WWE Bash in Berlin preview & predictions: Everybody loves Gunther

Today’s WWE Bash in Berlin in Germany (1 PM Eastern on Peacock/WWE Network) should be another fast-paced, three-hour PLE.

The Paul “Triple H” Levesque era is all about these five-match shows. It’s how he ran TakeOver events back in the first black & gold era of NXT and now he’s brought that philosophy to the main roster. The idea is they save some matches for SmackDown, such as LA Knight’s US title defense this week, and each PLE match gets all the time it needs. On top of that, keeping the shows under the three-hour mark helps ensure fans stay hot throughout.

Still, I’ve heard fans express they don’t like the short lineups. When you look at the international shows that have followed this format, however, they’ve all been well-reviewed. Backlash France, King & Queen of the Ring in Saudi Arabia, Money in the Bank in Toronto, and Clash at the Castle in Glasgow were all excellent shows.

Many of the above-mentioned PLEs benefited greatly from having a hot crowd and Berlin’s fans will likely be bringing their A-game to this show. I’m expecting Gunther to receive a hero’s welcome. I think when this show was announced, many felt this would be where Gunther wins the World title rather than his first defense, but this works too. It’s almost as if Saturday is his home championship parade after having won the title in an away game.

Wrestling fans are spoiled with good PPV/PLEs right now and this won’t be any different. Below are previews and predictions for each match at Bash in Berlin.

Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes defends against Kevin Owens

Rhodes heads into this title defense against Owens as a -6000 favorite and it’s hard to disagree with those odds.

While the result is not in question, how we get there should be interesting. In recent weeks, WWE has done a good job of reminding the audience (and Rhodes) about all the times Owens has turned on someone who was seemingly his friend. So, will he do it again? It doesn’t feel like anyone is asking for a KO heel turn at the moment, but that doesn’t mean it won’t happen.

The possibility that Owens will turn heel during this program with Rhodes seems high, but it also feels likely Randy Orton and Rhodes will run a similar program sometime before WrestleMania. There’s more history with Orton and Rhodes so if they are going with the jilted friend angle, it makes more sense with Orton.

Rhodes will win clean and either Owens will remain a babyface or we will start to see some signs of him breaking bad again.

Prediction: Rhodes retains

WWE World Heavyweight Champion Gunther defends against Randy Orton

Gunther is also a -6000 favorite to successfully defend against Orton and I, along with many others, would be shocked if anything other than that happens.

This will be a straight match with a clean finish and a chance for the live fans to give Gunther his flowers. I also think many will be surprised at how well these two pair up and the kind of chemistry they have. On the surface, it’s two guys from completely different generations and backgrounds, but this will probably be the best match on the show.

I’m also very interested to see Orton’s approach to taking Gunther’s chops. It feels like it could go either way. Either he won’t want to take many of them, or he’ll want to take more of them than anyone else on the main roster has so far. No middle ground.

Prediction: Gunther retains

WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions Unholy Union (Alba Fyre & Isla Dawn) defend against Jade Cargill & Bianca Belair

Belair & Cargill are listed as -175 favorites to defeat the Unholy Union, but there are a couple of scenarios that would see the champions retaining.

At some point, either Cargill is turning on Belair or vice versa. It’s just not clear how exactly this match will play into this eventuality.

Three possible things could happen here:

  1. Cargill and Belair go full Road Warriors and run through the Unholy Union to take back their titles
  2. Either Cargill or Belair turns on the other and Fyre & Dawn retain
  3. There is a miscommunication or some other type of mild breakup tease between Cargill and Belair, resulting in the Unholy Union retaining

Blair Davenport and Naomi will also get involved. but will likely just cancel each other out.

As for whether it is Cargill turning on Belair or Belair turning on Cargill, I think it’s more likely that Cargill ends up heel. I have a hard time picturing a heel Belair, but they may go that route too.

Admittedly, part of the reason I’m picking Fyre & Dawn to retain is that I just don’t want to pick all the favorites but I also think there’s a decent chance they win.

Prediction: Unholy Union retains

Dominik Mysterio & Liv Morgan vs. Damian Priest & Rhea Ripley

The Terror Twins are listed as -250 favorites and those seem like fair odds.

Normally, a new or recently restructured faction would win in their first big PLE match but that doesn’t make the most sense here. Ripley and Priest are both coming off losses at SummerSlam, Morgan is on fire right now, but then there is good ol’ Dominik. You can always pin Dominik.

The most likely finish is Dominik taking a Riptide from Ripley and Priest pinning him shortly after. That is the way.

You could have Ripley pin Morgan to set up another title match between them, but that wouldn’t be as satisfying to the audience as Dominik getting his comeuppance. There are lots of ways to get to another match between Ripley and Morgan, and they don’t have to have Morgan take a pin in a tag match to do that.

Prediction: Priest & Ripley

CM Punk vs. Drew McIntyre in a strap match

Punk is listed as a -500 favorite to win and probably will.

It was mentioned on Wrestling Observer Radio recently that the rules of this match tend to favor the heel going over. They are going with the touch all four corners rule which is a prime breeding ground for either a fluke or a dirty win. There are examples of babyfaces winning these matches like Eddie Guerrero beating Brock Lesnar for the WWE Championship at No Way Out in 2004. I think that match might be a blueprint of sorts for what we see in Berlin.

During his AEW run, Punk was often portrayed in his matches as not being as good as the other guy but he uses his veteran skills and high ring IQ to find a way to win. He may do something similar here. The rules of this strap match also provide an opportunity for Punk to win in a fair way, which could be considered clean, but he wins by being smarter, not more athletic, stronger or just being a better wrestler.

Another factor is that it’s rumored/heavily believed Punk vs. McIntyre III will take place inside Hell in a Cell at Bad Blood. So, whatever happens in Berlin should lead to that.

Prediction: Punk

WWE Payback preview & predictions: Judgment Day takes the spotlight

WWE Payback takes place tonight at the PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh and unless something suddenly changes, the show will be void of any Bloodline content — the first pay-per-view/PLE in nearly a year to not feature a match or segment including the stable.

Payback will also not include many of the company’s top stars. Roman Reigns, Brock Lesnar and Logan Paul will not be on the show. Bianca Belair is taking time off, Cody Rhodes will not be wrestling (although he’ll be a guest on The Grayson Waller Effect) and Ronda Rousey appears done with the company for the time being. The Usos, Solo Sikoa, and Paul Heyman are not currently advertised either. Many of the top names that have driven WWE’s major storylines last year and this year are simply not featured this weekend.

Enter John Cena who was announced Friday as the show’s guest host.

The Judgment Day will be looking to fill any holes left by the stars not booked. They are officially part of two of the six matches on the card, but Damian Priest’s Money in the Bank briefcase could easily factor into a third. The stable has shown they can be a draw, especially for NXT, so it’ll be interesting to see how much of Saturday’s show revolves around them.

Which match headlines this show should be interesting as well. A case can certainly be made for Becky Lynch vs. Trish Stratus being the main event. It’s the blowoff to their feud, in a steel cage, and has two of the company’s most recognizable names. However, the angle has not exactly been on fire of late.

Sami Zayn & Kevin Owens vs. Judgment Day could easily headline the show as well. Seth Rollins vs. Shinsuke Nakamura could go on last as well, but the issue there is that few fans believe Nakamura has any chance at all of walking away with the WWE World Heavyweight title…although the aforementioned MITB briefcase looms large.

The show has drawn well. As of this writing, WrestleTix has 12,475 tickets out for the show with the get-in price being $300. It’s a hot ticket in Pittsburgh.

Regardless of the stars not booked, there are plenty of good matches that should make for an entertaining show. Below are previews, my predictions and betting odds for WWE Payback (8 PM Eastern on Peacock/WWE Network):

Becky Lynch vs. Trish Stratus in a steel cage match

Lynch is a -1000 favorite.

The idea has always been for Stratus to put over Lynch and I have to imagine this is the blowoff to their story. Lynch should win clean and Stratus will get her comeuppance in the end.

Lynch’s star power has taken a bit of a hit since her original era as “The Man.” She’s due for a hot storyline to get her back to where she was but unfortunately, this hasn’t been it. I’m not sure when and where this angle lost its luster, but it’s been lacking for a while.

Stratus has put all of herself into this heel gimmick, but it’s hard for fans to hate returning legends. Edge’s heel turn went in a very similar direction. I’m assuming Stratus turns back babyface the next time we see her after Payback, which could be a while from now. She has plenty of projects outside of wrestling that are far easier than taking bumps. This is likely it for her current run, but she could return by WrestleMania.

Prediction: Lynch

WWE World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins defends against Shinsuke Nakamura

Rollins is a -1000 favorite.

It’s nice to see Nakamura in a top storyline, but he’s not walking away with the title. However, Rollins might not be either due to Priest and the aforementioned briefcase.

Nakamura’s videos in recent weeks, which have been excellent, have focused on Rollins’ injured back — likely to be the eventual downfall of his World title run. Eventually, the physical toll of being a fighting champion will be too much for him and a dastardly heel will pick up an underhanded victory against a vulnerable champion.

AEW has been doing a similar storyline with International Champion Orange Cassidy for the better part of a year now, but I’m expecting WWE to pull the trigger on the champion losing much sooner.

I’m not sure if Priest’s eventual MITB cash-in, which could come this weekend, will be successful or not. Balor could easily mess things up for his stablemate as part of their ongoing story.

Prediction: Rollins retains

WWE Women’s World Champion Rhea Ripley defends against Raquel Rodriguez

Ripley is a -5000 favorite to win.

The betting world certainly isn’t giving Rodriguez much of a chance here. Ripley, Dominik Mysterio and the rest of Judgment Day are one of the hottest acts in the company right now and, thus, taking the title off Ripley would serve little purpose at the moment.

However, WWE has always booked Rodriguez strong and they will try to find a way for her to get cheated out of winning the title.

This might not be Ripley’s main story of the night either. She’ll be ringside when Finn Balor & Priest challenge Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn as well. Ripley could even appear during a third match if Priest attempts to cash in his briefcase later in the show.

Prediction: Ripley retains

WWE Undisputed Tag Team Champions Sami Zayn & Kevin Owens defend against Judgment Day (Finn Balor & Damian Priest)

Zayn & Owens are -1000 favorites.

Not that gambling on WWE results is actually something anyone should do, but if you are going to do it, you might consider putting a little money on Judgment Day. Balor and Priest have not been getting along very well lately and it seems pretty clear an eventual split is coming, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s happening tonight.

Dave Meltzer reported earlier this month that the plan is for Priest to leave the group, likely turning babyface in the process. To me, the likeliest scenario is Balor somehow costing Priest his opportunity to cash in the MITB briefcase. If that’s the case, their split isn’t happening here.

JD McDonagh will likely factor into things here as well as we’ll likely find out more about his standing with Judgment Day on the show.

WWE loves a good storyline of two people who don’t get along having to co-exist as tag champions. I think we could be headed to exactly that. We’ll see.

Prediction: Judgment Day wins the titles

LA Knight vs. The Miz

Knight is a -2500 favorite.

Unless WWE decides they are going to give Knight the Daniel Bryan treatment, it seems very likely he will win this match.

I thought I would hate this feud, but I don’t. Both Miz and Knight can tell a good story in their promos and the angle that Miz thinks Knight is a copy of the Attitude Era and someone with fleeting popularity has been surprisingly entertaining.

Knight should win clean.

Prediction: Knight

WWE United States Champion Rey Mysterio defends against Austin Theory

Mysterio is listed as a -500 favorite.

This has the closest betting odds of the night which isn’t surprising as this could really go either way. The story they are telling is that Santos Escobar was supposed to get the shot at Theory, but Mysterio replaced him in a title match after he was attacked and injured. That seems to signify there could be a dissension-type storyline going on with the LWO soon. I mean, similar stories have worked for The Bloodline and Judgment Day, so why not do it with a third stable?

So far, Escobar seems to be coping with having lost his title shot in a mature and sportsmanlike manner, completely unfitting of a professional wrestler. Will that remain the case? They are going somewhere with this angle, but I just don’t know if an Escobar heel turn is the destination.

Theory regaining his title here seems possible, but so does Mysterio winning clean and then being respectfully challenged by Escobar. I can’t offer a clear prediction for this one because there are multiple avenues the story could take. However, it feels likely Mysterio will retain.

Prediction: Mysterio retains

Bad Bunny vs. The Miz announced for WWE WrestleMania 37

Bad Bunny vs. The Miz has been made official for WrestleMania 37.

On tonight’s episode of Raw, The Miz formally issued a challenge to Bad Bunny for a match at WrestleMania during an episode of Miz TV. After defeating Jeff Hardy later in the show, The Miz was laid out by Bad Bunny after he smashed a guitar into Miz’s back, payback for Miz attacking Bad Bunny in the same fashion last week. Bad Bunny then accepted Miz’s challenge for WrestleMania.

It was later announced that a new Dirt Sheet would take place next week on Raw, where The Miz and John Morrison will premiere their new music video “Hey Hey Hop Hop”, in honor of Bad Bunny.

Bad Bunny has been feuding with both The Miz and John Morrison since appearing at the Royal Rumble in January, laying both out with a dive during the men’s Royal Rumble match. He has been allied with Damien Priest, who debuted for the Raw brand following the Royal Rumble. Priest helped Bad Bunny win the 24/7 Championship. However, Bad Bunny later gave the title to R-Truth.

WrestleMania is scheduled to take place on two nights, April 10 and 11.

Bad Bunny hands WWE 24/7 title to R-Truth on Raw

Bad Bunny handed the WWE 24/7 title to R-Truth tonight on Raw, ending his reign with the championship.

During a backstage segment on tonight’s Raw, R-Truth tried to sneak up and attack Bad Bunny to win the championship back. Damien Priest, however, pointed R-Truth out before he could attack. Truth, who was carrying Stone Cold Steve Austin merchandise, responded by giving Bad Bunny the merch he had on him. He told Bad Bunny, however, that he wanted his title back. After some deliberation with Priest, Bad Bunny gave the championship to R-Truth, saying he respected Truth and the business.

This ends Bad Bunny’s reign with the championship after 28 days, pinning a laid out Akira Tozawa on the February 15 edition of Raw. This starts R-Truth’s 50th reign as champion.

During his run as champion, Bad Bunny showcased the championship during high profile events, including his appearances on Saturday Night Live and last night’s Grammy Awards. Bad Bunny won a Grammy last night for Best Latin Pop or Urban Album.
