GCW announces Hammerstein Ballroom event for January

Game Changer Wrestling is running a show at the Hammerstein Ballroom in January.

The company’s owner, Brett Lauderdale, appeared prior to the main event of tonight’s Fight Club event and showed a video of some of the company’s top stars, such as Joey Janela, Nick Gage, Matt Cardona, Allie Catch, and Effy talking about criticisms that have been thrown at them throughout their careers. The video then ended with the wrestlers standing in the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City, with a January 23, 2022 date being announced.

Lauderdale appeared earlier on the show to make the announcement, but Cardona arrived and told him to go away, as he was here to ruin the announcement. He then proceeded to win back the Internet title in a match where he put his GCW career on the line, defeating Effy.

GCW’s next show will take place tomorrow night at the Showboat Hotel in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Minoru Suzuki will face Joey Janela in the main event.

Minoru Suzuki vs. Jonathan Gresham set for GCW Highest in the Room

Minoru Suzuki’s upcoming tour of the United States is set to feature a match against Jonathan Gresham.

Game Changer Wrestling has announced that Suzuki vs. Gresham will take place at their “Highest in the Room” event at the Ukrainian Cultural Center in Los Angeles on Friday, September 17. The show will air live on Fite TV.

This will be the first-ever one-on-one meeting between Suzuki and Gresham.

Gresham is the current ROH Pure Champion.

In another first-time matchup, Suzuki will face Homicide at GCW’s “Get Lost Alot” at the Melrose Ballroom in Queens, New York on Friday, September 24.

Suzuki has also been announced for GCW shows at The Showboat Atlantic City in Atlantic City, New Jersey on Sunday, October 10 and the Ukrainian Cultural Center in Los Angeles on Saturday, October 23. The names of those events have yet to be announced.

In addition to his tour of indie matches, Suzuki is coming to the United States for September and October’s New Japan Strong tapings. The September tapings are taking place at the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland, Texas on Saturday, September 25 and Sunday, September 26. The October tapings are being held at the 2300 Arena in Philadelphia on Saturday, October 16 and Sunday, October 17.

Night one of the Texas tapings will feature Suzuki vs. Fred Rosser. Suzuki & Lance Archer will then face Tom Lawlor & Royce Isaacs in a tag team match the next night.

Minoru Suzuki returning to GCW for four shows

NJPW star Minoru Suzuki is coming to Game Changer Wrestling for four shows later this year.

It was announced on Thursday that Suzuki will make his return to GCW at the promotion’s Highest in the Room show at the Ukrainian Cultural Center in Los Angeles, California on Friday, September 17. He’ll also be in action at GCW’s Get Lost Alot in Queens, New York on Friday, September 24 and at two shows in October.

The full list of GCW shows that Suzuki is set for is available below. The names of the two October shows have yet to be announced.

  • Highest in the Room — Friday, September 17 (Ukrainian Cultural Center in Los Angeles, California)
  • Get Lost Alot — Friday, September 24 (Melrose Ballroom in Queens, New York)
  • To be announced — Sunday, October 10 (The Showboat Atlantic City in Atlantic City, New Jersey)
  • To be announced — Saturday, October 23 (Ukrainian Cultural Center in Los Angeles, California)

Suzuki has previously wrestled for GCW twice. He defeated Matt Riddle at Matt Riddle’s Bloodsport in April 2018. Suzuki and Josh Barnett then went to a time limit draw at Josh Barnett’s Bloodsport the following year.

Suzuki was supposed to face Orange Cassidy at Joey Janela’s Spring Break 4 in April 2020, but the match couldn’t happen due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Suzuki will also be appearing at NJPW’s Autumn Attack tapings for NJPW Strong on Saturday, September 25 and Sunday, September 26. The tapings are being held at the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland, Texas.

GCW announces revival of Jersey Championship Wrestling

Game Changer Wrestling has announced they have purchased the rights to Jersey Championship Wrestling, including the name and video library.

According to the press release, GCW promoter Brett Lauderdale will be reviving the JCW name with a relaunch event set for May 1 at the Showboat in Atlantic City, New Jersey. It will join GCW’s Ashes to Ashes event that will take place on the same day. Talent announcements will be made in the weeks prior to the event.

“GCW has developed a reputation for finding the ‘next’ big independent wrestling stars and introducing them to a national audience. This is something I am passionate about, and take a lot of pride in,” Lauderdale said in the press release. “Before GCW was GCW, it was JCW, and through its landmark event The Jersey J-Cup, numerous careers were made, changing the game for so many talented performers. As indie wrestling gears up for its return in 2021, I am proud to lead a team of motivated and passionate people that will bring JCW back and provide a platform for a generation of hungry young talents.”

Adam Abdalla, President of marketing agency Cultural Counsel and publisher of Orange Crush: The Journal of Art & Wrestling, will be partnering with Lauderdale on the revival.

Joey Janela vs. Elayna Black off GCW Fight Forever

What would have been a matchup between an AEW-contracted wrestler and a WWE-contracted wrestler will no longer be taking place at Game Changer Wrestling’s Fight Forever.

It was announced on Thursday that Joey Janela vs. Elayna Black is off GCW’s Fight Forever. Fight Forever is a 24-hour live stream of shows and a fundraiser for independent wrestlers. Janela vs. Black had been set to be part of the stream’s Wrld on GCW Part III event.

Fight Forever will begin at 8 p.m. Eastern time next Friday (January 29) and end at 8 p.m. Eastern on Saturday (January 30).

“So sorry to all the fans @GCWrestling_ & @JANELABABY for not being able to make the show,” Black tweeted. “Some things kinda came up BUT it’s still gonna be a sick show so please watch and continue to donate if possible! #FightForever”

“NOT HAPPENING…. It was good to go, 5 min after we announced it, It wasn’t anymore lol,” Janela tweeted. “I truly wish @CoraJadeWWE well, she has all the potential in the world and will be very rich! Just Unfortunately before she goes, she’s doesn’t get to wrestle the greatest wrestler in the [world]”

It was announced this Wednesday that Black has signed with WWE and is taking part in the first-ever women’s Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic. Janela vs. Black was also publicly announced for Fight Forever later that day.

Black’s new in-ring name in NXT is Cora Jade. She’s teaming with fellow new WWE signee Priscilla Kelly (now known as Gigi Dolin) against Candice LeRae & Indi Hartwell in the first round of the women’s Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic. That match will air on this week’s episode of 205 Live.

Joey Janela vs. Ricky Morton set for Spring Break 4

Joey Janela will face off with one half of The Rock ‘n’ Roll Express at Joey Janela’s Spring Break 4.

Janela released a video on Monday night announcing that Janela vs. Ricky Morton will take place at Spring Break 4. The show is being held at the Marion County Fairgrounds in Indianapolis, Indiana on Saturday, October 10. It will be available to watch live via Fite TV.

Morton made his Spring Break debut when The Rock ‘n’ Roll Express lost to Santana & Ortiz at Joey Janela’s Spring Break 3, part 2 in April 2019.

This Monday was Morton’s 64th birthday. He tweeted about facing Janela at Spring Break: “For my 64th birthday, I get to wrestle @JANELABABY for the biggest independent wrestling scene @GCWrestling_ Wow, just wow. #JJSB4”

Alex Shelley vs. Tony Deppen, Matt Tremont vs. Alex Colon in Tremont’s final GCW match, Jonathan Gresham vs. Lee Moriarty, The Rascalz (Dezmond Xavier & Zachary Wentz) vs. IronBeast (KTB & Shane Mercer), and this year’s Clusterf*ck battle royal have also been confirmed for Spring Break 4. Ethan Page has been announced as the agent for the Clusterf*ck.

Spring Break 4 is part of Game Changer Wrestling’s The Collective. The events were originally supposed to take place in Tampa, Florida over WrestleMania weekend this April before being rescheduled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Face masks are required for those attending the Collective shows and they’re being done at a reduced capacity with a staggered seating chart.

Josh Barnett to face Chris Dickinson at Bloodsport

With Jon Moxley unable to wrestle at the show, Josh Barnett has a new opponent for Bloodsport.

Barnett vs. Chris Dickinson has been announced as the new main event for Josh Barnett’s Bloodsport II. The event is taking place at Showboat Atlantic City in Atlantic City, New Jersey next Saturday (September 14). It will stream live as an iPPV via Fite TV.

Barnett vs. Moxley was originally announced for the show, but Moxley had to pull out of the match due to the case of MRSA that returned in his elbow. Moxley tweeted last month that he still wants to face Barnett in the future, writing that “We’re gonna get this one back.”

This will be the third Bloodsport event that Game Changer Wrestling has put on. It features hybrid MMA-style pro wrestling matches.

Barnett and Minoru Suzuki went to a time limit draw in the main event of Josh Barnett’s Bloodsport I this April. Dickinson defeated Andy Williams at that show and lost to Dan Severn at Matt Riddle’s Bloodsport in 2018.

The matches that have been announced for Josh Barnett’s Bloodsport II are listed below:

  • Josh Barnett vs. Chris Dickinson
  • Tom Lawlor vs. Davey Boy Smith Jr.
  • Ikuhisa Minowa vs. Timothy Thatcher
  • Allysin Kay vs. Nicole Savoy
  • Zachary Wentz vs. Anthony Henry
  • Anthony Carelli vs. Simon Grimm
  • JR Kratos vs. Erik Hammer
  • Sumie Sakai vs. Lindsay Snow
  • Matt Makowski vs. Rory Gulak

Jon Moxley facing Josh Barnett at GCW Bloodsport

Jon Moxley and Josh Barnett will be facing off this September.

Game Changer Wrestling has announced Moxley vs. Barnett for Josh Barnett’s Bloodsport II. The show is taking place at Showboat Atlantic City in Atlantic City, New Jersey on Saturday, September 14 and will air live as an iPPV on Fite TV.

Bloodsport features hybrid MMA style pro wrestling matches. GCW and Matt Riddle partnered for the first Bloodsport show during WrestleMania week in 2018, then Barnett’s Bloodsport I was held this April. The latter show featured Barnett going to a time-limit draw with Minoru Suzuki in the main event.

Moxley and William Regal were spotted in attendance at Josh Barnett’s Bloodsport I. Moxley was nearing the end of his contract with WWE at the time.

Barnett announced in April that he’s signed a multi-fight deal with Bellator MMA.

The hype video for Moxley vs. Barnett is available to watch below:

Josh Barnett to face Minoru Suzuki at Bloodsport

The main event of Josh Barnett’s Bloodsport has been set, and naturally it will feature the show’s titular star against one of the most well renown shoot-style wrestlers of the modern era.

Barnett announced tonight that he will be facing Minoru Suzuki in the main event. As Barnett described in the tweet, Josh Barnett’s Bloodsport will be “Catch Wrestling Violence that will be possessed by the spirits of Karl Gotch and Billy Robinson.”

Suzuki was also in the main event of last year’s Bloodsport main event, where he defeated Matt Riddle.

Matches that have been announced for this year’s event include former UFC Heavyweight champion Frank Mir against Dan Severn, Timothy Thatcher vs. Hideki Suzuki and Killer Kross vs. Davey Boy Smith Jr. Filthy Tom Lawlor and Jonathan Gresham will also appear on the show.

The event, which takes place on April 4, will be held under the Game Changer Wrestling banner as part of their Collective series of shows. Other promotions running shows under the Collective banner WrestleMania weekend include AIW, CHIKARA and Black Label Pro.

Minoru Suzuki added to Josh Barnett’s Bloodsport

Minoru Suzuki is set to appear at Game Changer Wrestling’s WrestleMania week Bloodsport event for the second straight year.

It was announced today that Suzuki will be wrestling at Josh Barnett’s Bloodsport, which is taking place at White Eagle Hall in Jersey City, New Jersey on Thursday, April 4. The event will begin at 4 p.m. Eastern time.

Barnett, Hideki Suzuki, Timothy Thatcher, Jonathan Gresham, Simon Grimm, Tom Lawlor, Frank Mir, Dan Severn, and Suzuki have now been announced for Josh Barnett’s Bloodsport. Mir will be making his professional wrestling debut at the show.

Suzuki was a last-minute replacement for Low Ki at Matt Riddle’s Bloodsport in 2018. Suzuki defeated Riddle in the main event of the show.

In New Japan Pro Wrestling, Suzuki & Zack Sabre Jr. are set to challenge for EVIL & SANADA’s IWGP Tag Team titles at the New Beginning in Sapporo night two on Sunday, February 3. Suzuki vs. SANADA and Sabre vs. EVIL are also set for the New Beginning in Sapporo night one on February 2.

Joey Janela’s Spring Break 3, part two set for WrestleMania weekend

There will be two Joey Janela’s Spring Break events during WrestleMania week 2019.

It was announced last night that part two of Joey Janela’s Spring Break 3 will take place at White Eagle Hall in Jersey City, New Jersey at 11:59 p.m. Eastern time on Saturday, April 6. Saturday’s Spring Break is called “The Greatest Clusterf***,” with it being named after the annual Spring Break multi-man match.

Janela tweeted: “Alot of fans missed out on SB 3 tickets, which sold out in a record setting 4 minutes! Good news the first weekend of April is now SPRING BREAK WEEKEND!!! 2 completely different cards & completely different talent, THIS IS THE GREATEST CLUSTERF***!! Tickets on sale Fri at noon!”

With part two of Spring Break taking place after ROH and NJPW’s G1 Supercard, Janela noted that his show won’t start until everyone arrives from G1 Supercard.

Janela’s Spring Break events are in conjunction with Game Changer Wrestling. Part one of Spring Break 2019 is being held at White Eagle Hall on Friday, April 5, which is opposite NXT TakeOver: New York.

LA Confidential results: David Arquette vs. Nick Gage

Submitted by Brian Reznick

Game Changer Wrestling and Joey Janela’s LA Confidential took place at The Hi Hat in Los Angeles on Friday night.

– The Great Sasuke defeated DJZ

A fun opener. Sasuke was originally supposed to wrestle the Amazing Red, but Red got stranded at the airport due to the crazy weather in New York. We didn’t know who Sasuke’s new opponent would be. People went nuts for Sasuke when he came out, and DJZ got a good response.

They worked a good match, but DJZ didn’t do as much flying as he did at PWG. Sasuke missed a top rope somersault senton onto the apron. DJZ hit a flying DDT where he jumped off part of the stage/area with technical equipment into the ring. Sasuke won with a top rope dropkick to the arm.

– Tony Deppen defeated Jungle Boy

There was a huge response for Jungle Boy. Deppen played a great heel. There was lots of flying by Jungle Boy. They fought in and out of the ring, and the match built well and hit a crescendo when Jungle Boy hit a reverse rana for a near fall.

Unfortunately, it then had a few moments of lull near the end and a few awkward exchanges/botches. Deppen won via roll-up while grabbing Jungle Boy’s tights. There were big “please come back” chants for Jungle Boy after the match.

– Brody King defeated Hardcore Holly

They had a fun mean guy match. Holly looked very fit, but he was noticeably smaller than his WWE days. They set up a fun story early with Holly pushing King into the corners, but King would duck out of the way when Holly would wind up for a big chop. King would then laugh at Holly and played up being the cocky, young guy against the grizzled vet.

They exchanged suplexes and brawled around, building up to a long chop exchange that got a great reaction. Holly hit the Alabama Slam, but King kicked out at two. Holly went to set up a second Alabama Slam, but King rolled through and clubbed him with a lariat for the pin.

Holly got a good reaction afterwards. He asked for the mic and cut a good promo. He thanked all the fans and said he knew that he was smaller than his WWE days, but that was because he was on the gas then. He said that him being on the gas wasn’t a secret and that every big guy in wrestling was on the gas and anyone who said different was a liar.

There was a good reaction to this. He thanked all of the fans again to big cheers.

– Penelope Ford defeated The Human Tornado

Tornado got a great reaction as the returning star from early-mid era PWG. He worked heel almost immediately. He did it effectively, beating down Ford and repeatedly calling her a bitch. Ford would fight back — only to be cut off again. I feel like they might have lost the crowd a little bit with Ford getting beaten down so much.

Ford mounted a comeback, but she was again cut off and Human Tornado hit a flipping back-to-belly suplex. Instead of going for the cover, he gloated forever. He finally picked Ford up and put her on the turnbuckle so he could hit the suplex again, but she escaped and hit a tornado DDT to win.

– Ethan Page defeated D-Lo Brown

The stipulation for this match was that it was for Page’s soul. Brown got a good reception and Page worked heel by twice getting Brown in a side headlock and knocking him down with a shoulder tackle after Brown threw him into the ropes.

Page imitated Brown’s signature taunts to boos. Brown came back with a shoulder tackle and taunted back, then hit his standing leg drop in the ring. Page came back and went for a People’s Elbow — to a chorus of boos — but missed. Brown hit the Sky High for a near fall, then Page used the Rock Bottom for a near fall.

Page got a chair and smashed Brown over the back, but Brown no sold it and fired up. Page looked scared and went for a big swing, but Brown avoided and was even more fired up. Page looked frightened, said he gave up, and tossed the chair to Brown. Page then went to take a powder, but Brown grabbed him on the apron and went to give him a belly-to-back suplex into the ring. Page reversed in mid-air into a crossbody and a cover for the pin.

There were loud cheers and “you still got it” chants for Brown after the match.

– Jimmy Lloyd defeated Delilah Doom, Kikutaro, Facade, Chase Owens, Takashi Minamino, and Jake Atlas in a seven-person scramble match

This was a fun match where everyone got a chance to shine. Owens was a good base for a lot of people, Kikutaro got to do his comedy, and Doom had a great run suplexing almost everyone in the match.

– Jacob Fatu defeated KTB

They had a short match, but it was fun while it lasted. They started brawling and fought to the outside, with Fatu hitting an impressive Fosbury dive. He moves so well for a guy of his size.

Two doors/boards were brought into the match. Fatu got speared through one in the corner for a near fall. Fatu won with a top rope moonsault to a standing KTB, who smashed through the other door, which was set up in the ring, as Fatu landed on him.

– Eli Everfly defeated Marko Stunt by stoppage

Their insane sprint was cut short when Stunt was injured. Everfly attacked Stunt right as he was entering the ring. Everfly hit a dive to the outside, did a ton of reversals with nip ups in the ring. and they exchanged enzuigiris and ended up back outside.

Everfly hit a huge dive to the floor and landed hard. His side and back had an ugly mark on them. Everfly hit a brutal looking reverse rana in the ring for two.

The finish came when they fought outside near the stage. Everfly set up a door across two pieces of equipment and gave Stunt a Canadian Destroyer through it. This looked really bad and was the end of the match. I thought that Stunt got knocked out, but people a little closer to me said he was always responsive to the referee, who went to him immediately.

The ref called for the bell and then the announcer called for crew members to come out. They carried Stunt out and he was holding his leg. Stunt tweeted this morning: “Thank you to everyone who has reached out to check on me, or wished me a speedy recovery! Unfortunately I did suffer a bad break in my leg tonight. I have to have surgery in a few hours, and will keep everyone updated.” Stunt then noted that the surgery has been moved to tomorrow morning.

I hope Stunt is okay. He’s great and was super over here and his stuff looked crisp in the ring.

– Nick Gage defeated David Arquette

So, this match was crazy and I suspect that there will be a ton of accounts of what happened. They were having a crazy hardcore match with Gage taking about 90 percent of it. Arquette would have flurries, but Gage would beat him down quickly. They fought into the crowd, with Gage using beers and chairs as weapons. Arquette came back and tried two tope suicidas (while holding a chair) onto Gage. Neither looked great, but they worked okay.

They got out doors. Gage speared Arquette through one in the corner and beat him with another. Gage left and came back with a bunch of light tubes. He smashed one over Arquette’s head and Arquette was a bloody mess. He hit Arquette with another. Joey Ryan came out and gave Gage a superkick. Messiah then came out and got Ryan out of the ring.

Arquette used all of this to mount a comeback and gave Gage a Diamond Cutter across light tubes set up across chairs. There were good cheers for Arquette after this. Gage got out a pizza cutter and ran it across Arquette’s forehead. He took Arquette to three sides of the ring and cut him up with the pizza cutter on each side. On my side, he put the pizza cutter in Arquette’s mouth before running it over his forehead.

Gage smashed Arquette with another light tube. He took a piece of the light and jabbed it into Arquette’s forehead. He then did it again and Arquette was struggling. Somewhere in here, Arquette got a deep cut on his neck. Arquette immediately put a hand over the cut and it got quiet because the match just sort of stopped with both guys looking at each other.

It looked like they might have been about to rush to the finish, but they didn’t and Arquette just left and went to the side where no one could see him. After about 20 seconds, he came back. His face was more covered in blood and he was still holding his neck. He came back in the ring and rushed Gage in the corner.

It looked like Arquette was really trying to hit Gage and Gage gave him a judo shoulder throw and pinned him. Arquette just stared at him during the cover and immediately walked out holding his neck after the three count.

Gage got a mic and cut a promo. He put over the fans and then said something like “if you’re not willing to take my sh*t, don’t come into my world.” He kept talking, but Arquette came out from the back (still holding his neck) and yelled something at him and left. Gage never acknowledged him and continued his promo.

Gage put himself, the fans, and GCW over and never mentioned Arquette. It was a great promo and everyone was going nuts for Gage.
