedule and details of it weren’t clear past that he will work television dates, but not every week, may not be doing house shows much longer or if so, very limited, and he won’t even be on every PPV show.

Kota Ibushi expresses frustration with NJPW management on social media

Kota Ibushi has taken to social media regarding his recent frustrations with NJPW management.

Ibushi has been writing on Twitter in the last day expressing his frustration with NJPW management, including being upset that he felt he was being rushed back too early by NJPW in December, when he felt he was not ready to return from his shoulder injury suffered in October. At one point, he showed text messages from someone named Kikuchi. Voices of Wrestling is reporting via their Patreon that Kikuchi is a person from NJPW’s talent relations department who threatened to end Ibushi’s contract with NJPW due to an appearance at a recent Just Tap Out show on March 4 that was not approved by Kikuchi.

VOW is additonally reporting that Ibushi told the NJPW office that he was ready for the New Japan Cup after originally not being ready for Wrestle Kingdom 16. Ibushi was scheduled to win the tournament, but was pulled from the event by Kikuchi on the advice of a doctor for what VOW describes as ‘minor concern’.

“There is more than smoke to the fire,” Dave Meltzer wrote regarding Ibushi’s frustrations with management. “Ibushi has problems with upper management that are significant. Gedo…is trying to smooth them out, but it’s not settled.”

Ibushi has been out of action with a shoulder injury since last October while wrestling Kazuchika Okada in the finals of the G1 Climax tournament. The match was stopped and Okada was declared the winner. He was later announced as returning for the NJPW Cup, with his first match scheduled to be against Great-O-Khan. but was pulled prior to the tournament.

Kota Ibushi and Hiroyoshi Tenzan off NJPW Cup tournament due to injury

Kota Ibushi and Hiroyoshi Tenzan are both out of the upcoming Anniversary and New Japan Cup shows that are set to start this week.

NJPW announced tonight that it was decided that Ibushi would take more time to recover from his shoulder injury he suffered back at the G1 Climax 31 finals back in October. Tenzan is also out due to a knee injury suffered during the Golden Series tour.

“Kota Ibushi has been diligently preparing for a scheduled return on March 1 at the Nippon Budokan,” NJPW’s website wrote. “However, after careful consultation with trainers, medical staff and the NJPW medical committee, and based on the results of a final medical evaluation, the difficult decision has been made to delay Ibushi’s return, and remove him from Wednesday’s Anniversary card.”

As a result of both Ibushi and Tenzan being off of this year’s New Japan Cup tournament, they have forfeited their matches. Great-O-Khan, who was set to face Ibushi, will now advance to the second round, facing Taiji Ishimori on March 12. Tenzan was scheduled to face the winner of Taichi and Toru Yano, set to take place on March 9. Instead, the winner of Taichi vs. Yano will advance to the third round, next wrestling on March 15 in Aichi.

Ibushi and Tenzan were set to team in an eight man tag match on the Anniversary show card. They have been replaced by Yuto Nakashima and Kosei Fujita.

NJPW’s Kota Ibushi expected to miss two months with shoulder injury

NJPW has provided an injury update on Kota Ibushi.

In a statement released on their website, NJPW says that Ibushi suffered a right anterior dislocation of the shoulder, plus joint lip damage. His estimated recovery time was listed as two months.

Ibushi was injured during the G1 Climax 31 finals on October 21. While wrestling Kazuchika Okada in the main event of the tournament finale, Ibushi missed a phoenix splash and immediately clutched his arm after landing. The match was stopped and the win was awarded to Okada.

Ringside attendants and trainers appeared to be trying to put Ibushi’s shoulder back into socket in the ring in the aftermath of the injury.

The two-month recovery timetable would mean that Ibushi is expected to be available for NJPW Wrestle Kingdom, set to take place over three nights on January 4, January 5 and January 8, 2022.

2021 has been a year marred by health problems for Ibushi. In addition to the shoulder injury, he missed two months earlier in the year while suffering from aspiration pneumonia.
