Friday Update

Our weekend schedule will be a show with Garrett Gonzales today and we obviously have an incredible amount to talk about. Bryan and I will be back Sunday night covering all the weekend notes.

Obviously coming off last night there is a lot to digest for Smackdown tonight in Charlotte, NC and I expect a big number. No Roman Reigns or Rock are expected, but Cody Rhodes is there and HHH is there as well. They were just shy of a sellout at last look with more than 12,000 out. Announced for the show is: Zelina Vega vs. Naomi in a Chamber qualifier, Bianca Belair vs. Michin in a Chamber qualifier, Logan Paul will find out who he is facing at Elimination Chamber, Tyler Bate & Pete Dunne vs. Johnny Gargano & Tommaso Ciampa with the winners facing Damian Priest & Finn Balor for the tag titles at Elimination Chamber

Rampage tonight at 10 p.m. on TNT: Orange Cassidy & Rocky Romero & Trent Baretta vs. Roderick Strong & Mike Bennett & Matt Taven, Young Bucks vs. Mondo Rox & Robbie Lit, Mistico vs. Matt Sydal, Kris Statlander & Willow Nightingale vs. Saraya & Ruby Soho. Crazy we have this random Mistico appearance tonight.

NTV in Japan ran a special show today from Korakuen Hall as the 70th anniversary of pro wrestling on the network. The network ran pro wrestling from 1954 to 2009, the longest run of any television station in the world, starting with JWA, then All Japan Pro Wrestling and finally Pro Wrestling NOAH before they cut wrestling due to economic issues and cost cutting. They had live matches including a great Kaito Kiyomiya vs. Yuma Anzai main event won by Kiyomiya. There were a lot of great video packages on the greatest tag team to appear on the network like The Sharpe Brothers, Bruiser Brody & Stan Hansen, The Funks, Road Warriors, British Bulldogs, Misawa & Kobashi and more. They also had one on legendary moves, as well as a Terry Funk tribute with Atsshi Onita and Masa Fuchi talking about Funk. Funk was Onita’s mentor. Another package was on the most legendary feuds like Giant Baba vs. Abdullah the Butcher, Jumbo Tsuruta vs. Genichiro Tenryu, Mitsuharu Misawa vs. Toshiaki Kawada, Misawa vs. Kobashi and KENTA vs. Naomichi Marufuji. They also showed some of the most famous title wins for Rikidozan, Baba (beating Jack Brisco for the NWA title), Tsuruta vs. Hansen, Tenryu vs. Tsuruta, Misawa vs. Hansen and more. (thanks to Gerard Di Trolio)

Dwayne Johsnon is in talks for both appearing in the animated Moana 2 as well as they look to be filming a live action version of the first Moana later this year. Johnson talked about both yesterday on the Pat McAfee show.

PWInsider reported that there was a bench warrant issued for Edward Annis (Teddy Hart) after failing to appear in court regarding his 7/15 arrest for possession of ecstasy and possession of a controlled substance without a prescription. Because of the failure to appear, his $2,000 bond has been revoked.

TNA Rebellion will be 4/20 back in Las Vegas at the Palms. We do know that while this was not related to his firing, Scott D’Amore wanted this show at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York rather than to go right back to Las Vegas so soon after a PPV and TV taping.

A correction from today’s Observer when talking about the March 2023 Giulia vs. Maya Yukihi match. It was about issues in that match taking place that involved Stardom’s Katsuhiko Harada, who wanted it, and Rossy Ogawa, who didn’t. We reported it was a double count out because Giulia was the World of Stardom champion and Yukihi was the Ice Robbin champion. However Yukihi was not the Ice Robbin champion. The double count out wasn’t because both were champions, but because whether it was Ice Ribbon or Yukihi, they couldn’t get a finish out of the match so did a double count out. It was a super match. But I do remember being told when it was over that you’d think there would be a rematch after that finish, but there wasn’t going to be, as the finish was the only way to get the match in the ring (thanks to Paul Cziuba)

For this weekend, we’ll be doing our poll on the New Japan New Beginning in Osaka which includes Will Ospreay’s last New Japan match an Kazuchika Okada’s last match in Osaka against Hiroshi Tanahashi in the final match of one of the all-time great in-ring rivalries in history and Bryan Danielson vs. Zack Sabre Jr. The show starts at 3 a.m. Eastern and midnight Pacific late tomorrow night with a cage match with the United Empire led by Ospreay against the Bullet Club War Dogs led by David Finlay. You can leave a thumbs up, thumbs down or thumbs in the middle along with a best and worst match to [email protected]

Speaking of Ospreay, this is a tremendous build for the 2/18 Ospreay vs. Michael Oku British heavyweight title match in London. In particular, check out the work by Amira, the girlfriend of Oku. It’s among the best promos you’ll see:

We didn’t get this in time for the issue but Post Wrestling reported that Wednesday’s Dynamite show did the best ratings for the show in Canada in 11 months. It did 193,000 viewers with 95,600 in 25-54, which is the prime demo for advertisers in Canada. It beat both Raw & Smackdown this week in the key demo and was close to Smackdown in total viewers for the past week.

My last appearance on the Ashley Banfield show is here:

NJPW-AJPW joint show, Joshi festival announced for Korakuen Hall

NJPW and AJPW will be holding a joint show on April 16 to commemorate Korakuen Hall’s 60th birthday, with a Joshi festival taking place the day before.

Tokyo Sports reports that wrestling shows will be part of the Korakuen Hall 60th Birthday Festival on April 15, and April 16, 2022. A Women’s Wrestling Dream Festival will take place on April 15, with the NJPW-AJPW show taking place on April 16.

No cards have been announced for either show, and no Joshi promotions were named for the April 15 event in the Tokyo Sports report.

It is not clear whether or not there will be any inter-promotional matches at the NJPW-AJPW event. The report states that further details are expected to be announced in the new year.

The joint show announcement comes during a time when NJPW is also working with Pro Wrestling NOAH, as night three of Wrestle Kingdom 16 will feature NJPW vs. NOAH talent on January 8 at Yokohama Arena.

Korakuen Hall opened on April 16, 1962. In addition to the legendary venue’s birthday, both NJPW and AJPW will be celebrating their 50th anniversary in 2022.

Hana Kimura memorial show announced for May 23

A Hana Kimura tribute show has been announced for May.

Kimura’s mother Kyoko announced that a memorial show called “See You Again” will take place on May 23 at Korakuen Hall. It will mark the one year anniversary of Kimura’s death.

Kimura committed suicide on May 23, 2020 at the age of 22. She was a cast member of the reality television series Terrance House, where she got into a verbal confrontation with a house member after he damaged her wrestling attire. Her actions in the episode drew intense criticism online, to the point of cyberbullying. After her death the television series, which aired on Netflix, was cancelled.

During her career in Stardom, she won the Artist of Stardom championship twice and won the 2019 5 Star GP tournament. She also competed in the first ever Stardom match at the Tokyo Dome. On January 4, 2020, she teamed with Giulia to take on Mayu Iwatami and Arisa Hoshiki.

New Japan Road results: Takashi Iizuka retirement match

NJPW ran Tokyo’s Korakuen Hall today with a New Japan Road event, featuring Takashi Iizuka’s retirement match.

The match itself was nothing special. The circus surrounding it and the cast of characters that faced off in the bout was pro wrestling at its wackiest. The undercard featured the return of Tomohiro Ishii, Yuji Nagata, Hirooki Goto, Will Ospreay, and Killer Elite Squad, all who took time off on the last tour.

The show was the first of three consecutive nights at Korakuen. Friday and Saturday’s events are joint cards with Ring of Honor, branded Honor Rising.

TAIJI ISHIMORI & ROBBIE EAGLES DEFEATED JUSHIN LIGER & YUYA UEMURA (7:49)

Ishimori will defend his IWGP Jr. Heavyweight title against Liger at the anniversary show on March 6, so the focus was placed on them here. Liger looked good, while Ishimori only did a fraction of what he usually does.

Liger earned a quick one count, then used a camel clutch. Ishimori reached the ropes, and both tagged out. Eagles used a lariat on Uemura, and tagged Ishimori. Ishimori cranked on Uemura’s neck. Uemura missed with one dropkick attempt, but hit it on a second attempt.

Liger and Ishimori continued brawling after the match, with Liger getting the upper hand.

TIGER MASK, TOA HENARE, TOMOAKI HONMA & TOGI MAKABE DEFEATED SATOSHI KOJIMA, MANABU NAKANISHI, REN NARITA & YOTA TSUJI (11:36)

A rare win for Henare. Not much to the match.

Makabe and Tsuji began. Tsuji took Makabe off his feet with a tackle. Tiger and Narita tagged in. Tiger gave Narita a good bit of offense, before connecting with some strikes. Honma came in and used a back elbow for a two count, with Nakanishi jumping in to break up the pinfall.

Henare got a tag and continued the beatdown on Narita. Makabe did the same. It looked like Narita got a bloody lip here. Honma came in and Narita hit a dropkick, enabling him to tag Kojima.

Kojima hit machine gun chops on Honma, then hit a top rope elbow for a two count. Kojima hit a Koji cutter. He teased a brainbuster, but Honma reversed it into one of his own. Nakanishi jumped in and speared Honma, then hit a lariat. Nakanishi and Kojima doubled up on Honma.

TOMOHIRO ISHII & YOSHI-HASHI DEFEATED YUJI NAGATA & SHOTA UMINO (13:45)

This was great when Nagata and Ishii were in together. That looks to be a program going forward.

It’s clear that YOSHI-HASHI has taken a step back since returning from injury this year. His offense doesn’t look crisp at all. Ishii and Nagata began and had a great striking exchange. Ishii’s intensity may be unmatched in the entire business. Ishii escaped an armbar attempt.

Umino and YH tagged in and had a forgettable sequence. Ishii jumped in and used a half crab, but Nagata entered to break it up. Ishii and Nagata brawled on the floor, with Ishii getting the upper hand. Back inside, Ishii hit a brainbuster on Umino for a nearfall.

Ishii and Nagata went after each other after the bell, trading chops.

SHO & YOH DEFEATED EL DESPERADO & YOSHINOBU KANEMARU (12:12)

This was pretty good. SHO and YOH are getting the next Jr. Heavyweight tag title shot, so the booking here made sense, with the number one contenders getting the win. The post-match was better than the match itself, though.

3K hit tandem dropkicks right away, establishing the early advantage. Despy and Kanemaru turned it into a brawl, and took control. They fought into the crowd. SHO ate a dropkick to the head on the apron. Kanemaru and Desperado worked over SHO’s head and neck with kicks and a neckbreaker.

Kanemaru used a lariat and an inverted DDT for a two count. Kanemaru used a camel clutch. YOH jumped in to break up the hold, but Desperado tossed him to the floor. Desperado hit two slams. SHO hit a suplex, then a spear, and made a tag.

YOH hit a flying forearm and a kip up. YOH caught a kick and Desperado dropped into the splits. YOH hit a low dropkick for a nearfall. Desperado came back with a spinebuster, and tagged Kanemaru. YOH hit a dragon screw on Kanemaru, then made a tag. SHO hit a pair of lariats, but Kanemaru hit an enziguri. Desperado speared SHO. Kanemaru missed with whiskey mist, and SHO hit a lariat. YOH took Desperado out with a pescado, then jumped back into the ring to help SHO hit the 3K on Kanemaru. SHO got the pin.

Shingo Takagi and BUSHI came out after the match and confronted 3K. YOH dared them to get in the ring, which they did. Shingo laid them out with pumping bombers.

HIROOKI GOTO & RYUSUKE TAGUCHI DEFEATED ZACK SABRE JR. & TAKA MICHINOKU (10:55)

Goto and Sabre exchanged holds to a stalemate. They locked knuckles, and traded the advantage. This was a showcase for Sabre. Goto broke the hold and used a tackle. Both tagged out.

TAKA and Taguchi did some comedy. TAKA used an eye poke. Taguchi hit a hip attack on TAKA. Goto came in and held TAKA. Taguchi nailed Goto with a hip attack as TAKA ducked out of the way. Goto hit Taguchi with a lariat by mistake as Sabre ducked out of the way.

Sabre worked over Taguchi, hitting a series of uppercuts to the butt. Sabre used a bow and arrow hold, then used it to pick up a two count. TAKA made a tag and went for a crossface, but Taguchi reached the ropes. TAKA hit a pair of knee strikes for a pair of nearfalls.

Taguchi and TAKA exchanged enziguris. Taguchi went for dodon, but TAKA rolled through. Taguchi then rolled through that, and pinned TAKA.

HIROSHI TANAHASHI & WILL OSPREAY DEFEATED LANCE ARCHER & DAVEY BOY SMITH JR. (12:47)

Smith’s tan was absurd. Smith and Archer took the bulk of the match, and looked good. Ospreay’s selling was quite good here. Tanahashi didn’t do much.

Tana and Archer kicked things off. Archer took Tana off his feet with a tackle, then stomped on his lower back. Smith and Ospreay got tags. Smith showed great agility for his size. Archer jumped in for the illegal double team, and Killer Elite Squad took over.

Archer got a tag and hit Ospreay with a pounce. Archer connected with some hard strikes. Smith got a tag and used a delayed vertical suplex for a nearfall. Tanahashi came in to break it up. KAZUCHIKA OKADA, TORU YANO & HIROYOSHI TENZAN DEFEATED TAKASHI IIZUKA, MINORU SUZUKI & TAICHI (22:11)

Shinpei Nogami came to the announce desk to announce Iizuka’s final match. Of course, Iizuka attacked him and tore his shirt off.

Tenzan again appealed to Iizuka to remember their friendship before the match, but Iizuka jumped him, as Suzuki-gun attacked before the bell.

The match began with Iizuka and Tenzan in the ring. Tenzan hit Mongolian chops. Yano got a tag and pulled on Iizuka’s beard. Iizuka choked Yano. Tenzan raked Iizuka’s eyes. Okada got a tag and hit a slingshot senton. Tenzan tagged in and chopped away at Iizuka. Suzuki cut him off, applying an armbar over the ropes. The match spilled to the floor. Taichi got a tag and hit Mongolian chops on Tenzan, which the crowd hated. Tenzan hit a mountain bomb, then tagged Yano. Yano untied a corner pad. Taichi hit Yano with the pad. Iizuka bit Okada’s foot. He attempted to use a length of rope to choke Okada, but Okada ducked it and hit an air raid crash. Okada hit a top rope elbow. He teased a rainmaker and a dropkick, but Iizuka evaded both. Iizuka used a sleeper, but Okada escaped. Iizuka ducked a rainmaker, but Okada hit a dropkick. Iizuka applied a kneebar, while Suzuki took Tenzan to the floor with an armbar. Okada sold this for all it was worth before reaching the ropes.

Okada hit a DVD, then tagged Tenzan. Tenzan cleared the apron, then hit chops on Iizuka. Tenzan hit a clothesline in the corner, then a brainbuster. Iizuka hit an inverted atomic drop, and Suzuki-gun jumped in for a triple team. Iizuka used a sleeper on Tenzan, but Yano broke up the hold. Taichi took the referee. Iizuka grabbed the iron fingers. After the match, the crowd chanted for Iizuka. Iizuka sold being conflicted. Tenzan offered a handshake, and Iizuka finally accepted it. The feel-good moment was short-lived. Iizuka then bit Tenzan, and hit him with a chair. All of Suzuki-gun entered and held up Tenzan. Iizuka used the iron fingers on Tenzan. Iizuka wandered off through the crowd. Taichi picked up Iizuka’s iron fingers and teased putting them on, which got a reaction.

The crowd continued cheering and chanting for Iizuka for several minutes after Taichi exited, hoping for an encore appearance, but there was none.

Akira Tozawa heading to Fight Club: PRO’s Japan event

Akira Tozawa is coming to Fight Club: PRO.

The promotion announced today that the 205 Live star will be making an appearance for the promotions Project Tokyo event at Korakuen Hall on January 7. It wasn’t made clear who he would be facing.

Fight Club: PRO made the announcement on their Twitter this morning. Drave Maverick retweeted their tweet, saying he made the arrangement to loan Tozawa to FCP for the event.

This comes after a number of NXT UK talent were pulled from the show, including British Strong Style, Jordan Devlin and Travis Banks. NXT UK talent have signed new contracts in recent weeks that have put even more restrictions on where they can work. One of the new restrictions also bars wrestlers from competing on a show one week out before a NXT UK taping, and there will in fact be a taping that following weekend.

Tozawa has wrestled infrequently this year as he hasn’t been focused much on 205 Live and the brand doesn’t tour. In recent weeks, however, he has been teaming with Brian Kendrick feuding against Drew Gulak and Jack Gallagher.

NJPW Road to Destruction results: Golden Lovers vs. Ishii and Ospreay

New Japan’s first broadcast following the G1 finals took place this morning at Korakuen Hall, building to the first of three big Destruction events on 9/15. Here are this morning’s results from Korakuen Hall:

Chase Owens and Yujiro Takahashi defeated Shota Umino and Ren Narita

Owens and Yujiro now have matching ring jackets. This was a pretty good opener, since as usual people are into the young lions getting the hot nearfalls. Umino and Narita have noticeably improved and their timing is excellent. Owens cut off Narita with a superkick to score the win for his team.

Tama Tonga, Tanga Loa, Bad Luck Fale and Taiji Ishimori defeated Juice Robinson, David Finlay, Michael Elgin and Ayato Yoshida

Heels got the heat on Finlay, making multiple tags to continue the beatdown. Juice got the hot tag, cleaned house for a bit and tagged in Yoshida, who got big reactions. After a spot where everyone got involved, Loa kicked out of a roll up attempt, cut off Yoshida and pinned him with the sitout piledriver.

Beretta defeated Toa Henare

Beretta started off slow early, though kept control. Henare cut him off started to mount a comeback. Beretta struck with a big time dropkick that sent him to the floor. He connected with a running knee strike, but Henare kicked out.

Henare tried to build aomw, but Beretta cut him off and connected with the dudebuster for the win. Straightforward, pretty sold match. Never went past a certain level but did a good job in giving Beretta a win following his return from injury.

Hirooki Goto and Gedo defeated Taichi and Taka Michinoku

Taichi flipped off President Harold Meij as he made his way to the ring. I don’t think that’s how you make a good first impression.

Taichi and Goto brawled everywhere. They go towards the entrance where Taichi blasts Goto with a chair to the face. Meanwhile in the ring, both Taichi and Taka got the heat on Gedo. Goto eventually got the tag as he and Taichi exchanged some hot offense.

Goto went for the GTR on Taka buch Taichi cut him off with a dropkick. With the help of Gedo, Goto warded him off then successfully hit the GTR on Taka for the win.

Tetsuya Naito, EVIL, SANADA and BUSHI defeated Minoru Suzuki, Takashi Iizuka, Yoshinobu Kanemaru and El Desperado

Suzuki and Naito immediately started to brawl, and what do you know, a Suzuki-gun match starts with everyone brawling out of the ring.

Suzuki worked a lot on Naito during this match, mainly focusing on one of Naito’s arms, which will likely play a role in their future match. Iizuka came in and bit Naito in the forehead, causing him to bleed.

Other members of LIJ came in. SANADA tried for the paradise lock. EVIL got choked by Iizuka’s wrestler tape, but dodged the iron fingers of death. Kanemaru came in and broke up the Magic Killer attempt. Iizuka started biting again, but EVIL cut him off and connected with the Magic Killer for the win.

Suzuki wasted no time in jumping Naito after the bell, but Naito fired back and sent Suzuki-gun packing.

Kazuchika Okada, Toru Yano and YOSHI-HASHI defeated Hiroshi Tanahashi, Tomoaki Honma and Togi Makabe

This is Honma’s first match back at Korakuen Hall since his return from injury.

Tanahashi and Okada started things off. It went to Honma and YOSHi-HASHI, who worked together a lot during this match. Yano and Makabe, of course, paired off with one another as well.

The finish winded up being between Toru Yano and Tomoaki Honma. The latter connected with a rocket kokeshi, but Yano saw an opportunity and low blowed him, then rolled him up for the win. Kind of just a match, nothing bad about it but extremely formulaic.

The Golden Lovers defeated Tomohiro Ishii and Will Ospreay

Ibushi and Ospreay started off hot, going at an extremely quick pace. Ishii and Omega went at it for a bit, but then got out by the Golden Lovers’ tandem offense. Ishii fires back as he Omega go at it for a while, with both laying into one another with some stiff shots.

Ospreay and Omega also went at it for a bit, with the former connecting with a neckbreaker and a shooting star press. But a lot of this was the usual pairing off. Ibushi and Ospreay were in at one point and started exchanging some strikes. Thanks to a knee strike by Omega, Ibushi grabbed Ospreay on the apron and hit the deadlift German suplex in an amazing spot.

The Golden Lovers regrouped and connected with a giant kamigoye on Ospreay for the win. A fun, fast paced main event.

Omega cut a promo in Japanese to close out the show, asking Ibushi if he wanted to face Ospreay someday. He said yeah, kinda. Omega mentioned Ospreay would need to win the junior title a few more times before graduating.
