FIGURE FOUR WEEKLY: Figure Four Weekly 7/10/2017: What’s next for Samoa Joe?

While the question of whether that was actually a double-turn with Roman Reigns and Braun Strowman was the most interesting question coming out of Great Balls of Fire, the biggest long-term issue may be what’s next for Samoa Joe after his main event with Brock Lesnar. Lesnar vs. Joe offered few surprises, mostly delivering on what everyone thought it would be. Joe was a credible threat to Lesnar (despite having to cheat to get most of his offense) before losing in about six minutes. The match felt like the big fight that it was built up to be and Joe more than held his own.

WEDNESDAY NEWS UPDATE

WWE

  • After Jeff Jarrett maintained that Anthem owns the rights to the “Broken Hardys” characters and said that The Hardys haven’t agreed to purchase them on a conference call today, Reby Hardy struck back on Twitter. She wrote: “We had agreement terms as of LAST WEEK. Included non-disparagement clause to the tune of 5k every time I tweet something about TNA…but according to @RealJeffJarrett, there is nothing ? OKAY ! Who’s up for another run of #F*ckThatOwl shirts ? They’ll be up by 2mor. I haven’t said anything FOR WEEKS. Meanwhile, Jeff, Dutch & Ed all can’t seem to be able to keep us out of their mouths. Snakes.”
  • Paige took to Twitter again to try and explain the domestic violence incident with Alberto El Patron after her first account was proven to be inaccurate. She claimed that she was the one being held for battery charges because she threw a drink at El Patron, but Orlando Police told Pro Wrestling Sheet that El Patron is the only suspect listed.
  • As expected, SmackDown ratings were up following last week’s Fourth of July episode. The show averaged 2.465 million viewers, up from the 2.329 million that it did last week.
  • WWE confirmed Kay Lee Ray and Ayesha Raymond as the latest official entrants for the Mae Young Classic.
  • Lita and Madusa joined Jim Ross on the latest episode of his podcast to preview the MYC.
  • Sami Zayn announced that he’s starting a campaign with the Syrian American Medical Society to raise funds for a mobile medical clinic in Syria.
  • Becky Lynch got into a Twitter exchange with the UFC’s Cris Cyborg. Cyborg tweeted: “If you are smart @TripleH you Don’t let @BeckyLynchWWE anywhere near the ring with me! Ireland can’t handle another star losing this summer.” And Lynch responded: “Are you sure Dana would let you? Seeing as he doesn’t seem to let you do much else?”

  • Reby Hardy wasn’t the only person who took exception to Jeff Jarrett’s conference call, with Shane Helms tweeting that Jarrett would “rather climb a tree to tell a lie than stay on the ground and tell the truth” in response to Jarrett saying that Helms and other agents were let go because they had too many of them.
  • The New York Times has a video and article advocating for pro wrestling as a form of storytelling.

UFC/MMA

  • If the first stop on the Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor press conference tour was a letdown at all, today’s event in Toronto more than made up for it. McGregor was at his absolute best, with him insulting Showtime to Stephen Espinoza’s (their vice president) face after believing that they cut his microphone yesterday. McGregor also insulted Mayweather for not being able to read. At one point, there was a “pay your taxes” chant directed at Mayweather. Mayweather apologized to Dana White for anything bad he’s ever said about him and said that they’re the ones with the money instead of McGregor.
  • Showtime issued a statement saying that they didn’t intentionally cut anyone’s microphone.
  • The UFC has another video blog with McGregor and White that focuses on the first stop of the tour.
  • Mayweather said that the fight against McGregor will be his last because he can’t push his body anymore.

AUDIO: Jeff Jarrett addresses Alberto El Patron suspension

While most of the conversation was supposed to be about Global Force Wrestling’s post-Slammiversary plans and the company’s recent rebrand, Jeff Jarrett addressed Alberto El Patron’s suspension on a conference call with the pro wrestling media today.

GFW noted that their statement would be all they’re saying for now while requesting that questions about El Patron not be asked, but Jarrett called the situation with El Patron being investigated for domestic battery “unfortunate” and said that they’re continuing to dig into the matter.

One of the first questions asked was about whether El Patron would be edited out of upcoming episodes of Impact like TNA had to do with Hernandez when his contract with Lucha Underground prohibited him from appearing on TV. Jarrett said that the situations weren’t similar due to Hernandez not legally being allowed to be shown, then said that everyone knows that the incident happened after they taped and that he thought it would further damage their brand to edit footage out.

A question was later posed about whether El Patron would be stripped of the GFW Unified World Championship, with Jarrett saying that it hasn’t been addressed yet because it’s far from what’s most important right now.

Elsewhere on the call, Jarrett maintained that Anthem owns the “Broken Hardys” characters and stated that there’s been no agreement for The Hardys to acquire the rights to them.

GFW suspends Alberto El Patron until resolution of investigation

Global Force Wrestling has suspended Alberto El Patron until the investigation into him for domestic battery is resolved.

The company issued a statement today: “Global Force Wrestling has indefinitely suspended Alberto El Patron, effective immediately, until the investigation is resolved following a recent incident in Orlando, Florida.”

Prior to suspending him, GFW had noted that they were taking the incident seriously and that they would fully investigate it and cooperate with law enforcement.

El Patron was detained at the Orlando International Airport on Sunday following what one witness referred to as “an altercation” between him and Paige. TMZ later released audio of the incident, confirming that it was between El Patron and Paige after Paige had tweeted that they were the ones to get police involved after a fan threw a drink into El Patron’s face.

In posts on Facebook, Paige’s brothers both alleged that El Patron has physically abused their sister.

El Patron defeated Bobby Lashley at Slammiversary to become GFW’s Unified Champion. He was one of the focal points of the post-PPV television tapings, and Jeff Jarrett clarified on a media conference call that he won’t be edited out of upcoming shows.

WWE SmackDown video highlights: AJ Styles teams with John Cena

On a show that continued setting things up for Battleground, AJ Styles teamed up with John Cena against Kevin Owens & Rusev in the main event of last night’s SmackDown.

Styles opened the episode as the new United States Champion after winning the title at Madison Square Garden. He tried to bring back the US title open challenge (with Cena accepting) until Owens and Rusev came out to ruin things, setting up their tag match

Also on the show, Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Baron Corbin never got underway as Nakamura started a brawl, Jinder Mahal took on Tye Dillinger, and more storylines were furthered for Battleground.

Whether Naomi will be defending her title at the show hasn’t been announced yet. Carmella still doesn’t have a match for the PPV either.

Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Baron Corbin is also set for Battleground, which will be Nakamura’s third PPV since moving up to the main roster. Their feud was advertised to lead to a match on SmackDown this week, but Nakamura started a brawl with Corbin before it could get underway.

WWE Raw video highlights: Fallout from Great Balls of Fire

WWE built up two major storylines for next week’s episode on the post-Great Balls of Fire episode of Raw.

It will be Roman Reigns vs. Samoa Joe in a number one contender’s match next week, with the winner challenging Brock Lesnar for the Universal Championship at SummerSlam. Where Braun Strowman fits into that remains to be seen given that there was no update on his condition on Monday night.

After Kurt Angle said that he plans to “go public” with information regarding the mysterious text messages that he and Corey Graves have been receiving, the show ended with a cliffhanger as Angle told someone on the phone to come to Raw next week and that he loves them.

Before that, Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose helped each other out despite tension still existing between them, The Miz hosted his own awards show, and Sasha Banks & Bayley again faced off with Alexa Bliss & Nia Jax.

Number one contender’s match set for Raw next week

There will be a match to determine Brock Lesnar’s SummerSlam opponent on next week’s episode of Raw.

It was announced tonight that Roman Reigns would face Samoa Joe in a number one contender’s match next Monday, with the winner getting a Universal Championship shot against Lesnar at SummerSlam. That pay-per-view will take place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York on August 20th.

Reigns first interrupted Lesnar on Raw and reiterated that he wanted a title shot. Paul Heyman seemed ready to accept the challenge, but Lesnar spoke up and said that Reigns didn’t deserve it. Joe then came out and told Lesnar that he didn’t beat him at Great Balls of Fire, he escaped him. Heyman tried to deny him a rematch, but Joe and Lesnar went face-to-face as Kurt Angle announced Reigns vs. Joe for next week.

Where Braun Strowman fits into all of this should become clear relatively quickly given that he beat Reigns at Great Balls of Fire. The storyline on Raw was that Angle didn’t have an update on Strowman’s condition.

The angle with the mysterious text messages that Angle and Corey Graves have been receiving will be advanced next week as well, with Angle saying that he’s going to “go public” with some information. He closed tonight’s Raw by telling someone on the phone to come to next week’s show and that he loves them.

Alberto El Patron under investigation for domestic battery

Additional notes added by Dave Meltzer

GFW Champion Alberto El Patron is being investigated for an alleged domestic violence incident at the Orlando International Airport yesterday.

Orlando police made a statement confirming that El Patron was detained at the airport: “There was an incident at the Orlando International Airport at about 3 p.m. Sunday involving Jose Rodriguez (DOB 5/25/1977). The reported incident was a domestic violence battery, and it is still under investigation. No arrests have been made as of this time, but the case remains open. That is all the information we have for release at this time.”

In a report from TMZ Sports, it was noted that witnesses confirmed that El Patron was arguing with a woman in an airport terminal until cops were called when things escalated, with one witness saying that there was “an altercation.”

Police wouldn’t release the name of the alleged victim, but witnesses told TMZ that El Patron’s fiancee Paige was at the airport with him. He and Paige had broken up a few weeks ago, but were back together days later.

El Patron had been in Orlando all week for the GFW/Impact television tapings, but he missed a booking for Delgado Promotions in El Paso, Texas yesterday. Airline problems were the reason given by the promotion for him missing that show.

PWInsider first reported the incident earlier today.

UPDATE: TMZ posted audio of some of the incident, confirming that it was between El Patron and Paige.

WON BACK ISSUE: June 12, 2000 Wrestling Observer Newsletter: Paul Heyman meets with ECW talent, PRIDE 9 results, more

Paul Heyman, who hadn’t appeared at an ECW event since the Hardcore Heaven PPV, surprisingly, after missing the TV taping on 6/2 in New Orleans, flew to Pensacola, FL for the house show for a lengthy ECW team meeting. The one hour long meeting was largely a pep talk, since most of the wrestlers hadn’t even spoken to Heyman in a month, and with smaller crowds, slightly declining ratings and late checks, morale had hit a new low.

Heyman went through a story about where he saw the wrestling business in the U.S. headed. The theory he had was that WWF and USA Network would settle their lawsuit before going to trial because both have so much dirt on the other that would come out in court that both sides stock prices would drop and suffer public embarrassment.

SATURDAY NEWS UPDATE

WWE

  • In a post on Instagram, Alberto El Patron challenged Triple H and people who were involved in the rap battle last Tuesday to a fight when SmackDown comes to San Antonio, Texas this week. El Patron wrote: “Tuesday next week a bunch of p*ssies will be there in San Antonio. The man with the big nose and no balls but also the p*ssies from the rap battle will be too.. also with no balls. Like their boss. All yes men. I’ll be in my restaurant. Starting at 10 pm.. I’ll be waiting for you there.” He went on to say that he’ll buy them a drink when he “beats the sh*t” out of them. His issues with The Usos and/or New Day presumably are because of the veiled mention of Paige and Xavier Woods from the rap battle.

UFC/MMA

  • Valentina Shevchenko released a statement about her fight with Amanda Nunes being canceled at the last minute: “Today I am 100% ready for this fight. During the last 3 months of training I did everything to be in my best shape for this fight. Nunes couldn’t cut weight correctly and was hospitalized. She wanted to cut weight and recover rapidly to have the advantage. The end result, everything went wrong. Even though she was medically cleared to fight, she backed out. This fight was originally offered to take place in April and she would not accept then. I did my part and am very upset that I can’t fight for the title today on this great event. I am even more upset for all my dear fans who support me every time throughout the world and to those who traveled to see me fight here in Las Vegas live. I feel frustrated about what happened but I won’t relax, will not put down energy in my preparation, and will wait until the UFC gives us another date for the fight.”
  • Dana White also claimed that Nunes was cleared to fight but said that she didn’t feel good. Nevada Athletic Commission executive director Bob Bennett said that there were issues that went “beyond” weakness from cutting weight that led to Nunes’ withdrawal.
  • Dana White revealed that Joanna Jedrzejczyk was “begging” to replace Nunes on short notice, but it wasn’t possible with the commission. Shevchenko said that she wanted to take the fight.
  • Rob Font vs. Douglas Silva de Andrade is replacing Nunes vs. Shevchenko on the pay-per-view card.
  • The UFC uploaded the fourth and fifth episodes of Embedded prior to tonight’s PPV.
  • Justin Gaethje wants whatever gets him closer to an interim lightweight title fight and an eventual shot against Conor McGregor.

AJ Styles wins WWE US title at Madison Square Garden house show

In a rarity for WWE, one of the company’s titles changed hands at a house show tonight.

AJ Styles defeated Kevin Owens to become the new United States Champion at Madison Square Garden. WWE acknowledged the title change with posts on Twitter and an article on their website.

WWE’s house shows at Madison Square Garden are among the biggest non-televised events that they put on all year. Tonight’s show mostly consisted of matches from the Raw roster, but Owens vs. Styles and Shinsuke Nakamura making his MSG debut against Dolph Ziggler took place as well.

Styles won a battle royal in the main event of the Fourth of July edition of SmackDown to earn a title shot against Owens at Battleground. We’ll see if Styles makes it to next week’s SmackDown as champion and how WWE will explain the switch if he does.

The last major house show title changes that WWE did were both in NXT. Nakamura regained the NXT Championship in a match against Samoa Joe in Osaka, Japan last December. Joe also defeated Finn Balor to win the NXT title for the first time at a live event in Lowell, Massachusetts in April of last year.

Austin Aries released by WWE

News of one of the more surprising WWE releases in some time came today, with WWE announcing in the late afternoon that Austin Aries is no longer with the company.

WWE posted a statement on their website: “WWE has come to terms on the release of WWE Superstar Austin Aries. WWE wishes Aries the best in all of his future endeavors.”

Not long before the news of his release was announced, Aries tweeted: “It’s a beautiful day.” He followed up by posting three emojis (a banana, a smiling face with sunglasses, and a thumbs up) when the news came out. We can confirm that he asked to be released.

Aries had been scheduled to challenge for Neville’s Cruiserweight Championship at tonight’s house show at Madison Square Garden until recently. He was replaced by Cedric Alexander.

After his lengthy feud over the title with Neville ended, Aries’ last appearance on WWE TV came on the June 20th episode of 205 Live. He continued his partnership with Jack Gallagher, which was formed the week before when Aries claimed that he wasn’t medically cleared to compete due to neck and leg issues.

There was a situation before that where Aries seemed to indicate on an episode of Busted Open Radio that he was taking time off due to injuries, but he later denied that was the case when asked about it in an interview with USA Today.

Two more wrestlers confirmed for WWE Mae Young Classic

With the addition of two names today, half of the field for the Mae Young Classic is officially set.

WWE announced that Sage Beckett and Rhea Ripley would be taking part in the tournament. Beckett was most recently known as Andrea on the indies before signing with WWE, with her also having made a couple of appearances for TNA as Rosie Lottalove in 2010.

Beckett retired from pro wrestling due to medical problems in 2012, but she returned 130 pounds lighter two years later. She went by Mary Kate in a match against Emma on an episode of NXT in 2015 and was using that name (which is her real first name) on the NXT house show circuit after being signed.

Ripley is another wrestler who recently signed with WWE and was given a name change. Despite only being 20 years old now, she began wrestling in her home country of Australia in 2013. She used her real name (Demi Bennett) before coming to WWE.

The full list of participants for the Mae Young Classic figures to be announced before it begins taping at Full Sail University on July 13th and 14th. Here are the wrestlers who have been confirmed for it so far: Toni Storm, Princesa Sugehit, Lacey Evans, Sarah Logan, Tessa Blanchard, Abbey Laith, Taynara Conti, Kavita Devi, Jazzy Gabert, Bianca Belair, Vanessa Borne, Dakota Kai, Kairi Sane, Piper Niven, Beckett, and Ripley.
