NJPW has added Hiroshi Tanahashi and Tomohiro Ishii to the lineup for their August 16 NJPW Strong taping in California.
The appearances will mark the first NJPW Strong appearances for Tanahashi and Ishii. Strong has primarily used a United States-based roster in its year of existence. Rare appearances from Satoshi Kojima and Yuji Nagata have been exceptions.
Two days earlier at NJPW Resurgence in Los Angeles, Tanahashi will challenge Lance Archer for the IWGP United States Championship, while Ishii will face Impact Wrestling’s Moose on that show.
The taping will be the first ticketed NJPW Strong taping in history and tickets for the events have sold out.
NJPW released a video message from Tanahashi to promote the Strong appearance. The video can be seen below.
Here is the full talent list advertised for the Fighting Spirit Unleashed episodes of NJPW Strong to be taped on August 16:
A new match has been announced for NJPW Resurgence at The Torch at LA Coliseum on August 14.
NJPW’s Tomohiro Ishii will take on Impact Wrestling’s Moose at Resurgence. NJPW made the announcement this evening.

Ishii vs. Moose is the sixth match announced for Resurgence. The show will air on NJPW World and FITE TV on Saturday, August 14 at 11 p.m. Eastern time.
Here is the lineup so far:
NEVER Openweight Championship: Jay White (c) vs. David Finlay
IWGP United States Championship: Lance Archer (c) vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi

In the semi-main, Rocky Romero and Fred Rosser will team against Ren Narita and Alex Coughlin.
In the opener, LA Dojo trainee Kevin Knight will take on CZW and WxW veteran Alexander James. This will be the NJPW Strong debut for James.
This cycle of Strong episodes borrows the Summer Struggle theme from the main NJPW unit. This week’s episode will be night one of Road to Summer Struggle USA.
Strong airs Fridays at 10 p.m. Eastern time on NJPW World and is available on demand shortly after airing.
Here is Friday’s full lineup:
NJPW Strong Road to Summer Struggle USA, Friday, August 6 —
Jorel Nelson & Royce Isaacs vs. JR Kratos & Danny Limelight
Rocky Romero & Fred Rosser vs. Ren Narita & Alex Coughlin
NJPW has revealed the full lineups for their next eight Summer Struggle shows.
The most notable items from the reveal are the absences of Kazuchika Okada and Hiroshi Tanahashi.
Tanahashi will be in the United States to face Lance Archer for the IWGP United States Championship at Resurgence on Saturday, August 14. Okada is still set to face Jeff Cobb at Wrestle Grand Slam in MetLife Dome on Saturday, September 4.
A NEVER Openweight Six-Man Tag Team Championship match has been added to the August 10 event, with Hirooki Goto, YOSHI-HASHI and Tomohiro Ishii defending against Tetsuya Naito, SANADA and BUSHI.
Most of the top matches for this next leg of the Summer Struggle tour had already been announced, as the Super Junior Tag League will fill a big portion of the cards. The majority of the matches announced are undercard tag bouts.
The shows will be held between Saturday, August 7 and Tuesday, August 17.
Here are the lineups:
NJPW Summer Struggle, Saturday, August 7, 5:30 a.m. Eastern time on NJPW World —

Super Jr. Tag League: El Desperado & Yoshinobu Kanemaru vs. Ryusuke Taguchi & Master Wato
Super Jr. Tag League: Robbie Eagles & Tiger Mask vs. Gedo & Dick Togo
Hirooki Goto, YOSHI-HASHI, Tomohiro Ishii & Tomoaki Honma vs. Shingo Takagi, Tetsuya Naito, SANADA & BUSHI
NJPW has added a NEVER Openweight Six-Man Tag Team Championship match to their August 10 Summer Struggle event in the Yokohama Budokan.
NEVER Six-Man Champions Hirooki Goto, YOSHI-HASHI and Tomohiro Ishii will defend the titles against the Los Ingobernables de Japon trio of Tetsuya Naito, SANADA and BUSHI. The match was set up following the main event of Sunday’s Summer Struggle show.
After Goto, YOSHI-HASHI and Ishii retained their titles with a win over Taichi, Zack Sabre Jr. and Minoru Suzuki, Naito, SANADA and BUSHI made their way to the ring to declare themselves the next challengers. Goto and YOSHI-HASHI made it clear in post-match comments that they would accept the challenge, and now the match is official.
A non-title match between IWGP World Heavyweight Champion Shingo Takagi and Yujiro Takahashi has also been announced for the August 10 event.

Jon Moxley and a mystery partner vs. The Good Brothers (Karl Anderson & Doc Gallows) has been officially added to the August 14 NJPW Resurgence event.
After Moxley issued a challenge on social media on Friday, Gallows and Anderson accepted the challenge on Sunday in the same fashion in this tweet from the NJoA Twitter account.
Gallows and Anderson are coming off a win in the finals of NJPW Strong’s Tag Team Turbulence tournament,, while Moxley lost the IWGP United States Championship to Lance Archer in a Texas death match in his last outing on the July 21 AEW Dynamite Fyter Fest.
Moxley and partner vs. Gallows and Anderson is the fifth official match for Resurgence. Here is the full lineup to this point:
NJPW Resurgence, Saturday, August 14, 11 p.m. Eastern time on NJPW World & FITE TV —
NEVER Openweight Championship: Jay White (c) vs. David Finlay
IWGP United States Championship: Lance Archer (c) vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi
Jon Moxley & a mystery partner vs. The Good Brothers
Fred Rosser, Rocky Romero & Wheeler Yuta vs. Clark Connors, Ren Narita & TJP
This was a solid opening match. Bateman stands a good five or six inches above Young Lion Knight. In an early exchange, Knight went for a headlock but lost contact with Bateman, who then slipped around back with a waistlock on Knight. He’d later blast Knight with a hard elbow that knocked Knight off his feet.
Bateman slowly worked Knight over with a mix of fundamental wrestling and top-shelf cheap shots and holds. It was subtle, but at one point Bateman locked in a neck crank that was really made to look like a rear chinlock.
Knight landed a beautiful dropkick in an explosion of a comeback. I think “beautiful” is the correct term for this particular dropkick, too. Imagine the height that SANADA or Kazuchika Okada get with their dropkicks with a moonsault landing, a lá Paul London.
Knight landed a basement spear for two. Bateman came back moments later with a rolling elbow, then put Knight away with a tombstone piledriver for the win.
Karl Fredericks, Fred Rosser & Adrian Quest defeated West Coast Wrecking Crew (Jorel Nelson and Royce Isaacs) & Misterioso
Quest and “Big Papi Pump ” Misterioso were in first for their teams, though it was Misterioso and Fred Rosser who were the first to leave an impression. Rosser blocked a few kicks from Misterioso before NJoA’s resident luchador took Rosser out with a handspring back elbow. He then tagged out to Isaacs of West Coast Wrecking Crew, who’d face-mash Rosser a couple times upon entry; “Mr. No-Days-Off ” did not like that, and would pay it back with a couple of hip drops. These two had natural chemistry together.
Later in the match, Nelson and Misterioso darted across the ring to take out Fredericks and Rosser, knocking them off the apron. Fredericks later tagged in and cleaned house, taking out Isaacs. He did a spinebuster. Nelson dove off the ropes and kind of tagged in Isaacs on his way down onto Fredericks. Rosser broke up the pin to make the save for his team. Quest did an Asai moonsault onto the floor onto WCWC, and later Fredericks would pick up the win for his team, pinning Misterioso after Manifest Destiny in the end.
Tag Team Turbulence finals: The Good Brothers (Karl Anderson and Doc Gallows) defeated Violence Unlimited (Brody King & Chris Dickinson)
Kevin Kelly called this an “all-star match” earlier on in the night, with IMPACT’s Good Brothers taking on ROH’s Violence Unlimited inside a New Japan ring.
“Dirty Daddy” Dickinson and “Machine Gun” Anderson were in first for their respective teams. They took their time early on, both teams in no hurry to rush through the match. Dickinson scored early on after using a dragon screw leg whip and single-leg crab on Anderson before tagging out to his partner, Brody King. Anderson immediately rolled back to the blue corner and tagged in Doc Gallows. Gallows might actually be a few inches taller than the 6’5” King. They banged into each other a couple of times before they started trading blows. King landed a cross-body block off the ropes. It was around this point that Kevin Kelly made a reference to King’s band, God’s Hate, which I very much enjoyed.
Gallows and Dickinson then went at it, with Gallows working over Dickinson until Dickinson returned fire with a dropkick off the ropes. He then tagged back out to King, who came in and did a springboard double-armdrag to the Good Bros. I don’t think he’s ever done this spot on Strong, but he did bust it out a few times while on tour with NJPW in 2019 during their Best of the Super Juniors, which Milano Collection AT lost his mind for on commentary.
When Gallows and Anderson slid to the floor, King went right after them, skipping over the top corner post before launching himself onto both with a somersault cannonball, similar to what Jushin Liger often did. King moves like he’s two feet shorter and 100 lbs. lighter than he actually is, and it’s always amazing to watch. He earned a two-count after planting Anderson with a Black Hole Slam.
King tagged out to Dickinson, but when King hoisted Anderson up for another slam while still in the ring, Anderson raked King’s eyes, forcing King to let him go. From here, Anderson tagged out to Gallows and the Good Brothers went back to working over Dickinson. They used a back suplex + neckbreaker drop combo for two. Dickinson answered back with a swinging DDT that’d make El Samurai proud.
When Dickinson went for his running Death Valley Bomb finish on Anderson, Gallows broke it up. The Good Brothers then put Dickinson away with the Magic Killer to win the match and the tournament. The Good Brothers are the inaugural winners of NJoA’s first Tag Team Turbulence tournament.
Former NJPW president and current NJoA official Kaname Tezuka presented the Good Brothers their Tag Team Turbulence trophies inside the ring after the match. Anderson cut a brief promo afterwards stating that the Good Brothers want the IWGP Tag Team championships and that it didn’t matter which city they’d wrestle for them in Japan because when the Good Brothers want something, they get it.
Final thoughts:
While tonight’s episode was solid, as per usual, it didn’t have the flare NJoA might have hoped for. Each of the Tag Team Turbulence matches over the last three weeks have been very good, but none were outstanding. The tournament was essentially an interesting albeit mildly tedious way of bringing the Good Brothers back into the fold without the booking feeling too forced, but even still, in the end, that’s sort of what the tournament felt like, an angle for Gallows and Anderson to pump them up for their next tour of Japan, whenever that may be.
King shined the brightest in the main event, but the match as a whole felt sort of flat and would most definitely have benefited from having an audience.
In issuing the challenge, Moxley said that wherever his travels take him in the sport of wrestling, he will settle scores. He said whether it takes hours or years, he will eventually get you. Moxley said that he has a little bit of business with “these Bullet Club-type guys” and laid out the challenge for August 14.
Moxley said that he was planning to meet a buddy for beers in Los Angeles that night and decided to make it a two-for-one. He challenged Gallows and Anderson to meet him at Resurgence and promised them a surprise.
While Moxley’s partner is uncertain, we know for sure that it will not be fellow Death Rider Shota Umino. Umino was pulled from the Resurgence event due to travel restrictions between the United Kingdom and the United States.
Here is the card for Resurgence so far:
NJPW Resurgence, Saturday, August 14, 11 p.m. Eastern time on NJPW World & FITE TV —
NEVER Openweight Championship: Jay White (c) vs. David Finlay
IWGP United States Championship: Lance Archer (c) vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi
Jon Moxley & a mystery partner vs. The Good Brothers
Fred Rosser, Rocky Romero & Wheeler Yuta vs. Clark Connors, Ren Narita & TJP
NJPW has announced that Shota Umino will no longer be a part of the Resurgence event scheduled for Saturday, August 14 in Los Angeles at The Torch at LA Coliseum.
Umino is currently on excursion to the United Kingdom and RevPro Wrestling. NJPW said in their statement that travel restrictions between the UK and the United States have made it impossible for Umino to attend.
Additionally, Umino has been pulled from the NJPW Strong tapings set for California on Monday, August 16. Those tapings will be the first ticketed shows in the history of NJPW Strong.
Umino has not made an appearance in an NJPW ring since leaving for his international excursion in September 2019.
Umino and Jon Moxley made up the short-lived and popular Death Riders tag team in the summer of 2019. Moxley took Umino under his wing in storyline after defeating the Young Lion at NJPW Dominion 2019 in Osaka.
NJPW Resurgence, Saturday, August 14, 11 p.m. Eastern time on NJPW World & FITE TV —
NEVER Openweight Championship: Jay White (c) vs. David Finlay
IWGP United States Championship: Lance Archer (c) vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi
Jon Moxley & a mystery partner vs. The Good Brothers
Fred Rosser, Rocky Romero & Wheeler Yuta vs. Clark Connors, Ren Narita & TJP
Doc Gallows and Karl Anderson have won the NJPW Strong Tag Team Turbulence tournament.
The Good Brothers defeated Violence Unlimited (Brody King & Chris Dickinson) in 10:59 in the tournament finals on this week’s Strong. Anderson pinned Dickinson after hitting a Magic Killer to claim victory.
Following their win, Anderson cut a promo and listed off a series of cities in Japan. He said The Good Brothers are number one and are coming for the IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Championship.
The Good Brothers outlasted Clark Connors and TJP in round one of the tournament, Yuji Nagata and Ren Narita in the semifinals, then defeated King and Dickinson in the finals.
Tag Team Turbulence marked the first NJPW action for Gallows and Anderson since leaving the company for WWE back in February 2016.
In addition to working for NJPW, Gallows and Anderson appear weekly on AEW Dynamite. They are also Impact Wrestling World Tag Team Champions, winning the titles at Slammiversary earlier this month.
The NJPW Summer Struggle tour continued today with the first of three consecutive nights in Korakuen Hall in Tokyo.
An elimination match pitting members of Los Ingobernables de Japon against a Bullet Club team headlined today’s event.
The tour continues Saturday and Sunday. Sunday is the bigger show, with a NEVER Six-Man Tag title match, plus Yota Tsuji and Yuya Uemura’s final matches before their excursions.
A new match for the IWGP United States title has been announced for NJPW Resurgence.
Hiroshi Tanahashi appeared via video on tonight’s Dynamite, issuing the challenge. In the video, Tanahashi said the US title has a charm to it, and mentioned his other championship accomplishments in the past. But he’s never held the US title, and wants to add that to his championship legacy. After Dynamite ended, the full video was posted to NJPW’s social media, with Tanahashi saying the match would take place at Resurgence at the Torch at the Los Angeles Coliseum.
NJPW’s social media later made the match official for August 14. Tanahashi has not appeared in the US since February of 2020, participating in the New Beginning in USA 2020 tour.
Other matches already announced for Resurgence include:
Jay White vs. David Finlay for the NEVER Openweight title
Alex Coughlin vs. Karl Fredericks
Rocky Romero, Fred Rosser, and Wheeler Yuta vs. TJP, Clark Connors, and Ren Narita
NJPW has made the first two match announcements for Wrestle Grand Slam in MetLife Dome night one on September 4.
In a rematch from last Sunday’s Wrestle Grand Slam in Tokyo Dome, Kazuchika Okada will face Jeff Cobb. Okada was victorious at Tokyo Dome, pinning Cobb with a quick cradle. Cobb then attacked Okada at Tuesday’s Summer Struggle event in Korakuen Hall to set up the rematch.
Also announced for MetLife Dome, Chase Owens will defend the KOPW 2021 provisional title against former title holder Toru Yano. A stipulation will be added to this match at a later date. Owens won a 22-man New Japan Ranbo at the Wrestle Grand Slam in Tokyo Dome to claim the provisional KOPW title.
Wrestle Grand Slam in MetLife Dome is a two-night event. Three IWGP title matches have already been announced for night two. Here are the cards so far:
NJPW Wrestle Grand Slam in MetLife Dome, Saturday, September 4, 4 a.m. Eastern time on NJPW World —
Kazuchika Okada vs. Jeff Cobb
KOPW 2021: Chase Owens (c) vs. Toru Yano
NJPW Wrestle Grand Slam in MetLife Dome, Sunday, September 5, 2 a.m. Eastern time on NJPW World —
IWGP World Heavyweight Championship: Shingo Takagi (c) vs. EVIL
IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Championship: Taichi & Zack Sabre Jr. (c) vs. Tetsuya Naito & SANADA vs. Hirooki Goto & YOSHI-HASHI
IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship: Robbie Eagles (c) vs. Hiromu Takahashi
The NJPW Summer Struggle tour continued today in Korakuen Hall in Tokyo.
The only notable angle on the show came after Kazuchika Okada was victorious in a six-man tag. His Tokyo Dome opponent from this past Sunday, Jeff Cobb, appeared and laid Okada out with his Tour of the Islands finisher. That program will likely continue until the September 4 and September 5 Wrestle Grand Slam in MetLife Dome events.
After EVIL and Dick Togo attacked IWGP World Heavyweight Champion Shingo Takagi at Wrestle Grand Slam in Tokyo Dome, Shingo teamed with BUSHI to face EVIL and Togo in today’s main event.
Shingo will defend the IWGP World title against EVIL in the main event of Wrestle Grand Slam in MetLife Dome on Sunday, September 5.
After two days off, NJPW returns Friday, Saturday and Sunday with three shows. All of the events will also be held at Korakuen Hall and will begin at 5:30 a.m. Eastern time.
Two matches have been added to Friday’s NJPW Strong Tag Team Turbulence finals.
A trios match with Karl Fredericks, Fred Rosser and Adrian Quest taking on Jorel Nelson, Royce Isaacs and Misterioso has been announced. Fredericks will face Alex Coughlin at NJPW Resurgence in Los Angeles on August 14, while Rosser will be in a trios match on that show.
In Friday’s opener, Kevin Knight will face Bateman. Bateman defeated Knight’s tag partner The DKC earlier this month on Strong.
Already set, The Good Brothers (Karl Anderson & Doc Gallows) will take on Violence Unlimited (Brody King & Chris Dickinson) in the Tag Team Turbulence finals.
Strong airs Fridays at 10 p.m. Eastern time on NJPW World and is available on demand shortly after airing.
