F4W NEWSLETTER: Figure Four Weekly: Recapping WWE Stomping Grounds

After a lack of interest heading into the pay-per-view, Stomping Grounds was a show that exceeded expectations.

Given that there weren’t really any surprises at the PPV, that’s probably mostly due to expectations being set too low. Nothing on the show was dramatically better than it should have been. The PPV succeeded where most good WWE shows do. Even if the build was underwhelming, a talented roster was able to go out to the ring and have good matches throughout much of the card.

A look at the WWE’s move to bring in Paul Heyman and Eric Bischoff is the lead story in this week’s issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.  The story talks about what led to the moves, the questions about the moves that aren’t answered, the Heyman-McMahon history, the Bischoff decision, and how Wall Street and AEW fit into this equation.

We also look at the end of the political career of Antonio Inoki, a look at plans for Extreme Rules, business notes on ticket sales for the summer’s biggest events, the business this past week of WWE, the reaction to Seth Rollins vs. Baron Corbin, full coverage of Stomping Grounds with match-by-match rundowns, star ratings and poll results.

We also look at the retirement of Riki Choshu, a look back at his heyday, his awards, his as a headliner and booker and as a creator as well as his retirement mach.

We also look at the July 13 night of wrestling that will be loaded as far as different offerings go, with ESPN+, AXS, WWE Network and B/R Live all offering shows at the same time.  We look at how and why this happened.

MONDAY NEWS UPDATE

Bryan and I will be back tonight covering Raw and the latest pro wrestling and MMA news.  You can send e-mail questions for the show to [email protected]

Some notes regarding the new roles of Paul Heyman and Eric Bischoff in WWE.  There is more Heyman influence in tonight’s Raw, but he’s had influence for some time.  It is not his complete show.  Bischoff is starting very soon (likely his fingerprints will be on things starting after the PPV) and will be at the show on Tuesday since the ad went out and they feel they need to have him there, but this week’s Smackdown is not his show.  Heyman will continue as a TV character in the role of the advocate for Brock Lesnar and not in an authority position, feeling the authority position is played out.  Bischoff’s situation is not confirmed past he was not hired to be a television performer.  We’ll have a lot more on the whys this happened in the new issue but the basic stuff talked about in the current issue is accurate as what caused the move and why these were the two guys picked.  Both will have influence in long-term booking with their ideas, but it is still Vince McMahon’s show.

Regarding the Impact to AXS story that Voices of Wrestling broke, neither side has commented on it.  What we do know is that these talks have been going on for months and we don’t know exactly where they stand past it doesn’t appear a deal is final at this point.  Those at Impact have talked about upgrading their television situation, which they have to do, at some point this year, but nothing was said past that.

A correction from yesterday’s report.  It was Charlie Morgan who announced at yesterday’s Eve show that she was retiring.  She also came out in he speech.  We had reported it as Charli Evans.

Highspots will be releasing a new DVD on Championship Wrestling from Florida, directed by Michael Elliot, who did the great video of Bruiser Brody.

Garrett Gonzalez and myself have an interview with Lance Archer going up on the site tomorrow night.

WWE

  • Paul Heyman on Inside the Ropes (transcript via Fightful)  said this about wanting to do a show without authority figures. “The role of the General Manager is played out. I don’t want to do it because its been going on for 20 years and whether you’re the hero General Manager, the villain General Manager… I don’t know how many people really turn on WWE or any form of sports-entertainment to see how a match is made. The show has become too much of, ‘Here’s the story behind the show that you’re watching’, and I think sometimes, people just want to see the show.” He said. “I think people just want to understand who the characters are and see the characters pitted against each other in compelling situations or riveting storylines that have nothing to do with the corporate structure that orders the match because the General Manager needs to sign the contract.”

Eric Bischoff discusses new role with WWE

On the first episode of his “83 Weeks” podcast since the news of him becoming executive director of SmackDown broke, Eric Bischoff discussed his new role with WWE.

“I want to let everybody know, the magnitude of this opportunity and the challenge and the commitment that goes along with it is not lost on me. There’s been a couple times over the last few days where I’ve been driving around in my truck or taking my dog for a hike and going, ‘Wow, this may be’ — it’s not maybe, this is the biggest opportunity I’ve ever had in this industry. Granted, when Bill Shaw made me president of WCW, obviously that was a very big moment, but I was learning on the job there. I had nothing to lose there. I was taking a company in WCW that had never turned a dollar of profit, that was such a distant number two to WWF at that time that we weren’t even really number two. A company that was fraught with a bad history and all kinds of internal issues, so I had nothing to lose,” Bischoff said.

“In this situation, this is an entirely different ballgame here. This is a very sophisticated company in WWE. There is a great team already in place. They’re moving the SmackDown show to Fox network, which is going to obviously have a lot of eyeballs on it in every way. So the magnitude of the opportunity is not lost on me. I said this in a tweet, this is probably the only thing I’m really going to say beyond this, and I mean this, almost get a tear in my eye saying it, I’m honored, I’m humbled, and I cannot express, even here, because this is a different kind of excitement for me. I haven’t felt this way, maybe in forever but for at least 20 years. This is a whole different ballgame.”

Bischoff said he’s going to move to Connecticut with his wife and dog on probably the 10th or 11th of July.

Bischoff thanked everyone and said he was overwhelmed by the response he got on social media after WWE made their announcement. He confirmed that his podcast with Conrad Thompson will continue, noting that it’s helped him look at things from a different perspective and has made him more energized about the pro wrestling industry.

WWE announced last Thursday that Paul Heyman has been named the executive director of Raw and Bischoff has been named the executive director of SmackDown. Both will report directly to Vince McMahon.

FRIDAY’S NEWS UPDATE

Bryan and I will be back tonight covering the latest WWE news, as well as the ROH PPV and other topics.  You can send questions to [email protected]

Regarding the promotinal e-mail blast that went out earlier today pushing Paul Heyman for Raw and Eric Bischoff for Smackdown this week as the big stars in Dallas and San Antonio, that was both legit and a subject of a lot of controversy.  It wasn’t supposed to be released like that and Bischoff was not even scheduled for the show.  The idea is to push the idea that it’s all new to boost ratings after the last few weeks.  But Bischoff was not even scheduled to be in San Antonio as of this morning (Heyman was to be in Dallas but he’s at every Raw).  It is possible that Vince McMahon has in the last few hours or will contact Bischoff about being in San Antonio based on the advertising going out.

For the Smackdown house shows this weekend, neither Randy Orton nor Daniel Bryan are advertised for the shows.

Here is the cold open for AEW Fyter Fest tomorrow night.

The Dallas Morning News has an article on New Japan Pro Wrestling and next week’s show in Dallas.

July 1, 2019 Observer Newsletter: Paul Heyman & Eric Bischoff hired as WWE Executive Directors

With popularity falling and the XFL debut looming, Vince McMahon named Paul Heyman and Eric Bischoff new Executive Directors of the company on 6/27.

The two will start their new roles imminently. Heyman’s role will be the Executive Director of Raw, while Bischoff will take over Smackdown, with McMahon overseeing both brands. The official changes are set for mid-July. These will be actual decision making characters and not television performers playing the role.

The big question is what does this mean and how much autonomy will both men have. The only time McMahon ever turned creative over to someone in the past was when he brought in Bill Watts, a relationship that fell apart within weeks because Watts was told he would have complete control of direction, and then McMahon started overruling him immediately and he decided to quit.

Paul Heyman, Eric Bischoff named executive directors of WWE TV

During what’s shaping up to be a transformative period for the professional wrestling industry, significant news regarding WWE creative broke this morning.

Sports Illustrated first reported that Paul Heyman has been named the executive director of Raw, and Eric Bischoff has been named the executive director of SmackDown. It was noted that both will report directly to Vince McMahon.

WWE.com also posted a story confirming the news. WWE’s article stated that Heyman and Bischoff “will oversee the creative development of WWE’s flagship programming and ensure integration across all platforms and lines of business. The creation of these roles further establishes WWE’s ability to continuously reinvent its global brand while providing two distinct creative processes for its flagship shows.”

Sports Illustrated reported that the executive director positions are full-time executive roles, and WWE has “no plans at the current time for this to be introduced as part of a TV storyline.”

Heyman has been with WWE as Brock Lesnar’s advocate on TV and has also been contributing behind the scenes. This marks a full-time return to the company for Bischoff, who hosts the “83 Weeks” podcast with Conrad Thompson.

Bischoff being named the executive director of SmackDown comes in advance of the show moving to Fox this October. Sports Illustrated said Bischoff will work directly with executives from Fox.

A Hulk Hogan biopic has been announced, with Netflix close to finalizing a deal.

The Hollywood Reporter reported this afternoon that Chris Hemsworth, best known for playing Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe films, is set to play Hulk Hogan in an upcoming biopic directed by Todd Phillips, who directed the Hangover trilogy.

Hemsworth and Phillips, along with actor Bradley Cooper, Michael Sugar (writer of 8 Mile and the director for the upcoming Joker film), and Eric Bischoff will serve as producers. Hulk Hogan will also serve as a consultant and executive producer along with Ashley Zalta, who is a part of Sugar’s Sugar23 production company.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film will not focus on Hogan’s later troubles, which include the lawsuit against Gawker regarding a sex tape that later revealed derogatory racial language. Instead, it is being described as an origin story that will feature the rise of Hogan’s career.

The Hollywood Reporter says that the Hogan movie project “is in the midst” of closing with Netflix.

Eric Bischoff to induct DDP into WWE Hall of Fame

Following yesterday’s announcement of Jim Cornette inducting the Rock ‘n’ Roll Express into the Hall of Fame, WWE revealed on Tuesday afternoon that Eric Bischoff would be doing the honors for Diamond Dallas Page.

Bischoff and DDP have been longtime friends, working together in the AWA and again when Bischoff was in control of WCW.

“I’m honored,” Bischoff said about inducting Page. “It puts a smile on my face because I know how much it means to him. This is the Holy Grail for him.”

“His journey [in life] is similar to his journey in the ring,” Bischoff said. “DDP was the common guy, the everyman, a blue-collar guy from New Jersey. He represented something that the average person could believe in, in a way that was a little unique. [People thought] ‘That could be me. If I could just get that break, work a little harder, I could be that guy.’ That’s a very inspirational quality to have.”

WWE hasn’t yet confirmed who will be inducting Beth Phoenix, but all other members of the company’s 2017 Hall of Fame class are accounted for.

John Cena will be doing the honors for Kurt Angle, Cornette will induct Ricky Morton & Robert Gibson, John “Bradshaw” Layfield & Ron Simmons will induct Teddy Long, and Ricky Steamboat will induct Rick Rude at the Amway Center in Orlando, Florida on March 31st.
