Big Damo on PROGRESS Wrestling acquisition: ‘Was not on the bingo card for us’

Former WWE stars Big Damo and Nikki Storm (fka Nikki Cross) open up about their unexpected takeover of PROGRESS Wrestling and how it all came together.

In an exclusive interview with Tom Campbell of Cultaholic Wrestling, Damo and Storm talked about their plans for PROGRESS Wrestling after acquisition. Damo exclaimed that it was the last thing they expected.

“Genuinely, this was not on the bingo card for us, either. We have talked about a million different scenarios for a long time. We have been wrestling for 22 years, Nikki has been wrestling for 18 years, so we know there is a time limit. We are going to have to start thinking about what is the future and we thought that was going to be with our little Scottish promotion in Glasgow, but no, it turns out.”

He added that the opportunity fell in their lap shortly after Storm’s WWE release.

“This opportunity came along a few weeks ago. Not long after Nikki had been released, actually. It was only a few days after. I’ll just be honest, I was in Belfast about to jump on a plane going to another show and I had to sit thinking about it on the plane like, ‘This is wild. There’s no way this could happen.’ Then I come off the plane and we start talking about it seriously. At first we were talking with James Amner, he’s been in situ at PROGRESS for a long, long time. He’s one of the hidden gems. He hates credit in every single way but he’s one of the reasons PROGRESS has been ticking over at all for maybe a decade.”

“When I broached Nikki with it, she was like, ‘What?’ So there’s been plenty of conversations and, listen, the boys made it very easy. I dealt directly with Martyn Best…and he was very patient with me and we were able to come to the best agreement for both of us. That was one of the most amazing experiences in terms of how easy he made that for me. This could have been very, very difficult and this could have been out of our reach, realistically, because we are living in the United States. That is still our home. Obviously that will change in the next few years but that is our handicap, effectively, in one regard. But now it’s putting us in a position where we’re starting to think about, ‘Okay, what do we want to do next?’ and PROGRESS Wrestling has answered a lot of those questions very quickly.”

“We can now start thinking about long term, and that’s something Nikki and I were talking about the other day. Our goal is to make this into the number one independent promotion on the planet.”

Storm added that the ambition to make the promotion the best wrestling company in the globe.

“Number one. Letter A. Don’t get me wrong, we want to give back to the industry, but PROGRESS is going to be the number one wrestling company in the world.”

The announcement of their takeover was announced in May. Storm is set to compete in her first match since the WWE release at PROGRESS Wrestling in July.

Former PROGRESS co-owner issues statement following Nikki Cross & Big Damo acquisition

Former PROGRESS Wrestling co-owner Lee McAteer has issued a statement following Nikki Cross & Big Damo’s acquisition of the British wrestling promotion.

The promotion released an official statement on May 26, 2026, and revealed that co-owners Martyn Best and Lee McAteer were done with the promotion, and former WWE wrestlers Nikki Cross & Big Damo had acquired it.

McAteer later shared a statement on social media reflecting on his tenure at PROGRESS, expressing his pleasure in passing the promotion to Cross and Big Damo.

Being a custodian of PROGRESS Wrestling has been one of the greatest honours of my life, and with fellow owners Martyn Best and Matt Buczek, we have restored and protected PROGRESS and leave it in a stronger place for it to grow to the next level. I have been so proud of the connection we have nurtured with our loyal fans, and it will be something I will always treasure,” he wrote.

I am delighted that we are handing the company over to two people I have great admiration for, and who are highly respected throughout the wrestling community. Big Damo and Nikki Cross are British and Irish wrestling royalty, and after hearing their thoughts, I know that the most exciting chapter in PROGRESS’s history is still to come. I am incredibly excited for the future of PROGRESS under Big Damo and Nikki. Let’s all get behind both of them. To all the PROGRESS fans, wrestlers, colleagues and partners, thank you,” he concluded.

What is PROGRESS Wrestling?

Based in London, UK, PROGRESS Wrestling was established in 2011 by Jim Smallman, Jon Briley, and Glen Joseph. Following a successful run filled with a few ups and downs, PROGRESS was acquired by Lee McAteer and Martyn Best in 2022.

In February 2024, PROGRESS Wrestling merged with DEFY Wrestling, an independent promotion based in Seattle, Washington, in the United States. And on May 26, 2026, both PROGRESS and DEFY were acquired by Cross and Big Damo.

Over the years, PROGRESS has produced and worked with several talented wrestlers, including Pete Dunne, JD McDonagh, Trent Seven, Michael Oku, and many more.

Nikki Cross & Big Damo acquire PROGRESS Wrestling, co-ownership of DEFY

Former WWE wrestlers Big Damo and Nikki Cross have taken ownership of PROGRESS Wrestling and co-ownership of DEFY Wrestling.

The official announcement Monday revealed the news as Martyn Best and Lee McAteer are done with the promotion.

“We are delighted to be the new co-owners of PROGRESS. We both started in the UK and Ireland and fully believe this is host to the greatest talent pool on earth and PROGRESS is well positioned to showcase this generation and the next generation,” said Damo.

“We are also very excited to be the new co-owners of DEFY Wrestling. Home to the most feverish fan base in the Pacific Northwest. Nikki and I have an affinity with Seattle, and I always had an incredible experience wrestling on the DEFY shows in front of the Defyance.”

“We would like to thank Martyn Best and Lee McAteer for being wonderful custodians and bringing new levels of professionalism to our industry. They steered PROGRESS after a worldwide pandemic, created an incredible wrestling network in Hooked On Wrestling TV, created a phenomenal working partnership with Pro Wrestling NOAH in Japan and DEFY in USA and showed ambition, and an incredible drive to give multiple talented men and women visas to compete in the USA, and opportunities in so many other countries.”

“Our job now is to guide PROGRESS through the coming years, identify new talent and integrate them with the current phenomenal roster. I’m proud to say we have some of the best wrestlers in the world performing for us right now. Our men’s World Champion Cara Noir and Charlie Sterling are performing at the highest level. Our Tag Team Champions Luke Jacobs and Ethan Allen are two of the best wrestlers in the world under 30. Our women’s division is host to some of the best women wrestlers alive. Women’s champion Alexxis Falcon, Rhio, Kanji, Emersyn Jayne and so many more. We also have Hollywood actor Paul Walter Hauser regularly walking the Hollywood red carpets with his PROGRESS Proteus Championship belt. Then there is Gene Munny, Charles Crowley, former WWE star Axel Tischer, Hollie Barlow, Simon Miller, Man Like DeReiss, Spike Trivet, Lykos Gym, and so many more.

“I could go on all day but Nikki and I want to continue to give these amazing athletes a platform to create engaging stories, while also leaving plenty of room for absolute masterpieces in ring.”

“We also want to capitalise on our great relationships with talent and promotions worldwide, and create new partnerships that not only bring phenomenal talent to our shores, but also export our best talent to new ventures abroad.”

Cross’s statement reflected on women’s ownership of wrestling promotions, and plans to elevate PROGRESS and DEFY.

“It is not lost on me that there are few female owners in professional wrestling, so I want to bring my experience and insights to the table and elevate PROGRESS and DEFY to new levels,” said Cross.

“We were deeply encouraged by the first PROGRESS Women’s Super Strong Style 16 tournament. Rhio and Gisele competed in an incredible main event, and Rhio proved to be a worthy winner! We will soon be announcing that next year, in 2027, we will host the first stand alone female Super Strong Style 16.”

“We are also in the process of bringing PROGRESS to new cities across the UK, and will be excited to announce those details soon.”

Cross was among the talents released by WWE in April this year. Her first match since the exit was announced for July in PROGRESS Wrestling.

Killian Dain makes AEW debut on Rampage

Big Damo, formerly Killian Dain in WWE NXT, made his AEW debut on Friday’s Rampage episode.

Damo lost to Shawn Spears in what was billed ahead of time as Spears vs. “A giant.”

Damo was part of mass releases by WWE in June 2021, after he had been with the company since 2016. Damo was part of the Sanity group in NXT from 2016 to 2018, and the faction got a brief call-up to the SmackDown brand in WWE’s 2018 Superstar Shake-up. Damo returned to the NXT brand in 2019, and finished his WWE tenure as part of that roster.

Damo debuted for NJPW earlier this year, and has remained active on both the international and American independent scenes since leaving NXT. He also appeared for the Control Your Narrative promotion earlier this month, winning both of his bouts for that company.

Tommy End, Big Damo & Mary Dobson report to the WWE Performance Center

Though it had been known for some time that they would be headed to NXT, WWE officially announced on Wednesday afternoon that Tommy End, Big Damo, and “Crazy” Mary Dobson have reported to the company’s Performance Center.

The three new arrivals join Roderick Strong as the most significant talents to recently make their way to NXT.

End should already be familiar to many fans in the United States. He has appeared in Pro Wrestling Guerrilla’s Battle of Los Angeles both of the last two years, and has made several appearances for EVOLVE Wrestling. Originally from the Netherlands, End has a kickboxing and martial arts background.

In his final independent wrestling match before heading to WWE, End faced PROGRESS Champion Marty Scurll and Mark Haskins in a triple threat match for the title in the main event of PROGRESS Wrestling’s landmark show at the O2 Academy in Brixton. His final independent match in the United States was at BOLA, and he bid farewell to EVOLVE in a match against Matt Riddle over SummerSlam weekend.

Damo, an imposing wrestler from Northern Ireland, similarly had several farewell stops in the United Kingdom before heading to the Performance Center.

Despite her age, the 23-year-old Dobson already has a significant amount of experience since making her professional debut in 2011. And she has already appeared in NXT multiple times as an enhancement talent.
