Tony Khan on Chris Jericho: ‘We’ll see what happens here in the coming months’

Tony Khan talks Chris Jericho.

In an interview with Busted Open Radio, Khan was asked about Chris Jericho’s status with the company as reports indicate he may be looking at a WWE return. Khan said he’ll take a wait and see approach, but Jericho is always welcome in AEW.

“I love Chris Jericho. He’s a huge part of AEW, he’s been here since the beginning and, you know, we’ll see what happens here in the coming months,” he said. “Chris is always a welcome, big part of AEW we’d always want to have here. So I am absolutely so grateful to Chris Jericho for everything he’s done.”

Jericho hasn’t been seen on AEW television since April, abandoning Learning Tree stablemates Big Bill and Bryan Keith. Speculation has been mounting about his future, particularly this week when Jericho announced talent for his 2026 cruise which didn’t feature any AEW talent. In this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter, it was noted that Jericho is either heading to WWE or has people thinking he may return.

“He’s either going to WWE or he wants people to think he’s going to WWE to up his price from each side,” Meltzer wrote. “The idea is that Jericho is coming for a retirement tour and Hall of Fame induction. It also should be pointed out the cruise has nobody from WWE either but I don’t know that WWE would allow their talent to go even if he was with the company.”

Jericho last wrestled for the WWE in 2018. Before officially signing with AEW in 2019, he made appearances for New Japan Pro Wrestling, winning the IWGP Intercontinental title at one point.

Monday Update

  • Bryan and I will be back tonight talking about all the news from pro wrestling and MMA and there is a lot to talk about, including some very interesting numbers regarding Wednesday nights and cable in general.  If you have any questions regarding AEW and Wednesday night numbers, send to [email protected]
  • Raw is tonight in Greensboro.  Matches announced are Miz & R-Truth defending the tag titles against Finn Balor & JD McDonagh, Sami Zayn vs. Chad Gable non-title, plus matches in the King and Queen of the Ring tournament to determine the Raw reps in the finals with Iyo Sky vs. Lyra Valkyria and Gunther vs. Jey Uso.  There were 8,000 tickets out as of this morning.  The Coliseum is huge and even with a huge stage AEW was able to put well over 16,000 in for Sting’s retirement PPV, so this is actually only about a half house.  Which is still a good crowd.
  • We’re looking for reports from Greensboro tonight, with the Main Event matches, results and finishes and anything else notable off television to [email protected]
  • Rossy Ogawa’s Marigold Promotion made its debut early today at Korakuen Hall.  Results were:
  • Nanae Takahashi b Victoria Yuzuki
  • Miku Aono b Nao Ishikawa
  • Mirai b Chiaki
  • Naigsa Nozaki & Myla Grace d Mai Sakurai &  Zayda Steel
  • Kouki Amarei & Chika Goto b Natsumi Showzuki & Misa Matsui
  • Sareee & Bozilla  b Giulia & Utami Hayashishita when Sareee pinned Giulia.
  • This sets up a 7/13 show on PPV from Sumo Hall in Tokyo with Sareee vs Giulia as the main event.
  • We were told as a show this was very impressive.  One match wasn’t good at all while the main event was said to be excellent.
  • John Cena has signed an endorsement deal with Met-Rx, which was a really huge deal as a meal replacement pack a generation ago.  He will star in the company’s digital media campaign.
  • The Fantastica Mania show on 7/13 in San Jose promoted by New Japan, featuring CMLL stars, will be at Mt. Pleasant High School and not the Civic Auditorium.  The place holds maybe 1,000 and has been packed for Lucha Libre shows put on by Pro Wrestling Revolucion when they bring in top stars from Mexico in the post.  That’s also the high school Garrett Gonzales attended.
  • Very sad to hear about the death of Bad Bones John Klinger, who was one of the top stars in Germany, at the age of 40 earlier today.
  • Carlos Rodea Gomez, who wrestled for CMLL as Pequeno Nitro, passed away two weeks ago but the news just broke this past weekend. (thanks to The Cubs Fan)
  • A video on Tony Jones, whose funeral took place on Saturday in Daly City, CA:
  • Tony, best known for “Beyond the Mat,” was a real nice guy, always great to be around and his regular job at a law firm in Palo Alto where he worked as an IT.  His firm was recently voted the best place to work in Palo Alto and those there gave Jones a lot of the credit because of how much fun he was to be around every day.  We talked about Jones on last night’s show as Bryan and I were both friends of his.
  • Best of the Super Juniors has an A block show in Himeji tomorrow at 5:30 a.m.:
  • TJP vs. Kosei Fujita

  • Francesco Akira suffered a left knee injury and was pulled from tomorrow’s Best the Super Juniors show in Himeji.  He was set for a tag match.  He was to have a tournament match Wednesday and that’s up in the air.
  • MLW announced 1 Called Manders, Akira, Mr. Thomas, Brett Ryan Gosselin, Jake Crist and Josh Bishop in their 40 man Battle Riot on  6/1 at Center Stage in Atlanta.  They join names like Paul Walter Hauser, Matt Riddle, Ernest Miller, Mistico, Davey Boy Smith Jr. and Jimmy Yang in the match.

MLW Fusion results: Countdown to Fury Road

This episode was in memory of Terry Funk and Windham Rotunda.

Fusion this week was a special preview episode for the upcoming Alex Kane vs. Willie Mack match at Fury Road. We had two previously aired matches plus special all-access looks into both challenger and champion. Rich Bocchini and Matt Striker announced the matches.

– The main take-home message from the countdown vignettes was the contrasting styles between Mack and Kane. The champion was training at the famous Big Bear gym in California and enjoyed private dining at his favorite restaurant, while the challenger was talking about his past struggles in and out of the ring.

– With three weeks to go until Fury Road, Kane told us about the previous trainers at the Big Bear Gym, including Mike Tyson and Oscar de la Hoya, and about how his win will be all about Bomaye. Mack took us around South Central Los Angeles and talked us through his upbringing and going into foster care.

Alex Kane defeated Alex Hammerstone to win the MLW World Heavyweight title (taped and aired in July at Never Say Never)

This was the main event of the last live MLW special event, and if we get a main event as good as it this weekend we will be in for a special night.

The story that developed was Kane had the mat game advantage over the larger champion and also had the growing crowd support, even though he had been presented as a heel in the build. Hammerstone had the power advantage when it came to brute strength.

Kane brought out an array of suplexes here and continued to try to lock in his choke finisher but his early attempts were refuted by the champion. Later, Kane brought out his brawling side and had good momentum building after a splash on the apron and some running strikes, but went back to his suplex roots to edge his way toward the title.

Hammerstone brought his own suplexes and displays of power by dropping Kane hard on the ring apron. He also fired up with his own Hogan-style comeback but turned it up more than usual to counteract the boos from the Philadelphia crowd. They especially loved Kane kicking out of Hammerstone’s Burning Hammer signature move.

Kane again went to a reverse choke to stop the champion, but Hammerstone eventually clawed himself to the ropes.

In the closing moments, they exchanged high-impact moves: Hammerstone hit a chokeslam, Kane hit his Kane Maker Angle slam, Hammerstone hit a superplex but Kane used the momentum to hit his own release suplex.

Hammerstone eventually hit the Nightmare Pendulum but Kane still had the wherewithal to roll to the outside. On returning to the ring, Kane kicked the ropes which hit Hammerstone low. Kane then hit a gut-wrench suplex from the top rope for a close two-count.

Hammerstone reversed another choke attempt with some German suplexes and a powerbomb. Mr. Thomas distracted Hammerstone briefly but we saw the go-to MLW spot where Kane accidentally collided with his partner on the apron.

Instead of this leading to the demise of the colliding partners, Kane reversed a Nightmare Pendulum and locked in another choke. Kane fell to his back and the champion had nowhere to go and had to tap out before he passed out.

– With two weeks to go until Fury Road, we saw Alex Kane and Mr. Thomas eating in an empty private restaurant thanks to the Bomaye Fight Club money man Don King. He taunted Mack about his weight, saying he is still eating the same garbage while Kane only eats the best.

– Mack responded by listing out how Kane has been handed everything and has a lot of people helping him along, such as his team and Don King especially.

– Don King’s associate gifted Kane a watch to keep up his championship lifestyle while Mack told us he trains by chasing his cats around the house but is a naturally gifted athlete.

Willie Mack defeated John Hennigan (w/ Sam Adonis) and Lio Rush in a triple threat match to become the number one contender to the MLW World Heavyweight title (Taped in April, aired in July)

This was great and fast-paced throughout.

Hennigan and Rush distracted Mack by forming an alliance on the outside, but the main reason was to let Sam Adonis distract Mack, which let both the heels jump him to start us off.

Their alliance lasted all of 30 seconds as Rush tried a sneaky roll-up once Mack was disposed of. Rush and Hennigan then had a parkour minute of dodges, feints, and reversals before Mack re-joined only to eat a springboard kick to the face from Hennigan. Mack then hit a Samoan drop to slow the frantic opening minutes down.

Rush hit a great poison-rana after reversing a gorilla press by Mack, but Mack came back with a pop-up forearm to the jaw. Later on, Rush hit his low dives through opposite sides of the ring, nearly sliding and ramming Mack into the front row in the process.

The finishing sequence had Mack send Rush out after a missed frog splash and a stunner. Hennigan then reversed a Mack stunner, Adonis interfered and grabbed the leg of Mack but Hennigan hit Adonis by accident which let Mack roll up Hennigan for the win and crown himself the new number one contender.

Looking back at how this kickstarted Mack’s push, Hennigan and Rush did really well to make him shine.

Orange Cassidy wins All-Atlantic title on AEW Dynamite

Orange Cassidy is the new AEW All-Atlantic Champion.

Cassidy defeated PAC on Wednesday’s AEW Dynamite. The finish saw PAC going to use the ring bell hammer, as he has done in recent weeks to earn victories. Danhausen, however, distracted PAC long enough for the referee to notice PAC had a hammer. The referee removed the hammer, but PAC managed to get another one. Before he could strike, Cassidy instead hit the orange punch, then connected with another to score his first championship in the company.

The show ended with the rest of Best Friends, Trent Beretta and Chuck Taylor, hugging Cassidy as confetti fell.

PAC had held the All-Atlantic Championship since June, defeating Miro, Aleister Black, and Clark Connors in a four-way match to determine the first-ever champion at AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door. During his run, PAC defended the championship overseas in Europe. He also successfully defended the title at AEW’s All Out Zero Hour preshow, defeating a returning Kip Sabian.

Matt Striker done with Impact Wrestling

Matt Striker is done with Impact Wrestling.

PWInsider confirmed this afternoon that Striker is done with the company. Striker posted, then deleted, a tweet confirming that he was no longer with Impact.

“I am disappointed that my time with #ImpactonAXSTV is done,” he wrote. “I REALLY enjoyed that locker room. Thanks for allowing me to tell your story. Thanks, everyone. Stay safe.”

Striker started announcing for Impact last January, where he and D’Lo Brown replaced Josh Mathews and Madison Rayne as the lead announce team starting with the 2021 edition of Hard to Kill. PWInsider reported that Brown is still expected to be part of the announce team going forward.

Striker has focused on commentary since 2008, joining the broadcast team of various WWE shows including ECW and SmackDown. After WWE opted not to renew his contract in 2013, he has called matches for various promotions including Lucha Underground, New Japan Pro Wrestling, and Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide.

NJPW Road to Power Struggle 10-23 results: Sydal, Ricochet and Tanahashi vs. Beretta, Rocky Romero and Kazuchika Okada

Welcome to this morning’s coverage of the NJPW Road to Power Struggle card, held in Saitama. This show is a fixed camera event with no commentary.

Tiger Mask and Jushin Liger defeated Sho Tanaka & Yohei Komatsu. Solid opener, just basic stuff. Tiger Mask pinned Komatsu with the Tiger Bomb. Very short.

reDragon defeated Jay White and Juice Robinson. Robison looked better here than he has in other outings thus far, he’s coming into his own here and the people were into him. reDragon took him out with a variation of the old Total Elimination move then pinned White with the Chasing the Dragon. This match had more time than the opener and was pretty solid.

Kenny Omega came out and introduced Chase Owens as the latest member of the Bullet Club. He came out sporting a beard and and new gear. Omega promised everyone would bow down to him, he’d rule the world, and so on. All I could really think about were nWo B-team comparisons during this promo. Not that he’s bad, because he’s better than most of the nWo B-squad but the Bullet Club feels kind of inflated enough at this point.

Kenny Omega, Chase Owens and the Young Bucks defeated Timesplitters, Ryusuke Taguchi and Mascara Dorada. Good match. Dorada again was a highlight, busting out a tope early. Omega almost planted him with the One Winged Angel but Dorada countered it into a DDT. The other three members gave their finishers to Dorada but his teammates broke it up. They isolated him again and Omega pinned him with the One Winged Angel.

Katsuyori Shibata & Hirooki Goto defeated Tama Tonga and Cody Hall. Pretty okay. Cody seems to be trying new things, which is cool, but the execution is still a bit sloppy. He went for the Razor’s Edge but Shibata countered in mid air to a sleeper, put him on the floor then pinned him after a Penalty Kick. Cool finish.

Tomoaki Honma & Togi Makabe defeated Gedo and Tomohiro Ishii. Just a match, nothing much to it. The build was mostly toward Ishii and Makabe’s title match at Power Struggle. Gedo held his own against Makabe for a bit, but ate a lariat and was pinned with the king kong knee drop.

Karl Anderson and Doc Gallows defeated Yoshi-Hashi and Toru Yano. It was a match you’d expect from these four. It was fine, but nothing memorable. Yoshi-Hashi did have some fire while making a comeback, and the crowd were into him a bit as well. Anderson pins him with a stun gun.

Hiroshi Tanahashi, Matt Sydal and Ricochet defeated Rocky Romero, Beretta and Kazuchika Okada. This was solid, but not as good as you’d think a match like this would be. Very standard tag team match with one or two cool moves in between. Tanahashi won with the high fly flow, pinning Beretta.

Tanahashi tuned up the usual air guitar and played to close out the show. It was fun while it lasted, but there really isn’t anything you need to go back and watch.
