Mark Davis wins National Championship at AEW Fairway to Hell

Mark Davis is the new AEW National Champion.

In the first match of the night on Saturday, May 9, at AEW Fairway to Hell, Jack Perry faced Davis with his AEW National title on the line.

However, toward the closing moments of the match, fans saw Don Callis call in a favor from Ricochet, who interfered and hit Perry with a golf club, costing him the title. Davis then proceeded to pin Perry to win the National title and his first-ever AEW singles championship.

Later, during a backstage segment, Callis and Davis met with Ricochet to determine a plan for the Don Callis family to team up with Ricochet’s Demand at AEW Double or Nothing. Perry also announced the Elite [Perry, The Young Bucks, and Kenny Omega] for Double or Nothing.

The history of the AEW National Championship

Location set for Ricochet’s AEW National Title defense against Jack Perry

Jack Perry will collide against AEW National Champion Ricochet in a rematch and now there’s a date attached.

Earlier this month, Perry earned another title shot by defeating Anthony Bowens on last Saturday’s Collision. Looking for another shot at the gold since then, he will now take on Ricochet on the February 4th edition of either AEW Dynamite/Collision in Las Vegas.

AEW will tape Collision on the same night after Dynamite in Las Vegas, and it is currently unknown which show the match will be part of.

Ricochet had previously defeated Perry and retained his title at this year’s AEW Dynamite New Year’s Smash. The 37-year-old Ricochet won the inaugural title at last November’s Full Gear in a Casino Gauntlet match.

Since winning it, Ricochet has defended it a total of six times. While he is enjoying his first AEW singles title reign, Perry is on the hunt for his third AEW singles title following his second TNT title run that ended in 2024.

Tony Khan says he’s talked to Billy Corgan over AEW National Championship

Tony Khan and Billy Corgan have talked things out.

During a livestream on Friday night, Khan said he talked to the NWA President over his introduction of a new championship, the AEW National title. After stressing that this would have a completely different lineage from the NWA’s version of the title, Khan said he and Corgan had a “nice conversation.”

“I ended up having a really nice conversation about it with the President of the NWA, Billy Corgan,” Khan said. “I have a lot of respect for him and a lot of respect for what he’s doing. I really love the traditions of pro wrestling and I had a really nice talk with Billy and we hadn’t talked in a long time so I think it was good for him to hear this. I respect him and I respect the NWA, and we’re trying to do something different here.”

When the National title was announced, it caused controversy with some NWA wrestlers, including current NWA National Champion Mike Mondo.

AEW’s latest title will be determined in a Casino Gauntlet match at Full Gear on November 22. Khan said during the stream that matches will soon take place to determine the first and second spots in the match.

AEW Full Gear notes: Tailgate Brawl, Casino Gauntlet match

Some notes ahead of AEW Full Gear.

During Saturday’s Collision, JetSpeed were interviewed after interfering in FTR’s match, leading to a surprise win by the Bang Bang Gang. After saying they weren’t done with FTR, both men expressed interest in participating in the Casino Gauntlet match at Full Gear, which will take place on November 22 in Newark, New Jersey. The winner of the match will be crowned the first-ever AEW National Champion.

Also on Collision, Max Caster & Anthony Bowens were interviewed. Both made it clear that they no longer wanted to team with one another, saying The Acclaimed were done. Bowens announced that his first step forward will be at the Full Gear Tailgate Brawl in two weeks. However, Lexi Nair made note that Khan has seen that whenever the two are together, ratings and merchandise go up, so if they plan on being at the Tailgate Brawl, it would have to be together.

After hearing that news, Bowens said he wanted the match canceled, with Caster agreeing. It wasn’t clear what match the two would be taking part in.

NWA champion responds to AEW creating National title

The NWA National Champion is not impressed with AEW creating its own National Championship.

NWA National Champion Mike Mondo responded to the creation of AEW’s latest title with a social media post on Wednesday night calling out AEW owner Tony Khan by name.

AEW introduced their version of the National Championship on Wednesday’s Dynamite and announced that the inaugural champ will be crowned in a Casino Gauntlet match at Full Gear with Bobby Lashley and Shelton Benjamin the first wrestlers set to compete in the bout.

Mondo, who has held the NWA National title since the promotion’s Anniversary Show in August, wrote on X:

Let me be CLEAR. There is only ONE NWA & there is only one PRESTIGIOUS National Championship that holds legit lineage & has for decades. So to Tony Khan or anyone else confused… here’s the legit title, with the company it belongs to & the legit National Champion! MY NAME IS MIKE MONDO.

Mondo, 42, is perhaps best remembered as a member of the Spirit Squad in WWE in the 2000s.

AEW creating National title, reveals how inaugural champion will be determined

AEW is adding yet another new title to the mix with the new men’s National Championship.

Initially announced prior to Wednesday’s Dynamite by AEW head Tony Khan, the inaugural champion will be decided in a Casino Gauntlet match at this month’s AEW Full Gear.

Khan appeared on an X stream alongside Tony Schiavone, saying that he has missed seeing the National Championship on TBS TV as the original NWA version dates back to Georgia Championship Wrestling adne eventually making its way to Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling.

The title was merged in 1986 in a unification bout that took place between then-United States Champion Nikita Koloff and then-National Wahoo McDaniel in a bout Koloff won. The merged title became the U.S. title that currently resides in WWE.

Khan said he has wanted to have the title for a long time, so he was bringing it back. He said it will be defended across multiple promotions like Ring of Honor and NJPW Strong in addition to AEW.

The first several men announced for the match are Bobby Lashley, Shelton Benjamin and Ricochet. The three men, in addition to MVP and the Gates of Agony had a verbal confrontation on Dynamite as their feud continues.

It’s the fourth title Khan has introduced this year including the AEW Women’s World Tag Team titles, the AEW Unified title (the merged Continental and International titles), and the Ring of Honor Women’s Pure title.
