September 18, 2006 Observer Newsletter: Kurt Angle, PWG

With his body breaking down, and pain killer issues now public after being fired on 8/25 by World Wrestling Entertainment, Kurt Angle finds himself in a unique situation.

He is now the single most in demand individual, perhaps in the history of the industry. He now has the ability to, at least on a short-term basis, make more money than he ever has before, and perhaps, in the process, destroy his body even farther. While few will publicly say so, virtually every major promotion from Ring of Honor to several groups in Japan to UFC and numerous other MMA groups, and everyone in between have expressed everything from curiosity to extreme interest in using Angle as soon as he heals up from his current batch of injuries. Nobody has said so publicly. Privately, everyone, and I mean everyone you can think of, is trying to contact him and talking about ideas on how he could be used.

While he can write his ticket in pro wrestling, from the ability to work a light schedule for big money in Japan or TNA, it is in MMA where he has the ability to get a one-day payday that could very conceivably approach his annual $1 million salary from working in WWE.

Globe Theatre in Los Angeles remaining open

Globe Theatre in Los Angeles will not be closing its doors after all.

A day after Prestige Wrestling said that they had been told that the venue would be closing immediately, the promotion posted a notice that they have been informed that the Theatre will remain open for the foreseeable future.

Globe Theatre has been the home of PWG events since 2018, has hosted a WOW taping, and numerous other events from a variety of wrestling companies including a joint NJPW/Impact event.

Prestige posted:

****COMBAT PRINCESS USA UPDATE NUMBER 2***

11/15/2023

After searching for a new venue and confirming a new location for our joint show with TJPW, we were told tonight by venue management………

THE GLOBE THEATRE WILL NOW REMAIN OPEN!

We’re not going to get into any of their private details (as we know very little about it), but we have been told contracts are in place that will allow The Globe Theatre to remain open for years to come.

COMBAT PRINCESS USA will take place as planned on December 14th in Los Angeles, CA at The Globe Theatre!

We’re very sorry for any concern and we look forward to an incredible show!

PWG gives update on status of promotion

In a social media post overnight, PWG gave an update on the status of the promotion.

PWG owner Super Dragon explained that there haven’t been many PWG events this year because his girlfriend is battling an aggressive form of cancer. Because of that, it’s been difficult for him to focus on anything else. Things have recently taken a turn for the worse and Super Dragon needs to take some time away from pro wrestling.

Super Dragon noted that there will be no more PWG shows for the remainder of 2023. The promotion will return “as soon as possible in 2024.”

I know a lot of you have been wondering what is going on with PWG and why there haven’t been many events this year. My girlfriend has been very sick and battling an aggressive cancer since earlier this year. It’s been incredibly difficult for me to focus on anything else.

Recently things took a turn for the worse, and I need to take some time away from wrestling. There will be no more PWG events this year. We will return as soon as possible in 2024. Thank you for all your support.

“My thoughts are with Danny and girlfriend, he’s always been good to me & I’m thinking of them,” Joey Janela responded.

Battle of Los Angeles 2023 nights one and two and Mystery Vortex 2023 are the only PWG events that have taken place this year. Those shows were held in January and August.

Jon Moxley makes PWG debut at TWENTY: Mystery Vortex

Jon Moxley made his PWG debut at TWENTY: Mystery Vortex Sunday night in Los Angeles.

Moxley’s debut came on the 20th anniversary show for the country’s most prestigious independent wrestling promotion, with the former WWE & AEW Champion taking on Titus Alexander in a winning effort in the show’s second contest.

In the Mystery Vortex main event, PWG World Champion Daniel Garcia defeated Speedball Mike Bailey in a 60-minute iron man match, winning four falls to three in sudden death overtime after the 60 minutes elapsed.

AEW was represented in every bout on the six-match card, with appearances from Moxley, Garcia, Konosuke Takeshita, Roderick Strong, Evil Uno, and Rey Fenix.

Sunday’s event was the first run by PWG since the 2023 Battle of Los Angeles in January.

Below are full results from the Globe Theatre in Los Angeles:

  • Konosuke Takeshita defeated Rey Horus
  • Jon Moxley defeated Titus Alexander
  • Roderick Strong defeated Michael Oku
  • Evil Uno, Maki Itoh & Aramis defeated Masha Slamovich, Peter Avalon & Latigo
  • Rey Fenix defeated Black Taurus
  • 60-minute iron man match for the PWG World Championship: Daniel Garcia defeated “Speedball” Mike Bailey 4-3 in sudden death overtime to retain the title

PWG announces TWENTY: Mystery Vortex anniversary event

PWG will hold their next event in August.

The company announced on Tuesday night that they will hold TWENTY: Mystery Vortex on August 13. The theme of PWG’s Mystery Vortex shows are that no matches or talent are announced for the show until wrestlers head to the ring for the match. It will also serve as their twentieth anniversary event, with their first show taking place in July of 2003.

This is the first time that PWG has run a show since their Battle of Los Angeles tournament that they held on January 7 and 8 of this year. In the main event of the second night, Speedball Mike Bailey defeated Konosuke Takeshita to win the tournament.

The last Mystery Vortex event took place in August of 2021, the first event held after PWG shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. On that show, Bandio defeated Black Taurus to retain the PWG World Championship. Other matches had Orange Cassidy defeating Evil Uno, Aramis & Rey Horus defeating Myron Reed and Trey Miguel, and Jonathan Gresham defeating Lee Moriarty.

PWG Battle of Los Angeles night two results: A winner is crowned

The winner of PWG’s Battle of Los Angeles tournament was crowned on Sunday night at the Globe Theatre.

Here are results and Dave Meltzer’s live notes from the show:

BOLA tournament match: Mike Bailey defeated Jordynne Grace

Really Bailey won via Flamingo Driver. Grace with power moves and chokes and working on hand. Bailey with nice kicks and dives.

BOLA tournament match: Konosuke Takeshita defeated Titus Alexander

Takeshita won with a jumping knee. Great match. Alexander got a ton of believable offense. Lots of German suplexes, hard kicks, and knees. Alexander did strong and similar moves as Takeshita.

BOLA tournament match: Bryan Keith defeated Masha Slamovich

Eddie Kingston was on commentary for the match.

Keith won with a running knee. Very physical. Some great near falls that really popped the crowd. Keith’s mouth was busted open. Both looked good. Crowd was into Masha. Both bowed to each other after.

BOLA tournament match: Komander defeated Bandido

Komander hit a ropewalk shooting star for the pin.

Bandido came in hurting. He went heel, but he was hurting. Lots of great spots but several botches. Ref counted three on a near fall early minutes in and took it back.

BOLA tournament match: Mike Bailey defeated Shun Skywalker

Best match of the show so far. Bailey won with a shooting star press double knees to the chest.

Lots of great moves. Skywalker atoned for his performance last night and looked great here.

Latigo & Black Taurus defeated Rey Horus & Aramis

Taurus pinned Horus after a powerbomb into a backbreaker and Awful Waffle.

Excellent lucha libre match, great dives and moves. The best match of the night so far.

BOLA tournament match: Konosuke Takeshita defeated Komander

Takeshita won with a backslide. Too short, but was tremendous while it lasted.

BOLA tournament match: Mike Bailey defeated Bryan Keith

Great match. Bailey won with a 450 double knees to the back.

Keith got way over and “please come back” chants.

Very physical and everything was crisp. Maybe the second best tournament match of the weekend.

Chris Jericho, Daniel Garcia, Sammy Guevara, Matt Menard, & Angelo Parker (with Anna Jay, Tay Melo, and Jake Hager) defeated Jonathan Gresham, Evil Uno, SB Kento, Michael Oku, and Kevin Blackwood

Super entertaining. They treated this like a major match, all action. They all did the slow motion spot for minutes until Jericho started chopping Oku hard. Jericho and Oku were the highlight, but Jericho gave Blackwood a lot of near falls on him before the bay shot by Garcia set up the Judas Effect.

Jericho called it modern ECW.

Fans wanted Daddy Magic talk.

Fans threw money.

BOLA finals: Mike Bailey defeated Konosuke Takeshita to win the tournament

They pulled out all the stops here, lots of innovative stuff.

Super match, but they had a hard time following the prior match, and I think people were surprised Takeshita didn’t win.

Bailey won with shooting star double knees and a Flamingo Driver.

Bailey said the best wrestlers are in PWG not for the money, but because the greatest supporters of pro wrestling are here. He said this is also Takeshita’s win.

Don Callis was there scouting Takeshita in a segment being filmed for AEW.

Chris Jericho makes PWG debut at Battle of Los Angeles

AEW’s Chris Jericho made his PWG debut at Sunday night’s Battle of Los Angeles event.

Appearing alongside the entire Jericho Appreciation Society faction, Jericho teamed with JAS’s Daniel Garcia, Sammy Guevara, Matt Menard, and Angelo Parker (seconded by Anna Jay, Tay Melo, and Jake Hager) against Jonathan Gresham, Evil Uno, SB Kento, Michael Oku, and Kevin Blackwood in a 10-man tag bout.

Jericho pinned Blackwood after hitting the Judas Effect.

Dave Meltzer’s live notes on the match:

Super entertaining. They treated this like a major match, all action. They all did the slow motion spot for minutes until Jericho started chopping Oku hard. Jericho and Oku were the highlight, but Jericho gave Blackwood a lot of near falls on him before the bay shot by Garcia set up the Judas Effect.

Jericho called it modern ECW.

Fans wanted Daddy Magic talk.

Fans threw money.

The tag team bout was set up after an angle involving Garcia. Garcia was announced as teaming with Gresham and Blackwood against Shun Skywalker, Uno, and Oku, but Garcia stated that he only teams with sports entertainers. The JAS then entered for the match.

PWG Battle of Los Angeles night one results: The tournament begins

Here are results from Saturday’s PWG Battle of Los Angeles night one event. The tournament will conclude Sunday night.

Masha Slamovich defeated Alex Shelley

Slamovich scored the win after countering Shelley’s Emerald Flowsion with a cradle.

Bryan Keith defeated SB Kento

Keith connected with a hard knee and powerbomb to advance. Real good, crowd changed “both these guys.”

Kommander defeated Latigo

Excellent match. Many amazing moves by Kommander including a rope walk fosbury flop and rope walk shooting star springboard poisonrana, and also a double springboard tight hurricanrana. Kommander won with a ropewalk shooting star press into a rolling cradle although Latigo’s shoulder wasn’t down.

Jordynne Grace defeated Jonathan Gresham

Unique match that built around her power spots and his technical wrestling. She did slaps and forearms while he did arm work. Last few minutes were great. Gresham had the European clutch and Grace turned it into a choke for the submission. Hard match to do, but very good.

Shun Skywalker defeated Aramis

Skywalker won with a spinning powerbomb. There was nothing wrong but they didn’t mesh well. Skywalker didn’t get over and Aramis didn’t shine the way he normally does.

Konosuke Takeshita defeated Michael Oku

Best match. Fans were throwing money into the ring for a non-Mexican match and got a standing ovation, with Oku crying. Takeshita got the win with a jumping knee and an explosive running knee. Really hard hitting, Oku got over great.

Titus Alexander defeated PWG Champion Daniel Garcia by DQ

Garcia was disqualified for a belt shot in front of the referee. Super match. Garcia was amazing working as a Jay White-style heel. Crowd got way behind Alexander, who is really talented. Easily the most intense fight of the show.

Bandido defeated Taurus and El Hijo del Vikingo

Bandido pinned Taurus with a tombstone. A match filled with insane spots and dives. Amazing match — not perfect but the degree of difficulty for so much was so high. They tried so much that was impossible. They tried so much new stuff. You could see they wanted to have a legendary match. It was amazing.
