Figure Four Weekly: Figure Four Weekly 8/22/2016: Gawker destroyed by Hulk Hogan – While there had been hints that it could happen, it still came as a shock last week that, thanks to the series of events stemming from Hulk Hogan’s lawsuit against Gawker Media, the flagship Gawker blog would be shutting down operations a few days later. It all stemmed from the bankruptcy auction for Gawker Media’s assets, where the bidders ended up being Ziff Davis and Unimodia, the subsidiary of Univision that oversees Fusion and its sister sites like The Onion, AV Club, and The Root… Subscribers click here to continue reading.

Wrestling Observer Newsletter: August 29, 2016 Wrestling Observer Newsletter: UFC sale final, Summerslam results and fallout, more – Lorenzo Fertitta, the CEO and person who historically should be remembered as perhaps the most important figure in making MMA into a worldwide sport left the office for the final time on 8/17.

The UFC staff was all told to come for a meeting, and as it turned out, the guest of honor was busy at first and they had to regroup and come back later. Fertitta, 48, took a $2 million investment in 2001 to a $4 billion sale 15 years later. Aside from making a killing in business, he saved a sport that was on its deathbed in the U.S. The sale was officially completed with the money changing hands this past week, a similar letter to the one above was sent to all company employees, and the new era of UFC began with UFC 202… Subscribers click here to continue reading.

SUNDAY NEWS UPDATE

Harry Fujiwara, better known as Mr. Fuji and the Great Fuji passed away this morning at the age of 82Fujiwara had a long run with WWF as a manager, playing a stereotypical Japanese role after many runs in the promotion as part of heel Japanese tag teams with either Professor Toru Tanaka and later Masa Saito. He was a solid headliner who worked virtually everywhere at one time or another and held both the U.S. and Canadian heavyweight titles. He had been living in Tennessee since his retirement from WWE in the mid-90s. Fujiwara began his career with 50th State Wrestling in Hawaii in 1962, and first came to the mainland in 1964 in California. He was best known for his role as a manager of Don Muraco, Demolition, Powers of Pain, Yokozuna, and Killer Khan, as well as endless matches on WWWF major arena midcards and small town main events with the likes of Chief Jay Strongbow and Tony Garea.

Matt Striker & Hugo Savinovich are doing the English language announcing for the TripleMania iPPV tonight, which says they weren’t permanently scarred by the atrocity that was the show last year. This year’s show actually looks quite good, and I know a lot of the Americans who have never done TripleMania are pretty excited as it’ll be either the largest or one of the largest crowds several of them have ever worked in front of.

Today is the 14th anniversary of a monumental MMA event, the Pride show at Tokyo National Stadium that drew 71,000 fans, still the all-time attendance record for MMA, headlined by Kazushi Sakuraba vs. Mirko Cro Cop, and also featuring Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Bob Sapp and Royce Gracie vs. Hidehiko Yoshida.

Two of the biggest pro wrestling events ever in Los Angeles, and as far as people wanting to buy tickets, the biggest of the last 50 years, had anniversaries over the weekend.

  • On August 27, 1971, the Fred Blassie vs. John Tolos headlined show at the Los Angeles Coliseum drew 25,781 fans and set the all-time record live gate for U.S. pro wrestling as the culmination of one of the greatest angles in wrestling history, started when Tolos blinded Blassie with Monsel’s Powder on KCOP television a few months earlier. Bill Watts essentially copied that idea nine years later with Junkyard Dog vs. Michael Hayes and set the all-time indoor gate record at the Superdome.
  • On August 28, 1993, Konnan, suspended from wrestling in Mexico after losing a retirement match to Cien Caras due to the interference of Jake Roberts, headlined a three-way called La Revancha with Konnan vs. Caras vs. Roberts at the Los Angeles Sports Arena which drew the all-time record crowd for the building of 17,500 with 8,000 turned away at the door in what is still the most heated pro wrestling event I’ve ever been to live, and actually by a wide margin.  A music video from the show, the guy in the purple outfit who is really small is an 18-year-old Rey Misterio Jr.  Lots of an amazing Eddy Guerrero, the father of Volador Jr., (Volador), Santo, Octagon, Love Machine and the other stars of that era.

Thanks for all the nice comments on this week’s Observer. Our weekend Wrestling Observer Radio show is up with coverage of last night’s UFC show, more on Randy Orton having a job for life, C.M. Punk’s quest to become a UFC fighter and NXT.

WWE

  • The Headbangers are scheduled as the eighth team in the Smackdown tag team tournament and will most likely face Rhino & Heath Slater, although they could also face The Vaudevillains or Hype Bros.
  • For whatever this is worth, the cable guide for tomorrow on some places listed Seth Rollins vs. Kevin Owens for the Universal title as the main event. Probably a miscommunication regarding the four-way match which also includes Big Cass and Roman Reigns for the title that headlines tomorrow’s show.
  • There’s a WrestleMania reference in this presidential election story here. (thanks to Chris Cruise)

UFC

  • Carlos Condit certainly talked like a man who had one foot out the door at the post-show press conference after last night’s UFC show in Vancouver where he lost to Demian Maia in 1:52.
  • Last night’s UFC on FOX did 2.22 million viewers based on the fast nationals. The number is normal range for a UFC summer show, but it’s a very misleading number.  It won’t the show the usual growth most likely because for UFC on FOX, the biggest audience is always drawn after 10 p.m., and the show ended at 10 p.m.  The short main event is never good for ratings.  Plus, several markets pre-empted the UFC for NFL preseason football, so the 2.22 million number is an NFL number in a few markets which inflates the number.  Even though it’s preseason, NFL competition is going to hurt a UFC TV event, probably significantly.  The show was second in the 18-49 demo but of the four networks, based on the overnights, FOX finished last with total viewers.

In picks from last night:

  • 4-1:  Mike Sempervive, Josh Nation, Ryan Frederick, Frontrow Brian
  • 3-2:  Dave Meltzer, John Pollock, Mike Sawyer, David Bixenspan
  • 2-3:  Steve Juon, Paul Fontaine

MISCELLANEOUS

  • Paul Orndorff was announced for the 2/18 Legends of Wrestling event at the Holy Cross Gym in Winnipeg.
  • Insane Championship Wrestling announced that The Dudley Boyz (billed as Team 3D) will appear at their November 20th show in Glasgow, Scotland. It’s the first announced appearance for the team after leaving WWE.
  • This is the Dragon Lee vs. Flamita match that aired last night on TV Azteca in Mexico.
  • Jack Gallagher vs. Evil Uno takes place on the 9/16 Smash vs. Progress show in Oshawa, ONT, which also includes Mark Haskins vs. Maybach Beta.
  • Ephesto & Mephisto & Luciferno defend the Mexica national trios titles aginast Angel de Oro & Atlantis & Stuka Jr. tonight at Arena Mexico.
  • Promociones EMW on 9/2 at the Auditorio in Tijuana has The Psycho Circus vs. Damian 666 & Nicho & Pagano, so either Pagano is bald or Psycho Clown will be there without his mask. Pretty good bet which one of those will be the case.

Raw ratings up after the Olympics

Raw had its expected big increase coming the day after SummerSlam and with no major sports competition.

Still, the number can’t be celebrated too much, as the 3.30 million viewers was lower than the 3.33 million viewers the day after Battleground and 3.47 million viewers the day after Money in the Bank. Raw was fourth for the night on cable, trailing Rizzoli & Isles (4.75 million viewers), Major Crimes (3.94 million viewers) and The O’Reilly Factor (3.48 million viewers).

The previous two Raws, going against the Olympics, did 2.90 and 2.91 million viewers, the two lowest for non-holiday shows in the last 19 years.

The show started with the high point being the first hour, meaning curiosity coming off SummerSlam, as opposed to the usual second hour high point. The third hour was the usual drop, with the third hour drop particularly strong with women 35-49 years old.

The three hours were:

8 p.m. 3.46 million viewers
9 p.m. 3.37 million viewers
10 p.m. 3.11 million viewers

WWE bids farewell to Dudleys as contract not renewed

Last night’s Raw was the final appearance of Bubba (Mark LoMonaco) & D-Von (Devon Hughes) Dudley with WWE.

The team had signed a one-year contract, but had verbally agreed to a new contract several weeks ago. They had been working on an angle to split the two up for weeks on television but decisions were changed and the decision was made to not renew the contract and to drop the angle.

So instead they were given a farewell last night in Brooklyn where they got to turn babyface, set up signature spots with the Shining Stars, and then be used to get heel heat for Karl Anderson & Luke Gallows, the Raw brand’s top heel tag team.

The WWE was very gracious with them on television on the way out, with the announcers pushing that they may have been the greatest tag team in pro wrestling history.

Video of the Dudleys bidding farewell on Raw can be seen in last night’s video highlights.

Daily Update: WWE injuries, Balor, Banks, Orton, SummerSlam fallout, UFC to MSG

Injuries Play Havoc at WWE’s SummerSlam

Finn Balor’s injury to his right arm may have been serious as the WWE stated he possibly suffered a torn labrum, in his right shoulder taking the power bomb into the barricade. That injury often requires surgery which would put him out of action for around six months. He did appear on Good Morning America without his arm in a sling or a brace. He was examined today and the first word is that it wasn’t good news. Because Balor is Universal champion, if the injury is significant enough for him to miss a few weeks, it’ll have to be addressed on television.

The finish of the main event last night was exactly as planned. They were not looking for so much blood, but the idea was definitely to do a hardway on Orton and stop the match due to the brutality. Orton needed 10 staples to close the cut. He is fine, or as fine as someone would be who just got elbows hard enough in the forehead to bust him open like that.

Sasha Banks has a back injury and will be off for at least the short term. The title change was due to the injury. The early injury news today wasn’t bad, as compared to Balor, as far as potential time off.

We’re looking for live reports from Brooklyn tonight with dark matches, Superstars matches and anything else that wouldn’t be evident for the live show. Brock Lesnar wasn’t scheduled to appear on tonight’s show.

Smackdown will be Tuesday night from the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, CT.

THE ROUND-UP

Figure Four Weekly: August 17, 2016; Buff Bagwell sues WWE for unpaid Network royalties – When Rene Dupree’s lawsuit against WWE over WWE Network royalties was quickly dropped a few months ago, the question coming out of it was not if there would be another such lawsuit, but when and with whom as the next plaintiff would be. Wrestling Observer Newsletter: August 22, 2016; WWE Summerslam/UFC 202/NXT Takeover previews, G1 Climax review, tons more – The biggest weekend of the summer, featuring one of UFC’s biggest fights in history, WWE’s third biggest show of the year, what theoretically is NXT’s biggest show of the year (although in reality it is its second biggest), as well as the sixth Super J Cup in history, runs from 8/19 to 8/21.

The big event is UFC 202 on 8/20 at the T Mobile Arena, featuring a rematch of the biggest money fight in company history–Conor McGregor vs. Nate Diaz. Their first fight, held on 3/5 in Las Vegas, did 1.6 million buys on PPV, the largest non-boxing PPV event in history. With Diaz winning, the feeling is a rematch would only be bigger. But for a number of reasons, there didn’t appear to be the excitement level expected… Subscribers click here to continue reading.

MONDAY NEWS UPDATE

There was a confrontation last night after the Brock Lesnar vs. Randy Orton match involving Lesnar and Chris Jericho. There was shoving involved and Vince McMahon and Paul Levesque had to break it up twice. We’ll have an article on the story up on the site shortly.

There will be a farewell to the Dudleys angle tonight on Raw. Given the storyline, I presume it ends up with Bubba turning on Devon but they are playing it up now like it’s the farewell to the promotion.

There were a lot of major WWE references coming out of the show big on Google yesterday. SummerSlam had 1 million searches, which is as big as any show I can recall other than WrestleManias. Finn Balor had 200,000; Kyle Snyder had 50,000; Sasha Banks had 50,000, Kevin Ferguson Jr. (Kimbo Slice’s son who suffered a knee injury) and Nikki Bella had 20,000. Claressa Shields also had 20,000.

The Bellator debut of Baby Slice, or Kevin Ferguson Jr., the son of Kimbo Slice, scheduled for Friday’s Bellator show at the Honda Center in Anaheim, has been postponed due to an MCL injury according to Ariel Helwani at MMA Fighting. The injury will not require surgery.

Bryan and I will be back tonight talking Raw and all the latest news. We’ve got audio shows up covering every big show of the weekend.  We will almost assuredly have time for questions tonight so you can send them to [email protected].

  • The New York State Athletic Commission shut down an inter gender match at a show in Brooklyn promoted by Tier 1 Wrestling and Warriors of Wrestling. The match involved Jessie Brooks and Marc Hauss. Brooks regularly works matches against men in New York. But on Friday, as soon as the match started, the New York State Athletic Commission representative shut the match down claiming that men and women cannot compete in a wrestling match against each other in New York. Fans thought it was all part of the show but it wasn’t. There is a law on the books as it relates to combat sports that men and women can’t box against each other but there is no such law as it relates to pro wrestling. Apparently the New York State Athletic Commission has since said the rule was misinterpreted and it was a law regarding boxing. So they got that cleared up as the main event between Jeff Cobb and Daruis Carter was in the ring. The two were told to go longer than they had planned in order to give Brooks and Hauss more time to redo their match, which was put on last. Brooks won and all the wrestlers came out and banged on the mat when it was over. The promotion claimed the match was booked weeks in advance and the commission was told about it and they had time to review or make a ruling against the match.

Brock Lesnar, Chris Jericho in heated altercation at SummerSlam

The ending of the Randy Orton vs. Brock Lesnar SummerSlam match, which went pretty much as planned, led to a verbal and somewhat physical confrontation between Lesnar and Chris Jericho last night.

According to multiple sources, Jericho came to the gorilla position just as the match ended, apparently to see if Orton was okay and to find out what exactly happened. He asked Michael Hayes what the finish was or if that was the finish. Hayes wouldn’t answer him at which point Jericho said, “That’s bullsh*t.”

Jericho said that just as Lesnar came back from the ring. Lesnar thought he was talking about his match, and called Jericho a pussy according to one version, or “shut up” according to another, and to mind his own business. The two got face-to-face and started exchanging words, with one version saying they were shouting at each other the whole time.

Lesnar pushed Jericho with his fingers, and Jericho did what was described as the “Rousey-Tate” foreheed press. One version also had Jericho shoving Lesnar to the wall at one point.

They got tangled up against the wall and Lesnar told Jericho to punch him or kiss him. Paul “HHH” Levesque jumped in quickly and broke it up. It was heated enough that they went back at it at which time Vince McMahon broke it up. Jericho started yelling about Lesnar and McMahon told Jericho that it was all a work and to be professional.

Levesque reportedly told McMahon that Lesnar started it, and Jericho was just standing up for himself but there were more words exchanged.

Jericho saw Orton and got mad, which everyone noted was because he was concerned with Orton’s health and safety. Orton reportedly assured him that he knew the way everything was coming.

Finn Balor suffers injury at WWE SummerSlam

This story was updated late Monday afternoon.

Finn Balor’s crowning moment of winning the Universal title over Seth Rollins Sunday at WWE SummerSlam may be for naught as he was injured, believed to be suffered after he was power bombed into the barricade by Rollins.

The severity of the injury is unknown at this point as he’s scheduled for an evaluation Monday at television, but his arm was in a sling post-show and there was fear he would need surgery.

ESPN’s Arash Markazi tweeted Monday afternoon that an MRI showed a possible labrum tear, but the extent of the injury won’t be known until he has a surgical consultation this week. He continued that surgery is needed, Balor could be out of action for 8-12 weeks.

If that is the case, it will require some major overhauls in creative plans as he was scheduled to headline all the Raw brand shows as the Universal Champion.

Of note, Balor appeared Monday morning with new WWE Women’s Champion Charlotte on Good Morning America and was not wearing any type of sling.

WWE SummerSlam live results: Brock Lesnar vs. Randy Orton

Preview by Joseph Currier

WWE’s biggest event of the summer is scheduled for August 21st, when SummerSlam will take place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY.

We’re looking for your thoughts on this show, as well as the ROH, NXT, UFC and New Japan Super J Cup shows this weekend, with a thumbs up, thumbs down or thumbs in the middle along with a best and worst match to [email protected].

Following the WWE Draft, much of the build for the show has been centered on the Brock Lesnar vs. Randy Orton interpromotional match. SmackDown’s Orton showed up uninvited to Raw to deliver an RKO to Lesnar, and Raw’s Lesnar subsequently made an appearance on SmackDown to get his revenge.

The Beast and the Viper will settle their differences inside of the ring at SummerSlam.

The show will also feature the crowning of the first WWE Universal Champion, as Finn Balor and Seth Rollins will face off for the newly-created title. Balor earned his title shot by winning a four-way match and defeating Roman Reigns on the first post-draft edition of Raw. Rollins was given a free pass to the title opportunity by Stephanie McMahon.

Dean Ambrose will also defend his WWE Championship against Dolph Ziggler after Ziggler earned the shot at SmackDown’s top title. And AJ Styles will battle John Cena in a continuation of their month’s long feud. Styles defeated Cena with the help of The Club at Money in the Bank, but Cena pinned Styles in a six-man tag match at Battleground.

After Sasha Banks defeated Charlotte on Raw to become the new WWE Women’s Champion, Charlotte will look to get her title back in a match with the Boss.

**********

THE HYPE BROS & AMERICAN ALPHA & USOS def. THE VAUDEVILLANS & TYLER BREEZE & FANDANGO & THE ASCENSION

The big story is that the Usos look to be going heel to feud with American Alpha, which makes sense. The finish saw American Alpha do the Grand Amplitude on Simon Gotch, but Jey Uso tagged in Gable. Gable didn’t know and Jey pinned Gotch. Gable gave Jey a dirty look and in the celebration, Hype Bros & Alpha were holding each other’s hands while the Usos were to the side. Hype Bros also seemed annoyed with the Usos.

This was a long match that the crowd didn’t react much to, but there was solid work with a good finish. The crowd booed the Usos when they came out so they are just reacting to the crowd. Obviously, Jordan & Gable were the most over.

NEVILLE & SAMI ZAYN def. THE DUDLEYS

They were pushing the Dudleys having issues before the match. Nothing much to this, but they were pushing that Neville & Zayn were a pretty good team so they may be put together regularly. Bubba went for a clothesline on Neville but he moved, so Bubba clotheslined Devon. Zayn hit the Helluva kick on Bubba and Neville pinned him with the Red Arrow.

Nothing much to this match and nothing like you’d expect for Neville & Zayn, but it wasn’t like they were in a position to do much.

BEST OF SEVEN (Match 1): CESARO VS. SHEAMUS

Sheamus won the match after he hit a thumb to the eye when he was in the sharpshooter. He then hit the Brogue kick for the pin.  Cesaro did a stand on the post, jumping onto the top rope for a springboard crossbody as the unique move. Good match and everything was solid, but the crowd was quiet most of the way until the finish that made the match just seem okay.

CHRIS JERICHO & KEVIN OWENS def. ENZO AMORE & BIG CASS

The match was about what you’d think it was: Enzo selling most of the way and Cass with the hot tag. Owens threw Cass into the post and did the cannonball into the barricade on them. In the ring, Owens did a pop up powerbomb on Enzo into a codebreaker by Jericho with Jericho pinning Enzo. Enzo was off on a few spots. Crowd really liked Owens when he was mocking Enzo. Enzo & Cass got a great reaction for their pre-match promo where they talked about New York, Sinatra, and lyrics from “Empire State of Mind”.

Shane McMahon, Daniel Bryan & Mick Foley came out together. Foley asked how Brock is going to win and how Smackdown will have good matches. Jon Stewart came in, ran down Stephanie and then Stephanie showed up. Stewart then started backing down and was all scared of Stephanie. The New Day then showed up and hugged Stewart. Stephanie said she was misunderstood and Shane kind of made fun of them.

CHARLOTTE def. SASHA BANKS TO WIN THE WWE WOMEN’S TITLE

Charlotte won the title back when she was caught in the Bank Statement, but Charlotte used her weight advantage to fall on top of Banks for the pin. Both worked really hard, but it appeared Banks may have been hurt early in the match when she was dropped by Charlotte in a bad landing. Banks seemed out of it for a short period and it was klunky.

The match got better and the crowd was more into this than anythig so far. But, this was nothing close to their Raw match. The highlight was Banks doing double knees off the middle rope to the floor, and Charlotte doing a middle rope splash mountain that Banks turned into a huracanrana.

Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson were backstage with A.J. Styles in their doctor’s outfits. Styles said they’re running Raw and he’s going to beat up John Cena. Finn Balor showed up, and they acknoweldged he was part of their group before. They tried to Too Sweet him and he walked out. They need to explain that for the fans who don’t know the background.

I-C CHAMPION THE MIZ def. APOLLO CREWS TO RETAIN

This felt rushed. They were going back and forth, but the ending came when Crews missed a charge as his head hit the post and Miz pinned him after a skull crushing finale. Crews did good athletic stuff but it never got heated. Maryse’s outfit was probably the best thing in the match.

AJ STYLES def. JOHN CENA

This was an incredible match. Both were trading near falls very early giving the impression it would be a short match but they ended up going 23 minutes. They did everthiung in their arsenal and the match ended up with super crowd reactions. Styles had a busted mouth. This blew away everything up to this point on the show.

All kinds of near falls, climaxing when Cena used an Attitude Adjustment off the middle rope, but Styles kicked out. Cena sat in the corner and acted shocked that Styles had kicked out of move after move…although Cena kicked out of the Styles clash and the forearm. Cena went for the Styles clash again but Styles turned it into the Styles Clash a second time, hitting the phenomenal forearm a second time for the pin.

Cena took off his armband and walked off after leaving. This felt like a guy taking time off as he saluted the fans as he left the ring.  He’s leaving to do the TV show most likely.

Jon Stewart came out, dressed up for the gig. He put over the Cena vs. Styles match and said it was magic. Referencing last year’s SummerSlam, he said he’s glad some idiot didn’t interfere by hitting someone with a chair. Nobody seemed to care. He had some real bad material. He said he was asked by The New Day to come out and talked about Big E being injured. He had a New Day T-shirt on and put on a unicorn horn. He said he’s joining The New Day and did the Big E entrance since Big E “isn’t here.”

LUKE GALLOWS & KARL ANDERSON DEF. WWE TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS THE NEW DAY (KOFI KINGSTON & XAVIER WOODS) BY DQ

As far as the match went, it was more a showcase for the finish. They did the magic killer on Woods when Stewart jumped in to save the title. Gallows & Anderson teased crotching Stewart on the post for a long time. He went to tuck in his shirt first. Right before he was going to do it, Big E ran in and suplexed Gallows overhead on the floor for the DQ.  He also drove Gallows into the barricade and then the New Day and Stewart celebrated.

WWE CHAMPION DEAN AMBROSE DEF. DOLPH ZIGGLER

Ambrose won the match clean when Ziggler was trying for an X-factor and Ambrose blocked it, hitting the Dirty Deeds for the pin. The match was okay, but definitely not anywhere close to what you’d expect. The crowd was dead which also didn’t help. You could really see they’ve beaten Ziggler down and nobody bought that he could win. Even when he did his superkick and his Zig Zag, there was only a light — at best — reaction as far as the kick out.

NATALYA & ALEXA BLISS & NIKKI BELLA def. NAOMI & CARMELLA & BECKY LYNCH

They did the Eva Marie ring entrance even though she’s not there. They said she’s suffering from exhaustion and illnesses and is taking a vacation in Europe. Match was okay, but there wasn’t much heat. Nikki was pushed as the star. Natlaya and Bliss knocked Lynch out of the ring and threw Naomi into the post. Carmella dropkicked Natalya and Bliss out of the ring and turned around into the forearm by Nikki, who then used the TKO — her new finisher.

Maria Menounos interviewed Rusev & Lana. She said a true husband will destroy any man who insults her husband. He said he would show that Reigns will be the joke.

FINN BALOR def. SETH ROLLINS TO WIN THE WWE UNIVERSAL TITLE

They claimed Balor was the first guy to ever win a world title in his first PPV match.  Well, Big Show immediately comes to mind.  Balor won with a couple of running dropicks and the Coup De Grace for the clean pin. Balor kicked out of the pedigree near the finish. Tons of near falls. This was real good, and it didn’t have a lot of heat early, but by the end, the crowd was with them and Rollins had a hell of a performance.

Fans were chanting “Delete, delete” and “This belt sucks” during the match, echoing online sentiment for the look of the Universal title.

They showed the Dolph Ziggler/Miz KFC commercial with Miz in a chicken outfit and Ziggler in a Col. Sanders mask and wig.

US CHAMPION RUSEV VS. ROMAN REIGNS WENT TO A NO-CONTEST

Rusev jumped him before the match, threw Reigns’ shoulder first into the steps and worked it over. They brawled in the timekeeper’s area.  eigns came back and “injured Rusev’s ribs”. He was selling big.  Reigns wouldn’t stop attacking until they got him away and then they announced no match. Reigns came back and gave him a running spear on the ramp, so definitely no match. There was a “We Want Slater” chant.

BROCK LESNAR def. RANDY ORTON by TKO

This was really unique at the finish. Lesnar was ground and pounding him and looked like he knocked Orton out with an elbow as Orton was bleeding all over the place. The idea was clearly to have Orton busted open like with John Cena in Lesnar’s return match, but Orton looked like he was knocked out.  The doctors came in, but Lesnar kept going back to attack Orton.

Some of this was clearly planned but I’m not sure if this was the planned finish. Orton was a bloody mess.

Lesnar continued to beat on him after the match with worked punches. Shane McMahon jumped in the ring and got F5’d. Paul Heyman was freaking out. It appeared the idea was to be graphic and violent and look like a shoot, but it didn’t look like it was the planned finish of the match, although the Shane spot was clearly planned.

We’ll discuss this more on tonight’s Wrestling Observer Radio.

Kyle Snyder wins Olympic gold in wrestling

Kyle Snyder became the youngest American gold medalist in history on Sunday when he scored a close 2-1 win over Khetag Goziumov of Azerbaijan in the gold medal match in Rio de Janeiro.

Snyder captured the gold at 97 kilograms, or 213 pounds.

Snyder, who is 20, followed on the footsteps of being America’s youngest world champion in history, last year, at the age of 19. He followed up by winning the NCAA heavyweight championship, moving up a weight division to face Nick Gwiazdowski in one of the most thrilling heavyweight title matches in NCAA history. The previous youngest gold medalist was current UFC fighter Henry Cejudo, who took gold in 2008 at 121 pounds.

The match was the two powerhouses pushing for position. The only actual offensive point scored was by Snyder, when he pushed Goziumov out of bounds for a point in the first period. Each were put on the shot clock and unable to convert, which accounted for each man’s other point.

In the waning seconds, Goziumov desperately went for a push out which would tie the score, but Snyder did a great job of defending.

Snyder is expected to return to wrestle next season for Ohio State and go for a second gold medal in 2020.

The GHC Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championship will be on the line as well, with Atsushi Kotoge and Daisuke Harada defending against ACH and Taiji Ishimori. And the show will feature CMLL stars as Volador Jr., Titan, and Caristico take on Ultimo Guerrero, Gran Guerrero, and Euforia in a six-man tag.

  • Super J-Cup tournament finals match
  • IWGP Junior Tag Team Champions The Young Bucks (Matt & Nick Jackson) vs. The Motor City Machine Guns (Alex Shelley & Chris Sabin) for the titles
  • GHC Junior Tag Team Champions Atsushi Kotoge & Daisuke Harada vs. ACH & Taiji Ishimori

  • Super J-Cup tournament semifinals match
  • Volador Jr., Titan, & Caristico vs. Ultimo Guerrero, Gran Guerrero, & Euforia
  • Matt Sydal vs. Will Ospreay in a second round tournament match
  • Ryusuke Taguchi vs. Yoshinobu Kanemaru in a second round tournament match
  • KUSHIDA vs. Kenoh in a second round tournament match
  • Jushin Thunder Liger vs. Taichi in a second round tournament match
  • David Finlay, Eita, & Yuma Aoyagi vs. BUSHI, Kaji Tomato, & Gurukun Mask

EITA & DAVID FINLAY & YUMA AOYAGI VS. BUSHI & KAJI TOMATO & GURUKUN MASK

Okay match. Eita, Gurukun Mask and Aoyagi did some cool dives at the end. Bushi pinned Finlay coming off the top rope with a codebeaker. After the match, Bushi turned on his teammates, blowing mist in Tomato’s eyes after Tomato offered him a tomato, and then Bushi started tearing up Gurukun’s mask.

JUSHIN LIGER VS. TAICHI IN THE QUARTERFINALS

Nothing to this match. Desperado kept interfering.  It ended up on the floor in the aisle with Liger fighting with Desperado and Taichi. Taichi kicked Liger and Desperado just held Liger on the ground while Taichi ran in to beat the count and win via count out quickly. Taichi had his girl with him who was hitting on Liger before then making out with Taichi.  After the match Liger hurled a chair at them and hit Desperado right in the from far away and he went down selling the knee and limped to the back.

KENOH VS. KUSHIDA IN THE QUARTERFINALS

This was an excellent technical match. If you’re into top level matwork this was it. But a big issue today is that the crowd is small and because of that it doesn’t have the big event feel. They exchanged moved and submissions on the mat with Kushida constantly going for the hoverboard lock until getting the armbar in the middle for the submission. This sets up Kushida vs. Taichi next.

RYUSUKE TAGUCHI VS. YOSHINOBU KANEMARU IN QUARTERFINALS

This was good, but lacked heat which is looking like the theme of the show. Kanemaru kicked out of the Dodon and Taguchi kicked out of a DDT off the top rope but Kanemaru followed that up with his touch out, which is a brainbuster for the clean pin. Kanemaru is the GHC jr. champion so he figured to not get eliminated here.

WILL OSPREAY VS. MATT SYDAL IN QUARTERFINALS

In an upset, Sydal pinning him clean with a shooting star press after a reverse Frankensteiner off the middle rope. Athletically, this blew away anything this week but this is just not a crowd where you can be in the match of the year because they were so quiet, although in the end you could see they really liked it. There was an awesome high spot early. Ospreay did the Space Flying Tiger drop and a lot of things that were blow away like Sydal giving Ospreay a lariat and Ospreay doing a spin bump and landing on his feet. It wouldn’t be my call to beat Ospreay here.

TITAN & CARISTICO & VOLADOR JR. VS. ULTIMO GUERRERO & GRAN GUERRERO & EUFORIA

Very good match and the crowd appreciated it but didn’t go wild for it. It was almost exactly what you’d think. The first several minutes of heel heat saw nobody care because there was no interest in personalities or storyline. Once they did the first sequence of dives the crowd was into it.  Caristico is nowhere near 100% due to a broken pelvis and he was the big star from his days as Mistico. Titan and Volador were great and the heels did their jobs. The biggest reaction was Volador doing a big plancha into a hurricanrana. Caristico kicked out of the Guerrero special. Volador pinned Gran Guerrero after a top rope Spanish fly. This was pretty much their Friday night Arena Mexico match but without the intense fan reaction.

KUSHIDA VS. TAICHI IN THE SEMIFINALS

Taichi attacked him before the match with the mic stand. At one point Kushida made a comeback and was on the top rope for a dive to the floor, Taichi’s girl got in front of Taichi so he wouldn’t dive. Taichi used the ring bell and played heel and got good heat. Kushida came back with the hoverboard lock but Desperado distracted the ref who missed Taichi furiously tapping. Taichi hit Kushida in the head with a chair and used the Gedo clutch for a strong near fall. Kushida also kicked out of a last ride power bomb and scored the pin with a spinning move into a cradle. After the match Taichi and Desperado attacked him again.

Editor’s note: The remainder of the show was covered by Bryan Rose

MATT SYDAL VS. YOSHINOBU KANEMARU

Good back and forth match. You can tell they were going forward with a champion vs. champion finals results since Kanemaru is the current GHC junior champion. Sydal tried for the shooting star press but Kanemaru got the knees up, smashed him with a lariat and picked up the win to go to the finals.

GHC TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS ATSUSHI KOTOGE & DAISUKE HARADA VS. ACH & TAIJI ISHIMORI

Pretty good match. ACH in particular looked strong here and should be a regular in NOAH going forward as he could definitely be a new bright spot in that division. Cool spot at one point was ACH and Ishimori hitting stereo 450 splashes, but both Kotoge and Harada got the knees up and cradled them for a double near fall. Kotoge and Harada isolated Ishimori and pinned him after a bridging German suplex by Harada.

After the match, the champions called out Gedo & Jado. Jado came down to the ring, and Gedo left commentary to accept their challenge. Guess them getting a win on the G1 finals card made sense in the end.

IWGP JUNIOR TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS THE YOUNG BUCKS VS. THE MOTOR CITY MACHINE GUNS

This was really good, one of the better matches of the night but the crowd, which was cold for a lot of the show, was just there. Bucks were wearing gear with Dave Meltzer’s face plastered all over. MCMG looked good, as did the Bucks. Lots of great back and forth sequences towards the end. The Bucks laid out Shelley on the outside with an Indytaker, then pinned Sabin after hitting the Meltzer Driver.

Bucks got on the mic after the match and said they have won the IWGP Jr. tag team championships, but they want to do something that has never done before –  they challenged the Briscoes, who hold the heavyweight tag team titles. If this is the next step toward unifying these two divisions, I’m all for it.

KUSHIDA VS. YOSHINOBU KANEMARU FOR THE SUPER J-CUP

Pretty good match, but again the crowd was just there and didn’t feel like a big tournament was concluding, or that two junior world champions were going at it. Taka Michinoku got involved, pulling the ref out of the ring at one point. KUSHIDA fought off the brainbuster attempts by Kanemaru. Taichi also got involved but Taguchi thwarted him. KUSHIDA got in the hoverboard lock and Kanemaru tapped.

KUSHIDA was awarded the golden jacket as Alex Shelley, his former tag team partner (I guess it’s former for right now) helped him put it on. They shared a nice moment as everyone came out and posed for a group picture to close out the show.

ROH Death Before Dishonor XIV live results: Jay Lethal vs. Adam Cole

Preview by Joseph Currier

Headlined by Ring of Honor Champion Jay Lethal defending his title against the Bullet Club’s Adam Cole, ROH returns to pay-per-view on Friday night from Las Vegas, NV with Death Before Dishonor XIV.

The show will also feature stars from New Japan Pro Wrestling, with IWGP Heavyweight Champion Kazuchika Okada, Hiroshi Tanahashi, Tetsuya Naito, IWGP Intercontinental Champion Michael Elgin, NEVER Openweight Champion Katsuyori Shibata, and more NJPW talent scheduled to appear.

We’re looking for your thoughts on tonight’s show, so you can leave a thumbs up, thumbs down or thumbs in the middle along with a best and worst match to [email protected]

Lethal and Cole have been engaged in a heated storyline that included Cole shaving Lethal bald. ROH matchmaker Nigel McGuinness ruled that Cole would not be eligible to receive any more title shots, but Lethal insisted that this match had to happen.

The card also includes a huge match for the ROH Tag Team Championship as The Addiction defend against Tanahashi & Elgin and Naito & EVIL in a triple threat tag match.

Also scheduled for the show, Okada will take on Dalton Castle in a non-title match, ROH World Television Champion Bobby Fish will defend against Mark Briscoe, Shibata will face Silas Young, and more.

Our coverage starts on Friday night at 9 p.m. ET. The card for the show is:

  • ROH World Champion Jay Lethal vs. Adam Cole in a championship match
  • ROH World Television Champion Bobby Fish vs. Mark Briscoe in a championship match
  • ROH Tag Team Champions The Addiction vs. Tetsuya Naito & EVIL vs. Michael Elgin & Hiroshi Tanahashi in a triple threat tag team championship match
  • Kazuchika Okada vs. Dalton Castle
  • Katsuyori Shibata vs. Silas Young
  • Rocky Romero, Trent Barreta, & Toru Yano vs. Yujiro Takahashi, Tama Tonga, & Tanga Roa
  • Jay Briscoe vs. Hangman Page
  • Lio Rush vs. Jay White vs. Donovan Dijak vs. Kamaitachi in a TV title number one contenders match

JAY WHITE VS. LIO RUSH VS. DONOVAN DIJAK VS. KAMAITACHI FOR THE TOP CONTENDER FOR THE TV TITLE

Dijak got the pin on Rush using feast your eyes, which is a fireman’s carry into a knee, like a GTS but not exactly.  All action match.  Rush was the flashiest of the four with several dives including a reverse huracanrans on the floor.  Dijak, who was twice hte size of the other three, did a springboard screw plancha.  Looks like we’re having trouble witht he mic’ing but there were chants and stuff.

Silas Young did an interview anti-New Japan saying New Japan guys get all the good spots when they come in and made fun of all the fans being nerds.

KATSUYORI SHIBATA VS. SILAS YOUNG

The crowd reacted real big for Shibata,  Shibata won as expected with the choke and penalty kick.  Young got a lot of offense including a split legged moonsault.  The two traded slaps after the match and then shook hands and stared each other down after the match.  Match was fine, they built to a big spot where Shibata was about to head-butt Young but Young slapped him.

TAMA TONGA & TANGA ROA & YUJIRO TAKAHASHI VS.  ROCKY ROMERO & BARETTA & TORU YANO

This was mostly built around Yano’s comedy.  Yano pinned Takahashi with a low blow.  After the match, The Bulet Club beat down Chaos and in paricular Yano.  Hangman Page put the noose on Yano’s neck until Jay Briscoe made the savae.  This set up Briscoe vs. Page

JAY BRISCOE VS. HANGMAN PAGE IN AN ANYTHING GOES MATCH

This was a long brutal match.  This was to put Page over on Jay and make him a star.  The finish saw Page block a Jay driller on the apron and instead used the rights of passage, which is an Omori driver on Jay  through the table.  Both were hurt as the table took a chunk out of Page’s left knee and Jay was bleeding badly from the back.  Page then used the bullrope to choke Briscoe out and then gave him another rights of passage in the ring for the pin.  They put it over like this was the biggest win in Page’s career.  There were lots of spots with the noose and with chairs throguhout the match.  The crowd seemed like they really liked it.  We’ll try and see how Page is because he was screaming in pain regarding his knee, finished the match and seemed like he was hurting bbad as soon as it was over.

The Boys had the Okada dollar bills and Castle said he understands The Boys love New Japan.  He said he loves New Japan but he loves dropping people on their heads and ate an Okada bill.

KAZUCHIKA OKADA VS. DALTON CASTLE

The crowd loved Okada.  They’re chanting his name and throwing streamers.  Good match although it struggled early.  Castle got a lot of offense but the fans never truly believed he could win.  He even did the bang a rang but Okada rolled out of the ring to avoid the pin.  Castle did a lot of different suplexes.  They teased that The Boys were big Okada fans and at one point they were helping him.  Okada won getting out of the bang a rang, hit the tombstone piledriver and rainmaker for the pin.  Both shook hands after and both men and The Boys all posed together at the end.

BOBBY FISH VS. MARK BRISCOE FOR THE TV TITLE

Fish retained with an exploder into the turnbuckles and a falcon arrow.  Earlier Briscoe kicked out of the falcon arrow and Fish kicked out of the froggy bow.  This was solid and the crowd did some chants but something was missing.  It was hard hitting early and went long with the near falls.  Not sure if the crowd micing is hurting this or it’s the crowd into moves but not the match.  Hard to say from TV.  It’s also seemed like the crowd was more into seeing New Japan stars live than seeing ROH major matches.

CHRISTOPHER DANIELS & FRANKIE KAZARIAN VS. HIROSHI TANAHASHI & MICHAEL ELGIN VS. TETSUYA NAITO & EVIL FOR TAG TITLES

Daniels & Kazarian retained in a great match with a clever finish.  Tanahashi was on the top rope and Daniels touched his boot as a tag.  Tanahashi hit the high fly flow on Evil and went for the pin but technically Daniels was the legal guy and he jumped in and cradled Evil while Tanahashi was on top so they retained the titles.  Matt Taven did the heel commentary trying to be obnoxious and did a real good job of that.  Elgin was the star of the match doing all kinds of power moves like a German suplex on Daniels & Kazarian at the same time, the fallaway on Naito & Evil at the same time and he even did a running flip dive on everyone.  Naito and Tanahashi were really over with the crowd.  Tanahashi & Elgin seemed on the verge of winning when Kamaitachi came out and distracted which allowed Daniels to hit both Tanahashi & Elgin with belt shots and Kazarian to hit Evil with one.

JAY LETHAL VS. ADAM COLE FOR THE ROH TITLE

Cole ended the one year plus title reign after an Ushigoroshi, a shining wizard and another Ushigoroshi.  The match saw them kick out of each others’ big moves including Lethal kicking out of the Canadian Destroyer off the ropes and Cole kicked out of the Lethal injection.  Long match and crowd loved it at the end with the fans on their feet and going crazy for the near falls.  Afte the match Kyle O’Reilly showed up durign the celebration and cltheslined Cole.  O’reilly laid himn out with a brainbustrer so it looks like Cole vs. O’Reilly coming up at All-Star Extravaganza at the end of next month.  Among the highlights were Lethal doing an elbow off the top rope to a table on the floor about two-thirds of the way to the other side and Cole moved and Lethal crashed through and busted his head open.  It took forever to set up the spot because Lethal couldn’t find where the table was under the ring and when he did find it, it was covered in streamers and he had to get rid of the streamres.  Lethal also did five straight topes, but on the sixth Cole sidestepped him and Lethal crashed into the barricade.
