The Rock shares Hulk Hogan tribute: ‘Thank you for the house, brother’

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is paying tribute to Hulk Hogan, a childhood hero of his who paved the way for The Rock to become a crossover superstar in wrestling and Hollywood.

Hogan passed away of cardiac arrest at 71 years old on Thursday following weeks of post-neck surgery health complications. In an Instagram tribute, The Rock shared how Hogan impacted his life dating back to when he was just a child growing up as the son of Rocky Johnson.

“To millions of little kids you were a childhood hero – myself included,” Rock wrote. “In 1984, I gave you your ‘HULKSTER’ headband back, in the locker room in Madison Square Garden – I was the lucky kid [who] caught it when you threw it in the crowd. You were wrestling ‘Mr Wonderful’ Paul Orndorff that night in the main event. You were shocked and so happy after the match because you told me that was your very last headband and if it weren’t for me, you’d have no way of getting that exact one made again. You promised me that you would get more made and give me a Hulkster headband of my own as a thank you gift.

“A month later in Madison Square Garden, you did just that. You kept your word, with a handshake and a ‘thanks kid.’ And that meant the world to that little 12 year old boy.”

Hogan and Rock would later share the ring together in 2002, when they faced off in one of the most famous matches in WWE history at WrestleMania 18. It was a special night for The Rock getting to defeat his childhood hero in a passing of the torch moment.

“Just 17 years later, and still a kid at the age of 29 years old — I’m standing in the middle of the ring and facing you – one of my wrestling heroes in the main event of WRESTLEMANIA,” Rock wrote in his tribute. “The match was to decide who would go down in history, as The Greatest of All Time.

“When you kick out of my Rock Bottom finisher – just listen and FEEL that crowd go ELECTRIC…
all for you. I’ve never felt anything like that in my entire wrestling career. It takes two to tango, but that historic crowd reaction was all for you. You may have ‘passed the torch’ to me that night, but you, my friend….…you ‘drew the house’ meaning you sold out every arena and stadium across the country in your prime as Hulk Hogan, on your way of becoming the greatest of all time.”

Hogan’s pop culture superstardom in 1980s helped make it possible for wrestlers like The Rock and John Cena to branch out into acting roles in their own eras. That will always be part of Hogan’s legacy as an on-screen performer.

“From deep in my bones, and on behalf of this wild and crazy world of professional wrestling that we love, I say to you now, and forever…Thank you for the house, brother,” Rock said. “Thank you, for the house. RIP Terry Bollea aka Hulk Hogan.”

Mark Kerr announced for UFC Hall of Fame, The Rock to attend ceremony

With a movie on his life coming out in October, it was fitting that MMA legend Mark Kerr was announced as the final entrant into this year’s UFC Hall of Fame class.

That is why it’s also fitting that the man playing him in that movie — Dwyane “The Rock” Johnson — will also be in attendance for the ceremony.

Kerr’s induction was revealed during Saturday’s UFC 316. Lead announcer Jon Anik said that Johnson, a member of TKO’s board, would be there for the ceremony to be held on Thursday, June 26th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. It will be part of this year’s International Fight Week.

Kerr joins Vitor Belfort, Robbie Lawler, Craig Piligian, and Amanda Nunes in this year’s class.

Kerr, the heavyweight tournament winner of both UFC 14 and UFC 15, will be inducted as the 21st member of the Pioneer Era wing which honors fighters who turned pro before November 17, 2000; are 35 years old; and have been retired for a year or more.

“The Smashing Machine” comes out in theaters on Friday, October 3rd. Johnson plays Kerr while Emily Blunt plays his girlfriend, Dawn Staples.

WOL: The Final Boss or a non-playable character?

The Rock calls himself “The Final Boss” — a term used in video games. But if it’s true that he may not wrestle Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania 41, does that make him more like a non-playable character? Is this just a twist on the Corporate Champion story from the Attitude Era?

I talk about that and more on the Saturday Wrestling Observer Live.

I recap WWE SmackDown in full, preview tonight’s AEW Collision, touch on AEW Grand Slam Australia, and WWE joins Vince McMahon and John Laurinaitis in opposition to the amended Janel Grant lawsuit.

The Rock attached to star in Martin Scorsese movie

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson might be set for one of his biggest movie roles ever.

Deadline reported today that The Rock, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Emily Blunt are attached to star in an untitled drama that would be directed by the legendary Martin Scorsese. The three stars and Scorsese would also be producers of the film. Deadline’s report states that, while everyone involved is engaged in other projects, Hollywood “quickly sparked to [this] pitch” and “multiple bids are either on the table or are fast mobilizing.”

The movie would be set in Hawaii in the 1960s-1970s and would focus on a “ruthless” Hawaiian mob boss who battles rivals for control of organized crime on the island.

“To be written by Nick Bilton, the film focuses on a turbulent time on the island paradise when an aspiring mob boss battled rival crime factions to wrest control of the underworld of the Hawaiian islands,” Deadline wrote. “It was a bloody battle, the kind of terrain Scorsese covered in both ‘Goodfellas’ and ‘The Departed.’ In 1960s and 70s Hawaii, this formidable and charismatic mob boss rises to build the islands’ most powerful criminal empire, waging a brutal war against mainland corporations and rival syndicates while fighting to preserve his ancestral land. It’s based on the untold true story of a man who fought to preserve his homeland through a ruthless quest for absolute power — igniting the last great American mob saga, where the war for cultural survival takes place in the unlikeliest of places: paradise.”

The Rock and Blunt have been co-stars in the past and are also starring together in “The Smashing Machine,” an upcoming biopic on MMA legend Mark Kerr that has already been filmed. Deadline writes that The Rock and Blunt pitched the idea for this new project to Scorsese and DiCaprio, who were receptive.

After returning to the ring at WrestleMania 40, The Rock has not been involved in the mix for WrestleMania 41 so far — but he will be appearing on SmackDown tomorrow night. He also appeared on Raw’s Netflix premiere on January 6 and NXT New Year’s Evil the following day.

The Rock shares update on elbow injury

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has gotten some good news regarding his elbow injury.

Earlier this week, Johnson revealed that his elbow got banged up while filming scenes for his upcoming movie “The Smashing Machine.” His elbow was badly swollen and Johnson joked that it looked like it had a cantaloupe in it.

Johnson was able to get his elbow evaluated after the swelling went down. In an update posted to his Instagram account on Thursday night, Johnson said the injury is a ruptured bursa sac. It will eventually heal, and there is no significant tissue damage.

“No extensive tissue damage. Ruptured bursa sac that will eventually heal,” he wrote. “I’ve had much worse, and as always let pain – and tequila – be the guide Back to work.”

“The Smashing Machine” is a biopic on MMA legend Mark Kerr. Johnson and his Seven Bucks Production company have partnered with A24 Films for the movie. It stars Johnson and actress Emily Blunt.

Filming on the movie started after Johnson took part in WWE WrestleMania 40. At night one of the event, he pinned Cody Rhodes in a tag team match. It was Johnson’s first extensive in-ring action in more than a decade. Rhodes then won the Undisputed WWE Championship from Roman Reigns at night two of WrestleMania.

WWE is building up a Rhodes vs. The Rock match to take place down the line.

Update on The Rock’s post-WrestleMania WWE schedule

It doesn’t look like Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson will be wrestling at WWE’s next show in Saudi Arabia.

WWE is scheduled to make its return to Saudi Arabia for a premium live event on Saturday, May 25. Dave Meltzer reported last week that, while a lot of variables and factors were in play, WWE would obviously like to have The Rock on that event. Meltzer noted that there had definitely been a push to get The Rock to work at least one of WWE’s Saudi events this year.

In an update in the new edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Meltzer writes that Rock’s movie filming schedule rules him out of the May 25 show in Saudi Arabia:

Johnson starts filming ‘The Smashing Machine’ on 5/1. This rules him out of the May Saudi Arabia show and makes SummerSlam tough depending on the schedule. It could mean the earliest he could do another match would be the second Saudi Arabia show. And I could see him waiting for WrestleMania.

“The Smashing Machine” is a biopic with The Rock playing MMA legend Mark Kerr. The Rock’s Seven Bucks Productions is partnering with A24 Films for the movie.

With WrestleMania 40 just three weeks away, The Rock is set to appear on SmackDown from Memphis tonight (March 15). WWE will follow up on Cody Rhodes slapping The Rock at the end of last Friday’s show.

The Rock & Roman Reigns are facing Rhodes & Seth Rollins at night one of WrestleMania. It has implications for Reigns and Rhodes’ Undisputed WWE Universal Championship match at night two. If Rhodes & Rollins win the tag team match, The Bloodline will be barred from ringside for Reigns vs. Rhodes. If Rock & Reigns win, Reigns vs. Rhodes will be a Bloodline Rules (anything goes) match.

The Rock: Me vs. Roman Reigns could produce biggest WWE WrestleMania ever

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson thinks that, if he and Roman Reigns were to headline a WrestleMania, it could be the biggest WrestleMania of all time.

It was announced on Tuesday morning that Johnson has been appointed to the board of directors of WWE’s parent company TKO Group Holdings. Along with that, Johnson has secured full ownership of his “The Rock” name.

As part of a media tour following the announcement, Johnson appeared on ESPN’s First Take. The subject of a potential Rock vs. Roman Reigns dream match came up. Johnson said that he thinks the match could help produce the greatest and biggest WrestleMania ever.

Look, you guys know, I feel like you know me – I’m a long-gamer. I like to build. And what this is, if myself and Roman Reigns were to main event WrestleMania, and I mean this very respectfully of all the WrestleManias prior because I grew up in this business and I love it, we could possibly put on – with us as the main event and this incredible group of men and women who are these incredible performers – we could possibly put on the greatest and the biggest WrestleMania of all time.

Johnson said he has a “deep passion” to grow WWE, and he wants the world to watch if he faces Reigns.

There’s a chance [that Johnson faces Reigns]. I love this business, I love pro wrestling, I love WWE. But also I have this deep passion to grow it and to build it. And if we’re going to do something like this, I want the world to watch.

When asked what he means by growing WWE and taking it to another level, Johnson said he feels there’s still a “global footprint” that WWE can continue to anchor into. There are new places to go and people to reach. Johnson said that, if there were going to be a Rock vs. Reigns WrestleMania, he wants to cast that net as wide as possible.

Johnson made a surprise return to WWE programming on the Day 1 episode of Raw earlier this month. He teased that he wants to face Reigns and take Reigns’ spot at the head of the table.

Reigns is defending his Undisputed WWE Universal Championship in a fatal four-way match against Randy Orton, LA Knight, and AJ Styles at the Royal Rumble this Saturday (January 27). That night, Cody Rhodes will look to win the men’s Royal Rumble match for the second straight year and earn a WrestleMania 40 title shot against Reigns.

Dwayne Johnson reacts to new TKO role, securing ownership of ‘The Rock’ name

On a huge day for the company, representatives from WWE were in New York City on Tuesday to ring the opening bell of the New York Stock Exchange.

It was announced on Tuesday morning that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has been appointed to the board of directors for TKO Group Holdings (WWE’s parent company). Soon after, WWE made the announcement that it has agreed to a 10-year deal to bring Raw to Netflix starting in January 2025.

TKO Group celebrated the news with Johnson ringing the opening bell of the New York Stock Exchange. He was joined by Vince McMahon, Paul “Triple H” Levesque, Nick Khan, Endeavor/TKO CEO Ari Emanuel, and more.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uh22WLIW0I8

After ringing the bell, Johnson and Emanuel were interviewed on CNBC together. Here are notes from their appearance.

Ari Emanuel:

  • When asked about the increase for Raw’s rights, Emanuel said the financial terms of the Netflix deal are “in line” with the stock market’s expectations. Emanuel thinks Netflix is a global leader and the best company for sports entertainment, which they’ve proven with Formula 1 and the Tour de France.
  • Emanuel thinks this is an important step for Netflix. Live programming is important for Netflix.
  • TKO stock is currently up nearly 20 percent after today’s news. Emanuel stressed that the word “Netflix” is a big part in that. The relationship with Netflix strengthens WWE’s brand on a global basis.
  • Emanuel doesn’t think linear TV or cable is going away, but there is a push to streaming. WWE has a linear play with SmackDown and NXT, and Raw is their streaming play. Emanuel thinks it’s a great deal for Netflix.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson:

  • Joining the TKO board of directors is an “unprecedented” move. His grandfather Peter Maivia and father Rocky Johnson would have never thought that something like this would happen.
  • There’s no CEO in the world like Ari Emanuel. Game-changing deals are a testament to who Emanuel is. Johnson is excited for the WWE-Netflix deal.
  • Johnson has secured full ownership of his “The Rock” name in addition to joining the TKO board of directors. Johnson said there’s a business and economic side of getting the name, but it goes much deeper than that for him. Johnson owes The Rock name everything. There would be no wrestling or Hollywood career without it. The name is a derivative of his father. Emanuel had a million reasons to say no, but he found the reason to say yes. The name is something that Johnson has earned and Emanuel thinks belongs to Johnson.
  • This is Johnson’s first time on the board of directors for a public company. He’s been asked to join other boards in the past, but the family connection makes this important. Johnson is excited about it and always looking to grow. Johnson is a builder of things and enjoys building. He loves and admires Emanuel and loves building with him.

The Rock joins board of directors of WWE parent company TKO Group Holdings

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is taking on a new role within WWE.

It was announced on Tuesday morning that Johnson has been appointed to the board of directors for TKO Group Holdings, the parent company of WWE. TKO was formed last September when Endeavor’s acquisition of WWE was made official. It’s a merged company consisting of both WWE and the UFC, though the two promotions operate independently from each other.

A press release stated that Johnson “has significant experience identifying and cultivating revenue generating media rights, live events, sponsorship, licensing, and social media opportunities,” and his appointment to the board of directors “reflects TKO’s commitment to delivering long-term value and strong performance for shareholders through strategic growth initiatives across both UFC and WWE.”

In addition to his appointment to the board, WWE and Johnson have entered into an agreement that gives Johnson full ownership of “The Rock” name.

WWE has also entered into a services and merchandising agreement with Johnson that provides for his promotional, licensing, and other services, and an intellectual property assignment agreement pursuant to which Johnson has secured ownership of the trademarked name, ‘The Rock.’ The name is derived from his father, WWE Hall of Famer Rocky Johnson, who was the first Black champion in WWE history (alongside partner Tony Atlas). Johnson’s grandfather, Peter Maivia, a Samoan-American professional wrestler, was posthumously inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2008.

Johnson returned to WWE programming with a surprise appearance on the Day 1 edition of Raw earlier this month. During the appearance, he teased a future match against Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns. WWE hasn’t confirmed when or if that match will be taking place.

Johnson made a social media post after that appearance stating that he was going to make history, raise the bar, and do things that have never been done before in WWE.

Tuesday morning’s press release included quotes from Johnson, Vince McMahon, and Endeavor/TKO CEO Ari Emanuel.

Johnson said:

My grandfather, High Chief Peter Maivia, and my dad, Rocky ‘Soulman’ Johnson, would’ve never thought this day would come. Which is why I’m very humbled to have a seat at the table that has decades of history and family legacy for me. A table that my family helped to build. Being on the TKO Board of Directors, and taking full ownership of my name, ‘The Rock,’ is not only unprecedented, but incredibly inspiring as my crazy life is coming full circle. At my core, I’m a builder who builds for and serves the people, and Ari is building something truly game changing. I’m very motivated to help continue to globally expand our TKO, WWE, and UFC businesses as the worldwide leaders in sports and entertainment — while proudly representing so many phenomenal athletes and performers who show up every day putting in the hard work with their own two hands to make their dreams come true and deliver for our audiences. I’ve been there, I’m still there and this is for them.

McMahon said:

Very few people on the planet understand the convergence of sports, entertainment, media, and business like Rock. We are proud to have him join the TKO board to help take our company to new heights.

Emanuel said:

I am thrilled to partner with Dwayne and welcome his immense talent to TKO’s Board. Dwayne brings an incredible track record of creating content and building globally recognized consumer brands, and he will play a key role in realizing our ambitions for TKO.

It was also announced that Brad Keywell, the founder of Uptake Technologies, has joined TKO’s board of directors. The board now consists of 13 members: McMahon, Emanuel, Mark Shapiro, Nick Khan, Peter Bynoe, Egon Durban, Steven Koonin, Jonathan Kraft, Sonya Medina, Nancy Tellem, Carrie Wheeler, Johnson, and Keywell.

The Rock reflects on WWE return: ‘We’re just getting started’

In an Instagram post on Tuesday night, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson reflected on his surprise WWE return.

Johnson returned to WWE by appearing on Monday’s Day 1 edition of Raw. He took part in a segment with Jinder Mahal, but what really caught peoples’ attention is what Johnson said at the end of the appearance. Johnson teased that he wants to face Roman Reigns and take Reigns’ spot at the Head of the Table.

“It all hits differently. The theme, the crowd, the connection, the reaction, the electricity, the chills – the mana. Helluva way to bring in 2024,” Johnson wrote on Instagram. “Grateful, blessed & inspired to forever be, the People’s Champ.”

Johnson also added the following line at the end of his post: “We’re just getting started.”

Reigns responded to Johnson’s Raw appearance on Monday by tweeting a crying laughing emoji:

Reigns is set to appear on this Friday’s New Year’s Revolution episode of SmackDown. On the show, Randy Orton, LA Knight, and AJ Styles are facing off in a number one contender’s match to determine who will challenge Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship at the Royal Rumble.

WWE hasn’t indicated where a potential Reigns vs. Rock match would take place.

The full 22-minute segment of Johnson’s Raw return is available to watch below. It was Johnson’s first WWE appearance since showing up on SmackDown last September. Before that, he hadn’t appeared since 2019.

The Rock explains how surprise WWE return happened

While appearing on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson explained how his surprise WWE return from September came to be.

Johnson appeared on the September 15 episode of SmackDown, marking the first time he’s been on WWE programming since 2019. Johnson was a guest on The Pat McAfee Show earlier that day and then showed up on SmackDown alongside McAfee.

Johnson told The Tonight Show that he was in Boulder, Colorado for ESPN’s College GameDay and found out that SmackDown was taking place in Denver the night before. He called Nick Khan and told him that The Rock is coming to SmackDown.

It was incredible. So here’s the crazy thing about that is we were in Boulder. I was there for College GameDay. And I found out the night before that WWE SmackDown was going to be in Denver, which is right up the road. So I call my buddies at WWE, Nick Khan, and I said, ‘Hey man, I heard SmackDown is here. Can you confirm that?’ He said, ‘It is.’ I said, ‘Well good, The Rock is coming to SmackDown.’

I went out there — it was really an incredible thing. I’ve been really lucky over the years to entertain in a lot of different ways, but that kind of connection with the WWE audience — by the way, that kind of connection, it’s just like this tonight. With a live audience, there’s nothing like it.

So my music hit, ‘If you smell.’ And I went out there. They had no idea. And you guys know how hard it is to keep a secret. It doesn’t exist. This was a full-on secret. The people went nuts, 13,000 people sounded like 130,000 people. And it was just incredible. So WWE audience, it’s my family, I love them, and it was incredible. And by the way, I gotta say, not only is that connection just like this incredible, but there’s nothing like going to SmackDown and laying the smackdown on their candy asses all night long.

Johnson and McAfee took part in a segment with Austin Theory on the SmackDown episode. Johnson also had a brief interaction with John Cena during a backstage segment.

Johnson’s SmackDown appearance happened during the Hollywood strike. The strike also led to Cena making an extended return to WWE this fall.

On The Pat McAfee Show, Johnson stated that a match between him and Roman Reigns was “locked” in for WrestleMania 39 at one point. Though the match didn’t end up happening, Johnson left the door open for Rock vs. Reigns to take place at WrestleMania 40 next April.

Cody Rhodes was asked about Johnson’s comments during a recent appearance on Busted Open Radio. Rhodes said it would be outstanding if Johnson is part of WrestleMania 40, but he’s not worried about Johnson — or anyone else — taking his main event spot against Reigns.

Cody Rhodes isn’t worried about The Rock taking his WWE WrestleMania 40 spot

Cody Rhodes isn’t worried about Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson taking his main event spot at WWE WrestleMania 40.

While appearing on Busted Open Radio, Rhodes addressed comments that Johnson made on The Pat McAfee Show this September. Johnson said a match between him and Roman Reigns was “locked” in for WrestleMania 39 at one point. Though it didn’t happen then, Johnson left the door open for him to face Reigns at WrestleMania 40 next April.

Johnson also made a surprise appearance on SmackDown in September.

Rhodes told Busted Open Radio that it would be outstanding if Johnson is part of WrestleMania 40, but he doesn’t think Johnson will take his spot against Reigns in the main event. Rhodes said no matter who the other options are, he’s not flinching on his goal to face Reigns and win the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship.

Rhodes said:

You mentioned The Rock. Nobody has asked me about The Rock, because I think they’re scared to ask me or don’t want to be rude. I’ll say this about The Rock coming on Pat’s show, which I was watching live because I love Pat. And then SmackDown and all this. The Rock did for sports entertainment so, so much and continues to do so much by being the biggest star in Hollywood that I’m able to be at the level I’m at because I can stand on shoulders like those of The Rock. So he could have come on there and run me down and I still would have the highest respect for The Great One. He’s honestly a model superstar for anybody who wants to just supersede all expectations.

With that said though, no matter what he said, anyone who did ask me, anyone who did confront me on it, I said I’m not flinching. I’m not flinching. And I feel like if The Rock and I were in the same room, he would expect nothing less from me. If you think it’s somebody else, I’m going to do everything I can to make sure you know it’s me. And that’s the same attitude that The Rock had when he was climbing the ladder.

I don’t care who it is. If that happens to be The Rock, if that happens to be anybody who comes into this fray. A wonderful superstar like LA Knight. An absolutely stellar performer like Sami Zayn, who him and I went toe-to-toe in a way last year. Line ’em up and I’m just going to do everything I can to outrun them. I certainly am. And I mean that with the utmost respect to them. I wasn’t shook at all by Rock’s big day out. What I would say is: not flinching. If Rock’s part of WrestleMania 40, that would be outstanding. He should be. It’s The Rock. But I don’t think he’ll be in my spot.

Rhodes headlined WrestleMania 39 against Reigns but lost the match. The finish involved interference by Solo Sikoa. Since then, Rhodes has been on a mission to get back to that spot and finish the story by defeating Reigns for the title.

At Survivor Series later this month, Rhodes will compete in WarGames for the first time. The men’s WarGames match is currently Rhodes, Jey Uso, Seth Rollins & Sami Zayn vs. Damian Priest, Finn Balor, Dominik Mysterio & JD McDonagh.

Rhodes & Uso are challenging Priest & Balor for the Undisputed WWE Tag Team titles on Raw tonight.

WrestleMania 40 is being held in Philadelphia on Saturday, April 6 and Sunday, April 7, 2024.

Update on The Rock’s status for WWE WrestleMania 40

In the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer provided the latest update on Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s status for WrestleMania 40.

This September, Johnson told The Pat McAfee Show that him facing Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 39 was “locked” in at one point. The match didn’t end up happening, but Johnson teased that he could potentially work WrestleMania 40 next April.

Sports Illustrated reported earlier this week that “the decision about WrestleMania will not be The Rock’s to make, nor is the main event even a topic of substance. There are currently no plans for this to happen.”

Meltzer confirmed that, after Johnson turned down WrestleMania 39, no one is going with the idea that he’ll do WrestleMania 40.

“If he wants the spot I can’t believe WWE would turn him down but after Johnson turned it down last year, nobody is going with the idea he’s going to do it this year,” Meltzer wrote.

Regarding the stories that WWE won’t do Rock vs. Reigns at Mania if Rock wants to do it, what we were told is this. If he wants the spot I can’t believe WWE would turn him down but after Johnson turned it down last year, nobody is going with the idea he’s going to do it this year. The match is not scheduled, unlike at this time last year when the match was considered a good shot. The belief is that Johnson will have plenty of work once the strikes are over [and] he’ll have plenty to do. What we were told is that Rock is not going to come back and win the title. I’d never anticipate that would be an issue as if the match was to happen, I always figured Reigns to win and Rock then retiring in the ring.

Aside from a six-second squash of Erick Rowan at WrestleMania 32, Johnson hasn’t wrestled since facing John Cena in the main event of WrestleMania 29 in 2013.

Johnson made a surprise appearance on SmackDown alongside McAfee in September. He took part in a segment with Austin Theory and also had a brief interaction with Cena.

Reigns’ next Undisputed WWE Universal Championship defense will be against LA Knight at Crown Jewel in Saudi Arabia on Saturday, November 4.

In addition to building up the Knight match, a brief face-to-face confrontation between Reigns and Cody Rhodes took place on SmackDown last week.

WrestleMania 40 is being held at Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field on Saturday, April 6 and Sunday, April 7, 2024.
