Hologram gives update on injury status, return timeline

AEW fans haven’t seen Hologram since he suffered a knee injury last September. Today, he offered a cryptic update on his condition, and a warning for a rival luchador.

Hologram shared a picture of himself on social media. Standing on crutches and with his face obscured by a fire emoji, he showed his left leg, which is heavily wrapped from the upper thigh all the way down to the toes.

He included the following text:

Injury detected. Source: clone.

Surgical process complete

Recovery protocol active.

Countdown initiated.

I’m coming back to finish this.

Hologram wrestled as Aramis for over a decade in Mexico before debuting under his new name with AEW in July of 2024. As he went on an undefeated streak, AEW debuted an evil version of him named El Clon, the luchador formerly known as Ares.

Before the two could meet, however, Hologram suffered his leg injury last September. The injury occurred off-camera, but AEW filmed a backstage segment where Hologram was injured by Kyle Fletcher.

With Hologram sidelined, El Clon’s debut was delayed for months. He finally wrestled on Collision on January 3 of this year, defeating Angelico. But he suffered his first loss that same month, falling short in a challenge against Mark Briscoe for the TNT Championship.  He went on to lose to Jon Moxley in a Continental Championship Eliminator match on Dynamite on February 25.

Three new matches set for next AEW Dynamite

Two new matches are part of next week’s AEW Dynamite lineup.

On Saturday, AEW confirmed that Jon Moxley will meet El Clon this Wednesday in Denver after members of the Death Riders squared off against the Don Callis Family on Collision, with the DCF winning after Takeshita pinned Wheeler Yuta. After the match, Moxley and Takeshita confronted one another, continuing the build to their match at Revolution next month. Members of the Don Callis Family and Death Riders came in but after they were taken out, Moxley used the distraction to lay out Takeshita with the Death Rider.

Another match set for Wednesday is Brody King returning to action to take on Mark Davis. This will be King’s first match back since Grand Slam Australia where he failed to defeat MJF in a match that was for the AEW World Championship.

Gabe Kidd challenged Orange Cassidy to a match for next week prior to the main event, hijacking the announcer’s area to issue the challenge. The match was confirmed for Dynamite on social media.

Already announced for Dynamite is MJF and Hangman Page agreeing to a stipulation for their upcoming Revolution World title match. MJF agreed to a stipulation after Page said he would never challenge for the title again if he lost. Page also suggested the two face off in a Texas death match.

AEW Dynamite (February 25)

  • MJF & Hangman Page decide the stipulation for AEW Revolution
  • Jon Moxley vs. El Clon
  • Brody King vs. Mark Davis
  • Orange Cassidy vs. Gabe Kidd

AEW’s Daniel Garcia & El Clon to appear on upcoming CMLL shows

Members of warring factions on AEW, Daniel Garcia and El Clon are scheduled to appear on two CMLL shows this month.

On the latest edition of CMLL Informa, it was announced that Garcia and Clon will appear on CMLL’s shows this Saturday and this Sunday.

A member of the Death Riders, Garcia was in action on Wednesday’s AEW Dynamite alongside Clark Connors in a loss to Orange Cassidy and Roderick Strong. Garcia made his CMLL debut last November, appearing on two shows. In one, he and Wheeler Yuta unsuccessfully challenged for the CMLL Tag Team titles and on the other, he, Yuta and Claudio Castagnoli picked up a trios victory.

For the 34-year-old Don Callis Family member, the appearance has added significance as it will mark his CMLL debut. The longtime luchador, formerly known as Arez, worked for AAA in 2015 and again consistently from 2018 through January 2024.

First three matches announced for AEW Collision

The lineup for this Saturday’s live AEW Collision from Arlington, Texas, is slowly taking shape.

Announced during Wednesday’s Dynamite, TNT Champion Mark Briscoe will defend against Hechicero. Briscoe appeared Wednesday via video and mentioned he’s been wanting to get back into action and is continuing his targeting of the Don Callis Family.

It will be Briscoe’s first title defense since mid-December and just his second overall since defeating Kyle Fletcher for the gold at November’s Full Gear. Hechicero is still looking for his first AEW title of any kind.

Another Don Callis Family member — El Clon — will compete for the second straight week as he faces former ROH TV Champion Komander. Komander came to the aid of Angelico last week in Clon’s AEW in-ring debut, setting up this clash of luchadors.

Ahead of their match against the Triangle of Madness as part of next Wednesday’s Maximum Carnage edition of Dynamite, AEW Women’s World Champion Kris Statlander and AEW Women’s Tag Team Champions the Babes of Wrath will be in action.

Current AEW Collision lineup | This Saturday

  • TNT Champion Mark Briscoe defends against Hechicero
  • Komander vs. El Clon
  • Kris Statlander, Harley Cameron & Willow Nightingale vs. TBA

Hologram’s AEW in-ring return still far away

Don’t expect Hologram back anytime soon.

It was announced during AEW Worlds End Zero on Saturday that El Clon will be making his return at AEW Collision next year in January. However, whoever his next target is, it likely won’t be his intended rival.

“Hologram is still a long way away from returning,” Bryan Alvarez writes.

Clon had been built up with vignettes for several weeks starting in August, causing Hologram stress and discomfort as the two were set to feud. After being attacked backstage by Kyle Fletcher in September, Tony Khan announced that Hologram would be out for the rest of 2025.

Hologram was originally set to challenge Fletcher for the TNT title just days before his injury and was replaced by Orange Cassidy. Fletcher retained after Clon, who was wearing Hologram’s attire, came out and interfered. It was later revealed that not only was it Clon who impersonated Hologram, he had also joined the Don Callis Family.

In the time since his debut, Clon has been seen as a member of the Don Callis Family but has yet to wrestle a match.

El Clon AEW in-ring debut announced

After months of waiting, AEW has finally revealed El Clone’s return date.

Earlier tonight, during the December 27th edition of AEW Worlds End Zero Hour, the Jacksonville-based promotion posted a tease for El Clon’s return. The masked luchador is now set to return to Collision next year in January.

AEW also uploaded a clip on their social media account, with the caption in binary code that reads “EL CLON ACTIVATED” when decoded.

According to AEW’s storyline and kayfabe, Clon is Hologram’s evil twin character. He joined the Don Callis Family a few months ago on Dynamite, when he cost Orange Cassidy his TNT Championship match. Despite his hype and mystique, Clon has yet to wrestle a match on AEW television.

Original plans for El Clon (portrayed by Arez) were to debut and immediately begin a major feud with Hologram, which would have likely ended his winning streak. However, Hologram’s injury earlier this year put those plans on hold.

Despite the tease, there is currently no confirmed date for the return, except that it is scheduled for January 2026.

El Clon debuts on AEW Dynamite, immediately aligns with faction

The Don Callis Family added Andrade El Idolo during Wednesday’s AEW Dynamite and then followed up by adding the mysterious El Clon shortly thereafter.

Clon made his in-person debut during the TNT title match between Kyle Fletcher and Orange Cassidy, initially disguised as his rival Hologram (seen above).

After the referee was taken out by Fletcher, Cassidy was distracted by Callis which brought out the disguised Clon to run him off. He then crotched Cassidy on the ropes, giving Fletcher a window to hit his top rope brainbuster for the win.

After the entire Callis Family attacked Cassidy, Mark Briscoe, Roderick Strong and Kyle O’Reilly (who had come out to try to help), the lights flickered and Clon removed his Hologram mask and jacket to reveal he was not Hologram.

The former Arez, the Clon character debuted via vignettes in late-August, causing Hologram to act like he was glitching out. After being taken out backstage by a Fletcher attack last week, Tony Khan announced it was expected Hologram will miss the rest of the year with an injury which Dave Meltzer said is a re-aggravation of a previous knee injury.

Identity of AEW’s new El Clon character revealed

Hologram’s undefeated streak is in real jeopardy.

After Hologram defeated Jay Lethal on AEW Collision on Saturday, the arena lighting turned red and a video played on the screen. It read “Clon activated” and “Access Granted” before showing a more sinister-looking version of Hologram, along with the word “soon.”

It is believed that Aramis plays the Hologram character. After the angle on Saturday, many fans speculated that Arez would portray the El Clon character.

LuchaBlog has confirmed that Arez is the performer behind the new wrestler, writing:

“The new El Clon character who debuted on AEW Collision is Arez. Many people seemed to figure it out immediately, even though there really weren’t any hints. I think Arez and Aramis are just linked in people’s minds; most US people would’ve been introduced to both of them wrestling each other in places like GCW and MLW so maybe they’re just linked together.”

AEW filed to trademark the terms El Clon and The Clone for wrestling purposes in September 2024. However, the current listings for both on the USPTO website state that the applications were rejected. AEW is still able to appeal the decision.

LuchaBlog writes that AEW has had interest in Arez dating back to the trademark filing, but attributes him finally being brought in to his performance at the Dean 2 show and a recent report that WWE has shifted from targeting CMLL wrestlers to indie wrestlers, with Arez believed to have been among those they were looking at.

LuchaBlog continued:

“AEW filed for the ‘El Clon’ trademark nearly a full year ago. The story I heard was that there was an idea for that to be Arez back then, but nothing really came from it. AEW liked Arez; he was aware they had interest, but also, AEW has a million people (number needs to be fact-checked), and there was no urgency to add another person.

Dave Meltzer and Bryan Alvarez addressed the angle with Hologram and his clone on the latest episode of Wrestling Observer Radio, with Meltzer mentioning, “I’ve heard the rumor of Arez being the guy.” The report from LuchaBlog is available here.

AEW files for two new trademarks

All Elite Wrestling made two new trademark filings this week.

The trademark applications were submitted on September 5 and look to be related to a potential new pro wrestling character. AEW filed to trademark the term “The Clone” and also filed for the same name in Spanish (“El Clon”).

Both trademarks are to cover the following goods and services:

Entertainment services, namely, live appearances by a professional wrestler; Entertainment services, namely, wrestling exhibits and performances by a professional wrestler and entertainer

AEW is the owner of the filings with trademark lawyer Brad Stohry as the attorney of record. The status of both applications is listed as being accepted by the trademark office and waiting to be assigned to an examining attorney.

Any plans that AEW has for this new character — including who would be playing it and when they would be debuting — have not been revealed. The promotion has recently had success with its Hologram character that debuted on Collision this July as a new persona for luchador Aramis.
