GFW crowns new World Champion at TV tapings

Eli Drake is the new GFW Unified World Champion following tonight’s tapings in Florida.

In a 20-man gauntlet match, Drake entered as the first participant and outlasted everyone else, last eliminating Eddie Edwards to win the title. This will air on the August 24th edition of Impact.

On the episode that aired tonight, it was officially announced that former champion Alberto El Patron had been stripped of the title. Bruce Prichard first tried to award it to Bobby Lashley, but Jim Cornette returned as an on-screen authority figure and set up the gauntlet match.

The move to strip El Patron was made earlier this week following GFW’s investigation of the Orlando International Airport incident between El Patron and fiancee Paige from July. GFW released a statement saying that “While it is apparent that initial reports unfairly characterized El Patron’s involvement in the incident in the Orlando airport, we are nonetheless disappointed with the manner in which he dealt with this situation, we expect more decorum from all on the GFW roster, especially the World Champion.”

While their investigation of the incident has concluded, El Patron remains suspended.

Drake, 34, had been in NXT as Slate Randall before joining Global Force Wrestling in 2015, most recently teaming with Chris Adonis, aka Chris Masters.

GFW strips Alberto El Patron of World Championship

GFW announced its decision this morning to strip Alberto El Patron of his Unified World Championship which would seem to indicate he will not be appearing at the television tapings this week.

Sources in the promotion had told us that the decision had not been made over the weekend.

Because they are taping television through the end of October, everything leading to Bound for Glory, if Alberto is not at television, and it appears he won’t be, all the main event plans would have to be changed and a new champion would have to be crowned.

Ed Nordholm would have been the person with the final say on this matter and we had heard that even though Alberto was cleared of all charges regarding the Orlando Airport incident, that his long-term behavior had been a concern.

The company released a statement:“GFW has concluded its internal consideration of the events surrounding the suspension of Alberto El Patron. While it is apparent that initial reports unfairly characterized El Patron’s involvement in the incident in the Orlando airport, we are nonetheless disappointed with the manner in which he dealt with this situation, we expect more decorum from all on the GFW roster, especially the World Champion.”

We have communicated with El Patron our decision to strip him of his championship title. No decision has been taken as to the date on which he will be reinstated to the roster, the conditions of which are a private matter between the company and El Patron.”

One would expect an announcement in the next few days regarding the filling of the championship, which would likely take place at the tapings that start on Thursday with an almost-live show.

As noted this past week on Wrestling Observer Radio, John Morrison will be brought in for television this week for a top position.

Alberto El Patron stepping down from position with Combate Americas

Campbell McLaren, the CEO of Combate Americas, said today in an interview with MMAUNO.com that Alberto El Patron, the figurehead president of his company, was stepping down from his position.

McLaren, who has staunchly defended Alberto at every turn, said that the decision was Alberto’s, and that he wanted to concentrate fully on his pro wrestling career.

Alberto was making a very strong salary for his figurehead role where his main job was to promote the brand, particularly in the Mexican media. Combate Americas is most popular in Mexico where it airs on TV Azteca, one of the country’s strongest stations, in a Friday night weekly time slot, with either a news show or a fight show.

“What Alberto is telling me is that his first love is wrestling,” said McLaren in the interview. “You know, his father was Dos Caras, a very famous wrestler and Saraya’s family is third generation English wrestlers, you know about, her, right? And so what Alberto has said to me, and we haven’t unveiled this yet, but we can talk about it, he’s probably stepping back his official roles from Combate and he’s going to focus more on wrestling for the next year or two.”

McLaren had called Alberto “El Presidente,” which was his nickname in the WWE locker room because he looked and carried himself like a political leader.

“I think he’s reaching a point in his career when he knows that the physical demands of wrestling are not what he wants to continue doing,” said McLaren. “But I think he knows he’s got a couple of years still left to keep maintaining his level of performance. It’s a very challenging enterprise and I think it’s very, very hard on the body and difficult to do. Very physical. Very athletic. So he’s kind of asked me if he can step away and with Saraya (girlfriend Paige), focus on wrestling.”

Alberto has been in and out of controversy for the past year.

Paige potentially facing battery charges in Orlando airport incident

Paige could potentially be facing charges stemming from the domestic violence incident with Alberto El Patron that took place at the Orlando International Airport earlier this month.

In a story that was first reported by Pro Wrestling Sheet, detectives at the Orlando Police Department have found that probable cause exists to charge Paige with domestic battery. The information has been forwarded to the state attorney’s office for review and to decide if charges will be filed.

The investigation into El Patron is still ongoing.

After initially claiming that her and El Patron were the ones to get police involved, Paige released a statement on Twitter last week that said she was the one who was held for potential battery charges after throwing a drink at El Patron. Police noted that El Patron was the only suspect listed at that time.

WWE has a zero-tolerance policy regarding domestic violence. The policy states that a performer would immediately be suspended if they’re arrested for such a matter. Upon a conviction, the performer would immediately be terminated. WWE also maintains the right to fine, suspend, or terminate a wrestler if “incontrovertible evidence of such illegal misconduct” is presented to them.

El Patron was suspended by Global Force Wrestling until the resolution of the investigation, though he still holds their Unified World Heavyweight title and isn’t being edited out of episodes of Impact during the suspension.

AUDIO: Jeff Jarrett addresses Alberto El Patron suspension

While most of the conversation was supposed to be about Global Force Wrestling’s post-Slammiversary plans and the company’s recent rebrand, Jeff Jarrett addressed Alberto El Patron’s suspension on a conference call with the pro wrestling media today.

GFW noted that their statement would be all they’re saying for now while requesting that questions about El Patron not be asked, but Jarrett called the situation with El Patron being investigated for domestic battery “unfortunate” and said that they’re continuing to dig into the matter.

One of the first questions asked was about whether El Patron would be edited out of upcoming episodes of Impact like TNA had to do with Hernandez when his contract with Lucha Underground prohibited him from appearing on TV. Jarrett said that the situations weren’t similar due to Hernandez not legally being allowed to be shown, then said that everyone knows that the incident happened after they taped and that he thought it would further damage their brand to edit footage out.

A question was later posed about whether El Patron would be stripped of the GFW Unified World Championship, with Jarrett saying that it hasn’t been addressed yet because it’s far from what’s most important right now.

Elsewhere on the call, Jarrett maintained that Anthem owns the “Broken Hardys” characters and stated that there’s been no agreement for The Hardys to acquire the rights to them.
