WOL Saturday: New court documents focus more on Vince McMahon’s alleged misconduct than valuation & revenue

It’s the Saturday Wrestling Observer Live with Jim Valley.

Are Janel Grant and her accusations ultimately responsible for the TKO merger of Zuffa and WWE? That appears to be at the heart of the case made by the plaintiffs in the WWE shareholders’ lawsuit. Documents made public for the first time offer insight into events surrounding the merger and the opening arguments for attorneys representing WWE shareholders.

While the trial that was scheduled to start Monday is now off the calendar, thousands of pages of depositions, text conversations, and other documents unsealed before trial offer a window into how the deal allegedly came together.

On this episode, I will try to explain why the lawsuit is, or was, about more about behavior than numbers, stocks and balance sheets.

Janel Grant launches IG account ‘in service of the broader conversation’

Janel Grant is continuing to put herself out in the public more as her lawsuit against Vince McMahon and WWE for alleged sexual assault and trafficking continues, launching an Instagram account Tuesday.

In her bio, she wrote that “I am still surviving, still advocating, still persevering through each day…and I’m still showing up to be part of the solution.”

Grant’s first posts were images of her correspondence with the FBI over the last three years which included pamphlets for those who are victims of crime. She is doing so in support of Raised S.B. 355, which is a bill before the Connecticut General Assembly for the purpose of prohibiting the use of nondisclosure agreements in certain instances in the workplace.

Her signing of a nondisclosure agreement in January 2022 with McMahon is what his side is arguing should bring her lawsuit to arbitration as the agreement states. On June 10, a judge will rule on the language of the agreement, whether it’s valid, and how things should proceed if that is the case.

She wrote the following (transcription courtesy of Post Wrestling) in her first posts:

“This is the first letter I got from the FBI. I got these letters between May 2023 and December 2025. I never thought I’d get a letter like this, much less years of them.

Ahead of the vote in CT on Raised Bill S.B. 355, I believe it’s important to share this letter in service of the broader conversation. When the lack of NDA policy is the status quo, I believe this letter will help others see and understand the real-life impact of that baseline.

The evolution of doing business led to a destination point where a company’s public announcement of an internal investigation, during the summer of 2022, was followed by the launch of a federal investigation related to “hush money payments” made from 2006 through 2022 (per Wall Street Journal)

If the Feds reached out to interview any former/current employees and reviewed their evidence, what would that reveal about culture, use of power, treatment of people, and the status quo in practice?

As reflected in Wall Street Journal reporting, federal agents executed a search warrant and delivered a subpoena in the summer of 2023 for documents related to any allegation of “rape, sex trafficking, sexual assault, commercial sex transaction, harassment or discrimination against current or former employees” of this company. That reporting also notes that multiple names appeared in a grand jury subpoena in connection with settlement agreements related to allegations of sexual misconduct including mine. The article dated February 2, 2024 speaks for itself.

This is why I received letters like this – and why I continued to receive them up until a few months ago. The status quo in practice is how we arrived here. This is our starting line ahead of the vote on Raised Bill S.B. 355.

As the right people are meeting at the right time ahead of this vote, I hope this helps bring clarity and supports productive, dignified conversations that lead to solutions.

ESPN reporter who covered Janel Grant says WWE denied WrestleMania credentials

An ESPN reporter says WWE has blocked his access for WrestleMania 42.

Andreas Hale, who has covered the Janel Grant lawsuit against WWE and Vince McMahon for ESPN, as well as published letter-grade reviews of WWE PLEs, revealed the news on Saturday.

He posted to social media that he will not be covering WrestleMania for ESPN, saying WWE denied his credentials and blocked his access. Hale said neither he nor ESPN has been told why.

Hale wrote:

“I will not be covering #WrestleMania for ESPN.

WWE denied my credentials and blocked my access.

Neither I nor ESPN has been told why.

You can speculate on the reasons, but if you want answers, ask WWE.

Let me know what they tell you.”

On April 2, Hale published an ESPN story on the Janel Grant lawsuit against WWE and Vince McMahon, noting he had reached out to WWE for comment but did not hear back. Hale also covered the story when it was first filed in January 2024.

Hale has also written WWE PLE review pieces for ESPN using letter grades. He gave the September 2025 Wrestlepalooza event a C.

Hale’s post is below:

John Laurinaitis’ lawyer responds to Janel Grant court filing

A lawyer representing former WWE executive John Laurinaitis has commented on the latest court filings in Janel Grant’s lawsuit against WWE and Vince McMahon.

Laurinaitis was originally named as a co-defendant in the lawsuit, but the claims against him were voluntarily dismissed in May 2025 after he agreed to cooperate and provide evidence for Grant’s side.

On April 1, Grant’s team filed a memorandum opposing motions by WWE and McMahon to move the case to private arbitration rather than keep it in public court. In the filing, Grant referenced several incidents during her time at WWE in which she alleges she was forced into sexual situations with Laurinaitis.

Edward M. Brennan, Laurinaitis’ attorney, provided the following statement to Post Wrestling:

“My client has no need to comment on this salacious affidavit,” Brennan said on behalf of Laurinaitis. “Anyone can make allegations. Whether those allegations can withstand the harsh sunlight of cross-examination is another matter entirely.”

Brennan added: “I note that after two-plus years of litigation, Mr. Laurinaitis remains the only party exonerated by an independent investigation commissioned by the WWE Board of Directors to review these matters and the only person dismissed, with prejudice, from this lawsuit. Those facts speak louder than any allegations made to buttress a suspect claim.”

Grant’s full memorandum from April 1 is available here.

Janel Grant filings reveal new details on Vince McMahon allegations

New details regarding Janel Grant’s lawsuit against WWE and Vince McMahon have come to light in recent court filings.

Grant filed a memorandum Wednesday opposing motions by WWE and McMahon to compel arbitration and move the case out of court. Her lawyers argue that the NDA she signed was unenforceable and should not prevent her from pursuing the case in a public court rather than through private arbitration.

In filings dated April 1, Grant states that McMahon told her he had informed WWE president Nick Khan and former company COO Brad Blum of the nature of his relationship with her in March 2021.

Paragraph 41 of Grant’s declaration on April 1 reads:

“Vince then informed me that he had spoken privately with Nick Khan and Brad Blum during which he formally disclosed the sexual nature of his relationship with me. He said they expressed concern and one questioned whether I could be trusted. Vince told me he provided them with assurances about my loyalty, character, that I would never do something to hurt WWE, and that I ‘would sooner jump off the balcony than hurt anyone.’ He told me that, with these assurances, Nick and Brad were ultimately supportive.”

Blum resigned from WWE in May 2024.

Grant also contends that McMahon told her former WWE general counsel Brad Nurse had raised concerns about the relationship and that it was “handled,” which she understood to mean he was terminated.

Paragraph 43 of Grant’s declaration on April 1 reads:

“Vince revealed that he and WWE leadership determined that I was a corporate liability. He then told me that they needed me to leave the legal department immediately as my presence had affected their ability to hire a new General Counsel.

To explain this, he revealed that the former General Counsel, Brian Nurse, had highly suspected or knew about Vince’s sexual relationship with me, and he brought it to the attention of Vince’s office during a meeting with Brad. As a result, Vince then flicked his wrist and stated it was ‘handled.

I understood this to mean that the General Counsel had identified Vince’s conduct with me as a liability to the Executive Office and was subsequently terminated.”

Brian Nurse was hired as WWE’s General Counsel in 2018. He was listed as “WWE Corporate Officer No. 4” in Grant’s original lawsuit filed in January 2024. He was released from the company in November 2020.

A link to Grant’s full declaration from April 1 is available on Courtlistener here.

Judge rules Dr. Carlon Colker’s lawsuit against Janel Grant’s attorney can continue

A Connecticut judge has ruled that a lawsuit filed by Vince McMahon’s doctor against Janel Grant’s attorney will be allowed to continue.

Brandon Thurston of Post Wrestling has written a lengthy, detailed story on the latest developments. Ann Callis, the attorney who is representing Grant in her lawsuit, and her law firm, Holland Law. Callis had filed a motion to have Colker’s suit against her dismissed, but Judge Sarah F. Russell ruled on Friday that Colker’s case against Callis will continue.

“Russell, who is also presiding over Grant’s lawsuit against WWE and Vince McMahon, was unconvinced by arguments from the Callis side that Colker is a public figure,” Thurston writes. “The defendants’ motion to dismiss the case at this phase largely hinged on their argument that the doctor, and his clinic by association, were public figures.”

“Individuals and entities that courts determine are public figures generally face a higher burden of proof in defamation cases,” Thurston continues. “They need to show the defendant acted with ‘actual malice,’ meaning the defendant knew the statement was false or acted with reckless disregard for its truth or falsity. Private figures, on the other hand, generally only need to show that the defendant made a false and damaging statement.”

In October of 2024, Callis said on a press call and in a press release that Colker “violated ethical and medical standards when he injected unknown substances into Janel’s body and directed her to take unlabeled pills while dismissing her basic questions about those drugs.”

Thurston explains that those comments would be protected had they been made in judicial proceedings. “Callis’ public statements made to the press, outside of a strictly legal setting, don’t benefit from the same protection,” he writes.

The lawsuit between Grant and McMahon has continued as the judge in the case is determining whether or not the case will go into arbitration.

Janel Grant says WWE never responded to police after intimidation report

Janel Grant and her attorney testified before the Connecticut Labor and Public Employees Committee on Monday, March 2.

Grant and attorney Erica Nolan urged lawmakers to pass legislation that would prevent the use of workplace NDAs to silence victims of misconduct.

During her testimony, Grant said she filed a police report within the past week due to online intimidation tactics that she believed could have jeopardized her safety. She said police took a report and contacted WWE regarding the matter. Grant added that the police report notes WWE never responded to the officer’s call.

Grant said:

“This past week alone, I filed a police report because I noticed some intimidation tactics online playing out that were potentially going to pose a threat and jeopardize my safety in some way that I could not ignore. I called the police. They took a report. The officer reached out to WWE and to the state. When I got the report yesterday, WWE did not return the police officer’s phone call.”

This is the second time in recent weeks that Grant has made a public appearance to address the issue of workplace NDAs. Last month, she appeared at a Capitol news briefing hosted by the Connecticut Alliance to End Sexual Violence. During that event, she spoke about the impact the NDA at the center of her lawsuit against WWE and Vince McMahon has had on her.

Grant’s attorney also spoke at Monday’s briefing, addressing the intimidation and retaliation Grant has faced.

“For someone bound by an NDA, intimidation does not have to be loud or obvious – it can be as simple as a letter from a lawyer reminding a victim of what they signed,” Nolan testified. “In Ms. Grant’s case, however, the intimidation has been both loud and obvious. She has faced public retaliation, exposure of her personal information, witness intimidation, and even public mockery on national television of what she experienced.”

“This is not about punishing employers; it is about protecting workers here in Connecticut,” Nolan continued. “NDAs are often framed as neutral tools, but when used in cases involving misconduct, they function primarily to protect the employer, not the employee.”

Grant and Nolan’s testimony begins around the 15-minute and 25-second mark of the video below. A link to the press release from Hurwitz Sagarin & Slossberg is available here.

Friday Update

CMLL logo

— Our Friday show with Garett Gonzales talked El Santo, WrestleMania ticket sales in perspective, the Great Mephisto’s history with Roy Shire, AEW Revolution, Arena Mexico and lots of awards talk. Garett and I will be back Sunday night this week with Smackdown, Collision, New Japan and other notes.

— Thanks for all the nice feedback on the Great Mephisto story in today’s issue. The San Francisco run was legendary as well the booking in Australia.

— Janel Grant spoke in public for the first time today at an event to support NDA’s from being used when comes to sexual abuse cases. We talked about this on the show today. She was very nervous and spoke vaguely, with almost no details on her case past mentioning the name Vince McMahon a few times.

  • She said it was a series of miracles that she’s even alive today and talked about consdiering suicide
  • She indicated suffering and saying she probably left her house ten days last year.
  • She said that she was willing to speak in the investigation of Vince McMahon by the WWE Board of Directors but they did not talk to her
  • She said WWE contacted her and asked her to make a statement that her relationship with Vince McMahon was consensual and indicated being offered money to say that and she refused. She said the company then said it was a consensual relationship. She said when they know one party would not say it was consensual, that’s a hell of an announcement to make.
  • She noted that she turned over all her evidence to the Department of Justice. In the end, the DOJ did not use it nor ask for any indictments.
  • She acknowledged the love letter that it was claimed she wrote to Vince McMahon that WWE or McMahon’s reps sent to the New York Post. She called it public humiliation and intimidation of a person as well as witness intimidation. She did not address whether the letter was real or the big question of if she wrote it on her own or McMahon asked her to do so.
  • She was upset by the Liv Morgan angle that was taken from her case and said that they used her case to do an angle every Monday night.

— NXT on Tuesday did 744,000 viewers and an 0.09 in 18-49. We’ll have more details. Viewership was way up against the Olympics but that was a very low 18-49 number for so many viewers, which raises a red flag. It did much better than usual in 18-34. It was last among all networks on Tuesday.

— I don’t expect an AEW rating until Monday for the Wednesday Dynamite show. Everything was moved back a day due to the Monday holiday.

— The Royal Rumble from this year will air at 8 p.m. Eastern on Sunday on ESPN. The show will be edited down.

— Conor Benn of Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing has been signed by Zuffa Boxing. This is like 1984 in pro wrestling. Benn is 24-1 with 14 knockouts and is coming off a win over Chris Eubanks Jr. in November, avenging his only career loss. He was one of Matchroom’s top guys. To show how bad they wanted to get him, he signed only a one-fight deal, reported to be for eight figures.

— One of my friends in the Chicago wrestling scene noted to me that he paid $1,450 for tickets to ten Bulls games on his package which includes games with the Warriors and Lakers. In the exact same seat that his Bulls tickets are, it would cost him $684 for Elimination Chamber. The person earns a good living and is a huge pro wrestling fan. He’s not going to the show.

— ESPN 2 will be airing a 2K26 ratings reveal special on ESPN 2 on 2/27 at 2 p.m.

— Jake Paul will have to undergo further surgery related to the broken jaw he suffered in the fight with Anthony Joshua. This second surgery is because screws and plates from the first surgery are coming loose.

— Impact on Thursday has:

  • Mike Santana & Leon Slater vs. The Nemeth Brothers
  • Hardys & Righteous vs. The System
  • Lei Ying Lee vs. Dani Luna
  • AJ Francis vs. Mance Warner
  • Jada Stone vs. Tasha Steelz
  • Plus Mickie James will have a confrontation with Ash by Elegance

— With all the top stars in Japan, tonight’s Arena Mexico show is built around six first-round matches in the Torneo de Escuelas tag team tournament. This is for wrestling students who are unknowns and becomes the first look most people have of them:

  • Conquistador & Divino Dragon (students of Ultimo Dragoncito) vs. Pantera Jr. & Psycotic (students of Rey Cometa & Pantera from Queretaro)
  • Cerebero Negro Jr. & Dominic (students of Virus) vs. Kimba & Tenochca (students of Volador Jr.)
  • Camaleon Jr. & Karma I (students of Tony Salazar) vs. Black Warrior Jr. & Makara (students of El Satanico from Guadalajara)
  • Diamante Escarlata & Magnetico (students of El Hijo del Gladiador) vs. Estudiante Jr. & Feroz (students of Ultimo Guerrero)
  • Konjuro & Sombra Diabolka Jr. (students of Black Tiger from Puebla) vs. King Rex & Prometeo (team from Saltillo)
  • Rey Pegasus & Tornado (students of Magia Blanca) vs. Engendro & Jay Ortega (team from Monterrey)
  • Araki & KIira & Catalina vs. Dark Silueta & Olympia & Persephone
  • Josh Alexander vs. Esfinge for the MLP title
  • Johnny Consejo (Johnny TV) vs Angel De Oro vs. Neon vs. Daniel Garcia

— Saturday at Arena Coliseo has Volador Jr. vs. Consejo vs. Cavernario and Angel de Oro vs. Garcia.

— Sunday at Arena Mexico has Flip Gordon & Neon vs. Cavernario & Garcia and Esfinge vs. Consejo.

— Garcia has apparently been training this week at the CMLL school while in Mexico.

— Shayna Baszler has been helping out part-time with training and sometimes producing in Orlando for NXT. It’s not a full-time gig. She’s been producing Evolve matches. Ace Steel is there coaching this week. They bring people in part-time regularly.

— Fantastica Mania live on New Japan World at 2 a.m. Eastern tomorrow night (11 p.m. Pacific shorty after UFC ends) from Osaka

  • Tatsuya Matsumoto & Tiger Mask vs. El Hijo de Stuka Jr. & Shoma Katio
  • Okumura & Satoshi Kojima & Ultimo Guerrero vs. Sho & Yoshinobu Kanemaru & Yujiro Takahashi
  • El Desperado & Masatora Yasuda & Master Wato & Ryusuke Taguchi & Stigma vs. Bone Soldier Jr. (Taiji Ishimori) & Yota Tsuji & Titan & Shingo Takagi & Daiki Nagai
  • Atlantis & Atlantis Jr. vs. Averno & Mangus in tag tournament semifinals
  • Mistico & Mascara Dorada vs. Valiente Jr. & Futuro in tag tournament semifinal

The main event is really interesting. Valiente Jr. & Futuro rarely get big show main events so you think they’ll go all out. They are young, very talented guys.

— An update from today’s issue, the Rey Misterio (uncle of current Rey Mysterio) PBS documentary in Southern California apparently has already aired there.

— UFC is back at 5 p.m. Eastern with a show on Paramount

  • Juliana Miller (126) vs. Carli Judice (125)
  • Jordan Leavitt (145.5) vs. Yadier del Valle (145.5)
  • Phil Rowe (170.5) vs. Jean-Paul Lebosnoyani (170.5)
  • Ramiz Brahimaj (170.5) vs. Punalele Soriano (171)
  • Nora Cornolle (136) vs. Joselyn Edwards (135.5)
  • Aiden Coria (125.5) vs. Luis Gurule (125)
  • Ode Osbourne (126) vs. Alibi Idris (126)
  • Chidi Njokuani (171) vs. Carlos Leal (170)
  • Zachary Reese (185.5) vs. Michel Pereira (186
  • Jacobe Smith (171) vs. Josiah Harrell (171)
  • Serghei Spivac (251.5) vs. Ante Delija (239)
  • Dan Ige (145.5) vs. Milquizael Costa (145.5)
  • Goeff Neal (170.5) vs. Usos Medic (171)
  • Sean Strickland (185) vs. Anthony Hernandez (186)

— The online debate over Dusty Rhodes vs Seth Rollins and who was better in the ring is very funny, because when Rollins was in WWE developmental, Rhodes said he was already the best wrestler in all of WWE to me (this would have been shortly after the death of Randy Savage when we had a long talk mostly about Savage but he very excitedly told me about this guy who was even better than Savage that nobody knows about, although I’d been watching NXT so knew about him and obviously did from his Tyler Black days for years). He definitely had qualms about things and wasn’t sure if he’d make it because of those reasons, but raved about him in the ring.

— Nic Nemeth appears for AIQ on 3/20 in Cleveland at the Globe Iron.

— This is quite the day in history. Buddy Rogers was born on this day in 1921, one of the all-time greats. Antonio Inoki was born on this day in 1943. Gedo turned 57 today. Gail Kim turned 49. Big Damo turned 41. Bobby Shane was 29 when he passed away on this day 51 years ago in a famous plane crash in Florida. Ciclon Negro was 80 when he passed away on this day 13 years ago. Dean Higuchi, a bodybuilder and powerlifter was 80 when he passed away on this day five years ago. Pirata Morgan had his first match 47 years ago today.

Janel Grant details impact of NDA at Alliance to End Sexual Violence event

Janel Grant made a rare public appearance on Thursday at a Capitol news briefing hosted by the Connecticut Alliance to End Sexual Violence.

The event addressed the use of non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) in workplace misconduct cases and their impact on survivors. Grant spoke about the NDA at the center of her lawsuit against WWE and Vince McMahon, as well as the fallout from the June 2022 Wall Street Journal article that publicly named her in a report detailing allegations against McMahon.

“On June 15th of 2022, my life was rewritten into someone else’s storyline. And I was globally outed in the Wall Street Journal,” Grant said in her speech.

Grant said the situation took a severe toll on her mental health, including thoughts of self-harm.

“That is the life-wrecking and the mental health impact of this particular NDA.”

“The people and organizations that have supported me when I was the loneliest person on planet Earth, when my life got decimated in the Wall Street Journal, without them, I would not be here,” she continued.

Grant spoke about the impact NDAs can have on workplaces and how they can prevent survivors from speaking up.

“Workplace safety depends on transparency because when employees cannot speak, patterns can’t be seen. When patterns can’t be seen, they can’t be stopped. When they can’t be stopped, harm spreads.”

“When an NDA is used to conceal dangerous behavior, it simply relocates the harm to the next employee, the next office, the next victim.”

Grant said that after the initial Wall Street Journal report, WWE requested that she make a joint statement describing the relationship as consensual. She declined, but a WWE spokesperson later described it as consensual in the second Wall Street Journal article published the following month.

“So someone, a group maybe, behind my back, without my knowledge, without my input, made that decision for me, it’s consensual, we say so.”

She said she was permitted to participate in the company’s internal investigation, but that it concluded without interviewing her. Grant also said she was granted whistleblower status by the SEC as a federal criminal investigation into the allegations was underway.

“In March of 2023, I got two things from the SEC. I got a subpoena, and I got whistleblower status. A couple days after that, Vince McMahon and Ari Emanuel suddenly appeared on CNBC to announce a deal of Endeavor and WWE, so color me the most surprised person on planet Earth.”

Grant also mentioned that there had been a WWE storyline playing out on Raw for months that mirrored her situation, although she did not mention what storyline she was referring to.

“And in the summer of 2024, reporters and viewers noticed there were parallels between the storyline that unfolded for several months on television and my situation.”

Grant also said she did not want to file the civil suit because she understood the impact it would have on her life.

“I knew what I would be about to throw my life into, but I had been dragged in by this NDA into a federal investigation, the SEC, all the consequences, all the things that have happened that have made my life so small and isolated, I didn’t start that. It’s like it found me.”

Near the end of her speech, Grant sent a message to TKO leadership:

“To the board of TKO, if you didn’t know this part of your origin story, now you know. I hope you will have conversations with us. I will hope you have conversations amongst yourselves, and I hope that you don’t rely on old instincts with new insight.”

“All of you have some say in how my life turns out from here, including how quickly I may be able to move on and find help and healing.”

Video of the full event from Thursday is available below. Grant’s remarks begin at around the 10-minute and 30-second mark.
