NBC cancels The Rock’s ‘Young Rock’ TV series

NBC has canceled Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s “Young Rock” TV series as it will not return for a fourth campaign.

The news was announced by several entertainment media outlets Friday afternoon as the network cut several other series as well.

The show, which debuted in February 2021, was based on the life of Johnson, starting with his childhood growing up in a pro wrestling family. Throughout the series’ 37 episodes over three seasons, characters like Randy Savage, Steve Austin, the Iron Sheik, Hulk Hogan and others were introduced in addition to several football players and Johnson’s well-known family members. The time periods covered were 1982, 1987 and the 1990s.

The show’s third season was moved to Fridays opposite WWE SmackDown in a move that puzzled many.

The premise was Johnson reflecting on his life in both wrestling and football as he prepared to run for president in the year 2032.

Johnson was an executive producer on the show along with series creator Nahnatchka Khan who is the sister of WWE CEO Nick Khan.

As of this writing, Johnson has not acknowledged the show’s cancellation on social media.

WWE star Becky Lynch returning to NBC’s ‘Young Rock’

WWE star Becky Lynch isn’t done with her role on “Young Rock.”

Lynch posted a tweet on Monday revealing that she’s back filming on the “Young Rock” set. She’ll again be playing musician Cyndi Lauper on a future episode of the show.

“She’s baaaaaaaack! Delighted to be back on set with the incredible #YoungRock cast and crew playing the iconic Cyndi Lauper! Stay tuned,” Lynch wrote

Lynch first played Lauper on the season three premiere of “Young Rock,” which aired on NBC this past November. That episode included a young Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson meeting Lauper at a party she threw around WrestleMania I in 1985.

In a tweet after the season three premiere, Johnson thanked Lynch and gave her props for the job she did playing Lauper.

“Young Rock” airs on NBC at 8:30 p.m. Eastern time on Friday nights. The show returned last Friday after being on a break for the holidays.

“Young Rock” is based on Johnson’s life and tells the story of how he was shaped into the person he is today.

Lynch is currently involved in a feud with Bayley in WWE.

VIDEO: WWE’s Becky Lynch appears as Cyndi Lauper on ‘Young Rock’

Becky Lynch made her “Young Rock” debut on Friday’s episode, playing Cyndi Lauper.

Billed as Rebecca Quin, Lynch’s series debut as Lauper came during a scene set at a WrestleMania I party, with other attendees including Hulk Hogan, Mr. T, and Liberace.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson tweeted a video of Lynch’s performance as Lauper, later saying that the scene was based on a real interaction between Johnson and Lauper at a similar party.

The video, including Lynch delivering Lauper’s trademark Brooklyn accent:

Rock’s comments on meeting Lauper, and Lynch’s performance:

Johnson also tweeted that he was “proud” of Lynch’s performance on the show:

Lynch’s dialogue coach for the series also tweeted praise of the star’s turn as Lauper:

Lynch tweeted:

Season 3 of Young Rock is airing Fridays at 8:30 p.m. Eastern time as part of a comedy block on NBC, head-to-head with WWE SmackDown on Fox.

Lynch is currently out of WWE action after suffering a separated shoulder at SummerSlam on July 30.

Dwayne Johnson shares first look at Becky Lynch on ‘Young Rock’

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has confirmed Becky Lynch’s role on the season three premiere of “Young Rock.”

In an Instagram post on Thursday morning, Johnson shared three photos of Lynch playing music star Cyndi Lauper on the “Young Rock” episode. The new season premieres on NBC this Friday at 8:30 p.m. Eastern time.

Johnson wrote:

Cool news alert

Officially welcoming @beckylynchwwe to our YOUNG ROCK cast

Becky takes on the daunting and FUN task of playing the one and only – the icon Cyndi Lauper.

I was right there for Becky’s audition and we were all very impressed at her high level commitment as an actor to become Cyndi Lauper.

No easy task, but she worked her butt off and went all in – and crushed it.

PWInsider reported that the plot for the season premiere “deals with a party Lauper throws around WrestleMania 1. Hulk Hogan, Mr. T, Vince McMahon, Lou Albano and Liberace will also be portrayed in the episode, which is set in 1985. When the series was being cast, Lauper was listed as a possible recurring character, so this may not be Lynch’s only appearance in the series.”

“The People Need You” is the title of the “Young Rock” season premiere. The show, which previously aired on Tuesdays, is moving to Fridays for season three and will go head-to-head with WWE SmackDown.

“Young Rock” is based on Johnson’s life and tells the story of how he was shaped into the person he is today.

Lynch hasn’t wrestled since suffering a separated shoulder at SummerSlam this July. There was an angle on the post-SummerSlam Raw where Damage CTRL attacked Lynch and exacerbated her injury.

WWE star Becky Lynch to play Cyndi Lauper in ‘Young Rock’

WWE’s Becky Lynch will be playing a role in the season three premiere of NBC’s “Young Rock.”

Lynch will play music star Cyndi Lauper in the season premiere episode, which airs on NBC at 8:30 p.m. Eastern time this Friday (November 4). Lynch will be billed under her real name of Rebecca Quin.

TV Insider’s Scott Fishman posted a tweet on Monday night teasing that Lynch would be playing Lauper: “Think fans are going to see @BeckyLynchWWE back on TV sooner than later because you know …girls just want to have fun.”

PWInsider notes that the episode deals with a party thrown by Lauper around the first WrestleMania in 1985:

The plot of the first episode deals with a party Lauper throws around WrestleMania 1. Hulk Hogan, Mr. T, Vince McMahon, Lou Albano and Liberace will also be portrayed in the episode, which is set in 1985. When the series was being cast, Lauper was listed as a possible recurring character, so this may not be Lynch’s only appearance in the series.

Lauper was a celebrity guest who helped contribute to the success of WrestleMania I. She accompanied Wendi Richter to the ring for her WWF Women’s Championship match against Leilani Kai.

After previously airing on Tuesdays, “Young Rock” is moving to Fridays for season three and will go up against WWE SmackDown. “Young Rock” is based on Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s life and tells the story of how Johnson was shaped into the person he is today.

“The People Need You” is the title of the season three premiere.

Lynch has been out of action since suffering a separated shoulder at SummerSlam this July. On the post-SummerSlam episode of Raw, there was an injury angle where Damage CTRL attacked Lynch and exacerbated her shoulder injury.

  • WWE finished its tour of Europe with the show in Leipzig, Germany yesterday. The only Raw guys on the tour were Bobby Lashley, Randy Orton and Riddle. • No matches were announced for Raw in Greensboro tonight. The ratings-killing NBA playoffs have the Philadelphia 76ers vs. Miami Heat at 7:30 p.m. and Dallas Mavericks vs. Phoenix Suns at 10 p.m. For tomorrow, NXT goes against Bucks-Celtics and the the last half hour and West Coast feed goes against Warriors-Grizzles. Smackdown being taped may have hurt with younger viewers who were way down but the older viewers were not down at all from the prior week.
  • Stu Grayson was removed from the AEW roster page today. Nothing has been officially said by AEW but thus far when people are removed, they are basically gone. AEW hasn’t confirmed he’s gone but the word going around is that his contract expired and the two sides didn’t come to terms on a new deal. Grayson was one of those guys that nobody really talks about and wasn’t a big star, but inside the ring he was great.

‘Young Rock’ teases The Rock vs. Roman Reigns WWE WrestleMania match

A future WrestleMania match between The Rock and Roman Reigns was teased during a scene on this week’s episode of “Young Rock.”

The sixth episode of the show’s second season aired on Tuesday night. During the program, Rock was just beginning his wrestling training with his father, Rocky Johnson, at the time. He’s later shown with his family watching Yokozuna (Rodney Anoaʻi) wrestle at the Royal Rumble on television. A young Joe Anoaʻi (Roman Reigns) is watching the event as well. Joe jumps on Rock’s shoulders and asks for someone to give him a Samoan Drop. When no one responds, he asks them all to “acknowledge” him.

Joe pleads with his cousin to wrestle him in the living room but Rock tells him, “The world’s not ready. A match that big can only happen at WrestleMania.”

Johnson appears in every episode of “Young Rock.” In season one, Johnson is running for president in the 2032 election. The show flashes back to different points in Johnson’s life, and actors Adrian Groulx, Bradley Constant, and Uli Latukefu play younger versions of Johnson.

Young Rock was created by Johnson and Nahnatchka Khan. Johnson, Khan, Jeff Chiang, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia, Brian Gewirtz, and Jennifer Carreras are executive producers on the series.

“Kenan,” which premiered alongside “Young Rock” in February, was also renewed by NBC today.

“It has been a true joy to watch Dwayne Johnson and Kenan Thompson on NBC every week and see families connect with their relatable, entertaining and heartwarming stories,” said Lisa Katz, President of Scripted Programming at NBCUniversal Television and Streaming. “We’re thrilled to renew both of these shows for another season and can’t wait to see more from Dwayne, Kenan and the incredibly talented casts and producing teams behind each of them.”

The death of Tom Cole this week takes us back to one of the most sordid pro wrestling stories of the last 50 years, which involved media heavyweights at the time like Phil Donahue, Larry King, Geraldo Rivera and Phil Mushnick. It’s the lead story of a new double issue of the Observer.
