Ricky Starks on AEW Dynamite promo: ‘What you saw out there was me winging it’

Ricky Starks memorized exactly what he wanted to say in his promo on AEW Dynamite but when the moment came, he decided to “just wing” it instead.

After winning the Dynamite Diamond Battle Royal on Wednesday, Starks cut a promo on AEW World Champion, MJF, who he will face next week at Winter is Coming. He would later speak to Comicbook.com about his decision to abandon his original plans for the segment.

“I think you’ll hear a lot of wrestlers say, ‘Oh, I didn’t think of it. I didn’t plan it out, I didn’t write it out.’ And Cody [Rhodes] makes the same joke, but that’s bull,” Starks said. “Even the best promos had to have some type of structure to them. And I am somewhat in the same way, admittedly. I’m not one to really pull back the curtain on anything here, but yesterday, earlier in the day, I had wrote out this whole thing, and in my head memorized it and did all this, and stressed myself out, and then had a match to do. Anything could have gone wrong where I just forget it in the match.”

“I remember Max cutting that promo and saying these comments, and in that moment I was like, ‘I’ll just wing it. I’ll just wing it. I know where I want to go and what I want to get to, and I’ll just fill in the blanks.,'” Starks continued. “So what you saw out there was me winging it. That’s how I operate. Yes, I can come up with some lines and think about it, but for the most part, whatever I feel, I just say, and it comes off in that moment.”

Starks would continue to talk about the positive reception he’s received regarding the segment and other times that he’s spoken “from the heart” during promos.

“I’m not a stranger to this type of reception to a promo I’ve done,” Starks added. “Earlier in the year, after I lost the title to Hook, I had a similar promo. The common theme between all that is it’s just me really speaking from the heart in every single instance.”

MJF vs. Starks winner takes all match set for AEW Dynamite Winter is Coming

The AEW World Championship and Dynamite Diamond ring will be on the line in a winner takes all match next week at Winter is Coming.

As announced on this week’s Dynamite, MJF will defend both the AEW World title and the Dynamite Diamond against Ricky Starks on the December 14 Winter is Coming episode of Dynamite.

Starks earned the World title shot by virtue of winning the World title eliminator tournament last month, then won the Dynamite Diamond battle royale on this week’s Dynamite to earn the shot at the ring.

Also announced for Winter is Coming is the in-ring return of House of Black (Malakai Black, Buddy Matthews, and Brody King w/Julia Hart). No opponents were announced for HOB.

Already set for Winter is Coming is the fourth match in the best-of-seven series for the AEW World Trios Championship, with Death Triangle facing The Elite. Death Triangle holds a 2-1 series lead.

AEW Winter is Coming likely returning to Dallas area as annual event

The annual Winter is Coming edition of AEW Dynamite in December is likely to remain in the Dallas-Ft. Worth metroplex area of Texas, according to AEW head Tony Khan.

During an appearance with a local radio outlet to promote Wednesday’s AEW Grand Slam, Khan alluded to there being a “good chance” their December tradition returns to the area without giving a hard confirm.

“I really love this tradition we have built around the holidays and I love coming out in December to Dallas every year,” he said. “I have a good feeling about coming back and bringing Winter is Coming back to Dallas again this year. Keep up the good work watching Wednesday Night Dynamite and Friday Night Rampage. If the numbers on TNT and TBS stay where they are at and you all do a great job watching the shows and support us, why not? Let’s keep it going.”

Last year’s Winter is Coming was held in mid-December at Garland, Texas’ Curtis Culwell Center — a regular stop for AEW in the past.

Garland is roughly 20 miles outside of Dallas.

This year’s Winter is Coming will be the third in company history. The first was held at Daily’s Place in Jacksonville, Florida, due to the pandemic.

Khan is big on specific events returning to specific cities as a tradition like the Thanksgiving Eve edition of Dynamite (Chicago). All Out (Chicago), and Double or Nothing (Las Vegas).

Page, Danielson go to 60-minute draw at AEW Winter is Coming

The AEW World title is staying with Hangman Page for now as he and Bryan Danielson went to a one-hour draw at Wednesday’s Winter Is Coming edition of Dynamite in Garland, Texas.

The match was the longest in Dynamite history.

Both the champion and challenger had their opportunities to win in a physical match that spilled outside the ring at times. At one point, Page, bloodied earlier in the bout, hit a Deadeye on Danielson on the ring apron, but later missed an elbow drop to a prone Danielson on a ringside table.

The two exchanged finishers in the match’s closing minutes with neither man able to get the win. Page attempted a Buckshot lariat, but Danielson ensnared him with the LeBell Lock to counter. Page worked his way out and slingshotted Danielson over the top rope, but the challenger skinned the cat and came back in, only to be met by a Page clothesline. Page then hit the Buckshot, but was unable to pin Danielson before time ran out.

This was the first defense of the title and first match overall for Page since he won the title at November’s Full Gear. Danielson earned the shot with his win over Miro in the World title eliminator tournament final at the same pay-per-view.

With the draw, Danielson remains unbeaten since debuting for AEW in September. He went to a 30-minute draw with Kenny Omega at that month’s Grand Slam edition of Dynamite at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Queens, New York.

Hikaru Shida vs. Serena Deeb set for AEW Winter is Coming

A recent rivalry will continue on next Wednesday’s AEW Winter is Coming edition of Dynamite as Hikaru Shida will face Serena Deeb for a third time.

The two first met in October when Shida was on the cusp of winning her 50th match. However, Deeb spoiled the party and picked up the win. The two then rematched in the first round of the TBS title tournament a few weeks later with Shida picking up the victory which was her 50th. Deeb attacked Shida after the match, damaging her knee. That played into Shida’s loss to Nyla Rose in the quarterfinals of the tournament.

The show will also see MJF face Dante Martin for the Dynamite Diamond ring. The two were the final entrants left in Wednesday’s qualifying battle royal after Martin turned on Team Taz and eliminated Ricky Starks to end the match.

The matches join the already announced AEW World title match as Hangman Page defends against Bryan Danielson. It will be Page’s first defense while Danielson earned the shot by winning the recent World title eliminator tournament at November’s Full Gear.

Here’s the current card for next week’s show from Garland, Texas:

  • AEW World Champion Hangman Page vs. Bryan Danielson
  • MJF vs. Dante Martin for the Dynamite Diamond ring
  • Hikaru Shida vs. Serena Deeb

Page vs. Danielson World title match set for AEW Winter is Coming

A date has been set for the “Hangman” Adam Page vs. Bryan Danielson AEW World title match.

AEW president, CEO and general manager Tony Khan announced on Twitter that Page will defend the AEW World Championship against number one contender Bryan Danielson at the Winter is Coming edition of Dynamite on Wednesday, December 15 in Garland, Texas at the Curtis Culwell Center.

Page won the AEW World Championship from Kenny Omega at the Full Gear pay-per-view on November 13. At the same event, Danielson defeated Miro in the finals of an AEW World title eliminator tournament to set up the match. Page earned the title shot at Full Gear by winning a Casino Ladder Match on Dynamite’s second anniversary episode on October 6 as a surprise entrant.

Danielson faces Dark Order’s Alan Angels on tonight’s Dynamite episode. Page will be on commentary for the match.

Omega defeated Jon Moxley at the 2020 Winter is Coming to win the AEW World title and held it until losing to Page at Full Gear.

AEW announces ‘Winter is Coming’ event for December 2nd Dynamite

On Wednesday’s edition of Dynamite, AEW announced that the December 2nd edition of the show will be called “Winter is Coming”.

The show will be headlined by World Champion Jon Moxley defending his title against Kenny Omega in a rematch from Full Gear 2019 where Moxley beat Omega in an unsanctioned lights out match.

The two were set to have a contract signing Wednesday, but Moxley was shown laid out in the back bloodied up while Omega waited for him in the ring, showing no remorse.

Omega became the number one contender after winning the recent World title eliminator tournament. He defeated Sonny Kiss and Penta El Zero M to advance to the finals at Full Gear where he defeated former tag team partner Hangman Page to earn the title shot.

Moxley has held the title since February’s Revolution when he beat Chris Jericho for the championship. Jericho and Moxley remain the only two to ever hold the title.

No other matches were announced for the December 2nd show.
